Israel freezes plan to send vaccines to foreign allies
"The story coming out of israel this week. was That israeli journalists. Kelly cohen reported that israel's going to send one hundred thousand vaccines to nineteen nations around the world. Some of these nations announced that they were moving are had already moved embassies or missions to jerusalem honduras guatemala czech republic. There was no debate at all In the security cabinet no authorization by the justice. Minister of foreign minister and benny was the defense minister. And by the way interim justice minister said that thinks he's a running running kingdom and not a state by this decision obviously. Israel's already criticized for not making it a priority to vaccinate. The palestinians may talk a little bit more about that. But it isn't making us look better right this these one hundred thousand. Vaccinations being sent abroad. No i didn't think it is. Because i mean vaccine diplomacy which is a new thing now in our will. But he's a real thing you know with china india jostling with each other to distribute vaccines to win influence and goodwill in asia etc. You know united arab emirates is is giving vaccine to egypt. Obviously this is a thing to be doing. Russia trying to boost its profile. But the problem here is. It's very transparent. The israelis basically rewarding friends. You know that hungry set up. A trade mission in jerusalem or the republicans promised to do something similar and therefore because of that recognition Be wants to reward those countries Vaccine i mean it goes down well for the reason you know. Which is the story. A big story around the world is that israel is not accenting Its nearest neighbors and therefore misses something. I think about vaccine diplomacy well. Why don't we just talk about that. Because of course that has reached a new audience that notion of what israel's doing not doing vaccine right and it reached a new audience in you're referring to the snl clip that How shall you say this. Caused a bit of a ruckus this week. So let's listen in and talk a little bit more about reporting that the vaccinated half of their population. And i'm gonna guess it's the jewish half. I mean obviously you mentioned this. Jonathan about how if I think you said this one of the previous episodes if this was new zealand. We wouldn't be hearing at the end of the vaccination thing but because it's israel and it's politically charged. There's there's added complexity to the story. Yeah i mean you know you states say. The snl clip went viral jojo. Avars use that word to me. That was a big moment. Really because it's mainstream american comedy. If that is now it seems to me. There's a judgment there. Such a night live making the among its audience. There will be a perception as a more left wing. Frankly view of israel than i think would have been true a generation ago And you can make a joke like that sort of edgy but the the among kinda millennial snl audience who. Let's say you know. Revere alexandria ocasio cortez. The idea that israel is basically a little bit racist is a joke that lands without audience. That's what i think. Snl thinking there and just on the point about vaccine diplomacy. It seems to me that is the piece that's missing. Which is okay. You think you get a little bit of goodwill in hungary czech republic or whatever but actually what is noticed around the world and we can get into the arguments for and against is. The palestinians are not being vaccinated by israeli vaccine. And that's the big picture to the point where it took butter than snl joke.
Parliamentarian: COVID-19 bill must lose minimum wage hike
"Insiders tell the Associated Press the Senate parliamentarian has ruled the minimum wage hike proposal cannot stay in the covert nineteen relief bill it's been a sticking point for Republicans who mostly oppose raising the nation's minimum wage to fifteen dollars and some key Democrats and now the Senate parliamentarian the arbiter of rules finds the proposal doesn't meet the test for a sped up push through the Senate Democrats could break traditional norms and ignore the parliamentarian's decision but the White House is indicating a reluctance to push a procedural power play the house was hoping to get the one point nine trillion dollar Coalpit relief measure with the minimum wage hike approved before the weekend Jackie Quinn Washington
UFC Fight Night: Derrick Lewis demolishes Curtis Blaydes
"Let's go right into this thing. Let us discuss the heavyweight division in the ufc because it was on full display last week. It'll be on display this weekend as well and next month with the title on the line but let's focus on ufc vegas nineteen and derek lewis's incredible ferocious and absolutely vicious knockout of curtis blades. In the main event after a really strong opening round from curtis blades lewis delivers one of the nastiest knockout. You will ever see in the second round coming through with the biggest main event upset in the. Us's michael bisbee became. The ufc middleweight champion. A you have c. One ninety nine knocking out. Luke rocco network going to begin with you kind sir. Nice and easy your reaction to a massive win for derek lewis less than a week ago surprise. Surprise i guess is where i would start out. I picked curtis blades. I thought he would be able to at least take down. Derek lewis enough to win the fight and lo and behold. He didn't take him down at all. So that was probably actually the biggest surprise about the fight What wasn't surprising. That derek lewis after being down in the first round after losing that second round blades was doing really well on the feet. And then derek lewis just did what they're glues does. Big are uppercut. Is the fight so relatively shocking shocking result in the sense that derek one. I was fairly confident that blades. Who get it done. But not so not so surprising that derek lewis got another highlight reel nocco assay. We kind of got your instant reaction after the fight on saturday on the post by now you've talked about on the side but now they've had some time to let it all sink in and spoken about it on on different platforms. How big was this win. For derek lewis in the in the grand scheme of things that heavyweight. I mean anytime you win in the top five especially when the heavyweight title is only is within less than a month of your big victory. It's a big thing. I just think. Derek lewis is one of those fighters that he said it himself like the title is great but he's fighting for that paycheck. You got the bonus. You got bulbs paychecks. He's back taxes. Which is obviously still reeling from the massive blizzard. So i'm sure he's going to do great things with that. We saw what he did when the hurricane happened. Driving around saving people so For a normal fighter getting this big win on a big platform so close to not just the title fight probably another a contender fight with jazzy. No rose straight and cyril gone. They're going to be like. Oh this is great for my career. I'm looking at it from the perspective of derek. Lewis wear awesome. I got both of my paychecks and fifty thousand dollars more so yeah massive night for the black beast again. Prize fighters derek lewis through to be one of the most reliable prize fighters on the ufc roster. So yeah ten attempt forms across the board from the heavyweight contender to sort of build upon that jose. Is it time to look at derek. Lewis is not just a fun prizefighter but a serious threat to the title. It's not like he wasn't before but people always view. Derek is this you know fun. Follow on social media this hilarious guy this quote machine who can land knock on at any point of a fight as watch the sport at all outside of his fight weeks doesn't really care about titles but it seems like he's putting together now i know he's added some pieces to his team. You saw lauren. Murphy's husband joe in his corner who's excellent jujitsu coach in practitioner. His own right time to stop looking. Derek lewis as the funny guy with the with the best social media. Game outside of darren taylor. Moore is a legit threat to st bay francis and gado john jones. Whoever is in this division. I would say derek lewis has already the best twitter follow third. Darren tools jason lewis at this point. Because derek lewis is winning fighting and being funny darren till is only doing one of those things. So i i would say derek lows. Of course you have been taken seriously if he touches your jaw you have to take him seriously because you're probably not going to remember when after the referee pulls him off of you so i don't know the answer to this because we haven't seen we don't know we don't know that's like saying oh francis in who is putting together all of these this team to make him a complete fire. All of his fights are like less than two minutes long. So we just don't know for all we know. Derek lewis is the best gogo planet practitioner. It all of the ufc. We're just never going to see it because at the second touches you you die. So if you fight someone like steep bay That is obviously a master game. Planner i think that's better. That's that'll be a better gauge of derek. lewis skills. because we've seen him fight dan mccormick. Who is the definition of a complete mixed martial arts and that wasn't a great night for derek lewis. Yes he took that on like Real short notice to only a month after he got that beatdown he did win. Let's not forget volkov. Put it on their clothes until again. Derek lewis touched his jaw and killed a man on live television. So yeah i don't know. Tb all say. I know that's a cop out. But i don't think anyone knows i think everyone will agree with.

Brittany Higgins Files Police Report on Parliament House Rape Claim
"Almost a not. Australia has been transfixed by the story of brittany hagans. The former political stuff who alleges she was raped in a minister's office inside parliament house more allegations against the same men have followed along with ongoing rounds of recriminations about how badly brittany higgins case was handled all giving rise to the clear impression that something is very wrong in parliament house on stephen smiling. And i'm angie lovelock and today on the signal the case that might just trigger some desperately needed reform women in australian politics. Okay so it's it's been a couple of weeks. Maybe you could take back to the moment when this story broke. Yes so it was the first monday of this sitting fortnight around eight o'clock the morning. This is clear armstrong. She's the national political reporter at the daily telegraph newspaper based in parliament. House in canberra. An article appeared on newstalk today written by a journalist code cement the maiden and she Published the allegations of brittany higgins question of where the parliament housing camera is a safe workplace for women is again in the headlines following allegations that a young government staff member was raped in minister's office in an interview with news dot com dot. Au higgins claimed. She felt forced to choose between reporting the assault to police or keeping her dream job. Britney alleges that she was raped by a maiocco lake in the office of now defense minister linda reynolds and The instant reaction i would say was one of complete and utter shock. This abject failure to provide a safe place of work here in parliament and in politics more. Broadly has got to come to an. I think there is. I called for problem inside this building. I've spoken about it many times. I think for far too long young. Women have copped the brunt of the culture in this place and it's time we cleaned it up often beak political scandal type stories us saved until the monday of a sitting week. Because of course you have all of the politicians in cambra unable to escape the issue which was pretty much exactly why that story was published when it was but then quite quickly became apparent that this was going to be a really huge issue. More than i think what people may be realized at that moment because of course she was also booked. This brittany was also booked to appear on the project that night and give a full kind of unfettered account of what she was alleging. And that's really how it kicked off really starting the week with the most possible drama. I think i've had since. I've been camera eighteen months. Welcome back to this special edition of the project tonight. Claims of ripe roadblocks to a police investigation and a young woman forced to choose between her career and the pursuit of justice. And it all happened right in the heart of our democracy as you said clear. It broke on the monday of the start of this session. But the details of britain higgins allegations relate to twenty nineteen. What does she say happened in. What happened back then when she first talked about it. Yeah absolutely so her. Her allegation dates back to sort of the friday. Saturday of of twenty dead of much in two thousand nineteen And brittany alleges that when she was out at a with colleagues drinking at one point The the man she alleges raped her. She says through the night he'd hurler drink. She realized she was quite drunk. Wanted to home. I notice that he was buying meal out of drinks. And i was just sort of job. Well done kind of broadly being rewarded in a weird way. So would you say you were drunk when you decided to go home obsolete. She says it was suggested that because they lived in the same direction. They should share cab when she was in that cab he said i've got to pick something up from parliament on the way i and she goes along with it ends up being signed dean to parliament. Neither of them have their passes. It's quite light after hours. They have to sign themselves. Will he. signs. Both of the men go into the office. She says she would feel well. She laid down and she alleges that she wake up with with demand on top of that i woke up mid ripe essentially. I don't know why i knew. He was almost finished. But i felt like it had been going on for a while or that. He was done. He was sweaty. I couldn't get him off of me at this point. I started crying fast. Forward to the the the start of the workweek she. She comes to work and immediately. The issue is initially traded as security breach because obviously Linda reynolds was defense industry minister at the time a lot of classified important information potentially in that office so she learns pretty quickly that the male stafa involved in these instant has already been had their employment terminated over these potential security breach and she's brought into a series of formal employment meetings to discuss. What is that time. Believed to be a security breach felt like a disciplinary meeting. It was we've been made aware of the events in that. You guys were here after hours. And you know that's not acceptable She of course then disclosed to her boss when reynolds what she alleged happened to her and that also then led her going to the afp.
Will vaccines make a difference responding to the next outbreak?
"I'm health reported teigen tyler and physician in journalists alter norman swan. It's the last corona cast of summer fridays. twenty-six yes. We are on the last current cost of summer. And i feel like i am. Maybe potentially jinxing us by talking about an outbreak. But let's talk about the scenario norman. Where if there was another outbreak in australia. Now that we've got vaccine in the country vaccine which we know is quite effective at preventing disease and infection. Would that change the way. We've been responding to outbreaks in the past year. Yes would and in fact. I think we were probably the first out. Let's talk about. It was called ring vaccination. And it's now part as far as i understand it over the national immunization or vaccinations strategy. So what you do is as you do your contact tracing you would ring-fence vaccination around the person who's got the disease and the people that have come in contact with and maybe even the people that they've come in contact with so primary contacts and secondary contacts and you would do that with the pfizer vaccine because you've got a strong response early and is only three weeks between doses so within three weeks you're fully immunized rather than the astro which might take twelve weeks to get up to that sort of level of antibody response and so a and it's a race against time so that you because the incubation periods five to eight days but what some of the research is showing is that you get an early response to particularly the pfizer vaccine. Maybe even the astro too so you get a pretty good resistance there early on so that would be a good way to respond to outbreaks prior to very large percentage of the population being covered. So when you vaccinate sometimes depending on the disease some vaccines take a couple of weeks before you get an immune response. But then there's other vaccines like rabies. Where if you get bitten and you think that there's a chance got exposed to rabies. They give you a vaccine then. Do we know what the fires a shot does. Whether it's the sort of vaccine that you can give after exposure and give you some protection while it is all about the maths which is the incubation period versus the time for the vaccine to work so smallpox that's how they controlled. Smallpox control smallpox by massimo. Certainly helped but in places such as africa they controlled it by ringfencing and controlling the spread from that and so they find they find a case a main they ring vaccinated around the person with smallpox. So that in for anybody who might have contact come in contact with that person was protected and in that case the vaccine for for the smallpox vaccine worked faster than the incubation period of smallpox. In this case it's lying ball but it's worth doing because it's likely that you would get a responsibility and you're doing two things by this ring. Fencing are ring vaccination. I should call it. You are protecting somebody against severe covid. Nineteen disease the second thing you'd be doing is trying to prevent transmission and you'd hope those two things go hand in hand is a bit of evidence from israel that they do but it's not strong

Did Bill Gates Seriously Short TSLA Stock
"Robbed our here and today we're going to be talking about bill gates response to on musk's claims the oregon podcast a couple of weeks. Back that get heard. That bill gates had been shorting stock. We've also got some news on the broader electric vehicle automotive market an interesting response from yvonne on an article from the washington post. And of course. We've gotta talk about tesla stock. It's about wild couple of days. We had the interview yesterday with alex rotter so we didn't get a chance to talk about it. But of course yesterday. Tuesday february twenty. Third tesla dropped to a low of six hundred nineteen dollars per share. That was down more than thirteen percent from the prior. Close then of course. We saw us swift recovery in the market. And from tesla tesla finishing down just two percent yesterday on the biggest volume day that we've seen in over a month and a half with sixty six million shares trading hands yesterday. So i talked about on monday and we briefly talked about yesterday in the interview as well. A lot of this is tied to expectation on interest rates. So yesterday fed chairman. Jerome powell made comments to congress. Indicating the current monetary policy is expected to continue for some time as economic uncertainty remains so not to get too deep into that. We've talked about that. Of course in the past but as far as tussles yesterday certainly was not isolated to tesla. Those sort of concerns were broadly extended to high growth. Stocks tussle obviously falls in that category. And i think the volatility there serves as a nice quarterly reminder that you have to be very very careful with stop losses on a volatile stock like tussle as for today tesla continue to rebound finishing up six point two percent to seven hundred and forty dollars two cents. That compared to the nasdaq up one percent. All right so i up today. I want to continue a conversation that we began a couple of weeks back after yvonne. Musk went on joe. Rogan's podcast for the third time and said that he had heard from people he believes would know that bill gates had shorted tesla. Yvonne brought that up in response to a question from joe rogan on the tesla semi citing that bill gates in a blog. Post a few months back had said that eighteen wheel electric semi is probably would never work so allen's claim here understand. We drawing a lot of attention not the first time something like this has happened between musk and gates last year. He did by his first electric vehicle. The porsche ticon. Which at the time. Maybe it wasn't so clear why he didn't by ordering vehicle up until that point. Well now we might have a better answer for that. But he talked about the decision in an interview with marquez brownlee and it seemed to be a relatively tepid endorsement of electric vehicles gatesville right up ranging anxiety as a problem and elon. Musk responded to that interview. Not necessarily gives purchase of tycoon but those comments in general by saying that quote my conversations with gates have been underwhelming to be honest and so that catches us up to today and then we have launched claiming that he heard gates which tesla now in the last week. We've had both cnbc and bloomberg asked gates directly about that claim. I think gates tone is important these responses so i will play the actual clip. The i wanna hear from andrew. Ross sorkin cnbc asking gates so so you're not sure tesla's stock were clear. Yeah i'm not. I don't talk about my investment. But i think he should be very proud of what he's done. Okay so technically there. He did say yeah. I'm not but it sounded like he was more starting a sentence of saying yeah. I'm not going to talk about my investments not yet. I'm not sure tesla because he interrupts himself and says i don't want to talk about my investments so to me. That's a no comment. Rather than a denial. What's interesting here is his reason saying he doesn't wanna talk about his investments but in the exact same interview. He talks about his investments multiple times. He says quote when i invested in impossible foods or beyond me or quantum scape. I was doing that just to help their own climate. Now it looks like those three will be very successful companies. And so i'll have more money to put into the tough areas a climate like cement and steel and quote. Okay so he says he doesn't want to talk about his investments but then he in response to another question talks about his investments in impossible foods beyond me quantum scape and then how does investments are doing and that i'll have more money to then go on an invest in other stuff. I mean how much more could you talk about your investments. And he uses the first person tense. You're saying i invested. He's asked about bitcoin and he says quote. I don't own bitcoin. I'm not short bitcoin. So i've taken a neutral view and quote so for bitcoin. Perfectly fine to say i'm not short bitcoin. Same question for tesla. oh. I don't want to talk about my investments that we just spent a bunch of time talking about. If you're not going to answer the question at least come up with a better non answer. That doesn't immediately contradict yourself. He has to have known that he'll be asked about that and yet seems completely content guard answer so that was last week if there was any doubt left after that because he did start off. By saying yeah. I'm not before interrupting himself as we said. Here's gates on bloomberg yesterday so we had five days to think about this answering the same question from emily. Chang yuan has in the past claimed you shorted tesla and i wonder if there's any truth to that Well you know i think. Test us on amazed seen company I wish you know own. Been more on the long side. But i it's it's great And you know i have. Lots of relatives won't tassels Helped by for them. So you know nothing. But positive thoughts about tesla role. Okay so if the answer to the cnbc question was a bit of a flood. There was a clear opportunity to just say. Hey i'm not sure. Tesla was jor tesla and again gates passes and he sure doesn't look comfortable to me answering the question. Belief is that it looks pretty clear. That bill gates was short. Tesla who knows if he's still is it'd be surprised but come on. How are you going to be all about climate change and then short the one company that's doing more than any other company on earth to combat it. If you don't think it's a good investment you think it's overvalued you can just not invest in it. No one has any problem with that but too short it push the stock price down. Make it more difficult for tesla to raise capital. That's something else entirely.
Why Square Stock Dropped Today
"Came in solidly higher-than-expected shares of square though are down seven percent this morning. Because growth is slowing. There's always a lot to get to with square so when you look at all the numbers. Tell me what stood out to you. Yes for me. I really focused. When i swear on really their burgeoning business which you know is the cash shop. It's funny you mentioned the war on cash and they have this kind of conveniently named cash app so it was really some of the numbers that the shop drew in the quarter and for that matter the fiscal year one of them is one hundred sixty two percent. Increase your ear. Gross profit of the cash up In a lot of that is being fueled by new users and specifically cryptocurrencies like bitcoin. So i think one number is not in throughout the entire twenty twenty fiscal year over three million people transacted bitcoin in some regard which was a two hundred fifty percent increase in volume compared to fiscal year. Nineteen and then they also even gave some gave some information on january twenty twenty one st year with over one million new buyers of bitcoin so really just interesting kind of figures throughout the entire report. Kind of the bitcoin. Being such an important part of that cash app is what really stood out to me. Yeah and that was certainly part of the headline squares square announcing it had purchased one hundred seventy million dollars worth of bitcoin during the quarter so cash app is squares version of ven. Mo- it's interesting to see the reaction from the start because on the one hand. This is a stock. Even factoring in the drop today. The stock is up almost two hundred percent in the past year so i understand particularly traders on wall street with a shorter term mentality saying alright. It's been a good year. Let's let's take a little money off the table. That sort of thing on the other hand. I don't know the overall market cap of square is just over one hundred billion dollars. It seems like a business with a lot of room to run. And i was listening to some of the comments the. Cfo made around what they are. Seeing it square in terms of how sticky the cash app is in terms of the other parts of squares business. How it's this thing that sort of bringing people in and once they're in the square ecosystem. They they start trying other parts of the business. So i don't know like would you look i get the. Pe ratio is somewhere north of five hundred. But when you when you look at everything that square has going on do you look at today as a buying opportunity for people who maybe had square on their watchlist and thought well okay. It's it's seven percent cheaper than it was yesterday. Yeah actually i was looking at. You know over the last couple of weeks how it's performed and through last week year to date. I think it was up. Something like twenty seven percent and then you have over the last couple of days. You know ten percent or so pullback and these are always the days as as a long term investor that i look for you know have a business. That's in my opinion burgeoning. Having fiscal year revenue grow over one hundred percent granted excluding bitcoin. That's only about fifteen or twenty percent but as long term investor. I do think this is an opportunity. I'm not personally a shareholder of square. But it's a fascinating business to me and we've seen so much traction and really their largest growing business in terms of bitcoin transaction cryptocurrency and things like that which really doesn't seem to be dying the craze three or four years ago now. And you know it's all of a sudden habit a two year hiatus and it's got right back in the thick of things you know which squares really benefiting from. So you know. I think if you're a long term investor willing to hold for a couple of years and not too worried about a lot of volatility which has realizing probably will continue to experience over the coming months over coming quarters over the coming years I think this is an opportunity to dip your feet in or maybe increase your position a little bit lows. Fourth quarter report
High-End Medical Provider Let Ineligible People Skip COVID-19 Vaccine Line
"Investigation reveals. That a major half care provider in the. Us has been leading. People jumped the line to get covid. Nineteen vaccines it's called. one medical. The company is part of a growing segment of america's healthcare system a boutique primary healthcare provider. That promises boutique service for an annual fee. One medical went public last year and is now valued in the billions of dollars. Internal communications leaked to npr. Show that the provider is giving vaccine shots to people who aren't yet eligible tim. Mack of npr's investigations team has the story and joins us now. Good morning. good morning. What did you find in these internal communications so the documents show example after example of doctors and medical providers in several states raising the alarm about one medical practices so there are two categories of wrongdoing. Here i those connected to one. Medicals leadership were given appointments. That's friends and family who weren't otherwise eligible for the vaccine. The second category involves patients the documents that npr has obtained. Show that in january. They did not properly screen out in eligible patients and did not seek to verify the eligibility of their patients to receive the vaccine. And i mean were there and staffers who privately raised concerns about this practice. That's right They they did raise concerns about this practice internally both among colleagues into their leadership but the company management responded with a shrug Medical professionals inside the company expressed consternation and alarm as they came across patients. That were healthy that we're not healthcare. Workers getting vaccinated at a time where there is scarce availibility for it so they tried to come up with a way to cancel appointments for ineligible patients for example they were told by the company's director of clinical learning quote. We are not policing. The company's medical staff also raised moral objections that the company had to police. Because to not do so would be unethical. Here's gabriel lazaro munoz who teaches medical ethics at the baylor college of medicine explaining that logic for trying to focus on those individuals who are most likely to develop severe illness or death and to most likely to be exposed to the virus so the goal is to save as many lives as possible and with that we are also not valuing any life over another i mean is that the justification that the management of medical is giving. What are they saying. Well one medical has said that. It has not knowingly vaccinated patients who were disqualified from receiving the vaccine that it took steps to screen these patients and actually takes This issue very seriously that it had fired several staff for disregarding eligibility requirements. They also blamed the fog of war during this public health crisis but this does bring up the question of who's really responsible for vetting people right. I mean i is it. Healthcare providers medical staff in the moment. Are they supposed to just turn people away. What many of these decisions are decentralized. One of the major challenges of vaccine distribution is how local jurisdictions counties states all have different rules but many counties including some which provided one medical vaccine doses require medical providers to screen for in verify eligibility at the point of vaccination now multiple jurisdictions and government. regulators have taken notice of the problems at one medical washington. State's department of public health said they had halted vaccine allocations. The company after a complaint about ineligible. Vaccinations one county in california. Said they would not give more vaccine doses to one medical. After the company expressed the plan to vaccinate in eligible populations in los angeles county so they had worn the company numerous times by phone and email. Do you have any sense of the scope of this situation. I mean how many vaccine doses have been distributed to ineligible patients across the one medical network. Well it's hard to say one medical wind say how many doses it had administered But based on the health departments that have gone back to us. We know that it's likely to tens of thousands of doses have been administered by the company. However there's no way to know exactly how many of these doses might have been given to ineligible patients. Npr investigative correspondent. Tim mack. thank you thank you.
Interview With Kelly Keller
"In today's guest is former. Alpa employees kelly. Keller kelly under private pilot's license. When she was just twenty years old she comes from a family of aviation and she calls herself a spoiled brat of aviation which seems a little harsh until you realize. She grew up flying where their father and a stagger wing. For most of her youth she learned to fly in tabora so at age nineteen got a private licence at twenty and she's been flying ever since she's worked for textron. Ao pa and now. She's currently the regional sales manager for the southeast for garment kelly. Thanks so much for joining us on the there. I was podcast so kelly. You have quite a hair raising story about flying your family back. In one. seventy two from gaskins white river resort on the way back to hicks airfield. You're flying. you're flying clubs one seventy two and experienced an engine failure. Yeah it was. It was definitely kind of the perfect storm of of situations because it was supposed to be a husband and my baby moon so to speak at seven months pregnant with our first child and had him in the airplane Labrador retriever in the backseats. Obviously mailo co-pilot with me. Yeah we were going to gaskins. White river resort for one last hurrah. It was a great trip really recommend going but on the way back i was over. Really ozark ozark mountains without many airports nearby and smoke in the cockpit. That was my first indication that there is something wrong. Obviously and i could tell. It was kind of an oily smell. But at that point it's just troubleshooting and making sure that i couldn't see that there is anything obvious. Obviously on fire or anything fatso. It's daytime is weather in issued is cleared a million Daytime midday without eleven noon timeframe. Okay in a about what time of years this this is november. So this is november last year. Okay great and about what altitude were you cruising it. So at that time. I was about to say it was about thirty five hundred feet. I wasn't up super high africa. Main reasons i was on fire away. I did not file a flight land as you know probably very few listeners would have this problem but when sediments fragment you probably need to stop somewhere young so we were we were kind of kind of just on an the our flight plan all away and having a good time and Joying enjoying barklay gut. It's the you had about a three hour flight or so home beautiful day. You just had a fabulous vacation with your husband. And you just kinda sauntering back really you know you're going to stop somewhere and you're up at three thousand feet which looks like maybe it's roughly a thousand feet ag l. or sos based on the terrain up there in that part of the country. And just flying back enjoying yourself until all the sudden you kind of start to smell a little bit of something in. Did you say you saw some smoke. Pretty much immediately fell the cockpit and you know when when that happens you always think through what that might look like in in just in our training figure out what your action plan is but until that happens to you. It's really startling. So the first thing i did was has started troubleshooting. Okay is it. Electrical is clearly a fire knows. I opened up the windows just to try to get some mayor his. Obviously i'm very cognizant of of what i'm reading that i'm you open. Open up the windows. He'll the cabin heat. Which is a crucial component. When it came down to it once they killed the cabin he smoke stopped so it was like okay you know. It's it smelled oil. A tell it was something like that and at that point dover might well pressure gauge and it was at zero at that point mike. My husband's a mechanical engineer. He's used overcrowded in a drone engines. Actually so he's very aware of of what that means is well. Luckily i was already talking to air traffic control since i was on the afar calling for that that type of a trip so immediately off with them and get them to try to at least for me to the closest

'Black grief and white grievance' at New Yorks New Museum
"Now. The new museum in new york this week open grief and grievance art and morning in america and exhibition originally conceived for the museum by the hugely influential curator of queen ways or before. He died in two thousand nine hundred nineteen grief and grievance features thirty seven artists to address the theme of morning commemoration and loss in response to the racist violence experienced by african american communities the title the museum says refers to quote the intertwined phenomena of black grief and a politically orchestrated white grievance against each structures and defines contemporary american social and political life. Curatorial advisory group has worked together to realize an interpreter. Basil's vision maximiliano gio knee of the new museum. The artist glenn ligon in ways. As regular curatorial collaborator mark. Nash and owe me beckwith scenic creator of the museum of contemporary art in chicago. He's just been appointed chief curator of the guggenheim museum in new york editor in the americas. Helen stolis spoke to beckwith about the exhibition. I wondered what's it been like bringing the show to its final stages making sure that oakley's incredible vision has been realized. What was your thinking through the process to make sure you've got this kind of final end stage oak. We have a brial mind. There were always so many things that he was thinking about and working on and he can have an idea a decade ago that manifests itself into a show much much later and so his ability to kind of hold and juggle things Intellectually and mentally that then get realized later was uncanny honestly the more that i read essays of his from about ten years ago i realized the core of some of this thinking was already there especially the core of ideas in grief ingredient. So all that is to say that this actually is unlikely to be. Oh quiz show believe it or not. They'll be more coming more things to watch and see. The man's ambitions were amazing and so lars they will extend extend far past life But in terms of grief and grievance started as a lecture series for harvard and oh a curator. He thinks through art a curious interesting. That i'm still speaking about him in present tense and so he thinks through ours and he started then to take. These ideas That he'd been mulling over these ideas around. What really are the kind of core conditions of american race relations. Where did they begin. What catalyzed them and what are the ramifications of that core This sense of black loss and a sense of white grievance let really in his mind got catalyzed around the civil war. What are those ramifications for the american polity right now our process as curatorial advisors which is what we've been calling ourselves has really been about trying to round out oh quiz vision where it was necessary. Okay already had a rather. Set schematic for the show. He had core objects that he was interested. In working with a painting of awesome blogs painting by daniel johnson another awesome. Blah's painting by jack whitten and a painting regime michel basquiat. He was really interested in these three objects as the ways to anchor away of of both thinking through reactions to Black and justice but also aesthetic forms that moved between abstraction and figuration between forms that are legible and gestures that deal. Mostly i think with the monochromatic. So these being the kind of catalyzing ideas for the show. were great signposts for us so then began to work with those themes and ideas for the rest of the checklist.

"Uh they burrow in these little tunnels create little tunnels up of two hundred fifty on all if this is meters what's m millimetres surely is not millimetres why would anybody brag about burrowing yeah that's in ondo eating sign that doesn't sound like a lot whatever it boroughs and then when it's burrowed down in there to keep people from trying to grab it or pull itself out of its tunnel it puffs up so they get stuck which is it's like the opposite of santa claus is the way i would think of it in actuality de black rain frog is not crotchety at all they're very considerate friendly animals friendly frogs if you will want during their meeting season ritual the lady frogs will secrete a special sticky substance from their backs so that the males don't fall off during the act of intercourse while isn't that thoughtful and beautiful but it nature men in sexual yeah in erotic gotta love it nature it has a the another defence mechanism is that it it does the puff up thing anytime its attacks we even if it's not burrowing into its into one of these tunnels in its attacked it puffs up much like the puffer or whatever those things are called so that it's like a cranky balloon it has evolved several unique adaptations for example it has a cleft tongue which is really weird additionally it can fold its legs underneath its body it scientific name is river cell is sick can fold its legs underneath its body like fold them completely up so that it just looks like a low round ball wow they're the scientific name of this thing is the brevity ceps fuss kiss and it resides at altitudes between sea level and three two hundred eighty feet is primarily nocturnal it is not endangered at all very well protected in terms of habitat and natural threats and really has no reason to be so grumpy looking it's just a vibe did it gives off it's like like i said it's not even that grumpy issues the coup s frog did has frown permanently and looks like a poke him on and that's the animal the week the black rain frog now you know it exists.

"This is a new one in which we tape we take hypothetical situations and and we say what we would do pretty simple it's called what would you do so the one i wanted to talk about this week is what would you do if you were jay z rich and i'm going to be clear about something here we're talking several hundred million dollars not like a multi billionaire not like an unlimited source of wealth but a multi multi multi multi multimillionaire like forbes had hove listed it eight hundred and ten million in two thousand seventeen and i want to be clear out something else uh jay z specifically because the way he got his money through multiple revenue sources including obviously rap obviously clothing like rock aware obviously the liquor business there's a variety of income streams there can i make a joke about how he he made his money the oldfashioned way and married into it he did that too i think that's i think we're talking only his wealth is eight hundred and tin beyonce's a billionaire oca earn co yet but a because jc is not a businessman he's a business man yeah of course now he has like another liquor club tool say something whatever it is cut the czech uh anyway so i'm gonna start by saying that would jay z money ought first thing i would do is by somewhere in the range of five to ten million dollar yacht we're talking about one hundred fifty feet issue i don't know exactly how much that costs at this point you don't i'm not going to go nuts within get like a three hundred for you have but a five to ten milliondollar yacht in the reasoning for this is that i have gone to experience a taste of the yacht life via friendship on multiple occasions and i don't know a fall ever be over the top that those couple of weeks that i got to spin on a yacht.
