But you know those people out there. Who aren't listening to god. What god wants you hold on. That's precious rajen of our side. Ever said that if you don't agree with the right you're not listening to god. Do you real smart ones. But you know there's people out there who aren't listening to god what guy wanted so imagine. "The godly after the cdc recommended booster shots for some americans. Confusion still remains regarding eligibilty and enroll out of a third vet pfizer vaccine. Join us dr scott gottlieb. Former fda commissioner cnbc contributory also serves on the boards of alumina and pfizer his new book uncontrolled spread why cova nineteen crisis. And we can feet. The next pandemic is out now. So many nuances to to the vaccine. Scott i you know frustrating because the panacea we had hoped for. It's not even close Breakthroughs in and viral loads of double vaccinated people in all these things. What about therapeutic that that we could get in the form of a pill like we used with other viruses. It's definitely possible to do pfizer's working on one. Burke and ridgeback are close to disrupting the replication of the virus which turns it into not even a serious flu. Almost plus the viral load never gets high enough to cause those immune immune system problems that we get to kill so many people with cohen. That's the only way we're ever getting out from underneath this. A booster every year and another one in breakthrough cases. Vaccines aren't gonna aren't going to be the answer to get us back to normal. Well i wouldn't accept that vaccines aren't going to be the answer. We don't know what the long term immunity is going to be. Especially after you boost the population. This might be three dose regimen. It might be an annualized vaccine like we take for flu and the vaccines are holding up. Pretty well to fulfill original premise. That they're preventing hospitalization severe disease even symptomatic disease in most cases With respect to that therapeutic There's news out today from pfizer. The company i'm on the board of about advancing their drug into clinical trials to prevent infection in Close contacts you're right. The merck drug is advanced as well. Roche has a drug that's also an advanced development a little further behind but looks very promising and in as a whole host of drugs that are in earlier development that were engineered specifically to target. This sars covy to virus. I do believe we're going to have an antiviral to your point. This isn't a hard virus to drug in terms of how it replicates. But i'll just offer that it's going to become increasingly difficult to run. These clinical trials in a population. We have a lot of people who've been vaccinated and a lot of people who've been infected so you know running trial to prevent progression of symptomatic disease or to prevent the onset of disease and close contacts is difficult to find treatment naive patients or virus naive patients in the united states right. Now that's a good problem to have Obviously it's got that you can't find people problems have if the reason why you can't find people 'cause they're vaccinated right It's not a good problem if it's they're infected. So aren't you for what i can't understand. It is the angst and they and they you know seeing mass everywhere again. What we thought was going to be different was three four five it in january. So what looked like. The end is nowhere near the end. Because of these breakthrough cases whether they're really really common whether they whether you're a symptomatic doesn't seem to matter anymore. Even if you're a symptomatic with the breakthrough case they're still a concern that you're gonna pass it to someone who's vaccinated and then they're going to be a symptomatic and it's going to keep getting passed until you get to someone who's either vulnerable or who's unvaccinated and it's just like this vicious circle that it's very frustrating and everybody's out look at i mean maybe there outside maybe not people inside. There's people in in stadiums there are people everywhere and you get a dirty look if you don't if you're not wearing a mask even if you're double maxed well let me just challenge for minute. First of all you're right. Everyone's out i mean. Society is functioning fairly normally. I'm not going to say it's completely normal right now but prevalence is still very high. We're still recording. Two thousand deaths a day a lot of hospitalizations on this delta wave is still sweeping across the country. So i think that's impacting behavioral psychology. And i think it's going to take a longer time for psychology to really evolve where we come to accept. Corona virus is just a fact of life and that there's going to be infections but that's going to be a point when prevalence really starts to decline and we start to see fewer hospitalizations fewer deaths. We're still really in in the throes of this. And then finally i think the reason why a lot of people are overestimate the risk of corona virus or still concerned about even if they're vaccinated know that they're not gonna get very sick but they might get a mild or eastern domestic infections because the kids are still vulnerable. I think once we're able to vaccinate children. Adults are able to vaccinate their kids. The anxiety about getting a breakthrough infection knowing that you probably not going to get very sick your odds getting very sick with very low if you're vaccinated but you could bring it back into the house. I think that's going to start to resolve so you know. This is going to be a slow evolution. You're right we've just spent a year year and a half trying to prevent every single infection and we're going to evolve to a place where this is an endemic virus and becomes a way of life where fact of life if you will It's going to be an evolution. It's not gonna happen overnight and they don't think the vaccines are going to be what drivers out of this. It's going to be when we come back. The children when prevalence declines when hospitalizations and deaths start to decline and they will they will on back into this delta wave. Scott could we talk about the booster for a second. This is the third booster available by pfizer. Not yet the case in but derna in terms of the ability to get infected one of the things. We don't know from these studies. We talk about sort of the nine ten times antibodies. But we don't know what that means in practice if the original second second shot guy you to. Let's say a ninety three percent rate now that was pre delta. What do you. What do you think the the third booster gets you too. Because part of it is people are trying to avoid hostels. -ation death but i do think there's a lot of folks including myself who would very much like to avoid infection and it seems like at least for several months after the shot or the first first vaccine or maybe the third vaccine that it there is at level of which there's almost an inauguration but maybe not yeah so good question in the public health community the premise that these vaccines are going to be used to prevent any infection at all That's where people start to get uncomfortable because they feel the premise of these vaccines that they should be used to prevent severe disease symptomatic disease hospitalization. That was the original of the vaccines and in order to prevent any infection at all you might need to continue to reboost to maintain high circling antibody levels. Now the data out of israel directly. Answer your question. And it's only one month of data that we're really looking at this point. Some some cases go out a little further than that does suggest that the immune protection at the third shot offers restores the protection that you had after the second shot. So if you're the second shot forty ninety five percent protection against any infection at all that does appear to be what you're seeing after this third dose. Now it's only short-term data. We don't know how durable the high levels of circulating antibodies are going to be an protection against infection. So it's open question right now. I mean we're going to have to continue to follow these patients but that premise that these vaccines should be used to prevent any infection at all. that's public health officials. And that's where the advisor committees got uncomfortable. Scott then then the second question and this goes to where i think joe was headed. Which is if you're vaccinated. And you've got a breakthrough infection and you give it to another vaccinated individual who therefore gets a breakthrough infection. What do you think the demonstrable dangerous in that in that context because because joe positive they were going to be dramatic and ancient dramatic. I know people who are eysenck dramatic and then.

"I begin by asking Amani what she remembered of that day given that she was just nine years old. I remember a lot actually, as young as I was because of how severe life changed overnight, You know, even though you are a child, as Children tend to do you become very sensitive to the world around you, and especially how the world around you is treating you And for me and my family. Our lives were just completely turned upside down by this tragedy. I mean, I was born and raised in New Jersey. I grew up barely 30 miles away from ground zero and 9 11 happened on my yearbook photo day when I was in elementary school, So it was definitely a significant day that's like seared into my memory and what I remember the most After our unscheduled early dismissal that day was Coming home to find my family huddled in the living room around their television set with what was happening on loop in front of us. And for me, I was still trying to perceive what that meant. What do you mean? A plane flew into these buildings? What do you mean? The buildings aren't there anymore. And my dad turned and looked at our family and said they're going to blame us and it's going to get much worse. And from there truly life as we knew it changed. I mean for me, I was suddenly subject to extreme bullying in school. I heard my first racial slur in my elementary school classroom that same year. My family's our house and our hometown was being targeted by the neighborhood kids. I would water balloon and tp our home and egg..

An old enough to know that if he's going to survive in middle school he has to make friends. But that making those friends stands to be significantly more complicated than it was back in rochester. Leo sister auden is in fourth grade. He says she's not having his heart a time of it. She hasn't been alive as long as she hasn't made a deep connections and she already met some a friend in her school. I think it's easier to make friends on the metro school on in middle school. Because people care less about who you are. What do you mean by that. He has surgery to remedy that and in the process He stopped breathing on his own. And had a tracheotomy. While he's healing. They keep trying to lower the amount that the ventilator is breathing for him, But his body wouldn't start breathing in any capacity, and the doctors gave his cousin and her cousin a choice. They could either stop the ventilator and let nature take its course. I think we know what that means. No. Or They said they could try giving him a permanent tracheotomy and have a lower quality of life. Now. Parent or Nah. I think we are all in agreement that if they give you the choice of letting nature take its course, when your kid can't breathe or doing a tracheotomy, I think we're all going to choose a tracheotomy. So, of course. Kozo chooses the tracheotomy. Kid spends a few months in the hospital. Couple months in rehab place gains a bunch of weight talks more clearly. Heidi, by the way, is a special ed teacher in Pasco. And She flew them to Tampa to get away from the chaos at their home. They're on welfare. They live with Heidi's aunt and I'll go on disability. And her cousin can't get a job because her job is to tend to jailings needs. I'm sorry. What state do they live in West Virginia? She said That is why I'm reaching out to you. This trip will be so good for them. And we can go to the beach to my neighborhood pool to visit my parents and hopefully with your help to get him to Busch Gardens. He's never been to the beach or any amusement park. He has a manual wheelchair. He'll need to be in, but he can get out of it, and he placed on rides. So this morning. Got to meet this special group of people. And escort them into a theme park. And I will tell you this kid. Has got amazing spirit. And, uh, To see his face light up when he saw he was going to be able to go in there and see some animals and go on rides. Pretty good start to the week. So it's things are things are looking up right now. Kind of so that with the tracheotomy that thing that he has that that will be permanent. You'll have that, uh, you'll have that for the rest of his life. Um, but You wouldn't know that by his spirit. He was, uh Full of life and just ready to have a great day at Busch Gardens, and it was my extreme honor. To be able to take them today. It's awesome. Thank you. Everyone who supports this show because you helped me do things like that. And thanks to Heidi and her family, for for allowing me that opportunity to a very special stuff. So let's take a moment, John. Going to come back and we will have today's game and if you win today's game You will win tickets to tonight's Tampa Bay Lightning. New York Islanders. Game five. I believe whoever wins tonight's game will win the series. Oh, wow. You're going to run that one by our buddy Davey. Yeah, I'm gonna I don't know what the percentages Probably in the seventies teams that win game five. Win the series. It was a brutal loss on the road. We gave up stupid goals. Unfathomably stupid goals. In one period. We give up three of them. If you do that you don't deserve to win a playoff game and they didn't deserve to win a playoff game and they didn't It was unfortunate, and there was some hope there at the end. Uh and that was, uh, that was exciting. But not enough length stirs in Lakeland going off when that happened to like the second goal that we scored. The place is going nuts. It felt like one of those epic moments we're about to take place. But sadly, you know, they kind of had that that last little bit of the game on lockdown, much like we did You know the game before. It's got to show up tonight. There's got to be a very passionate crowd in existence. It's got to be loud in there so loud that the Islanders can't even hear themselves. Think And you could be there. It's a pretty casting process, actually. And what are some of the locations? I mean, I know that I want to be an artist just to do this. I'm working on my finger painting, Tanya. It's not going so well. Where are some of the locations? That you have these residencies. Oh, it's we've got some really good locations. We have at least five a year at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. We have in New Mexico. We work with Chako and Fort Union and pretty soon hopefully, some other parks in New Mexico and we've worked with pay goes in the past. We don't know if we're going to do that program again. We hope so. And Holly Akala in Hawaii Dry Tortugas. In Florida. Oh, my gosh. It goes on and on Gettysburg. Um, yeah, There's a lot to give everyone a cheese her. Uh yeah, Like I said, I'm really, really hunting my finger painting skills for this. So, Tanya You obviously have had so many successes. I mean, this is just amazing. What is one failure? That really helped you? Learn in life how to overcome obstacles. Wow, Um I love this question, by the way, my most successful failure and it's kind of funny. It doesn't really have a whole lot to do with NPF, but I'll just be honest about it. When I was a kid, I was in parochial school and I was nine years old and I was feeling really Really down, you know, they threw me in a new school and I didn't have any friends. I was, you know, buying my friends with candy, You know, type that kind of you know, I realized how bribes bribes work. Hey, give you these Mentos If you're my friend, um so It was a really hard time. I was nine years old. It was It was a real bummer time in this, uh this guy came to the school and did this whole pitch about how he's going to pick out certain students that are great singers and make them famous. And so we needed to go to these tryouts and I kept on making the cut. I kept on making the cut. And I needed this so badly when I was a kid like I was, I was really bummed out, and, uh, Just put this this hope in my heart. That was amazing. So One day, you know, after school, I made another cut. I was so excited and he was billing. My parents and my parents just you know, they had a lot going on and they weren't paying him And it was fine, He said, you know, come anyway. Come anyway. And so I came and I went after school, and he wasn't there, and nobody was there and I was like, what's happening, You know, and so He told me I was I was, you know, I was going to be the one I was. You know, this is before Star search and all that I felt so good about myself. I had a wonderful singing voice. I was like, Finally, there was something I could hold onto. Until a few years ago, I didn't make the connection that maybe I wasn't a good singer. Well, maybe you aren't. I mean, I think you were bamboozled. That's not a failure. "Heart of going into comedy especially coming from the academic world is like. It's really like i mean my. I was raised around a swearing so like for me saying at four hundred is really important when you are at nine years old and see. Richard pryor live at the sunset strip. It has an impact on you and so for me like it's hard to express myself out saying the f. word or whatever that it's just to me a just a better way to communicate because i'm able to say what i wanna say and i think that's also where we can in in the disabilities studies field big. We need to look at the vote of expression in very ways that you can do that kind of work academically. You can do that on a tv show. You can do that. in common. Me and disabilities studies deeply impacts me in comedy because i don't necessarily joke about Stutter although sometimes it does happen But i really try to take aim at the barriers emmy attitudes that i encounter instead of like look at the way i top highway and you address comedians. Who make fun a disabled people in our disabilities. And how do you feel about it. What have you. What do you do in that regard. Try to address it on. I try to have a surplus of things that i say and so if the comedian goes on in front of me. Ma use the r. word. I also learned that. I can't lecture comics on you know the our word is very hurtful. It's a word that i had called that my saw john explained things to comics. You just make fun of that. In half is where i tried to make fun of them when they use words or they used the subjects and And so that is what i do in the moment And also i don't. If i produce a show i don't have people who reflects that kind of able ism and are also i communicated with my friends my friends would will lights say oh i would have said it. This way for ye. Here's a noble cena this other way and how they change their minds around that and also i think what's really important is will oftentimes. You're about a famous comic. Who says this awful ablest say and yes they should be called out all of that stuff but when that happens what i do.

"One line fishermen are known for their fish stories. Holy mackerel, but the whopper that charter boat captains Mark Pizano and Paul Strawser are about to unspool. Is all too real. That story Just really throws a loop of me. It was catastrophic. Imagining what she went through that day is unspeakable, really. 35 years ago, Paul and Mark were piloting a charter back from Catalina Island off the California coast when they came across a capsized boat. And an orange life best bobbing in the waves. Mark jumped in and pulled out nine year old desert Rodriguez. The only survivor. Her mother, father, sister, aunt and uncle all perished. As Ray had been in the water 20 hours. It was against all odds that she was still coherent in alive. This was the last time Paul and Mark ever saw little Deseret, and they've always wondered about her. Okay. Which is why a podcaster named Phil Friedman invited the men on his show. Mark Pizano, along with a surprise guest. I'm gonna let her introduce herself to you. I'm desperate. Brims of their ball caps weren't nearly wide enough to hide the joy 35 years, not nearly long enough to erase the bind. So happy when I connected with them. They brought a lot of closure. Since then they have stayed in touch. This week, Paul and Mark invited desert rape me up the aunt who raised her and the rest of her family to take a little trip. It was desert race first time back on the ocean. A journey that would bring her full circle. This basically the area right here, right back to where it all happened. Okay, back. We come together today and Camille. The bodies of her father, sister and uncle were never recovered. This'll was their first memorial, a commemoration of the family. She lost. It also a celebration of the Guardian Angels. She gained, right. Yeah, and that's how I feel. E hope Toe. No, you guys forever. You know, every says God works in mysterious ways. I feel like you know, Let's find you. A fisherman usually tell stories about the one that got away. But Paul and Mark will always cherish. The one who got to stay. Steve Hartman, CBS News on the Road. Wow. What are the chances? I know It's just so beautiful and you know if you're able to draw from that story, just the ripple effect we can have in other's lives through one. I mean, this was an act of heroism. "I think we're all just one disaster away from being cut off from power and and and electricity and heat and so knowing what you should keep in your house to be able to prepare for such an emergency and i'm not talking like doomsday pepper. I can you survive three days with nothing. But what's in your house. No electricity you know. Do you know how to to to generate enough heat. Do you know out to you. Deal off your house Do you know how to safely fire outdoors. Even in winter. It's possible to have a say fire outdoors. I grow in alaska and part of the grade school curriculum in alaska's wilderness. Survival right we were. We were nine years old when we were taught how to dig your own snow shelter. And just because. That's you know the the expectation is here in alaska. The wilderness can kill. You will have no problem doing so so they taught us. Basic survival like what's edible in the area in case you had to I don't know if that's in the curriculum in other places from what i hear from people. It's not generally not. I'd say but it sounds like a very good idea to learn what you should stash in your house. It like an emergency preparation kit in waterproof container with Matches blankets Some nonperishable foods What are they called our ease Yeah meals to eat or any freeze. Dried meal backpacking food. Anything like that. Yep so we would be a wonderful thing It would be a wonderful thing to to to have some education given to people. In general this is basic survival stuff that you need to have and and i think that's the best thing that we can learn from this is. Let's get more prepared. I absolutely i completely agree with that up to the point where instead of telling everybody what they need. Because we don't know that's the thing is different. People could need different things depending on the disaster depending on their family situation depending on whatever a what i cannot. May i recommend just learning for yourself what you needed or would have needed. Or whatever and then just share share. What you learned you know so that other people are gonna take from it whatever they want and then by accession w can take this to community you. Can you say this is the stuff that i learned. Hey neighbors let me show you what i've got right. Let me show you what i said. Let me and then if you wanna get take it even further up local legislature and say what is the the municipal plan for something going wrong You know where can we gather as a community. Where where do they have food where they have clean water speaking of politicians rio. We haven't gotten to take hers..

Thank you very much don have before we get back to the calls Don have mentioned that Baseball. Legendary baseball manager Tommy Lasorda died today at the age of 93 I I've had two small brief stories about Tommy Lasorda, remember taking my Son, who was then probably about nine to the baseball writers dinner in Boston, and Tommy Lasorda was there and my son was gathering as many autographs as he could on his program and Everyone up to Tommy Lasorda. Um, and if everyone who was there was sort of took more interest in the nine year old boy, my son in talk to him about baseball and I talked to him about how the life he had had in baseball and encourage my son only to be to bleed. Dodger Blue made quite an impression on me that he would spend that amount of time talking to my son, who They think you now know. Many of you who listened, is involved with the Worcester Red Sox and has been Working with the worst of Red Sox and the Boston Red Sox for for many years after graduation from college. The other story, which I have to tell you is that I have a friend of mine. Who say I'm Catholic nun. Her name is Mother, Olga. So with a group in order of nun called the Daughters of Mary of Nazareth, and I've got to know Mother, Olga. She is probably one of the most Highest people. I've never met Mother Teresa. But mother Olga eyes in the same category anyway. A couple of years ago, she was telling me the story that she was on an airplane. And she went back to her seat at the back of the airplane, and the flight attendant came over to her, Um And and invited her to come up to first class. On. She didn't understand what was going on, and she was seated next to the space ball man she told me on as she believed had met him briefly. Assed. They were about to board the plane. They might have even had a cup of coffee while they were waiting. But Tommy Lasorda, um, who's a very faithful practicing Catholic in his life? From all that I've read in invited Mother, Olga to sit with him up in first class, and he paid the difference for her ticket. And when she told me the story, she was all excited and And she seemed to have forgotten his name. And and I said, Well, you know how old was he and all of that? And where was your way where you're going? And so I kind of figured it out. I said, by any chance was his name Tommy Lasorda. She says Yes, That's what Woz that's what was Uh, And she was so excited to have met this baseball man on that those two stories, I think sort of To me epitomize what Tommy Lasorda was about. I didn't know him met him briefly, but I didn't know him. But, um, he would take time to talk to a little boy about Life in baseball, and he was a baseball lifer and also take the time to invite a nun who No, I did not have the means to fly first class when this plane but to spend the time so Tommy Lasorda, I'm sure was welcomed tonight into Into heaven for Ah, lot of good deeds only two of which I'm I'm aware of, and I can chat with you about rest in peace. Tommy Lasorda, a great baseball lifer. Let's get back to the phone's going to go to Gary in New Jersey. Gary Welcome. Sorry for taking a couple of the state had to tell the story. It just show you're entitled. He's probably hanging right now. With Casey Stengel and Johanna could hope I would hope so. That's true. It's probably hanging out and talking about the Dodgers from Brooklyn. Everything else? Yeah, absolutely, absolutely was left lifelong style Dodger. Yeah, At least I hope so. Yeah.
