I always have a like a light breakfast. I like to. I always wake up very early morning routine in. I like to drink some water. And then i actually like to train facet as well. Because i feel very energizing and creative in the mornings when i have my most Creative energy i can channel it. I train because it allows me to get into this meditative space of You know what i'm gonna do for the day that word show of meetings in just really get creative and then afterwards i'll come home and it will probably be like around like eleven or twelve and my first meal and it's normally just a protein shakes so some type of smoothie with protein powder in it and my smoothies pretty bay and i generally like. It's super easy on a on a keep it simple stupid kinda guy like just the easier. It is for me to make and less less time. It takes the more like the an to do it so smoothies for me. Throw it all in a blender. Do some plant milks and protein powder lots of blueberries Lots of varies generals greens also put in some Some things like leg oshawa gonda maka powder also do alma powder which is like indian gooseberries which has a lot of like anti inflammatory properties recovery. After training session. That'd be like my first meal and then throughout the day. I normally really rely on like stir fries like something that i can cook in a pan with some vegetables. Some tofu or tampa bay. I'll put some kind of non oil based sauce on there. Put a ton of herbs and spices normally at tend to go more towards the The the indian kind of spices and like the curry as the cuban tumor egg All of those types of spices. Because that's kind of how. I was raised so i'll do like a stir fry or like a buddha bowl has like grain sweet potatoes greens lots lots of color. I think that's really important for people to just diversify the amount of color that you have on your plate. And you're naturally going to get Lots of antioxidants in lots of of of key nutrients can help you recover and for dinner. i eat really late. What most. i don't know like burritos I'll have the occasional pizza. The pizza do megan sushi Pasta i mean you name it. I eat it but the the key here is to really keep the core of your recipes in the core of your the meals that you're eating healthy and try not to have that many you know processed foods. Try not to you know if you're going to cook with oil lake. Use it as a tool and not as an ingredient. There's there's ways around cooking with oil that are tasty you can use like a vegetable broth or use liquid knows from brags that's a really great alternative And just make sure you have like more vegetables than anything else like if you just kinda follow those basic guidelines than natural. You're going to eat really healthy and you're going to have a a diverse nutritious meal player. "What i realized was that those things that i did not bring me fulfillment didn't bring me joy and they weren't true to me like i was. I was suffering on the inside. And i think that was because my life was misaligned with who it was i truly am and i think that through fitness And really just doing the thing. That made me happy really just finding that thing that i was excited about and passionate about and leading into it enter really committing to that. That really unfolded this life that i'm living now and true that i found that not only can i. Can i do the thing that really makes me happy. And feel good and allows me to show up as my truest most authentic expressed self. But i could also be of service to other people and realizing that this gift that i have which is it really is just like i don't know how to phrase but like perspective from a very i would say You know by my biggest challenge growing up was was acceptance right or feeling the need to be accepted within a within a community in recognizing that the only acceptance that i need is for myself and once i leaned into that then really everything else unfolded the way it did and through that i feel like i found my purpose because i can not only inspire people to be healthy but really just embrace who they are and give them permission to follow their passion and follow their purpose and really it starts with cleaning up your physical vessel and if you feel good if you if you're in tune with your body and you don't have any kind of like ailment or illness or you know Disease that's going on inside. It really allows you to tune in to who we are. And what makes you happy and if you can just kind of like get that out of the way than it frees up all this space to explore that an reflect inexperience and just really be honest with yourself..

"Writings a great. I got probably a million tips but gave one matt. Joe the one that jumps out at me. I is setting a goal. That is the number one thing you know. You can people talk about the things that they wanna do. But it's rarely. It's rare that they actually set the goal. And when you set a goal for yourself it should be defined like clearly defined as much as possible. And what i mean by that is i. Give yourself a date. You know. Put a put a sense of urgency to it. Don't put it off until next year. You know don't just put it open ended by give yourself a date to work towards The other thing that you should really define as you're y you know. Why are you doing the things that you wanna do. What is the real reason behind the goal that you're setting for yourself and it could be deeper than what you think is most people like. I want to lose ten pounds. Okay that's a great goal y while feel good in my body okay. Why do you want to feel good in your body. Because i've i've i've spent years feeling not confident feeling like some bit of maybe even shame around my body maybe I just want to be able to walk up the stairs. Dhabi out of breath. I want to be able to run with my kids and not feel like i can't keep up like there's there's there's real reasons beyond the surface that are driving you so if you can tap into those drivers in remember why it is that you want to do the things that you do. It's a lot easier to stick to those goals. Instead of just being like odds more loose out because of the number on a scale and society tells me should be at this number like. That's not a real reason that is is not personalized. It's not tied to an emotion. And i think that if you can find the emotion or even in think of who it is that you want to become the best if i could get somebody is like really imagine and to find who it is that you want to become. Who is the person that you want to embody. Do you want to be a representation of health. Do you want to embody somebody. That is five is light exudes vitality somebody that is you know just radiating and feel good and confident and really secure with who they are and what they wanna do like all of those things. You should ask yourself like. How do i wanna expand and grow and then just like write list down and then anytime you feel like. You're not going to do the thing that you committed to like. Go back to that and say wait a minute. This is the old me talking. The old comfortable me that wants to stay put in this familiar comfort zone and is limiting myself wants to stay put but the new person i told myself and on becoming. They're gonna show up. They're gonna put in the work and eventually it won't feel like such a challenge anymore. It'll just become a way of being. And i think that you know when you embody something fully than it does. It just becomes effortless after a certain point in this. I get asked this question all the time. How do you stay. Lean maintain your muscle. It's just a way of being at this point. Like i've trained myself to eat healthy to train every day to really prioritize my health my mental physical and spiritual health and the rest is just everything falls into place after that you know becomes non-negotiable at that point just of who i am. I think those are really great tips for anybody. That's listening and wants to start. Their journey is really define..

"Provides you with enough nutrients for for building muscle I think that most physicians normally talk about like a whole foods plant based diet From the very far end of the spectrum you don't like no oil no signal. Salt hopefully plant based on processed foods. That is great for people that are at that point in their lives. Most people are not most people are a little bit further down the spectrum as far as like. What's realistic brian. Most of the time. That's not realistic to be That attuned to your diet in that concerned with it. So i think that most doctors can you know talk about what they read them on paper but doesn't always translate to reality. I know this to from being an engineer. You know sometimes. The design of something looks fantastic. On paper you get out into the field in their. The technicians are building it. And they're like do. This doesn't work like we have to find another way to make practical and make it work And you just have to work with it and and that's the same thing with with with supplements you know is not necessary but it can be very convenient. Yeah there's there's a couple of things. I think a folks that aren't in the elite rounds and obviously that's a very small percentage of the population but also certainly The folks that you're marketing to Around for my my training days l. Those years is i've found you know like you said the sheer volume of fu-tsu that i had to put in was just literally nauseating to me. I would get to the point where. I felt nauseated for eating so much. My teammates and i used to sit down and call it for seating because we literally had to take in you know we were on our five thousand six thousand calorie of the day in itself. Taylor are both a public on social media and you guys have been able to transition from the romance to a friendship and business partners which you always were. I think there's so much that people could learn from I mean i'm sure you're still journeying through it. But thus far that successful transitions so many of us are in loving relationships that that that are all also in business together and have a real sticking point to be able to transition because of jealousy or anger or blame. The list is really endless with the reasons could be. But i'm hearing you talk about a him second in kindness and Really just being fair and loving each individual beam on this on this planet that that we share and it it made me think about this that transition with the with the human human that you just made and i'm wondering if you can share some of the how the how you guys did it in the suggestions that you might give others that are potentially right now in that. Very same position of You know maybe innate romance but wanting to continue and in another way yeah. This is a great question and it was. It was definitely you know. Twenty twenty was was an interesting year obviously for everybody was challenging and so many challenges and really forced a lot of people to take a good look at their relationships and it was almost You know with the with the with the restrictions lockdowns was almost like a pressure cooker. Whatever issue or thing that was unresolved or internalize resentment or frustration or anything that was there before twenty twenty seemed to just be the pressure cooker to boil it to the surface and really allow us to take a good look at it and what we what we realized in our relationship was that it very entangled with personal and business and i think that it ultimately kind of led to our realization. That we need to consciously uncouple so that we can take a good look at ourselves and Continued to grow individually separate from each other. And i mean who knows possibly in the future reconnect as something else or something greater or just remained friends but there was there was always so much love between us. And i think that communication was the biggest component of that and really really communicating. Your needs maintaining your boundaries and then also listening to your partner in what their needs are and really removing your own bias or your own kenyans with what you think. They should be doing or vice versa. That way you can really understand what it is that they're truly asking for or wanting or desiring and Whenever we made that transition you know is very difficult. Because not only was i jane. Both of us were experiencing personal challenges. But we also live very publicly..

It's written in sanskrit in its says a hymns which essentially translates into nonviolence and that is one of the core values that i have is to really try to live a life of nonviolence and not contribute to anybody any other living beings suffering because we're all suffering in our own way and we're all fighting a battle that everybody knows nothing about and that translates to even the the actions the words that we use even the thoughts that we had about ourselves and other people if we can have more loving compassionate thoughts and act accordingly than the world around us would be a much different place but unfortunately It's not perfect right now but you know even the food that we eat that is a form of either of compassion or violence and if you simply refrain from consuming animals who by their very are deceased or dead on your plate then you remove yourself from that contribution and with each action that you do. You're you're basically choosing to live a life of of compassion so that is one way of looking at you know just something simple as eating. It can be an act of compassion or an act of violence. What is it like out there as a whole in terms of vegan bodybuilders Or physique you're you're the only member of the international federation or body but dottie mentioned. Ifc be in your introduction to have never eaten meat and one. The only vegans is that correct. Tell us what it looks like out there in terms of vegan bodybuilders will. I think that it's it's growing. I think the sport is at. I mean from a vegan. Bodybuilding perspective is expanding. There's been a few people that have come on the scene. You know i was tired back in two thousand. Eighteen kind of white really haven't looked back. Since a insult point there was very very few people. that were that were competing and succeeding. I think those are two different categories. Anybody can join a contest but how many people actually win or how many people actually have. Success is a totally different story. So i think it's important to have representation in the sport and not just People that are being but people that are actually winning in showing that it's possible not to step on stage but to actually beat. Your your appears that are have been conditioned to believe that there's no other way so this is like that was honestly why i chose the sport and it chose me but that was why i followed through with it so much was because i figured matt if i were to have success in the sport in a sport that senator around building muscle and almost like a representation of health in some ways That it would inspire people to open their mind and think that if it's possible for a bodybuilder that.

He decided he wouldn't just compete but he would lead by example to prove that building muscle is possible on a completely animal free in the five years since its first competition is gained nearly six hundred and fifty thousand instagram followers in educated the masses about the benefits of a vegan diet. I i got to meet me my on a rainy evening in two thousand eighteen at the sundance film festival as we were about to premiere the documentary film. We are in the game changers knee. My is somewhat softspoken. He's kind he's generous and there is so much more to him than his bulging biceps. One of which i learned is aptly named chickpea the other one. I i'm gonna let you tell everyone and welcome to the show. Thank you dot c. For that awesome intro. If i remember correctly. I think i made the other one grapefruit. I couldn't remember for the frigate life and it was pissing me office mornings. I just couldn't get to come to me. So yes chickpea in grapefruits so knee my you know. Gosh is a as a former athlete myself. I get asked that ridiculously. Although we that it's important to people Where do we get our protein. My answer to that question has actually changed over the years is i continue to try and kind of make it a clearer answer and easier answer for people able to understand and apply says wondering what your answer to wear. Do you get your protein. What your answer was. Let's say five years ago and what your answer is today. That's such a great question in unlike you alluded to earlier. I definitely wish that. I had a dime or nicole or even penny for anytime. Somebody asked me that question would-be on a yacht right now as we have been hearing that question maybe in a different form my entire life You know given the fact that i was raised vegetarian In the south where animal products are a large portion of their diet. I was always ask why didn't eat meat or you know. What was the reason why i was vegetarian. And i didn't really recognize it at the time whenever i was younger. But especially those conversations that i had early on. Were kind of driving me for what i'm doing now and it took me a long time to realize i kind of saw those as interrogation Maybe some of them were and some of them came from a lack of understanding in place a judgment but really what i learned as time went on was that people are unaware of an alternative way of living and that is exactly what this plant based vegan lifestyle. Whatever you want to label it as Has taught me is that it doesn't have. You don't have to follow the same thing that everybody else is following. There are alternative ways to live that yield the same results or may be even more beneficial to you. You're just unaware of so my answer to that question is definitely evolved. From in the past it was a little bit more direct. As far as i just started listing. The food that i ate. Which is you know. It's common knowledge at this. Point is just you know. Beans legumes. Protein shakes tofu. Tempe those are like my main sources of light protein dense foods and then beyond that i mean all plants contain Contain protein when you combine them it they add up and it doesn't necessarily have to be a singular item on your plate. You label as a protein source. You start to look at your plate. More collectively say years a little bit of protein. Some other protein years allow And that kind of answer Lasted for quite some time..

"You have imagined for yourself read this book you will not be able to put it out until you until you finish so make sure you have a little bit of time. Would you pick it up and number. Three for me is Called merchants of doubt wolf. This book was suggested to me. It's a it's a. it's a tough read. it's it it is very is filled with science but This book is basically about how a handful of scientists obscured the truth on issues from tobacco smoke global warning and it is one of the most important books i have ever read and what it has to say needs to be heard. This book tells with what i think is is just a kind of a brutal clarity. The disquieting story of how a loose knit group of high level scientists with deep connections to politics and industry ran effective campaigns to mislead the public and deny well established scientific evidence for over four decades. Although dairy is not mentioned in merchants of doubt to me this is the story of manipulation and it is the story of exactly how gary has a stronghold in american politics american government. So check that out if you're curious so we're stoked on our guests we ne- We have on we with loved this conversation with him. Bummer news we had trouble with our video connections so this one is audio only folks which is kind of a sad deal but we audio. It's really come through so we. My delgado is not your typical bodybuilder. He's a man of i. "Here with my co host dot c. Bausch high dadzie. Hello so i hear you have some books that you'd like to recommend we're going to start our own sort of a indeed book club right. Yes yes we are. We're gonna do this books. Our favorite books that we feel like our must reads for people for twenty twenty. One great. i'm going to start off alexandria with just saying this upfront. But i'm not the gal to guide your reading. If you're a fiction fanatic. I pretty much hate fiction. Books films play as you name it. It's it's i don't think it's that i don't have an imagination and don't like wild creativity. It's just that when i sit down to soak up a story whether it's on a page or in the theater am so much more entrenched when i know this story actually happened and i think in my own way. That's kind of my creativity. Because when i know something actually took place. My mind is allowed to go wild with wondering kind of what that scene must have meant when it actually happened to those people what that kiss must have felt like when it had been so long. Orc what that decision that person made to take. Let's say the road less traveled actually met for the world that we live in. Especially if it's like a historical film and for me Fiction represents the created the creativity. I guess in and the real genius of of the writer of the creator. But i personally have a hard time imagining anything else beyond when they put on paper right or what they put on the screen but nonfiction allows my mind to just go wild with the what ifs and the how to's and it allows me to imagine kind of a whole world beyond what the screen shows us right. It allows me to get into the mind of of the of the character. An maybe imagine what might have been real for that character whose life i'm learning about. That may be. They're not showing us on screen but was kind of their experiences behind closed doors. So if you like nonfiction. Get your notebook outs. Because i have my top three ready to share with you all and our audience for twenty twenty one. The first one number one by a long shot is is a book. Called standing at the edge with joan halifax. it's the author. This book.

"Okay here we are season two of the plant strong podcast. I'm here with Nima Delgado, I pronounce that. Perfectly. and. The theme for Season Two is the heart of a hero. Obviously with you, you have more than the heart of the of a hero you have the APPs of a hero you have quads of a hero. But it's people that are really changing the game. And no no doubt about it. You are. You're changing the game you've taken a completely different path than the traditional path. the last eighteen months have been incredibly impressive for you. You're on the cover of muscle and fitness April two, thousand eighteen. You obviously one of the stars in the, game? Changers. You. Or, your social media influence over four hundred, thousand followers on your on your I. Pretty. Pretty impressive. Are you happy where you are right now? Yeah. Happy. But never satisfied like a true athlete right I think. I have big goals and ever since I started this, I didn't have those goals when I first started. This was kind of something I just ended up on this path and once I, was in it it felt right to me. So I ended up pursuing it but. Since I've seen what's Possible, to accomplish. Whenever I started I now, my goals are set really high so we'll. We'll talk about that. Yeah of course before we do Tell me how old are you just turned? Thirty thirty years old so I mean you're you're you're still a spring chicken. That's really exciting when I think about where I was when. When I was thirty, I wasn't even a firefighter yet I mean I was I was doing triathlons. It's exciting. And so. When people say you know what you do? Are you a professional bodybuilder? What's your description? That's a really good question sometimes, I don't even know what to say Because I although I am a professional bodybuilder, I've never competed in bodybuilding for income if that makes sense. So it's not something that you really pursue for money because there's not much money in the sport as more money like making businesses around what you do in maybe sponsorships and everything like that. So I wouldn't say I'm a professional body just like A. Hobby. Bodybuilder. Well. But. I mean. To me re the first Vegan to ever get on the cover of muscle and fitness. Yes to my to my knowledge and I asked them their knowledge as well at the first Vegan to ever be on the cover and how did that come to pass Funny Story I was actually competing two thousand eighteen for the Arnold Classic and even just to compete at the Arnold you have to get invited. So it was like a really big accomplishment for me to even get invited because that's like the top thirty guys in my category. So I got invited and I was training really hard up for that show because I wanted to make a big impact and just like every time I step on stage it's not just stepping onstage for me. It's like. Almost, like stepping onstage for the entire being and movement, everybody's looking to me to use me as an example. So that adds a little bit of added pressure for me but. I take that with you know what I mean. It motivates me a lot. So I was prepping for that show and Muslim fitness had reached out to me because we had done a shoot in the past and they reach out to do another shoot for them, but it was more for was more for like a workout and I was going to be the model and I had done that before and this time around. I just straight up ask the editor I was a hey, is there any way I can share my story of what I'm doing because I feel like your listeners might be really interested in it like I'm the only Vegan in my league competing the Arnold Blah Blah Blah and told him my story and they really loved it and when we went to do the photo shoot. They basically pulled me aside and hey, we're going to do a cover try and I was like what's that and he's like well, we're GONNA try to get you on the cover, but we're just gonNA take some some shots if we're doing a cover shoot and I was like okay cool. But I really try to keep my expectations really low I was like that's not going to happen never going to happen and yeah, a few months later maybe a month later two months later. A friend of mine actually sent me a text message of the cover with me on it and I'm like, what is this joke in me right now like photoshop this and send it to me. He's like I just got the email in my inbox and it's you on the cover and I was just like you do a backflip no, I just I was just sitting in disbelief and I remember looking at it I was like there's no way this just happened and because I knew Mike. What a personal accomplishment it was for me but like a victory for this movement and everything that I've been trying to do because, I knew that there hadn't been one before. So for me to be the first one kind of door for for other athletes because I'm sure there's going to be plenty in the future or you have been since but yeah, it was just like a really good moment that I'd like to just take in huge. Yeah. So You keep using the term Vegan how would you describe your lifestyle? Lifestyle. Vegan I wear the badge. You know I'm not afraid to say the word. Vegan I'm not afraid to be labeled as a Vegan because it is who I am and I really think that. There's been a misconception about around the word Vegan for a while now, and it kind of is getting better I feel. But I think it's about rebranding the word and. Changing the way feel whenever they hear the word Vegan instead of feeling like judged they should feel excited or feel inspired or feel empowered or however they feel I think we should just kind of shift that a little bit. So seeing people that are calling themselves Vegan and doing things that other people are inspired by I think it's a really good way of. Rebranding.
