Today, 25 people have had their convictions overturned due to misconduct by the detectives. Illinois comptroller susana Mendoza continues to beef up the state's rainy day fund. Mendoza deposited another $150 million into the emergency fund, bringing the balance to a record high of $1.22 billion. We'll be depositing between this payment and the next three that we're going to plan to do by June 30th. We'll have another 850 million, so that will bring us to 1.9, but it's important to keep in mind that it's still not enough. Mendoza is pushing lawmakers to approve a bill that sets up regular deposits into the rainy day fund when the Illinois economy is strong. The city has broken ground on a $3.8 billion lakefront facility in bronzeville that will be used for a variety of things. The multi use facility will be built on the historic site of the former Michael Reese hospital on the south side and when it's completed over the next 14 years, the master plan will include over 5000 new residential units, 20% of which would be affordable units, the rehabilitation of the singer pavilion, a new senior housing building as well as new retail and office space, a data center, and even a 40,000 ft² community center. It's expected to bring 10,000 new jobs to the neighborhood and an estimated total investment of nearly $3 billion. Kevin wells WGN news. And the Senate voted to end the nation's COVID-19 emergency declaration yesterday. The GOP led resolution was passed 68 to 23 to end the national emergency that's been in place since 2020. The bill is now on the way to the desk of President Biden. The president says he'll sign the bill as the administration was already planning to end the emergency declaration in May. Mitchell nets 29 as Cavs rally past Bulls, win streak hits 6
"The Cavaliers turned to 13 point third quarter deficit into a 97 89 win over the bulls. Cleveland crawled out of the hole with a 43 17 run that put the Cavs up by 13. Donovan Mitchell led the charge by scoring 19 of his 29 points in the second half. Jared Allen delivered 23 points in ten rebounds. We just had to give an effort. You know, why not try? "Turned it over 21 times in this game. So not shooting well, combined with 21 turnovers. But when demar Derozan Nikola vucevic and led Zach lavine combined issued 21 of 71 from the field, you're not going to win. It's just impossible. Vuch and Levine were combined four of 20 from three. If you just look at their scoring lines, they all look like not too bad. 24 and 17, Levine, 18 points, ten rebounds. Derozan 18 8 and 6. They missed their big momentum shots. Exactly. And you just got to look at those shooting lines. They're just so awful. I mean, they shot 32% now. I guess you look at it and say, hey, you know, we shoot a little bit better. We probably win this game. Just a couple guys make the shots. They usually make and we win this game. But on the flip side, Milwaukee's not going to turn out 21 times again in this series. There are also not going to commit. As poorly as they did either. So that's tough. When you get the other team to play, that's my guess is that this is the worst the bucks will play in this series. And this might be the worst of the bulls will play in the series too. It wasn't a pretty game for sure. I mean, 93 to 86 was the final score, but did you watching this game at any point feel like the bucks were really going to lose? No, I didn't either. And that's what that's what I'm talking about. Even as sloppy as this game was and as ugly as this game was, it felt like the bucks had this well under control pretty much the entire way. Yeah, I can't say that about the next one. Yeah. "If your Boston though, you actually have a pretty real if you move market smart for an expiring contract like a Joe ingles, right? You actually have a pretty real pathway to real flexibility this summer. You can do something like not pick up the Al Horford what is it? I think it's like 13 million guaranteed something like that. Create 13 million of cap space that way. You create the 17 million of cap space that you get by not having Marcus smart on the roster for next season. I personally think that it would be pretty easy to move some of their younger players. Like if they wanted to move that Romeo Langford deal off of the books for a second round pick or something, I think a lot of teams would probably be pretty interested in taking a flyer on him. It's actually pretty easy for them to get to a point where they have real flexibility going into this off season with basically like Jayson Tatum, jaylen Brown, Robert Williams as like the three guys that they're building around and then keep a couple of young guys on the roster as well. I mean if I'm them, I'm trying to do that because I think that this season for Boston look, they're not good enough to win a title. We just strongly believe that, right? Yeah, yeah, they're not winning the title this year. I mean, they were playing team. Maybe? Yeah, like, they're somewhere between the 6 and the 8 seed. Yeah, maybe the jacket. Right. They sneak if they get the 5 C they snuck there. Totally. So you're in that ballpark, right? You and I both believe that just because of the ridiculous advantage they have of having jaylen Brown and Jason Tatum that their aims should be higher. I kind of think that this season does not matter for Boston. The season that matters is next season because that's when jaylen Brown has two years left on his deal going into next season. They need to start proving starting next season to jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum that they're building something sustainable that they can actually build around them long term. Now I think that there is a world also where I wonder if they could be like the third team in a deal for Ben Simmons and end up with Ben Simmons. Right, like that gets complicated and I don't know how you would necessarily do it, salary wise, like it would have to involve Al Horford going somewhere else and then like it almost have to involve maybe we'll pitch the Ben Simmons Celtic steel later. Because I have an idea. Someone asked me about jaylen Brown for Ben Simmons. And I was like, why would Boston give up Jalen Brown? No, I have a people are crazy, man. Yeah, no, I would much rather have jaylen Brown than men sentence. I have a weird three team trade that I think could actually make some sense for everyone. His Oklahoma City in it? No, it involves Portland. But we'll talk about that when we move to Ben Simmons here. And we'll talk about that in a minute. As we kind of move through this. But if your Boston, you need to start proving to jaylen Brown and Jason Tatum starting next season, I think that you can build a championship contender. The best way for them to do that, I think, is to clear out everything on the roster outside of Robert Williams. Next to those guys and try to build new. Just like the Chicago Bulls did around Zach lavine and Nikola vucevic this summer. Like that, that, to me, is the pathway for the Celtics. Get all sorts of flexibility, do it that way. I frankly think and this is why I go back to the Joe engels and first round pick for Marcus smart move because I frankly think they'd probably be if not the same, maybe even a little bit better with Joe ingles right now than Marcus smart because I think that they just really need the specific skills that Joe ingles brings to having like a competent well flowing offense. But man, I think that that's the pathway for the Celtics. They need to kind of clear out everyone around jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. Not trade jaylen Brown or Jason Tatum. That just doesn't make any sense to me, unless, again, I think that what happens is you get two really good players and people start to put their own spin on everything. Oh, well, Jason Tatum and jaylen Brown don't get along. Man, I don't know. I don't pay attention to any of that stuff, so it will catch me by surprise if that's true. But we heard that about embiid Simmons along a long time ago too and certainly I guess that has kind of come to head. But I don't care. You've got two of those guys that are really, really impossible to find in the league. You don't give up either one of them. Because guess what? Look around the league. You know what the bulls did. They went out and they got a couple of connectors. And then they duplicated Zach lavine with demar Derozan, right? They've got an inside out attack with guards now. So smart teams figure it out. Is Boston smart. That's what we're going to find out. Is bossing going to find a way to put three guys around Jason Tatum and jaylen Brown that maximize them. Forget the team stuff. Stop thinking about it as a basketball team. You got to optimize those two guys and then build the team out. You've got the hard things to get. Boston is yet to do that. For whatever reason, stubbornness, whatever you want, the offense, where everybody tries to touch the ball, but nobody ever gets to the basket or gets to the free throw line, that they're still running, it's frustrating. So there are systemic issues there. Part of it is not having good fits around those two guys. Part of it is the way that they do things. Just isn't very good. So, you know, improve or don't. And then those guys leave as free agents. This is the beauty of free agency. Yeah, they need to figure out how they can build around. And look like, I don't mean to absolve jaylen Brown and Jason Tatum. Both of them. Well, they could particularly, I think both of them, some of the issues that people say about those two playing together, I think are real. They both do tend to stop the ball. Jalen Brown is not an incredible passer in terms of making reads for his teammates. I think Jayson Tatum is a pretty good passer, but Jason Tatum has a propensity to hang onto the ball a little bit more in a little bit longer and survey the scene to where it can sometimes stagnate what Boston is doing on offense. And that combo together, I think can be can lead to stagnant offense. But to me, Chicago, again, is showing that with guys that are great connective tissue players like Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso, kind of like you're saying, Dave, you can work through having guys like Zach lavine and demar Derozan both of whom do you like to survey? Do you like to create their own shot in both of whom are willing passers, but much better on the scoring front than on the passing front, you can make that work. And I think that what the bulls did this summer is the pathway for the Celtics. And I think that if I'm Brad Stevens, who's now running the show, I think there are real pathways to get there. And I think that the pathways get there to be honest probably by moving Marcus smart. I think that that's kind of the move for them at this point. I feel bad saying it because I think Marcus smart is mister Celtic and he kind of stands for everything that that organization has stood for over the course of the last what, 7 years that he's been there, it feels like, but I don't know. I'm just at the point where I think that it might be time for a change there. And you can't make the change. You don't keep market smart to move jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, that is legit. I don't know. Anybody thinking that this team should or is going to move jaylen Brown or Jason Tatum? Now watch them trade Jason Tatum next week and I look like a real idiot. But I just don't see that happening. Okay, let's go to let's take a quick commercial break and then we'll move to the Ben Simmons of it all because I think that that is the biggest name on the market that actually could be moved this season..

"Yeah, you're generating that and going back to the bulls for a second. We've been having a really good pre season, which who the hell knows what that means, but can I tell you? Yeah. That means nothing. Yeah. Okay. Well, so that you know record for the Celtics is like. For the Celtics. It's wrong. Yeah, but only when the Celtics win. If they lose, it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter yet. But did you see who's starting for the bulls, though? Yes. Exactly. Yes. We're starting at shooting right now. Nikola vucevic. Yep. I'm missing two others. The shooting. Demar Derozan, and then there's one name that you are very familiar with from Boston, who's also starting. Oh, dude, yeah, they svante. Javonte green has put up some really nice numbers. In Chicago as a 5th man and who knows if to watch. I mean, he started in the preseason last year for the Celtics and then that lineup kind of disappeared as the season went on. But that's another one. Again, when you look back at it, that would have been a great 15th guy to have here. And I'm not going to complain about the test guy. And they kept, you keep, you don't dump Carson Edwards to keep Jason Tatum's like, buddy, who's giving you something? Was there ever an explanation? I mean, the explanation was they were getting under the tax. And I think what happened here was it was so close to the buzzer at the trade deadline is that the bulls just held the facility for an office over a barrel and said to take the salary that was necessary to keep them under the tax. So that was tice. That was devonte green and they had to send money. A couple of $1 million of both of those guys. To make it work. And so the bowls are probably like, wow, we'll give a Carson effort. They're like, no, or if we take ours ever, you gotta give us like $6 million, something outrageous. Like, all right, fine, devonte green. And I don't know for sure that's how it happened, but just the timing wise, that deal came like after the buzzer. So I think it was a situation where everything else that they may have been doing fell apart, which can happen, but now you look at a year later and Carson's, you know, looking hopefully he's looking at deals overseas right now. You got dunked by Memphis before the preexisting even started. And now green is signed for cheap in Chicago and actually playing meaningful minutes there. So again, just appreciating we don't know the sellers have plenty of wing help there, and ne Smith Langford will get to all these guys a little bit that are looking good, but that was a guy in terms of roles and fit that probably should have just taught onto.

"And he's older, so there's a chance that the third year of that deal is not particularly good. I just kind of don't care. I will do. I don't care. He is really good. And I think that the people who have kind of brought him up as this ball dominant like black hole of basketball, just haven't watched him play the last couple of years. Like you watch him in San Antonio, he was one of really has developed as a great passer. This is something that I mentioned late in his Toronto tenure that he was really getting better as a passer. Nobody seemed to believe me then. It seems like the people who have watched him in San Antonio are starting to believe now that he is an actual passer. Like you can throw him the ball on a second side action. He can get into the paint and he makes high level kick out past as he makes for high level dump off passes. He's a really good pick and roll playmaker for a team that needs secondary creation next to Zach lavine in the backward. Lonzo Ball is a transition like out on the break, grab and go, we're gonna get the offense going guy. And he's a great floor spacer in the half court and he's good defensively. He does a lot of different stuff. And I think that's a great signing for them too. And we'll talk about that in a minute. Zach Levine needs help, though. In terms of creating offense. And I think that Nikola vucevic is going to work as a really good pick and roll partner for both of those guys. They're going to have 48 minutes of really high level offensive creation out on the court now because you can stagger the Zach lavine and demar Derozan minutes. I think this is a home run off season for Chicago. The more I think about it, the more I really love what they did, even if I do agree with some of the criticism that they may have topped themselves out a bit, but I think that where they topped themselves out was more in trading for vucevic as opposed to what they did this off season. This off season is a reaction to moving Wendell Carter and multiple first round picks for Nikola vucevic and trying to keep Zach lavine, but once you do that and decide to go all in on the vucevic Levine corps, this is the best move that you can make following that move in order to give this core a chance at least. He comes over from denver where they're built around very skilled european center and his first move is to trade draft picks and a young prospect. That hasn't worked out for a skilled european center. I think it's very very fascinating. The fact that they are both named nikola just takes it to the next level now in terms of kind of their longer term play. I think it was the right idea to cut out on. Wendell carter He is looked overwhelmed. A lot to me. I really liked him as a prospect kind of coming into the draft but the injury issues have absolutely been an issue. has it really found an offensive role. Not sure he's ever really gonna develop into kind of that stretch five that could really make him super useful and i'm just wondering what is his ceiling. Right i mean is he gonna wind up being a guy who is just kind of a solid backup but not a full time starter. If you can't stay healthy who knows. I do feel bad for orlando's training staff. I mean marquel foltz wendel carter junior mogambo and jonathan isaac. If you could turn injuries off that team sounds pretty. Awesome for the next three or four years and really really intriguing. Unfortunately life isn't a video game and that could wind up being a really busy couple years for orlando's training staff and a really couple frustrating years for orlando's fan base the draft picks are interesting chicago could potentially move into the playoff picture in which case those draft picks might both be outside of the lottery. Which would be a little bit. Frustrating but orlando does get significantly worse in the short term. So they're sort of angling potentially to have the worst record in the league this year so if they come out of this with the number one pick.
