Rafa remains, bubble struggle and whats that hair?

"Thank you so much for those lovely words. How about this every time we told with. Somebody's favorite tennis. Podcast catherine who to thaw is almost as if we've just encouraged this and frankly that's exactly someone from newfoundland n-i-l-l-a-s only finland is i'm going to try and retrain myself to announce it that's where the good dogs come from. Is it for what good about them. They are big and cuddly and fluffy and Do you remember caesar. May he rest in. Peace martino trace lovely doke He was found. Oh well yes. Now that was a splendid dog portray if the dog world say nancy. Congratulations for being from there. yes so nancy back kicked out of thank you so much into all the others that have introduced show this week. We really appreciate it and yeah. That's why we able to do this every single day of the finals. And we've got a few more to go. Today was a funny all day. We kind of previewed. It didn't we last night as much as the afternoon. Look like a much meaning to it. There was just not meaning. Those they were dead rubbers after all posted doubles and the singles and then the evening section. We always knew is going to be a knife edge type scenario you win. You guys drew you lose. You got home like a normal tournament. Let's start there showy because rough on the dow has beaten stefan pass in three sets. It wasn't like last year's when i didn't feel i thought it was. I mean i thought the dow played really. Well i've role. But i mean obviously there's no crime but last year they played a three center in and it was just epic. Wasn't it every every point felt like a a saga this. This didn't feel that that to me what to you. Know i felt like steph sits pass could have been prepared to die out there tonight and it still wouldn't have been enough He he cannot get close to the dull serve. I know there's the anomaly of the fact that he is beaten in one song clay Madrid in one thousand nine hundred. But let's just take that out of the equation and it's possible it's possible that sits has a bit of an adult problem And one that he's not getting any closer to solving think it's more than possible. I think he has a nidal problem. And i think he's a pretty big one. It's okay to have nato problem. Nidal is really really good. You know most of the world has had an adult problem for fifteen years. But he's not getting closer. It would sing and sits up past. Thinks he's got into dow problem doesn't am and he he's i it is he having seen his press conference. We'll talk about that in a minute. I think he will be going an obsessing for the next six weeks. Ah bat how to solve his dow problem matt's you you watched it what what jumped out at you from their match or yeah if i if you've got an adult problem. You've got a bit of a men's tennis problem haven't really because nadal is always going to be. There is a constant if you can't overcome the dull you're going to struggle to win the biggest tournaments i would. I would suggest certainly at the moment for the next year or two wall dolls exactly around anyway So yes short turn. That is going to be interesting to see whether sit to pass can overcome it. I think actually on one of those ones on clay. I think he's got so much more time to return the serve and he can step back and take some swings. Maybe that actually does help him against the door. But i completely agree with what you said. Catherine he just didn't didn't get near serve really for the whole match other than a fifteen minute spell which was weird and bizarre and suddenly he broke nidal twice twice in a row three times in a row. Maybe it was a very strange portion of the match. But i guess my main takeaway was kind of comparing to team the dull because that was the match we saw most recently and it felt like team has sustained threat against nadal whereas sits pass to me felt like he was relying on little moments and flashes of when his game was on and hoping that that would be enough to get him through. I didn't i didn't see a complete game plan really from him. And i think feeds into this wider thing of him being a bit confused about how to play a dollar and therefore it just always felt to me like the dole would win that match and in the end he won that third-set pretty pretty comfortably after after a shaky start

The greatness of Rafael Nadal

"We talk about tennis. She was about this final and put it on pitting off having to actually summer. The achievement of rough on the dull winning thirteen, French Open, and winning this French. Open in particular and doing it in the way that he did because. It. So astonishing I'm struggling to process. Frankly, yes. Apologies in advance for hyperbole and use of superlatives, but if you can't use them now when rough on the is now hundred and two girls and has won his thirteenth title when when can use MS utter the extraordinary? What is the chief today, and of course, this is an achievement that is actually fifteen sixteen years in the making it is it is unbelievable. Walk Needle is able to do both in tennis number one, but also just at this tournament, one of his best ever career performances David today. I would say so this was Up there with what he did to federal in two, thousand eight when federal and a handful of games arguably even better I think because federal struggled that day I think the conditions were less suited to today on paper at least I would have thought compared to a high bouncing day in June, and of course, he's you know he's twelve years older I mean, let's not forget. He's thirty four that's that shouldn't be. Put. To one side because you know he's got a lot of miles in those legs lot of kilometers and it's it's just mind boggling that he can physically do it for star I think it bore a lot of similarities to what Jackovitch did to him in the Australian Open file of twenty months ago, which was Jock itch referenced in Oh Sorry Nadal referenced in his post match comments it had that same feel inasmuch as when we were discussing this yesterday and we were building up to it all week long the one eventuality are could not see is one of these destroying the other one that's just could not see I mean, which is again just another example of how good predictions I am. But it was. A performance that I wasn't expecting of that level and that that feels unfetter I found the down after what he's done over the last twelve years but. He lifted himself to a level. We certainly haven't seen at this tournament. And it was this fortnight anyway it wasn't. It wasn't just. Fortunate needlework open happen to be having Berlin day today is it wasn't just what one of these things the way the cookie crumbles he change things in his approach today he was an I believe the stats ended up bearing this out in terms of name body was quitting. On your coverage David about the net clearance on his kind being significantly. Lower today than in previous matches indicating how much more aggressive he was being on that I mean I think on both wings in particular on that on that can side he was. Firmly the aggressor out there in an joke which was on the back foot right from the word go and. He looked. Bewildered by the level throughout, imagine, imagine playing really good tennis and being the world number one. And having lost six love. I just can't I can't imagine how awful that feels. You know I texted you guys. At the end of that first set and I said. Other than serving a bit better. I. Don't know what he can do. I don't think it's a question of just raise the level a bit and that'll be okay. What can he possibly do? Yeah and he's been in his press conference Djokovic and use the word surprised by Nidal's level. I don't think he sold this coming from the doll based on what we've seen from the doll these two weeks. Yes. Nidal's been great. He's the final without dropping a set, but it's clearly not been absolutely top top level in the dull and I'm not sure your conviction was expecting the performance that we saw from the Dell today he was caught off Guard surprise bewildered and that that. is so much credit. As you said to walk in the door was doing he was the aggressor. He was taking every opportunity to hit his forehand down the line and standing up on the baseline and kind of taking the drop shot away from Jackovitch. I'm sure we'll talk more about that but just little subtle changes in his game that he made the just made this huge overall difference and with the intent that he paid with it was it was overwhelming for Novak Djokovic Channon. was kind of reminded of a little quote I read from turning adult recently who often the Schwartzman team match said a lot of people compare team to my nephew. But I, don't think that's a fair comparison. This was in Spanish. This was in the Spanish newspaper El Pice and he was saying that team is a great player, but he doesn't have the options in his game that Nadal has and. The different ways to be able to beat you I. Think this goes back to what we were talking about on a podcast recently when David you said the fact that these players are always adding things today game, the dull Djokovic and Federer, and the Dallas got so many different ways he can beat you. He can change what he does and he did that today and I think it surprised Yovich and It shouldn't be surprising to me, but at the end to us, but it kind of was surprising to see the dull change tactically against your that that rivalry has been so familiar in my head of what that looks like in terms of the patterns of the rallies and this one was different out there nobles the those tactical awareness today was was as good as anything I've ever seen from him. I think

"I'M ALMOST THERE CAN BE A. A third I've just called the name of mine wrong. What was it called ready What's his real name? I'm on my second bid David. Leads you've just opened third Tonia. Catherine. It's an Aq-. It's an Eq-. Right okay. So. Yeah. I'm drinking San Miguel apparently others call semi Guel. Not to worry about three of them. We've just watched the men's singles final. It is the sort of final that makes me feel like I've had about five days. Even if I haven't because it's. A meandering delirious. I don't really know how to sum it up. It was just but. Yeah I'm slightly worried that the match is just a big blur in my mind and I'm going to struggle to talk about what actually happened. I can remember very strongly the feeling of it happening and how I felt watching it. I think that will be etched into my mind forever because it was one of those matches by the end I was just so an egg tense for both players A. But trying to rationalize what happened might be quite a difficult task I think. Is a bit light last year's final when ref on the Dow lead two sets to love and a break. And that looked over and then suddenly it was in a fifth set is it bit lineup? No. I didn't think. It was follow quality I would say. I thought I thought. was really good like the whole time. This one was patchy. But the idea of it being not that interesting because looking like going to be a straight sets win. And then suddenly you don't want the match to end and you wanted to go on forever in that sense, it was similar. But I don't think quality-wise or. Sort of the reasons for why ended up being such a dramatic match were that similar tall I also think that Medvedev's comeback last year was completely unexpected I think again somebody like. Nidal or not somebody like against Nidal, if love down in your first Grand Slam final. Very few people are predicting away back I think even at sets breakdown today. People will. I think most people watching. Were waiting dominate team to wake up and. Waiting for something that felt like, surely, it has to happen surely at some stage today even if it's only. A small research and see and I am a break back pushing the set to a tiebreak. Winning a set. People were waiting to see the real. Dominic team. It felt. It felt like only a matter of time whether he could get it together. In time. Before it was either. But for me, that was quite crucial difference in how this one felt. Lost felt I will remember this match I think in the long run for the final set and for the final set tiebreak but. You can't have that without the other stuff that comes before just two guys. So, let's talk about that talk about the start of the match. And how we it was. It was weird. It was I mean festival Amazon deserve. Totally, different men to the guy who came out against public arena buster looked. Just, totally paralyzed with nerves and unable to play his normal game. He looked free now there for those first two sets, he looked languid he has. He has a languid power. Unlike, anybody else I think when you he said of generates speed of shot whether it's the serve of one hundred and seventy seven miles now or four hundred. That's kind of hit the back fence without you realizing he's actually hit it that hard. I don't think anybody else gives me that. kind of feeling out on the circuit of the moment you can. I can feel the power of everybody else is almost a slight of hand the way he does it, but he was timing the ball way way better and also the intent was there and he was coming into the net I mean the statistics on his net approaches. I think after a sense set in half to gone to the net twenty times. And with some success, he looks uncomfortable at the net, but he was just playing. The odd. So masters using his six foot six inches his wingspan. Great. Get into the net. And Dominic team was absolutely awful.

Tennis adapting to the new normal: French Open 'unilateral' September Switch; 'Flushing-Garros' slams back-to-back?; Laver Cup & ATP/WTA responses analysed; 'Excusez-moi?' Players find out on social media; Tips for fans to cope with no tennis

"Everyone and welcome to the passing Shaw. The tennis poke caused by fans four fans with your host Jolan Kim. Today on the show. We're going to be bringing you up to speed on all the latest developments of the corona virus hit tennis season including the French controversial date change the ATP and WBZ's movement to a collective approach decision making and how players are keeping on their training routines in home. Kim I find this all very surreal. It could have been Indian Wells. Men's Fund will stay. We could have been previewing the AP we could have been. Who knows. Maybe looking forward to Andy Murray in back onto a tennis court but unfortunately sadly all that is on hold seemingly indefinitely a you you in high spirits. Nassir to Joe. I mean I've just it just keeps getting from bad worse doesn't There is just as old ask for control. We company do anything we have to sort of hate for the best and I mean there are things we can do. We can follow advice and stay inside of course but yeah. I would give anything right now just to have. Tennis is a poker it like whoever it is I will. I will accept the crappiest final in Tennessee straight. Means we have lives for again right. I find it quite funny. Actually because even though we no life tennis to kind of talk over there still seems to be actually more tennis news to actually To actually catch up because you know we still had a lot of information. Come at us from the tennis world. some some more surprising than others. And obviously we'll get onto that. Let's just give our listeners on ourselves. Actually a pair of the of the lay of the landscape at the moment the Toys R. Off Indefinitely Think. Officially at the moment they've been suspended to the seventh of June which is basically ruled out. Oh Clay Court tennis. So we've had all the tournaments in Madrid Rome Strasbourg Rats Munich astro Geneva Leon who whites from the calendar ranking points have been frozen as well so yeah we've got no. I got life headed to come to full with T. But when this was kind of announced I think the big the big talker boy it just the state the announcement was the that the ATP at W. Ta said now is the time to act unilaterally. Kim But in unison. Yeah so I mean they overeat out what they said. And I'll see if our listeners can notice what's missing so auden all decisions related to the impact of the creative. Irs Require Consultation and review with the stakeholders in the game view that is shared by ATP WPA the ANC tennis Australia and the USDA. So Joe. What's missing from US announcement. I think that I think maybe the French tennis federation a missing. I I have no idea why that is the case. They could have been because they went compete. Ray who can just reschedule tournament at the top of a heart without telling anyone our consulting anyone involved in which is going to be a might have something to do with it. I think I've eaten. What bold move. I mean understand that they obviously won't let on to happen at some point and is obviously wasn't going to really happen you know saying it's the it's the next. Grand Slam in the calendar but the decision they took was just so so rash and they've moved to the most awkward position arguably in the calendar. You know just all for the USA. But I think there's about six days in between the end of the US Open. Stop the French Open. This is all hypothetical oversee. None of this may happen and from what I've read from some circles. It's unlikely that we'll probably have any tennis the rest of the year. I don't know I mean. I'm hoping that's not the case. Obviously but all of the kind of ramifications. Ooh Who's GonNa play what what's going to happen like might be null and void because they might white everything a. Let's let's say hypothetically that it does. Let's say the French will go ahead in September? I think the dates they have said at the moment it will take place is September twentieth to the Fourth of October. First of all clay-court Teddy's at that time. That's not going to be fun is it? Yeah it's going to be very cold. I mean even wrote on Garza's on end of May beginning of genie's they can have some terrible weather and to be fed they do have the reef but also there wouldn't be any legal tournaments in in-involved say people would be coming in like fresh off the hard courts Without any practice unless they choose to focus just on the clay and took themselves off to some challenger events or futures the because I think those things they could probably arrange you know in advance kind of place at the time to kind of set them out for like practice. I think they're easier to kind of just put on a shorter natives. But it's just yeah. I mean what you do for example if you're if you're a rapper. He's defending the US. Open defending the French shape in this year. Does he just play both and hope he can defend both? Does he pick one over the other. It's just the strangest decision and we've never seen this happened before but it's is just I mean. Would that be the most remarkable achievement if someone one base of as black tobacco? We've talked about someone winning the French Open and Wimbledon boxy. There's still a gap of several weeks between those two but and that's obviously not being done an awful lot so this would be some fate if it was a chief. Yeah I mean certainly. I think it's still by the the PA. The calendar is obese. Like a back to back grand slams. We've got the sunshine double. It did well by. Abby is you've got the I coined it on twitter at the the flushing guerrillas days It's certainly that that would be a challenge for I mean for a lot of players especially for someone like Nidal. He is the defending champion in both of them. Both events would be taken enormous toll on the body. And you know we've seen you know the big three that approach to the season to take kind of a stripped back approach pick and choose events and it does it does bring up the question of you know if that does go ahead and you have back to back Grand Slams. Is it possible to debate for which you have to watch? You have to be really refocused and just say I'm going to do one or the other and you think that potentially from the Dow I would just focus on on the French Open as it would pay me to say given defended the US Open champion. Ba Yeah it feels like just focus on on one. I mean he would be the history again at the friendship going. Thirteen to add. It would be great if he could win at different times of the year when the conditions that may be different because that would just I guess ultimately proved that Hey I am totally trae anytime of the year. I will be there at the top so you'd have to think he would go for the French over the US. But I mean another thing. Is that depending on. When or if the season comes back like players will have had a long spell of time. You know in competition say they might be much fresher healthier and injury free so it might not matter too much in terms of the toll on their bodies as if this is happening at the end of animals is not that we would see this kind of contrast normally it might be the impact might be lessened somewhat because of that. But I mean who say. We haven't mentioned that it will say clashes with the Labor cop which is technically an exhibition right. It's not like a proper event but basically all the top names you know have signed up and committed to playing and all the tickets have been sold. Yeah sold out. It's being held in Boston. Which is I guess. A logical place to for them to get off the Apron said exhibition senior team world. Lovely what will I mean tires on surely going to pick that over the friendship? And but it's

"I'm guessing you've heard of the Kentucky Derby Abi to this race that's run usually early in May we haven't yet talked about the Kentucky Derby this year but that's about to change as we're finally starting to get into rounds of prep races that will winnow the field down to twenty for the run for the roses on May the second so to help us do that. We bring in voice. We haven't heard on this show for too long and and that's Jonathan Listener who writes for horse racing nation. Welcome back Jonathan. So before we get into a few specific horses. WHO's impressed you the most so far on the triple triple crown trail? I think Dennis moment to start the list. Dentists moment strikes to lead right at the top of the stretch at Delta. Two lanes lead our three lately for the final final furlong. Dennis this moment with five length lead scabbard with clear sailing up the second but Dennis moment kicks off the road at the Kentucky Derby in a big way. He barely moved a muscle. That we we have it. RESTRAINING NATION DOT COM user generated Kentucky Derby contender rankings and despite his trouble that experience career dentist moment has not left that number. One spot. You talking about a grade three winner. Who was going to be the favourite the Breeders Cup Juvenile L. Stumbles out of the gate? You know he could be undefeated if you look back at his debut he lost his jockey was really no fault zone so he has the two losses and between between them. He's sandwich to really really nice. Looking victories including his debut at Ellis Park they won by like nineteen and a quarter lengths. I think it was so there's a lot of potential there and he's one that I feel like every once in a while you hear about a derby prospect before they make their debut and then we kind of latch onto them I wanna say it was probably roadster roadster last year because Baffert said he could be his next justify American Farrow and obviously it didn't work out there but they'll Romans has talked up Dennis's moment since before he he ran a race. And so we're we're kind of going to the same thing here As far as a couple of other runners eight rings also out of the Breeder's cup juvenile. He's a really interesting. One didn't really run his race. You know the last time we saw him but I think the way he's going to be handled this season. You have to keep paying attention trained by Bob Baffert. He's he's GonNa run him in the rebel at Oaklawn. And then the Arkansas Derby potentially there as well and then another one that you know kind of on the fence about that you know. He's got a lot of towns. Is Max `field scratched from the Breeders Cup Juvenile. He had a little bit of an issue. There it turns out we found out a couple of weeks after that that he had had a minor surgery for a bone chip. But he's not even in serious training now. Well he's he's he's apparently galloping No works yet and so I think they'll have to do the to A. Ah kind of schedule where you hope to get race out of them and then you have a more serious race which I would expect to be something like the blue grass stakes if everything works out well and he's undeniable town. I'm and I think he's GonNa win a major race somewhere down the road. I don't know if it's going to be the Kentucky Derby and then the other one I feel like it's gotten all the conversation is independence hall at at Independence Hall now makes his move. Independence Hall is the leader getting away to lead by two prints of Pharaohs has moved up on the outside. It's Bourbon Bay Independence All L. linked and a half as they come for the quarto prints of Pharaohs on the outside Bourbon Bay. It is independence hall with the lead and now a furlong to the finish Jose Ortiz showing them the whip now goes to work on independence hall. WHO has a three likely? Just a sixteen to the finish at. It's the constitution called Independence Hall. Tailwind Jerome by four Knights won the national stakes by open links came back and won the jerome. It was a little more workmanlike. But he's going to go. Oh into the new year here as another one of the favorites and if I could talk about one more that has sort of attracted my attention a little bit. It's this ancient warrior horse. I don't know what his path is going to look like. He's Jerry Hall android or for trainee. And if you follow racing at all the last year or so. You'll know that. He's SORTA become embattled. Dan from the strike. Group's tracks out in California But I of all these horses that have won maiden races and we'll be going to the stakes. I want to watch that one closely. He's moved him over to Oakland Park. We should see him in an allowance. Race coming up at the beginning of February and then from then on he should be on the Derby trail else. That's one that that I definitely want to see more of well. You mentioned Bob Baffert. And it's tough to talk about the Kentucky Derby Trail Without Bob Baffert and he has a lot more than the one you mentioned. There's thousand words who ran a big race in the low sal futurity. I'm a Roger Federer Fan but you have to give it up for an doll who is also ambassador trainee. Who looked really really good? So I mean you know Bob Baffert certainly knows how to get horses to the Derby mean how many of these prospects aspects of pan out. I see a path for all of them. To be honest. You know and we also have mentioned authentic. It's still authentic coming to the three the eight ball. He's been in control throughout leads by a length and a half to uncaptured hero. It's all authentic as they pass the quarter pole and turned for home authentic and complete Khaliq Command turning it on. He's in front by sex with a furlong left to go. Zimba Warrior and Assault Coast as authentic is putting on a show. Here is a little green gene shifting about but long gone authentic strolls home in the sham. He'll win by about eight lakes green. It's Grafton stretch and just kept going there and another extremely impressive Horse Nidal I. I wonder about him a little bit. You know we've only seen him one time on Sunday and that six and a half for a long race he he looks like Dortmund Ortmann if you go back to two thousand fifteen big horse. That wasn't extremely fast out of the gate but once he got into stride he went straight to the pace and never really let up there. Yeah it's not not really the kind of horse you want to win the Derby but I think you could get to the Derby and then thousand words certainly has every reason to move forward his last race. I think they had probably a little bit the too much blinker on him and he ended up going head to head with that no door that ran in the Breeders Cup juvenile second. I think it's SORTA legitimize both of those horses that they ran so closely in the future. But I think thousand words is probably at least a couple of lengths better then a no door. He just probably didn't see him in the stretch until Flavian Kinda guided him out and it's like Oh with the blinker. The horse realized he had something to run against a win on. So I guess when you talk about horses that I'm looking at in the new year. Thousand Words is definitely on that shortlist list to Jonathan Listener of racing. Nation is with us here on the gate. We've talked a little bit about the Breeders Cup juvenile which was a topsy turvy race. You had three big horses that we've mentioned into all had their problems that day. We haven't talked about the horse. Who Wanted Storm the court for trainer Peter Martin and that would be a very popular win in the racing business? As you know what chance do you give storm the court to back up what he did in the juvenile. Oh probably not much not a lot of black type in the family. I'm not sure if there's any black type from Stanley I'd agree wise. And then you know he was obviously the beneficiary of other horses stumbles in that race You Know He. He goes gate to wire was not really pressed a whole lot and at the same time. I think they took the blinker. They put their blinkers on. I'm sorry and I have not a fan of lemon. That put blinkers was on a horse at that point in their career. I feel like you should be taken them off so that they can relax. Prepare to go a little bit longer. I think that race and the circumstances just all all came together for storm the court and allowed him to upset that race. It's forty five to one. Whatever he ended up that day I'm sort of in agreement? I think with everybody else that the the the better Derby Derby prospect was no door and second in that race going forward. I want to mention because these races have just happened. Enforceable label for Mark Cassie. Who is not missed? A beat after a son norm went out on his own. He had been his father's chief assistant and enforceable. Really good winning the Lecomte. But we haven't seen too many Lecompte winners. Go on to run well in the Kentucky Derby. Where do you put me as a tap it colt out of a dixie union in marriage? The breeding is good. I put him a really high on my list. As far as forces will be in the Derby but I would not put him on my list of forces that I think can win the Derby and I say that because of his running style you know if we go back to almost every year that the point system has been effect and obviously gets rid of those pure your sprinters. It's the horses that can put themselves near the front at the beginning of the race and keep that pace up and never be caught by closers that tend to win the Derby enforceable enforceable is one of those closers. It's inevitable that he's GONNA run into traffic problem you know. I almost hope he sneaks into the Derby and everybody overlooks. Because I feel like he's the kind of horse could come into the super factor. That's probably going to be a really common line of thought. Though I mean I'm thinking a few months out but the soup perfect You know in the era of a favorites winning the Derby is as remain because it's pretty high minimum of really profitable wager for people nonetheless so yeah for me. He's a super effective player. I I I think he's GonNa be okay as the distance is longer obviously is a full brother Mohammed and a half years day. "Sports betting as Kenny learn the hardway is about out having as much information as possible before you bet or having friends who will share information with you go on so tennis sports bettors unlike Kenny. We have found this way to maximize the information they get do under the secret y-yeah you physically go to the match. Oh like be there live in person right right because if you're at home watching on TV there's a delay wait for like the umpire to press the button to get the score in but if you were there live you know before everybody else and so gamblers actually hire people to go to matches. They're called court ciders and I heard about them from this tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg. If you're courtside or you go to a tennis match you sit sit there and you push a button each time so I went to the point. If player a wins the point you press one button to player. B wins the point. You press another button. So are you telling me that it is somebody's job job to fly around the world and watch tennis matches and unlike press a button on their phone. That's a that is a job. Somebody could have right. You're in Monaco one week here in Madrid the next week come moths or what are we doing. Radio Okay so ben says there is a downside to this job. which is that tennis officials? Do not like anything that has to do with gambling. Is it feel icky as they make this kind of slippery slope argument where today maybe you're just sending scores tomorrow. Maybe you're like offering a player a bribe to take take a dive why that seems like quite a quite a slope but okay so what is developed is this kind of cat and mouse game right on one side. You've got the court. CIDERS sitting in the stands ends drying to send their updates on the other side. You've got the the officials from the tennis tournament trying to stop them. So at any given tournament match there will be people who are called spotters who are surveying the crowd walking around taking looks looking at their book of faces that people thin apprehended or who are known court ciders and matching people up so ben was at this tournament in Charleston and he actually saw one of these court ciders getting taken out by the security guard though and they sort of pinned him to the ground and I noticed that he had a wig wig that had fallen off his wig. We're kind of a WIG. was that was like a long hair. He said it was just like some cheap halloween week. It was obviously like Lens. It came off CERTA. The JIG was up ten system odd characters but even by those standards that was that was pretty strange. What is interesting to me about. What's going on. Here used to be the way you made money. If you're a tennis association was you sold Broadcasting Rights Yeah but then a few years ago they figured out hey we can sell the score the data rate we can sell forty fifteen forty thirty deuce right. We can sell that on to gambling websites to news sites okay A. and if I'm running a gambling website I'm obligated to do that otherwise my thing isn't going to work exactly but the court siders then are in direct competition with that stream of data there pirating the data the tennis organization would argue right then. It's a strange thing from a more free speech point of view honestly and here's a legal question. I mean I'm at a match and talking to you on the foam at the match and say Hey Nidal's up to one in the first set. I can't imagine that I'm breaking any rule by doing that. But the tennis this data rights police would say that you were in fact they say it right on the ticket if you go to the US Open the fine print on your ticket said something about how you are not allowed to transmit information for gambling purposes if they catch you court citing they kick you out. If you come back they will charge you with trespassing. His name is a casino that kicks people after counting cards. Counting Card is not against the law but it is against the House rules the Casino and tennis tournaments have that same kind of casino ethos that's when it comes to court

Daniil Medvedev claims first Masters title in Cincinatti

"The world's best men's tennis player at least at this moment is deal medvedev going into last week. The twenty-three-year-old russian had made two consecutive tournament finals here in washington d._c. And then in montreal then this past week in cincinnati he we used huge first and second serves and really solid for hands back ends to beat world number-one electric in the semi finals and divvied viewed goffin in the final to win the biggest title of his career and move up to a career-high number five in the world behind only jovic rafael nidal roger federer and dominic team stephens hero. The eighth ranked stefanos citybus. Thank you is owen foreign his career against gets medvedev seats apostol ben rothenberg last week than medvedev plays sloppy adding. It's good sloppy. He can make you miss without your understanding how you just missed you. Miss shots that you don't mess. That's deep kind of. I watched medvedev in d._c. So i have a good sense of how well the dude is playing but i it didn't know before i saw a pretty oblique tweet on sunday. Is that three years ago medvedev was defaulted from a match on the second tier challenger tour. You're in a match which was played on clay and savannah georgia medvedev. Who was then ranked number. Two hundred sixty in the world was playing donald young young as a black american can player in the first at the chair umpire. A black woman in sandy franch went down to the court to check the ball mark on shot medvedev hit. There was close to the sideline. She called the ball out giving young the point which led medvedev mark. I know that you are friends. I am sure about it. After the game was over french called over tournament supervisor advisor medvedev was quickly defaulted for what the united states tennis association later referred to as questioning the impartiality of the umpire based on her race. There is unfortunately precedent for that incident in two thousand one. Australian lleyton hewitt claimed that a black line judge at the u._s. Open was calling foot-faults on him to to favor hewitt's black opponent american james blake. I've only been foot-faulted of one end. Look at him. Look at him. Look at him. Mate hugh had said look at him. I and you will tell me what the similarity is. Get him off. The court. Look at what he's done. Hewitt was not penalized during a match or afterwards the u._s. Us open tournament director brian earley who you may remember as the guy who came on the court during last year's yes open final when serena williams demanded to speak to the terminent director during her her conflict with chair umpire carlos ramos early ruled that there was no violation of quote grand slam code of conduct and that quote the evidence events was inconclusive as to the intent of mr hewitt's remarks to the chair umpire q._a. for his part said i come from a multicultural country. I'm not racial any way at all. Though hewitt didn't get sanctioned. John mcenroe called his on-court statement unforgivable. It has indeed followed hewitt for his whole career areo still hear people mention it when hewitt's name comes up medvedev's words have gotten less attention because they came in a minor league event probably also because he wasn't yet well known when it happened as far as i know medvedev has never commented on this <hes> the incident did get brought up in two thousand seventeen when at wimbledon medvedev eh opened his wallet and started throwing coins at the base of the umpire's chair to make a not so subtle point about the empires bias alleged bias towards his opponent it

Different standards for women and men in tennis?

"And this we didn't get a chance or I didn't get a chance to talk about this. Serena Williams things that Serena Williams thing that happened over the weekend. The outburst at the US open, and it is driving me nuts. People on social media driving. The absolutely crazy. What has transpired at the US open. Okay. So if you weren't watching, and you don't know what happened? And. Yeah. By by the way, just to clarify we have coach Tony Sanchez coming up at six thirty by the way, six thirty. Tony Sanchez leading producer now. Now, we're not calling Tony now. So Serena Williams got three penalties. And I'm going to go over this in a second. But we have everyone on MSNBC and CNN calling racism and feminism, and it is driving me through a wall. Okay. One woman. Her name is Alina Maxwell. And she's she does show on Sirius XM, and she's been all over the TV. She says that black women have a right to be angry at how the world mistreats and dehumanizes us that has absolutely positively nothing to do with what happened to Serena Williams at the US open. I'll explain that in a second. But let me go on with this clown who was on MSNBC yesterday. She goes on to say as a black woman, if I speak up to lobby I know, I'll be perceived as hysterical or aggressive, the stereotype of the angry black woman and she's making. I'm sure that happens in other everyday life. But this has nothing to do with Serena Williams and her whole piece is about Serena Williams. Serena went on to say, this has happened to me too many times, you know, how many times men do much worse than I did. Well, Serena did threaten somebody's life linesman at the US open several years back. So Serena has a history. Let me tell you something for people that haven't done any homework has clearly this moron that was on NBC yesterday. And some of these other networks people calling racism and feminism what? Serena Williams, did let me let me just educate some of these idiots who know nothing nothing about what they're talking about. They want to make this a race issue. Okay. This unpire Ramos. He's given the same type penalties to Rothley on the Dow and Novak Djokovic in the last couple of years, in fact, Nidal about this unpire, I believe he said, quote, he is a stickler for the rules. So Serena should know that this guy has a history of being a stickler of the roles now, let's break this down real quick. And I'd love somebody to call up and call me a racist. Please do I would love to debate you on this because anyone who's speaking out about Serena acting like a buffoon. People are calling them racist number to call to five seven five three nine six the first penalty that Serena Williams got over the weekend. Was coaching her coach was giving her hand signals whether she was watching it or whether she used that is not that's not the point. The point is is that if you are coaching it is a penalty. And if you wanna make the argument that they're not consistent with it. Then blame the other empires. But this guy is consistent with it. That's all that matters. So that was the first warning. Okay. Then Serena got a point penalty for breaking her racket. A clearly clearly breaking the rules. You're not allowed to do that. So they take a point away from her. And then she calls this guy Rommel's Aligarh, and then she makes it personal with him. I thought he was going to give her another penalty right there game penalty. Then she calls him a thief. So what does he do? He does exactly the appropriate thing that you are supposed to do take some other penalty from her and that is a game. And then everyone is up in arms, and she starts crying and cotton puts up a temper tantrum, but an eight year old wouldn't even put up and then people are saying that it had to do with her race. Or it was sexism, look if you wanna make the argument that the rules should change. If you wanna make the argument that coaching should be allowed. I don't have a problem with that. But guess what the rules are in place. Now, if you wanna make the argument that you should be allowed to break your racket in the game and not get a penalty for that. I wouldn't have a problem with that. But the rules are set in place for a reason. And after she got a warning she clearly should have been able to control her emotions she wasn't able to do that. And that's the difference between what they're talking about with some of these men, and what she did what most of these men when they get a penalty they stop. She was unable to stop. And then after it drives me nuts in her press conference. And never my out about tennis J D as I am about this issue as you can tell we don't do a lot of tennis on the show. But this drives me nuts when people play the race card because she was a woman it had absolutely nothing to do with that in the press conference. Serena said, well, I'm standing up for women's rights. And I'm I'm standing up, she took no responsibility for anything. She did. It was deplorable. It was disgusting. And I would love to talk to anybody out there that disagrees with me anybody out there that think this umpire Ramos did anything wrong anybody out there thinks this was sexism anybody out there who thinks that Rama's did this because she is an African American woman. I would love to hear from you or people that agree with me as well. But you know, I there were a few people on national TV Stephen a Smith being one of them who I usually disagree with ninety nine percent of the time. But he was on my side on this one. "When we first joined CBS sports radio, and you still have questions questions for you, though. Not the same kind of questions. I was telling you about an hour ago that my new favorite athlete. Follow on social media is Phil Mickelson. He literally just joined Twitter two weeks ago. And he's hysterical. He posts all kinds of cell fees and videos, that's what he does. And he's a goof. Football, which you may know, if you followed him over the course of his career, he generally wears that same Smirke grin on his face all the time, and he's pretty comfortable in his own skin, and he'll make fun of himself. His latest tweet was a picture. I mean, he looks like he's trying to imitate. A biker who's very patriotic. He's riding his Harley to the Ryder Cup. If you could it's in Paris. So I guess he can't. But he's so funny. And I'm glad that we have him on Twitter because he makes me laugh every time he tweets, and he's big into it. He tweets all the time. He tweets before practice rounds and before he goes out and compete, and then he'll post videos of all kinds. You know? I just think it's a lot of fun. It's refreshing when someone new discovers social media, and does it take himself or herself too seriously? Who is your favorite athlete? Follow on. Social media doesn't have to be Twitter. It can be Facebook. It can be Instagram. It can be Snapchat because there are some athletes who also use Snapchat to keep up with their fans and their followers. So who's your favorite athlete? Follow on social media, specifically athletes here, and I don't care if it's a retired athlete anyone who's played a professional sport. That's what I'm looking for. So either on my Twitter a law radio or on our Facebook page after hours with Amy Lawrence. If you went to bed enough early enough that you were going to get seven or eight hours of sleep and still be up for work at this hour, will then you missed a lot when you went to bed Raphael doll was still on the court probably was early in his match against Dominic team and they played into a tie-break in the fifth set. It was tense. It was dramatic and Rafia Rafael Nidal survived. He did. But it was a tie. Break that went back and forth back and forth against team. It was a really compelling match on back to back nights. We've had Roger Federer and Rafael doll engaged in some very dramatic tiebreaks to determine their fate Rafa is the defending champ at the US open. He has advanced to the semifinals. And then we had the defending champ on the women's side loose Sloan Stevens out already, but Serena Williams has vanished. And so you still have some of the big names not all of them. But some of the big names like Novak Djokovic Rafa and Serena who are still alive. What are the things that I've noticed about this particular US open, and I get all the media alerts because I do have a credential for the open they have set attendance records on three separate days during the course of this particular US open. We're we're talking about crowds of over seventy thousand one day seventy thousand people going through the gate at Flushing Meadow to attend one day. Day of the US open. So was a couple of different sessions. It's day and night sessions. Although I think they're about to be done with that now. And so it's really popular despite the heat, and there have been heat indices and heat warnings well up over a hundred when you consider the humidity there actually, instituted extra breaks for the athletes during the during the course of their matches. If they go four sets in the case of the men, they allow them to take an extra break because it's been such extreme heat and humidity, and yet still there are thousands and thousands of people tuning out in droves. And so that's that's one thing that you may have missed the last couple of nights is these two matches with Roger Federer getting upset and then Ross dolls surviving and advancing in the wee hours his match literally his match point that he converted to advance happened. Right. As we took the airwaves three hours ago. So. It's the capacity talk more for people who live on Pacific time for sure. What does this say my, computer? The capacity of the stadium was twenty three thousand. So Arthur ash stadium. Yes. Okay. Right. But but my point is that there are seventy thousand people going through the gate. So there are other stadiums there besides Arthur ash, and there are day sessions, and there are nights sessions and people will show up, and they'll watch practices or their watch doubles or the watch the action on the other courts. They have girls and boys tournaments that are taking place. So it's not just the matches that are taking place on Arthur ash stadium court so yes three consecutive days. But three days over the course of the first week and a half of the US open. They've set attendance records, meaning the number of people through the gate. There are now up over seventy thousand on one day and over Labor Day weekend, which included their military appreciation day, they had more than two hundred thousand fans over the course of Labor Day weekend. So tennis has been really good is the last major of the year in golf. There's also a lot of people that are really interested in what happens this month. And that's because the Ryder Cup is the last event coming up this month in Paris, France. And we now know that there will be the. The old guard represented because both Tiger Woods, and Phil Mickelson have been anointed. As members of the Ryder Cup team for Phil as I was just talking about. Posted the picture of him as a biker a Harley biker with the American flag theme, he's been all in on. How important it was for him to extend his streak? So he's been on every Ryder Cup teams nineteen ninety-five. But he indicated even before Jim furic made his picks that this particular Ryder Cup was one that would be more significant for him. Because of the fact that it's in Paris, and he so desperately wants to be part of a US team that wins on European soil. And so he had had kind of gone on on a mini campaign to tout himself the way that he's putting which I found somewhat humorous considering what did he make headlines for the US open because he putted badly on the tenth. All remember. He hit a moving putt. He got so frustrated that he went around the ball was going down the hill. And he smokes it back up the hill before it stopped moving. Yeah. He's putting so well that share except that what do we know about him the highlight of the year for Phil Mickelson is the fact that he hit a moving of the US open because he got frustrated, but it's Phil Mickelson. It's Tiger Woods. Who hasn't been on a Ryder Cup team as a player in six years going back to two thousand twelve and then Bryson d Shambo who earned his way onto this team? With back to back wins to start the FedEx Cup playoffs. And so you would think that Jim uric has got a big grin on his face after making three of his four captain's picks we talked about all year, we were looking for a number of different things, but players that had a good body of work that he played good the season players that were in good form. You know, we're headed over to Europe we're heading over into. Foreign soil. It's going to be an interesting crowd. They're boisterous. I have a lot of respect for them. And we're looking for players that we thought would would handle that situation. Well, and it would thrive would love the challenge ahead of him. And I think these three players that's what we've done hasn't been part of the team playing wise for six years and served as vice captain a couple of years ago. And that was absent credible will be part of the team part of these young guys and to try to help help them. In any way, shape or form. I could whether it was with pairings spikes, or sandwiches, water, whatever they needed. I was there and this year to have the honor Bill play again as. Is beyond special. Everything means so much more to tiger now that he's had it taken away. And now that he's gone through a stretch when he wasn't sure he'd ever be able to play golf again so graduations to those threes. So even as football the juggernaut is about to return poised to return tomorrow night with the season opener the the Super Bowl champion almost at World Series the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles hosting the Atlanta Falcons, even as they get back on the field the big dogs the cash cow because that's what the NFL is. It's not going to be a one and done scenario. In fact, the NFL's not going to be able to hog the covers if you know what I mean, they're going to have to share with golf with tennis because there are a lot of great storylines and headlines coming from both of those sports NASCAR is going into its playoff as well. And then we can't forget about major league baseball this week right now we've got three theories that pit curried playoff teams against one. Another. And really because we're now into the final month with what twenty four ish games to go. Give or take a couple. You're talking about scoreboard watching to the max, which is so cool. So yes, we're psyched about football. We're gonna talk about some football coming up. You're welcome. But Roger Goodell and the NFL has to share some of the spotlight at least for now, and we're inside of a month until the puck drops on the NHL regular season. Not to mention the NBA with way, who's that guy who went to LA. I mean, I'm going to need some rosters to keep up with all the free agents. I feel like he's someone pretty special shoot our member is named one of these days. You know, I'm not so good with names in so October is the busiest month of the year in sports, but September is not far behind who is your favorite athlete. Follow on social media. We'll get to your calls to eight five five two one two four two two seven. It's after hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS sports radio. Stanford.

"To compromise on game day it's a win win the means game day will never be the same miller lite hold true so stephan and i talked to john wertheim last week before stephan went away to iceland and we talked about as you'll hear in my intro and a second documentary about rafael nidal and roger federer we had a huge amount of hubris and thinking oh there's nothing nothing could possibly happen fedor and a doll by the time we are this on monday july the ninth they'll both still be on the tournament and you know what nick hubris rewarded always be overconfident that's what that's what i have to tell you so the doll federer both made it to the wimbledon quarterfinals on monday they could meet and the final on sunday and here we go here's our conversation me and stephan and jon wertheim that was recorded last week as of july sixth two thousand eight roger federer and raphael and the doll had won fourteen of the previous sixteen major championships the two men had met in the previous four french open finals with an all winning all four and in the previous to wimbledon finals with federer winning both of those the match they'd played wimbledon that july which nidal one in five sets which aims the course of their rivalry and would instantly be celebrated as the greatest tennis match ever played that matches the subject of a new documentary strokes of genius which debuted last week on the tennis channel in which features interviews with the doll and federer plus their coaches and trainers and relatives and legends including john mcenroe bjorn borg martina navratilova and chris evert joining us now to discuss the documentary and the federal the doll rivalry which is now in its fifteenth year is jon wertheim john is an executive editor and senior writer at sports illustrated the author of the book strokes of genius and the executive producer of the documentary based on that book great to have you back my friends and it was a real pleasure to watch this documentary and to see athletes who are still you know at the top of their sport after all these years be so reflective during their careers i think the total credit to those guys and i think you're absolutely right we we all love thirty for thirty but there there's a big difference between athletes sort of playing retrospective and rehashing these these career moments versus athletes who are absolutely in the throes in this case of this rivalry i mean they come to wimbledon one and two in the world and they've won all alternately they've won the last six majors and they still agreed to to sit down and i thought both of them in in very different ways went pretty pretty deep on both match but i think more importantly on their relationship and the dynamics of rivalry and i think it says a great deal about them even at this stage in their careers they'd be willing to do this it is really striking and that was the first thing i was going to bring up to josh just how introspective and analytical both of them are about their place in the game and their relationship to each other other and i think my favorite recognition john was was federer's that after losing to nidal in this match ten years ago at wimbledon the realization that the doll was necessary to him as an athlete that he had been unbeatable that nidal came along with a game that challenged federer to adjust which he had never had to do before and federer like in real time understanding that and modifying his game so that we could have this fifteen year rivalry yeah exactly there's a great line in the movie where it was as if the doll were created for the express purpose of taking down fetter fashion a game that was more more unfavorable to federal who who had been ruling the route that had been this sort of benevolent despot at everybody loves roger and the the runner up would always say you know to good i'm playing for second place here comes the spaniard and he doesn't necessarily you know hugh to to the niceties of tennis and he's a lefthander tactically it's different sort of philosophically it's different and you're right i think better and he admits this in the film it took him a while to warm up to this relationship this is not somebody who necessarily relish the whole idea of challenge and rivalry and.

"This after hours with lawrence congratulations to roffe on the doll who just won his eleventh french open championship and once again very emotional trophy ceremony for rafa doesn't surprise me it never does surprise me one it's an older athlete and i know he's got a lot of success at the french open but an older athlete who has gone through injuries who's missed significant time an athlete who's come face to face with his sports mortality or we're just talking about sports here but the fact that rafael nidal knows this is not always going to be the case every one of these french opens now represents a major labor of love i like what lebron said earlier in the nba playoffs where he compared his thirty three year old body to his eighteen year old body and the fact that when he was first in the league as a rookie he barely iced he didn't have to worry about stretching this was a guy who could just say up all night bounce back and play another game the next day excuse me but that's a younger athlete older athletes come face to face with the fact that their bodies don't recover as well the workout hurt more injuries take longer to heal and so the suffering both mental and physical you become much more aware of it and you get to the point where the victories are that much sweeter and so i love that we could see that humanness with rafa he was obviously interviewed afterwards when the price at a chance to get him off the court covering that red clay of course and alone with his trophy to ask him a few questions and i as i say i appreciate the fact that there were tears and i also appreciate the fact that this french open championship like the warriors and the fact that this title was the toughest to obtain this may have been the most difficult road to get to his eleventh crowd at roland garros personally for me is amazing and very emotional came back from this almost five months without playing a full tournament scenes shangai first event officially van was in while the davis cup but miters and then montecarlo lot of moms with problems so coming back and have the tends to win in monte carlo barcelona bromont now especially here is it's very emotional for me on this was a very special moment and received.

"Two specific examples afford hood should shooting and i was involved in i was in the pentagon then involved investigation of it and then they boston marathon attack and in both cases inevitably the post event critiques are done and one of the conclusions that some on the hill thought is that we should have been more intrusive in the case of major nidal hasan emails so should have been breeding them more carefully and more closely and in the case of the boston marathon bombers we should have been tracking these brothers even though there was no real reason to do that so then we're supposed to be more intrusive but other times in the aftermath of edward snowden not so much so very mixed messages i think have been conveyed over over time to the intelligence along forcement communities i do wanna talk edward snowden in a second but is that kind of flexibility in your view a good thing for national security is good that we have the ability to move this target to debate over time or should we as a nation just answer the question torture yes or no enhanced interrogation nassar now i mean what what should we be doing i think the issue here is retroactively establishing a higher moral standard when people after the fact judge that something redoing is illegal immoral or on ethical i worry that in the future some somebody in the congress or some someone in the white house is gonna decide that killing people with drones is illegal immoral or unethical on.

"Chapelle nidal said she'd like to see mccaskill fight for reparations her constituents she said see mccaskill as similar to republicans why do they keep voting for them that's what i'd like to know seriously why do blacks keep voting for these democrats over and over and over and over and over and over again it's unbelievable you're going to get the same result when you keep voting for the same people senator jamila nasheed from saint louis said chapelle nidal wasn't titled to our opinion but she thought mccaskill have been fighting for black people's interests on issues like healthcare protection for veterans student loans i support senator mccaskill one hundred and fifty percents she said there you go there's that there's the democrat thing where they stick together no matter there it is you don't want anybody speak it out of turn and the democrat party reparations i mean how would you even how would you even begin to disperse distribute funds that you decided to to give you kind of only go that route if you were trying to collapse the nation kind of i think is kind of where that goes i mean where would they go to who would would these funds go who would receive them do you have to have i mean was it your direct relatives to all black people receive no matter where they're from even if they didn't have ancestors were slaves and who pays the reparations everybody or are are black people exempt from those tax dollars or they're not going to be taxed that way only white people pay the reparations and what if you're emigrated after slavery was legal which minded in mind as well so and they lived in montana where you know.

"Ahead of him what would what would the tennis fan wanna put djokovic ahead of nidal too i'm not i'm not versed in tennis enough to give you the clearcut answer there i know that on a sunday morning wear were still in the summer or their snow like football threegame on we're still early enough in baseball season where your team you'll watch their games but i doubt like the morning of you've got anything ritually going on with them nba finals in stanley cup final wrapping up us open next week that will give you some good that'll be alive sporting event in the morning or early afternoon that'll be worth watching i would i would i would say this even if i were doing this show today i would probably water watch some of the french open final because nidal what nidal us about to do i'm willing to convince myself or close to convinced i won't see something like this again so getting back to what i said earlier this hour the belmont stakes i've seen a triple crown winner now i appreciate horse racing but i love it there are certain things about it i don't care for it's not a sport to me that really grabs me outside of the cultural event that is the kentucky derby so when i put the belmont stakes on if i do it it's more because there's a either nothing else on on board or i bet on it like it's not because i'm super excited to watch it like i've been waiting all day for up in ninety nine percent of the time i would say that about a tennis sporting event to but this to me just seems this to be almost seems like it's under the radar today and it shouldn't be but we have somebody going for ten major championships in one major no one's even close to that in french open history so i'm already looking at some of my tweets on this on the doll from tennis fans not that there are many who i i'm looking at what amounts like four or five tweets on this i don't wanna make it sound like a there's an avalanche of comments that have come.
