The mission also hopes to raise awareness and funding for ST Jude's Cancer Center. I'm Scott Carr. You're listening to Bloomberg opinion on Bloomberg Radio. I'm Jim Brosseau Pandemic changed the way we work. And now it might be helping many change what they do. Work from home capabilities in a labor crunch have left workers with not only more jobs to choose from, but more power to choose how they do them. And, according to opinion columnist Counter Sand The window of opportunity is set to last at least for a little while longer. He joins us to explain Do you have any indication that people are reevaluating their careers right now? So we're seeing that in some of the data that people anecdotally and then also, people are quitting their jobs, and there's a lot of turnover companies, so it does suggest that something has changed since the pandemic. Now you mentioned fun Employment. I never heard that term. Tell us about that term. So I was in my late twenties after the 2000 and eight recession and a lot of my peers were getting laid off time and unemployment was kind of a cheeky way to talk about. You know, having lost your job and trying to make lemonade out of lemons, maybe bombing around a beach or just doing other things for a period of time. While the job market was so tough, So do you see echoes of that? Of the fun employment in what you're seeing today. There's a certain energy that's been unleashed in terms of, you know. The old structures don't seem to be working the way they used to be and whether it's work from home or pandemic or remote work. There's just a lot more options, and people are really sure whether the old structures that we had are going to work the way in the future they have in the past. And the people are being open minded about what that means for their careers. Now, workers, As you say, have a lot more options. Tell us about the number of options out there and why. Right. So we just got the jolts data, which is a survey looking at the number of job openings, hiring people quitting jobs. And that shows that the number of openings out there is the highest it's ever been, by quite a quite a degree or currently 11 million job openings in the U. S. And if your employee that means you have more options than you've ever had before, So what kind of options are you referring to there? Yes. So the 11 million sort of understates the number of choices people have, because not only are there quantitatively more choices than ever before a qualitatively there are as well because we've seen that. A lot of companies and finance and tax, particularly have moved jobs from New York and California to states like Texas and Nashville and places like that, and then other jobs are offering flexible remote structures or Or work from home, and so you can just pick from a lot more stuff than you ever have in the past, and so you don't have to be constrained and just take the first job available to you. But his experience still required in a lot of these jobs, or can you go from one career? Let's say you're in publishing and decide to, you know, be a tech worker. It probably depends on the career, you know? Certainly maybe if you want to switch from hospitality into something like retail, that's the kind of easy sweater or like a fulfillment center for Amazon. That might be the kind of thing where they're not looking for a whole lot of experience. When it comes to publishing or something more specialized white collar harder to say whether it's easier to switch from something like that. So now how long will this window of opportunity the open? Is it connected to Covid? There. Probably a few different angles here. The first is that you know the extent that officers are remaining open, and a lot of options have pushed the rib January. Nicolo pulling and pushing the spring to get past any kind of winter waves. That's sort of one window extent. Structurally remote work has changed the way companies are going to operate, and maybe some will be more impersonal and some will be more remote, but could be kind of sorting. Where if you prefer right work, you're going to leave. And that could take a few years to work out. And then there's also just how long the job market is tight and that's the function of the economic cycle. What policymakers choose to do whether to support the labor market or fight inflation. So I think there's a lot of angles here, but I would desperate least the next couple years..

"Need over winter time. And then when the days get Longer and they get more sunlight. Then they bounce back into into bloom. And that's what you're seeing right now. That's wonderful. What about bugs? Pests? The fortunate thing is, we have very few bugs and pests up here. You know, as the climate is changing a little bit, things are creeping closer. But the conditions here are generally speaking, very harsh. And so a lot of the things that are problematic in other plots of the country don't cause problems for us here. Do you have, uh, I've been to veil in all seasons with the Fords. I as I recall, there are many foreign visitors and they must, uh, take a remarkable look at the kind of alpine setting as well many of them they may be. Skiers or visitors in the summer. But how remarkable this particular collection of plants is for people from all corners of the world? We certainly bore that in mind when we were trying to decide what kinds of plants to grow here. You know, many gardens only grow plants from the region that they are in in the country, and we made a decision that we were very international ski destination. And it's like you say many of our visitors come from all over the world. And so we made a decision. We certainly our The pride of our collection is our Colorado Alpine collection. But we have plants from all over the world and the most asked for plants. Are the Adolf ice from the European Alps and the deep blue gentian also from the Alps, and we also grow a Himalayan blue poppy, which is not a very easy plant to grow. And those are the highlights of this garden. I suppose. Columbines too, of course from Colorado, but You know the international plants cause a stir. I imagine it's a learning curve, especially when you're bringing implants from the Himalayas or they European Heights. What have you learned about these plants in by putting them in this kind of controlled environment that they are hardier or more delicate than you expected? Have you been surprised by anything that these plants have taught you? I mean, I would say that they're on Unbelievably hardy and one of the The best things about Vail, Colorado, is that we are able to put these mostly out in natural conditions. We plant them in native soil, for the most part, which is very hard and would not grow your common garden plants. But it's what the Alpine plants need. They thrive on a very lean, rocky soil. So the harder the better really, for most of those Alpine plants in England, where I'm from, we have to spend a lot of time protecting Alpine's because they get too much rain, So they're grown in little closures with lids on them to prevent this, the rain coming down on the plants. Here. We can just put them out there and they thrive in the environment here. So, um, we have to do very little fertilizing. Very little watering. Um, so they make life easy for us, really, In many ways, Nicolo Ripley, his executive director of the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, so many gardeners would love to have a garden that makes their life easy. Well, Nikolay, you get to See so many of the guests and the tourists who come through Vale did you get to host the forwards at the Alpine garden? Yes, many times. Um In fact, they used to come unannounced most of the time. And, you know, come at times when we weren't expecting them. And so that was a real treat. I remember one particular afternoon. The gardens was very quiet and I had my door. Water in her stroller. She was just a little baby, and she was parked by one of the benches in the shade. And I heard a voice calling over to me Did did I mind if they moved the stroller because they wanted to sit at the bench and I looked over and it was president and Mrs Ford. So of course I rushed over and said, You know, of course, no problem. But by that time Mrs Ford was already um, you know, playing with Katie and her little baby stroller, and, um she said, you know, if you don't if you have some errands to run, you know, don't mind us. We'll watch the baby for you. Um, while you do you know, while you do your chores, and so you know, that was I I laugh and tell my daughter that Her first baby sitter was a president. So that's a wonderful and very warm and very typical of the Fords. Warm story about how their graciousness with everyone, Nicola Thank you. Thank you for having me from April of this year in Compton, formerly with ABC News for anyone who loves flowers. Could there be a more perfect, more dreamy setting for them? Then what? House itself. Betty Ford moved in and with her her daughter, Susan Ford Bales, who joins us now, Susan, Welcome from your home in Texas when you I've covered Susan as a reporter since she was 16 years old Susan those times when you moved into the White House, um flowers were everywhere. My mother, you know, loved flowers, and so she was happy to have fresh flowers in her house. And I like to have fresh flowers at my house here. Absolutely. At the White House. There is an elaborate hierarchy. There is a full time florist on the staff, and I have seen the cart going around in the White House, putting fresh flowers on almost every table on a daily basis. Did your mom get involved with that? Was there a, um, a greenhouse on the property where she could come in and choose things? No, there wasn't a greenhouse on the proper Pretty. And if there is a greenhouse someplace else, I never got to see it. But, uh, she loved the fresh flowers and, yes, the White House did beautiful fresh flowers. You know, you gotta remember. And when we moved in, it was a pretty tumultuous time. So I don't think Mother got involved in the flowers as quickly as she would have. That probably would have been something she would have chosen to do. But she had so many other things. As you know, she had a state dinner within six days. Days of us moving in there, so she had a lot of other things, keeping her busy, but she loved the floral shop and she would pick the colors and that sort of thing, and she has favorite flowers. There's no question well, we're going to get to the favorite flowers. But I want to ask you about the idea that the White House Is a world stage for American design. And your mother could use those state dinners for flowers and statuary. Could do you do you remember that first state dinner? I don't think I was at that one. I was at the one for the Shaw of Iran, right? I I don't think I went to the first one either, because I think actually, we were still living in Alexandria, Virginia. We hadn't moved in. But the one that stands out to me the most was the one that was done for President Sadat, and he was a big fan of Western art and so mother had Remington's and other Western sculptures as the centerpieces. Some tables just had flowers and some had sculptures. But she did that with other heads of state. She found out what they were interested in and what kind of art they were interested in. And then from there, they would choose sculptures to be in the center pieces and how to do the flowers. And I mean the social office did an amazing job of coordinating tablecloths with sculptures with flowers and that sort of thing and the China and choosing which China? My mother, I know made the difference, and they went away from long had tables to round tables because she felt they were much easier for people to have conversations. Susan, you are so right about that. And in this White House state dining room, there's room on With round tables for about 130 guests, and that was the those were the years when I first started covering the White House, and I think that was a larger seating than some of the earlier state dinners and the idea that all of the flowers and the other decor come together to go back to the Sadat dinner. Remember? Not only was it a tumultuous time for the United States and for your parents and the change of in administration in Washington, but it was on the cusp of movement. In the Middle East. Eventually, another year or two. Later came the Camp David Accords, and President Sadat was a very, very important player in this Egypt. Moving was going to be extraordinary, and he was such a worldly man, and he did appreciate American culture and the idea that these famous.
