"The m rna. Soon after it's finished using the instructions so this idiot to say it. Alters your rna. Stop it just fucking stop it due to show nobody. I shot joe. Everybody's saying bitch. The shot the ball up bound bound bound bound. Okay so to whoever that nameless idiot was okay with that done. I think it's time to welcome katrina vanden who will back to the show. I'm so happy. To welcome back to the program could trina vanden who will she is the publisher of the nation magazine and now editorial director because you step down a. You're a couple of years ago now. Is that a after almost twenty five years a lot of a lot of news in that time. But i've never seen pace of news as we were talking about like this. I mean it's just a wave every day and we thought it was trump and still in the backdrop the kind of drumbeat of How to put it revving. Everyone up for his own purposes. But it's not what it was but it is something different because they're just african. It's interesting we have so many anniversaries too. Because i think they are. They do help people orient and some ways and certainly younger generation which has been really didn't live through it but also hasn't really thought much about it last year. True you know so so. We just passed the twentieth anniversary of nine eleven. And you and i. I think we're only about a month apart in age. I think you're a month older than i am november fourth. So we you know. I have a daughter who's now twenty two so she was a baby. When nine eleven happened i was living in los angeles and my life was in flux at that time i just adopted her actually adopted her from kazakhstan and we had just gotten home. She was eighteen months old so she was all new My radio station. It was went the whole dot com. Bust my station was the first to go. Internet only dot com bust happened. I was let go so on nine. Eleven it hits. I don't have a radio station to go into for the first time in twenty years. And i'm thinking i'm i'm leaving los angeles because the world is crazy and Buildings are being attacked. And i wound up moving to new mexico but my daughter who was not quite two yet. We talked about it the other night and she said alison. You're too young so you obviously don't remember it. But what do you know about it. She goes mom honestly. I don't know a whole lot other than they attacked a big office building in new york. Oh my god that's that that's why she's reading now and i you know i know she is. You do begin to feel like you're almost almost at that time because there's so much reflection there's so much thinking about what we've learned what we haven't learned. I have to say. I was on nine eleven. It was a beautiful day as it was here on nine. Eleven the other day and i went to work after voting for the first time it was a primary. Wow and. I voted for mark green. Who later lost to bloomberg. And i'm crossing fourteenth street. Our offices were at irving place in fifteenth. And i looked down university place of people and you could see the smoke and the white like that. The breed that covered people for days just suffocating. People and people running. I went to the office. I had an office and we sat in the conference room all day. Just watching the first mean the first hour. I didn't see but it had happened. And then the second tower. By the time i got to and i you know part of what we had to do was it. Sounds old fashioned. We ripped the magazine because we went to press the next. Everyone's writing and i think we struck a tone of you know just the anger degree for justice. Not vengeance trying to think through what had happened to us and a fear that there would be war fairly quickly because of the administration and their plans on the shelf but also as editor. I had to kind of balance. There was proportionality between personal grief and thinking of readers. And how do you make sense for people. And i had been hijacked in one thousand nine hundred seventy eight. Oh go visit my father. Who was then in geneva at the un it was. I sat on the plane for eight hours later. Wrote about it the next day for the washington. Post what you have to remember there. Were people on those planes. The hijacking was part of. And we're learning now. Some people were able to cull through others. It's not so clear but that feeling of listening to some of the people who've been hijacked was also but we we did a book called a just response is all i mean. We had everyone from bill. Moyers to naomi klein. Jonathan schell and it just trying to make sense of it and trying to express a view That was not popular in wartime to talk about barbara. She was an interview with. Barbara was in our first issue at nine eleven. And i mean i respect enormously. She had security details. You nicole for you know because because she dared to vote against the only voice in congress in either chamber to say no. I will not vote for the authorization of use of military force and look how precious she was because twenty years later. They're still using that same to go. In and bomb other countries any bars i know and then russell feingold to his credit was one of the few. I think i don't know if he was the sole vote against the patriot act which able admitted they hadn't read. I mean they you know it was just a signal that you were on board and it's.

"He said. We must pass the four of the people act. We must pass the john. Lewis voting rights advancement act but he left out the mechanism that can make that possible. The now they may be able to get the infrastructure stuff done because of reconciliation. Because it's budgetary. I don't think they can make that case that it's budgetary. When it comes to the vote the right to vote. They need to overcome a filibuster which the republicans are gonna do meaning. We need sixty votes instead of fifty. And there's no way we're going to get sixty votes unless they kill the filibuster or carved out an exception for any constitutional issues and the votes certainly midst meets that criteria. He didn't say the word filibuster. He didn't touch on that issue. What it's going to take to get it done. And i think that was a pretty big omission. It was and i agree with you about the speech. I thought it was really good I thought he brought brought the foyer. Go to the issue and and he needed to do that. I mean it was overdue For him to weigh in on this. And as we're watching this unfold. And you know. I mean it's that you have what's happening down in texas and the legislators flying having to fly out date to in order to break their quorum and do you know all these kinds of things that are happening all over the country in states And it's pretty clear that this is going to be a very very very salient issue Over the next few months and while they're in washington trying to get this infrastructure bill through. It's very important. They have liver these material You know gains to the american people. This is also happening. It's percolating it's coming up to the surface and so you know. I think that they realize too. That biden was going to have to join the fray in a very you know dramatic way and he gave a dramatic speech. You're absolutely right. And i was very surprised that he didn't mention the filibuster and that he didn't also i mean i actually thought when they announced the speech he's going to endorse this clyburn idea a out a and making the argument which i think i mean the argument being that that you know look. They broke the philip. You know they ended the filibuster for you. Know federal judges for god's sakes you know you can do for that you can refer you know. Tax cuts ford voting rights. You know right. And so. I mean to me i mean my feeling is about this. They should get rid of it. Altogether in fact if it were up to me we'd get rid of the senate altogether assuming we can't go that far This seemed like the logical sort of step. And i thought the i and clybourn is very close to biden and biden. You know sees him as someone as a kingmaker who basically made it possible for everyone to become president which is true very true. I i so. I expect that they that they are in contact about this. I mean i don't know if it's direct or or whatever but i'm sure that by knows what clyburn is saying one way or the other and that there is some thought about that particular idea the problem with the filibuster. And you know i. I think that well let me just back up a little bit in some of the some of the polling. I can't remember where i read this. It was some article where they went. You know they sent out a reporter on a you know anthropological mission to diners in. Ohio or nebraska. I guess maybe we're talking to independent voters. Many of whom had voted for trump in two thousand sixteen and voted for biden in twenty twenty group across the board. Every one of them was against getting rid of the filibuster. This is some kind of emotional thing with people but it was clear that they didn't understand. What the filibuster was what it was used for and the fat i. I don't think they even knew that over the last few years and over many years at various times they they've changed the rules the filibuster all the time. It's just tradition. It's not in the constitution. Not something and it's not written in stone And so. I don't i i sort of felt like you know. Maybe biden should have done some educating on that right i mean maybe the democrats need to tell some of these people what the filibuster really is. I don't think they really understand it. Having said that. I i've been very cynical about this because from what you know. I tend to take politicians generally at their word when they make these sherman statements. You know and joe manchin came out a month or so ago and said i'm not messing with the filibuster not doing it and then you had little cinema come up and think and there are a whole bunch of other ones quiet but they're backing it as well so i was very cynical about this and thinking that nothing was going to happen but this i'm i'm i'm not. I'm not completely sure of that now. And the reason is is that ryan grim at the intercept has been writing this stuff about mansion. If you haven't been reading it you should. I don't know where he's getting. Where what his sources are in this talk and maybe he's completely wrong but you know. I mean grandma's a real progressive type. Somebody on this stuff and he really. He believes that this is still in flux. And one of the only you know reporters up there who actually seemed to think this. But you know but he doesn't march with this. You know to the same drummer. That all these people on cnn and msnbc to. Who just say oh. It's out of the question it's done there. Forget the filibuster. It's you know they're not going to get rid of it. So i've been reading this stuff by grim and maybe it's just wishful thinking or me looking for you know any kind of hope that somehow or another. This is going to happen. But the fact that by made that speech and then you know he got got some blowback from a lot of people going. hey man a great speech grow blowback passion for not in brooklyn right. Yes gonna do about this. And so i you know i they. I'm sure they heard that. I have no doubt. And in fact they had the Civil rights leaders in the white house. Right and i'm sure that they were saying. Hey you know. Words are great. We appreciate it. Thanks very much. What you plan your. Okay we and time is wasting. So i just i i mean this is just me saying this based on the stuff that i'm reading from from grim and from the you know reading the tea leaves on on biden making the speech now and saying some of the things i mean when he says we have to pass these bills he knows very well that they're not gonna no republicans are going to vote for this bill. Roggio certainly not ten of them so the he knows that the only way to pass them is to eliminate the filibuster at least for these for for these kinds of constitutional issues constitutional matters and vote the right to vote. Shirley meet that.

"And those maps were actually enacted into law without any changes. This was a conspiracy that hit just about every level of florida politics. It was a sneaky behind the scenes subversion of the constitution They ran a secret shadow. Redistricting process. And you you all have lived under it in florida for the last ten years. Yeah and like so many other states. The maps that were drawn in twenty ten in florida not only held for a decade like they did in north carolina in michigan in ohio. In florida in georgia in pennsylvania. Democrats haven't taken back a state legislative chamber in either of those states and more than a decade and now they're going to have the chance this coming fall and winter to redraw those maps for the next decade and locked themselves in power for another ten years and we warned everybody. I mean it's not like this has been a secret for the last ten years. We were screaming. You've gotta get out. You got to vote in those state elections. It's so important. Because the twenty twenty cents as is gonna come in those and that as was so screwed up to so those numbers are skewed even more that giving them more ammunition to draw the districts and more reprehensible and heinous ways People didn't heed the warnings. I think we just don't have the sense of urgency on the left We're not you know part of it. I can put in sort of positive terms. Were not lemmings. We don't all march to the talking points that they send out they don't send me talking points if they did. I throw them in the trash. Because you know. I think for myself on the right. You've heard all the compilations where all the different talking heads are reading the same talking point so you hear the same message all day long. It's very disciplined. And they have this long game you know. It goes back to the clip. I play all the time from a. What's his name from. Nineteen eighty goo-good governments syndrome We don't want people to vote the more they vote the worst we do. They have been big yousry. Yes wasn't rich paul. "Mongrel. He's up the left. He ain't no better than the pope. And oprah winfrey and tom hanks and arrested at wicked. Okay that's about all. I can take that but how. How does that stuff. How does that allow to go on in the name of religious freedom and and their tax exempt. I we co we we may. We may have different views on this. I would defend that really really. I'm not gonna to bill in and tell you what you can i. i agree. no he can be. he can say that he's got every right to say it but to not have to pay taxes to be tax exempt. Because he's a church. If if if there's going to be an exemption tax exemption for churches in the united states there is and that includes for the great progressive churches that we love many of which would go would fold purchasing back sitting on valuable real estate from when they were when they had more funds right. So if you start taxing those churches you will be shutting down Countless progressive churches countless african american churches. You will be shutting those man if you get in the business of saying this one. Not that one right. That that's not really just got first. Amendment would stick with the first amendment works for us. Let's let's instead of trying to crush it. Let's let's offer a the better ideas you know. The answer the answer to that trump rally in ohio and ugliness with it Ultimately it satisfying martin. Retailer green spoke in jim jordan. We pass around means. That are funny. And i'm all for it. You know. keep yourself saying right. Right But that's not night fight. You fight it by building. A vibrant Democratic culture anti-fascism is fine but anti-fascism completes suspends the begins with fascism. Let's write a sentence that doesn't have the word fascist in it. That would be nice but it now. We're told if you're anti-fascist that you're a terrorist. If i'm antifascist. But so were the soldiers who went to fight world war two that the way things are twist and the theme that i took for. Today's show is one that i go back to all the time of opposite world in his out up as down. Nothing makes sense. Look i'm an ordained minister of the church of the flying spaghetti monster. I paid twenty bucks. I'm an ordained minister. Maybe i should open my own little church and claim a tax exemption. Because if he can do it. Why can't i and maybe that's the way around it. We all claim tax exemptions. And then eventually they're going to have to say well. This is no good. I know i'm stuck on. This shouldn't be politically. it's a nonstarter. Not i mean. Can you the politician. You seriously presumed pursued that would would lose in the biggest landslide right which is against opposite. Hal member most churches. Most houses of worship are not like that jackass. You just showed her that kind of preaching and preaching his out there He's not exceptional buddha's also not every day. This is not what the church or the synagogue with a mosque on your corner is doing right i. I don't think churches should be tax exempt but to come at that you know to use these these guys to sort of undermine what many communities is unfortunately standing in the place especially in poor communities. God i can't believe i'm making his argument And the place of the social services that have been gutted by decades of neoliberalism. Yeah that's not the way it should be. But we don't wanna pull that rug out right because we can't stand that guy right now. I am down here that at least in my community during cova and continuing to this day The food distribution for people who are hungry is coming from at least in coral springs florida. The the cobb odd that the orthodox jewish temple where the hasidim that they're the ones giving out the food problematic as the preacher. We just saw we wanted to as right. I know so again. I just come back to let us not limit ourselves antifascism but to the creation of the vibrant democratic culture which is the only real response to let us build something so that we're not leaning on how bad and churches whether they're right or left provide social services but we providing i'll borrow term from anarchism. We're providing mutual aid ourselves through the system that we have of governance. Because that's the story. That trump is trying to distract at from wong was no discussion of policy in any. We noticed that. Never never right. Never you never discuss policy. You can't win that argument. He moves imoussa fight. Well let's take it back instead of meeting him over there in the mode and i'm not saying know. Go go low. we go on. Let's let's but are we building okay. So joe biden is trying to do the right things. I i'm a i'm a supporter of bernie sanders. I like these big programs social programs designed to help us the people who most need help and again the right doing everything they can to shut it all down to make sure none of it passes. We're looking at police or former looking at infrastructure. We're looking at better healthcare. It looks like none of that may go through because of their obstructionist ways. So how can we build it if they won't come well. I'm not an advocate for bipartisanship. I'm i'm not. I'm not worried about getting those republican votes and like you would probably be fine with a. Let's do democratic grant loan and let's strengthen those progressive folks out there and then let's challenge them and move them I mean like these terms. I mean. I'm a lefty but i don't really. Let's move them toward humanness right that. That's what we're working toward Again you you should have contrasted like the trump rally is literally a dehumanizing event. He spoke for instance. he's trying to speak of undocumented people. So how does he oester. Daddy tells a story of a snake undocumented man. He has owned the snake but he also has a man and went. Quote is disgusting. Says he's hacking to death a a woman and her fifteen year old sister and a very very small pieces with michelle. Oh my god. that's image. He's pudding in his followers mind that's a dehumanizing image So i don't want to. I want to respond to that by telling you know we have to move back and forth. We have to pay attention. This and i can't believe the pushback. I'm getting on his vanity hairpiece from people saying trump's gone You should not be reporting on him. You're giving him air. Oh my god do you think i mean look. He didn't get as many votes as biden but he got a lot of more than any anybody else in history except for biden. Yes nice and we have to keep paying attention But at the same time we have to be sort of looking at look over there. Keep our eye on on trump even as we are trying to to tell these more human stories now yet look more power to biden when he does that builds that those programs but of course we can organize in our communities. We can organize Locally and we can build the infrastructure The puts the pressure on those with more power. And i hope we do. I mean that. That's the scary part. Because i am paying attention as much as i'd like not to. I mean i don't air his comments except for the stupid thing about planting going the man from ohio going to a plant. Because i just can't believe just how out of touch with reality is and and people still worship him. That is that that's the phenomenon that's happened around. Him makes it harder for the democrats to fight back against it because frankly we don't have anybody who's this christ like or anti like figure nor do we want one pending hamer said..

Being his press secretary you knew from alabama and she was a fan and she helped us with this stuff but aside from that. We never talk politics i to this day. Don't know what your politics are. You know the rule of thumb. Was i think probably still is for some entertainment based Audio radio is that religion and politics is defining ride You know you're you're talking to republicans and democrats an independent and for you to step out there especially in an inner taliaferro and say. This is the way i feel right. You're not the right forum for it absolutely not well. The rule of thumb is that you're offending half your audio of course so why chance and so i you know. I'm not the most knowledgeable. Obviously i know how i feel But it really has nothing to do with what i was doing which was trying to bring a smile to people and i'll end on this note because it was such a great moment I got into radio. Because i just wanted to be as good as i could tell jokes. Maybe make people smile as they traveled to work for their hour. And a half two hours in los la and And i did that. And it was wonderful. And we'd made an appearance at the orange county fair where it's one of the finest fairs. I've ever been a part of it. So well run. He would have thousands of people that would come and stand in line to get her autograph or take a picture and as it would sometimes happened. This entire family came up a father and a mother and three beautiful little kids and they were all dressed perfectly which is always the mom she dressed everybody including the husband and the mom and the kids did all the talking. The dad stood behind just smiled and her hit his wife leaned over and said he's he's a huge fan he's just shy and he didn't say a word to us and we signed their thing and off they went and the event was over and i was walking to my car and i was approached by this very shy dad who didn't say anything behind him was his wife and his kids but they were standing in the back and and there was somber. Look on the wife's face that i didn't see at the fair and i looked at the dead and he was in the beginning of of a level of emotion and smiling at that point and i stopped because i realized there was something that he wanted to say and so i just went silent and he said i have listened to you guys for since the day you came on the air and i've loved every moment of it last year. My mother got cancer. And every day i would drive to the hospital and i would brush the skin on her head where her hair used to be. Hold her hand when she got her chemo. Injection and i lost her in that year. But i wanted you to know that throughout that period the toughest time my entire life. The only smile that i got was you guys and i welled up and hugged him and then walked to my car and it was in that moment and i heard that same kind of thing. A couple of times after beth. I just got into this to be entertaining until jokes. I didn't know that what we do for a living and what we do because we love it could actually help somebody and the time that they needed it. And i drove home that day and i honestly grew up a little in another kind of weird wacky. I became another guy So it's been my pleasure to be a part of this wonderful journey into have you as part of it nicole and for you to have me on today. Men's the world and it means the world to me to mark. I love you. You'll always be part of my life. And yeah i look back on that. I can't believe it's been thirty years. I mean thirty years ago. "We jumped on the the usos airplane and they were flying over with you know. Half of the airplane was stuff for the for the soldiers. And we kind of piggybacked on that and i remember. We landed in switzerland to get gas and we were told if we got off the airplane. We wouldn't be allowed back on. Which of course means we got off the airplane. It was actually scotland. But yes you're right. Scotland as an airport and we got back on. Yes we saw But yeah i and i remember it was. It was intense and that we were allowed to be on the ground for exactly four hours Do your show in and get the hell out there on the and so it was. It was a quick turnaround and did something that i found to be. Brilliant i because it was such a fast turn. I wore my watch. Which i never did. But i took my watch and when the rest of the airplane would sleep. I was awake. I kept myself on the sleep schedule of california. So that when i landed i was still good to go so while you guys slept. I was awake while i slept. You were aware. I kept a journal for on that trip and i. It was packed away years later. I found it. It was like the twenty fifth anniversary of the war. Or something. And i pulled it out in posted it again and i read it i. It brings me to tears but that was the kind of shit that we did and it wasn't just a goofy show. That was talking to soldiers who were stationed out there and it was before the holidays. It was christmas time and we would connect them with their families back home and it was. There wasn't a dry eye anywhere That day and and it was just so leaving closing the door of the plane and leaving those young men. There was just heartbreaking. it was just horrible. it was and that was you know. I'm glad you documented that. Because that was i think the end of ninety one. Yeah what that year for us. We were doing. The adventures. Of mark and brian filming. Kat we would finish the show at ten jump in a van gogh shoot. Tv climb in bed eleven. Get up and do it again So it was an exhausting year and and that was certainly A unique and very powerful way of saying goodbye to that that very powerful for year. Yeah it was and then but there but it wasn't over yet because we came back and we had already. I believe on your birthday show because we would do. These ridiculous birthday shows twice a year for you in december and for brian in may that we're just over the top crazy I was looking at video of one. That i do. I all kinds of stuff here Where you you for. Whatever reason really liked the marty robbins song el paso so we recreated the rosa's cantina and acted it out and had horses come in one year. We had the your big andy griffith fan. We re we built or our listeners. Built the Andy griffith show Jailhouse in the fun zone or parking lot which we call the funds on and we had done knots. Come in. I mean it was just a magical show in at the end of the show. I think we put you in a car to go. Meet andy for the first time so yeah i went to the set of matlock has tried to get andy to come out. He couldn't get as he was shooting But i met andy of all things. I was taken to the makeup room and very was and i met him and i had a chance to explain to him how much he meant it. Of course he hears that from everybody but as we were meeting and talking his makeup artist was trimming his eyebrows with scissors of of of all things. 'cause bushy hair of let but he could not have been more gracious or wonderful and that was a unique and special wonderful moment in fell. If i haven't said thank you thank you for not. I'm laughing because i could just picture with what you're thinking with. The eyebrows thinking aren't going to get a couple of the clippings and there's a bit in here somewhere everything the game a bit seriously. Everything became the it was. That was a big big year in in very special to meet andy. Because you know even to this day in fact you'll enjoy this. I met On the program. I i met luke perry and when it was first presented to me about luke being on the show i didn't. I was very busy in the nineties. And i didn't see beverly hills nine two out plus i mean i was i. It wasn't my bag. It's not the kind of show. I'd see but i was told that luke would be somebody we should have on the show so i agreed he came in. I fell in love with him and one of the in he and i were big buddies in one of the main things we had in common was the andy griffith show. He was as big a fan as i was. And we would do a thing where we would go for months and not speak And then most of our communication was text he would text me align from the andy griffith show and the the the game was to text back the very next line that comes from that moment awhile and neither he or i ever missed one. Wow and normally it would be months and our our normal communication was real simple instead of calling and saying. Hey our communication was. I would get a text from luke and it would be goober says hey and the proper response is hey to goober and that would be it and that would be all we would have so Sadly we we lost luke and it was such a shocking and saddening way for it to go. But yeah the andy griffith show still to this day a massive part of my life. Oh without a doubt. And of course it's synonymous with you. you know one other thing is kahlo. S was a big rock station in los angeles. You and brian were not exactly the rock aficionados. I think the the station birmingham was top. Forty right yes yes it was. I spent my entire life at top forty right so you really didn't know the music and it didn't matter because we would play anything everything. We had musical guests on. We mentioned pete townsend. We had crowded house. We had lyle lovett. We had jackson barry. Barry manilow is a friend of the show he did. The christmas show was awesome You know people that you would not expect came on and again because it was a thing where we're gonna we're gonna end on the progressive voices network in just a moment so i'm going to say goodbye to our friends at progressive voices. So we've got the graphic of the two of us with jackson and hammy just because they're you know they're the better parts of us but today also had to include the picture from this saturday night Speechifying by the former guy where we i didn't notice it because i didn't watch it but i saw all the accounts afterwards of that strange bowl jr in his pants. Right emmy and it's a if you look at it. Obviously he's wearing a bulky diaper underneath now. I hear that they do have less bulky adult diapers that don't create that kind of focal point photograph right but bridge may be the right.

"Lauren mayer with a song parody. I don't wanna know characterizing some politicians today who just don't wanna know they just just don't wanna know all right i am nicole sandler and i'm very excited to welcome our next guest because it's been a long time since we've spoken congressman dennis kucinich welcome. Welcome back to the program there. Thank you very much nicole. Good to be with you again. It's been awhile. It's been a long time in fact. I pulled out a photo. A couple of photos. From the last time i saw you which i believe was two thousand eight and i had my little daughter with me who at the nez now. Twenty two but at the time was at the time was about eight or nine years old so there she has biting my hand if you can see that and and we did take another picture together. That was a little little nicer so Where she actually stood still and so you were down here in florida. Campaigning hoping to win the democratic nomination for The two thousand eight presidential election right so it has been a while and then We spoke throughout the years during the days. I was on air. America radio and i looked back through my stuff and it seems like the last time we spoke was twenty twelve and that was your last year in congress right. That was my last year. I finished my term on january. Third two thousand thirteen right. Well it is nice to see you and nice to hear from you again and the the reason that you're here today is your new book. It's actually officially out tomorrow. But available for sales called the division of light and power. And when i first saw it i thought oh am i. Guess it's a spiritual thing. Because i had forgotten the story of your time as mayor of cleveland. And that's what this book is all about. It's a big book covering a two year stretch. But why don't you tell us the the basic story of what you tell in in the book and much more detail right Well it's it's A book not only for yesterday's cleveland but the context of it is relevant for today. This is about corporate espionage and corporate sabotage and price fixing and an attempt to you serpa municipal government by interest groups. Who have their own narrow concerns and not the broad-based concerns of the people. It's about An a relentless effort to try to steal from the people's cleveland municipal electric system and about the role that i played as a councilman and later on mayor to stop that from happening and the consequences that came as a result of that involved Dealing with organized crime assassination plots. I'm in this book. Has it all and it. It's nice to be able to talk about it retrospectively. But the core of the book rage is a question who's making the decisions in any community. Who's in charge. I say city hall's not just building on six and lakeside in cleveland. It's the board of the banks. The real estate combines utility monopolies and and the mob and every city has their own centers of power but people are now is where it's so. This book is is really a tutorial on on government in how to understand differ layers that are there and how to access lovers power. Yes and in fact. The prologue is wonderful. It's just too short paragraph. if you don't mind i want to read it. You wrote people who say you can't fight city hall. Don't know where it is. You have to find it before you can fight it. City hall was not only the door at great temple stone temple on east sixth and lakeside avenue. In downtown cleveland city hall was the boardroom. Cleveland's banks it's investor owned utilities. it's real estate combines. And the mob. In cleveland city hall was in the shadows giant specter invisible to the people of the city. I brought the invisible city hall to light with great consequences for my city. My family my friends and myself. I was the mayor and i fought city hall. I see that as the opening to the movie so have the movie rights been optioned yet. I've had people expressed interest but you know right now. I'm just focused on calling attention to the book. know it's written. It's written in a way. You know the way that i write. I try to be as descriptive as possible and bring the reader into the action and then move along with me through it And everything in the book. Nicole is documented. I spend out of time making sure that every claim that was in there can be backed up by several sources. And you've got them all here. It's all i mean the whole back end of the book. The book is It's six hundred and what. I'm looking at fifty eight pages or so but you start with the end notes at five sixty eight and that's after your glossary. So this is well documented and footnoted. Well i also wanted to say that as a means of trying to help the reader get more information for those who buy the book. They'll have access to the division of light and power archives which adds the entire federal filings anti trust case Filings and you know thousands of more patriots. That wouldn't have been practical put into the book itself. Now i gotta ask you so. You left the office of mayor of cleveland in nineteen seventy nine. That's over forty years ago. Why just come out with this book now because it took me forty years right..

Us has the privilege of standing here in the first place is about the covenant we have with one another as an american people plus them out of many one it above all else must be protected and so as i close and nobody believes a preacher when he says close let me say that as a man of faith i believe that democracy is the political enactment of spiritual idea the secret worth of all human beings the notion that we all have within us. A spark of divide a right to participate in the shaping of our destiny. John lewis understood that was beaten on a bridge. defending it. amelia boynton many women. "I can tell you that boy. Do we have a lot going on today. First of all today congressman former congressman. Dennis kucinich is here now. I heard him a couple of hours ago. On with tom hartman. He'll be he'll spend a little more time with us Just because i put aside more time to spend with him. Dennis senators somebody that i've interviewed. Oh dozens of times over the years. Although i looked back through my records and saw that it's been since february of twenty twelve. That was the last time. I spoke to him now. In two thousand twelve. Dennis kucinich lost his seat in congress Mostly due to gerrymandering. Actually redistricting right where they combined his district along with marcie. captors basically. They rolled his district into hers eliminating his seat. And i'm sure that was done on purpose. So marcy captor remained in the senate. I like marcy capterra. One of the thing. That i don't like about her is that she and dennis kusanagi. Both practicing catholics as for. I don't know if dennis kucinich just still a practicing catholic but they both come from that background and therefore are i hate. I hate the terminology. They use a pro choice with prolife. Which i call anti choice. Marcy and dennis kucinich was always able to keep his personal views away from his His responsibilities as an elected official representing the people who voted him into office. Marcy kaptur on the other hand Always bugged me that while she would vote with the democrats. She would vote reasonably Democratically on most issues but when it came to matters of choice she led her. Religion take precedent over the people that she was representing and she would bring her religion into her work as a congresswoman and that. I'm sorry that's wrong. I believe that when you're elected that you're elected to represent the people who voted for you Not to push your own personal beliefs and preferences but that's just me anyway. I can't find results for. Nicole sandler live. what's going on. We all hear everything good on youtube. Looks okay. i don't know what john is saying. But we're here we're here So anyway dennis senate has this new book out. I have not had a chance to read it because it just showed up yesterday. And as fast as i might read i cannot make it through five hundred and forty eight pages or thereabouts. You know in a day or it came on on friday or saturday. I'm just i just showed up. Is what i'm saying so i looked through it. I know what it's about and actually knew this story because the story of the book it's called them a division of light and power doesn't have anything to do with his time in congress. Instead of deals with the two years. He was mayor of cleveland from nineteen. Seventy seven to seventy nine when he stood up to the power base and the money to interests in cleveland and stopped them from selling the publicly owned power company to private hands and Was vindicated many years later But you know. Dennis senate i think is always stood up for the little guy and anyway so i used to talk to him quite a bit back when he was you know he was the real progressive in congress. Right before alan grayson showed up and said let me tell you about the republican healthcare plan. There was dennis kucinich who was always advocating for a department of peace. And i'll tell you something. That's something that i still never forgot. I would much rather see a department of peace then a department of war which is now the department of defense. How about we go for the piece right. So last time i spoke to him was in twenty third twenty twelve. Last time i saw him was in twenty two thousand eight when he was running for the democratic nomination for president was actually his second run for the nomination in two thousand four. I was still not quite fully entrenched in the You know what he was running in two thousand and four. Actually i in two thousand three. I was up in the boston area doing music radio. And just when i first learned of dennis kucinich because i was not a political animal back then and there was like a contest that he had a it was a single guy and there was a contest. You know have dinner with dennis kucinich. And he was looking for a wife. Well he didn't find his wife out of the contest he got some press because again it was brought to my attention but years later he wound up marrying his still watch. Elizabeth kucinich the karate. Joe this will be a live interview. He's going to join us at the bottom of the hour on zoom so this is not pre taped. But i'll tell you what today so so dennis kucinich coming up. I thought though. So when i last saw him in two thousand eight when he was in the primary i was working. Then here in south florida mornings on winz which was then a progressive. Talk station owned by clear channel It's now the fourth or fifth sports talk station in town. It has worse ratings than we had by the way. So i guess they didn't care about that But this photograph. If you're watching on one of the streams this was at a campaign event here in south florida. That's me and that's alison. She i guess if this was two thousand eight she was about nine eight or nine years old. So yeah so. That's the last time. I saw dennis kucinich we will. We won't be in person but he will be on zoom so we will see one another and We'll pick up right where we left off i do. I do have a few questions for him. Which is a good thing. Because i'm going to be interviewing him in a little while. Now tomorrow laugh. You will be here because she's back. Yes and on wednesday an interview. That i've been working to get for a while and the reason it's taken so long is because well. Our berman has been busy. Ari berman these days rights for mother jones magazine but for years he has beat has been a voting rights and in fact the book he wrote about five years ago Bring us the ballot. I think it was what's what it was called. is still relevant and it gets worse. So he's been crazy busy obviously given what's happening in our world And he has the cover story right now. At mother jones in the current issue and Let me see if i can find the title. Whatever i will post it for you. Anyway i recorded an interview with our a berman. this morning. That will play back on wednesday because oh my goodness we're in the midst of it and one of the things that we talked about was. Obviously you know what brought us to this point. The history behind the jim crow laws which he likens. What's going on today to. But but you know it always brings us back to joe. Manchin senator joe manchin has a stick up his ass. And i'm not quite sure where it's from. I guess maybe the fact that he is a you know allegedly a democrat in a very very republican state. But the things that he says makes no sense at all for instance. Yesterday chris chris wallace interviewed. Joe manchin yes joe. Manchin was on fox news. Sunday and even chris wallace guests that joe mansion facts all fucked up and i'm not gonna play the whole thing for you but after they had gotten into it for about five minutes chris wallace finally says..

"Always expect boca to say who picks up the tab for this. Why howie klein of down. Tyranny on the nicole sandler but he doesn't thankfully hi. Howie low how are you. I'm okay how are you doing good. It's good it's been. I realized it's been a few weeks since we've spoken. Because i was out to three weeks ago because it was david's birthday. You were out last week because you had a hospital day and so we haven't spoken in a while and you know i guess it's just more of the same happening but it seems like so much has happened since we last spoke. Yeah what has happened. what has happened more of the same. I guess i don't have a list in front of me but shiva's happened. I couldn't tell you offhand what it's not like in the days of trump whereas like every day there were twenty things and i had to pick and choose but you know we're plugging away. We're moving along. Joe biden disappointed me in a couple of ways. I'm sure you're not surprised to hear that. But for instance in his he put out this ridiculous budget but a few things of of his campaign promises from the from the campaign have disappeared like very important things. Yes i know weren't enough to convince me to vote for other. People voted for him. Because of some of these promises that you never hear of anymore. Yeah well and some of us voted for him to vote against donald trump because as bad as joe biden ten. Be he's still is is light years. Better than trump i i. If trump had won reelection. I fear for where we'd be today and you know things may not be great today but they certainly be a lot worse if he were still in office to look what he's doing so yes we agree on that. So i you know before you came on how he had just changed gears. I don't know if you heard about the story or not. Do you do remember though that back in november Some of us were surprised at how republican florida went especially miami dade county right well. Big story in the miami herald today that a few groups media watchdog groups did an investigation into spanish language. Radio in miami and go figure they found to to give you the real reader's digest version. They lied about every goddamn thing. The first the first paragraph of the article says thousands of dead people in non-citizens voted in the twenty twenty presidential election. There were more votes cast than registered voters. Black lives matter and antifa infiltrated the deadly storming of the us capital. And then it says these are just some of the conspiracy. Theories compiled in new media. Monitoring report published wednesday revealing the extent to which misinformation pervaded the airways of miami's spanish language. Talk radio but wait a minute but these will these. It sounded like he was saying things that would have that reported on the election. Right this did. They also influence the election all. I'm sure they did well. This study only. It followed the january six insurrection so they took a week like january sixth through the thirteenth and studied just analyzed that programming but the lying in the misinformation didn't start after the election. This was in full swing throughout the campaign and my point is it. Seems like there's nobody monitoring what's going on on spanish language rio in south florida. Well.

"Here's something else stupid. He did okay so the medal of freedom was award yesterday. And who did he give it to this time. Some a wrestler wrestler. At least it wasn't rush limbaugh again. No it was. Oh sorry. it was a wrestler. Dan gable an olympic gold medalist. He shrimp touted gables record. He pretended he won last month. That's something else is all part of the story. But i'm not sure why they wrote that. But it says in the in the headline to presidential feeder freedom hasn't traditionally been used as a reward for political allies. Much seemed to help them says all he does. That's all he does and so good anyway. So rachel maddow tweeted and this happened. I saw the video. Trump just walks out of the room leaving him in the middle of the oval office. Unsure what to say or do next gable literally shrugged his shoulders and raises arms to reporters as if to say. I guess we're done. Oh my god he just turned a little bit. And you know we've seen standing there. We've seen him do similar things before when he like one time when he had what's supposed to be signing some executive order or some other bullshit and he turned to walk out of the room before he signed the thing and they had to pull him back in your forgot to firing the thing exactly. Yeah in fact. Stephen and writes complicating matters. This appear to be the latest in a series of examples of the president rewarding political allies. Oh sorry that was a whole different thing. It wasn't what you thought it was based on what you said. But no this was still about giving his friends rewards. Yeah he just does that. He forgets to sign things. He walks through the wrong. You know the one time that bush walked into a door because it was locked and he made a joke and tried to pull it open on. Remember that this. That trump does that times infinity. Right you're right. it's hugely embarrassing.

Meanwhile Isis is mobilising sleeper cells in Raka and attacks have taken place tonight and finally writes David Ignatius there's the scary issue of the thousands of Isis detainees families who may be breaking out of camps and prisons After Turkish attack with no American backup plan this is a major disaster coming at us because of trump's decision hours left to stop it sadly the hours left have dwindled to no time left to stop it as just moments after nine am eastern time Wednesday Urkish President Burdon tweeted quote the Turkish Armed Forces together with the Syrian National Army just launched Operation Peace Spring against PKK slash y. p. g. and dash terrorists in northern Syria just know that PK KYI PG he's talking about the Kurds and dash terrorists I guess is in reference to Isis although Turkey considers the Kurds quote interests they're our allies he continued our mission is to prevent the creation of terror corridor across our southern border and to bring peace to the area sure make no mistake he's talking genocide how did we get here well to recap.
