"Nicole Mann, the first Native American woman in space on gardening in zero gravity. By Jeffrey kluger Nicole Mann was busy growing dwarf tomatoes aboard the International Space Station just before I reached her by phone in a call patched from New York through mission control in Houston, Texas, and up to the station, orbiting 400 kilometers, 250 miles above the earth. Dwarf tomatoes are no minor thing for a station program preparing human beings for long-term stays on the moon and later Mars, where they will have to learn to live off the land, which includes growing their own food. I was testing out the different light sources and different fertilizers to see how that affects the growth of the tomatoes, man told me. In order to test them, we will get to taste the tomatoes when they are grown too. Horticulture is only one part of the some 200 experiments, man, age 45, will be conducting during her 6 month stay aboard the station. A stay that began with her launch with three other crew members aboard a SpaceX crew dragon spacecraft in October. It was the 6th time a dragon has carried astronauts to the ISS, but with man on board, the flight stood apart. Not only was she the first woman to command a crew dragon, she also became the first Native American woman in space. A member of the walecki of the round valley Indian tribes of cavello, California. To be honest, she says, it makes me feel very proud. I think of the generations that came before me and the obstacles and challenges that people had to overcome. They helped pave the way for my path and opened up a lot of opportunities for me. Man's route to NASA and space was a long and glittery one, a graduate of the U.S. naval academy, and then Stanford University, where she earned a master of science in mechanical engineering. She is also an active duty marine kernel who flew 47 combat missions in both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. She later worked as a test pilot for the F/A-18 hornet and Super Hornet. The navy's newest and most advanced carrier based strike aircraft, and has logged more than 2500 hours and 25 different types of aircraft, that exhaustive training and aircraft helped prepare her for the even trickier business of flying spacecraft, especially the dragon. Flying hornets teaches you compartmentalization. And that is huge, she says. When you're flying spacecraft, it's huge too. Sometimes you're doing things that are time critical that have dire consequences if things don't go properly. So you really need to be able to focus on precisely what you're doing and execute your goal. Aboard the station things are less urgent since, while the ISS requires regular upkeep and maintenance and occasional reboosts of its orbit, it essentially flies itself at an ever continuing path around the globe. That gives the crew members plenty of time for the work they have to do, and at least a little time for sightseeing and reflection. There are 7 people currently aboard the station, including man, three American astronauts, one astronaut from jaxa, the Japanese space agency, and three Russian cosmonauts. All is peaceable and collegial among the 7, but they are not blind to the fact that 400 kilometers below the U.S. and Russia are at geopolitical dagger points over the war in Ukraine. From space, however, none of that is visible, and it makes for a certain transcendence that astronauts have come to dub the overview effect. You look out the windows and take a quick glance, man says, and at first it looks just like what you've seen in pictures and movies. But if you pause and live in the moment a bit, you can take the time to appreciate the planet moving by at remarkable speed. You see weather changing, you can see what I used to think of as distant lands past under you in a matter of minutes. It really gives you a perspective of how small and fragile our planet is. And just how united we are on this one little globe. She continues. I hope that that perspective can be shared with more people throughout the world. And maybe that's something that will help united us as a human race. The earth isn't the only globe that's on man's mind as she serves out her station tour, even as the ISS crew tend to their daily responsibilities. Artemis one, the uncrewed Orion capsule that will one day return humans to the moon, is midway through its mission in lunar orbit, beaming back images of the close up moon and the distant earth, 400,000 kilometers away. Those pictures are being shared not just with the 7.8 billion people on the planet, but the 7 aboard the station, and that has man thinking about the future. Asked if she sees herself as a possible future member of the Artemis team, she responds with a straightforward, absolutely, adding, I think everybody at NASA is excited to be a part of the Artemis program. Here on the station, we upload the photographs and it's really exciting. It really invigorates. And this is just the beginning. The moon is a stepping stone for our exploration of Mars. But the moon and Mars are for later. For now, man has more than four months ahead in her current cosmic assignment, and she is mindful that every day she spends aloft carries a symbolic responsibility with it. Among the personal effects she brought with her on the mission is a traditional Native American Dream catcher, her mother gave her when she was a child. A reminder of her path setting, cultural status. She is also aware that even now, more than 60 years after humans began flying in space, women represent just 12% of all of the astronauts and cosmonauts who have ever left the planet. Her goal as a woman and an indigenous American is to help others like her follow her. I hope that young women can connect with me and my journey, she says, and maybe see a little bit of themselves in me. Maybe that will give them the inspiration and the courage that they need to follow their dreams..

"This is national native news. I'm Antonio Gonzalez. Vice president Kamala Harris vowed to fight to protect the Indian child welfare act, Harris discussed ICWA in remarks at The White House tribal nation summit, which was held this week in Washington, D.C.. She says she has a long-standing history of fighting for the principles of ICWA pointing to her work as an attorney and now as vice president. Harris says she's fully aware of the essential protection ICWA provides. And back to my time doing that work as an attorney, representing children and families in San Francisco and working on equal cases to my time as attorney general of California and partnering with tribal leaders and child welfare agencies and law enforcement officials to enforce ICWA. I will tell you, as I stand here as vice president, the President Biden and I remain determined to work with you with native leaders to safeguard the protections of ICWA. Some had attendee Monique baker, governance administrator for the tribal government of St. Paul, Alaska, says she feels comforted, The White House is acknowledging the challenges tribal families face. It gives me comfort to know we have someone like vice president Harris in this position, who's not only acknowledges what tribal families went through native children being torn away from their families and the trauma they endured and knowing that something is being done to make sure this will never happen again. It's truly amazing to hear all this during the summit this year. And I look forward to hearing more next year. Harris made the comments about ICWA as challenges to the decades old law intended to keep native children with native families was recently heard in the U.S. Supreme Court. On Thursday, tribal leaders and top federal officials hosted a number of panels at the summit, including on healthcare, baker says she's interested in information and discussions about extending healthcare after childbirth. Baker says providing postpartum care including depression screenings is a huge step in the right direction for native families. That means so much for all native women. I mean, as a mother, myself, I wish I had that coverage. I wish I knew more about things like that. The two day White House tribal nation summit concluded Thursday with topics ranging from veterans issues to a special message from astronaut Nicole Mann, who's currently in space on a mission, the first Native American woman to go to space. The interior department is putting $75 million toward community relocation efforts for three tribes in Alaska and Washington state that are struggling with the consequences of a changing climate. We've never really done anything like this before. In this country, particularly for tribes. Brian Lynn is the assistant secretary for Indian affairs, he says the interior department hopes to capitalize on some of the progress new talk Alaska has already made and develop a blueprint for the federal government's future response to climate change. You know, we want to make sure that we are gaining experience on the federal side of things working with tribes to do climate relocation work. Newland says the department wait a lot of factors in deciding how to allocate the money. We evaluated a number of communities that have gone through some of our climate funding programs before. And we waited a number of different factors like readiness need existing plans as well as our ability to glean lessons learned. The tribes will also receive funding from the federal emergency management agency, 8 other tribes across the U.S. will share $40 million to assist in planning for climate change mitigation. "Welcome back to Bloomberg technology SpaceX launching a manned crew of four on a NASA mission to the International Space Station, including a Russian cosmonaut and the first Native American woman to travel to space, our Ed ludlow back with all the details. And what exactly happened today? Yeah, so we're deep into a 29 hour journey to the International Space Station. As you said, Nicole Mann, one of the crew members in fact the crew commander becomes the first Native American woman to go to space. So it's a landmark in that respect. She is a member of one of the round valley Indian tribes here in California. But there was also a Russian cosmonaut on board. It's the first time SpaceX is carrying a Russian citizen, a Russian cosmonaut from U.S. soil to the ISS, and as you know, and we've talked about this week, some of the controversial tweets Elon Musk who is the CEO of SpaceX made about the war in Ukraine and about his belief about it negotiated a settlement with Russia that it's going to take them 29 hours to get there, talks me in the next show and we'll see if they made it safely, but this is a kind of routine operation for SpaceX, right? It's their 5th crew mission, their 8th or 9th human flight mission and it takes the crew to 250 miles above the earth. So how does this fit into then the broader mission and the other things that SpaceX is working on? Yeah, I think what SpaceX is really doing in conjunction with NASA is ramping up to go beyond the International Space Station. They're involved in the project more broadly to go to the moon, but that relies on a different company's rocket, Artemis, and as we know, that is behind schedule. We don't expect SLS and Artemis to launch into about mid November. The next kind of big mission for SpaceX in kind of advancing human space freight is Polaris dawn and through the Polaris program that they basically are going to push the boundaries of what they're capable of doing in terms of how long and how often humans can go into space, but a part of that is contingent on the development of starship and what we're really waiting on from SpaceX's news of when we'll get that orbital test flight of starship because we don't know when that will be. And we've talked so much about Tesla and the impact on Tesla with Elon Musk taking over Twitter and less so about SpaceX since it's a private company. But what do we know about how folks at SpaceX feel about Elon Musk taking on another big company? Yeah, I mean, generally speaking, Elon Musk has also been divisive within the ranks at SpaceX, right? There are many employees that do not believe in some of the things he's said and disagree with some of his actions. There is also an element of key man risk. You know, Elon Musk is a hands on manager and executive at SpaceX in much the same way that he is. It Tesla, he often attends some of the key launches. He's often present in Hawthorne, where SpaceX is kind of headquarters and R&D center is. So there is a question. If you takes on Twitter, what does that mean with respect to how he splits his time between those three companies? But as we know, he is a man that spends a lot of time on a private jet, a lot of time on his phone and doesn't sleep as much as the average human. All right, indeed, Ed ludlow. Thank you as always. We'll be watching for the results of this latest mission. And that does it. "Listening to native America calling. I'm Sean spruce. Today we're highlighting some of the work that native people are doing at the national aeronautics and space administration, more commonly referred to as NASA. We also want to hear from you. Is your tribe have stories about space? What are your thoughts on some of the accomplishments of astronauts like Nicole Mann or some of the engineers working at NASA? Give us a call by joining us at one 809 9 6 two 8 four 8. You can also call one 809 9 native and we'll get your comments on the air. Let's go back now to Aaron yazi. He is an engineer, mechanical engineer and the jet propulsion laboratory. He's up there in the Bay Area in California. And Aaron, let's go back a few years. How did you first get your foot in the door at NASA? I think I took advantage of a lot of summer programs when I was growing up in northern Arizona near the Navajo Nation. I think that's the kind of thing that helped me figure out that I was not only interested in engineering and science, but that I was like a smart student and it helped me realize really realized my capabilities and helped me break out of my shell. And so I kind of use those opportunities to jump from one to the other. It led me to Stanford, where I got my bachelor's of science and mechanical engineering, and while I was there, I continued to do stuff over this number. So I took advantage of an organization called the American Indian science and engineering society aces. And they had a lot of opportunities. I had a scholarship to them for college, but they also had an internship program. And I was through that internship program. I was able to work at NASA Goddard space flight center for summer. And then I also worked at NASA Glenn research center for summer. So I think having those two experiences on my resume really helps, like even though my grades at Stanford weren't the best, I was not like the thriving student that you can that I was sort of plucked out of my small hometown and had to sort of catch up and make it at Stanford, but I think regardless of my average grades, I also had leadership experience on my resume and I had those two NASA internships, and so when I went to the ASUS national conference in my senior year, they have a career fair there and that's where I met the recruiters for NASA JPL and got my interview.

"It's 88 in Centreville 88 in Washington. Add one 40. NASA's new moon rocket Artemis is set for liftoff tomorrow. It's part of an ambitious project that aims to land humans on the moon and then maybe Mars. Artemis two in 2024 would be a crude flyby of the moon. Artemis three sometime this decade would be the first moon landing since Apollo 17 and include an astronaut of color and a woman still to be named. Astronaut Nicole Mann admits, she looks at the moon differently these days. Especially when you're a ten year old says, mom, do you think you'll walk on that one day? And I say, I hope so. You know. That report from CBS Mark strassman. And new army program gives lower performing recruits up to 90 days of academic or fitness instruction to help them meet military standards. The Associated Press reports the program is one way the army is hoping to fill the ranks as it struggles with recruiting efforts that are expected to fall dramatically short of goals this year. Army officials have described the situation as dire, some predict the service may fall, ten to 15,000 soldiers short of recruiting targets on October 1st, or as much as 18 to 25%. The army says it will not reduce standards to get more recruits into the service, but will do more to help soldiers make the grade. As we try to save money amid inflation know that scammers are trying to take advantage of the situation. And I would say if it's too good to be true, it probably is. Intelligent CEO Brian Lewis is an expert when it comes to fraud. He says right now scammers are preying on vulnerable consumers looking for deals. "All right, so there you go. So as you can tell, we're going to talk about a story which involves space missions. Yay. That's that voice always sounded that weird and I just didn't notice. Of course I was William Shatner and that was from a voiced has always voiced actually as far as I understand the open that from the research idea that was from 1966, although it's been colorized since. But yeah, he's always had that kind of, you know, space. Now final pimple on somebody's ass. I had to mute my K was laughing, I would say, who is that? Yeah, yeah. So I played that Star Trek open to pose a question. I said, you saw the names of the cast members in there. But what you didn't see was the name of a female cast member, right? Now that show, it's broke. It did break some boundaries. Nicole and her last name is escaping me and she just recently passed away was the first black cast member and also shared the first interracial kiss with also noted from Star Trek. But obviously, you know, in bracken the day, male cast members were promoted over female cast members, let alone a woman of color or a man of color on some of those early series. So now, and I have to switch banks over here, brother. But I thought I would introduce to you. An upcoming NASA mission. Overseeing a new select group of astronauts, who, as NASA says, and I'm quoting now, they're charged with focusing on development and training efforts for early Artemis missions. It's called, through the Artemis program, NASA and a coalition of international partners will return to the moon to learn how to live on other worlds for the benefit of all. Now, Nicole Mann is a member of the Artemis team and here's a bit more about her, but in her
