"I protect myself from a lot of it. So i think in a lot of ways i don't actually understand beyond like inner individual interactions that i have with people. I don't really understand the bigger picture stuff. I'm a little bit afraid to try to understand it. Because i feel like it would be too hard for me to then like be irregular human. Who goes to therapy and deals with. How do you think about yourself as a thing when you're just a flawed human. I don't really know so right now. I'm just avoiding at this conference last year. You were in my jarrett. You are interviewing nigel lawson and one of the things that you guys talked about music. Incredible conversation but among other things you talked about this sort of strangeness of fame and particularly being a woman a woman who cooks in public. Let's say right. The the oddity that surrounds being a woman in public in general the additional layers of maternal ism of sexualization of physical attractiveness of decentralisation that gets layered on top of that and shortly after that you became an explosive overnight television star for where how do you. How do you wear that Someone who tweeted at me about our conversation. And i think i agree with this. You are an object of thirst now. Oh well you did that. You'd last week you sent me. I was on an airplane. And when i landed and turned on my phone i got this text from helen and it said like. Allow me to be the fiftieth person to send you this and it was a tweet. What nicole class nicole cliff wanted to set you up with chris evans and i was like. Who's chris evans. I mean this is. This is the national. Discourse is like there is a significant percentage of of the american population that ships you and captain america which is hilarious. Yeah like like how does that feel. How do you wear that I i don't know that. I think about that part it what i am able to process and sort of have to think about and figure out how to deal with because it's a part of my everyday reality now. Is that people feel like they really know me because on screen i was me and i think when you watch chris avin sunscreen and you see him on the street you don't think he's a superhero. You think he's a human who has a lot of money or something. I don't know i don't know what you think about him. But you don't feel like you know him and with me people really feel like they know me and in general i will say the interactions that i have and what's come at me has been overwhelmingly positive and it's amazing but it's still a lot coming at me and i'm also a person who is grumpy and goes to therapy and i don't know it doesn't do my laundry enough or whatever you know. I'm just a a person still and all of a sudden. I'm also something that means a lot to people that i'm not that isn't me. It's like a puppet of or something you know. So i'm trying to reconcile what that means. And in a lotta ways. I'm mourning the loss of my anonymity and that's a really sad thing to lose And also there's a lot of power like really awesome power. That comes with this that i'm starting to realize the extent of you know with the kosher salt thing that happened in january evan. Climate from good food emailed me and she was like did you see and she linked to this tweet on twitter saying that diamond crystal kosher salt which is my favourite salt. That i recommend to be ball was no longer going to be produced in these three pound boxes and i was like really. That doesn't seem seems kinda crazy. Like why would they cancel this. And maybe they're just changing the packaging and she said no. This person called in check. And i was like well. I'm going to call and check. It was the weekend. So i was like. I'll call and check on monday. And then evan she sent me a note she just had a response for everything so then i was like i started to get worried so on sunday morning i went and wrote. Why diamond crystal y. That was the whole tweet. And then the whole twitter like panicked and bought all the salt on amazon and it sold out and my and then i got text from people who had like walked ten blocks in the snow to buy ten boxes and i heard kristy tuygan like two cases of salt. You know like posting pictures of. They're like they're like shipping. Slaps they were hoarding assault. And i had taken twitter off my phone. And i was kind of like on vacation and so i close my computer and i left for the day and when i came back nine hours later like my agent had texted me and said like oh thank god. Salt gate is over. I was like all i did was send one tweet and cargill which owns diamond crystal had responded and said. Don't worry that was a rumor vicious lies and then there were like and then the whole and then the next day the new york times ran a whole article about it. I was like you guys really have nothing else to report on your the news guy. I'm really bananas. it's rare i. That's very weird thing to understand but also there's so many good ways that it's it's showed up you know like the the soy sauce from the show sold out globally in twenty four hours. And that's a guy who's on the verge of going out of business and the women. The honey beekeepers from mexico indigenous women they. I was particularly concerned about them and wanted to make sure that. They profited in some way economically from our being there and it was really hard to do that because they just work with his dinky little nonprofit so i hired someone to try and figure out how to set up like some sort of website to sell their hunting. 'cause i knew people would want it and we couldn't do it in time for for the launch of the show and so we did get like a donate button up and some people have donated money and then one of the viewers just randomly emailed me. He went down there. He is setting up a fair trade type organization to work with them and import their honey and sell it in the states. And i have my my my spidey. People are watching him to make sure he doesn't take advantage of them. But like it just to see the i sort of did this thing and then it has this ripple effect and it can be a positive one makes me really excited and allows me to start thinking bigger about what what else i can do. It seems one of the threads running through salt fat acid. Heat the show. And you've talked about this a lot. In the course of promoting the show and giving interviews has been what i would describe as your sense of stewardship that being put in the position of being at the center of what is effectively a massive multi-media ecosystem. It's been really important to you to not be the only person to whom all things flow. So how how did you You know besides having all sorts of folks on the ground in building websites that how do you build that in from the beginning to the work that you do. we're well. I'm starting a company now so And i just hired my first two people. All three of us are immigrant children. So that's pretty exciting. And we're wrestling where reckoning with and wrestling with those questions right now like how do we build it. We don't even actually know what it is that we're going to do but as we figure out. Is we respond to opportunities. How do we make sure that these things that are so important to me. Remain central and so did you watch period and of sentence. Did you guys watch that. The documentary so good. You have to watch it. it's on netflix. Like twenty four minutes long. And it's the short doc that won the oscar and it was made by like all these teenagers in la..

"Who i mean this is this is one of the things that i think is has been dogging me in some respects this who is the you and in this scenario when you say you incubators because i obviously you're not going to be but i'm saying now now who who is the new and why would they whoever the you is why would they do anything that wasn't in their interest anyway i mean i know it's you're just using it as a way of explain it but i think like this is it's it's essentially there was in some respects a a change in the democratic leadership in some respect oh yeah in a in a in a big way out there that great been a few jack of an issue back call the tori democrat by lily guys murder that that entails this process basically and i people you can go back we've i think we've interviewed louis twice on this about the the ascendancy of uh of of uh the the a liberal elite that it was more sort of founded in the against the professional class the pretends right nicole class yeah yeah so i'm that was kind of the rupture what she failed is you know the rupture of this uh this kind of new deal coalition and the way the bill clinton especially um you know forged a different kind of coalition that um you know with much more managerial and technical technically minded is much more based in these kind of white collar white collar constituencies so as she says you know in in in her piece it's all you know it's often argued the democrats have abandoned class politics but that's not actually what's occurred the democrats have just traded one kind of class politics one which at least with somewhat rooted in kind of the working class all it except the new deal um and if civil rights for a different kind of class politics which puts in place the values and interests of a new economy professionals and you know dare politics are the politics of you know what we often call the third way.
