What Charges Will Alec Baldwin Face?
"Every day there's new reports about how guilty Alec is and now what should happen to him and there's so many conflicting opinions. Generally people in Hollywood don't want to blame him. They're trying to blame. And of course, a large part of the blame falls with Hannah Gutierrez read, the armorer and Dave holz, the first AD, who now we found out has made other mistakes on previous movies was fired from a movie for similar type of bullshit with guns. And now we also found out that Hannah read Gutierrez and I knew this from just looking at her face and not knowing anything but who is this ghoulish girl, this new type of young woman with all the tats and piercings, a chunky girl who calls herself a former model, get the fuck. You know, if you pose for one in picture that's a modeling photographer, you got a model. Show me the box you're on. Show me the catalog you're in. Stop with this model. And the goddamn newspapers pull her a former model. Wouldn't she do model socks over the radio? She's a big pudge. She's not a model. And she's not pretty for Christ's sake. Anyhow, Nicolas Cage on the last movie she worked on her first movie, screamed at her because she had done and gone off right near his ear while he was preparing for a scene and he was so pissed off he walked off set and he went to the people who run the movie and said, she's got to go. You've got to get rid of her. Someone's going to die here. He was out of his mind, man. So that's why this girl did the podcast all kind of nervous. Well, I was nervous about it because my first time and yeah, honey, it's your last time too. You're not working ever again in the movies. You're done. You're done. So with that, my legal source told me Alec Baldwin shouldn't escape any consequences, he has to be tried for involuntary manslaughter. That's what he feels. Because he says his actions fit the New Mexico statute law definition for involuntary manslaughter, engaging in a lawful but dangerous act without exercising due caution and circumspection. It's a fourth degree felony, punishable by up to 18 months in prison finds up to 5 grand. That's nothing considering what he's about to face civilly. It's going to be horrifying. But my source like me still believes Baldwin might escape criminal charges. I mean, I think the bulk of the charges will fall on the armor and the first AD, but a civil liability, Baldwin could get hit pretty hard for negligence on a wrongful death action. It's going to cost him dearly. I don't know how they're going to put their lives back together and then again, him and hilaria, it's going to be a while.

'Windtalkers' Focuses on the Wrong Story
"But the big problem is, yeah, there's no story is so all over the place and it's so misjudged in mister focus. The focus of the film should be on yazi and whitehorse. They are secondary characters in their own movie. And so Roger Ebert said that the filmmakers have buried the film underneath battlefield cliches and centers center of the stories on a white character played by Nicolas Cage. So this is an important story. And I think was intention was there. And the screenwriter's intention was there. But they didn't execute at all on the right story. And in the right

"To me, yes. Look, you can not, like, we have a lot of critically acclaimed great movies to choose from. But you can not discount the movie that is the big, huge, Hollywood blockbuster, four quadrant film that everyone loves and talks about in kids still watching school. Do you can't do a Nicolas Cage rewatchables and say that national treasure, a $350 million grossing film. That I certainly did not expect to be good. When I sat down in the theaters to watch it, it was strictly off Nicholas cage allegiance that I was there. And the movie is a good movie that makes a shit ton of money. I don't see how you believe it out of his Hall of Fame. It's agreeing to me. A green? Not even, this is green. National treasure is a green. National treasure is a great the Nicolas Cage whole thing. We have green. 6 greens already..

"There's no common moviegoer to me anymore. I think the commie movie, the common moviegoer is dead. And I think what's happening now in a lot of these economic and cultural shake ups at different streamers and for the studios is that they're realizing that. And in realizing that they're trying to figure out a way to tailor their content to overlap the quadrants as much and squeeze out what's left of it because the reality is that with when all of these different studios basically crude up when they all basically crewed up and was like, okay, come over here and have this streamer for all of this stuff to this streamer for all of this stuff. Come to this streamer for all of that stuff. They have more than anything, what that made you do is it kind of bifurcated the trifurcated, whatever separated the audience out to where people go to whatever they want for whatever they want. There's no actor that this movie is like, this movie could be made with other than Nick cage. And I really don't think that there's an actor that this movie is intense hit with. Because I think moviegoing tastes and sort of rhythms have changed in a way. You know. And I don't think it matters. As much, there's a great, it's a great weekend for movies right now. Everything everywhere all at once is in theaters, the Nic cage movie is in theaters. There's a lot of non comic book fair that's a theater right now for people to go see and a different palette, sonic two was fucking great, right? So in a different palette for people. And outside of, you know, some of the IP stuff, they're not really doing crazy gangbusters because, you know, I don't know if people think that a movie about Nic cage in this way is something that you leave your couch to go see. Yeah, I wonder, I wonder if this movie had come out in 2006 instead of in 2022. If that would have been different, not just because the box office was different at that time, but because our perception of cage was different at that time. Maybe this is an entree into a bigger conversation about the man because he's been through so many cycles of understanding from the audience's perspective and made so many different kinds of movies that I think it's possible that for people who are not paying close attention that they have just accepted that Nicolas Cage is a guy who.

"I'm Sean fantasy and this is the big picture, a conversation show about Nick cage. Today we're discussing the new meta action comedy, the unbearable weight of massive talent, and its self parodying star Nicolas Cage who plays himself in the film's sort of, joining me to talk all things cage, and help me construct his Hall of Fame, two very busy men right now to cage rangers, rob Mahoney in the middle of the NBA playoffs, stepping off the podium to come hang with us for a little bit, and van lathan. Soon to be published author a vat crazy and tired, co host of higher learning and the ringer verse and all kinds of stuff, guys. What's up? Good, what's going on, man? This calendar invite wasn't for all of us to go trip asset together in Majorca is what you're saying. I'm so sorry. I'm so we're not doing that here today. But maybe in the near future, maybe when the playoffs are ending in the pub week is over, we can all get stoned together. But now we're talking about Nick and this new movie before we get into the movie. You know, van, you and I were on a pod about a month ago and you were like, whenever you do a Nic cage episode, I have a lot to say. And I earmarked that. And lo and behold, literally 30 days later, there's an entire movie about being Nick cage out in the world. What's your relationship to cage? A lot of people have other acts. A lot of people have actors that are there like spirit animals, you know, it's obvious that when you do the rewatchables, there's a connection from Bill to either Leo or Matt Damon, depending on which one it is. Usually Matt Damon, but yeah. Normally a mad Damon world. This guy is my guy. Like Nicholas cage is, you know, I have guys who are my actual spirit animals like they represent in culture, like Denzel Washington, Wesley Snipes, but in terms of a dude who I've always looked up and just been surprised by, bewildered by perplexed by,.

"You said, I think he said, he wants that movie to be his own laboratory. And admittedly, there's not much of a movie to hijack, so maybe he might as well, but yeah, a lot of craziness going on there. As far as honorable mentions, we did touch, I think, on all of mine. But I do want to say one more thing about valley girl, which I just love Martha Coolidge teen comedy, very early cage performance. His eyes in that thing are just like the dream bode I eyes you've ever seen on a screen. He walks around like Bambi after his mother died. You know, the whole time. And it's impossible not to fall for him, even though he brings that edge that you've been talking about too, Adam. Well, I've seen a fair number of Nicolas Cage movies at least up until that direct to red box period, but I'm not a completest either, Josh, and besides the regrets, I'll cop to here of two of your picks, honeymoon in Vegas and weatherman. I also still have not seen vampires kiss. Haven't seen kiss of death either or red rock west. Those would be the three. If I had a little bit more time to prepare. I don't know that they would have cracked my top 5 considering the 5 performances I chose and how much I love them. But those are the three I wish I had made time for. I do think Joe is deserving his performance in that film is deserving of an honorable mention. I think the Alan Parker film, Bertie, also deserves to come up here. And then I'd basically just go in order with your picks, Keith. I mean, pig, the highest, then adaptation, bad lieutenant leaving Las Vegas fighting it out for that next spot all great stuff from Nicolas Cage. And now we left it open for someone to write in and say I can't believe I listened to you. Guy's yammer on for as long as you did and no one mentioned the rocks. Or firebirds or guarding tests, there's probably a lot of someone's favorite. Or 8 millimeter. And that's only time that film is going to come up. Not a fan, really, of that film. I believe directed by Joel Schumacher. It is directed by Joel Schumacher. A huge fan of that one either. No. On that note, let's go ahead and close out our top 5 Nicolas Cage performances. Keith phipps are very special guests. The author of age of cage, co host of the next picture show. Tell us where people can get your book age of cage, and where they can follow you. Also out in limited release. How about finally, my number one film of last year, saleen Siam is petite mama, finally, more people could see it Josh and also immediately put it as their number one film of 2021. They need to go see this and interestingly, Adam, in conversation I would say with one of your decades picks, Peggy Sue got married, some similar explorations in terms of parenthood, parent child relationships, actually, when Keith was talking about the encounter with the grandmother, I too was thinking about that film. Josh good call. Out in wide release is Nicolas Cage in the unbearable weight of massive talent. I can't wait to see it Josh and Keith phips recommend it. And Robert agers the northman Josh has already had a glance at it and it sounds like recommends it as well. "How could you put me in this position? What do you think? I knew it was coming. I wanted this to happen. I was completely blindsided. I still don't understand this. You went in there with $500, right? We had this whole discussion. I had a straight flash. Hey, how you doing? Do you know what a straight flush is? It's like unbeatable. Like unbeatable is not unbeatable. Hey, I know that now. I hate this place. Honeymoon in Vegas also might have the greatest romantic comedy reunion scene of all time. I dare not spoil it, but you know this is a staple that is often very stale in the genre and they manage to deliver here with that. Keith now in your book at age of cage, you said the movie allowed cage to deliver a heartfelt performance that lets the comedy come from his characters distress. And I think it's that part of the combination going on here that does put it at number one for me. This one, honeymoon in Vegas, hits the sweet spot. It's my cage trifecta. You get bursts of full cage here, right? You still get the dreaminess of his early efforts, something like valley girl. I mean, you can see why sir Jessica Parker's character has stuck around as long as she has. And then you also get that sincerity, the emotional commitment that arises in his full, heavy, dramatic work. So a little bit of everything here, love rating to see an Arizona, but can't put it above what we see cage doing in honeymoon in Vegas. It's a bold first choice. I like that performance a lot, too. And it's one of two films you made with Andrew bergmann, who I think is a really just his comedy has a very generous spirit to the other ones that it could happen to you, which I like quite a bit too. But it was a comfortable stretch where he was really quite good at playing normal guys or something approaching normal guy. Yes. Jack has his issues with his bomb. And with trust in general, but he is one of the more normal characters in a film that features characters like Sally Mueller's and Johnny sandwich. So, you know, it's a fight before. I like that choice. It's a good one. All right, has the age of cage stamp of approval I'll take it. Well, I may not have seen this movie, Josh, but I did do a little homework and watch the scene you picked. And the signature cage moment there has to be when I think he says I had a straight flush, that's basically unbeatable, and she says something like, you know, will basically unbeatable is an unbeatable. And he sings his response. I think I know that now and cage sings it. It's so great. Yeah, and again, what I love about it is that she's keeping up with him too. Like she's not phased that it's in sync again, right? She's not fazed by the fact that he does that. I think she immediately doesn't she immediately respond. I hate this place or something. Right. It's like, you know, yeah, they're great together and I just love him in it. Those are our top 5 Nicolas Cage performances. Keith phips. Please do the honor and let us know any films that have not been mentioned yet that you think deserve to be mentioned in performances. Oh gosh. I had so many honorable mentions that they were kind of bubbly under we touched on a lot of them. If I had to, I mean, we did not, it was referenced in passing vampires kiss is such a, it's such a strange movie. Screen that recently. And it's kind of all over the place. In places, it's just sort of very lightly stitched together as a film. But I think there's more going on there than just like a weird vampire movie. It is a really good depiction of toxic masculinity before we had that term to label something with. We're cage's character is exploiting white male privilege throughout. And it's also a film in which he thinks he's turning into a vampire and spends part of the film walking around saying I'm a vampire. And there's all kinds of other big moments. He called it a laboratory that he would draw on for future performances. And we didn't touch on the action films at all. I really do think face off is way up there in terms of his performances too, because he establishes really early on what an awful but also sort of joyously villain Castro pollux is and then kind of surrenders that to play John Travolta's character and he plays them as sort of this tortured character who's forced to a good person in a bad person's body who's forced to do bad things and then tortured by the fact that maybe kind of likes doing bad things. I mean, it's really complicated stuff going on beat the surface of that character. You know, that's a really good one. I could go on. You know, I'll throw off a couple of reason ones or from the wilderness years. That I think are quite good or Mandy, which we touched on before. Filming made called mom and dad, which was this dark horror comedy that's also about midlife prices and feeling kind of ambiguous about parenthood, years into having become a parent. It takes a tough stomach to watch that one, but if you've got it, it's worth your time. Josh, what about you? Yeah, just quickly I'll say, I knew this was my chance to see vampires kiss Keith had never seen it before. It is wild, but for me it is one of those cases where he completely hijacks..

"Well, we're going to jump in to our top 5 Nicolas Cage performances, but just one last question Keith, I did see you quote tweet something just the other day and maybe you already knew this, but it seems that the gentleman that you wrote this book about that you've dedicated a good part of your life to studying and analyzing has read your book and had at least some positive things to say about it. What was it like discovering that? So, and I've told this story elsewhere. So forgive me if forgive people who have heard it elsewhere, but I actually had a dream. That I encountered Nicolas Cage, and he kind of expressed broad approval of the project and said he would never read the book. And to me, that I thought was the happiest possible outcome, you know, just sort of like, you know, if anyone wrote a book about me, all I can see would be mistakes and things I disagreed with. But knowing that he likes it is better than that. Honestly, with that, because I don't want to, you know, obviously, you know, it's meaningful to me. It felt good to hear that. Well, let's jump in then. Our top 5 Nicolas Cage performances with Keith vips. You're going to start us off. You're number 5. I went with leaving Las Vegas, and this certainly not a performance I returned to a lot. I think it's a really tough film to watch. In large part because the performance and Elizabeth shoes performance as well is so effective. It is the material is in some ways familiar. The approach to it is not and I just think the rawness and the humanity of that performance is truly remarkable. So.

"To clarify in the movie. I'm not really unclaimed different scenes. Just a small arnoun. I haven't seen it. But i'm toll. What it is is small black and white part where i'm channeled through a cat cabinet. Dr gary german expressionist style. Aluminum face all Leaving las vegas a little bit of gone sixty seconds. So that's all that is the reason why really made the movie was that tom gorman roby terrific letter and i can tell that he was made from a place of genuine enthusiasm and i'm always inspired by enthusiasm and it was a return to comedy and i'm told that when people see the movie they're really going on along with the ride and they're laughing and is. Why isn't nick do more comedies. And i was like well. Hello you're not inviting narrow zone i did. It can happen to you. You know. You know this was like let's go back on and another part my repertoire that i wanna share with people on happiest when what i do makes people happy. "I do think human that stretch from four years that we talked about before was an example of going into my own wilderness. Removing myself from what. I had been doing in terms of big budget movies. I i had decided to return to my roots or not even return all that just go within and to be alone with my thoughts and my books and my imagination and i had very strong connections with my pets. You might my my cat. And i thought i liked. I liked what came out in the script about that. You don't see a lot of movies about the relationships. Between and i don't like the word paddock kicking myself. For saying that fam- animal family members those relationships getting the mindset with them. You don't need words you know what they're thinking they know what you're thinking spy liked the movie. That examining that but really isn't all only about the loss of the pig. It's also there's a much deeper wounded there and that is only hinted at through a movie in a very gentle way is never fully explained. And that's part of the power. That home is the name of the manic elements. That can tell you why i call it. A haiku was that the words seem designed in such a way where the spaces between the words resonated even more. And that's when michael and vanessa brought to it and is all we. There wasn't a lot of direction. It was just good. We went to set. We one or two takes. We were on the same page In sankt well and have you been aware of the response to the movie is do you does that. Get kind of pass along to you. I a friend of mine. Who's also in the industry. Sent me a pretty terrific list Out of new york called thrillers and it landed and really terrific play. So i i like gary oldman said The sound of applause is never to be taken for granted and as always enjoy. I made paraphrase so any kind of enthusiasm. I'm very excited about. And especially when it comes from my fellow actors. You know my brothers and sisters in the thespian. Realm are all my brothers. i a non-competition with them. And i feel i know what it means to bare. Your soul pharma camera. So is whether they know it. Or not i. I love all of them. Were big family last. Two minutes of it's okay. I just want to ask you about looking towards the future now. There was one time in twenty seventeen. I saw you were asked about doing tv. You said quote. I can't do tv. I'm an effing movie star. Close quote which i love because that is the way that it's almost throughout all of history. Tv's been regarded by people who made their name in the movies. But in the last few years it's really it's blurred a little bit a lot of movie people who you know as the mid range. Budget movies are disappearing. They've gone to tv. And so. I wonder if that's something you would consider i. Was i tell you where that came from. But i i don't think he would have used the f bomb but what i was also still. Ms used enormous. Bruce lee fan. And bruce lee would go to hollywood parties in the seventies and nobody would pay attention to him. Sadly as being asian and wrongly obviously and and he would stick his hand out and Movie star and. I loved him for that. I thought like japan. Italy and i love that. Thank you also i love. you know. There's something humorous about it. But i but in a way the reality is and you're right many of the scripts that are coming out of tell television. Today are braver and more creative than many of the movies that are being made and got close for tiger. King i got. I got close with joe exotic rather that was the title. That was a fascinating character. I think the real reason why. I'm traditions about television. Possibly wrongly even though it was a television king. george slaughter. Who discovered me is that. I'm afraid of being trapped. I'm afraid of being stuck in one. Plays with one group for years and years and i i have to move. I have to find different people to work with than go to different places and different characters immersed myself. And i think i would be very would be is i feel still did or or or stifled If i was on a chauffeur's three years playing one guy. One guy. Only i i do love movies too much and i i. I am proud. That i can say i'm a movie star anymore. Oh my ears are some people that were pretty. They certainly had their edge. You know but i. I think i was more when i got the star on the hollywood. Walk insane i. I told little story a massive talent. Which i shouldn't give away but i made it on. The spot is true story. But remember thinking to myself as a child growing up in hollywood visiting hollywood looking at the sidewalk in hollywood boulevard in the sparkles in the street and all the movie stars and i was at the time we were during saturday's everyone's talking about the nuclear threat and russia. What could happen. I thought well if a bomb at really went on. I guess maybe maybe if i could get a storm hollywood walker saying maybe my little star would be slowly outer space with all the other stars i put. I put that in the mood. That's a true story so when it happened i was really. I was really thankful so. I'm glad it's there and you anticipate the final question. Which is about this movie that. You've referenced times it's the full title. I believe the unbearable weight of massive talent. This is a belief set for next april. And the way it's been described this is not my words. I'm a quote back. Please correct me if it's wrong. You play a cash-strapped version of nicholas cage who ends up playing versions of his most iconic characters to get out of a jam. Now you said it's too meta for you even want to watch when it does come out but i guess we did something like this with adaptation but it wasn't you now right now. There's this sense that you know everybody thinks they know you in one way or another clearly. There's a lot of layers there. I don't know that anyone really does get it. Why if it's something that's uncomfortable enough for you to not want to watch. Would you wanna make it in the first place. Well there's multiple answers to the question. I the name of the characters. Nick cage so inadaptation charlie donal. That's a whole new ballgame. When you've got your own day. I made it because it scared me. Scared the heck out of me. And i tend to go within reason towards that which is which scares me as long as it doesn't hurt me or anyone else. I tend to look at the challenge.

"Still with us. How how many movies again. That kind of on again eighty Guy got forty twice as much as me and just was funny. But then i was like oh i thought you know bodnar and cagney. They were doing hundreds of movies in the studio system. Weren't they on that. I think i'm not one seventeen now. And i looked at i went oops humphrey bogart forty movies. James tagging thirty four minutes. Wait a minute. I've got one hundred seventeen what happened. What is the reality is. I like working. I feel good when i'm working. I'm super housing when i'm working I'm always exercising always memorizing. I'm always stimulating my imagination and it's where i feel at my best so and martin sheen wants to me. He gave me the best advice of anyone in hollywood because i was friends with his family and come over and you know the only thing that matters nick is did you like the people you were working with and did you like where you were and at the time i was in my head. I say this to martin but i was acknowledged. Rain was the movie hovering the performance. But when i look back on it he's absolutely right now it is. Did you like the people you were working with. The did you like where you are and that has really become the main way i pick and choose what movie i'm gonna do i talked to. The director is one of my going. That's interesting to me. And i know i'm going to be healthy and i know i'm gonna you know. Bring your stage shape artistically because of because of the practicing so unhappy with the way things have worked out in terms of the big stadiums. I'm not opposed to that. I would. I would sure i'd i'd do it. It's really what it comes down to his script. I'm christopher nolan is the best in the business right now and what he manages. The with big movies is remarkable. I mean they are so complex and so thought provoking so unique. So you know. I can't be a snob zero movie. It's no good that that wouldn't be accurate. Well this brings us to the home. Stretch about peg which i think you know. It's i don't know how much you pay attention to these things but the the reactions to the movie but especially your performance have been through the roof in a way that you know maybe more so than anything in the last few years and i i guess i want to ask you how you feel about that but i just you know. It's not an a script that i would imagine. You know it could. It could have gone a very different way. It seemed the story just to for listeners. Who having yet seen it. And i don't want to spoil anything. But essentially this guy's living off the radar aside from the truffles that are found by him and his peg who his beloved pig and the pig is kidnapped. And how does that affect. This guy i am. Maybe maybe you you should. I should've asked you to do that. You might do better. But i guess. What was it about this that that appeal to you. There's there's a couple elements that went into the decision to do pig and one of them was you know i had explored almost the limits of where i could go with what i would call western kabuki operatic home performance by design boys and body movement and also emotional. Content still emotionally informed. But i thought that it was time to get back to a more naturalistic approach to tone performance photo. Realistic approach to performance. If you will. And i remember. I had a conversation again with father. When i was very young. I was looking at casa paintings and i was like what it might child's mind like this looks like i could do that. This isn't a wired. Both sides on the base doesn't very real kenny. Draw naturally and he said of course you can. That's this is him breaking free. This is going the imagination so for me. It was a chance to show the other side of own performance which i can also do in the hopes that maybe some of my other choices will become more understood as thought out and not just wild wild mess. It's actually from the imagination carefully. Thought out Michael sarno ascii. You know what's interesting is like. When i was going through all the movies staying in shape honing my craft good movies bad movies. Whatever they were. I always knew that it would take a young filmmaker. I never gave up. I never lost vase just like with leaving las vegas. I never lost weight. The young so mega would come and he would rediscover a and he would have seen a couple of early movies or she would have seen a couple of my early movies and they would know what they wanted to do with me. And when i sat down with him. And i talked with him and vanessa block to who also is a co writer our producer. I knew michael right away. I knew we weren't sec and i. He knew where. I wanted to go with the performance. What i wanted to get back to. He was interested in a more quiet approach. More slow approach. And that's exactly what i wanted to do. And she to his credit he stuck to his guns. He did not want it to turn into a john experience. He did not want her to be fisticuffs and guns in revenge she and he did not want the pig to live. He was like the pig nine. There will be no fighting and that took guts. 'cause i'm sure. All the other people with the finances warning to be more of a traditional john webb thing except for the pig. And we should say this is a guys feature directorial debut. It's not that it's a pretty well received. Yeah in that sense now. It's come up in conversation. I wonder if this is over analyzing but could you nicholas cage in any way relate to rob the sky. You're playing who had been and will put spoiler alert at the top of this conversation about both the pig and about what i'm about to say but this guy was a famous chef at the front and center and chose to live a quieter more removed. Life it was his choice. And i wonder. Is there any part of you that got this guy. I think very much so. And i made the parallel myself. I.

"Still among young campbell And then. I started getting very interested in zoology. And the stories that people came up with to help to cope with life and i went on a kind of grail quest of sorts. And so for me. I had to prepare vessel. That was so clean. That i could face it that i there was no room for drinking. And what's more. I hadn't meditate when our day three times a day to try to find the. I don't want to go to form the esoteric but the inner circle within my own be. Was this something that you figured out that you had to go about this or were you advise like how does that. I wanted to do it for me. But i had a philosophy teacher. She's no longer with us. But it's just strange that my father and my philosophy teacher died the same year. So i'm still kind of wondering about that but she was helpful to me And she would give me books to read as well and tell me to go to places in iowa go and research. I went to glastonbury It was a very often electrifying time. Because i was. I was totally immersed in my imagination in my studies. And i somehow somewhere along the way stopping interested in seoul nike and i started being interested in a life of contemplation. That's you gotta you gotta. You can't just go into that and not hitting the bills. It's there were. There were members in the fire that needed to be sad. And i you know and i realized that. I didn't think anybody really wanted to watch a priest. Mediterranean on mountain. I thought people were more interested in the in the orangutan jumping around in the cage. I thought well that seems to be what who what makes something exciting in terms in sometimes in terms of human behavior it's it's fascinating to watch But not always. Sometimes we do a little bit of everything. But i realized that i had to get back into life not remove myself i i had to get outside of the meditation going deeper and deeper into the inner circles which i do think helps in terms of film performance. Now what. I did as an exercise then but i had historic reconnecting with reality with society again in with simple communications and socializing and going to rush going to dinner. Having a martini had adding meeting people talking all that now. When you came back to making films did this shape the kinds of things you are now interested in doing because it does seem to be a bit of a market change somewhere along the line where i think the last big studio movie may have been go schreider which is about a decade ago and since then it's not that i mean you've you've certainly as you talk about you know you work hard all the time and are doing all sorts of things but not going back to the big studio kinds of movies that you had done before. Well i think it's a little bit of both. I mean sorcerer's apprentice didn't really land the way they had hoped it would land by the way i think national treasurer was a massive head. And i don't. I don't know why they never made a third one but to me. That's a swing and a miss but I the first movie up after that experience. We just talked about with joe with data. And i think well actually no bad lieutenant. I was doing ballot time with verne during that whole time. That was the first experience. And i mean i was. I mean i was playing a shoes drug addict in that moving. Dry as a as a as a as sunburnt rose in that movie and and You know it. That was my impressionistic performance. How do you recall feeling or something from forty years ago or whatever. I'm trying to bring it back. And then and then design it but there were. I think the work that came out of that. I think it was like yeast was getting the fertile ground. And i i was in a very healthy state. And i was going back in with lieutenant and joe Some of the best their ours. Maybe not long. After andy's in that genres manny was only what was at twenty nineteen so and then and then for whatever happened. And i wasn't the kind of person that was gonna filed for bankruptcy. I was going to work my way through anything. I remember listening to miles davis and interviews. Talking about playthrough playthrough saw my thing was like okay. Let's just keep working and you know find something. I can contribute to each character. Whatever the auspicies are in practice. Let's keep practicing. Stay on camera. Stay focused stay on his own. Stay on said no matter who you're working with bring bring your hunt your one hundred percent and it became thing of all the songs on the record camper great. Let's just get to their great. Just give me two great scenes. I think it was achieved. I look back on it. And i think even the ones that haven't really worked have been there have been great songs well and it's interesting because you've you've brought up you know. There's there seemed to be when people look at the volume of of movies which i was forty two films in the twenty tens It's it's astonishing and there are movies of all sorts in there. But i wonder you know there's people who like to assume that that's all because of financial considerations or different things and then there but i've heard you just you know you as you just said you acknowledge that that's a that's part of the equation but there's also you know when you look at the guys in the studio system in the golden age they're pumping out three three four five movies a year. I thought so. I mean i looked it up. I was a funny story. I was having dinner with jerry lewis and we were buddies in las vegas when.

She really wasn't around as much as i probably. Kurds enjoyed if she stayed at home but she couldn't handle but i would look at her and there were some things that she would do. Some lose reducing voices that she would do watcher. talk to a wall. On balls are talkers. She thought that was really funny. But so these are things that kind of helped me look at the extremes of human behavior and again i think that was applicable to the different paths. I've gone into as a as a performer. That you know what may seem over the top which is not a word i like to use. But it's sort of very often labelled is actually not as far out as one might think having grown up around some behaviors like that so i think both were uniquely informative and not only informative in the matter of what i was looking at as observer but also deeply informative in the mike brown to the emotional content that it was giving me. I think i was my my father even said that you know. My critical thinking wasn't at a level. As you know some of his students my emotional intelligence was a whole other dimension. Probably because of what. I was growing up with. Yeah now how big a role in your childhood was your i. Guess at your younger brother francis Everybody knows about his work. But i wonder i'd read that. There was a period when you were living with him. I think during your teens. But we're you were you guys close was. That was somebody who had a big impact on on what you wanted to do. Well it's an interesting story. One day you know. I'd like to raise script about it in on. Get to your question and answer quickly but the hopscotches. My father was fascinated with blind experience. In with what you can do. In a kind of new world are with the haptic world so ukraine created when he was inventing literally inventing the tactile dome exploratorium tournament san francisco which is dome that walks. You crawl through feeling sponge or rubber fall down a slide into you like two tons of birdseed all these things you try to heighten the sense of touch as a artform form simultaneously angle was literally the constructing the first godfather. And so he would. He would come over and visit us long beach and i know my dad would bring out the red wine in the go cheese and i remember a seen my uncle. They're sitting senior the roundtable. My dad always wanted roundtable a certain that democracy and just enjoying those times when francis visit us and so what happened was somewhere along the way you dad had moved on my mom. They got divorce twelve. Dad started getting interested in possibly romance in another way and so i think it made sense to him doing very well in school. I was beverly high numbers getting straight as he said why. Waiting to live with your uncle So i did. I went to napa and that again was a great experience. Migraines worn is good. But i was in awe of my uncle and i was happy when i was with them even before that i would. I would spend my summers in san francisco. His house with my cousins who i adored and it was always so much fun and we go to chinatown in san francisco and he and an uncle was another one. He was always showing movies yet. A much more grand splashy kind of forum with which to deploy the movies for me to see so yeah. It was awesome. I was like wow. I would look at is always great cars yet. A citron limousine one of those giant mercedes limousine just kinda. It fascinated me the lifestyle fascinated. I thought it was both fun. Exciting and somewhat in the fans zero budget was so out of my reach in terms of what i was experiencing at home. But i think it inspired. I do think an inspirer will after that I guess it wasn't that long. After that stint of living with him you come back to beverly hills high. And and then get i guess a i. Initially the first thing would have been this tv series where you've now got kind of acknowledged to your family that this is something you're actually interested in pursuing and i wonder you mentioned your dad might have had some reservations about you getting into acting what happened now that it was a reality. That's there's a. there's a gray area matt time period. Because what happened. Was i was only staying at beverly because i like my drama teacher john angle. When he was still with us seem to really care about and so he kind of became another father of source and i was staying in because i wanted to be in the drama department. And what happened was i got a call from george george lord productions and he wanted to meet me and i. I hadn't been in anything. I was not in any sort of doing this The best of times. George was somebody who was also kind of like a emba. Sorry oh he had that. He reminded me a little of francis. You beer glasses. And i liked him and he's very passionate about what he does and he does and he was doing wasserman and all these television experiences and he said i want you to be in this hot pilot times in so i did it and they let me out from school to do it and i met another good friend of mine on that he was in a crispin and then i didn't get picked up but i don't know what happened. It just didn't work out alternately. In but i was thankful that it was actually george lauder discovered me first professional now. That was my first professional job. I remember listening to my father was listening through the wall. He was on the phone with at the time. french wise. Angie was saying well you know what's great is. He's going to get paid for. And so i guess on some level even though he wasn't entirely sure about me being a film performer. Because i do the he did again want me to be a a novelist. I think he was on some level kind of.

Today is an oscar winner who has been called by the guardian quote. The greatest american actor working today full stop close quote by david lynch quote. The jazz musician of american acting close quote and ethan hawke quote the only actress marlon brando. That's actually done anything. New with the art of acting close quote. He starred in more than one hundred films. Some big budget studio picks and others indies made for a song. He rarely does the obvious thing whether in his choice of roles or how he plays them close quote. And as vox put it quote among american actors he is in arguably singular defining. His work is weirdly slippery just when you think you understand what his thing is. He does something entirely different. Close quote. i'm talking of course about nicholas cage over the course of our conversation. The fifty seven year old and i discussed what it was like growing up. Nicolas coppola and why even before he was a star. He was insistent on playing parts in unexpected ways that very nearly got him fired from projects ranging from his uncle francis. Ford coppola's peggy. Sue got married to norman jewison moonstruck. What led him to his oscar. And even some best actor awards buzz plus much more and so without further ado. Let's go to that conversation page. They so much for joining us on the podcast and on this this one. We always begin really at the beginning. If you wouldn't mind sharing for anyone who doesn't know where were you born and raised in. What is your folks to living. Well i was born in harbor city. California and i spent the first twelve years of my life in long beach california. My father was a literature. Professor teaching cal state long beach. Mother was a retired dancer. She wasn't really working. When is growing up and that was the beginning again. I had a terrific backyard for some reason that i deeply touched by my father. Build the wooden castle like clubhouse had turns and everything and i spent the majority of my childhood in castle. And i would really imagine things. I guess you'd call it daydreaming. But i rather blissful times in that castle hallowed chair and we'll tell you rolling. My mother would bring me exellent sandwich. Mel's pickles on the saw. I remember i started. Found a shovel restarted digging a hole. I couldn't stop digging and digging day to someone told me you dig your way to china. So i thought i'll try it as i'm talking like forty years old. And then they found the whole massive had to cover up dangerous but yeah. That was my childhood. I could see roots the roots of my jaw literally Roots of plants in all. That's how far. I was thursday while prepping for this a read a bit. More about your folks and it sounds like your dad was also kind of an influential in the sense that he was introducing you to good movies when other people were watching you know animation or nothing wrong with animation but And that your mother had her own influence. I know that there were what i was able to gather there. Were you know she had some struggles. But i wonder if you can just attribute what what do you think you took away most from each of them. Well my father. You're absolutely right. And he was deeply immersed in art and culture and being a educator. It was the best gift he felt. He could get me but we didn't have any money living on future salary. But what the best gift he could give us brothers. I was the ability to appreciate art and to appreciate the movies that he enjoyed and so he would take me to these little art house revival theaters and our impossibly young age. I would just get lost in citizen kane a magnificent emerson's mesopotamia on the waterfronts watching movies. Durham crush away. Tonight was amazed at how drawing to them. I was and then of course. She got me into reading blogs and he told me to be the foreign correspondent that year is. Herman has the door the back in that. I want you to write the missing chapter so you will go in as a foreign corresponding that world war clockwork orange or any of the boats who gave me in and i had a writer missing chapter. I thought he was trying to get me to. Actually i think he wanted me to be a writer. I don't think he wanted me to be a thespian. I truthfully don't but he did think that he could get to be a writer. He's trying to teach me how to think as a writer speed course later Came in handy. Because i did start riding a little bit and sometimes when you need to tweak a bit of dialogue recruiting whatever. I learned from that those experiences with my dad my mother you know. She had seen a movie that she made when she was at ucla and was called. Hell hell no doors. And it was to the very terrifying copy of music that i think kubrick using the shiny and it was black and white shoes trapped in hell and i would see that of course it was absolutely terrifying to sued trajectory. Earn a little screen and we play different movies on that as well but i became aware of her ability.

Congratulations find power. Wherever you get your podcasts from wbz chicago. This is net. I'm greg johnson and ever since jaws came out in nineteen seventy five. This time of year is usually considered summer blockbuster season which makes sense right. I mean why not beat the heat by sitting in an aggressively air conditioned movie theater eating snacks in the dark while watching big loud movie with a bunch of strangers. It sounds great. Obviously movie theaters weren't thing at all last summer. And they kind of are. Now though the delta surged definitely means is unclear again about what's going to happen in movies that were planned for theater releases in twenty twenty one which means we are definitely still seeing the impact of covert on the entertainment industry later in the show. We're going to check. In with film critic robert daniels about his favorite flicks of the year including one. I was quite surprised to hear was actually good nicholas cage. This retired chef. Who just decide to retire the wilderness distrustful pig and all. He wants his piece. That's all he wants. But i here to tell us about some summer movies to check out and which ones to avoid and what the deal is with that full scarlett johansson. Disney lawsuit is eliana doctrine. She writes about pop culture for time. Eliana hello for having me. So let's talk about what has come out lately. What's good for sure. I mean i think one of the films that i have seen recently that i really liked was no law which supposedly the first movie based on twitter thread. You win here story about how Out come along. But if it's kind of a crazy dramatic story a true story about a woman who has sort of this friend ship like falling in love with a friend at first. i see. it's a sweet beginning. I saw this actually just over the weekend and yeah the beginning is yeah like new friend. Crushes or so exciting and they captured it really. Well thought yeah. Very relatable net says the rest of the movie maybe a little less relatable because they go on a road trip together to do what zola. The main character thinks is going to be working at a strip club in florida but then it turns out that her new friends may have a more malicious things in mind. And it's a trip. I mean it's it's fun while also being a little bit dark. It really does this. Great tonal balance. So i would definitely recommend it. I think that it's probably going to be a part of the oscar conversation If not the movie than some of the performances and has a lot to say about race in america and gender and but it's also just can be kind of fun almost like musical esque experience at times when they're just kind of partying and having fun but even more mainstream movies like i saw the suicide squad and that movie is guardians of the galaxy but disgusting like whatever i am assuming the conversation between warner brothers james gotten was you know how disney won't let you do xyz things do all of it here blow up as many heads as humanly possible and then like zoom in on those blown up heads but it is. It's pretty fun in. You are into gross talking animals. That bite people's heads off. Okay the weasel armless not harmless joke. Twenty seven children. But you know it's like. I cannot emphasize enough. How many heads explode in this movie. Okay good to doke. So let's see speaking of weird trailers i've seen. Have you seen the movie old yet. Tell us about that one. Yeah so i am not the biggest m night shaw in curson as of late because i think that you know he has like good concepts that aren't executed a vast i would put slot old in that category I sort of went in thinking that would be a movie about like the forest of like being a parent watching a child grow up too quickly like newsra momentum or that. It's not it's not really trying to do anything except age. These people super fast because just two people who haven't seen the trailer yet. Essentially it's like these people wanna vacation. They find this really beautiful secluded beach and like the kids disappear for awhile and the kids come back and they're like grown ass. Human beings essentially mortals just turned six two weeks ago whatever's happening very funny. You have wrinkles wrong with this speech. I am not the first person to say this but like why is this not international news that like people keep going to the speech that deford coming going. What what what is happening here. The people keep going to the beach. It has a twist as all m night shop movies do that. I won't ruin at the end. That is a little bit interesting but more they all dust is it because they're all dead. It's not because they're all dead but they are all like on the cusp of death because we stop the beach makes sure and being old is inescapable So yeah it's yeah. Throw that into the categories of their some weird movies out. Marie now The concept for this is weird and truly horrified because aging that quickly. I mean that's everyone's worst fear so so kind of a general trend question. One of my friends went to see fast nine probably a month ago now and they said all the trailers before watching fast nine refer superhero movies. I mean it makes sense people who go see fast nine. Probably wanna go see superhero movies But i don't know what do you think like. Are there actually more superhero movies now than normal. What's your take. I mean there are definitely more than usual. There are four marvel movies and we've only gotten one of them so far and in a typical year. I think they're like two or three. So yeah it's a lot. We're halfway through the year. We haven't seen three of these movies. All which currently right now are slated to come out in theaters which he d how that works out based on pending lawsuits which we can get into Yeah there's a there is a lot of backup like venom. Is coming out is sort of the sony spider verse movie that they're putting out. Obviously the justice league is coming out there's a fair number of wants to left on docket. Mostly it's these. These big marvel movies that unlike aac warner brothers which just ended up putting out wonder woman. Nineteen eighty four straight. Hbo acts disney hung all of these. Because it really wanted the actual releases its marvel movies. Honestly they probably would have held black widow even longer if it weren't for the fact that black widow sets up a plot of a future markle. Tv show and we can kind of see disney's priorities live right now They really want people to subscribe to disney plus and they're streaming service. So yeah it's kind of become a.

Hose of the smoking of the toad because of the kids and things like that look. Does she smoke the towed in front of the children now. they just spoke about it. This was like she was on a quest. She you know she. It was a different journey with her ex and they smoked amphibian venom. Here's the thing off. And i hate to say this because rich people do this all the time. They always say amicable by the way. No matter if you laugh your ex because you decided that you wanted to be a lesbian. And he decided he wanted to be a monk. No matter what happens there still some strife in that relationship is still upset so if you put on a united front like these two to save the age. Tv show to save their family and put their things aside. You have before you go into that. It's amicable thing. Get all your grievances out on the table. Because if you don't they end up coming i

You Had Me at 'I Just Want My Pig'
"Look, pink is gonna be interesting. Maybe not a movie you see in the theater. But pig is about Nicolas Cage being a former celebrity chef, which is fun. I like a movie that thinks that way. Who looks like a hermit. And everything changes in his life when his his truffle pig, his hunting pig, the pig that hunts for his truffles is kidnapped. Interesting. And the movie trailer begins with, I just want my pig. You know, you had me at that line right there, bro I want my pig. I'm in. I'm

She says they had a good laugh when he told him. Would you guys ever fess up to a story about something like this with somebody. Well i have to say. I don't think i've told my husband this. But i was a fan of mrs doubtfire when we were kids and boy meets world and i think it's weird i i was kind of like playing it cool like i don't even know who you are. Just marry me. You know. And i just i think i don't know if i'll ever tell him unless he sees this. Well i think he's gonna watch out orgasm as doubtfire though did you is that things have happened would you. Lights, Camera, Upkeep
"nicolas cage" Discussed on Lights, Camera, Upkeep
"On the weekend. I seen Utterly terrific or whatever. Obviously that's not the title A whole i heard that a scathing look into the dairy industry. I've heard that too. And then they go and they watch it and then they're like talking to the next day at lunch so you you watch that movie. Yup it was good like two turns out. We don't have to be uptight about everything we can see funny movies. Yeah it was really funny. I have a potential title to two versions. ones curdled. earth or curdled ground. One is a play on scorched-earth ones a play on fertile. Ground and ground. Sounds better i. I like to curdled earth to aliens or going back in time because there are trickling somewhere else because they ruined their world. Right there we go. It's curdled earth good one good job damn okay so those are movies that we've made up this week again. I don't have an agent but net flicks or hollywood anyone. You can contact us. We've got ideas. We could take the dumbest shit and turn it into a workable movie ideas. So imagine if we weren't doing this for just an hour and a half and this was our full time job and we actually took these ideas we ran with them. And i'm like can we get nick offerman and someone's like fuck. Yes you can. I feel like right now. We do have like three. That we've created from back pocket pitches. Which wouldn't wouldn't be like. I feel like a waste of time. Until pursuing further in total will some of them. Okay this milk one. I think could be a great like south park or snl sketch okay. Fair but what okay. So best buds. Of course always active best buds. Great i think the the mockumentary about adventure racing. Oh yeah hundred percent and obviously there's a lot i think i would say probably like sixty percent of the ones we come up with. If you actually gave us a weekend to flush it out and not just try to make him for comedy reasons. They would be good. And then there's like a thirty percent words it would require a lot more work and then we'd like our classic like ten percent that's just like that will never ever be made and no offense. I think like mt g t g is one. I was watching it. That doesn't mean. I think it'd be marketable black. You let me think it'd be a parody like i think this milk one could be a movie if like you gave. We gave more time to like work into it. Actually flesh stuff out. Let me give you one solid thing that i think we're both becoming more aware of over time. Our pitch for a fast and the furious christmas movie would actually be like among the better fast and furious movies. I don't know if that's like a lame i- hundred percent think are fast and fierce. Christmas movie is a great one of ours yet. No one hundred percent i would. I would watch it will also. I think it would be a great. Like bob's burger or like some animated comedy episode anyways. That's going to wrap it up for this week You can check out our other south in the links below. You can join us next week when we'll be talking about something talking about something. I don't think we have a topic set yet. Nope it'll be godzilla. Because i'm going to talk about nothing but godzilla for the next few weeks and we'll just have to deal with that. That's not actually going to be the topic. Come up with something but we'll see next week. Thanks for joining us. I hope you enjoy real movies. Just keep writing in. Someone will eventually notice your dumb ideas. Aren't that dumb..

Let's hear it is a thing of great wonder quivering with complexity strength and resilience however also buried with them. A delicate femininity and there are even say nuttiness look one way and you see a gentle feline innocence with another way homeboy. Yes it has the power to steer our souls an intoxicated. our minds men have died for it. Women have moved in with each other way too soon for it and to fully capture its essence. We must plunge unafraid deep within enchanted garden. Roll my friends. We are so close now. Fisher is upon the very house of life and death the temple of sexuality and a term for that kid too afraid to play dodge ball in gym class behold also could be a cat now right so that sold me because it was weird weird. He's guest stars on this show called. The history of swear words will include comedians like D'auray davis mike eagle nikki. Glasser pattie harrison. London hughes jim jefferies. Nick offerman sarah silverman and isaiah woodlock junior. So i'm in. Are you in. So i again. Nicholas cage freaks me out a little bit. I don't know why he's i. Think of nicholas cage in the movie face off with john travolta that movie very strange do nocholas cage and then was the movie was called leaving las vegas where he's like this evening drunk. Yeah yeah yeah. Elizabeth shue might be right. Yeah nicholas cage kind of freaks me out a little bit. 'Tiger King' zoo closes after feds suspend its license
"And I promised you a little bit of news on the Tiger King. Which Tyre King News. Well, I know we love it. I mean, anybody who hasn't who Hasn't watched it to yourself a favour and do it. I mean, the first episode you go. What am I doing right? By the second episode, you're just kind of sucked in, and this was a huge hit. For Netflix. It was a documentary about the Tiger King Joe exotic and apparently the zoo that was featured in that documentary, Victoria. Announced late Tuesday that it is closed to the public. And can you imagine what that was like? After the federal animal exhibition license was suspended? The U. S Department of Agriculture said that it suspended the exhibitor license. For Greater Winwood Exotic Animal Park and Jeffrey Loh Hu was featured in the Netflix series on Monday. Both low and Joe exotic were among the characters in that Netflix Siri's Tiger King murder may have madness. Opposed to the park's Facebook page announced that public access to the privately owned zoo is closed. Effectively. Effective immediately. The new park will, at least for the future. Be a private film set for a Tiger king related television content for cable and streaming services. Now we know Nicolas Cage has signed on to do this. The report of the U. S is going. Oh, my God. You know what I could for her? I don't have Sharknado in my world anymore, but that's gonna be my name. Sharknado Tiger NATO. The report of the USDA DEA inspection at Winwood found multiple animal welfare violations really serious and Several repeat violations. Among those inspectors found the on ly refrigerated storage for animal food was a broken refrigerator truck that do, officials claimed had recently been fixed. The inspector's asked for the invoices on repairs, and they were handed an invoice for a tractor. Repair in the Facebook post apart, claimed it had been targeted by animal rights groups. Now I believe all of these things are true. I believe they have been targeted by animal rights groups, and in fact, Joe Exotic is working with Peter now from jail to try toe. Tippy toe off to all of these things, and there are according to reports spies in the area. But I also believe that they're probably pretty poor conditions at this part because we saw it in In footage and it's been going on for years. It's interesting. The one of the details which is pretty awful about this, the fact that that these that they've been targeted by animal rights groups Now having this license revoked this. This is actually bad news for the animals because having it being closed to the public means that the animals are no longer subjected to inspections, USDA inspections or pita. So I This is not great news for the animals that Jeffrey Loh Hu if you watch the serious he's sleazy Vegas guy in like the Ed Hardy T shirts with the You know, his wife in the nanny and the whole thing anyway. Sleazeball
