Once he's taken that out once the other big fans know your bigger fan you'll see and that can be used the game so you can never undo that you can even make it detectable so what. I told myself. "To the real donkey like. I was really happy when the real donkey. WENT DOWN! That donkey was a pain in the ASS. What was your experience working with nickless? I Love Nicholas. Ironic because we have to be so adversarial in the movie and obviously. You know the scenes on the mountain or really unpleasant, but. He's just a wonderful person. I just saw them last night for the first time in a long time and Space lit up in came gaming big dog and you know it's like. Sta Very warm hearted. Then, he worked really hard and took it real serious. And he was real serious about his. Accent and He was real nervous when he had that. Big speech kept saying I. had a speech makes me nervous. I find it. You know. Charming? Rather than you know people, 'cause you know. There's a lot of people in that kind of show up. Don't really care that much. But but all three of these kids. They're top notch. Congratulate you on board walking. she? Talking about a guy. I'd never knew where he's GonNa. Come from next. There must have been a blast flight. Yeah. It was fun. You know that's one of. The reasons I wound up doing this because. Jake's. Known Tim Bam. Pat Tim. Tim Patents Known Jason's Jake was three years old. Tim in Patton was. At the premiere last night. And we were talking outside about To See Jake when he was three years old. Here making this movie, but. But Tim's the one who told me like I should read the script and give them a chance and. So I did. So if it weren't for him. Might not be a now. But, yeah boardwalk was. Yeah. Yeah. It's funny. You know it's funny. I feel like got started starting a little repetitive, so maybe it was a good time. Is like how many more times can you watch fan all get? Humiliated. In a bad spot. Space. It's but it's hard for me I. Mean I. Don't you know there's not really align there? That I'm conscious of. Me When I'm. When the Cameras Starts Rolling I'm not me, but I'm not necessarily someone else where. When I was a kid, I was in Star Wars. Like most kids I had that stuff. The action figures in. Kassel they had. A slight to play with that, but. Yeah it's weird I don't really I really go to movies much. I guess you know they say can If you're in the business too long. Comes hard to enjoy going to the movies, so that might have happened to me. Right. Thanks thank you. Take care things to them and. Michael Shannon next role is elvis in Elvis and Nixon. Next stop is writer and director Jake, Paltrow and Nicholas hope who has limb lever. Images of Westerns from my Youth Yeah Nathan actually. The beginning was very dawn of man two thousand one of the landscape. Yes, it does. The cool thing about it is, it's a it's like a very western themed movie, but yet the science fiction elements really blend well with. When you're making, you know getting the story together Is that something that was incorporated early honor. Is that what you intended to yeah I mean I. I try it. Hard to try to make something that feels like we haven't seen it exactly this way, and and I'm thinking about those things all through the writing of. How can we do because I? I wanted to make it a west as a western and wanted to make this classical way in its and all of that sort of in it, but. It's like how can we make it? That might feel. Sort of different and sort of like something happened quite experienced. In an esthetic sense of a world sense and I didn't like this guy thinks put. Allowed people. But for you, it's great, we normally we see you as the good guy so many times. So what was like the kind of play? Someone little darker manipulate. Played liquidated cactus before, and that's always interesting. subtexts well whatever you say, essentially, there's so many different motives what you're actually aiming for and that was. You know reading the script for the first time. I kind of liked the character. and then taken just written some brilliant dialogue, strange style, the and patterns of quite difficult at times type types of speech. But then it would be. a forgotten. WHAT IS GONNA say? There was something else. But Yeah, he did some bad things. But That was the thing I read this. This characters intriguing visit as going on this. There's reasons for everything he does I. think There's also. Love goodness him does. He is trying to do the best he can on the circumstances. Yeah. I, I was thrilled. When I first heard outside this. Is exactly the type of thing I want to do next. Just people mixing up. And he and also a nick mead the character more more complex than he was sort of written. I think he was written as more archerd. That guy does all these terrible things and nick sort of just natural humanity and intelligence really brainless. Phlegm to life in a way, that creates gray area I. Don't think it was totally there, and it's much better on screen them. Probably it was on a page it was. It just depends on. How you look! I I. Is that really does. Love else character and he wants to look after these kids who wants to be like. A father figure anyways? So yeah, there was goodness with an. Someone. Does methods it would give. The motivations are right is just made some bad decisions done. This was the first film normally. I have a guy. The first American accent when I was fourteen and I and I the guy then. Facing the taught me. would be uncertain. Listen and point out if I ever dropped to went wrong. This was the first film. That! He wasn't actually unsettling so a run. The script a couple times to make sure because Katie. There's word that. How many times American accent this! He was pronounced, real strange to Miami. And you're like okay, so you pick out a couple of words that are on. That I, keep you accept most the time. Yeah I feel I can generally held onto it, and then you had those great those few. Who would say a couple of things that would get you wherever you felt like we lost him. You had like a there was a rhythmic. were. Breaking series of words, I say. kind of a sound. Knicks Mantra. Sometimes you'll hear burnt down. She had the same that. We're doing X. men. Walking around my. Interest.

"Yeah Yeah he got his act together. That's scary so trying to do these. Say Like I'm going to try to write x amount of words per day or is it? Going it no, it's a great question. Allen an eye, so many writers have done it. You answer to that and I'm going back and forth it kind of back to my running days, and not allowed to run anymore. Apparently is bad hips like a Saint Bernard or something, but we were always told it was your pace, not the distance, so whatever pays was right for you at that dictate. How dictate how far you around kind of do that with my writing because I. Notice if I get myself a word count H, sheet. All of a sudden, I have a lot of add to use. Verbs and maybe I spend a little too long describing what kind of whiskey Sydney's drinking yeah, it's a discipline thing. I would I would love to have a firm workout and be really. Smart about it, but I'm not there yet. The with the reading tools that you used to it your books. He's like word or Scrivner Longhand I. Use word I wanted to try and longhand because of that whole physical process. They say it really opens up certain areas of your brain, so I shared that with the writer friend who is quite prolific and she just laughed. I don't have time to write Longhand, but I did go by myself a couple beautiful journals speak for. We were in lockdown I'm GONNA try that. People. Do People doing that I wouldn't be able to read my writing though so. Psychic of that Problem Allen. freaked out of there. So you, a fan of thrillers and mysteries in suspense books as a reader before you actually started, write them. I was a total omnivore. I would read anything I mean. I think my first greatest love with science fiction and fantasy, and those were actually the short stories published before I published a novel link for all in that speculating fiction category, but one of the reasons I picked mysteries was because I didn't know how to plot and. And I figured if I had a dead body, and they had to figure out how that Person Got Dad. At least I had a skeleton that I could use. It didn't know that that would also make things more difficult I. I have a friend. Dubber counts since she writes a great mystery series of lighthearted mystery series the lucky books and she then she often read something completely different. She said it's so easy without a dead body. Thorough them thinking is. Do you have the dead body? Trigger it when you start to write like your ticket about the dead body or Oh APPs yeah, who victims I usually decide. Who the victims before I decide to who the killer is I don't know. If MOST MYSTERY THRILLER WRITERS THAT HOW UTAH! I've changed a changed the victim in the into the. Holiday. Oh, I've never heard it that. I teach the calvert I'd never changed the Phantom Yeah Yeah. It should Alain That's interesting. Why do outland changed things? But yeah, how about yourself do you do outlines a goal I have a goal that I am going to outline I. You know the first book I had two years to write, and just kind of let it happen as it happened, and the second bucks only I had done line. And I had eight hundred pages that I cut from that novel because I didn't have an outline did know where I was going and I was just. Trying to get my word count, so but now realizing. With these headlines I really, I really need to be more in control of my plot so now with my fifth book and sort of during a combination of the Hero's journey and Blake Snyder's beats, so that least kind of have. Tent Poles for the fabric of the story. So I've never really done that before. We'll see how it goes looks a sea of the cat the exactly. It's it's great and I. You know they really push that. Remember, this is not formulaic. This is just kind of how people had told stories forever, and there's so much wiggle room within those those beats that. I think it's kind of A. It's not really a paint by numbers. It's just what your palate is if that makes sense. and. So it was it. Oh is a say, so I'm excited to try it. We'll see the the fifth book that Yes. Resin can let me know if it works. Is that also Sydney Pernille, fifth book. It's A. Spinoff actually so a character that I energy in the fourth fuck becomes the main character this book. That's exciting. Mine excited. Yeah, get to do something a little different. We were writing the that character did you right away? Think this might be a good enough. Candidate or did come later well. You know the funny thing about this character, is he? He came into my mind something like. Twenty years ago. What was it Athena out of out of Zeus, had know just as fully formed character, and I, never I always imagined him having his own series, but I never pursued that, and then I saw the chance to use him in gone darkness, so I think the idea was yeah, was there for a long time? And so he's a bit overdue and these to find time to read. I will never give up reading. That was my first love and I'll never get to read as much as I would like, but I read every day and read everything. Yeah I need forty eight hours and every day the. All raise. For to go for the writers that are listening to this any advice given my mice checkered past would say read. A Lot I. don't I don't think people can be the the writer they hope to be if they're not reading and then write a lot, because it's because it's about the practice, we just get better by doing it back in the day. I used to take the books by authors I logged and would analyze them. I would break down the plot on this was before there were books like save the cat or the hero's journey to to help that process I would try to figure out how Awda their stories and I would highlight the dialogue in one color and the answer position and another color in the action. Action scenes in another color, trying to get a sense of balance and I guess the number one thing I would say as to remember. It's never too late to get started. There's a great article called late limbers Malcolm God well. It's an article in the New Yorker, and he talks about people like Alfred. Hitchcock and Mark Twain and Daniel Defoe and Suzanne. "Reader I'll read just about anything. And this was one of those random books that came across my desk and It's written by a a a runaway who became a Modern Day Hobo and that was the first time I knew a that. There were modern day hobos and be that there was this whole thing. Call on railroad detectives, and I found out. They have the same jurisprudence traditional police and I thought well there we go. It's a police procedural. Which is what I knew I wanted to do with the twist. So He's pretty excited about it. Yeah, it's really it's really uniquely. Almost competitive all the other books up there the. Only one that I've ever seen. Different police background. Yeah, it's fun. And so the the your latest book in the series is gone to darkness. She'll be published on June. Second rate that's right and ironically It still has trains in it, but Sydney has been coaxed over to Denver's Major Crimes Unit as a homicide detective, so so it's starts to branch off a little bit there. Those of the gut darkness in the series in general, though bussing deeper, no, she was Marines who served in Iraq mortuary affairs, and when she redeployed, she decided she wanted a job where she didn't really have to interact with with people and so being railroad cop seen perfect trade. You're just out all that all that space. Empty Railroad lines and she could bring her canine partner Clyde. who was a military working dog in Iraq with her? But of course it didn't. It didn't go to plan. And I thought he shows up in the first foot and. It's kind of downhill from there, and and so I guess the thing for me with Sydney and the reason I could not have written her before that while fire was a lot of us after the fire had some pretty strange. Sometimes, we became hyper vigilant. We startled at noises. We had nightmares, and as I was researching not I learned about post. Traumatic Stress Disorder GTS, which of course led me veterans, which also? Also opened a window into my own family. My father was a pilot a B. Twenty four liberator pilot in World War Two and my was pure W in that war, and these were men who never talked about their experiences so once I kind of cross those lines with our veterans coming home now and in what Vietnam veterans went through and the World War Two about sin and his whole thing about. As dramatic stress I had a character who kind of allowed me to work through my own issues by having her workers out on the page, so that's really how she came together and of course her. Situation just gets worse because of what happens in the books but at the same time. She's seeing a counselor she's. She's trying to heal She's working with her dog Clyde. WHO also has post traumatic stress, and then the idea for the fourth look kind veered off. You know I had heard Damon Knight. Who is a science fiction writer said that to each story wanted to bring to kind of separate ideas and I've always tried to do that. I usually have some sort of technical idea. Light rails, and some personal thing, PTSD, and then gone to darkness. The issues I was looking at I kinda got hold in by this whole underworld, what I called the silent workers, and these are often immigrant workers who work at nights they work out of sight of the general public and they're. They're very much at risk for abuse. And then I heard about pickup artists. Have you heard that term the ones they're like? Yeah, the women or something or exactly? Yeah, yeah that whole they call it. The seduction community comedy. You know there's all kinds of on I think some really just it. Almost it's a self-improvement aim. They just want to become better internally and externally. Exactly what he's on. There's a great book call they game by Neil. Strauss, and he went into that whole community and road in Xhosa on the whole thing that was absolutely fascinating, so that of wandered across my dowse assertive across those two ideas then I heard about comics gates, which is a backlash against women in comics, either as characters or as creators, so those three sort of mashed to create this. Latest Fuck I love your holidays. Different things come into your into play. When you start getting your idea, this is for the cool kind of like all. These ingredients came together. Exactly it. Just kind shows you. How crazy my brain and I do remember, there was a movie with vervoordt Dunham junior color pick apart have seen that. I haven't I heard about the one with Tom Cruise called Magnolia, which was with sort of bad idea. Tom Cruise actually features in Neil Strauss's book. Okay, but I'll have to look at that one. Yeah, it's the eighties, but it's I i. don't remember much about it. Yeah I remember. He was a pickup artist. Yeah, it's been around for a while. So these ideas are coming to you. So, how much research do you do you? Do you put into it before you actually start sitting down and start writing these stories? Editor which you too much, just because it slows down my process I love the research aspect and I love. As I mentioned the the books that I've read, but I also love and mercy kind of research, so I've gotten to do ride alongs with sheriffs and police site I've been a victim and disaster scenarios for First Responder Training. I've been a a drug lord for squad training weapons training into the FBI citizens. Can All of that? It's almost as the books are an excuse for me to do the research I want so. When to stop myself as I haven't I haven't mastered that skelly up when you're actually reading under project with reading they like I am not a disciplined person. I feel I feel I feel like I could be so much more productive so I really try to stick to a regular schedule I used to get up. Have Breakfast first thing in the morning non-negotiable? And then I heard Dennis Lane speaking at pen and podium event in Denver and he was talking about. The first thing he does when he gets up is going and right because he's still kind of. Half. Dreaming States and he was talking about reading one of his historical novels, and he was so immersed that you still dream stayed, and and he got up and went to stare out the windows as writers are want to do. And he was expecting to see carriages and horses on the street and it. It was a reality slap. WanNa a truck drove by so i. kind of taken that to heart. Get the first thing I do in the morning is right then I usually break for exercise around the Lovin, then I go back to the book and the afternoon. Then I go for a long walk to five mile walk, and then I read. I. Get my ideas from everyone else I read. Read that John Gedeon likes to pour herself a glass of wine, and that happy hour time and sort of look back on a day's work kind of ponder what she's going to be doing next, so that's that's the strategy I mostly following both used to be working out because you have all these the forbush nine the series so now that I'm always late. The deadlines are the dreaded deadline. Yes, he can chuck Wendy was calling them. Remember their lifelines, not deadlines, but. Feeling now. That's positive. Especially for coming from Chuck, Think.

"You are listening to meet the author. The podcast interview writers Mysteries Thrillers and Suspense Books I'm or host. Alan Peterson and this is episode number one hundred. It's hard to believe that we've hit. The one hundred episode milestone had the privilege and honor of interviewing over one hundred amazing authors in County. I started this podcast interview. My friend in Patterson and it just went from there. I've never thought I would get the chance to talk. Some of my favorite authors as well as covering tastic authors that I might have not known about it if not for this podcast. indie authors hybrid authors traditionally published authors, and it's been a fantastic joyride getting to talk to all these amazing. Talented people have also been able to talk to some legendary thriller and Suspense Authors Like Dean Koontz Tess, Garretson Kyle Mills. The man continued the adventures of Mitch Rapp from the legendary and missed Vince Flynn. Peter may one of my favorites and Indie thriller like Russell Blake Winston and John Ellsworth. Alive from all these authors over the years about writing a better thrillers publishing marketing, and so it's been a blast so far and have more to come ask several exciting recent interviews reported and scheduled to interview several more exceptional writers over the next few months I can't wait to let you know who's coming up. I'll be going back to with the podcast for the summer as long as it doesn't interfere. Interfere too much with my writing schedule goals since son after I recorded these interviews to edit them, so it is a little time consuming to say the least so even though two thousand twenty has been depressing year so far for most everybody with everything that's been going on with covid nineteen and the rest how that started with my former hometown Minneapolis is heartbreaking, but I've always found a refuge in. Love talking to riders of Thrillers Suspense Books and bringing those interviews to you so hopefully they offer you a bit of a respite to from all the ugliness. That's going on out there. So I want to thank you for the sitting sticking sticking around for the podcast over the years. If you're new welcome. And to all my guests. Thank you so much for taking time to talk to me about your books and writing process really been an honor and all right. I'm done with the bothering now. Get on with the show for episode one hundred. You'll be meeting Barbara. Nicklaus. Her latest book gone to darkness will be available today onto the second is the fourth book in Her Sydney Rose Personnel series. On the Zoom I'm GonNa have Barbara Nicklaus for the podcast today. How're you doing? Barbara? I'm doing well here in Colorado. Are You I'm doing well myself so these crazy times. We're just talking before hit the record so hopefully. Everything is going okay with with you and your family. Yeah. We've had to make some adjustments. It's been interesting it's it's going pretty well. That's good good to hear. So, can you tell us about your background the? Leading up to becoming an author, Oh Gosh. I took a really Surkis route to being an author, I, always knew I wanted to write I was three and in the hospital for surgery, which apparently is an ongoing theme of mine and I was getting good welk cards at my turn them over and imitate my mother's handwriting on them, and then make up stories to go with them. so I started out pretty young. But I got sidetracked. Oh, my Gosh! In my life I have a technical writer. I've been Chatham teacher. GonNa sort fighter at the Renaissance Festival here in Colorado, a bird of prey handler in several places here in Colorado I did instructional, design digital equipment corporation. Lot of stuff, and then an actually our house for down in the twenty Waldo Canyon Fire. and. It was kind of that moment where I said I'm GONNA. Do this or or I'm GonNa let go of the dream. And so that's once I got. My family settled and we had a rental house and we had. Beds to sleep on and towels and pots and pans. I started writing. Wow, yeah, I was going to those. Questions, is what led you to to decide to sit down and write the first book, but it was like a traumatic event. Wow! I was literally held to the fire I think. Sign. An interesting process. Oh, yes, yeah, so your whole house burned down like not to. Go. Over bad memories burned to the ground. It did along with hundreds of other homes in our neighborhood. It was so was a freak thing. We didn't think we were endanger on. We've been excavated a few. Excavated that's what I did in my house after we'd been evacuated. A few days before, and weren't really concerned about it so kind of a surprise. Seeing that here in northern California the wildfires. We've been looking here in the city, but so many people have been affected by. That is just horrible. I know Colorado had had some of the worst records, and then the paradise fire the campfire, so yeah, you guys have had it rough, so the first book that you sit down in Rhode one actually ended up being published. Now I had I had been dabbling with us. I have a couple of trump trunks books as I call them. One of them got me. A great agent came close to getting published but ultimately didn't folks that I wrote after the fire was on the tracks, and that was the one that got me launched. First Book published. Who Came Out and Oct Twenty Sixteen. They're really to your to your book. And your character was when I. When I found out that about Sidney perennials background. We'll get to your characters and you series, but. My wife, Father's uncle believe it was. He was a police officer for the Great Northern Railway Police Department. I love it. Killed in the line of Nineteen twenty one so I just remember. Yeah I always report. This is important. In Saint Paul Minnesota, said remember hearing all these all these stories about about this railway cop never really heard much about it. Anything else outside of that. And then I saw your character was one I was like Oh. This is so cool a highly get the idea to make your into Railway Cup. You know it actually started with A book called Hobo by Eddy Joe Cotton and You know I'M A..

"Movies like an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie like the beginning of Predator. Nigger and Carl weathers. They're holding hands for several minutes. Yeah Yeah Yeah. It's an iconic scene is so raw big muscles and all the not a good idea but they both had diarrhea for a week after that. Yeah I mean probably just. That was probably already happening. They were in the in the jungle. Scenario right living off the land now. I did notice that they point out a difference between fist-bump prolong fist-bump. So it was like I wonder is a prolonged fist-bump gonna be more like the snail or some of these these These variations on the fist-bump or or then also we're does. Are they blowing it up at all as they do in the hangar made so many questions? I would imagine the blowing. It up is pretty safe. I don't think any germs are transferred during blowing. It up yeah as long as it blows up quickly. Maybe that's the great thing about it. The blowing it up is a way to remind ourselves that we've got to keep this brief because his hand grenades about to go off. Well I will say my personal prejudice against handshaking aside. If you're going to be shaking hands make sure you wash your hands a lot. Wash your hands before. Wash your hands after. Yeah and and USE SOAP. So yeah because soap again is a fabulous human chemical invention. It has a very long history of very fascinating history so hopefully. You'll all think this is something you can think about during those Twenty plus seconds. That you wash your hands totally all right so we're GONNA go ahead and close it up there You know obviously there's there's more we could have gone into in terms of the certainly the more recent history of Sopa and and so forth but but really I think the the ancient history year and just the basic basic understanding of how soap works with the most important things to focus in on in the meantime.
