Hideki Matsuyama wins Masters to become first Japanese man to claim major title

"Every year we have a new story to tell. At Augusta National, and this time the story is told. Had decade. Matsuyama, the first Masters and major champion from Japan. He wins the green jacket in the 85th Masters at 10 under par for the tournament, one shot clear. American Will's Allah Taurus and Charlie Reimer under a bright blue sky at the end of the day, today hit Deck E Matsuyama as his countrymen. Woke up on a Monday morning in Japan provided them with a moment they'll never forget. Moment he'll remember for the rest of his life. Well, he played with so much pressure on his shoulders today, and when you when you look at the great players that have come out of Japan Going back to Jumbo Ozaki, who got to be a high as number five in the world. But to carry all of that on his shoulders that the nation of Japan and an Olympic year And that If you start getting to the finances, there was speculation that if he were to win today, it might be worth a billion dollars to him and to go out and pull it off. The Masters: Justin Rose digs deep to regain lead

"Justin rose shoots an even par seventy two to maintain the lead here at augusta national. He's followed on the leaderboard by will Taurus and brian harman one shot back of the leader at six under par other. Notables on the leaderboard include jordan. Spieth at five under tony fee now in justin thomas are both at four under some superstars. Missed the cut friday including westwood rory mcilroy and defending masters champion dustin johnson. We'll discuss each of those players day coming up here on the podcast with. Nbc's jimmy roberts. The voice of masters digital justin rose was the thirty six hole leader once before here at the masters in two thousand four. The seventeen year gap of thirty six hole leads for him is the longest gap in masters history. But certainly rose hopes to finish a bit differently. This time around in two thousand four. He finished the master's tournament tied for twenty second and one other interesting nugget of information. There have only been five wire to wire masters champions ever jordan. Speak in two thousand fifteen. Raymond floyd in nineteen seventy six. Jack nicklaus in nineteen seventy-two arnold palmer in nineteen sixty and craig wood in nineteen forty one following his second round. Seventy two justin rose spoke with the media. Here's what he had to say thing. The thing is i was just joking. The fingers kind of heading towards the panic buying a little bit But did i talk myself on on eight. And said you know you still leading the masters and i just change my mindset a little bit and started to play matchplay against the golf course scratcher line on my scorecard and told myself as three down and could i go ahead and beat the golf course from that point on so i had a part in eighteen to win my match. One up unfortunately slip.

Let's let's start where it started on thursday morning. The elder joins jack nicklaus gary player as an honorary starter. And of course he broke the participant color barrier here at augusta national. What's the significance of what happened. This morning i was really moved. I mean i have been to that. Honorary starter ceremony. Going all the way back to gene. Sarazen and sam snead doing it. Lots of times these rituals. I don't wanna say they're hollow but they don't grab you this morning. Did you know it was you. could you know. I don't wanna be overly dramatic but you could see it in his eyes. You know how how much this meant to lee elder and you know looking at him. It made you think back to what he had endured. And what it must have meant to be a black man in georgia in nineteen seventy five and to be the first you know and and it it just made you think about. Business Insights You Should Take Away from 2020

"Powerful insights. You should take away from twenty twenty here. We go number one and this might sound obvious. But we're going to go down a deeper level and that's you can't control everything that's probably the biggest thing we saw in our face every day is that you cannot control everything around you okay. You're on a coffee shop. You can't control a global pandemic right if you're on a software company you can't control if some of your staff members are infected with covid nineteen and you're down manpower. These are things out of your realm of influence. You cannot control it so you might be singled kilmore ghetto. But what's the point. The point is is that you have to recognize come to terms of the fact that in business those things you cannot control and you have to be ready for that. You have to be ready for the inevitable. There's a great book called the black swan by necessity nicklaus talip- the subtitle is the impact of the highly inflammable. If you don't know the author to lab is an investor and he's made all his wealth off the fact that bad things will happen. We assume being sometimes ignore the fact that the disastrous things like the covid nineteen pandemic is bound to happen in our lifetime. Now i know. Tala specifically considers cova to be something we could have avoided rather than an unpredictable disaster but for business owners. The principle still applies for those you in your thirties or forties. You have a pretty good actually We've had a pretty good run without any disasters. Most people go through a lifetime where they've seen multiple wars. They've had to serve pandemics disasters huge national disasters or even environmental disasters but the human brain is not wired to always anticipate this. If you really want to understand how the pandemic really affected economies has really affected your own business and how you could have benefited. If you haven't already read the book black swan it will allow you to put everything in perspective and allow you to utilize this experience so in the future when this happens again because it will happen again. It's just a matter of time when another thing like this happens again. How can you make sure that it doesn't affect your business your personal life but in fact you'll be prepared and you'll be ready and that leads me to number two. You can't control everything but you can control how you prepare and react a lot of people when this pandemic hit they kinda just put their hands up in the air and said you know what There's nothing i can do. No there's plenty can do. Let me give you an example. Many businesses actually saw an uptick during the covid nineteen pandemic because they prepared and they react properly nicole founder and wife has a personal trainer. Her name is amy mitchell and she runs goddess fitness shrines. He's outdoor boot camps for women and anybody who's in any business that is a physical business in person business that has people congregating. You would think kovic would just totally anomaly that business. No amy had the foresight and said hey. I got a pivot. I gotta change. I gotta have other offerings on my site. And she offered online training people training with her Via calls shows the helps them with their nutrition and diet plan and recently Amy shared with nicole that twenty one of her best years for business because she made that change because she had the revenue stream from online clients and when restrictions. Ease a little bit in australia. And things got back on track. She still had her physical boot camps and the line clients didn't leave. They still kept on going. This is a perfect example of being prepared and reacting properly understanding. That things are changing. Something happened something is different now in the world. I can't just do the same things i got change. I gotta react got adapt number three those who make it when it's tough. They thrive on the other end and this became very apparent in countries where the vid pandemic was under control and things started to open up and economies started to kind of go back to normal. There are many businesses. That just threw in the towel. Just didn't adapt didn't change the people that survived that rough patch. The actually now are market leaders are now really thriving because there's a whole lot less competition. There's a whole lot less noise and people who made it. When it's tough can really go on and succeed when things are back to normal when things are easier for the business owner going through something like this is like going through a war. People can't just be business as normal when bombs are falling from the sky. It's a rough time but those who survived and its peacetime again. They're going to become the market leaders for the next foreseeable future. So people that do the first to really benefit those who know they can't control everything so therefore they prepare and they adapt and react properly. The survived that rough patch and they come out superstrong so even if you're in a country where things are still locked down. Things are tough and covert hang in there trying to lower your expenses as much as possible servive because you wanna see daylight. You wanna be there when this is all over you want to still be in business because then it's going to be a whole lot easier for you not only because you know. The challenges are over from the pandemic but because it weeds out the weak. It's like what phil knight says in his autobiography shoe dog. And i'm paraphrasing here. The cowards and never tried the week died along the way that leaves us

Australia has a coronavirus outbreak. What happens now?

"Norman as we've been celebrating darnall days left right and center in ustralia over the past week or so. We've now heard that. Three people have tested positive for coronavirus in south australia. Outside of hotel. Quarantine an eighty year old woman. Some of her close contacts. And then there's other people in her circle that have symptoms and they're expecting more cases to come forward. I mean are we ever gonna know this thing. Well the answer is maybe not going to be with us forever. It just depends on how we control it. So i mean just you know. It's not good for south australia. This happened But we have said on. Chronic has many times now. It's not a question of pride that we've said it but everybody knows it that we're importing people who deserve to come back to australia. Australians living overseas who want to come home and the coming home from high prevalence area so the coming home with the covid nineteen virus and sometimes covid nineteen itself and quota quarantine has got to remain secure for the virus not to escape and we'll only find out as time goes on maybe later on today. What exactly happened inside the stereo and confirming the disney escape from hotel quarantine. The testing people emergency department and elsewhere. So they've just straight go to really move and they are really moving into major containment excise as the queensland for example when cases came across the border and as the due south wales when there was a major coster victoria through the motel and southwest sydney so south australia's chief public health officer nicklaus spirit has called it. A up. call is asking people in south australia to get tested if they've got symptoms but it's not really just a wake up call for south australia. Is it everywhere. I mean people coming into every state. I'm not sure that they started yet. In pretoria think we have but for every state. It's a wake up call and hotel. Quarantine is only as good as the security around. It must be quite easy for the virus to escape if people's vigilance relaxes so it's you. It's a system problem. It's probably not a bad egg or anything like that. It's just hard to maintain day in day out. We can we out and this will probably happen more often and the west australian premier mcgowan. Yesterday's press conference was saying the biggest threat to western. Australia was indeed hotel quarantine and here. It is in south australia.

Saturday at the 2020 Masters

"Saturday at the masters in dustin. Johnson is running away. He carries a four shot lead into the final round sunday. Following a seven under sixty five saturday he was masterful tying jordan speiss fifty four hole record chasing johnson on the leaderboard are sung j. M abraham answer and cameron smith all four shots back while justin thomas and dylan 'fratelli sit five shots back following his round saturday. I called up with dustin johnson. Seven hundred sixty five news. Dustin johnson to sixteen under through three rounds. What did you do well saturday. And what if anything would you like to do. Better sunday I did everything while today. Adrover very nicely head. A bunch of fairways Hit a lot of greens and felt like i. I gave myself good chances on your on almost every hole. and so. that's kind of what you gotta do here. In the conditions. Not a lot of wind you know. Courses is fairly soft so you can be aggressive and Strike in a very nicely today And so you know tomorrow. We'll have to go out and do a lot of the same if i to win. Tied jordan speeds fifty four hole record. What's the balance between staying aggressive and not being dumb Well for me. It all depends on you know. Flag positions numbers Forgot a good number. And and i like the flag is a play aggressive but Like i said the course right now is is very receptive so you know i know the guys behind me are going to be trying to chase down south. You know you can't play you know there's a there's definitely a fine line of being too conservative and too aggressive but you just have to pick and choose my spots second last year. How did that impact your motivation. This time around. I mean yeah it was. I've played well last year. I played while the last couple years so obviously this one tournament that that i definitely want to win and you know. It means a lot to me. A- grew up so close to here and so it is something that i really look forward to until tomorrow is going to be a. It's gonna be a lot of funding. I'm gonna try to enjoy myself as much as i can and Hopefully hopefully outcomes good tomorrow afternoon. You heard dustin johnson say right there how badly he wants to win the masters. It's the dream of every player in the field in this eighty. Four th edition for more analysis on the third round and what to expect sunday. Let's bring in the voice of masters digital jimmy roberts. Dustin carries a four shot lead into sunday following a seven hundred sixty five saturday. He was masterful. Tying jordan speiss fifty four hole record assess his performance on saturday. A great it was basically as good as you could get You know you said it. He tied the fifty four hole scoring record. It is a different time of year. But i don't think it really matters. I mean the thing that sticks out to me is that you know through fifty four holes. He's got two bogeys which is unimaginable. On this golf course and they were in consecutive holes. Fourteen and fifteen in the second round. And when you stop to think about it he bogeyed the second easiest hole on the course which means that by all rights. He should probably expect to birdie the fifteen th hole. You give him two more strokes and he's just farther ahead of the pack. But i will just say this. I was here in nineteen ninety six and i covered that masters where greg norman had six stroke lead and nick faldo came back to win it so i mean this course can do things to you i mean. I think that there were extenuating circumstances that year. Norman had some physical difficulties. That didn't manifest until the final day and faldo played effortlessly. I think he shot sixty seven It's gonna take that for somebody to beat him tomorrow Somebody's going to have to play really really well. And he's going to have to stumble. What is it about this golf. Course that suits his game so well. Well i mean at this point really. He's the number one player in the world and he's as they like to say in europe he's on form so you know. He's a finely tuned engine right now and He's not even close to the red line. So i mean he is just got it all going on right now. I mean he's you know. I always say that you know. These are the best golfers in the world on on a week to week basis. You know you shouldn't be surprised if somebody you've never heard of comes up and wins a tournament because they are all remarkably talented. But he's the best of all of them right now and he is playing really well You know we've talked about this over the last couple of days. He you know he's long and straight which is tough to beat and then a couple of years ago. He decided that in order to get better you had to work on his wedge game so he went and did that he's become a terrific putter and he's completely unflappable. He i think. And i think that's the most important thing i think he's a guy who just does not get undone by much. I just asked him a few moments ago. what's the balance between maintaining the aggression. That got you here without going too far. Yeah i'd i'd be curious to know what he said but in all honesty. I've never seen him loses. Temper made him. I've never seen him hot. I've never seen him running hot. I'd seen him disappointed disappointed. And you're not going to be able to see this on the podcasts. But you know it's just kind of an shucks wish i hadn't tripled that whole crazy when i do. Something you know like that He's really he's a talented man. Who's in stride right now and You know he's done a lot He's one everything but tons of majors. I mean he's tiger tiger woods. He's one in to start his career. He's won thirteen consecutive seasons to start his career. Only tiger woods is done that and he tied him tiger actually one in his first fourteen seasons. But i mean he just consistently wins you know and it's hard to beat talent you know and worth work ethic when you match those two things together. It's very difficult. Let's look at the leaderboard. That is chasing dustin johnson song j. m. abraham answer cameron smith all four shots back. Justin thomas and dylan for tally. Five shots back if you were going to pick one to catch him. I don't think there's any question. The person who watches is Is justin thomas. But the way sunday m is playing and things are different now than they used to be. You know it's been forty one years since a first timer has one here that was fuzzy zeller nineteen seventy-nine. You know i was with the jack nicklaus this morning doing something and He talks. Jack came here and he didn't win for the first five times that he played here. But this is a course more than any other course were experiences necessary. But look you've got answer and in two players who were here for the first time in their you know right nipping at his heels Sebastian munoz too. So i i do think that must not be worth as much as it has been in the past given the level of talent and work of these guys but you know you give me a guy who has the experience and a guy who doesn't of equal talent and at the same spot in their game. I'm gonna take the guy with experience at this place every single time. Rory mcilroy and brooks koepka. Both superstars both at eight. Under after three rounds. How plausible is it that they might contend on sunday. I think it's entirely plausible. I mean i think that you know mcelroy's trending in the right direction after that seventy five in the first round which was disastrous for him. Just can't seem to get out of his own way sometimes but he's got a game. That's ideally suited for this place. He hits it high far and straight. His natural shot is right to left You know he's been number one in the world he's not undone by these big situations. Generally i think he's going to be a very interesting guy to watch tomorrow. But in all honesty there's so much daylight between dustin johnson and the rest of the field at this point and it's not the daylight of four strokes. It's the daylight of four strokes with the number one player on the one side of that daylight. Who's playing well. And i mean. I think it's gonna take dustin johnson shooting seventy two or three tomorrow. I mean i suppose it could happen. You know greg. Norman shot seventy six. Nick faldo shot sixty seven That lead had evaporated by the tenth. Tentpole the eleventh hole So you never know. But i would be. I would be shocked. But i remember being augusta national in in One thousand nine hundred ninety six and remember all the stories that we were doing. And i did a story for. Espn that night. And i said you know it would be shocking if greg norman didn't win but if he doesn't it will be one of the biggest stories and we won't soon forget it and here. We are all these years later. Talking about it at augusta national right now.

How Bandon Dunes revolutionized golf

"There aren't many golf courses in the world that are better than Bandon dunes but bannon's lasting legacy isn't as a golf course it doesn't idea. That north. America can have true links golf and even better that it can have remote golf courses that can turn into bucket lists destinations. Plenty of course have followed in. BANDON footsteps like cabot links to Nova Scotia or sand Bali and Wisconsin. It's a movement. But it sure didn't start that way. I'm to chair on today's drop zone. Here's how one course in nowhere Oregon turned into an entire movement all by accident. The story of Bandon, Dunes begins with David McLay Kidd A. Scottish. Twenty six year old who had dreamt of becoming a golf course architect but had no concrete path to making that happen. So back in nineteen ninety, four I was twenty six years old and working for the. Detail in Scotland My father was a the golf courses manager and I was working for the development division of. Detail effectively. And I was hating all the Gulf Bar and I was a wannabe golf course architect type I'd done a couple little things but nothing really of any note. And Mike Kaiser Have Franko Rick Summers who's the current owner of PGA Goldman? Zine And Mike said to rick SARS I've got this piece of land on the Oregon coast a WanNa build on authentic Scottish Irish links experience who you guys she'd higher I'm thinking of hiring you know told Vase Your Jack Nicklaus or Pete Dye or a Rick said will you should hire a Scottish golf course architect if you want something authentic in a Mike Chuckled and said, I, would but the old died one hundred years ago. At this point, it wasn't just mcclay kid who was an unknown the Golf World Mike Kaiser was to. He'd made his money by bringing a fresh mindset to the greeting card business decades before need proven to be a smart businessman. But. That doesn't guarantee any success as a wannabe course developer. As an outsider is first instinct might have been a hire a big name architect someone from the establishment to give his project credibility. But maybe he had it in the back of his mind that fellow outsider would be a more proper fit. So he invites David McLay kidd the remote site on the Oregon coast to check things out. and. So I arrived on the state. With my dad. So holding my hand and we will the sixteen hundred acres I remember. Mike Mike is wasn't there. I'd never ma'am yet. He's a caretaker shorty who even then in the seventeenth was our chaperone for the week. So David and his father walked the property with his caretaker shorty Dow and they're thinking themselves. What if you're doesn't know any better? What if he might hire a no name? But shorty keeps asking mcclay kids, business card and eventually he gives them one. In short, he pulls out a stack of cards. He's recently collected mcclay. Kid realizes that every major golf course architect has walked the same site and I realized that might Kaiser was pretty astute and he was he was looking at every possible option as an architect to do this. This set something off in mcclay kid if he's going to be an underdog, well, he may as well act like one. At that point I think I go a little a fire in my Bailey probably because I realized that this guy was never going to hire me I have anything to show I there was no way I was twenty six. So he's going to hire some big name but Hale I'm not going to leave here with my gender my chest I'm gonNA leave with my hailed high. So I went to the local drugstore I bought a dozen sheets of poster board and a few marker pains and I rule what would now be considered a powerpoint presentation. I did it on poster boards with a Marker Pens And Mike Kaiser flew in a few days later in his private jet with some of the executives from Cambridge sports and some of his buddies and I laid. half a dozen or dot com you remember no posterboards that told Mike Kaiser this rich guy from Chicago with a great piece of land, what it would take to build. A true authentic links course in America, and I did so with kind a little chip on my shoulder because I figured with my relatively limited knowledge of Link School Golf in America that there was nothing authentic I was told Pebble beach was a links course doesn't look like it to me I. I was told you know the latest Gulf course by whichever. PGA Pro you WanNa pick a that was in the mountains of southern California was a links course was the farthest thing from the truth. So when I painted I a scenario to Mike Kaiser I said, Hey, if you really want to build a true links course in America years, what it takes and I had a half a dozen points and there were absolutely critical. Such as. You can't have golf carts. There's no golf carts in the British isles, you walk. There's no fancy clubhouse I on the ocean. That's where you put the best green. The clubhouse is back in a corner. The base land is Gulf. The fairways aren't flat. They're pitching in tumbling. There aren't any lakes. There's no babbling streams. There's no car pass. The grasses we use these old style firm grasses van may even have told him there's no arrogation. Can't quite remember what if I said none on a of the bunkers aren't these or MIBA Cloverleaf shapes there these pulp bunkers. Are there to punish the bowl not to Be Up on the week. And as I went through this explanation of links Gulf. Mike had a wry smile on his face and in his. Cohorts laughed openly I load at the ridiculousness of such thought in the sophisticated Gulf market of the United States. I assume that when my father and I left the very next day, we would never hear from Mike Kaiser Regain are crazy Scottish ideas of goal in America were just that while. American. Goal for would traits all the way to the southern. Shores to play golf in the wind and rain and walk and find themselves in eight. Pulp on Kerr surrounded by facie grasses and pitching fear waste were not a single flat lies available such a scenario could never ever work.

"So mookie betts last. Night Raby. Three homers Ford does in a game for the sixth time in his career Johnny. Sammy Sosa the only other players do that and movie didn't in a thousand fewer games basically in Mayes and fifteen hundred fewer than So when you look our call you red sox fan but you grew up there for goodness sakes and you see mookie bats, the red sox traded away it off to a start like this and avenue another three homer game. What do you think? Well I. Think it happens on the same day that the red sox give up seventeen runs and look at a single late in the Celtics and Bruins I think both lost and the Patriots are going to start a season without Tom Brady I think this is I think this is a reminder of the come up in Boston sports fans are are about to have to deal with and the next few years now I mean look it's It's a tough pill to swallow for red SOx nation to know that. Have you know mookie Betts in Clayton Kershaw and that's what this group is going to be about and to know that he was once part of your franchise and now he's not and a franchise paid him a lot of money and you believe your franchise and was capable of doing the same. For those that are moving in dying with the Red Sox I know it sucks. It really really does it's It's just a it's just a reminder and he's got to be that guy we all grew up with them that. Whatever he does he does to a level that few others can do it. So the three six times you know that's the same guy that has four. That's the same guy that bowls three hundred games. He does those things and and there'll be no surprise. You know when he wins more world series wins MVP's that's that guy he's the guy we all grew up with he's just doing it at the highest athletic level.

"Radio, so Tiger Woods made his return. For the first time. So the PJ got their restart, although now is John Rob's world and everybody's just living in it. He wanted to know Tournament over the weekend, and now he is the number one player in the world but lost in Tiger and his comeback. He did make the cut. Was Jack Nicklaus over the weekend at his tournament, saying in that earlier this year he had tested positive along his wife for covert 19. At 80 years of age. Yeah, Barbara I guess she had a little bit worse than he did, but but for the moment, no excuse to me She was asymptomatic, and he had it worse, and she did. But he said, I mean, telling CBS yesterday I was watching it during the rain delay. When he dropped that hammer like 80. My mom lives here with us. She's 79 Now we're quarantining from her. Cause we just went out Red Lodge, Montana, my girls and I did. My wife stayed here, but What? We're giving it two weeks of complete separation from from my mom. She's in that scene. You right there with Jack when he said that yesterday. Up being a damn, you're popped off the couch, man. When he said, we were lucky. It wasn't that that bad for us, it's been much worse for others. But what do you hear guys like Jack 80 years of age, right? And it is his bribe. Barbara, who's you know, same age. And she was a symptom. That's the crazy thing about this damn bug man. She's 80 and a symptomatic. And you know, and then you have Freddie Freeman with the Atlanta Braves Gonna die 104.5 fever. Putting ice bags on the man. Right mean get his temperature down. His words I thought I was going to die. That's it. It's an elite athlete. Who's in prime Physical condition. Me hit him that way yet. You know Barbara Nicolas? No Jack Nicklaus. You know, I got a couple of rough days and but, you know, That was good machine. Asymptomatic. Dude it that's a crazy thing about thiss. This bug we're dealing with Manus fires is that you just don't know You have no earthly idea. None. But the way he handled it, it was It was typical Jack, right? I mean, the champ. Unassuming, night out, Get better call it a day. Typical Jack, write me knock this in for for, you know, for par here and Here's my message to everybody, you know, wash yur hands where you mask You know, and we move on. They calm, cool collected on a very firm message from the golden bear you and did you notice all the yellow ribbons yesterday? The memorial? I did notice that you offer Children's hospitals. You know, That's his big thing. Everything goes to you know, the yellow ribbon club, you know the Children's hospitals. Memorialize a special place in my heart, having lived there in Columbus and cover that tournament. My wife used to work for you. No hives. Nicholson Sullivan, Dan Sullivan's Jack Nichols is a golf event planning team. And and it's Ah None but first class, but the way he delivered that message to your point, Freddy, it was just Typical golden bear night. Just do your job. Good. You do your job. I'm good. You could be like me, and we will be able to beat this thing speaking the Tiger Woods. He even talked about that He knew about the condition of the golden bear before anybody else did. And then I don't know if you've heard the news about Jack Barber, Nicholas.

"However. If you send me a really good joke, Jack Nicklaus says. I want to shake the hand of whoever wins my tournament. I've tested negative. What's the harm? You don't have to shake my hand, but I will extend it is a gesture. That's long been a part of the tradition. He's always done it, He says. He's going to it, son. It wasn't a pandemic Last year, Jack and he wasn't 80 years old either. And I know if you test negative, and I test negative well, then I guess we could shake hands. But maybe since we last got tested, the germ jumped on your fingers. The point is, it just sends the signal contrary to what we are all supposed to be doing, And it's also in violation of the PGA Tour, health and safety rule. Really, They don't want Lloyd in hand, though. There's no handshakes. There's no high fives. It's why I don't know if you've watched any golf the last few weeks, but there and it's what you'll see I I think it's what you'll see when the MBA starts playing here soon it virtual high five really virtual fist bumps and all that. All the science all the technology in the world, and the thing that will ultimately save us is a thin layer of cloth across your lips and nose folks. And then just don't touch folks. And so some people say, Well, in that case, you're not going to violate my right to do so. I'm gonna touch folks. Even if you're negative. And I'm negative and we therefore are safe. "I. How did you get on the chess? Beat in the first place? So I get really interested in these really need sports that. People are super invested in Ashwari. Kumar is an international features writer for Espn Lake if you're going to which. Of People Are Watching these chess tournaments that you wouldn't even know where that's happening in. Iceland. Or Finland, and so I had this curiosity so I was thinking so Bobby Fisher was such a huge part of chests in the US what Ron Labor is tennis. What Jack Nicklaus's to golf? That's what Bobby Fischer is to chess. Bobby Fisher of the United States will finally meet Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union in Belgrade Yugoslavia, but the chess championship of the world plus a purse of one, hundred, thirty, eight, thousand five hundred dollars, the richest prize for a head-to-head confrontation in any sport, but boxing. So who is the next Bobby Fisher? So I went to Saint Louis last year to sort of figure out what is going on in the chess world, so saint Louis has sort of become this chess capital of the country. Let's start with the basics here. What is a chess grandmaster? And what does it take to become one? Usually what happens? Is this International Chess Federation F. And they have this point systems so chessplayers. Lead different tournaments in accumulate these spines that. Gets them to a certain level of expertise, and they are then title the grandmaster, which is in fact, the highest I do that. A chess player can be awarded by International Chess Federation usually these. Players between the age of ten and fourteen, and so they go through these rigorous tournaments one after the other parents take them all over the world. And the get the title by around thirteen fourteen, and then they start to perfect the art of being perfect, just player. So you mentioned Bobby Fisher. Who is probably the most famous chess player all time? Actually is definitely the most famous chess player of all time. Who are the stars of the field today? The poster by of chess is at the moment Magnus Carlsen. Calzon is the best in the world. The youngest number one ever and no one can explain to you how he does what he does. It seems to come from another world, which is why he's become known as the Mozart of chess. He's from Norway. He sort of had this. Has this bad boy live to him? He's like interesting. He'll drop these nuggets about other players. You make jokes about his opponents. He talks trash social chicken. How do you not? He's GonNa do the same. Yeah the lack of comas is astounding. And quite disappointing. He talks acts. Yeah for sure sorta like that kind of Worcester wise. He's called the golden boy of chess. And then this. Is. Bobby Ana crew art, there's this Chinese grandmaster Ding Laren and then USA's Wesley so and Kara Nakimora. Really Good Armenia has live on Romanian so these are some of like the famous players at the moment that go up against each other all the time. So I the grandmaster that you decided to focus on with your story, the one who lives in Saint Louis is actually Italian. His name is Fabiano Caruana. Who is in? How did he get here? Fabiano Caruana is the number two seed in the world. He's an Italian American chess grandmaster. He became a grandmaster at fourteen years of age, fourteen years, eleven, months, and twenty eight to be exact, and he at that time was the youngest grandmaster in the history of Italy in the United States. E was sort of beg to be the next big thing in in US chess and he came back now. He has an apartment in Saint Louis. He lives there and he sort of boot. BOOT his life from scratch, and he was never like the big personality like Norris Magnus columnist. He's the guy that will is very chill loves video games and let us work to the talk to his justice stories about that call in the next Bobby Fisher like the next big thing. He's the one person that can actually dig down. Magnus, Carlsen in the world championship and become the next world champion. So what does? Chess match in a grand masters tournament. Actually look like. How does it play out? Okay so two grandmasters shake each other's hands. sit down across from each other is chessboard. This o'clock next to them that the are constantly looking at. This goes on for at least six hours right every day, and so during these six hours, the brain has to have most oxygen supply. Which means your heart is functioning three times faster than on any given. And because of that sustained higher blood pressure, and sustained higher level of activity by the heart and the rain, the body goes through intense physical. Energy lost during. A chess game that lasts six to seven to sometimes eat hours said.

been determined Jack this is Archie led wire to wire I was forty eight years ago today courtesy of diesel engines this this is like once that once interments over you you can have excitement there when you're getting ready when he's getting ready to pot I mean nobody's putting after that it's like you know you've done it and the golden bears one another great jacket it's incredible of all the things that we've seen this is one of the most exciting intervals yeah a horse with no name that was the number one song on the charge forty eight years ago I'm Mario sends out Mario okay does a pretty good job in putting the music together for our play of the day so I look in it says song horse with no face then there's a horse with no face Erica's number one song forty years ago when Jack Nicklaus won the nineteen seventy two masters and of course who can forget that wonderful song a horse with no face it's a horse with no name it Mario all I want a life back then well yes spelled Nicolas correctly come on you're better than that play the day play the day brought you by legalzoom they make it easy to set up the right state plan without leaving your home take care of your family day with Wright state plan legalzoom dot com Jack will join us coming up at the top of the hour I just noticed two years ago Jack Nicklaus sent me a birthday gift he sent me a picture that had a montage of a lot of his great golf wins and then it said Happy Birthday Dan smiley face and then it said Jack Nicklaus maybe you're just cleaning out his basement and thought Hey what am I gonna do with this thing nobody wants this all I sent one to van pelt and greeny and I'll send wanted it that Jim Patrick there who left ESPN but the jackal Jones coming up top of the hour I saw this from Mike Lombardi Michael Barney has worked in some front offices over his career he's got a GM shuffle podcast and we talk about to a ton of island and from what I'm reading it feels like Michael Marty is saying to a Tonga via lower has broken his wrist twice which would be new information and by the way they don't say which wrist I'm assuming it's just left one his throwing one of France's right when I'm not as concerned Lombardi said media draft experts don't consider durability and injury histories enough putting together their mock drafts he says so he's brittle you can't deny it you can't deny it he said two teams have flunked hunger by lower on his physical it comes down to this the fear like what is going to scare you more the fear of taking him or the fear of passing on him I understand if Miami takes him and you don't plan this first year but if you're trading up to get to a that's when the fear really sets in if you say I gotta go up two spots if he if he's there at five okay but if I now to go up to three and I have to give up on number one to the lines to go to three to ensure I get him because it it feel I think the Chargers would be interested in him and the dolphins are saying they might be interested in Justin Herbert okay is there a mystery team that might want to go up and get him and I know it sounds crazy because they have Derek Carr and they have Marcus Mariota but I do wonder about sure as a raider I they have draft picks I I don't know because nobody's going to show you their cards I mean you're crazy to tell anybody the truth nowadays and that's why I keep thinking all right we're eventually going to get the truth it'll start to leak out maybe two days before the draft that's when you start to get some real information here but I can't imagine that if if the Miami Dolphins have to move up in again and offer up a number one pick to alliance I don't know that's when the fear starts to set in a fear of taking I'm not passing on the club we're gonna break the internet just based on that statement raiders like to a question mark that's very very somebody a lot of sense somebody is going to be interested in one of these quarterbacks if they are eight to it happens every year it did and I don't know that there's always a mystery team where you go on I didn't know that they were interested in him what are you willing to give up to go up and get him is somebody going to wait for Jordan love to fall into their lap like if you if the dolphins could wait for Jordan love to develop that might make more sense if you really like him and you have Ryan Fitzpatrick at least for a year because Jordan love is not gonna be ready for probably two years at the earliest but yeah a little bit of time a little bit of misinformation usually thrown out there but you know that's Michael Barney who is well respected and says that he thinks too was broken that wrist twice Jack Nicklaus will join us coming up in ten minutes from now here on the Dan Patrick show right no trigger grills is hoping that you're focused on the things that truly matter like family and friends but also flavor not only is cooking a great cure for cabin fever it's also an amazing way to bond with the people who matter most in your life to go ahead fire up the Traeger grill and stay in a good mood through good food cooking with the Traeger wood fired grill adds "Mid October Jack Nicklaus said with people did not want to hear what I'm with him I don't see how you can play the masters this year postponed for now not cancelled masters made that distinction on Friday with that it's time for straight talk brought to you by straight talk wireless former masters champion Gary player believes that the masters and the folks at Augusta the decision made makers made the right play I love the idea that they postponing it and not canceling it it will be a very sad thing not to have an aghast it in my lifetime anyway that I can remember of so they made a very very wise decision and you know it's such a wonderful Dorman and people come from all over the globe and it does golf such a lot of good it'd be a shame just to cancel it so I'm delighted to hear they get postponement I'm not in a position to make a decision for Augusta and but for me and I would definitely say doesn't have the tournament if you're not gonna have any people around there that would just be such an anti climax that's the thing that's made this tournament I mean I know my last year and and any every year playing with Arnold and Jack guy coming down the line the people made it you know it would just was it is a special ambience that is not it's not you can't reproduce it and I would say do not have the time and without the people that is Gary player Jack Nicklaus eighteen time major champion believes a masters is not going to happen in twenty twenty L. practicality I don't think there's any way that that are postponing that I can't see any way that they want in a player later date I think it's just how in the world for the working into the schedule what it wouldn't be fair any other tournament this later so you know I think I think we're probably going to miss the masters this year that's just my opinion but I think it's a logical sense that is Jack Nicklaus Friday on SportsCenter we heard Gary player saying that it would be hard to play the gusto without the fans are own Matt berry agrees I don't know that the masters was gonna be played accreditations to begin with I think that was a lock that that probably wasn't going to happen a girl I I disagree at that point if you are going to allow patrons you don't play the tournament because I don't know that what it felt like the masters Dr roars and so I you know I told you that we can either cancel the masters or play it but it has to be without fans you would have chose cancel yes no I don't I would I I was relieved that I was fine you know what with the win the tournament when the NC double a tournament all this stuff from happening with conference tournaments the crowds I was like all right if I hold a separate unit about conference tournaments in general anyway but I when they said the NC double a turn it was gonna be played a lot of Kratos like within why not just postpone it that is not bearing on the madding caddy podcast it is sports center all night on ESPN radio Sirius XM channel eighty Kevin.

"And so for the wind so it's essentially play the course you'll get to play that seven hole for those that that want to play so your theory is not like many people talk about Jack Nicklaus that you got to play like Jack to to play one high got worse I sat right okay I could we go to let him go because I heard he's he's on about a paste of for a forty five hour work week so we better we're going to let him thank you so much and the we're casting I appreciate the time you put into the PJ as well and are a much and we'll see we'll see on the line you guys are good all right there's a there's a Clippard they had got professional here and stopping the golf shop if you need little trinket to take home it's golf shop is right near the gym the UPS vineyard vines shop so if you if you don't see it there so whether we are you go Tom Spencer is back with us for a few minutes and Tom I know you need to get going let me pose the question to you that I just posed Eric and you didn't get to hear his answers because you're out of the room but water two holes you think will will be the key is to buy a one in a winning champion today well we we hope it comes down to eighteen anytime a golf turn it comes down to the eighteenth or seventy second hole in our world of television and also our our world the radio it's good good for the audience good for the broadcasters good for the drama theatrics so I sense even though the unusual element today is you've got a separate leader board at least at the outset with three guys kind of you know away from the pack so to speak you could see this thing tighten up a little bit down the stretch but I would love to see you know a player with a shot at that green or Evey to wage depending on wind direction who knows to make a birdie after that going backwards all all all thrown another par five the fourteenth hole which you know really played a big pivotal role in the U. S. open just last summer Gary woodland member I think you had his caddy run a little long with you a couple weeks later and serenity artist through the the dynamic do I go for the screen or not they decided that yes the the the smart play rather than the wedge hit this is a rarity match where you hear that a two hundred fifty or three what is a higher percentage shot than a hundred yards sand wedge with that was the case you're you're gonna have to destroy welcome to me time well rounded Blodgett was let's get this thing pin high and not run the risk of a wedge that spins down the hill or yeah over the green whatever they made birdie and when when the term and so I don't say the two par fives which might be the only birdie holes conceivably on the back nine today will will decide this that I'm I'm gonna go the opposite and say to par threes I'm gonna be interested to see what they do one seven you know I at that were you know maybe your stated this it's not a double bogey hole today I don't think I could be but I'll be interested to see what they do there and then I've I'm always enthralled where the pin placement is on seventeen you know that that kidney shaped green and it's it's over to the left and I don't if you see a lot of history there I'm we manage your home yeah pretty traditional Sunday position out there yeah yeah it's that like the watching chip in the opposition Nicholas one iron right in the end what Lynn shipping last year out why because I mean exactly in the U. S. open exactly yeah and we've got a couple good scores just just for old score update as we right here Matt Jones two hundred through for he is tied for fifth Matt every read the first two holes he is now four shots back Phil Mickelson missed the second fairway looks like he hit it just short of the green and and got up and down again chipped up what I haven't seen it posted yet yeah I'm looking at here actually he did he did birdie birdie the second also fill is now tied Nick Taylor who is in better shape and got on the front edge and did not make birdie so so Phil is now tied for the lead so right and and that so to your point John transit that existed yesterday Mickelson still getting up and down so that's a good start for him and Nick Taylor I noticed just a minute ago missed about a four foot pine and not saying that's due to nerves or anything else but we have seen several short putts miss today already amongst the leaders so mark McCumber doing coverage here and you guys remember mark in early interments including at the Olympic club said this was the hardest course on tour in his day to make short pots inside of four feet break wind when putting services except or even though these courses are in magnificent shape there's always some little nuances when you have a lot of traffic it up tournament so have snow is someone to watch we're gonna say goodbye to you to later guys look for to catch up and talking with you after it's all over great day you know it great we'll see you around for work on that tan yeah okay when burned one of them to have a great have a great CBS today and we'll be watching here in the media center yep okay as we will see you about forest today so or do it thank you please check that all right morning okay there's Tom Spencer and we're gonna take it up till the top of the hour and we will then come back three to five today and and hopefully we'll have a shot at it so with the win match we got all that in the boating world we call that small craft warning so okay and when you look at the swell which is in with the players are worried about today but you can tell by the the direction the wind which way the swell is going to be on and the spacing between the swells that's we we or safety factors in the glow in the in the voting omnicell here word for it let me tell you about my friends at H. and M. marine who know all about that stuff there up in Sausalito they are the Chris craft dealer for northern California you've known the Chris craft craft name for years you've got to see the new models you can see them in their new show room in Sausalito wow are they cool HM marine is your one stop shop for all your mechanical.

Because now it begs the question and prompts us. All okay. What do we think is going to happen? Do we believe this is it for Taga? Hell no eight. And I will tell you what. Because now he's got the monkey off his back. The proverbial monkey off his back. And now, we all know what he's playing. He's trying to seek approval. Only thing that concerns me because his golfing is he healthy enough to play. And when he played which has a game. Game off the team has a mid range game. That's what I'm paying attention to. "Interesting to watch Nicklaus, and Gary Player, you could you could still feel the the absence of of Arnold Palmer. And right. We both have been there. I've sitting there at eight twenty in the morning like nervous for Jack Nicklaus for a a a tee shot. That's not gonna really mean. Anything? I give some perspective to just that part in the stodgy part of Gusta. Well, this tournament and Augusta National is all about traditions and one of the great ones for so many years was to see Palmer and player in Nickless as honorary starters that number when tee box, you know, early in the morning with the do still on the ground and people pouring in and they just wanted a chance to see the legends. You know, maybe they didn't get a c Palmer or Nickless or player in their prime. But there's just something cool and aesthetic as you said to to see them anyway in way past their prime. You know, I love watching it. I'll go when I get here early enough. I go out there and watch it, and it's kind of a goose bump moment. I mean, if you followed golf for a long time or even have an appreciation of the history you can't help. But just love that moment. Yeah. Nicklaus's seventy nine years old players eighty three years old. But did you see Gary Player this morning? You know, he loves Dow Dr nickel. On that. I t box it gives him. I mean, he he so competitive still nNcholas just kinda shakes his head about it. You know, he laughs at at players competitive nature. But you know, players still has a good swing, and he he knocked it out there pretty decent. Jack wasn't as happy with his with this shot. But you know, who cares? I mean, we remember eighty six we don't remember, you know, today two thousand nineteen and what he did it just cool. The that Augusta National still keeps that connection between the champions in this tournament. Yeah. True. I I've having grown up like you did watching Jack Nicklaus unit. You didn't you never have had to watch Nicklaus's shots. You could just tell by his demeanor Tigers fairly similar, you know, whether it's good or I mean, it the indifference look is is a great shot shaking. His head means that didn't go very well. Well, it's just revealing. I mentioned Gary Player still he he loves beating necklace on that on that I t box with the honorary shot, but even Nickless just kind of shaking his head semi disgusted at the effort. You know, once a competitor, always a competitor. They used to say that about you back in south flor-, stop, please. Please just to stop people don't realize, you know, each other pretty well went to school together. And somehow. Somehow somehow have survived along a long journey in the desert and remain. I think we're friends. I mean, you can say you're you're the only friend I have. So I'm gonna claim you anyway. Okay. You know, enjoy the masters. We'll talk to you again Amar. All right. "Thanks for the compliment having right Thompson on but thank right Thompson. He was the one telling the great stories, and I came across some of his writings a few years ago, and he had been in Kansas City, and I think New Orleans and had a chance to spend some time corresponding with him. And I just he was just different. There's certain writers who come along. And it's not just sports writers. He's in that category of just these writers have come along. And whenever you see that they've written something you read it in right Thompson's one of those guys. He's just has his special innate ability to be able to sort of go to the depths that nobody else gets to and also to to look at somebody as you know in hole in full. It's not a puff piece. Like, he's really trying to figure you out and he's not trying to curry favor as he said, you know, tiger wood is not happy with me with how I profiled. Him. But he thinks that if tiger had already surpassed Jack Nicklaus in majors that tiger would not be playing golf anymore that he thinks that he would have probably tried to be an ABC because he was obsessed with being a navy seal jumping out of helicopters. You know, he wanted to be like his dad was, but it was something that he wanted to not that he was told he had to do or we expect you to do this in imagine. It's pretty heavy when your parents are separated they come together when you're playing golf. So the joy, you bring them is when you play golf, and that's the only joy that your bringing to them, or at least in your mind, I'm bringing my parents together, they don't get along. But when I play well, and I'm playing golf they come together. This stain sports history. All in couple of good ones, April. Second nineteen Eighty-four Hoya paranoia. Georgetown to beat Houston. Eighty four seventy five to win the NCAA title. John Thompson, the first African American coach to win a national title. I right eighty-five. The NCAA basketball rules committee adopted the forty five second shot clock to begin in the eighty six season. Can't believe I got that out without screwing it up. Okay.
