Wolves overcome Randle's 57 points, beat Knicks 140-134

"It was a crazy offensive game that saw Minnesota beat the Knicks one 40 to one 34 in defeat Nick Julius Randle scored 57 points, but put the loss on the lack of defense. No, I mean, they didn't feel our presence from the beginning. So we gave them confidence in a team like that that can really score the ball. You give them confidence early. You know, they're going to stick around. Terry and prince had 35 for the T wolves, he had all 8 of his three pointers. Minnesota snapped the three game slide as they struggled for a postseason spot at 36 and 37, the 42 and 31 nicks had won three straight. Mike mancuso, New York

Sean Spicer on His New Children's Book "The Parrots Go Bananas!"

"We've got a lot to talk about here. You have a book out a brand new book. A kids book called the parrots go bananas, and I believe the parrots were talking about the chattering classes, the mainstream media, the blogosphere, they go bananas because they know Trump is going to have another term. Is that what the children's book is about? Look, that's definitely the none of it. It's about fake news is what it comes down to. The parents basically are part of the folks that go after these two really good individuals, Asher and Bongo, who are just playing a game. They accuse them of cheating. It's for kids four to 12. So we don't get into the heavy stuff here. I gotta be clear. Ladies and gentlemen, I was joking. I have joking. No, I know you know, but just in case anybody's gonna get confused. I'm always half joking. But the point is because I want to talk to you about the preposterous dare I say satanic corruption that goes that's going on right now with the rumors of arresting our president. It's so preposterous, but we're living in crazy times and I have to deal with it by joking. But your book for kids, the parents go bananas, really does deal with actual issues. So talk about that before we get into the news of the day. Yeah, look, I have two 12 year old kids. And I know what it's like for kids to pile on. Something I talked to him, they helped me write the book. I partnered with brave books. You can get it at brain books dot com and the idea is if you think about a Nick Sandman type situation. You remember that he was from Covington Catholic. These kids in the book, these two characters get accused of cheating. Everybody piles on, and they're sitting there saying, what do you mean? You guys know us. We're good individuals. We went to this game and we didn't do anything wrong. And they proved themselves innocent, but at the end of the day, they're trying to teach people about why did you jump to conclusions? Why didn't you take our word on it?

One of the Greatest Republican Issues of Recent Times

"One of the greatest problems that Republican Party has had in the last 15 years is the line from 2010 and that was that we will repeal ObamaCare. Repeal ObamaCare, repeal ObamaCare. And we kept telling our voters that all through 2011, 12, and so we're going to do this without having a mechanism to do it. And you can go vote in house the House of Representatives to do something, but if it never gets to the Senate and never gets the presidential signature, guess what? It never happened. And so for years, Republicans were able to Nick away at the ObamaCare legislation basically gutting it for a many, many ways. 8 or 9 times that a president Obama actually signed that basically gutted much of the ObamaCare legislation, but we could not tell that to voters on the Republican side because all they heard was repeal ObamaCare. They don't care that it doesn't work the way it should. And it's not as effective as what they had hoped it would be. And but yet it did have enough of an impact in which it changed the whole landscape of healthcare in this country. And when we had the opportunity, we failed.

Author Michael Foley Talks About His Book 'Dining With the Saints'

"Guys, I'm happy to welcome back to the podcast. before, doctor Michael foley. He's a theologian, Professor of patristics in the great text program at Baylor university, Professor of theology at the Aquinas institute, but I love these titles of his books, drinking with the same drinking with saint Nick and the politically incorrect guide to Christianity. We're going to talk about his book called dining with the saints, I think a very appropriate topic on Saint Patrick's Day. Doctor foley, thanks for joining me. Great to great to have you. I think you can see I've got the appropriate. I don't know if this is the right shade of green, but as you can imagine, I'm not really. Well, I'm not Irish. I guess I could maybe I should change d'souza to oh, Sousa. And then I then be I then be, I could then play the baby I identify as Irish. Okay. These days we're allowed to do that sort of thing. Talk to me about Saint Patrick's Day. It's a day, I didn't have any knowledge of before I came to the United States, and who was this guy with Saint Patrick, the guy who was who evangelized Ireland, is he what brought these crazy Irish people into the folds of Christian couldn't have been an easy task and that he did he used some large buckets of alcohol to get the job done? Well, he was a real person and you're absolutely right. He was the person who brought the faith to Ireland, there was an earlier missionary actually who tried and ran from the place screening. The iris was such a hard nut to crack. But he got a commission from the Pope to bring the faith to Ireland and by all historical accounts he did. He almost single handedly within his own lifetime, turned an entire island from being druids, which was a very dark and sinister religion into Christians. So it really is a singular accomplishment.

Atmospheric rivers flood California with more rain, snow

"Thousands of people are under evacuation orders in Northern California, with flooding from the latest atmospheric river. Santa Cruz county is one of the areas hard hit by this latest burst of storms called the pineapple express. In SoCal, Nick muleta tells KG OTV, a flooded creek destroyed a portion of Main Street. I've never seen the creek go actually through the road, so it's just nuts to see, you know. It's really crazy. Dozens of homes are under threat and Watsonville and Lake oroville spillways are being open to head off flooding from the reservoir. In the Bay Area, a business roof collapsed, killing a worker at a Pete's coffee distribution center. The Story of 'There Goes My Life' With Neil Thrasher

"The story of behind there goes my life because how many this one, I mean again, whether it actually happened to you're not, there's so many people relate to this song. That's a fact. Like no other song that I've been a part of, we've gotten more response, more feedback, more letters, and emails about how this affected their life. And this song actually was my co writer Wendell mobley, who Lee Miller is good friends with. We all write together, but I've had most of my success with Wendell. And this was his idea. And he actually lived a little bit of this song way back when he was young. And we held on to this idea. It was his idea. He brought to the table. We had it all written down, but we hadn't started working on it. I bet a year went by and we had that idea laying around. And the only line that we had was. We had a line, one of the lines in the song, I can't even remember which one it was. We had laid down, but I know we had the title written down in our notebooks back when we were still actually writing words down and not typing them down. We had there goes my life, you know, the teddy bear line and all that stuff was written out, but we hadn't actually put the song together. And then one day we just did Nick happened so fast. By the time we got that song written to the time we recorded it like the next day in a week's time, Kenny had heard it and was going to record it. And it seemed like a week or two later, it was on the radio, but I know it wasn't that quick, but it felt like that's how fast that song happened. And it went up the charts and hung up there for about 7 weeks at number one. It was a big old song. I wound up, I wound up singing it at one of my daughter's graduations. They asked me to come do it when the school called my about threw up when they asked me to do that because there's no way I'm gonna be able to get through this song looking at those caps and gowns. I mean, I can't do this. But I did, and I made it through it. We did good. We got nominated for ACM song of the year. Went to Vegas, and we didn't win. It didn't matter.

"Losing O season office according to defense coronary is more or is it the same more changing on a college level or a pro level? Because now you're looking at Philadelphia, Philadelphia came very close in a Super Bowl, look good, mahomes is just my home. But he now loses here on loses his office, Gordon and his defensive coordinate. Going into a new year with, you know, again, is much pros do move. Which is the bigger impact. An offensive coordinator defense Courtney loss on a college level or a pro level. I think it's more in a college level. Because in pro level, you got enough money, you've got enough. We're with all to make sure you have got somebody in the wings or you've done enough research that you've got a general idea of what you're going to do. I mean, it can't be a shock to everybody that Philadelphia was going to lose a coordinator. What, oh my gosh, he's leaving. He had made he had been thinking about this. He and the GM and the owner had been talking about this for a month and a half now. So it didn't like it's a shock to them. Whereas in college, you don't have to wear with all to maybe, you know, the one that's done at the best to me is Nick. Nick's always had one of those guys that they call whatever they call them. Fighting Back Against Rogue Regulators

"All right, Friends, well, today we are really picking up on the theme of 2023 so far, which is as it turns out not just fallout from FTX, but specifically, the emergence of a dramatic regulatory battle around crypto in the United States. I think many of us felt that this was inevitable coming off of the events of last year, but it is playing out in very specific ways, which I think demands specific responses. We're going to read one essay in a couple of threads today, and we start with a piece by Michael Casey from coin desk called regulating crypto by enforcement and stealth will set the U.S. back. Michael writes, call me naive, but I've always resisted the conspiracy theory that the anti crypto stance adopted by certain U.S. regulators is meant to strangle this industry and protect the financial establishment it seeks to disrupt. I've preferred to see it as a wrong headed but well intended effort to protect consumers. Recent events have me wondering if something more sinister isn't afoot, and that maybe I am naive. First, all indications are that the securities and exchange commission will outright prohibit companies from providing staking services to retail customers in the U.S. products that give investors an opportunity to share and the token rewards that proof of stake blockchains delivered a validators. Following a hint from coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, that's such a band was coming, news broke that in response to an SEC lawsuit, coinbase competitor kraken is indefinitely abandoning the staking service it offered to U.S. customers and paying a $30 million fine. Second, per observations from castle island ventures general partner Nick Carter and blockchain association chief policy officer Jake stravinsky, and evident in other signs such as binance's problems with U.S. dollar bank transactions, it seems regulators are pushing U.S. banks to stop surfacing crypto companies. These latest moves will make it even harder for average U.S. citizens to participate in this industry. Limiting it to large institutional investors, while various innovative startups look to disrupt those same rent seeking intermediaries will struggle to access liquidity. It's hard to understand how these actions serve to protect consumers or further other policy objectives such as expanding financial inclusion. It feels as if government agents are deliberately trying to force this industry into the hands of Wall Street fat cats.

"Each one of those padded practices. No real preseason reps and when you look at them playing the saints. It looked like they were not prepared which dan said i think they'll be fine. Big news for the saints dan. I'm gonna go hot news here i. It's not what aaron rodgers said. It's how he said it. I sound like my mom right. The tone of how aaron rodgers speak sometimes to the media considering what he went through this past summer. I think really rubs fans especially green bay packer fans the wrong way. I think it's news because the packers looked terrible. And you mentioned a key. Seventy seven padded practices. There's not a lot of preparation and then the comments. He made really put it on the coaching staff as we discussed yesterday. I think that's actually hot. News is hot news or not news with dan. Graziano jalen hurts three touchdowns in his first start of the year. Dan hot news or not news. Hot news remembered jalen hurts. This year is on a mission to convince the philadelphia eagles that they don't need to go make a big trade. For someone. Like the shawn watson aaron rodgers or someone like that next off season. This is his audition and coming right out of the gate he had. He hit a big one. I mean this was. This was a guy. Say look. don't overlook me. I can be your answer at quarterback long way to go in the season but great. Start for jalen hurts. Hot news for jalen hurts dig. Dan is right there. We talk about going out and getting a shower and watching jalen hurts. Doesn't get the necessary respect around national football league from the pundits not the players on the field but people that in my eyes that don't watch football to know that this guy can really play. It was a decision made by nick. Sabin that have put this narrative out on him. When nick saving went to and he transferred to oklahoma two years later in lit it up people automatically assume. The jalen hurts. Could play the position. Hot news when you get a win on the road and your first game as a starter against the falcons especially hot news. When the same day the other quarterback that used to play for your team play marginally against seattle and saw their head get beaten and the other quarterback who took your job is not playing as well as this is hot news. Look at what the eagles did they use the second round pick on him when they had carson wentz. They gave him all the reps with the ones right he he. The team responded to last year. Got him devante. Smith who is excellent and been excellent. This is hot. News jalen hurts also takes care of the ball and the team plays forum. Mike able calling out. Julio jones for a personal foul hot news or not. "As you just heard fits nick saving. We'll be joining the guys in the morning tomorrow. Eight ten am so let's dive right into week. One of college football. And i want to get to the game. You're going to be on the call for the biggest game of the weekend in just a moment. But let's start with alabama during our break. You're listing off the pieces that are not returning to alabama. So could you just repeat them. Once i for public consumption and then also remind me where alabama is ranked in the preseason polls. This is staggering. And what's crazy field is that this happens every single year. now at alabama. Let's start with coaching staff. You lose stif zakian your roles award winner as a top assistant and olive college football. You lose your associate head coach. No line coach steve flood former rutgers head coach and previously the offensive line coach with the atlanta falcons they both go to texas along with jeff banks special teams coordinator goes to texas. Also steve sarkissian. That's just a coaching staff. That happens every year. now bill. O'brien in as you know your. Oc you lose the heisman trophy winner and devante smith gang eagles. You lose johnny. United's and davey o'brien award winner. Max jones starting quarterback now new england patriots. The joe more award went as a top offensive line. All college football went to you guessed. Nfl alabama right. Outside of having from allan allan this transplant the joe more award winning offensive line. Best line in college football yes. You are somewhat correct. They went to the national football league. Because the and trophy went to alex. Leatherwood you know the remington award top center in football is land dickerson now. Obviously with the eagles doak walker top running back nausea hairs. These guys are gone. They're gone and yet. Who's preseason number one alabama houses. How un's let me ask you this. How is this possible. Because every year alabama's gonna be ranked extremely high that. That's that's part of what has happened. During the era of nick sabin but there have been years where even nick sabin has known like hey we may be ranked real high in the preseason but this may not be one of our best teams. Is this a year. The alabama is vulnerable. Man i would have said in years past years past i would have gone. You know four or five years ago field but as herbstreet said last week on the first episode of college game day which meant how good that feels again. And i agree with her on this man i hate to agree with herbie. My radio co host on anything. But he's right as long as that dude named coach. Nick sabin is the head coach at alabama. I am done saying somebody else is going to win the west or when the sec. Just look at the history. I mean whether it's a coordinators or players is just a factory. I mean. I don't know if they are spawning players underneath bryant denny. Stadium some lab but it's remarkable. Man what they are doing there and so you don't. Hey jalen hurts to. Mac jones all by all the way in one room one quarterback as the all three of those guys all starting quarterbacks in the league and everybody else. They've lost his all right. Rice young ammonium son. Here we go out your turn. Come on and he's now your new star quarterback at alabama. I think he's going to watching him at a day. When i was there covering alabama spring game field. I think that maybe early. He much struggle a bit. Spencer rattler last year at oklahoma. If you're going to get him you better get them early. And and miami's a nineteen point. Underdog ain't going to be the canes and the more reps. He gets the better. Bryce young is going to be a quarterback but rally we saw struggle a little bit earlier part of that pandemic obviously and dealing with you know the cove restrictions and whatnot and not being able to practice as much but bryce young looked to struggle at times in that day especially going against one when they went ones v. Wants eleven on eleven. So he might have a hiccup here there early. They're not losing to miami. I'm looking for miami. Keep a close took the eighteen and a half and bought it to nineteen. I'm fiscally invested in that game on saturday but you're not just just different man. I mean it's and they have eight starters back off that defense. They lost a lot on offense. But eight guys led by christian. Harrison will anderson on defense. They're gonna be hunting field and it's remarkable to watch how they do it year in year out every year when they lose so much either on the field or on the coaching staff is truly remarkable. The start of the game that you'll be on the call for that is to me the obvious best game of the weekend. It is number three clemson and number. Five georgia georgia has been knocking on alabama's doors up as much as any team has in recent in the sec. Is this the year we're kirby smart can break through. And what is you know. This is actually kind of laugh. I'll say what's it like for dabo to have to move on from trevor lawrence. And then i'm reminded by the fact that dj you just turn over to dj. Who was one of the highest rated prospects like the past five years amongst quarterbacks and we get it. We got a taste of him last year. When trevor lawrence got copay yes we did. Dj game younger. La is is a massive human being a linebacker and in his touch. the ball. everything. I mean he he he. He's a total package. So just go ahead from shawn watson right trevor lawrence. Now here comes dj. I mean it's it's kind of like alabama daboh has who played at alabama when a national championship in nineteen ninety-two at alabama alabama on a lake. Clemson me it's it's it's turning him in and out and daboh said yesterday field and let this sink in that. This wide receiving core might be one of the best in deepest. He's ever had. Why said in six to seven years. Let's take a picture this group because in six to seven years from now we're gonna look back and go all those guys. Were on one team. So they got issues at center. Georgia's coming in a bit banged up. I think this game means more though field to clemson than it does to georgia because georgia has more on the schedule to make illusions game. On saturday i totally agree on them by the way. How many times have you practiced. Dj's last let me hear it three times fast. We don't fast. I can't do but we really we undulate. That's one of those where the day before the broadcast. The day of the broadcast. I will be standing hotel looking at myself. I'm like my. Ron burgundy do dj. "He now has more national championships. And the other 129 active FBS coaches combined. So that on Yahoo Sports today let me repeat that one. Coach Nick Saving has more national championships than every other college coach on the FBS level combined at 129 schools. And how about the Heisman winner Devante Smith. Last night 12 catches Ah College football title game, a record 215 yards, receiving three touchdowns and did not play the second half because of the finger injury. It would have 12 catches 215 yards and three touchdowns to play. The game was Jones to Smith? That was 42 yards just before the half. Somehow, some way. Devante Smith was one on one against poor tough. Borland, the Ohio State linebacker. The perhaps the lasting image of that game will be Devante Smith streaking away for a 42 yard touchdown and tough Borland. The poor guy, chugging, huffing and puffing behind is the middle linebacker who had no chance to catch him. And if you're like me, I don't know if you are, if you're like me. It was a moment last night where you found yourself watching Devante Smith make the sideline catch where he contorted his body to have the hands and got his feet down. And you're thinking Wait a minute. And I close my eyes and I said, I see. I see. I see Joe Burrow breaking the huddle coming to the line of scrimmage and I see him motioning Joe Mixon behind him in the back field. And I see Joe, take a look to the left. And I see Tyler Boyd in the slot and I looked further toe left and I see tea, Higgins. And then Joe brings his eyes back across the defensive line of scrimmage over to the right and he sees Devante Smith. And I'm thinking Oh, I had a chill wind a shiver. The hair stood up on the back of my neck. I can't be the older one last night who watched that game, it said. Do you realize what this offense might look like? If Dion Devante Smith was drafted by the Bengals at number five? Anybody else? Man. The Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian Sark, who's bound for Texas. It was like he was playing a video game license. I actually felt sorry for Ohio State's defense, actually, the way the game is played down college football. I feel sorry for defense is a general because it is such an explosive pass. Happy rules. Favorite Just explosion of offense in college football mean Mack Jones and I have no idea how good Mack Jones is gonna be as an NFL quarterback. Todd McShay and Mel Kiper seem convinced he's a first round pick. I saw Mel had him at what number 15 to the Patriots and his latest mock draft..

"Um 621 yards total the 3 41. I mean, huge disparity. 33 tough first downs. 19. They just cut through and they really do whatever they wanted. And you know the one thing I didn't love seeing Now, Listen, I would never see was planted up for the cameras, but I did not love scene. Jalen Waddle out there hobbling around. I don't By the way. No, it was not there a ton. At his first play that he came It was little shovel pass got the first down. Then he went right out of the game on D. I love the fact that he wanted to play and I love the fact. Because you just don't see this. It's the exact opposite nowadays and I get it. I'm not throwing shade of young men who aren't gonna risk. You know, $2030 million for an essence of meaningless game in terms of your earning power, not meaningless in terms of your legacy in college, and, you know, going to battle with the boys that you that you went that you went that you that you went to battle? They were down. I mean that. Yeah, but Pardon me loved it. And part of me was cringing Every time I saw him, I agree. Hobbling. I agreed. Visibly hobbling. Yeah, the that play that you're talking about the third down play. I mean, we knew that they were going to probably go for it on fourth. They didn't get it back. Jones probably could have ran and got it himself. Totally. He did the right thing. He was like, Dude, why am I gonna take the head? Let me let me shovel this to jail and waddle who looked perfectly fine running across the field and all of a sudden you just started. You see him started catch himself trying to you know, and you know that that ankle was still bother. Bring him on. Did you saw this explode over social media Like, why does this kid need to play right now? He doesn't. They don't need him to win this thing this football game, But I understand him wanting to be you know, they're for his teammates and partake in this national championship team. I think by that point they could kind of feel the mo mentum fully on their side. Hey, wanted to be a part of it not not dissimilar. To their sinner. Um Landon Dickinson, who came in and took a snap is they were kneeling down at the end. He's got a thorn up me and he had it. He was fully dressed for the coin toss. He took it. I mean, he took the last couple of snaps. I thought that was that was awesome and classy by saving to get him in there because I was. He's been an anchor for that team for for for many years now, But there's one thing worth noting. And this is a This is a testament to Nick Saban. Bt Hmm. Most of these studs in college football. You see him for a couple years. They're like, all right, I'm out. I'm going to get paid. The stars on this team developed a Smith back Mack Jones is I think maybe he's the exclusion because he's got one more year, but back Jones, Devante Smith, Landon Dickinson, Alex Leatherwood. He had nausea, hair all fourth year, guys, men, they all stayed, they probably could have left. Who knows what they would have gotten drafted? Well, Mack Jones. Mack Jones made a lot of money this year, but the other guys they would have, they would have left they draft. Maybe they're not first round picks, but they're in the league and they're playing and they're contributing. They all stayed for their fourth years and got this thing next title for them because they obviously 11 As freshmen as well. So I mean, that's a testament to Nick's David being able to keep your guys obviously it's one thing to recruit. We talk about that all the time for head coaches. It's probably easy for next statement at this point come to us. You're gonna win a national championship. I guarantee it. Um, um because he wins every other year, really statistically, but to keep the guys around, that's hard to do. And that's why this team is is so hard to beat on any given week. They're just they're They're They're a gift that they're a gift there. One of those give you notes. Many like you. You look at some of the old grainy footage, whether it's you know, Wooden's Bruins. You know things of the past before we were born, even when we were young, and you know, people younger than us. They see it now. They're like, Oh, wow, that, you know, even like maybe, maybe Leitner. I mean, if you're really young, you see later, Bobby Early at Duke with Coach K when, when Coach K would not not the first time that lost to UNLV the second time when they came back, and they won And just one of the great teams of all time or UNLV. You know, you look at these snapshots of Of greatness across the collegiate landscape and You know, we we tend to the way we are. Nowadays we tend to certainly enjoy it. I know I had a great time watching that game last night, Especially when you leave the 8.5 points, maybe double back down in the second half of your last 6.5 points. I'm just saying, I really enjoyed it, but I really enjoyed it. But I do think that there's a lot of people out there that okay whom onto the next like they process it for a second, And then they somehow Place priority on other stuff, which I get. But in the meantime, maybe unintentionally, you know, weaken the potency of what we just have had the pleasure to watch. I mean, without the babble with Nick's Eben And the inevitable comparisons to Bela Chick. I mean, it's no longer conversation is Nick Saving the greatest college football coach of all time. Waste anybody tired? That's that's ridiculous, but Can you now branch out here Teak and and maybe position Nick versus Bill and or Lombardi as the greatest coach just plain coach..

"May. I think we're the best team never of light quarterback back Jones talking about his Alabama Crimson tide. Alabama was the college football national title last night of 52 24 win over Ohio State and consider this season Alabama average over 48 points a game and over 541 yards for game every head coach Nick Saving a record seventh national title. You know the Wizards we know they could score they did last night. 1 28 1 of the seven wonders of the Sons by the key for Robin Lopez. I think we're a lot more consistent on the defensive end. "We're going to embrace where college football is going? All right, we're gonna We're gonna go to that open air raid kind of offense. We're gonna throw the football. It Right and you watch and that was a big decision for Alabama to go from. Hey, we're this kind of pro style offense to do it. And now hey, we got to do what everybody else is doing because it used to be these crazy air raid offenses were done where teams who can't compete with better athletes. They would change their offense to look. It's why Syracuse did what they're doing with Dino Babers. Any. We have this Crazy offense, where we run a play every four seconds, and we try to compete with other teams that were not as good as well. Now every team has figured out today We can win this way, and it's you know, puts a lot of points on the board and we don't need to grind it out. And after worry about possessions all the time, So Alabama made that flipped and then boom suddenly here come all the four in five star quarterbacks, and here they are going to the National Football League. And here's Jalen Hurts, who looks like he's gonna be a really good player. Who was taken number 23 overall in the draft. Now you're gonna Matt Jones gonna eventually find his way to the NFL to Here comes Devante Smith is going to be a top five pick Nagy Harris. This is what Alabama does. So now Alabama's exciting because it's fun watching them score. Hey, if I'm gonna watch a big sec game on Saturday, Boy, I'm watching Alabama ls you do I want to see 1916 or do I want to see Hey 62 to 50. And when you can see Alabama do something like that. I think this is like the reboot for Alabama. Not so much where. Hey, I'm tired of Alabama. No, this is now the river where Alabama is even more exciting than they were in the past. No, that's hot. Take theater. Okay, if I give you a bag of crap, and then the next day, I bring you a bag of crap that has a bow on it. Still the bag of crap, right s Oh, yeah, that's a hot take Alabama's a bag of crap. Look, just what whatever Whatever you want, I just thought the bag and craft was the nice way to put it at its basis. You could dress it up. However you want the same thing. Yeah, You're president. It's still the same logo. It's still the same team. It's still the well quashed coach on the sideline right. We decided as a nation that we hated the warriors of less than three years. Don't tell me just because they're scoring points. Everybody's happy to see Alabama there again. There's something in the history of the right people that love college football and all those folks that tell themselves how much they love, college football and the pageantry and the tradition and everything else. That's great. It's another paragraph in the Wikipedia entry. For Nick Saving and the Alabama Crimson Tide. I'm telling you, America wants other names, other teams but as Ric flair and always said to be the man who you got to beat the man and this year and for the next decade while he's on the sideline, I don't think so. That was very impressive. I like that. That was very nice. There's really well done. That was that was all improv. No scripts here. It's no writers. No, no, don't make up. No, nothing That's may be harming me. That sounds like a fragrance. My pure Harmon comes out. What does it smell like? It smells like pork shoulder, All right, but it spoke to me. But here's why I disagree is because college football is so is so territorial in which you arm or crazy about it in one part of the country than you are in the other, and the SEC owns things. It's very regional. College football has been so when it comes to the playoffs when it comes to who people want to see teams that they know Alabama is playing. All right. Well, all right, well, I know Alabama, right? Great. They're this. They're X Y and Z and Alabama's that good if you had a team this year, if this was Arizona, Arizona state playing in the national championship, er or or somebody else?.

"I thrown 37 is that when you say 37 touchdown pass, and you say Nick saving anything sounds right. Doesn't it doesn't But Matt killing his had that kind of year And I thought that he was actually gonna get the Heisman was down to his teammate who had a phenomenal season and divine for Smith. Um, you mentioned a number of games played. And as I mentioned, you guys only got four in Pac 12. The Big 10 had almost as many issues they started just before you You, but I owe state added to their number by by winning the conference championship game and in the semifinal game, but they have played significantly less than Alabama. From a coach's perspective, assuming health on both sides and I know that in a vacuum, so I'm asking you to go there for me. But assuming everybody's got all their players on both sides, would you rather be coaching a team that's played 12 games and has to play their 13th or a team that's only played seven. But I could make an argument either way. No, you can and I think, And that's great for debate that great for shows that you have. That's why your show so popular, you know the right questions asked to give the viewers to call in right try. It's always going to be a debatable question. I do know this. You have two outstanding football teams. With great players on both sides of the ball. Um, can't say enough about because coach saving what he's been able accomplish there in Alabama, and obviously the House ST. Um Coach has done a marvelous job there as well. I'm very excited about being involved in broadcast of that as well. I'm gonna work with two officials. And we're going to get to talk about the game and just kind of look. These these podcasts seemed like similar deals where they have some coaches at the round table. I did that two years ago. But now I'm working with two officials. So will be a lot of conversation of how the game is being called the house being played with officials. During the course of the game. What a head coach kind of does, of course of the game. So I think for fan you're going to kind of see through the lens of the officials how they look at it. Obviously, the obvious file is one thing, but maybe some other things that they don't quite see. And then, from the coaches perspective, you know the conversations you have with officials. Encounter your mindset of how the game is being played. "That 100 grand will go a long way. People said Russell was gonna carry a team at the Legion of Boom was over. Yeah, baby, we stairs, speaking of leaders. You can make the case that Nick's saving maybe the best coach in sports in the United States. It's easy hate on Nick's saving, or depending on where you live next, Satan. Look what he's been able to do not just with players. Reviving the careers of coaches. I use these Sarkeesian. His name was toxic. Not that long ago. Let's be honest. He had a serious drinking problem and drank himself out of the dream job. You always wanted USC. And Nick Saving, as he'd like to say brought him into the healing hands of saving that Steve Starkey is gonna be the head coach of Texas. Butch Jones washed out of Tennessee. Also, he's gonna be the head coach once again in Arkansas State. Vontae Smith, Nick Saban said. You come back for one more year. I promise you're going to be a better NFL player, Vontae Smith took his coach at his word. He has collected eight Trophies, postseason trophies. Before playing national championship game, including Heisman Trophy You don't have to like Nick Saving Nixon really doesn't care. That process thing he talks about seeing the work out pretty well. Alabama and not just with players. With reclamation projects you give a misfit toy. Also that becomes brand is shining new in the next seven. You can make that case and no one will laugh at you. That is bad is he has been in terms of not being that personal coach. Maybe the best coach in professional sports or an amateur sports in the United States. Lane Kiffin, Kyle Flood into Rapid white look at Brian Table after he came down to Alabama for year two, and now look what he's doing. A Buffalo's OC might be a head coach in the NFL in 2021. Yeah. Mike Stoops is there right now than analysts as well. He will be a head coach. About two or three years subject you, man. When you get to the Church of the right regulations, hands upon.

"And that's what you got a credit The coaching staff or for their fortitude and inside hanging in there and working through these issues as they pop up, you know, But as the season went on, this team really settled in to obviously being a power running game and then Play on play action off the running game. Simplifying the offense, not in a negative way, but just making it very decisive for Baker, and once he bought into that, man, he really started playing well, You got two dynamic rushers in the backfield and you know that's the kind of team I can gain some moment. Um in the playoffs. I mean, it's no, It's no secret that the winning formula come playoff time is play good defense and run the ball. And the Browns are doing both of those right now, So it's gonna be interesting to see how far they go. Bill before you got to the NFL. You are a proud Texas Longhorn alum and Big news out of long or nation. Steve Sarkisian coming in his head coach and Tom Herman being fired first. I wanna ask you about that. We think about that move, and then you also Played for Mack Brown while he was a Texas If I'm not mistaken, and he had a resurgent with that USC team I love to get your thoughts on both of those where you thought of both Mack Brown success and then you know the hiring of new head coach. Well, there's no I was actually leaving. Texas has not got there. But I got to know Mac through the years that there's there's uh, no surprise that he's having such six. At North Carolina. He's an unbelievable man. Players love them. Recruits just wanna play for him. And so the turnaround in North Carolina eyes not unexpected by anyone who knows Mike Brown, and so I was really happy to see Success he had this year regarded GT. I've been down in South Texas deer hunting and literally was off the grid and so started driving back in today and Already getting all the news and you know, it came as a unexpected. News, but you know as a diehard burnt orange Gotta have the Longhorns back on the national scene type of guy if the administration feels that that's the best thing for the program. I'm all for it. You know, it's there's high expectations of Texas. I think college football is better off in Texas is A Nelly team. We've had our struggles recently. And I think You look at what New coaches pedigree, the kinds of quarterbacks he's been able to grow to groom the kinds of teams he's been around, obviously, most recently in Alabama with the kind of talent there and learning from the coach like Nick Saving I think Longhorn fans have a lot to be excited for. Bill before we get you out of here. This'll is out of left field. How? What percentage of your closet? Do you think it is? Orange between Browns and Texas Texas gear. It's a fair amount, obviously a different shade of orange and I won't say which one I like better, But Orange definitely has a prominent place in my family's home for sure, I would imagine Phil Johnson. Thank you so much for being here with us on prime time we appreciate it. Thank you. I don't know how much Mark her Xlix closet differs from giant blue to Boston. What is it? Scar? Is it Scarlett or Garnet? Technical miracle? Sorry. I was getting too too technical for past you would understand her. You know what I was trying to make Sure I covered the color wheel there. We'll get into markers like closet at some point later in the show. I'm sure very important things. But coming up next, we're going to update you on this afternoon's action and the latest news out of New England. What should the Patriots do when it comes? To quarterback next season. We're going to get into that. Next, you're listening to prime time on ESPN radio. January fair. Really.

"Former coach of the year He joins me now on CBS Sports Radio, Tommy Thanks for joining me this morning here. Good morning. Thanks for having me. What did you think of what you saw from Ohio State in the semi final because I wasn't expecting them to be able to out physical Clemson the way that they did. I didn't either. Thank you know any of those guys Anybody's coach within that coaching environment before emotion, intensity energy effort things like that are so important when two evenly matched teams play. Thank the incentive of Ohio State had never beaten Clemson. Uh, unfortunately, you know, dabble, rank, 11th, you know, Was it right or wrong? That's not the argument. The argument is, did it add firepower to Ohio State from intensity airport after, uh reason, and then you know that that causes the intensity of practice causes focus and concentration, and then the effort of the trenches Offensive line defense line where that game was won. Particular Clinton's lack of productivity and protecting the quarterback in Ohio State's dominating run offensive line pass protection. I thought that was a key factor in the game. What did you think of how Justin Fields played, especially after he got hurt on that hit to his hip. What do they say The true test of a man's character is what he does in adversity and about that's the true test of his character, because even you know, hip, whether it was a hip pointer or whether it was ripped the helmet. Could have hit either one my head of both, but very, very painful and and you know the ribs, and it's tough to shoot up from a painting or leaving standpoint halftime or something. But hitting him go in and continue to what he did wonder are obvious pain. He saw the hit. You know, he was in pain, just a great effort and says a lot about his character. I know that you've had an opportunity doing all this stuff and work for the A C C network just to see what Trevor Laurence has become over these last three years. How would you describe What you saw coming in from high school from him to the player that he is, as he may be leaves for the NFL. You know, I had a little bit of the indication and knowing Daboo and having him on my staff when with the Shawn Watson was making that great run that he did, Dad Bo kept saying, Wait. Do you see this other guy? That's it? Wait a minute to Shawn Watson better than him. And whether he goes NFL is more productive than Shawn Watson to Shawn. Watch it, we won't know, but you hear the term generational quarterback and what he did true freshman national champions. Beating Alabama play his whole career on loose two games. Just a phenomenal clears his physical presence. His maturity is a true freshman. You just don't see those type of guys often I was kind of alerted to before and by Dav. Oh, I don't know if I believe him. I do now. What do you think of this matchup between Obama and Ohio State? You know, when you look at you look at every two when you start unfeeling the onion. Okay, Just go. Let's look at black and white statistics. Total offense scoring offense. Totally been scoring defense. Alabama wins three out of four. Can you keep drivers going? T o get points. Down conversion percentage. Alabama. Okay, You gotta complete him on third down, which quarterback Matt Jones leads the nation in third down. Alabama leads the nation. Third down conversions Passing complete completion percentage of Mack Jones leads the nation. Justin Field is not far behind. But when you look at every avenue dominance of the offense, mind defense lives, I think the edge Goes to Alabama. Everything you look at statistically and then physically with performance throughout the year, Uh, the advantage goes to Alabama. It does seem that way, and I do wonder. I wonder what to make of Northwestern. That doesn't have the type of athletes that Clemson or in Alabama has. He did such a good job defensively against Ohio State. I imagine that Nick Saban is watching the tape going, Why I got guys that are going in the first round of the draft. I got a whole litany of him on defense. I wonder if he can duplicate some of the things that Northwestern had success with in the Big 10 championship game. I don't think there's anybody there is anybody after. It's it's Nick Saving, I think, Draw a some Some positive. Uh, play a defense is from watch another family all those years. He spent the pros they don't recruit. All they do is evaluate film. I think in a two week span, if there is an advantage, it would go to Nick saving and taking things in Northwestern did defensively and it kind of hurts. You got insert and then to make sure they fit your philosophy in your density Defensive game plan, But usually a defensive is flexible enough where you can do that take things one or two things from Northwestern, so I'm sure there are things he will draw and that that will be a factor. I don't know if it will be as big a factor is, we'll be again the execution of it on game day, Tommy, I'm glad to have you on the show because I needed a coach's perspective on something. Two things here. Steve Sarkisian is gonna take over. As the Texas head coach. Why is a job like Texas so coveted by by coaches and also so difficult toe have for coaches? Number one, the one that's the one of the reasons so coveted because the finances facility wise you like nothing they have facilities is good in mind the country Then when you wanna go hire a staff from Alabama, you can pay him or How's it clamps and Nick Saban would raid my staff and I didn't have the money to compete. Clemson now has the money to compete. But if he want whoever he wants to go pay he can get. So they got facilities. They got the financial resource to get the staff and then it's a great football state and maybe the top in the California in Texas farce populations, so and there's a kind of king pins in the state. Now they haven't been It's Archy Zinkhan can do that. So it's a very cub position. Why is this so hard? Because the those money all people should give that much money to the university. You better have success early. And you better have a lot of it, and it better be more than what they were.

"Nick Saving, who was coaching up until the very last moment, even getting A penalty at the end of the game, showing his wear, making sure his guys weren't gonna let up because he wasn't either. After the game, he cooled down a little bit and talk to their Allison Williams. This was a team victory and you let him start to finish finish what stood out to you about the way your team was able to control this game. Well, you know, I was really proud of our players. They worked hard. You know, we didn't come here to finish here, so I was really proud of the way we came out to play. We didn't finish the game like would like, you know, you'd like to take the air out of it on offense. I've always got something and I'm complaining about, But anyway, it's a great team win. You know, we played well on special teams offense did a good job. Throwing the tempo of the game and defensively we got enough stops toe be able to get off the field when we needed to. So I was a great team win, and these guys have really earned the opportunity to play in the national championship game, so we'll see what we can do with it. You mentioned your defense and Notre Dame presented some different challenges for your team. What was the key to holding them to just 14 points? Well, I think that way played really good team. Defense Way got some stops when we needed to weigh controlled the quarterback as well. As well as you could do it. He's still got out of there a couple times, but we're trying to make him run sideways way Did we had success when he was able to step up didn't have much success. So there's a lot of things that goes into playing winning football on. A lot of guys have to do their job to do it on. One of those guys was romantic. Smith. How do you begin to describe the impact it has on this game? Well, he does a great job. He's a talented guys, a hard worker. I mean, does everything exactly right. He has a great understanding of what he needs to do to be a Make plays, and he makes them every chance again. So we're very fortunate to have him and he's had a great year. Yes, he has. And there is coach Saving referencing is on sportsmanlike conduct once again, just trying to light a fire under a squad even though it was an easy when I want to talk about a couple of things, and I want to start by talking about Mack Jones. This is something that was mentioned during the TV broadcast and something that Joe Andre and Holly were bringing up. You know, this guy wasn't sought after by anybody he'd originally committed to Kentucky at the last minute. A powerhouse SEC program came in swooped him and he chose Alabama. But he knew to a tongue of Milo was there. New Jalen hurts was there He didn't back down. He looked good enough that another tongue of Iowa ended up transferring to his brother. He's a Heisman finalist is well, Devante Smith deserves all the praise he gets. He was outstanding today. But it's the quiet Mack Jones that I believe makes Alabama run like a Mack truck. TRAV your thoughts on Mack Jones, maybe one of the most unheralded, considering he's Alabama's quarterback of maybe savings, Best team ever not getting the shine a lot of his other predecessors have gotten, but he seems to be as important to the tide as any one of the 85. He's not just a game manager. I think a lot of people expected him. Could be a placeholder for bright young this super recruit out of California, But he actually has become a playmaker in his own right and Zubin that I think is not just unexpected. It's a bit shocking for some people, because let's go back to last year in the Iron Bowl against Aubert to untangle Vilo was injured. So in his place is Mac Jones. Back. Jones throws to pick sixes in that game, and I don't think anybody would have imagined that in the wake of that he will come back and become a Heisman finalist. It's not just that he has Devante Smith, and for part of the season, he had jail in water, and he has not yet started about all that stuff helps. But Mack Jones made so many plays where he was being hit in the mouth by a free runner up the middle, and he delivered an accurate past deep down the field to one of those guys covered. That's what playmakers do not game managers do. Mac Jones deserves every bit of praise that he's getting, and anybody who suggests that he's successful because of the guys around him on Lee have half of it right because they're all so successful because of Joe. That's a great point because saving had been hesitant to play freshmen quarterbacks until Jalen hurts, arrived on the scene. He looked great in a lot of people said Hey, Bryce, Young as you mentioned the super recruit. Do the same after especially kind of up and down finish to the season for Jones, But he didn't just grab the job. He put a stranglehold on the job, played his prep football in Jacksonville, Florida wasn't talked about a ton like I said, took a trip. Maybe the Lexington decided the best place was T town, and now they find themselves 60 minutes away from savings. Latest college football playoff National championship. The other quick thing I wanted to mention here is it just has to be asked, And it's so cliche because you know they've shown a couple of defensive lapses. As was mentioned in the broadcast against boldness. Florida was able to go up and down the field and certainly match the tide almost for score for score. But after what you saw today Where is the Alabama weakness? The Alabama weaknesses. Linebackers covering tight ends. I expected Notre Dame to go farm or to their tight ends in this game than they did. And even though Tommy tremble got hurt, Michael Mayer was there. They had others there, and they've got a deep stable of titles that could do all kinds of stuff. And yet they only had let me see 123 just about, um, while they had in the first half. They had two throws two tight ends in the second half. Michel Mayor ended up with six catches, so they didn't throw the ball more to him in the second half, and it worked and they moved the ball, especially in that last drive that they got their second touchdown, but Think other teams I Clemson or Ohio State..
