"Our deal between the pre show and the And the You know the matches before the paper view, Part of it began and how long the entrances are and the matches are and I'm a huge wrestling fan, but splitting it into two days. The second year. They've done it. This is the first year in front of fans. They've split it into two days, and that was cool, seeing fans back in the stadium in a wrestling event yesterday. So far so good. I'm down with it. Waiting. See tonight? How tonight watching the whole thing goes. But last night was really good. W have you put on a hell of a show Last night? It was really, really good. 855 to 1 to four. CBS. Let's get another call in here before we get to Eric at home in the next segment. If you want to grab the line, feel free to do so to Alabama, we go and Matt Matt Europe on CBS Sports Radio. What's going on that Hey, How are you? Good. How are you? So doing well, Um, I've heard a lot of talk, You know about why Um Matt Jones is rising in the draft stock and people are shocked. And, uh, So I would encourage people to, you know, pull out the pope pull out the hard data and start looking at the numbers. I'm kind of a numbers guy myself. I didn't even know that. Mack Jones had the highest completion percentage of any quarterback. In college football history. Um, and he played. He played half the season without his number. One. Uh, receiver, Um on, then is his second receiver obviously was elite, but his third John Mitchie. Hey, through a lot of passes to John Metreon slave Bolden, who We're not elite receivers, and he could thread the ball with into double coverage. Um Pretty much every time. Um And I also didn't know that he had the highest Q B r rating. Which is total tote the total quarterback and how how good you are in every facet, every facet of quarterbacking, right? That he had the highest Q B R rating in the history of the Q B R, um so so numbers wise. I mean, Mack Jones is the is the Ely quarterback, and then you have everybody else that's like way behind him. So So, so I don't know where the shark comes into play of that. He's not athletic, and then he won't give you any style points. But he he did run a 469 40, which is faster than then. Some running backs. Um So, you know, maybe you just don't need him for rushing yards, but you know, so you know, but if he needed to rush, obviously he can't. He's he's very fast. Yeah. Let me let me jump in you. I mean, you make some good points. I Here's what I'll say about stats and college is and I acknowledge it. Mack Jones was doing it against the best competition that you're going to find in college football, right? I mean, there's It doesn't mean that every Sunday he's going against athletes, and he's going to see in the NFL, but he's seeing more of them in the SEC. And this year, That's all you did was play in your conference until you got to the playoffs of your Alabama and then we know what they did there. They kept winning. So he did really well in the SEC did really well against the best competition that college has to offer. I think You know the thing about stats and bringing up just the volume stats, The rushing yards and things like that. I mean, you know, Mike Leach offenses put up a bunch of stats. Doesn't necessarily mean that he's cranking out the best quarterbacks. No Mack Jones has Is good, a tools, better tools, and you're going to see anybody who came out of leeches system when he was a Texas Tech or a lot of these air raids systems that you're seeing around college football, I think with Matt Jones. It's a couple of things as far a skepticism goes, one is this is really the only year That he's been a starter. So it's a one year thing and we see see another one year guys get drafted. Hi. And then it is turning Mitchell. Too risky. Maybe the most Obvious example of that. Um You know, he started one year in North Carolina was drafted second overall, and we saw how that went. He's a backup in Buffalo now. I think the other thing with Mack Jones and I pointed this out earlier. He's kind of cursed by just how great the offense was that he played in. It sounds counterintuitive to think that like, okay, the offense was great. Shouldn't get credit for that shouldn't be drafted higher because of that. But Alabama is so good and things were run so well that NFL teams were forced to ask themselves in assess via film. How much of that is Mack Jones? And how much of that is the system? It sounds crazy to think like you might be better off as a quarterback going in playing somewhere where things don't work quite as well as they do in Alabama. That seems nuts, doesn't it? I mean, it's a compliment to Nick Saban in Alabama that that's how good their their their offense is working so well that we're not sure we can evaluate their quarterback. I think there's an element of that. You know, to a completed 72 point as far as that you the completion percentage part of it. I mean, 77% is absurd. And I watched Alabama. I know Mac Jones completed a bunch of throw strong arm down the field. I mean, there's reasons why he's being discussed as a top five pick..

"What is that, right? What would be a successful season? Or Bill O'Brien and Alabama. Yeah. Chris number two? Yep, right. No good. Did you tell? Yeah. You tell me Good. The question for two Um and Houston. Are you sure? I mean a shot, Watson. What we're being View says he goes Those two do a trial could get a fair trial in Houston. If he says he does it. Get a fair trial, Houston They're used to mean being being divided. And just my comments afterwards, My comment would be Uh, Thing. I'm hang on. Hang on, Manny. What You mean by Houston being divided? Well. With how he's in his is Being hurt by design walking out. I'm on the pad of Houston. Yeah, just literally walked walking out. Do you get a first round eastern? Okay, That's it. I just want to make sure that's what let me answer these Manny because I want to get these in before the top of the I appreciate the phone call that that's the interesting angle I have heard of. Look, let me just say, I don't know that it's going to get to trial. I know that. Both lawyers are saying they want to go to trial, Rusty Hardin at a press conference on Friday. He's too Sean Watson's attorney. In the very last thing he was asked was Do you see your you? Forget the exact question, but It was about going to trial, and Rusty said he's absolutely ready to go to trial. To fight these 22 plaintiffs that are suing to Shawn Watson. I never really thought about the angle of Kenny Get a fair trial in Houston, you know, due to football fans wind up on that jury, I think is where Manny was going with that. You know, the jury selection process is there to vet those kind of things? So you know, no more or less so than other human factors enter into the equation. When it comes to selecting a jury. And what do you hope that a jury looks at the evidence and then decides what to do civil or criminal try and bid to be clear there. No criminal charges have been brought against to Shawn Watson yet. As far as Bill O'Brien. What would be a successful year in Alabama for him is the offensive coordinator. Do not go backwards. Tonto, and I'm saying not go backwards to have Alabama's offense. Not all of a sudden look like it's being run by somebody else to make sure that the offense looks like Alabama offenses have looked over the last I'll say the last, like five or six years, you know, ever since Ever since Nick Saban. Has kind of turned the Alabama offensive coordinator position. Into almost it's almost like the coordinator coaching version of like a fixer upper It takes these distressed coaching assets like Brian Day Ball. And Lane Kiffin. And Steve Sarkisian. And now Bill O'Brien. When you think about it. These are all guys that were maybe not, you know, the trajectory on their coaching career had either plateaus flattened her. It started to go downhill for a variety of different reasons. Obviously, Steve Sarkisian's reasons were different than Lane Kiffin's reasons. And yet every coach that's come through there in the last six or seven years, has wound up with a gigantic green arrow up pointed next to their name. You know, Brian tables thought to be one of the hottest offensive coordinators in the NFL in Buffalo with Josh Allen. I didn't get a head coaching job this time around, but I think it's still viewed as a A good candidate, especially Buffalo is really good again this year. Link. If it is the head coach at Ole Miss, We just got an extension. Steve Sarkisian just got the UT job. The tech that the University of Texas job he just got that job. It's one of the best jobs in college football. So these are all guys that kind of went into the Alabama OC position with really some question marks swirling around them, and they came out the other side as this shined up new asset. Does this mean Bill O'Brien's going to go get a head coaching job in the NFL or the high level college in the NFL? I tend to doubt it. At least any time soon. But in college could I see Bill O'Brien getting a really good college job after a year to Alabama? Absolutely. I could And I don't think Bill O'Brien's this great coach or anything like that. But I don't think any of these other guys were great coaches either, and they did just fine with all that talent in Alabama, so The answer. The question is, they can't be where Alabama goes nine and four this year, and people say the offense was the problem. That's the answer..

"The big NFL draft comes your way. April 29 through May, the first in Cleveland, Ohio. And I'm a big college football guy, even though common football does not bring big up here in the Northeast, But listen to sit sports Sunday years ago. You know how the weekly guy on who was terrific at it. Terrific. He's my dear friend Jolie See, he's got the best college football website anywhere in the country anywhere in the world. Go for the two dot com. Now he's involved with sports. Great like my buddy Scott for l and you've got a big NFL special coming up, Joe. First of all, Good morning. Good afternoon. Tell everybody about this big special coming up. Oh, thanks, Love talking college and pro football with you. We have to sports Great NFL draft special coming on the first night of the draft on serious section Channel 2048 to 12 midnight. Awesome. That's gonna be great because you're great. You're handsome and smart and loving. You came into the old studios by Madison Square Garden. We chatted about college football's. Let's get right to it. We're about a week ago, The Jets made this big trade. They traded away their third year quarterback Sam Donald to Carolina, and I've told people all week Joe that was called an opportunity trade. That's my opinion. What I mean by that is If the Jets had the number 20 pick in the draft, Sam Donald is still their quarterback. But being they had a very early pick, and they seem to love this kid out of BYU. This became an opportunity trade and the judge did it, And I think it's because again they love the bee while you quarterback. What do you thoughts on the trade and this specific kid, Zach Wilson. Well, I think the trade to your point and meaning if they were 15 or less, I think you know we're about 15 to 32. They wouldn't be trading up. They would be looking not not at the quarterback in any capacity, but and Sam don't know. Would be the quarterback of the future for the New York Jetson in 2021 or 2022, but you know, to have the second pick overall and to have the type of quarterback Class that we have said. I mean, it's gonna be interesting. I'm not sold on Zach Wilson. I think he's overrated. A little inconsistent at this point in his career, so we'll see our plays out. Let's talk about the guy that's going to go number one. For sure. There's no doubt about that. And that is Clemson product TRAVEL. Lawrence Urban Meyer starts his new NFL career first time is the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. He's going to keep Trevor up in Northern Florida. Do you think that this is a can't miss that trouble? Lawrence? We'd like a like a Peyton Manning type of pick. Well, we'll see. I still think he's a little raw, but head and shoulders above the rest in terms of the other quarterbacks in the class. If we're breaking down, Zach Welles, we're breaking down. Trevor Laurence. I pick Trevor launches the guy that you want to start your franchise. And if your urban Meyer starting in your number one, he's a big kid 66 around £235. He's a mobile quarterback won a national championship as a freshman said, And you know, he did struggle with consistency issues. Sophomore junior year, But he sticks those. The upside is huge. For Trevor, Launch strongest arm in this NFL class, Jo Lisa go for the two dot com and sports could getting you ready now, about two weeks away. From the NFL draft. We just watch one of the most prolific offenses in the history of college football. As Nick Saban won his seventh championship in Alabama ran roughshod all season long. They had the Heisman Trophy Award winner and wide receiver Devante Smith. Big time running back whenever you like. And Nagy, Harris and Matt Jones had a great career in Alabama, Do you think that translates Success on Sundays because the truth is whether it's been Ohio State, but fields coming out or Alabama with Jones coming out. Neither one of those schools has produced a big NFL quarterback in quite some time. Yeah, Great point. I think it's the type of scheme that you want to run. And if we look at the team within the number three overall pick in San Francisco and Kyle Shanahan he's on. Lee had traditional drop back passers Matt Ryan when he was the offensive coordinator with Atlanta at Jimmy Garoppolo that he took to the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs. And that's what he has if they select Matt Jones now I'll trade this about Mack Jones said. I've been a big believer job Roos type of money. The numbers last year completed 77% of his passes, stepped up in big games, a match judges and under the radar quarterback, and not a lot of people talking about him were believed in him. I think if he goes to San Francisco, it's a great fit. Now, when you look at Justin Fields in my opinion, second best quarterback in this class Behind trouble, Lawrence. If I was in New York jets, I would go Justin Fields over Zach Wilson. Now give me one of these other quarterbacks. That will come later, A train lands a Kyle Trask at Florida. What a horrible game against Oklahoma, which I'd like to have the Sooners that night in the ball game and guy like Jamie Newman, any one of these guys, you think translates to a big talent on Sundays. We'll keep an eye out for Kyle Trask. You know he could possibly sneak into the first round. A lot of rumblings with New Orleans and Sean Payton love this kid. He's about 65 £239 about the 10th game in college. She's and Kyle Trask was better than Matt Jones better than Justin Fields. He was the guy that was doing it all through for over 40 touchdown passes and played well. Are in the S E. C championship game against top ranked Alabama threw for three touchdowns. If he goes to the right type of steam, he has huge upside. So keep an eye out for Kyle Trask. I'm not sold on Trey Lance. I know the numbers. I know the size, but he played it the FCS level one year. I think he's a one hit wonder. He's the most overhyped quarterback in this draft class, Jolie see Go for the two dot com Best college football website in the world and, of course sports. Great. He's got a big head about special coming up night, one of the draft. Comes your way. April the 29th on Sirius XM Running backs, You know you got the kid again. I mentioned John J. Harrison, Alabama. The Clemson kid had a great career there any one of these running backs give me 11 or two running backs. And while you're at it, Joe, give me wanted to wide receivers that you think will be big players at the next level. Well, yeah, I mean, letting Max you hit the two bastards in the class Now. Jay Harris Privacy fiend from Clemson. If you're asking me, there's a prop that out there. I think Travis TPN does go over now. Jay Harris, not Jay Harris. Is Derrick Henry to point? No, I still think he's a little raw six to around 2 30..

Alabama vs. Ohio State: Best of college football's national championship game

"Last night, Alabama wrapped up the college football season beating Ohio State the national championship game 52 to 24 behind one of the transcendent performances we've ever seen. In the national championship game from wide receiver Devante Smith, the Heisman Trophy winner had 12 catches 215 yards and three touchdowns. Nick Saban becomes the first to win national titles in three different decades, seven titles overall for saving in his coaching career, six in the last 12 years alone. According to reports with Alabama looking for an offensive coordinator or Steve Starkey Z and moving on to Texas. There's talk that Bill O'Brien will be Alabama's Next. Oh,

How to break up Nick Saban's monopoly at Alabama to improve college football

"Today headline How to break up savings monopoly in Alabama to save college football. And the opening line of the piece said. Is this what we want college football to be? Saving, winning it all at least every other year, mixed in with an occasional title for Clemson or Ohio State and half the country west of Kansas, having little reason to tune in. I mentioned last night's ratings all time low in the college football playoff era. Least watched national championship game of the playoff era 27% off last year's numbers. There is a there is a fatigue. To dominance. For whatever reason. This is like clockwork when when a team wins. It is really good year after year after year. Some get tired of it. The dynasty that dominates turns into fatigue. Um If you don't like Alabama, winning naturally, and the fact is, as I mentioned earlier, Nick Saban has more national championships than the 129 FBS coaches combined. Think of that. For a second. He's got seven. That's more than all the active coaches if he added of altogether that seems impossible. They've won six of the last 12. Alabama's one half the BCS and college football playoff championships.

"Because he's looks a little bigger and stronger and he Has that same kind of leaser beam passing ability he can diagnose plays quickly he can make adjustments on the fly. He can do all those things and he does it with a certain kind of like gunslinger thing that is infectious for the team. I believe he does it with his brett. Farve and aaron rodgers had a baby. But like rogers is. You can't really point something that mahomes rogers can't do that. Those two guys can do physically things on the field. No one else who ever lived can do consistently like them and rodgers on a very good packers team there. Peaking at the right time the defense has come together. He has offensive weapons not like mahomes but he's got weapons. Davante adams is no joke. But he's got for a guy with a bye in the first round and who does who doesn't have to go to new orleans. If it gets that far they'll have to go to the frozen tundra boy. You have some rough sledding to get to a super bowl. aaron rodgers will have to be a rams defense that is as talented any defense in the league and playing well and then potentially a box or saints team and then potentially achieve the super bowl for a team with the first row bible. That's rough sledding. Meantime dan orlovsky on get up this morning. I was watching it with drinking my coffee. Watching get up and dan orlovsky came in and did a lot of brilliant stuff on the air. Today broke down. That jones tape broke down just in fields tape for the purpose purposes of this conversation. Had some really interesting analysis on the rams chances.

"If i just said join me on the goodyear hotline that would be ridiculous. This is cova days. Ladies and gentleman. So i'm in new york and my producer. Raj is in la and alabama just wanted sixth national title in a dozen years. They win the championship of college football on average once every other year just when it looked like look i know urban meyer and this one and that look bottom line is davos sweeney was the guy and clemson was the program that over the last half decade made. It seem like The nick sabin arizona over the alabama's ariza over. Maybe it's a new era. Where they're like co captains right but they ain't heads and shoulders above everyone else anymore. Clemson oh their head and shoulders over everyone. All right just like that just like like this. You're that that's me snapping into a microphone just like that alabama's and again and they went bell to bell. They went wire-to-wire. Lot of talk people arguing on first about asterisks. You know what's interesting about this year. Twenty twenty and the championships of the twenty twenty season. Now in two thousand twenty one. What happened who won. Because the lakers were favored by the public to win the championship and wire-to-wire there were the best team in the nba. No one took him seven games and they won the championship. Alabama was favored and wire-to-wire they the best team in college football destroyed. The sec had a very tough schedule. Beat the hell outta everyone and got crowned national champions in a route the los angeles dodgers who've been knocking on the championship door for years. Now got even better. Had an enormous budget huge market team playing with analytics. Playing money ball with money were heavily favored to win and they did. They won the world series. I don't know. I mean. I know this was a very trying year but in sports. There's no asterisk championships here. The teams the traditional powerhouses. Who were also supposed to win. This year did just that. they'll surprising. Outcomes dodgers lakers alabama. It's chalk chalk. Nick sabin meantime seven national titles six with alabama passes paul bear bryant on the all time list and you win the national championship game over ohio state just in fields of a highest data. Just put it on clemson. The previous week threw six touchdown passes over four hundred yards of offense from justin field alabama. Whip them fifty two to twenty four. That's at some coaching there. And by the way. I know college. Coaching is much to do about recruiting. Okay that's part of the job. Strict description well knicks. I'll someone else had the meyer all that talent or dabbled sweeney at all that then. Yeah sure of course. Yeah mix save. It's better recruiting two. Yes nick sabin. What do you think coach. Congratulations on your championship. And what do you think about this. Strange covid season high told his team in the very beginning. We're going to have a lot of disruptions that the team that handles the disruptions the best has the team that's going to have the best chance to be successful in the end and this team really did it and if you talk to the players they actually say that a lot of the disruptions and a lot of the things that we weren't able to do whether we're spring practice or summer or whatever. It was actually made the team closer and we became a better team because of some of the disruptions which i was actually surprised to hear but certainly they demonstrate that and the way they compete and play. Adversity can absolutely be a bonding experience. You can see this in boxing latouche championship fighters in a vicious brutal. Fight a grudge match but at the end of the fight they hug it out because you not only go through it against someone you go through with them right and this adversity can do that. It can bring teams closer together. It can destroy teams to but if the team has character and leadership it can bring them closer together. That's what happened with. Alabama max kellerman show. Espn radio is presented by progressive insurance. Make it easy to bundle your home and car. Insurance aaron rodgers to me is the. Mvp season is the best season he's ever had like. That doesn't have a space in my brain. Jared goff is the most important player in the nfc playoffs. Richard be any credibly. Difficult challenge for green bay. The thing about jared goff. Sam darnold the thing about a lot of quarterbacks office jumped darnold. He's better. But the thing about quarterbacks like i still don't know if enough years go by and you still don't know you know. Well what about ryan tannehill. Yes. there are exceptions. But i wouldn't take that too. I wouldn't take those exceptions to the bank. I wouldn't bet on him. I would bet that if you don't know you know like for example after four or five years. Did you know about aaron rodgers. Gave brett farve. Aaron rodgers the ball and half decade into aaron rodgers career to wait a while it hold that clip for a while. There was no like i wonder. If there's aaron rodgers guys going to pan out no you about rogers. Goth is what he is. He is a solid average. Starting quarterback maybe a tick above average. He has the ability to play very well. Especially if you use play action. He is not a superstar quarterback but who aaron rodgers. Sure is aaron rodgers. You know. I believe mahomes is the best i've ever seen. But he replaced aaron rodgers on my list and i can't really prove it with mahomes in other words anything mahomes can do. Rodgers can do also he can make all the same place all the same throws if i have to choose one. I take mahomes..

Ah crimson Tide, when would be the sixth national title on her head coach Nick Saban, But he knows the Buckeyes have an explosive offense. The combination of The explosive ability that I have in the passing game quarterback and run or pass and can make all the throws. "I mean, you're you're super involved now with the NBC and I love that Craig Robinson's done a phenomenal phenomenal job taking over being active. Like I feel like that organization was dormant for years and he's done a great job. And I know you you're involved in that you've been involved in some other things because otherwise your wife's going to I mean, like like there's no way if you're not doing something. What do you get going to be annoying her? Well, she know what first of all she's really busy and and everybody with with the zoom meetings and everything where you know, I mean one party email. She's another you know, we got the we have to find out what when I can walk in and out of the kitchen, you know, because she's there in that area. So we gotta get our schedules coordinated, but but you're right just you know, as far as the dog See, you know, the National Association of Basketball Coaches is our governing body, you know for all of our divisions all divisions of college basketball and we're very proud of the association and I'm I'm very proud to be on the board of directors of that. I've been on that now for for a while and and now that you mentioned Craig being on new executive director and he's doing as you said so well a tremendous job of like us and supporting us, you know, we have great leadership and you know take anything away from Jim Haney, you know, but Craig is jumping in now and Baton has been passed to him and and we're proud to be a part of it together and I want a few committees. Actually. I'm on I'm co-chair myself and Frank Martin from South Carolina. We co-chair the racial reconciliation committee, which is a very important job that was created after the George Floyd murder and I was asked to share that and I was wow, you know, it was really blown away that I was asked to do it and but we've taken initiatives, you know, we've been fighting for certain things with them. Organization to help you know us to you know, bring about change to make a difference, you know in our society and through basketball, you know, whether that's the elimination of trying to take on elimination of old SAT and ACT test standardized test, you know, we're doing things when we were heavily involved with other coaches as well with voter registration, you know, some different things that have come up, you know come down and I have been a part of you know, something as anchor coaches for another initiative. That was his his baby in his brainchild is called a John McLendon minority leadership under the name that you guys, you know know who and and Bob you probably you probably knew, you know, coach McLendon. I wish I did know I didn't yeah. Oh totally well aware of. Yes, just the legendary faith. And and so we're we're you know, we have that's a coach driven initiative. You know, we're all coaches. We have Patrick Ewing. We have Coach K. We have Dabo swinney's Nick Saban football basketball. What channel is the one he and I have kind of been the anchor coaches, but it's been he's driven. It has been his idea. And that's something that we're bringing about having minorities more minorities women and men wage being having exposure and access and opportunity on athletic campuses to become Future Leaders, you know, we've talked about how do we get more? You know black people African Americans minorities in leadership positions. Well, this is one of the ways that we can try to do that to help diversify athletic departments.

"Stephen smith welcome back from touchdown. Alabama stephen amit always good to see you and great to have you on the program. So it's the week of the iron bowl you've been high on the tide. Since the first time we talked during the summer. let's start with mag jones because you told us. He was different than that was before the public. In the heisman voters fell in love with him. Absolutely i mean. The young man has been battle tested poise and career. I remember him in the us. Freshmen in two thousand seventeen with the scout team out there throwing bombs and of course coach saban told him stop throwing the ball deep all the time. King looks at cope sabres coach. Tell your defense a check me there so you got a guy with that type about and that type of confidence even check his own coach. Nick sabin that you got yourself a quarterback that can really do some special things. So i knew from mack. Jones the freshman that he was poised to this moment but also seeing the growth that he's made targeted stephen m. smith who stephen m. seems like every every aspect of alabama has gotten better the one that has surprised when people is the is the defense. Because after the ole miss game i i wasn't sure that p golden should be buying green bananas. But what's happened on that side of the ball. The main thing is coke. Sabin and pete goading have done a great job. Simplifying things on times player stink too much. You think about my job and is my teammate. Doing his job. It's the guy in front of me. The guy behind me the guy next to me doing their job. And when you're thinking about so many things of your job is and training your is to be district where confusion comes in so nick. Saban has always been one to say. Do your job and the rest will take care of itself. So she and goading been a great june above of simplifying. The game plan players have done their job. You're seeing more pressure on defense guys stopping the run better. More turnovers created a the big thing here. Paul is essentially omits game. You've looked eleven. Shutout quarters football alabama including a complete game shutout of mississippi state and the team is getting off the theater on third down so a better job of simplifying the game plan and players. You know being concerned about doing their job correctly. It's interesting. we haven't really heard much in the aftermath of jason water when he went down some of the pundits. I remember somebody. Espn said alabama was done. They had no chance of winning the national championship. How has that been dealt with on the team. Because it doesn't seem like and i realized alabama has played a top five team Yet they will seem like they've done quite well without him. I remember a conversation. I had with john. Michie paul about you know. How do you feel. Avoid behind by waddell. He's a one type player. Barry explosive guy would. He got hurt against the volunteers. You heard coach. Sabe say you know. I hurt for college football. Not the fact that saving hearts for alabama. I'm sure he pretty much does but he hurts for college. Football due to people enjoy seeing james waddell on the field. He's fast he's a bottle he's gone. He's energetic he's explosive. He's highly entertaining. Obama has found ways to work. Around this. you've seen slade. Boden return be on kickoffs. Of course he got a twisted ankle against kentucky alabama monitoring jam all week and practice. He should be able to go this week. But we'll see what happens We have seen devante. Smith retiring ponts against kentucky patrick satanic. A second has also field in that role a little bit so save has put he and different guys and that special teams role to try to you know. Fill that void but it's worked out for the most part. It is difficult trying to find that guy that can do know what j. waddell does

Some probably got it from one of his his cream pies that eats every morning. Okay now. Weather I took a right turn where my brain was is this am I freaking out a little bit to be like Nick Sabin can't get the cocoa got Nick Sabin is an impenetrable force of all diseases and fun It might just be him when it's been more time recruiting. This gives them valuable time around his phone. He's just misteri coach on the sidelines for him yet or maybe put the scissor lift like the high school coaches. have him down there Brian Kelly would do assist lift Notre Dame up so That was kind of the big story nick. Saban's got the cocoa I guarantee that they're at least six Alabama fans have signed up for waiting lists to donate their lungs to Nick Sabin if it comes to that easily also get Steve Sarkisian now coaching on Saturday night which should be hilarious. If Alabama loses does account is it is this a coach K. thing does Nick Sabin not get this on his record do do when we when we do the playoff committee can we say well, that one loss not nick Sabin, I wasn't count on ironically think yes I think Nick Sabin we'll get in front of. The press and say exactly that be like, Hey, guess what that wasn't my team Della Steve Circasians team and did you see him at Washington USC? Exactly? Is there a possibility of the hugh freeze game like? A hospital and saw hospital room in the stadium. I would imagine I know Nick Sabin. Technically I can't have any contact with the team but I would imagine he's going to be coaching somehow someway somehow some way he's going to be coaching on Saturday night he's probably got the greatest like in in the ultimate twists he's got the greatest technology ever in his a- Batman Cave in his in his house I mean they sits there with all the TV's and he's ready to. Go. So it says that you can't have any technological contact with the team, but could he start like a big ass bonfire outside the stadium incense smoke signals up into the air or maybe maybe a Tornado Siren? Yes. Goes off Morse Code Tornado. Siren. Why not show I do think that like Nick Sabin is definitely like he's worth seven points and yet game. So if they lose by fewer than seven points then I would say this does not count as loss yeah I'd agree. So we have NFL week six, we have no Thursday night football kind of weird I agree with what you said on Wednesday show pf Thi this the way the schedule is working out the surprise football like Monday night, we have another double Monday night. We do have arch manning playing tonight Oh. Yeah. Archie grandson which further. On. ESPN to walk fuels are take that. Archie. Manning. Is The shadow commissioner canceled Thursday night football. "Hope you have a good time watching the draft and we appreciate your time as always okay. Dan Thank you take care. That's that's nick. Saban Alabama head coach. Jan just to recap Nick Sabin told us Ten minutes ago he has never sent an email. In this life he has also never sent a text and receives both he just started receiving emails. He's received tax and then he calls the person people are quite bothered by this. Well I like when somebody calls me every time. We'll there times when I don't want to hear from people but it's nice to get a phone call occasionally because my kids once again. I can text them and they'll respond. I call them. They don't answer. This is like saying though you still have dial up or you still flip phone. This is like Angela slip from people are either calling bs or trouble by Nick. Saban saying he does not send anything interesting not know how to respond to it or does he think it's more polite to return the email with phone call. I got the impression he wasn't sure how to actually do the sending of email. I think that that's probably the case I. I don't think he wants to adjust to modern life where you're sending out text all the time and his instagram and his facebook and all of those just. He's what sixty eight years of age? And if he hasn't learned now feel like he unless he's trying to stay in touch with recruits or his players. You know that that's a convenient way of saying. Hey just checking in making sure you're okay because you know I'm I'm the king of very very limited dialogue returning text message. You'll get a thumbs up or the letter. K that is true. Yes yes point but I saw comedian. A few years ago says said that every person eventually gives up on modern technology. They learn nothing else sir. Aj All right. I'm good whatever I've learned so far and beers at Nick Saban. I wonder if he has a person text back for him if he needs to. Not Designated Texter. Yeah like Jerry. Jones has guy does his glasses when he's in the box but that was his son who did his glasses. I think inheritance. Yeah got to do something in that job yes mclovin. It's funny you say like phone calls. Everyone says phone calls are out. People will not talk on the phone. They will only well. I'm talking about my kids. It's nice to get a phone call from my kids. I don't need it that often but like I have one daughter who facetime me all the time and you know. It's great that she does it. It's just you know I. I don't want to be on camera even though it's on just don't want to do it. And then what I do is I put it up to my ear occasionally and I'm on facetime so she'll go dad. I can look in your ear and I'm GonNa go facetime stuff. Yes todd. What about texting from one room to another when you WANNA get up in the middle of something kind of lazy as it gets when you're letting your kid notes dinnertime and they're in? The baseball wasn't but I've done that if they're upstairs and they might not here and then I'll just check so I don't want to walk up the steps but it's not like they're next store like the room twelve feet away. I got to go in there and say Dinner yes I still do. The keep saying their name but just get progressively louder a hundred and fifty times until someone. Here's Karen Karen Karen here. Instead I could just walk into the other room but instead I just yelled name like just go get him. My youngest daughter has the hearing of a dog like unbelievable unbelievable. She can hear all the things that she shouldn't here except for when I call her to do something. And I can't like Molly Amol Moser Molly a molecule and then you realize and then I'd say to my wife. I thought she had great hearing she goes. She's great selective hearing. I could be whispering something about her and then she'll I heard that you can't hear me call her dinner. What'd you say all right? We'll take a break last call phone calls here and what's in store tomorrow? What we learned. I think that's it's enough and by the way. Did you guys see that we have some spaghetti cooking air in the man cave? Did you see the sauce the Sunday gravy? We have a pasta contest that I created yesterday where I said two guys in the bag I brought up a conversation about Sunday gravy and how my mother in Law God rest your soul made absolute delicious under gravy? Having spent so much money down there. That's a mess. Molly concern. I have I have not beat down. But I tell you what is some nice digs around here, man. I'm very familiar with these parts, but but to actually be I was talking to Reese Dave's earlier today. And I said man, I never thought I'd be on on south beach in a suit talking about college football. It's weird. But as good. Well, it just the ark of your career has had in the last few months, Marcus, you've been a lot of places. Well, great to have you on. Let me ask you about the big news today out of New Orleans. And that's that the great quarterback. The Andre Baker is not going to play in the Sugar Bowl. We seen this so many times at other games. But the the Sugar Bowl still the sugarbowl. What do you make of that fall is it's the dynamic we live in now man, this part of the world we live in especially when you're talking about guys like the Baker who has the potential to be top ten picks. And I think the college football playoff in a way has disregarded the rest of the bowl games. That's not not involved. We still hold them to a high regard and hold them to a high standard in this opportunity for them to showcase their skill one more time, but for a lot of these guys they're not playing for national championship. I don't think they are incentivized to just go and say I won the Sugar Bowl or potentially suffering injury in the. Bowl when you weren't in the chase of a national championship came off a beer physical game against Alabama is will very devastating loss. And for where he's projected and for what his future looks like it doesn't surprise me at all. And we'll continue to see more of this happened. The college football playoff in two parts created this. But also think that we've been having all this discussion about expansion if you expand the college football playoff usually good players playing vying for national championships, and we will get a chance to see more of these guys play. I'm not a big proponent of expanding it, but that would be one of the symptoms that would be one of the remedies. But keep it some of these star studded players invested in their last year in college to get them to finish out strong. And Nick Saban said it today in one of his interviews Marcus that if you expand the playoff you're going to marginalize, these games even more in, and I know you you played in the Sugar Bowl and that won the national championship. Scored a touchdown. And it just seems like and I realize we're sounding old school here. But. It's just amazing to think about even the Sugar Bowl losing one of its top players. But but if if the field is expanded like savings said you do you agree. I mean, some of these games which are barely hanging on today. What are they going to look like? When you expand you expand to more bones. I don't I don't I don't agree with Nick when he says that the expansion is not to water it down. No matter what the town. Whether we go from four to six to eight the night, the the the ninth bowl game. Whatever is considered to be the ninth game or the ninth best team. That's not buying for national championship. Yeah. That bowl will get watered down as well. As the one that's considered to be the fifth placed team in the country right now as we're seeing with the dri Baker and Nick both decided to leave early I noticed the different circumstance, but.

Because you you, you know, they're going to win. You don't know behind much out. Saturday would be his biggest test simply for the fact that the LSU had some momentum. And you know, that they beat the heck out of out of Georgia and they had with coming to their place. And everybody's saying I'm ahead to played anybody as good as LSU and the one question Mark are had was defense. LSU's not great on offense. You know, they're struggling they don't have the athletes that they'll have an years they continue to earth. But then I was domination. They're front four remind me of our mind thing here's ago when I worked for me, we never had the fluids. We never had the rush with four guys. There's nobody could flocks and mixed. Got it the same way there. Now, they they're just rolling them defense. And you don't have to talk about the offense it they he's changes philosophy with his quarterback. And then. You know, they're going to school in the thirties. At least most of the time. I most anybody they've placed so it's really become unfair and taken all the fun of November in the championship game. And even I just I don't see anybody unless it's gonna be Clinton that might have a chance to play with four weeks ago. And in having answer circle the wagons. But man, they're good. As was seen as they've got running backs. They've got off into blind is getting better and better, and they pretty much stayed healthy. So you know, you know, they uneasily skipping in. You know, I'm I love to watch college football people, and I don't get to how one one team, but this proved now they're they're they're unbelievable. And I mean, this has been going for for some time now and let me try to put you in Nick Sabin shoes for a moment. I I'm running out of words to describe him as you have. But at this point what what else does he have to accomplish coach? I mean, let's say wins another championship here. Do you think? He just keeps keeps racking them up, or or do you think something else interest in whether I mean, they're all kinds of reports out there that that somebody will make another run at him from the NFL by giving him a piece of a franchise. I mean, these are all rumors, and nobody really knows whether he would do that or not you take to leave to behind..

"The biggest improvement that defense can make then I can hear what? You said what's the biggest improvement that defense can make this, journey guys loose. When you see somebody won't an open and nobody's covering. Him somebody messed up I think for your, time thank you That was with Maria Taylor by the way. Kudos for her that that's not easy, that's not easy when things go well but all of a sudden Nick Saban decided kind kinda in the. Middle of that conversation that he was he was getting hot. About all the quarterback conversations and. Look he was getting them all summer he got him. In the production meetings ahead of time he got him on, ESPN game day on TV. Earlier today And it's a reasonable question by her, to ask afterward about. His assessment on where he's at the. Quarterback situation good and good follow up by her I mean a lot of she. Wasn't intimidated nobody that that is a hard job that is a hard and she did a great job and that. That, is the sound bite of the night no, question about it Alabama a winner fifty one fourteen over Louisville you Mr. the big other game we've been talking. "Maybe people confusing like getting it wrong to I am and then you of you close it with Nick Saban, reflecting in his place in the world and this legacy, and you. How come those the latter. Those thoughts seem to come to him on a dock surrounded by kids and never mind, podium, meaning that like, don't you think that maybe blending a little bit more into the podium would would go a long way to kind of eliminate this confusion. I think it's hard for him to kind of downshift into like relaxed vacation, Nick mode. They when I was when I did get to go down and talk to him, the joke around the office was, is he is he and vacation Nick mode, or is he in working mode? And they were like, kinda like just come back from vacation the day before, like he's kinda in between like he's not quite occasion coach right now. So I think it's that he did explain that when he's on the lake. It's like one of the few places in the whole world. Maybe the only place where he can kind of relax and he doesn't mean doesn't thinking about football, but it is. He is able to sort of step back and like think about the bigger picture life and read a book and watch a TV show. I explained early on just in saying who I was that I was from Montana, grew up there and immediately was like, oh, have you seen the the series Yellowstone, Kevin, Costner going on mythical? You have watched a piece of it like, yeah, Terry or just that's what we were doing. Kinda watching on Netflix late at night. And I think like if you if you, if you went to Nick savings, press conference every single day and you hung around him, you'd probably see a little bit more like humanity that you that's like in this piece. But if you're not someone who's like Alabama and beat writer, if you're just like seeing him after you know games or seeing him on sidelines, you have a very kind of, I think, narrow picture of who saving is, and you know, it's kind of probably colored by his most intense moments. And so if you're able to kind of step back and sort of consider the whole of Nick Sabin, which I think maybe hopefully this story, it's it's going against type a little bit. It's trying to show you that he does have you know a human side. It's just that he isn't really gonna show that in like the twenty second clip you see on sportscenter after the national championship game, right? It's like how they way you can like they've created the confusion. Like when you see a photo of Bill check hanging with. Girlfriend wearing a Halloween costume or like rocking out to Bon Jovi like it seems jarring because he's cree- because in the opportunities had interact. He's created the difference, right? Yeah. I mean, you know, I think that what I like about saving is in some ways he's not like a moralist. He doesn't sort of acting like he's, you know, the person who's out here, you know, better than anyone else shaping molding, young men like there's some of that, but a lot of it is just like, I'm here to win football games. And I'm here because I wanna give you an option graduate and what you do with that is up to you. And so I think that's kind of out of all a lot of times where football coaches maybe get themselves into trouble where they act as though they are sort of these great moulders of young men and their above. It all their those sort of moral beacon of the universe or university anyway, and and then when something goes sideways for them, you see, maybe they aren't quite living up to that claim that's went out. Out of people feel like, well, you're a hypocrite and I think at least say he sort of more or less like, you know what? What you see is kind of what you got. I'm hard and I'm tough, but I'm fair. As we mentioned, what the doc in the lake and is in his..

Remember subscriber double truck stories podcast on the ESPN app apple podcast, or wherever you listen to podcasts. Glares shouts. I rolls and the occasional dressing-down of his team to the media and not to mention more than a few national championships. That's the amount of Nick Sabin that most people get to see. But as these fourteen stories will tell you this far more deaths than humanity than meets the eye stick around after the story for my conversation with ESPN senior writer, Kevin van Valkenburgh as we talk about how famously hard coach has been a great person right under our noses. Now we present Nick Sabin is more than a scowl by Kevin van Valkenburgh. Nick Sabin is more than a scowl. The most powerful man in college football raises a skeptical eyebrow when he, here's the question. His glare feels like it could crack one of the crystal trophies in his office. Two seconds of silence passes. It feels like two minutes. What is something Nick? Sabin thinks people get wrong about Nick Saban. Finally, a hint of a smile creeps across his face. He removes his reading glasses and folds his hands in front of his Chan interlocking his fingers. One of the things that bothered me a little through the years is I don't think the perception that people have of me as a coach is really truly who I am as a person Sabin says, I'm always portrayed as the tough grinding working hard guy, and I think those things are true, but there is more than that, and I don't think people realize that after winning two hundred eighteen games and six national championships after spending more than a decade as the men, everyone in the sport is both chasing and trying to emulate. It would be easy to assume Sabin at sixty six years old does not see flaws in his own methods but ask him if there is anything he wishes he could change about himself, animals it for a full beat. I always pray that I won't get angry. He says, because most of the time when I get angry. Or emotional. I don't make good decisions. Sometimes I appear to be angry as a coach, but I'm not really angry people don't remember what you say. They remember how you made them feel. I think I've gotten a little better at that, but there is definitely room for improvement. The more questions you ask the more it's apparent that yes, there are things that people get wrong about Nick Sabin. Yes, there are the requisite tales of Sabin snarling a player for missing a block or at an assistant coach for what he believes was a boneheaded play call. But those might be the least interesting tales. Anyone can tell about Alabama's, mercurial coach, the best Nick Sabin stories like the fourteen that follow do more than eliminate..
