"AP sports, I'm Ben Thomas, on a big day in college football and the big game had Ohio State hosting Michigan. Then in cap on how it played out. CFP number three Michigan stuns number two Ohio State 45 23 JJ McCarthy threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns and ran in another to help Michigan outscore Ohio State 28 three in the second half and approved a 12 clinching a spot in the Big Ten championship game. Job's not finished. We got so much more to do. CJ Stroud sauce for 349 yards and two touchdowns, but it was too late interceptions that sealed the buckeyes fate, Ohio State drops to 11 and one. Number one, Georgia overcame a slow start to beat Georgia Tech 37 14 and finish another undefeated regular season one number four TCU crushed Iowa state 62 14. But Michigan's decisive victory over Ohio State does offer some hope for playoff aspirants. Correspondent Mark Myers reports in USC took a giant step closer with a 38 27 win over Notre-Dame. Quarterback Caleb Williams encountered for four touchdowns, one passing in three running for the now 11 in one Trojans. Williams is now considered the leading candidate to capture the Heisman Trophy. But LSU tripped up falling to Texas a and M 38 23 head coach Brian Kelly. We just, for some reason, we're off today. In Clemson lost by a point to South Carolina, Alabama took the iron bowl 49 27 over auburn, coach Nick Saban says, despite two losses, the crimson tide merit playoff consideration. This team didn't give up on themselves. They didn't give up on each other. They kept fighting and won some tough games. Tennessee thrashed Vanderbilt 56 to nothing while Oregon state stunned Oregon 38 34. In the NBA, the raptures Lakers rockets and sons all winners, the NHL, oilers, hurricanes, blues, Maple Leafs, Devils, islanders, avalanche and Canucks at the World Cup Argentina over Mexico, France towns, Denmark, Australia beat Tunisia and Poland topped Saudi Arabia. Fresh update on "nick saban" discussed on The Paul Finebaum Show

"Else. So that matter on the road this weekend, Marty McGee starts at new nation and then the football final. We're talking about the SEC championship game. And we are back with Richard and Spencer, and as we come back, let's share with you the breaking news from auburn that it is now official that Hugh freeze has been named the auburn head coaches has been speculated all afternoon long. The school just tweeted out a picture of you free saying, welcome home. From auburn. Well, I guess welcome home to the SEC. I'm not positive of that. I didn't touch it. But Hugh freezes the new auburn head football coach and you are the first two to officially respond to that news on this program. I'll start with you, Spencer. Can we talk about all the things this isn't? This isn't one and auburn community decision because it doesn't, if that were, they would have hired somebody who had connections to the school, which he freeze has none. So obviously it's an out of the box higher. Twice. Hey beatnik, Saban twice. We can keep going and I really want to do this. He's also not a higher that is really sort of, I think, a novel or out of the box higher, right? But that was the idea. Spencer, he beat Nick Saban twice. Can I help? This is true. He's also the third straight Arkansas state coach should be hired at all. Right, but remember, Paul, he beat Nick Saban's toys. Yeah, you got to go to Jonesboro first before you end up at auburn. And he did beat Nick Saban twice. In addition to that, and there's the official welcome. Welcome home in all caps, coach Hugh freeze. In addition to that, it's not really an out of the box higher, right? This was sort of maybe the thing that we were promised or that was sort of anticipated with new management at auburn that they were going to hire somebody who was novel, interesting, something different at auburn. That was Brian. To be fair. But remember, Brian harsen did not beat Nick Saban twice. That is true. He didn't meet in the same place. I just I'm like, why? You guys did not, I don't want to, I never want to put words in your mouth, but you don't seem moved by this hire. I'm not really, like I just, we talked about it on our show that foes, yours, Paul. Auburn is a place that is in and of itself organized chaos. You are expected you are expected to win and or compete for national championships at auburn despite it. Everybody in the last 40 years besides Brian has done it. We understand the chaos that Hugh frees facilitated ran in the organization at oldness. It's organized chaos of its own right. You're dropping organized chaos into organized chaos. What do you expect to happen? And the fact that he beat Nick Saban twice, if that's what we're hanging our hat on here, it's also worth looking at what happened, by the way, when people say, okay, well, there's the promise of you freeze. Yeah, sure. He did beat Alabama twice. And I will admit, if you take it and you just say, look at the football, it was very interesting football. Not always in good ways. These were teams that would have very high highs and very low lows. If the notion was to take off on football and give it some sort of maturity or stability. I don't know if we've done that. By the way, this is not going to be a quick build. No. Everybody's going to say, transfer portal this transport of that. All right. You are going to walk into this locker room and you are going to have young men who deservedly so are going to look at their experience, particularly over the last two years and say, man, this ain't for me anymore. And they're going to leave, probably. Via the transfer portal, which is their right. So you're probably going to have to portal up pretty quickly. You're going to have to take advantage of a generational recruiting class into state of Alabama, like yesterday, because the early signing day is coming. The SEC west, he left in 2016 or whenever it was he left league, it's not the same one he is coming back into. And even though Alabama may be on some semblance of a decline, whatever that may look like as Nick Saban gets into his 70s here, you're still going to LSU team that's fighting. You're still going to snicker and you're going to laugh, but you've still got a and M, being what they are. It's a different SEC west that he's coming back into than the one he left. Yeah, but just as an epilogue to any thoughts, I have on that, it's this. You know what you signed up for? I don't want to hear anything different moving forward. So I ask you, and again, we're talking to Spencer hall and Richard Johnson Spencer, you know what you signed up for. So what is that? You signed up for somebody who does coach a volatile and exciting brand of football. You signed up for somebody who's liberty team this year was wildly inconsistent at times losing to UConn and I believe 49 1449 17. Two New Mexico state, right? That's what you're signing up for. And you're signing up for somebody who their football team and the program and beyond, there's been some questionable decision making. So that's what you're signing up for auburn. I don't want any surprises down the road. And don't expect, this is the other thing too. These are facts. This is not criticism, all right? You can just read the list. Richard, some have said, however, you freeze got his team at all missed in the NCAA certainly made it clear how they think that doesn't matter anymore because of the current structure of college football. Do you buy that? Yeah, I mean, look, the one thing I don't really have a problem with that he frees facilitated ledger, whatever the NCAA wants to say is paying players. Bam. I'm hanging out with that. So that's one thing that auburn had to get over and I'm sure they got over pretty quickly. The other thing is the barely acknowledged story of the escort service. He used the university phone that's all the public really knows that the counter to that that's between two reason is why. Is that so? I do think that that specific situation is between you freeze and his wife. What is not between you freeze and his wife is the error in judgment that it is to use a work state issued phone to do what he did. Those are the things that we can criticize. And I don't want to hear everybody makes mistakes when it comes down to that. I'm not even really judging the actions. Again, I do think the actions, whatever, that's his family. It's doing him and his wife. But you can sit here and criticize the misstep in judgment that facilitated those actions, which is using a state issued phone to do what he did. You can sit here and criticize that. And you guys help me out, but it seems like the moment that I'll own this discovered that it was over. I mean, they made the decision after defending. They vehemently defended him on the NCAA stuff. They were all in on that. Yeah, I think that's a tipping point. And that's a tipping point when it comes to whether I can trust you as an employer to tell the entire story. It's never really about the initial infraction. It's about telling the entire story. This was the most damning aspect of the petrino case. If you want to revisit another troubled SEC head coach with some decision making issues to say at the very least, it wasn't the initial thing it was the cover up.

"Again, we're repeating the big story of the day. She frees about to be officially named as the auburn football coach. Remember, he was at old miss. He was named the coach at all miss in time for the 2012 season, he started 6 and 6 there. And it was in 2013 that he really got the attention of the country when two days before national signing day when there were all kinds of allegations making the rounds. He sent out a tweet saying, if you have facts about a violation, email, email compliance, at almost dot EDU, if not, please don't slander the young men or insult their families, his first recruiting class there included was right 8th nationally and included Robert Kim dietschy and Laramie tunsil as well as Tony Connor. And that began really an unbelievable series of controversies where she freeze could never quite outrun the allegations, but one thing he did do was knock off Nick Saban in 2014 with college game day and Katy Perry there. It's one of the most famous upsets in SEC modern history. He repeated it the next year in Tuscaloosa and finished a year going to the sugar ball, but it was in 2016 when it all started to unravel when it was later reported after as Dan wetzel said a number of allegations kept coming up in the school tried to tamp down all the allegations telling any reporter that would listen and some who got tired of listening that they had not done anything wrong. It was in January of 2016 that you freeze called a Florida based escort service from his university issued cell phone, the call was discovered in the Houston nut case by nuts attorneys and it was a few weeks later that old mis received its first notice of allegations and it would remember the 19 2016 draft on Laramie tunsil had his Twitter accounts hack. That started out that opened up another investigation and a Syria almost ended up going 5 and 7 in 2016, including a two and 6 SEC mark to finish last in February of 2017, the school received a second notice of NCAA violations. In June of 2017, they responded and it was on July 20th, July 20th, 2017, when news broke that Hugh freeze had resigned as the owners had football coach, it was reported a couple of days later of the much more allegations he eventually was hired by liberty and today it seems like the announcement imminent that he will be officially hired as the auburn head football coach. Pat is up next. Good afternoon, pat. Hi, Paul and thank you for taking my call. Thank you before I get to my point. I just want to tell you that legend is the greatest scholar. He just makes me smile. Anyway, I wanted to get on to say that I think the auburn family is not against T phrase. We were just for Cadillac. And as long as Cadillac can stay on and play a major role, I think we will coalesce around Q three. And you know, all these things about past and discretion, I don't know what they were, but he who has no sin should the first stunning and really that's all I have to say, but thank you for listening, Paula, lucky. Joe is up next. Hello, Joe. Rosa ropo. You know what? We worried about who you've raised going auburn, Paul. I'm in for one thing. He ain't gonna buy Alabama chicks. I mean, he might go to auburn the best thing he's gonna do is buy a goat. How much we ain't worried about them both. Let's talk about this right here. How about we just kick auburn rotten or that gum? And Paul, we keep them three years in a row. They can count it. We got lucky last year. It wasn't lucky. We'll just get the fan their money's worth. But we kicked our butt power and you know it. We kicked their butt, Paul. And there ain't no way. They should keep Alabama out of the playoffs this year. You got to look at strength, strength of schedule. Who is D.C. can you play? I mean, they've made play with their sale, but they ain't really played nobody, Paul. I mean, Alabama, I mean, you look at who we play. We got two losses. Last play of the game, ball. I mean, all night. There's no way. I will put Alabama at two right now. And hey, in a neutral side, we could meet Georgia head to head. But as it is, you know, I'm going to give it the probably is the best team right now out there. But I'm going to say this right here. And the words of our man, Paul, what are you scored 49 bullets? On auburn. There's thing there, half a hundred pow in the lord's of our man. Do you see what I'm saying? I mean, Paul, I mean, Alabama is the best team out there besides just short of George. And we can meet them. You know, you know we can meet a ball. I mean, who's better? You think going out of state is going to be this? I mean, no house they ain't played the team's loop. I don't think oh, I'll take a big Vanderbilt to be unsolved. And you know what? Well, I'm sorry I didn't make it down to such collusion this weekend. My sister was there. And I'm sorry she didn't see it wasn't able to get more you, but she was going to hover at you. You know, she got around, you know. But the thing about it is, Paul, three years in a row. How many number of days is that? That's almost a thousand. It's going to be over a thousand time. We go to open and whoop their butt up there at that cow pastor pole. It's only disaster in the pasture all over again next year, Paul. And I don't care, I hope we make the playoffs, and we deserve to play out. And this guy has football playoff. The committee, they need to seriously consider Alabama. If you watch how we played Saturday, we could be anybody, Paul. Anybody. I appreciate it's called Jim is up next. Jimmy there. Yeah, I mean, I didn't hear you, man. Yeah, well, you're on. Thank you. I appreciate it. I appreciate you taking my call. I hope it's significant because I'm going to tell you something. I really mean this. You know, I mean that and significant boob, the calls himself named himself legion, a legend should be tackling legion, parliament. I don't call anybody anymore food unless I know their food. I don't know if he's a food. But that guy, he sounds more like an insane foo than anybody I've ever heard in America. Period. The guy is he's jealous of me. That's obvious. But what do you call it, did he call? I know he called him me a freak and that stupid monologue he had while ago. Who was he calling he frees a freak? Is that what he would call? Yeah, that's exactly what he was saying. Well, there you go. That's the kind of guy. Look, I know your show is built now on mostly sensationalism by mostly large and pumps like him. I mean, I shouldn't say that. But 50% or more of people like him listen to the show and call the show and say the most false propaganda you can imagine and he's the king of it. That's the only thing he's good at is line propaganda. I thought the doctors about people like him. Hey, I think he is without a doubt clinically insane. He has a phone you have that is absolutely insane, Paul. You know, you had to say it, you like him because some of these

Fresh update on "nick saban" discussed on The Paul Finebaum Show

"They're going to be a playoff team and year one with a Heisman Trophy winner. I mean that is an amazing turnaround and I don't think we've seen anything quite like this in a long time to see how bad they were to how explosive they are. And a lot of it is that you have a trans reporter where you can make dramatic changes if you get a lot of buy in and they have the way it's taken off has been pretty amazing. Bruce reported over the weekend that Deion Sanders has been offered the Colorado job, but what do you think is next for Deion Sanders? I think it's really to determine this the best place for me to go next with my coaching career. I would sit there and say, you know what, like if USF, which is obviously a group of 5 jobs, but potentially it's a good group of 5 job. We know he's from Florida. If they came after him and made a hard sell for what they thought his vision of college football program could be, I don't know if you're him or whether you weigh which is the better job. I mean, I think you can win faster at another place. See you as the worst roster, I would say probably in all of power 5 football. There are some challenges there in terms of getting some transfers into school. There's a lot of issues to sort out. But he is a guy who could really make them relevant. He's different than Lincoln Riley, but in terms of just he has such a commanding presence, we saw how well he can recruit when he beat everybody in college football to get the nation's number one recruit to go to go to an FCS program. He has done really well on the field. I'm actually surprised more bigger schools have not really come after him, but one of the things that you hear little rumblings of is just like some of the power brokers at these schools are maybe a little uncomfortable with Dion having such a big presence in such a big personality that they feel like maybe they lose whatever control that they think they have over some of these coaches are paying a lot of money to. If your Colorado, I totally get it, why you'd go after him, given the success he's had given the way he can make a place that has been so, so in the dustbin can put some much needed life into it. And we'll see they have a big game this weekend for Jackson state. I imagine nothing will happen formally until after that game. Bruce finally, how did auburn miss on lane kiffin and how close are they to hiring Q phrase? That whole thing would seem to be such a mess, you know, Paul with the run up to the egg ball and everything else. It's hard to predict where they're going to go. I mean, I think you freeze if he was the head coach at auburn. And I know Hugh freeze has baggage. We all know that. But I think if he was the head coach at auburn, I would not be at all surprised if he had them in the top ten, the top 15 in a hurry. I mean, we've seen how good of a coach he is in terms of he's a really good play caller. I asked Nick Saban how tough of a coach he is the plague against CPB. Lead Alabama seems more than once. He knows what it takes to win in the SEC. But obviously now the longer this thing plays out, I don't want to say it's like that old kind of sea search from a few years ago, but when other people start scooping up coaches, whether it's a Matt rule who's a really good coach or get Luke fickle, who's a really good coach, those guys went to Big Ten schools, which maybe is more closer to their DNA, what those guys identify themselves with. But again, this is obviously it's a big job with a lot of resources and a lot of money. You're sitting there saying, all right, they screwed it up last time with a guy who they didn't have good alignment with and what just wasn't a good fit. I think they know they have to get this one right. You often say that with coaching searches, but especially after what happened and how it happened, I think, you know, sit there and have lane chip and end up at another with a bigger deal at oldness. I think they got to make sure that everything when they get this, the alignment is totally on point and I can see why they're deliberating over it. Well done. Great stuff from Bruce Feldman of Fox and the athletic many thanks. First, we appreciate it. We'll head to the break more of your phone calls at 855-242-7285 and we are continuing to monitor the auburn situation. Could it break this afternoon? We'll have it for you if it does.

"Going back to the reporter who asked Nick saving the question. First of all, the reporter sounds like he looks like mclovin, which I'm sure it didn't help his case. But it's like a phrase that Nick Saban gets triggered by quality of opponent. And no matter what your question about the offense, engaging the offense, once you go that direction, if you're a campus reporter, a school reporter, you got to know you're going to get that. If you play it again, you'll hear what I mean. But I thought it was a fair question. It is a fair question, but when you start using a phrase, quality of opponent with Nick Saban, that is going to get his ire up. And either you know that or you can't not know it. I've got my ire up. I'm not sure what that means either. But are we supposed to act like Alabama's football schedule is all equal? Quality opponent? That's we're supposed to do that just so Nick Saban doesn't get upset. That's ridiculous. Yes, more. You know this question is coming if you play a directional or a dash.

David Toms Weighs Up LSU Football's Chances This Year

"LSU football and 12, no 11 days now, open Florida state. This is a tricky situation this year, I think, because we're used to having a clown as a head coach. We're used to having a guy that's always in front of the camera, doing all sorts of stuff. And it seems, for the first time since Nick Saban, that we actually have a football coach at the elm, and we're not seeing all of that extra hoopla media attention and all that. What do you think about Brian Kelly? What do you think about baby setting or align at 6 and a half games? Well, I mean, my first thought is, you know, woodwards of a friend of mine and he said to me, the biggest thing about Brian Kelly is now I do not have to babysit my football coach. And he goes, I needed a professional in there and run the program like we wanted all to be run as Tiger fans. And that's the bottom line is that, you know, the guys is a professional. You can tell by his media awareness and the way he runs the program, the way he's kind of cleaned up things. It's not like a good old boy network anymore and I look for him to do really well. I think as far as the odds go and what Vegas says, I think that they're a little bit out of touch with our improved roster.

"I have a proposal poll question for the next hour. So here in Seattle, everyone is flying in droves off the Seahawks bandwagon. Let's ride. Let's try. So with the deshaun Watson controversy, who would you have to have as your quarterback, deshaun Watson or Gino Smith? I'd rather have Gino Smith right now because Deshawn is not going to play. If they're both eligible, then you take deshaun Watson. You know, unless you say, look, I'm not going to follow the team. I don't want to be part of them. I don't want to root for them, not part of the fan base. But that's really hard to do. 'cause if you grow up watching a team, when we talk through thick and thin, it's usually when you have a tough loss, like an earnest binary fumbles or something. This is different. But that's what being a fan is nowadays. Hey, my guys are using steroids, where they got caught using your fan. Okay. We'll get through it. My team signed Michael Vick. All right, we'll get through it. Let me go down the list. I mean, this happens. This is difficult though. Aaron and Missouri, hi Aaron, what's on your mind? Hey Dan, it's a quick question. You have a pretty respective self safe and embellish. It appears to me to save and enjoy teaching the game and skill and nuance more, Belichick, enjoys the extra nose. Which one do you think lasts longer than their turns? I don't know when people reacted after the Sabin interview like he sounded sad about retirement. I don't want to retire, I can't imagine what retirement would be like. No, I probably don't sound sadder despondent or down, but I mean, that's how Nick Saban is. His delivery is like that. But I go back to Joe Paterno. Brent Musburger said, he will never stop coaching because when he stops he'll die. And look what happened. You know, Bear Bryant. I mean, there's certain coaches. This is what they do and they don't know what to do with themselves. These guys don't play golf. They probably don't have a big circle of friends and have book club and go out and go on golf excursions to Scotland or Ireland. Like he was talking about. He goes, you know, that's not what I do. So I get it. But sometimes the job holds on to you. You get the job, but then the job gets you. And you know, what's he going to do? He loves doing it. I just didn't know with all of the political stuff with college football, do you want to continue to do it? Because when you start, it's different. You know, nobody's transferring if they are. They got to sit out a year. There's no name image in likeness. No, you're making a good living, get to a bowl game, keep your job. Now he's got to win a national championship. You got these kids coming and going. You know, you get into a back and forth with Jimbo Fisher. Like, there's a lot going on social media. And I just didn't know at some point because Belichick doesn't have to deal with this. That's why I think Belichick coaches longer. He doesn't have to deal with this much. Yeah. And I think Alabama is one of those schools, let Nick Saban have two straight three losing season three game losing seasons. He's on the hot seat. Don't hold your breath for that. Yeah. Oh, no, no, it won't happen, but I do think he's been tempted. I think that that Texas opening, whether they would have created an opening. I think a couple of years ago that he was starting to look at, man, has anybody satisfied or happy around here. If we don't win a national championship, and here they are, the number one team in college football final hour coming up, Nick Saban used to coach in the NFL with the dolphins. The dolphins make Darius Rucker cry. He'll join us coming up. More phone calls as well. It's a meat Friday. I got to go inspect the traeger's. It's part of my job responsibilities, final hour coming up. There's nothing like being

"And once I got there, I said, you know, I enjoyed the college game a lot because I love the development of players personally, academically, athletically, a lot of positive self gratification and all that. So when I got the opportunity to come to Alabama, I was like, this is it for me. So I really don't have a lot of temptation to go anyplace else. And I look at the job here as well, it's a rebuilding year over year. You got a new team. You got new players, new leadership, new people to count on, so you're really like starting all over. You don't need to go someplace else and try to rebuild something because you really, really building what you got every year. So I'm going to Nick Saban, Alabama head coach. How do you not make that meeting with Texas a and M personal for you? It's not personal at all. The game is about the players and my concern was not directed toward any particular school.

Darius Rucker, obviously, dairy strucker. Right now, 56% of the audience say, Nick Saban. Darius Rucker. Oh. No offense. What time? Yeah, I got to go Darius. He seems to be enjoying his life for a lot more. He's got awards, three Grammys. Well, I think coach Sabin enjoys it. He just doesn't enjoy it the way we would think he would enjoy it.

"You know, Parcells would single you out and embarrass you. And he learned from bob knight. And Belichick learned from Parcells. At some point you go, come on. Just let people do their job. I know you don't want to answer these questions. You got to show up. He didn't even let the reporter finish his question. That stuff is rude. I mean, that's unprofessional. That bothers me. You don't want to give answers. Okay. Do it in a respectful way then. But not he didn't even get to finish his question. Why do you want to know? Great. Yeah, good. All right, thanks, thank you. Come on. We have Nick Saban coming on 15 minutes of people always compare saving to Belichick, press conferences. It's not really comparable. Nick Saban will let you finish your question. Also, Sabin doesn't have to talk. He's not going to find himself the SEC won't find him if he doesn't do some media time call it. If pro football coaches have no option to not talk. Here's a question. Who retires first, Sabin or Belichick? If I were betting? Yeah. How old Saban, a little bit younger than Belgium. It's two years, I'll check. Belichick's 70. 70, yum. Saban is I was speaking of ages. Brian dabel is 47, and this is Bill Belichick's 48th season in the league. Here comes that what? Stat of the day. Nick Saban will join us in about ten minutes. If you were to head to bed and this is the total setup, I'm telling you my answer. Who's older, Saban or Belichick? I would think Belichick. Save in 6 months older. Oh. Okay. I like to call him junior when we get together. Hey, kid.

We read them all. We're actively trying to get better. We've got a great game plan for you today. Nick Saban joins the show for the very first time. He's the winner of 7 national championships and the architect to arguably the greatest run we've ever seen in the history of college football. So I won't waste any more of your time. Let's get to the goat, Nick Saban. He's the head coach of the Alabama crimson Todd, and in my opinion, then albeit it might be a biased one. I'm not sure it's close. I think he's the greatest head football coach in the history of college football. He's Nick Saban coach. I really appreciate the fact that you go on vacation at the end of June. And you came back from vacation just to be a part of the podcast. That really means a lot. Thank you so much for doing that. Or you know I'd do anything for you, Greg, and I appreciate you so much. And I do appreciate you saying what you say. About me. But, you know, I really came back because we have 7 on 7, you know, a couple days a week, so I kind of try to come back and make sure I'm staying on top of things and I'm making sure the players are doing things the way we want them to do it and that's the only got a couple hours a week in the summertime that you can spend with the players as coaches. So we got to try to make the most of it and the way things are now. The only time we can go on vacation is in July. So we got to kind of rotate our way in here so we got enough people to mine the store. I'm amazed by that because it feels like coach, the process is so ingrained. The culture is so ingrained. It's player led in so many ways. And yet here you guys come back to make sure that there's always somebody watching always somebody that you could maybe approach as a player if I had a question I could go to a coach now and that was illegal back in the day, but now it's very legal. So how do you balance that between the time that you spend with the players and the time they spend the strength and conditioning program, which is what we exclusively were able to do back in the day. Right. Well, basically, we still have, you know, leader team led 7 on 7 few plays of team where the coaches aren't there. But what we are allowed to do now is individual technique teaching for two hours a week. So we have a couple 7 minute individual periods where we go out and teach the technique of whatever the install is for that day. So that players have a better chance that when we do do it in a team situation or a 7 on 7 situation, especially the young players, they've had an opportunity to do it. But, you know, I think this whole concept is more challenging to get players to take the responsibility of leadership. I think a lot of guys are willing to go out there and work hard and set a good example and actually be somebody that somebody wants to emulate. But when you take that next step of trying to help somebody for their benefit by making them be accountable, teammate the teammate. Then, you know, that's a big step for a lot of guys to take because I think, you know, guys get so much positive, self gratification from social media, all these external they grow up sort of concerned about what everybody thinks of them. So they don't want to think that they don't want their teammate to think poorly of them because they said something to them that maybe the guy didn't like, even though it was in his best interest to do, I think getting guys to get to that point where you're holding people accountable. On and off the field, which is really in their best interest, which as coaches, we do that all the time. But player to player, I think it's getting a little bit more challenging than it used to be. Yeah, I understand that. And I know we've talked about it getting guys to change their behavior with the risk of freedom of transfer things that it's just harder to coach guys now. It's understandable completely. I remember coach vividly leading up to the 2009 season. I started the Twitter. And at that point, Twitter was relatively new. And now it's obviously a big part of what these kids have growing up and they've grown up with. So is it different coaching in the social media age as compared to the age back when I was playing before social media really existed? It may be different for some people. I think it's how it affects you. How does social media affect you? I mean, do you really get your self gratification like I always thought, for example, you as a player, you know, you were a perfectionist, you wanted to get it right. You were always well prepared. You weren't necessarily doing it because of the self gratification you got from some Internet source. You were doing it because you wanted to do it well, and you got a lot of positive self gratification. Knowing that you did it well. Did your best, you know, to try to be the best you could be. Not only for yourself, but for your teammates. You know, football's a great team game because not only do you have to be responsible and accountable to do your job, you got to be responsible accountable the other ten guys, you know, you're playing with because everybody's got to do it right for it to work the way you want it to work. So, you know, I think it's how it affects you. But I do think that some people get, you know, sort of totally immersed, I end what the external factors are saying about them or whatever. And I think then all of a sudden you start to do things to please those factors rather than to please yourself. And then I don't think you can get the same kind of self

"I had a green jacket? 30 for 30% shark, now streaming on ESPN+. So our conversation with John Daly, Nick Saban coming up in just a few minutes. Let's grab a few phone calls here. David is in Columbus, Ohio, hello, David. Hey, thanks, Paul. You had my second best golfer on. He's my kind of golfer. Smoking drinking and cuffing. That used to be me. Anyway, I want to talk about this portal. If they don't get it right and the NIL, college football is going to be just like college basketball, one and done. The reason I say that is I watched Maurice do everything he could to get ineligible because, you know, so he could try to go pro and when he went to Ohio State that championship. And I can see a lot of alignments just getting together, getting my Dream Team laureus as soon NFL and maybe winning. What do you think about that? I think right now, I think litigation is certainly on the horizon. I wouldn't take exception of that at all. Hey, thanks appreciate the call. We must go to a break here. In just a minute, I'm sorry. I went a little too quickly there. I'm still thinking this got to go over this one last time. So daily sits down in light. I mean, it was like one motion. Boom. The guy knows how to light, light up. Peyton is up next in Mississippi. Yes, hi, mister Paul. I was just calling to see how you thought all this rebel football was dating next year if you think Jackson dog would be on par with man or I think that would be very difficult considering how great Matt was, but I know kiffin is very high on him. And the only unknown, it's not the only unknown, but there are so many players I just don't know that much about that are coming in. That we haven't seen other than maybe in a scrimmage. So I do expect a good year, though. From all this. So let's check in with bob, who is in Tennessee. Hey bob, you're on the air. Hey, Paul. I think all the problem we're having with NIL and portal and all that stuff is what has happened. We have made professional athletics out of college sports. That's an basically that's what happened. It all started when the Olympics made professional athletes able to compete in the Olympics. And it's progressed up till now. I thought the money where we talked about a lot of schools were doing NIL before it was legal. Yeah, sure, that's true. But it doesn't matter what we're dealing with is now. And we're killing amateurism. There's no such thing. Okay, let's say, let's agree with you on that. But show what? I guess it's my response. Well, there's nothing. So what? It's just kiss it, goodbye. It's done and gone now. But that's why I said so what? That's already established. We don't need to debate that. But we are. But don't act like college athletics are anything but a $1 billion business. This has been happening for a long time. And now it's finally hit the mother lode up against the break. We'll talk to only the best coach in that $1 billion business. Nick Saban, joining.

"So Aaron, the national championship game is, of course, a rematch, Alabama and Georgia, squared off back in early December and Alabama won that one, 41 to 24. Looking back at that game, what were your big takeaways? One, how well album was offensive line play because it's been the relative weakness of this team this year. Especially that particular game was a week after Bryce young got sacked 7 times at auburn, and everyone was really down on album. If you can't be successful against the sort of average middling auburn team, how are you going to beat clearly the best team in college football, which was Georgia and the strength of Georgia is their defense. But the offensive line answered the call. That offensive line, a week ago, this time you got a salute because he had time is nest said to point his receiver the way he goes. No rush, handled well no sacks allowed. My Georgia Bryce young basically won the Heisman Trophy that night by what he did. Plenty of time Aaron Al manzer Jameson Williams touchdown. So you go from maybe the worst performance that we've seen from a saving team in years to maybe the best within a week's time span and that happened because the offensive line stood up and made great plays against basically one of the best defenses we've seen in college football in the last ten years. And looking forward to the game on Monday, what do you think will be the keys to Alabama beating the bulldogs for a second time this season? What do you think this game will hinge on? Yeah, I think it's Alabama's adaptability. I don't think Georgia's defense is going to play it the same. I think they're going to probably bring a lot more pressure. So their ability to adapt to that in game and handle that. And utterly shocked that that first matchup played out the way that I didn't expect all of them to get 41 points. I mean, the previous high and points to Georgia had allowed that season with 17 an album, I got 41. So I think George is going to play a lot better, and I think album is going to have to play even better than they did back in early December. And lastly, Aaron, you know, when a team is as successful as Alabama has been recently, imagine it's easy for all of these championship seasons to sort of blend together. But from your standpoint, as someone who again has covered the crimson tie for quite a while now, what stands out to you about this year's Alabama team. What do you think you will remember most about this year's group? The fact that it was so so much of a roller coaster. And I say that people from the outside are like, what are you talking about? They lost one game at Texas a and M and it was only about three points. I get that, but this was an Alabama team I think I believe that play 5 games that were one score that was decided by one score. So this team sort of played down to the level that are competition all year. There were a lot of key injuries. And no one wants to hear about adversity with a team that's ranked number one in the country, but it really was. And it's all relative, but in terms of what we normally see from Alabama team, they had to deal with a lot more adversity. Normally offensive line is one of the strengths of the team. It is not been a strength this year. Normally Alabama can run at will when it wants to. They weren't able to do that. But the team just never really lost belief in itself even as myself in the media and a lot of the fans did. And I think that speaks to two things. One, what Nick Saban's built, how he's recruited how he's developed. And two, I think it speaks to the general landscape college football issue. There weren't lot of great teams out there. There were a lot of good teams. It was one probably great team consistently that was Georgia, but I think that's why all I got here because college football is a little weaker across the landscape and the fact that Nick Saban in those players finally listened to him and they finally bought in and they got here. Lauren, thanks so much for joining us and enjoy the final stop on this roller coaster ride. Absolutely thanks for having me. "Way more playing the link. So he's laying all these things out that we know, but Nick Saban doesn't often say, but in those moments, he can use those things to his advantage, and he's not lying. And talking to a lot of players, the one thing that came up over and over and over again, that you really wouldn't think would stick out because it's so sort of basic, but it really resonated with all the recruits that came to Alabama was. He does a lot of them. You know, he told Julio Jones, which everyone knows what Hulu Jones is now, but Julio Jones was a big deal in high school. By the time he was a freshman in high school, people knew maybe not exactly what his future held for him, but we knew he was a really big deal. And Nick Saban told him, listen, we want you in Alabama. This is why we think you will benefit by coming to our program, but buddy, we're gonna win without you. We don't need you. He also doesn't promise players playing time. He gives him an opportunity. I think you're good enough to play, but I'm not promising you anything. You got to go earn it. And believe it or not, that's the one thing every player I talk to said, what makes Nick Saban stand out? And they all said, he doesn't lie to you. In that leaked recruiting video, he also seemed to really emphasize how much players can improve, not just in games, but in practices. And how Alabama sort of has an unfair advantage in that sense. Can you elaborate a little bit on what he meant? Tons of album employers will tell you, practice in Alabama is actually harder than most of the games we play. Iron sharpens iron, right? You're going up against, you know, if you're ever Neil, Allen was left tackle right now. Guess who you're going up against every day in practice? Will Anderson, who leads the nation in sacks with 17 and a half. He's got 34 and a half tackles for lost. All those guys will tell you that may be better. The competition made me better. The guy I practiced against was that he got played in the game against. And there's something about Uber competitors. They want that competition. You have to have a certain sort of competitiveness to want to play at Alabama. And that competition every day in practice is only going to make you better. I mean, they bring you in, you're already very heralded, very highly recruited. But then every day we're going to develop you by not only strength and conditioning in the coaching staff, you're getting developed by the guy you're going up against, who oftentimes is going to be better than the guy you're going to go up in a game. Album gets negative recruited more than any other program. A lot of teams tell them you're not going to play at Alabama. Look at their rosters, they've stacked up 5 recruiting classes in a row that ranked number one. Why on earth would you go there? But Nick Saban actually turned that on its head and used it as an advantage. We think you are good enough to play here. We wouldn't waste our time, and they can point to several freshmen who have played. You know, tuna talk below when he threw that past, and the national championship game at the end of 2017 was a freshman. Alex leatherwood was a freshman tackle on that naji Harris during that game was a freshman running back. So they can use all these real-life examples of listen. That's sort of malarkey. You can play as a freshman at Alabama. And two, when they tell you that you're not good enough of a player to play it out of them, and they're actually insulting you in your skill set. They're telling you they don't think you're that good. Because they only recruits the best of the best. And if we're recruiting you, that's what we think of you. What's the best workout program? "Nick Saban if he hasn't cemented his legacy as the greatest college football coach of all time he has certainly taken another step in that direction. Nick Saban and the Alabama crimson tide are headed to yet another national championship game. For Saban, a win next Monday would give him 7 national championships in 14 full seasons at Alabama. So how exactly does the guy do it? Today, the athletics Aaron subtle breaks down one of Sabin's secret weapons, recruiting, and it turns out it's a world full of meticulous research, hard truths, and soul food. From wondering in the athletic, I'm under scalzo. It's Monday, January 3rd, and this is. The lead. Aaron settles, welcome to the show. Thanks for having me. So, Aaron, if I have this correct, you are from Alabama. You went to the university of Alabama. You've been living in Tuscaloosa and covering the crimson tide for more than a decade now. So my question is, have you been given to the key to the city out or the key to the state? If not, how many years away would you say you are? Well, I don't know about me. I know Nick said everyone got those honors a long time ago, but I feel like I've been on a historic ride that my career has sort of paralleled Nick Saban's arrival to Tuscaloosa and all of the success that he's had. So whether it's true or not, I'm gonna take partial credit for some of the success albay was had during that time. Well, yeah, get that man a key. He is the lucky charm. Well Aaron, you were in Arlington for the cotton bowl on Friday. The atmosphere of the game seemed incredible. Like there just seemed to be this manic energy coming from the Alabama fans in particular. Was it as loud and wild in person as it seemed on TV? It was, you know, but the press box there in Arlington at AT&T Stadium, we were basically above the Cincinnati section. So they were more amplified to us. And I would say they probably had at least a 55 45 split of the crowd Cincinnati was their first trip to the playoffs. They're very excited. They sort of have that Midwest sports energy, which is more in your face than a typical SEC crowd. So they were really loud, but I'll be able to fans, even though it's sort of gotten to be old hat, all the success that they've had, all the college football playoff trips that they've had, they made themselves heard there, certainly. For sure. Well, let's talk about the game itself for a minute. You know, this Alabama offense has largely been defined this season by Heisman winter Bryce young and his very talented group of receivers. But after the win over Cincinnati on Friday, you wrote about the guy who in your eyes was the real hero of the game. So tell us about running back Brian Robinson junior and his performance. What stood out to you? Just the toughness. Brian Robinson is, I'm not shying away from contact. You're in front of me. My goal is to go through you. Robinson. No signs of being hurt there any lowered his head and powered forward. And there was one I really felt set the tone for the game. He got stopped probably three yards in the backfield and just refused to go down until he got a four yard game. That was the game plan was to feature him that we respect what Cincinnati has in their defensive backfield. And even though we're very explosive offensive team, we feel our advantage in this game is in the trenches. So let's let our big guys up front are running back, do the work and let Brian go to work and he did. And a good bounce by Brian Robinson. First down in the bear cap territory inside the 40 for over 200 yards, it was the most rushing yards album has ever had from a running back in a bowl performance. Robinson runs over the defense and has the Alabama first down at the 25. I think that set the tone for the game and I think that continued office blanket opening up really big holes from. And even when they didn't, he ran through guys and made yards after contact. It seems like Brian Robinson has also become a real fan favorite in Tuscaloosa. Can you explain why that is and tell us a little about his background? Yeah, Brian Robinson, he's from Tuscaloosa. And so he grew up literally right down the road from the university of Alabama. We've known what he could do for a long time, but he had a very slow build to that performance that we saw in the cotton bowl because he had to wait his turn. He had hurt way behind Josh Jacobs and naji Harris. And so I asked Brian after the game, he didn't run and transfer when things got tough. He gave a quote that it's been lighting my mentions on Twitter on fire. I mean, I literally put all my heart into this. You know, this university, you know, that team, that locker room, you know, I don't know want to let you know my brother's down on that one let my coach it down. I don't know I want to let this university down. So, no, I just give it everything I got, you know, every chance I get. It's a very humble guy. As you mentioned, you know, this album offense features a Heisman Trophy winning quarterback, they've got jamison Williams on the outside whose pure speed and for the last few years, Alabama has been known as a passing team. And that's sort of weird to think about because through the majority of Nick Saban's career in Alabama, you thought a big offensive line, you thought great running back. And now it was sort of a throwback performance. And so when it was his turn, even though he got the highlight of it, he was sharing it with his teammates around him. And what did Nick Saban have to say about his performance after the game? I think Nick Saban used it as an example for younger players who get frustrated. Well, I think anytime a guy spends as much time behind as many good players as be Robb did, never complains, always works hard, I am willing to have the patience to wait his turn. There's nothing wrong with guys transferring. And next step is not against that. But Nick Saban does see some virtue in dramatic having some adversity in your career in figuring out how to deal with it. There are so many players now that are willing to cut and run as soon as things don't happen. And they get immediate self gratification from whatever their circumstance is and he shortly showed a tremendous amount of resiliency to stick with it, stay in a program, keep working. So I think Nick Saban has used Brian sort of as an example of, this is what happens when you do things the right way. Well, on the topic of Nick Saban, developing players. And I wonder how have you tell us about one of the things that has made Nick Saban so successful during his time at Alabama? And that's recruiting. This is the part where I should probably remind people that he has become so iconic as a recruiter that he was actually asked to play himself. In the movie, the blind side. This is my daughter college. Hi, pleasure to meet you. And you must be Leanne. That would be me, coach, Saban. Nice to meet you. Just call me Nick. So, Aaron, can you give us a sense first of just how successful and saving has been as a recruiter during his time at Alabama? How have his incoming classes stacked up over the years? It's been incredible. Since 2008, which was his first full recruiting class, they've been top 5 every year. And number one a lot. And I think arguably college football greatest recruiter of all time, which is weird because when you look at him and you judge him through the snapshots we see through the media, he can come across very gruff, very short, but he's exactly the opposite when he's recruiting the young man. He's got a ton of charm, he connects with parents very well. He finds out what's important to you and says this is how coming to my program will benefit that. Speaking of charm, by the way, he also charmed Sandra Bullock's character in the blind side. That's right. Interior decorating style if I recall correctly. You got it. This is an incredible home that wins their balances are a nice touch. Well, thank you. You obviously have excellent taste. Are we appreciate quality and recognize it when we see it? Well, Aaron you and our colleague Nicole our Bach recently dug up some really great stories that I think show exactly how Nick Saban operates as recruiter and what makes him so effective in that role, aside from, you know, the apparent charm. Can you tell us what you learned from current Michigan state head coach Mel Tucker when he was once recruited by Sabin to play at the.

"Her rocket can coming your way. This hour here on the D a show we are stunned to a news in 20 minutes. And in 40 minutes, which NFL head coach is on the hottest seat Entering week. One bucks and Cowboys tonight. Open up the NFL season bucks are favored by 8.5. I think they'll win by double digits. I don't like the way this thing sets up for the Cowboys, Of course, a lot of emotion to the building banner raising for the Buccaneers at home tonight. Bucks, obviously or completely healthy. Meantime, the Cowboys are losing Zack Martin in the middle of their offensive line. Think the Buccaneers pass Rush is going to have a day that press got still trying to find his way back after the season long injury last year than missing the preseason this year, the shoulder soreness I just don't like this matchup at all. I think the Cowboys could still win the NFC East. But I don't think they're going to win tonight. I think they end up losing by double digits. But we'll talk more about the expectations on the buccaneer specifically a little bit later on in the program, Derrick Brooks is going to join us here on the show, coming up an hour from now Pro Football Hall of Famer and perhaps the greatest Buccaneer player ever to suit up. He's going to join us coming up next hour. So is Joe Thigh. Zeman to kick off the NFL season? Let's do some college football here. After demolishing a top 20 team in Miami this past weekend, Alabama looks every part the defending national champ and perhaps even better than last year if that's possible, considering Last year's version of the Tide, considered perhaps the best version of the tide since Nick Saban took over This week. He's got little old Mercer. Yes, Mercer from the FCS. Like clockwork. Nick Saban. After a big win. Where there's a lot of hype around his team going into an easy push over game. Has got to rattle some cages. Okay, I think several years ago. Um it was the sixth or seventh game of the year. Um, we just beat Texas A and M. And people started talking about our team. And I had to bring everyone's attention to Um What I referred to as rat poison. Right. So now we basically played one half of one game. Right. We went ahead, 27. Nothing in the game. Um, and then it was basically 17 16 after that, with two stops inside the five yard line. And, um, you know, so we didn't maintain our intensity in the game, so we were affected by the scoreboard, so we haven't proven that we can play for 60 minutes. Then we come out on Monday and really not ready to practice. I guess because of respect we have for the opponent. I don't really know all that. Or maybe it's what they read on social media or in the media. Or whatever, after one half of a game this season and, um You know, then it was hot yesterday, so So we've got every external factor in the world, Uh, that is affecting our ability to maintain intensity. Uh, and play the way we need to play and practice the way we need to practice to improve. We got the scoreboard effects us who were playing affects us. The heat affects us, the media and what you guys write every day affects us, so you know. To me. We gotta prove that we can play and maintain intensity for 60 minutes in the game, execute do our job. Play hard finish games, finished placed do things the way we're supposed to do it. This is Mercer Week. This is Mercer Week, guys. Alabama just came off a throttling of a top 20 Miami team. And Nick Saban during Mercer Week is talking about. We only played a 30 minute game. Came out. We have no respect for the opponent. Apparently, it's too hot to practice and everybody's reading their stuff on Social media. It's Mercer. We said you mentioned that the You didn't like how the team came out and practice on Monday. How did you see the leadership within the locker room? How do you see them? Respond to that practice? Well, we'll see. You know, that's what I want to see. I want to see. Do we have leadership? Do we get people to respond? Uh, people care enough to, uh, understand what we have to do to maintain our intensity for 60 minutes in the game to improve as a team to do the things that we need to do to improve as a team. Have the mindset that we need to have, Uh, We got some guys that are, you know they're doing the right things we got, and and they're trying to set a good example. They're trying to pull the guys alone. Uh, but we also have other guys that you know, need to pick it up. And understand what it takes to practice what it takes to prepare. You know, Some people have the the idea that exertion through the course of the week. Some some kind of way impairs your ability to play on Saturday. But really, you've got to have exertion through the week to be ready to play on Saturday. And the key to that is how do you take care of yourself? How do you recover? How do you sleep? How do you hydrate? How do you use the Sports Science Center? And all the technology. We have to help guys recover so that you're going to be good on Saturday, so I think you know, we got some guys that got it backwards. We're trying to get him fixed. Do you want to know why Nick Saban. Has won seven national championships. Has won six at Alabama. Has won nine SEC titles. Went 13 and one at L s U And has gone 12 in 2, 14.

"Three alabama quarterbacks were in the same quarterback room two thousand eighteen. And those three quarterbacks are going to be day one starters for this season magnum of the jalen hurts the eagles and to talk about lot of the miami dolphins and the man that helped put that all together is the best course in college football without any question right now. Here's nick saban head coach alabama. They're number one in the country in the preseason. They're gonna play number fourteen miami three thirty eastern time. Abc coats saving is here. Thanks good your hotline coach. I laid it out there about your quarterbacks. And i know that there's a lot of pry but what is it like for you. See three guys who are on your team at one time about the be started at the same time day when the season in the nfl. I'm excited for them on. This is something that they all work very very hard for. You know their dream growing up. But i think the the key thing that everybody should remember out there. Is you know. These guys really focused on the right things when they were in college. They all focused on their development. They all supportive of each other and they all improved dramatically. You know as college players that enable them to get the opportunities that they have now which you know. We're excited for them and i hope they all do well coach. What what went into mack. Jones basically having sit with you for a little bit and latest turn to now becoming the week one starter with the new england patriots right. I think you know the biggest thing for mac. When as as a young player it was He wasn't that heavily recruited so. I don't think he had the same expectations that you know a lot of players you know. Come with a think they should be a starter as a freshman or whatever. I think mac had the right You know sort of disposition about where he was player. He knew he had to get bigger. He knew he had to get stronger. And it was focused on you. Know what do i have to do develop so And i think that was the key to him becoming a really good player. I think he learned a lot from being around the other players But i think he also learned how to control his emotions. Stay in the right place. Make good choices and decisions not get affected by a bad play Which all things that really helped him become a really really consistent player. He's accurate with the ball. He's very smart. He's gonna read and and get the ball in the right place and as a quarterback. That's what you do. You distribute the ball and to get the confidence in your teammates that you're gonna do that on a consistent basis in the right way. I think is something that really can be helpful to you. Know any quarterback Because the people around you like that position they to be playing well. If you're going to play. Well we are the head coach. Alabama nick sabin on a progressive. How coach obviously leading into the draft. You and bill belichick have a great relationship. What were your conversations like about mack. Jones leading into it well Three days up until the draft. I get lots of phone calls and Not just because a mac but really because of the six players that we had eight players that we got dixon. The first couple of rounds and amazingly enough. Not very many of those questions are about. What kind of player. A guy goes Most of the questions are about. What kind of leader is kind of character does he have. How's he going to impact the team. Is he going to be a good teammate. He's going to represent the organization. Well you know. It's amazing that. I think a lot of players sometimes done understand the importance of that side of Creating value for yourself by being the right kind of person happened the right competitive character. And i think my conversations with bill were more about that type of stuff than it really was about You know can this guy. Throw the ball fifty yards down field. I think everybody's figures that out pretty much drum coach Nick sabin joining us. Here on keyshawn. Jay williams zubin seven time national champion coach savings. Let me get there right. A couple of years ago coach saving. You recruit my son. I said in your office and we had a detailed conversation about the volvo quarterback position in the sec conference from a read option standpoint in. I remember when you were talking to me. You said that you were more leaning toward the read option style at this point because you have practice against it so much because of the teams within the conference. But you hadn't had a quarterback quite like that you were more of the traditional. Aj mccaren types. The bigger guys now all of a sudden over the last several years. You somewhat shifted to a smaller quarterback whether it was to whether it was jalen hurts and now the incredible young man that you guys plucked out of our backyard embrace young you just name the starter. What is he done to impress you to get the nod opening day Well prices very consistent Smart understands the offense You know was very accurate with the ball and Understand because he is you know he's not a six four guy he really does understand how to move in the pocket and Five one does to make throws And you know he's athletic His quick So he can extend plays But the thing i like about a most is He really does try to execute What's there doesn't try to make Things happen by making bad decisions and Also i think he's very very consistent and these improved you know. His presence is leadership. I think has come with confidence. So we're excited to see how our whole offensive team plays and how they play around. Which with a lot of new young players. That's always going to be the key for you. Know bryce to be able to Not play well just for himself but have everybody around the play. Well as well coats saving always amazing marvel at how at your age. And i hate to bring agent at a conversation but you still have a young man's quality about you still have a young man's grit about you. When it keeps getting a younger game comes when it comes to college football coaching. Where does that come from with you. It's a good question I enjoy what. I do You know the the goal of the program here is to help. The players be more successful in life or having been involved with the program whether it's personal development academic support developing careers off field developing careers on the shield so there's a lot of positive self-gratification you know and that it seemed guys develop and be successful and i love. Coaching are like teaching like being around the players. The relationships that you have being a part of a team as something that i've done since i was in the nine years old playing little league baseball so I just always enjoy the opportunity to be able to do it in college. You lose about twenty five percent of your team every year or so. It's almost like taking a new job in terms of the challenge that you have to try to get the next team You know where they need to be the be successful. And that's that's that's something that's takes. You know a lot of energy a lot of enthusiasm and you gotta be very committed to it When i'm not that. I guess i won't do this anymore. But i certainly joy you know. So they'll when now a lot What i was gonna say. What's the secret considering. I mean you've dealt with covert we're we're dealing with. Nfl lsu's now everybody wants to get paid for by thinks. They're bigger than what they are. How do you manage expectations and.

"Michael vehicle card battlers is something made him money. Alex smith turned him and made him some money. I'm like there's a recurring theme. You read new york jets. Don't have andy damn read. So it's kinda like you know. I get it understand it. Maybe a mike leflore could be that guy in calling plays in teaching the quarterback. Maybe that could be the case. But he's got a long ways to go in a short time to get there have him if he plays similar tile. Justin herbert play last year. He's well on his way absolutely if he just heard then that's just like a. Yeah exactly if he played in herbert. They're gonna put a status update that that sounds like a reasonable expectation. No no no. It's not really that's not reason. Not because. I don't know just in herbert over exceeded those expectations. People thought he was going to be good or decent. Nobody expected that from your. I mean you don't think that's feasible if he should retire kurt. Herbert was one of the top six quarterbacks in the nfl last year despite satistics. I'm just talking about plate. Damn the statistics. I'm joe about the way he was playing just looked different. The top six dudes okay. Yeah he just looked just look different than men. He got the ball in his hands. When the whole thing happened with tyrod taylor of the charge and the whole medical thing and they miscommunicate. Whatever that was it wasn't a miscommunication. I hit you in the wrong spot or whatever whatever that was adjusted. Herb hit the right spot. After that i would not have so many so what. What's who's quarterback that played this year if you said. Hey zac wilson play like this guy. Then we're okay. A mid mid pack of the guy mecca if he plays like baker mayfield the season the first season i happened to see because the browns at the best offensive line of football they. I they ran. Hello the ball charleston. They play when they baker mayfield to make plays here at twenty six touchdowns and nine in sections and when the pittsburgh steelers made mistakes and that first playoff game baker mayfield. Turn that into touchdowns. That's what you want. Zach wilson at least come close to justin herbert. The way he played last year guys. That was a different level as a rookie. Especially nobody saw that coming. You kind of persons act wilson. I know tony romo was trying to do. I just think you're asking for trouble. Your jets fan to believe that hyperbole don't even need him. I don't need him to play. Like baker mayfield because baker mayfield led his team to the playoffs. I needed to play. If you wanna look at cops. Gimme with joe borough gay. Just take that as borough was on his way to do pretty well. I mean that's that's a good. That's good for rookie. With joe bro was able to do give me that. Just give me some of that. And i'm i'm happy with that. Brought me a little bit of that image. Oberle did that behind a password. Offensive line jets offensive line should be a little bit better than joe borough have last year and they got big becton those of course they drafted my man out of se. Alice good yeah. They should be okay. Run the football play tough defense. Don't put your defense on the short field. The last thing. I wanted to zach wilson. Anybody believed that if he gets close to justin. Herbert i understand. Go nuts down from patrick mahomes and we start off with saint patrick mahomes for patrick mahomes see. Here's the difference when you say a notch down for patrick mahomes justin. Herbert is a notch. Down from patrick mahomes based on what he did last year. Just based on the way he played as a rookie. You typically would. Quarterbacks play like justin herber play. They don't fall off a cliff. They only continue to go up then a eventually even out but that even out is still what they did last year last year. Eight forty seven hundred yard passer on a consistent basis interception rate down passing efficiency there. That's where you start to say. Okay patrick mahomes. In like freddie said i get with tony romo again understand he. He's a big guy. I get it i understand it but you pushing it a bit much stupi. "About Nick Saban. For a moment. Nick Saban Greatest coach in college football, one of the greatest coaches to ever live so Saban had An interesting point that he was making when he was talking about this upcoming season. It had to do with name, image and likeness laws, like everything else that's going on with college football. Very naturally. So I mean, this is a big deal, right? Of course it is. We're talking about college athletes finally getting paid, finally making money based on who they are. And what they're worth. Bold concept. Um, but it finally happened, And now that it has Things are going to be different. And for Nick Saban, he was talking a little bit about the locker room. How is it going to be different? Going to be different a very major way. Because you have to consider that we're getting Players. That for a lot of these guys. They've lived in a college football world They've been in multiple seasons. Where nobody's made money. Whatever happened within the normal rules, that's that's just what it was. Now, suddenly bam! Things change things changed dramatically. Because what do you get? Well, now the guy who has a locker right next to you could have an endorsement deal That's worth a lot of money. And Saban didn't say who the player was. But he hinted that one of his players a quarterback on the roster. Has been offered a deal. Close to a million dollars. Not Mac Jones. He just got drafted in the first round. So this is somebody that has not been the starter at Alabama is now getting of million dollars nearly a million dollars in an endorsement deal. Nobody else on the team is going to be making that kind of money. Nobody else on that team has seen that kind of money before. How do you handle that? It's

And you know if you look at a guy like that. It's a championship kind of warning right. We've had to cha well. We've had more than two but two of the champions that have been declared this year. We have alabama winning the championship back in january. Milwaukee doing it last night. A champion yourself. Jeff how would you put into words. What what jaanus. And that crew are experiencing as they wake up this morning absolutely remarkable. I mean listen. What janas did you play in your best. The biggest moment. it just doesn't happen that often. I mean what a special moment for him to literally put the team on his back and carry them to victory the way he did and you seem with the trophies. You see the joy. I think my favorite part about him is. He thanked everybody. I mean he talked about listening. I couldn't have gotten here by myself. Thank his family. His friends is coach. Is like he gets it right. He's one of those guys who understands. This isn't just me getting us here. This is all the people who have sacrificed his mom who he said. Continuously work to keep him playing and being able to. You know to to chase his dream. That's the part that i love. So much right as he understands in context how big this is not just about this one championship but that everybody around him gets to celebrate. I absolutely love agreeing. and kimberly. While the sport that you cover primarily is football no one knows a story or how to capture it better than you do. And the story of jaanus. This kid from athens greece coming here. And doing this in milwaukee. It's a remarkable story. One hundred percent greenie as the daughter of immigrants the way he talked about his upbringing. That resonated with me cheaply when you see these struggles that the obstacles that your parents go through to to put you in a better situation. There's nothing sweeter than that and that picture of him crying on the bench that broke me because that was beautiful. One time his mother was selling things street. that's how he described it now. He's an nba champion on top of the world congratulations. Nobody thinks we're getting up with us. And this conversation continues. I take their next on. Espn hey this is bomani jones. "nick saban" Discussed on Get Up!

"Gatorade is there to help you. Fuel it because greatness starts with g hyping. Your champions called the bucks. Tom brady and the tampa. Bay buccaneers for at the white house yesterday. Tb twelve dropped. Some jokes on the president. Listen not a lot of people think that we could have won. In fact i think about forty percent of people still. Don't think we won. I understand that. Mr president had a game in chicago where i forgot would down. It was a lost track of one down in twenty one years of playing and they started calling me sleep. Tom would they do that to me. All right so that was brady yesterday. Which was very interesting. And it's just it's funny. I let me just ask that question very quickly. Why what's face kimberly. Is he funny or not. Is twenty twenty one. Tom brady funny. of course he's funny. This is literally greedy. We have been waiting to see for twenty one years and soak it up greenie. There's no question about it. This is funny do you think. Do you think tom brady is genuinely funny. He's funny but he's also rates right he also sometimes when when you've got a little bit of money a little bit of success jokes talk a little bit funnier right. Got all those rings jokes. A little bit funnier. Everything's not everything he's been saying. A tweeting is hilarious. Right i get it. But i'm like man with all that success. Right look what. He's married to little money in the pocket. You might have some people right now. These jokes tweets forum. You never know though. Chris rock famously. Said money will turn a bald spot into a part. That's how that goes but let me let me cut jeff saturday right down to the quick. Who's funnier tom. Brady your buddy peyton manning. Oh main komo komo liz. You've seen him on saturday night live. He crushes them. Go against my boy. Come on man. And i was. I was cheating the answer to anything with. Jeff is always peyton manning and the meantime. I much more interesting than dan. Something that brady said in an interview with jim gray. We're getting just a little bit of a glimpse this morning as to what motivates brady so remember last month with brady said that he was stunned to learn that. An unnamed other team decided to stick with its corn quarterback rather than to come after him. Tom brady he said i was thinking. You're sticking with that guy. He still won't say which team it was but he did say this to jim gray. He said there's private things for me. That are going to remain motivational. They know who they are. It's fine everyone has a choice to choose. I think what you realize. There's not as many smart people as you think. And then listen to this. He goes on to say. That's the reality. I think it'd be a no brainer if you said. Hey you've got a chance to get wayne gretzky on your team. You got a chance to have michael jordan on your team. We don't need him. no thanks. We're good. That was in an interview with jim gray and so many things about that that i find fascinating jeff. I think a lot of us have put brady in the conversation with the michael. Jordan's wayne gretzky's. I'm not sure i've ever heard him put himself in that conversation. What do you think of that jeff..

Ben and you find. He's more confident now. Well how do you know that. He's progressed away has been. What have you seen that. Be able to make that statement. First of all i mean. I think he's played well this spring. I think he showed good. Leadership is made progress. I think he understands the offense worked. Hard So you know i can make the statement because i watched them practice every day. But i don't know how much practice you saw. And and there's no truth to the rumor that the reporter is now in the witness protection program lane kiffin watching that from afar. He used to watch it from a distance. How to break up Nick Saban's monopoly at Alabama to improve college football

"Today headline How to break up savings monopoly in Alabama to save college football. And the opening line of the piece said. Is this what we want college football to be? Saving, winning it all at least every other year, mixed in with an occasional title for Clemson or Ohio State and half the country west of Kansas, having little reason to tune in. I mentioned last night's ratings all time low in the college football playoff era. Least watched national championship game of the playoff era 27% off last year's numbers. There is a there is a fatigue. To dominance. For whatever reason. This is like clockwork when when a team wins. It is really good year after year after year. Some get tired of it. The dynasty that dominates turns into fatigue. Um If you don't like Alabama, winning naturally, and the fact is, as I mentioned earlier, Nick Saban has more national championships than the 129 FBS coaches combined. Think of that. For a second. He's got seven. That's more than all the active coaches if he added of altogether that seems impossible. They've won six of the last 12. Alabama's one half the BCS and college football playoff championships.
