"Down under? You know, this is just an absolutely extraordinary situation, isn't it Zayn? It is just past 4 o'clock in the morning in Melbourne. There's a small group of local reporters in the airport waiting to see if he comes through passport control. According to those reporters, he hasn't yet Visa complications is what we all understand to be the situation here. But you're absolutely right. The mood in Australia and in Melbourne is one of fury, really, about this situation. Melbourne was one of the most locked down cities in the world last year, some 260 days that residents there were confined to their homes. There are thousands of Australians who are fully vaccinated overseas who can't get home to see their family and their loved ones. And now this perception that this tennis star has been given preferential treatment. We'll come to that in just a moment because the Australian open deny that he's been in preferential treatment, but there is no doubt that people in Melbourne and Australia are really unhappy about this situation. I think it's a disgrace. We've all done the right thing we've all gone out and got our jobs and our boosters and we have someone that's come from overseas and all of a sudden he's been exempt and can play and I think it's an absolute disgrace and I won't be watching it. I'm a Melbourne boy but I'm traveling from overseas. And I can sort of just pick up the enmity and sort of aggression towards him. So I guess he might even get booed when he gets up onto the court. I really don't agree with there being one rule for one and out of the rule for others. So I feel that they should be some, you shouldn't be allowed to come. It's his choice not to be vaccinated, which is fine, and I think the government here has made the choice that, you know, you should be vaccinated. There is so much a stake here. Novak Djokovic is currently the world's top ranked male player. He's going for what would be a tenth Australian open title. And if he is able to play and win the tournament, he'd have 21 Grand Slam singles titles, which were taking past Raphael Nadal and Roger Federer. So that would be a huge achievement, but of course that now remains a very big if. The tournament says he can play the tournament say that his application received a rigorous review of two independent panels of experts and the tournament stated that those panels were reviewing these applications blindly, so they received 26 applications for these exemptions. They approved apparently a handful of them Djokovic being one of them, but they didn't know it was Novak Djokovic that they were approving. It remains to be seen if he can get into the country. And even if he does, he's going to face this backlash now when he turns up at the Australian open. And some people very close to him are saying he needs to come out and be open and state why he has applied for this exemption. Why is it that one of the fittest and healthiest and most successful athletes in the world is not able to be vaccinated, he needs to come out and tell everybody why that is. And despite all of his accolades that you just listed out, I mean, Australians, as I mentioned, have very little appetite for someone being treated in a special manner just because they are famous and extremely successful. Don Vidal life was there. Thank you so much. All right, the president of Kazakhstan promises to crack down on violent protests across the country. This is video from the city of a Maltese, one of several cities, including the capital where protesters have attacked government buildings, their angry because of a fuel price hike, especially considering that Kazakhstan is a fuel exporter with extremely vast reserves. The country's government, including the prime minister, have resigned in light of the situation international diplomatic editor, Nick Robinson joins us live now. So here's the thing. Kazakhstan likes to sort of project this image of political stability, but what we're seeing on the ground there is anything but we're seeing some of the worst unrest in that country in over a decade. There are reports that the presidential residence has actually been set on fire. What are we hearing? Yeah, the reports as well that the airport at Al Mahdi has now been taken control of by the protesters. That's something that the Russian state news agency is reporting. That's something as well that respected Kazakh independent media outlet has been reporting. It is unclear what's exactly happening in the country right now, partly because there's an Internet blackout, partly because the phone lines appear to be down. The electricity in some parts of Al matti is also off. So this is a very, very fluid situation. And I think when the president spoke a couple of hours ago, you got a sense

"Truss has pulled out of a BBC One interview with Nick Robinson that was due to air later this evening. Her team said this was because she had a really busy schedule and wasn't able to fit in. There's interview. Of course in about a week's time Caroline, we're going to know who is the new prime minister and the new leader of the Conservative Party. Yeah, I'm not sure that that excuses really washed with many people, the idea that she's got a busy schedule. I think there is more criticism that the front runner is not putting themselves up for real scrutiny by the media, but mind you this kind of follows Boris Johnson, right? Who was also refused to do a lot of kind of big set piece sit down interviews. Caroline, you're absolutely right. And there's also rumors in the papers today that Liz truss is trying to put in energy bill together to help households, and this is something that we haven't heard from her or is she scenic. They just said there's how available, but we don't actually know what that is, and we've seen the price cap saw from off gem, so I wonder if they just buy a little bit of time to come up with a big package. Who knows? Yeah, absolutely. We'll watch that political story. Thank you so much Leanne ganz with the day ahead. Now, China's big 5 bangs sort of set to finish up reporting earnings this week. You've got to investors closely watching what this means for the world's second largest economy joining us now for more is ishika Mukherjee our Asia stocks editor in Singapore, massive bangs, hugely important, what are we expecting and watching really from these big banks reporting how much is the mortgage crunch change things for them? He, so yeah, today we have ICBC, which is the world's biggest bank by assets and China construction bank, a bank of China, all of them reporting, earnings, a few others later this week, all the major lenders coming up, investors are essentially going to be watching the impact of a whole mortgage boycott crisis that's been raging across the country over the past few weeks. Essentially homeowners who have refused to pay their mortgages on unfinished projects, projects that are either delayed, the construction of which is delayed or stopped. And this is going to hit the banks, bottom line, pretty hard. You already saw agricultural bank of China who announced results yesterday. They said that overdue loans were double the estimated amount in the latest quarter. So that's going to be the key thing to watch right now. Yeah, okay, so that's some of the biggest banks in the world reporting. So hugely important, but also I think very important. The tensions between the U.S. and China, it's not the politics, though, that is really spooking U.S. investors in China. It's actually COVID still, isn't it? Absolutely, so China isn't letting go of its COVID zero policy. Just this morning we saw that Chengdu is announcing new restrictions on

"Go to cut our energy consumption. I suggest that we organize this reduction together. If we do not do this, if everyone does not do their part, some sudden gas cuts could take place overnight, with serious economic and social consequences. That was the French prime minister Elizabeth Barnes speaking through a translator, more member states are calling for a price cap on energy in Europe, the Czech Republic which holds the rotating presidency of the EU has called an extraordinary meeting of energy ministers on the 9th of September. Meanwhile, European Central Bank chief economist Philip lane has urged a steady pace of rate hikes to fight inflation. The Irish official pushed back against colleagues who were floating a 75 basis point hike at next week's meeting. Of course, where we are now where the policy is zero is below any version of the terminal race. So we set in July and it's fairly obvious and the market believes that the surveys are anticipated is there will be a series of hikes coming up. But of course what the big debate is exactly how high should the accumulative increase be. European Central Bank, chief economist, Philip lane, speaking there. The latest reading for Euro area price growth is due tomorrow with economists expecting an acceleration to an all time high of 9%. Minneapolis fed president Neil kashkari says that he's happy to see a market sell off after fed chair Jay Powell's hawkish speech in Jackson hole last week, he told Bloomberg's odd lots podcast investors finally realize how serious the Central Bank is about bringing inflation under control. To me, the most costly mistake we will make is if we get fooled thinking, oh, we've got inflation licked. Now let's go cut interest rates because the economy is showing signs of weakening these. And so the way to deal with the lags for me is just to get somewhere and sit there until we're really convinced that we've got inflation linked. That was Minneapolis fed president Neil kashkari speaking to Bloomberg. And the U.S. is urging for a controlled shutdown of the Russia seized zapper of nuclear power plant in Ukraine. It says that would be the safest option due to continued shelling around Europe's largest such facility. The International Atomic Energy Agency is conducting an inspection of the plant. Ukraine's president Vladimir zelensky is warning the situation remains dangerous. Okay, those are our top stories for you this morning. Let's get over to Bloomberg's Leon garin's, who is looking at what is ahead today in markets and the economy, good morning, Leanne. Caroline good morning to you, so at 10 a.m. UK time will be watching out for this month's Euro area confidence survey. So keep a close eye on those, Senate 1 p.m. will have the latest German CPI reading for you, followed at 3 p.m. by U.S. conference board consumer confidence survey also out. Later ECB governor council member Robert holtzman will be among guests speaking on inflation at the alfbach forum in Austria. Also later today, New York fed president John Williams speaks at an event hosted by The Wall Street Journal. Meanwhile, here in the UK, 40,000 BT workers including open reach engineers and call center staff are holding fresh strikes. Now that is in a row overpay and finally, Liz truss has pulled out of a BBC One interview with Nick Robinson that was due to air this evening, her team said this was because she has an extremely busy schedule ahead of the leadership vote and we should find out who the next prime minister is in a week's time Caroline. Okay, yeah, very interesting. Liz trusts facing a lot of criticism for not speaking enough to the media, despite all of the hustings that we've had over the summer, but very interesting. Thank you so much, Leanne karens, with our look ahead to what's happening today and the rest of the week. Right, lots coming out of China though this morning. China is pushing back, enforcing COVID lockdown restrictions in areas around Beijing more intensively, it's also getting more aggressive in bolstering the yuan setting the reference rate at the second strongest on record. And of course, with some of China's biggest banks reporting earnings this week, investors are close, closely watching what is happening with the world's second largest economy. So let's bring in ishika Mukherjee, who is our Asia stocks editor in Singapore, ishika, welcome to the program. Thanks for being with us. We're seeing U.S. investors into China drop because of fears and it's not really for his around business. It's actually fears around zero COVID. Why do you think that that is actually the biggest issue now for investors? It's not the political tensions. It's all about COVID. Yeah, absolutely. So the U.S. China business council to the survey and found that only 51% of American firms were optimistic about the 5 year outlook for China. And that's down from 69% last year and it's actually a record low. And the main reason is the lockdowns rather than U.S. China political tensions because the impact is very immediate. Automakers, especially Tesla faced huge production issues when Shanghai was shut down, last quarter, and just this morning we're seeing more lockdown news and say parts of Shenzhen or Chengdu, so these lockdowns are having a big impact on the investment outlook for these companies. Many have already halted or delayed their plans to invest in the country. And with China sticking to its COVID zero policy, that doesn't seem to be any change in sentiment there. In fact, things are just getting worse. And like my colleague James mega pointed out on Bloomberg television, China needs these capital flows. They needed to move up the value chain of production. So this is coming at an extremely an opportune time for them as well. Yeah, absolutely. So that's the kind of external perspective. But what about internally the banks reporting so industrial commercial bank of China, China construction bank, bank of China, lots of the big state owned lenders are reporting. Yeah, big earnings coming out today. The main thing that investors are going to be watching is the impact of the mortgage payment boycotts that we've been seeing across the country across China by homeowners because they're just sick of the delayed or unfinished construction projects on their homes. How this adds up and how the shows up in bank earnings is going to be one to watch. We had agricultural bank of China report earnings yesterday and the overdue loans on mortgage payments was twice the estimated amount. So this is really going to hurt the bottom line for them. Yeah, it is. Despite the extra push that the government seems to be giving, banks that actually continue lending, in fact, sort of expand lending, right? Yeah, so that's interesting. So they're basically taking a margin risk every time the PBOC cuts industry, right? And that's what that's the part that monetary authorities are on in China. So that's bad and at the same time demand is not picking up, so it's not really like even though the government is trying to push these loans through the economy, there's just not enough and demand. So you're going to see bank margins get pretty high pretty badly rather. In the previous quarter and this one as well. Okay. Thank you so much for being with me this morning. As you can look at our Asia stocks editor in Singapore talking us through what's happening in China, both the perspective from U.S.

"Them suck. But they see the reason they didn't like us and our show, I don't know about us, but they didn't like me. Was that that show wasn't supposed to exist on an all news channel. It was too weird, you know? I kept the channel alive. It did for a little while, and then I think it was 6 years, 6 year run we have of that show, but they didn't, they didn't want that show. The boss Phil balboni felt that we didn't just didn't fit in with what they were trying to do. He went on to channel 5, didn't he? He was a channel 5 before then. Before that. He runs a international news thing now. Something like that, yeah. It was pants all the way up to his nipples. He puts his pants up so high. You should go there and apply for a job, Mike. As soon as he sees you. No, I bring back all these warm memories. Once I quit being what was I quit being a bad person in a druggie, I wrote them a note saying, you know, I'm remarried now. I mean, how about we do something that he wrote back? He says, I think I should be completely candid with you. Totally honest. He says, we both survived the atoms era here. I think we should just leave it at that. Oh man. I remember hanging out at spring training with you and Keith oberman was talking to us, okay? Right. Right. So Keith, and I was maybe 23 at the time and at the time, Keith olbermann and Dan Patrick were like these. The big show. Yeah. So Keith olbermann talks is talking to us 'cause he used to watch the show because Bill peto, your side, the sidekick at the time. I had just gone down there. And he's like, and he's talking to us and we're like, and I'm sitting there going like, wow, Keith oberman is talking to me and asking me all these questions about peto. And so then eventually, he wouldn't leave us alone. And it's like, this fucking guy won't leave us alone. He was following us. Everywhere. Like, he turned into like, and he was like the biggest star in sports broadcast at the time. It was like hanging out. And I'm like, this guy, he's like, he was being a pest. Get the hell out of here, man. He was saying you smoke a pipe. He would be out there smoking a pipe. We're trying to shake one of those. We were trying to shake them. And he wouldn't leave us. I need more. I want more stories about peto. He'd say, you know, remember he was obsessed with Bill peto. Yeah, it was like two hours. I was like, dude. We gotta get out of here. Keith over, man. I know. He was a pain in our ass that time. So how about when this is a fun fun story? Florida, we go to Florida. Do you remember dick Robinson? You know, from the cannabis program. Dick Robinson tracks us down at the la Quinta in Fort Myers. It was you and me and we had a camera guy too. They always put us at the best places. And where's the mint on the pillow? Wait a minute. Where's the pillow? So we're at la Quinta. So dick Robinson comes across from West Palm Beach where he had his yacht in his Manchin. He goes over to visit with us and hang around with us while we're doing our shooting. And first, we went to Taco Bell. Now, Nick Robinson is very well off guy, you know, he's obviously and he's a very funny guy. He owns a Connecticut school of broadcast. Yes. And we drive to the Taco Bell. And he's going to pay for this. He pulls out his only head on and we never wallet. He just had a credit card in his pocket. Just loose. So we go to the drive-through. We order this stuff, and you ordered something volcano taco. Super hot. Somehow, dick Robinson, not only did he spill his large Pepsi, diet Pepsi, he's wearing white sailor boy pants, you know, from yachtsman pits. He fills this medium Dr Pepper diet Pepsi on his pants. So it looked like he had brown stain from his knee to his nuts. I mean, he had spilled it pretty good on there and we're walking around on the beach. He had just had a colonoscopy. Yes, he had a colon thing and he's eating this volcano by mistake he's eating Eric's. Jesus Christ. He had a colostomy bag? No, he said operation or something. He says, he takes a bike and goes, oh, Christ, he goes, this is hot. This is hot. We know it's going to be twice as hot coming out of his butt. So we go to the beach. And he's walking up to girls on the beach. Hey, why are you on a TV? Mike Adams over here. Are they on the camera? And he's walking up to him with a stain. And then he's got he's going up the girls and asking them to come on TV. And look at this guy with a straw hat, white pants with a shit. It was so funny to watch him though. Is he still alive? Yes. He's 80 something. No. Was he then? That was 30 years ago. Yeah, he's probably, you know, 60. I mean, he's got to be 80. He's born probably in the 30s. You know, I don't know. He was always trying to get you to do things for free at sea. Is that right? Or was he paying you? We trying to do something, but were you trying to get something or was he trying to get? Yeah, well, I wasn't trying to get a new scholarship to the Connecticut school of broadcasting at that point, but yeah, he was, you know, he wanted to hang around with us. And every time I see him now, hey, Mikey, babe. How you doing? Well, I can't stop. He yells out la Quinta. So Eric was very good at pranking and humiliating people when he wanted to. He was very, very good at it. And of course I had an appetite for that kind of shit. I have a sick, dark sense of humor when it comes to that stuff. But one time, here's what Eric did to me. There's an intern there. And I say the inter, can you do me a favor? Go give me a snap, or just fuck that. Eric says, you don't even know his name, do you? Any of the interns names? He didn't know any of them. I said, and I didn't want to get embarrassed so I said, yes, I do. Yeah, I know his name. You said, so what's his name? I used to offer you money. Right in front of you. I would say, if you know any of these kids names, $20 for each of them. I would give you $20. Right. And I knew any of their names. I guess. Bobby, now I know it's not. Everybody knows an asshole. But this is the kind of thing he would do. He gets you real good when you weren't thinking about it. The other thing that you had that made this show great. To me, was the endings. You would somehow call the weirdest shit you've ever seen off the satellite and we would end our show with it. Like they did later, they would do that on The Daily Show later. Moment of copied you. They copied you. I wasn't my idea. You did all that. It was great. But you'd see Iranian women in bathing suits, bouncing on a trampoline with their boobs jumping up and down. You'd see a Japanese guy singing soprano music, you know, just weird shit that you'd find somewhere and we'd close the show with it and it was always back timed exactly to end right when they were in the show. It's called a dead roll. I liked the end of the show, not because I get to get to go home, but because it was the funniest part of the show was the endings. What came on after your show? Norm richa, Norman. Friday nights, norm risha, who was, he was very fat. He was Lebanese and Lebanese. Fat didn't let in his father, norm got his money. I was just telling Mike this upstairs in your house. Norm got his money because his father created or invented, do you ever go to like a dick sporting goods or the circular things that they put the clothes on? Hangers. Hangers, whatever they're called. Yeah. Yet norm's dad invented the tracks. Yeah, okay. The clothing rack that is into that. The round ones. Yeah. Not the straight ones. Just the round ones. What a great invention and he made a killing on it. Yeah. That's where norm got his money, May he rest in peace. Norm is no longer has passed away. I went out to have chicken wings with him one time and I swear to God he had 50 of them. He was like, it was like, it was like Paul Newman in cool hand Luke. I could eat 50 eggs. I saw him eat 50 chicken wings. And he wouldn't just eat the bone would be totally clean when he put it back down on the dish. The bone would be totally stripped of everything, gristle, elbow joints, whatever was in there. I saw him do it. But he was a real nice guy, Norman Reese. I can't say another bad word about him because it's not fair. He's not here. He's not here to protect himself. What would he say about you? We got along pretty good, you know. He would say if you only prepared. That's right. It's always the if that comes first. You know, we did a karaoke thing. You know, I've always been big with the karaoke fact. We got Joe and Jerry coming into a little karaoke here in a few minutes. That's right. But back then we'd bring in the karaoke dude and he was talking himself way too seriously. We had a karaoke guy who used to do bars. The Frank Sinatra guy old blue thighs. Yeah. He'd come in and we'd have a contest. And the semifinalist who was going to return the following week was this fat which she had to be about 350 pound woman. And you know what she was singing? Waterloo by ABBA. You remember that? Yeah. It was so awful. And she stands in and she's fat. I mean, she's fucking huge. And she's singing Waterloo and I'm thinking. She's singing. In fact, karaoke chicks singing Waterloo. And you say, well, that's what people came to expect on the show was not unusual stuff, you know? And we had to continually fulfill that obligation. With oddities. And strangers, Eric one time showed me that he had an incredible talent for. I remember this vividly. You used to sing TV theme songs. You'd put words to instrumental TV theme songs. Oh, yeah, because we would run those commercials. Yes. But it was always like, if they want to remember hill street blues, hill street blues, hill street blue, it's like a and then I think, I got my own from when I was a kid, I used to do the same thing. Ready? I'm ready. GD. All right, dream of Jeannie Jeannie. I dream of Genie Genie. You know, you put in your own words, right? Do you have any fresh ones for us? No, I don't have any Christmas for you, Mike. That's too bad. You know, you're so creative with all these shows. What happened to you? Well, just tell me who it was supposed to. I don't know if they're not gonna call me. Want me to call him? Oh, Peter. Yeah. I got a text right here back and forth from him. He's gonna call me. She's gonna call me at 5. No, that's all right. 5 30. I know he's working for MSG. Maybe they're making demands of him. Yeah, they probably are. They can't possibly. So tell us what is going on with hot snakes media. What's the newest greatest thing that people should watch? I have pig royalty that's on that's on discovery plus and that's a great show. This season two of that now. Does anyone in that ever actually have sex with a pig? No, they don't. But no, it's a really good show, and a lot of people watch it. And I'll be the judge of that. If they don't have sex on it, I mean I'm watching for long. No, but you will like it. You should really, really watch it. It's a really, really good show. It's one of the most popular shows on discovery plus. And if you like entertaining, kind of crazy, weird Texas subcultures. You'll really do. My 12 year old Willie loves pigs. Honest to God, that's not a joke. He has pictures of pigs ever since he was three. On his bedroom wall. I promise you your wife will love that show. I promise you, yes, I promise you. And then I know she likes at least one hog. I'm kidding. I'm kidding. And then also discovery plus I have a show called mysterious creatures, which is a cool show about animals, animal human and animal wildlife conflict, which is great because it's not preachy and it's with that guy you like Ben Forrest galante and it's not preachy. A lot of these wildlife shows are like with some bullshit celebrity in a global warming. They have some message for you. Yes, it's not preachy Mongolia. And they don't go anywhere. They're in a voice-over booth and Hollywood, and they don't do anything. And this is all entertaining, kind of like Indiana Jones, and it's a lot of fun. And it's a great show and especially you can watch it with your kids. You can watch it alone. Discovery plus. Discovery plus is like their Netflix type of platform. And you get it for free. So what changes have you seen in the streaming in the cable industry? If you want to call it cable in the last 5 years or so. Well, streaming is good because like you don't have to keep your show to a certain length. Kind of like a podcast, right? It's the same thing as a podcast and with radio with you, right? When you used to have to do teases, you used to have to do act breaks and hook them to the next commercial. Now you don't. Now with streaming, you can just do a show can be however long it needs to be. You don't have to do all those cliffhanger teases. It's a little bit more mature and you can just do a show. It doesn't have to be cut to a half an hour. It can be 47 minutes. If that's the show. Like deaf you, I have one show that's like 17 minutes. I have another one that's 25. You know? And same thing with pig royalty. It can be like anywhere between 42 minutes and 47 minutes. All these shows can be however long they need to be. Which is great. It's like my BM. So you never know, but plus how long they're going to be. You get to edit out anything that might be weak to the story. Exactly right. Yeah, so you get all the strong stuff. You know, when you watch a show on cable and they have that kind of bullshit beginning where you're getting fooled, will they find the treasure or won't? Oh, you know they're not going to find the truth. You know they're not going to find Bigfoot. You know they're not going to find. Just because they asked you know. It's all BS. Are they ever going to get to the bottom of Oak Island? That's what I want. You don't have to do that with these streaming shows. They're a little bit more honest or a little bit more, but they're still just as entertaining. So that's the biggest difference, you know? And the budgets go down. So the other big thing is the budgets are all going down in television 'cause there's so many shows, but again, I worked with no budget in the beginning of my career. Not only did I work with no budget, I didn't get paid. For the producer. Yeah, there was so no budget that I didn't get paid. And I remember when it going into that office one day that we won an Emmy Award in Charlie Kravitz said, you know, Eric, we decided we're going to pay you on Fridays. For just 8 hours, $5 an hour. So I was working, you know, it was one day a week. But anyway, but I'm used to being really creative with getting stuff done. So the budget's being lowered doesn't really affect me as well. No, if there's anybody that can handle and you prove that, doing a show with no budget, no trained personnel. Talent. Well, you know, honestly, but can I just say this? That show we had that was funny. And it was great, and it was nuts. He was the show. He fed, but that's not true though. No, but you know what? I mean, obviously that's you being kind, but no, I appreciate it. I took the handoffs from you though, and I ran with the ball, but these guys know. And people who listen to the podcast know they're funny, you are. But that's nice of you. You really were the creative force behind that show. And I thank you for that. As a matter of fact, Eric, who now is one of the more successful purveyors of programming in America at the time was a 19 year old pen chewing here's the two pens. He'd be so wound up and he'd bust a pen in ink in his mouth. Don't do that. He happened a lot. It happened a lot. Spit would come out of the pens. But it was unbelievable. The amount of work that he did. And I honestly, at the time, I was kind of a messed up person. I had a lot of weird stuff going on in my personal life. So I didn't contribute till I got there at 11 o'clock. You know, and that's the only time I could. But I thank you for that. I'm proud of what you're doing and you're doing great things and it's just the beginning for you. So good luck to you. Thanks, man. Unbelievable. Unbelievable career you've had. And again, starting with zero budget, whatsoever. Eric evangelista, look for all of his stuff on every cable station there is. You probably got to show on every cable cable network, don't you? I have, I have in my career, yes. Yeah, you've had one in every single one. So they all know you. God, I can't wait till they let me do that nude ballerina Tutu thing I wanted to do. "Looks like that I was doing the jousting 'cause they told me to get on the horse and all this stuff. Totally fake. You know, totally, and but it looks real. In the end, it looked like I got jousted off the horse and landed in the mud, which is total bullshit. And I interviewed the MGM lion. We did weird stuff. I wrote an elephant. I mean, it was a great thing. You know, to be able to go down there with a camera and just do whatever you want. And the guy says, the king, he says, are you ready? Othello. Yes, I'm ready. Your highness. Are you ready, Michael? I said, I'm scared, shitless, sir. And they bleeped it out. We used to put in stuff like that all the time, though, because we had that kind of show where we could do it. And again, this all boils down to talent on the part of both of you guys because with so many iPhones out there right now. So everybody can do these for people to create their own little videos. Most of them suck. Friday nights, norm risha, who was,.

We're going to check in now on the record number of anti protest bills that Republicans have introduced this year. Several have already become law. In Florida, For example, Governor Ron De Santis signed what he calls anti riot legislation. It includes new penalties for protesters and for local governments that decreased law enforcement budgets in Oklahoma driver's who unintentionally hit protesters now have immunity. These bills and others follow months of large scale, mostly peaceful demonstrations against police brutality, and these bills are raising red flags among First Amendment experts. Joining me now is Nick Robinson. He is a senior legal adviser at the International Center for Not for Profit Log, Nick Robinson. Welcome. Thanks for having me So we're just four months into the 2021 legislative seasoned how many bills have been introduced that would fit under this umbrella of anti riot or anti protest legislation since the killing of George Floyd of this past, May we've seen over 90 anti protest bills introduced in 35 States. That undermined the right to peaceful assembly and what are some of the common themes that you're seeing across these bills? Many of these bills increased penalties for obstructing traffic or sidewalks, which often happens during protests. So a bell in Tennessee that was enacted in August increased the penalty to a year in jail. If protesters make it inconvenient to use a sidewalk. Many of them also expand and I riding laws so in Florida governor dissented recently signed this entire major anti protest bell. Into into law, and one of the most controversial parts is how it defines rioting to potentially capture peaceful protesters who engage in no violence at all. S O. For example, if you're Let's have a large protest and a handful of people decide to kick over a trash can. You could potentially be arrested for riding for just being part of that same crowd. Andhra penalties are extremes so under the new law, writings of felony And if there's more than 23 people in the crowd, it could be punishable by up to 15 years in jail. So these vague provisions and these really life altering penalties can easily intimidate peaceful protesters. Are these bills constitutional? I mean, we've all read the First Amendment, It protects freedom of speech. It protects the right of people peaceably to assemble. Yes. So we're already seeing many of these bells that they're getting past being challenged in court, and I think we're going to see a number of more constitutional challenges going forward. I think on on one level, they're going to be challenged based on viewpoint discrimination because some of the state legislators were passing these bills. Seem to be targeting the tactics. Such a street protest of black lives matter. You know a specific protest movement. It's unconstitutional to target a protest group. Just because you disagree with their message. We're also going to see challenges I think for particularly is anti riot acts for just being over broad and vague. To stay with Florida for second Governor De Santis says what he is signed and I'll quote him is the strongest anti looting, anti writing pro law enforcement piece of legislation in the country. He is framing this as support for police and I want to note that most of the protests in Florida as elsewhere in the last year were peaceful. There were some incidents of violence yes, but mostly peaceful. But this is a message that will that will resonate and clearly is among Republicans across the country. Yeah, and I think that's right to take a step back and say, you know, look, this was in direct response to the Black lives matter. Protests of last summer, we should be clear this. It's already illegal. To engage in violence to engage in property destruction. The police have plenty of tools to deal with those those kinds of challenges. What these bills are doing is they're sending an intimidating message to peaceful protesters. I think we should step back and realize. That you know when we think about positive social change in this country, whether it was the civil rights movement fights for LGBT Q rights, women's suffrage, They all came out of protest movements. And so now we're seeing these acts that undermine peaceful assembly. And this comes with, you know serious costs to the future of our democracy. "And let me bring nick robinson back into this conversation. The fact that so many dozens of bills being introduced at once a number in many states. And we're when we're talking about these motorists. We also are talking about police officers. I mean there have been about one hundred motorist running over protesters in the last month. But if you can talk about in. several police. Having used their cars as weapons against protestors like in detroit and june and officer driving police. suv through a crowd. Sending protesters flying to new york. Police officers did likewise at a black lives. Matter protests may and twenty twenty neck. No that's exactly right. And then we've also seen a police circulating on social media Pictures of drivers hitting protesters seemingly encouraging drivers To to run into protesters are to protesters with their car. And this you know criminal The and and the the we not only see the this as a problem we we see a number of bells being introduced would strengthen stand your ground laws and apply them anytime. that People can show that there's a quote unquote ryan occurring so this week applies in the florida. Bill that just passed or in alabama kentucky mississippi until again the billy use deadly force against protesters And you know this is part of a larger movement by politicians that are introducing these bells. That are trying to paint all protesters as rioters pill. Blackhawks sanction between black lives matter protesters and insurrectionists the domestic terrorists in washington dc overrunning the capital beating police officers for example. How do they make that distinction. So they don't hold them accountable. Yes so i think i think they're. They're the the assumption here is these are kind of back. The blue belles often so often passed with a whole number of provisions. That would do things like stop the defunding of local police departments and so they're seen as supporting the police and so i think they view them as being applied by the police in a certain type of way read. The next greater L A Today at one and 6 30 on KCRW. This is press play on KCRW I'm Madeleine brand. Former President Donald Trump. Second impeachment trial begins tomorrow. In a brief filed this morning, His lawyers argued that Trump quote did not direct anyone to commit unlawful actions and that the case should be dismissed entirely because he can't be held responsible for the actions of a quote Small group of criminals. Unsurprisingly, the House impeachment managers rejected that request. But the brief gives us more clues about the president's plan defense. It's Monday. So Jessica Levinson is here to talk about this. She's a law professor at Loyola Law School and our regular legal eagle here in press play high Happy favorite day of my week. Oh, yeah. So nice. I'm fine. Thank you. So we have talked about this trial a lot. Even I on the show already. So let's not spend too much time on it. But tell us more about the nuggets of information you've gleaned from this brief in terms of how they plan. His lawyers plan to defend him. I think you laid it out really? Well, the question actually, I mean, I think there's two big buckets of defense and the first is we shouldn't be even having this trial at all. It's not constitutional toe have an impeachment trial for somebody who's no longer in office. You know, I've talked about the many reasons why I think that doesn't hold any constitutional water, so to speak, and then the other bucket is really what you said in the question, which is basically You can't draw enough of a line between what President Trump said. And then what happened? Which is funny, because if you look at One of the things that the House managers want to do. They want to show that video of President Trump's speaking and then movement based on cell phone data of people walking in a straight line to the capital. So those are the two big areas of defense. The we shouldn't even be having the trial and okay, even if we're here, you can't prove that the president caused this behavior. Yeah, well, it's interesting because I wonder if they're going to focus on the ward fight, You know, kind of like what is the meaning of is when he said, you know, you should go fight. He didn't. He's probably going to say, Well, I didn't mean that literally. Where is there going to interpret it as a literal instruction? Go fight. I think that's a lot of what's gonna happen and what you're going to see is the House managers say, Let's not just pick and choose what you know what you're pointing to One word here. There. Let's look at the overall context of what happen. And remember, this is not a court of law, so we're not subject to the rules of evidence they can bring in things that happened three months ago. Two months ago, the president saying over and over again, the election is going to be stolen and we need to do something about it, and they're going to essentially ask You know they're going to ask the Senate to the jurors to say, Look, you can draw that line. There is a direct connection, not just between what was said. In that particular speech. But if you look at everything are surrounding it, and then I think Republicans will try and say, or the president's defense will try and say, Well, okay, but let's look at this word here and then I had this other place. The president said peacefully. So they're gonna I think, try and have a much more microscopic view and say, Don't look at the whole picture. Let's just take kind of parts and take a piece by piece approach. OK, well, Seymour in the coming days, Of course, I want to talk to you about this other story in the news that's related to $0.7 billion defamation lawsuit that the voting machine companies Smartmatic filed against Fox News and some of the hosts, and I think we're already seeing the fall out. Lou Dobbs. His show was canceled. Not AH, highly rated show. Um and advertisers have largely shunned it so his show was canceled and he was one of the host named in the suit. So first explain the suit. It's a lot of money. $2.7 billion. How are they? Alleging that Fox News to fame them? That $2.7 million still likely a lot of money. So what they're essentially saying is that when Fox News and members of Fox News and guests on Fox News Said Yes. The election was stolen and he know who helped flip that election. Smartmatic. They were involved. They're voting machines were involved and they created this corruption. They created the stolen election or they helped to facilitate it. What Smartmatic is saying here is that's a false statement. You knew it was false. You said it anyway, and there was damaged that happened. As a result, we've lost an enormous amount of business and to that NATO very long. Is it absolutely beautiful Legal writing when you look at It's alleged in the suit, and there's a great line in their two plus two equals for the Earth is round in this election was not stolen. I'm paraphrasing, but that's what it boils down to which is saying. You made false statements and they heard us. However, Dobbs Jeannine Pirro, another host, named in the suit there, on the opinion side of Fox, Um and then Giuliani is named in this Sidney Powell. They're not even on Fox News, his staff. They were just guests. So does that change things? S so it doesn't. It doesn't what we're looking for. Not if we're not looking at whether the person's title is opinion or reporter. What we're looking to is what they said. Did they make a statement that sounded like it was an opinion based statement, which would not give rise to defamation, Or did they make a statement of fact which could give rise to defamation?.

K. is the issue that has vexed this country for months question by the BBC's Nick Robinson today the prime minister dismissed some of the reports about a possible hold border in Ireland yesterday at the suggested that there would be a string of border use not only are rich bold but not fall back are you saying that simply isn't true yes that's not what we're proposing a tool you can say. people who think there will be a whole a bold and just a few miles away from the apps in old absolutely you know and then there were very good reasons why that would not be a good idea and I think everybody who's familiar with the situation in in it are the norm now then comes time why we would would pay for but for for for for practical reasons and and also you know for for reasons of sentiment that we typically take the on the star wedding continued questioning about border posts on the Irish border the prime minister said there must be some checks so Minh autumn say there should be no checks anywhere on the island via the net they call the holding of the border they say it will begin to principles Good Friday agreement people say forget made the call to be check somewhere if we're going to be in a different economic arrangements well I'm with the second group Nick because that's just the reality and I think that what we're coming up to now is as it were the critical moment of choice for us as friends and partners apart how we proceed because in the end a sovereign United country must have a single customs territory and when the U. K. withdrawals from the E. U. that must be the state of affairs that we haven't but there are plenty of ways in which we can facilitate north south trade plenty ways which we can address the problem. the U. K. prime minister Boris Johnson speaking to my colleague Nick Robinson what a short time ago I spoke too much talk about Ron who is the managing director of the Eurasia group in Europe it's a political risk research and consulting firm only the U. K. site there is a a suggestion view the details have been leaked all redundant because they come from an old paper from a couple of weeks ago and actually the government is fully committed to also kinda border US possible not a string of customs controls and not actually more detail around these proposals is going to be forthcoming over the course of the next few days so distancing frankly the government's position from the details I will be yesterday now on the European side I think frankly the suggestions the details from yesterday have gone down very badly the Irish government is if if you thought these are essentially equivalent to the kinda plans they would be to implement in a no deal scenario so the idea that the Irish prime minister could sell these in a deal scenario is is friendly politically announced officer in Dublin and then of course the role of the questions and concerns the east side has been talking about for a very long time what's the border fully open that call be controls on the island the filing and all those problems remain so I think the two sides of very far pulse at the moment when you say that the U. K. is distancing itself from what has been leaked is there any suggestion that the leaks form the basis of what the UK government is actually thinking yes they do I think the starting position for the UK government now different to Theresa may is stop brexit create consequences and changes on the island of Ireland not least the return of the border. and what the government is trying to do with its proposal is to soften the border dot will necessarily return is a result of brexit to reason may and had to go she ate all the rope it's had a very different approach in December two thousand and seventeen they committed to essentially no change on the island lies in full status quo and the way they deliver thought was obviously through this box stopping the backstop is is the vehicle that delivers both regulate realignment but also a single customs territory. Johnson now once the U. K. to be in a single customs territory Northern Ireland England Scotland Wales and believe that is absolutely essential for state sovereignty for the U. K. after brexit but obviously creates a north south border albeit one not softened so so the acknowledgement on the pulse of the U. K. government on the Boris Johnson that they will need to be customs checks what is it that we are specifically talking about all the differences in terms of the kinds of goods that are being looked at is agriculture being seen as separate from manufacturing goods actually what's new about the leaks yesterday's more details about how the government believes the border will operate in a world where Boris Johnson delivers an agreement and ultimately a long term vision and the vision of brexit bodies I can tweak how the distal free trade agreement in that unit how does the Irish border operates and the U. K. believes that will need to be controls on either side of the border that regulate power it's not regulate things like rules of origin that there will be a degree of regulate tree equivalent. the European side has many problems with this I think firstly from that perspective you cannot separate how regulations and customs everything on the European side stall and works on the basis of its customs framework so in order for that to be any trade with the E. U. thank you I need to engage with the E. U. customs framework a second big problem is awful the government's proposals to work is very dependent on a lots of exemptions and it's not Claire the easier side is willing to make those exemptions third big problem is it relies on technology in the U. side but very clear about the kind of technology the government is talking about is not going to be ready until the medium term so this gives you a flavor of some of the ideas that are a problem for the ears site based on what the government's currently proposing and in terms of the bigger picture all of approaches and asks you choose we know that the E. U. side to saying that they're willing to continue to talk. since the patience is running thin that if you if you want to start from a base of zero and build something completely new there's very little time to do that I think really now the next few days absolutely critical to the government's plans involving away thought dork feels it can engage in it so I think what we'll see from both sides is this idea of a tunnel when negotiators are such begin a lock themselves away and trying to hammer out a legal text the ultimately results in a deal among European heads of state in a few weeks time at this October European Council so the next few days will give us a sense of whether a tunnel is a realistic possibility or not if it is in the terms of the deal in October increase but I think in order for it to happen Boris Johnson is going to have to be you pretty much fully towards the E. U. position which essentially means keeping all them island in the U. customs territory I think that's difficult for Boris to do. it was a much Tabarrok mon managing director for the Eurasia Group in

U.K.'s senior official in charge of Brexit resigns

"Bbc radio four john humphreys nick robinson and kathy clugston who has a summary of the news the brexit secretary david davis has resigned from the government in a letter to theresa may he sent her plan for the future relationship with the eu meant it looked less and less likely that the uk would leave the customs union and the single market mr davis said the proposals agreed by the cabinet checkers on friday would make control by parliament illusory and hand power over large swathes of the economy to brussels in response the prime minister said she did not agree with his characterization the junior brexit minister steve baker has also quit jacob reese mark who leads the european research group of brexit supporting tori mp's said the resignation should force mrs may to reconsider her approach a murder inquiry has been launched in wiltshire following the death of a woman exposed to a nerve agent don starches was forty four fell ill last weekend just a few from where the former russian agents had against paul and his daughter poisoned in march her partner who was also exposed to novi chalk remains in a critical condition rescue teams are thought to have resumed their attempts to bring out the nine remaining members of a youth football team trapped in a flooded cave in thailand four were brought to safety yesterday and are said to be in good health the group have been trapped deep underground for more than two weeks officials in japan say one hundred people are known to have died after days of torrential rain caused by flooding and landslides many others are still missing two million people have been ordered to evacuate homebuilders and england may have to include electric car charging points in their designs under proposals being put forward to reduce emissions from road traffic the government is launching a consultation which will also propose that charging points are fitted to new lamp posts and at new office blocks across the uk prince louis the youngest child of the duke and duchess of cambridge is to be christened today he'll be baptized at the chapel royal at saint james's palace the time is now twenty five to seven david davis has dropped a bomb shell and the howard her boss eleven lost ninety announced he'd resigned as brexit secretary norman smith is our assistant political editor and ob so it coming normal well it's certainly taken most of westminster by surprise but reading david davis's resignation letter you slightly wondering why he didn't go sooner because he lists a long line of things he's been unhappy about clearly for some time he accuses mrs may of as he puts it progressively diluting some of the brexit objectives around giving the uk the freedom to diverge he's unhappy at the sequencing of the talks discussing the divorce arrangements before the trade deal he's unhappy at the arrangements or northern ireland he's unhappy at the handling of the brexit white paper clearly he feels that's been taken out of his control but it's checkers which seems to have crystallized all his grievances in particular this idea of signing up to the eu rulebook which he says will make supposed control by parliament illusory and he appears to be questioning whether on the current trajectory it will be possible to deliver on the referendum and on the pledges to leave the customs union and a single market and he sounds a warning that having made those sort of concessions that are contained in checkers dangers is brussels simply asks for more and he says let me just quote you hear the general direction of policy will leave us in at best a week negotiating position and possibly an inescapable one now when you put all that together you're thinking cranky how did he stay in so long i mean the view from number ten is that it is primarily a difference of tactics i would suggest it looks a lot more profound than that but the reaction of tim i think is to hope that the sort of waters close over that this is if you like a forty eight hour hiatus and then life moves on certainly there's no sign that mrs may is going to rewrite checkers their view is that reality is now kicking in jobs businesses at risk we have to move quickly in these negotiations and this package though difficult to sell can be sold so there's no sign that mrs maes going to back off from the checkers deal unless of course others pile in what is boris johnson likely to do how's he going to.

"On radio four with nick robinson and martha con it's twenty thousand nine minutes to nine and now a some reason news from charles carroll further protests are expected in gaza today is the funerals take place of some of the dozens of palestinians shot dead by israeli forces yesterday the white house accused the palestinian group hamas of a gruesome propaganda attempt as the us opened its new embassy in jerusalem israel's ambassador to the u k mark regev told us the responsive israeli troops had been measured and surgical the scottish parliament is likely to reject the uk's main piece of brexit lagarde legislation the eu withdrawal bill when it votes this afternoon the snp is accused the westminster government of trying to grab powers that should return from brussels directly to holly hollywood kensington palace says prince harry and meghan markle have appealed for understanding and respect from his markle's father following a report that he's decided not to attend their wedding on saturday was markle is understood to be concerned for her father's wellbeing and the husband of nazanin cigar ratcliffe the british uranian woman jailed in iran for spying has said that he's wife could be facing fresh charges richard ratcliffe wants the foreign foreign secretary boris johnson to raise her case when he meets his iranian counterpart today it's twenty seven minutes to nine and we return now to the vote in scotland because the scottish parliament is set to defy westminster invoked today over brexit politicians at hollywood argue that pows being returned from brussels and areas like agriculture environment should go directly to them rather than to the uk parliament this could mean an unprecedented constitutional clash david mundell is the secretary of state for scotland good morning to you good morning these are areas will the contentious areas the ones which are already devolved to scotland in agriculture for example so why not give the pows directly to hollywood the first thing is new powers and responsibilities currently exercised by distorts will change as a result of this what is changing.
