"Flight is now a reality. And yet, there are those who question the Wright brothers claim as the first in flight. Some believe German immigrant gustave Whitehead beat them to the punch. That he built his own powered flying machine and soared through the skies of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1899 in 1901, respectively. The assertion will drive orville mad for the same reason, Pulitzer Prize winning historian David McCullough later dismisses it. The problem with that whole Whitehead claim is that there's no evidence. True historians can't work and hearsay. Now, what about Brazil's Alberto Santos Dumont? Using his box kite styled flying machine, Qatar's bees, Alberto flies publicly in France in 1906. On his second such flight, he achieves a distance of 726 feet. And public is important since the secretive Wright brothers have kept their flights out of the public eye while awaiting their patent, which isn't awarded until that same year. Thus, even as octave schnitz writes from France to tell the brothers that Alberto is impressive, but behind them. I fancy that he is now very nearly where you were in 1904. The French man writes aviation loving France, mocks the Americans, questioning if they are, quote unquote, flyers or liars. But the French stop laughing when will Wright does some exhibition flights in France in 1908. Forget staying in the air for a few hundred feet. That said, some, including most Brazilians, will point to the Wright brothers initial secrecy, and use of a launching track, not wheels, to claim the Alberto, not will in orf. Was the first in flight. But perhaps the most amusing claim comes from a very serious place. The Smithsonian remember secretary Samuel Langley, he too produced a manned aircraft. The massively expensive government funded tandem winged arrow dome. It failed spectacularly, most recently just days before the Wright brothers December 17th, 1903 success. Yet, Sam's Smithsonian successor calls him the first in flight after his death. With will dead as well, or of answers this insult in 1928 by sending his and Wales original 1903 flyer to the science museum in London. Clearly passing over the venerated American museum. Yikes. The feud only starts to cool in the 1940s when the Smithsonian acknowledges Sam's machine only flew with modifications and after his death. The 1903 flyer does eventually return home to the states. And even goes to the Smithsonian, but not until after orb's death and the museum's agreement to credit the rights, not its former director, as the first in flight. Both of these things happen in 1948. It's certainly fun to look at all the first in flight claimants, and there are still others. of the day, the importance of the Wright brothers accomplishment can't be understated. "45 on WTO P. 9 45 and over to Dave Jones. I guess we do have a standing Cup final series after the avalanche be delayed in 7 nothing in game two. I thought oh, but now a lighting when last night 6 two over the avalanche and now listen to this. The way things work in hockey. Nick Paul, he was injured, right? Pauly, Pauly. So you think his night's done? No, he comes back and scores a goal. Turns out to be the winning goal in fact in the 6 two win and the tip of the helmet from his teammate Steven stamkos. Paulie's obviously a huge part of our team, so held their breath there for a little bit. You know, guys are obviously banged up, especially at this time of the year. But in true hockey player fashion, he sucks it up and comes out and scores the eventual game winner. Now was pauli as talked about by stammer. Steven stamkos goes by stammer. Battle of the bell weighs tonight. We used to make a big deal about this and we probably are going to do it again and make a big deal why not? It's June. We need something to make a big deal out of its nationals and Orioles. The oils, they are improving 30th win of the season so far in 68 games last year took them 92 games. The Yankees beat the rays four to two last night Garrett Cole and though they were going into the 8th, that's a 50th win for the Yankees. Pre draft workouts are done big event is Thursday and for wizards and manager Tommy shepherd when I'm trying to figure out how to build a team with enough depth that you can push through injuries and continue to thrive. Yeah, it's been a problem because last season Bradley Beal went down and sort of the wizards season. "Decisions aren't black and white. Think red. 5 15 now in time for Dave Johnson. Hey, no crying in baseball, no pain and hockey. Oh, there's pain just to not feel it. Especially the playoffs, lightning is 6 to one of the avalanche consider the lightning's Nick Paul. Left last night's game injured, but of course, returned to score a goal. Yeah, escort a goal as the avalanche as the lighting beat the avalanche last night and the tip of the helmet from teammate Steven stamkos. Pauly's obviously a huge part of our team, so held their breath there for a little bit. You know, guys are obviously banged up, especially this time of the year. But in true hockey player fashion, he sucks it up and comes out and scores the eventual game winner. Yeah, Pauly is Nick Paul. She had the why to the aim. That's from Steven stamkos who had a golden assist last night and boy the lightning really needed. As the avalanche still leave the series two games to one. Hey, the battle of the beltways, we still make that much of a deal about this anymore, but we used to. The Orioles and nationals. It's in Camden yards, Eric fetty starts with the Nats. The Orioles on Sunday over Tampa Bay, there are 30th of the season in 68 games last year, it took him 92 games to get to 30 wins. And the Yankees meet the raised last night, that's their 50th win of the season for the Yankees. Wizards, not revealing who they will draft on Thursday in the NBA draft, but a rumor tells me the best player available is still an option. Dave Johnson, the Ethiopia sports. "Of what the bruins would like to be. Good at drafting. Good at drafting. You look Braden point. Ross Colton, Anthony cirelli, Andre pilat. None of those guys are, you know, first round picks. And there's more. There's more on that roster. You can look at the third and fourth lines. You look all over the roster. And again, like vasilevsky was a first round pick, but still, I mean, you look at the roster and you go, that's a team that drafted well. Yeah, no, it's that. And even if we want to talk about Colorado, of course, you can look at the avalanche and be like, well yeah, you just got to draft a generational center and a generational defenseman. You get to go. It helps quite a bit. You want to become a car. Like, oh yeah, I could see why a lot of teams like that guy. But I think you look at, as you said, Tampa and the way they've drafted and the way that they can, again, relinquish those first round picks to put themselves over the top. I mean, how many times have we seen it, whether it's Blake Coleman, whether it's Barclay goudreau, Nick Paul, Brendan Hegel, all these guys that you can sacrifice that first run talent because you've got the scouting department in the organization in place that you can identify talent in the second, third, fourth round. Not to say that every time you're going to draft a brayden point or an akita kourov, but even you look at gallic Ross Colton who I think was a fourth round pick. That's a guy that's Vermont. Yes, that's a guy that scored. I think it was what the game winning goal, a series clinching goal, I think, against Montreal. I want to say, that was a bruins player. It was like didn't hind and people would be celebrating didn't hide in the streets. It never have to buy a drink. Over at the hop. But again, it's one of those things where they just identify talent all across the board. And when you've got a strong scouting department in an established organization, you can give up those first round picks to get you that town that puts you in a position to get you over the top over a playoff series. I mean, even look at Colorado, the fact that, you know, you look at Joe sagging what he's done there, whether it's trading for a gala devonte, who was in kind of a cap issue there with the islanders taking advantage of that..

"I think that was about as thorough of a destruction as you're going to see, especially this late in the postseason on this setting and the Stanley Cup final stage against this quality of opponent, which is a team looking to three beat. And I think you mentioned earlier that you had the odd man rush chances at even strength the road where it's nothing for the abs. I had 5 on 5 rush shots at 15 to two for the ads last night. Yeah. And those two for the lightning were a bit generous because one was kind of like a Nick Paul and where he was coming from a relatively tough angle. And the other one was a brayden point attempted that it didn't even make it on that because born by our kind of just harmlessly knocked her away. But they just weren't like we can talk a lot about what the abs data offensively and how they scored 7 goals and all the talent we saw on display. But defensively, it was about as dominant a performance as you're going to see because they just didn't allow anything all night. In 45 one 5 minutes, natural stature had the lightning down for 6 shots on goal, one high danger chance, and 0.35 expected goals as a team. And that even might be generous because it feels like Kemper was a test at all night, so they just regardless of how many goals the abs scored. It felt like their defensively, they were so swarming and they were giving them so little space. And they had the puck on their stick with such a long period of time. The lightning, I think that's almost as big of a concern moving forward in this series. It's like, how do we sustainably find ways to create offense? I know they scored three goals in game one. But it really feels like it's going to be a struggle for them to score any goals. No, absolutely. During the last series, we saw Tampa had the advantage in shot attempts, but when it was quality chances like the rangers still had the edge in the first two games and they were generating more cycle chances and more shots off the rush, which was like a little bit unexpected for the rangers, which that had been a season wide problem for them. And then in round one, it was a disaster. So it built on round two and were able to push back against stamp on those first two games, and then the script completely flipped. And Tampa Bay had more rush chances and they had the results to show for it. They had more cycle chances and they had the results to show for them. And if you're going to get past one of the best goalies in the world, which they are facing at the time in chess durkin, you're going to have to test them a lot. You could look at it and say, maybe they could lull him to sleep. And the couple chances they get will trickle through, but in reality we know the more sustainable way to.

"This is the first time the lighting of lost back to back games in the playoffs since 2019 and really a theme right now through the first two games of the series it's been puck management It hasn't been good for the lightning The rangers certainly have had a hand in that as to why the lightning have struggled in that department But the lighting certainly aren't helping themselves either The team finished game two with 22 giveaways That's too many and the rangers to their credit have made them pay Now Steven stamkos said after the game they just aren't executing properly You know we're focused on our group and what we have to do and I just think we have an executed the way the proper way that has got us here especially the last couple of years in terms of puck management and execution and stuff like that We've talked about you know the amount of skill that they have on their team if you give them chances they're very skilled team and they can make you pay You know I think we went back to the basics a little bit there in the third besides the goal that we gave up and found some momentum there at the end so They did find some momentum and we're going to get into that in just a couple of minutes here but Victor Edmond also said look we know we have to be better in game three in front of our home fans We've got to be better and realize when it's dangerous on and get back to even instead of trying to make that extra place So yeah it's on us a little bit Obviously the most but give them credit too Now we did see some pushback from the lightning in game two as I just said over the final 25 minutes 38 seconds of game two The lighting out shot the rangers 21 to 6 And they started to play like the team we've seen for the majority of these playoffs Corey Perry said they need to carry over what they did towards the end of game two into game three this afternoon Urgency You take that third period you remember it you bring it and that's the way we have to start a game is the way we played in that third and we got a little bit of momentum We see what works and what doesn't You have to remember that going home I mean you got to win your games at home and they did that and we got to go home and go home and win two That's what the lighting are focusing on doing You got to win one This afternoon to make that possible but they understand the situation they are in and Nick Paul said look what we did in that third period We certainly have to bring it today and there were some good things we did We were just getting momentum off each other and playing the right way Putting a deep winning those battles and then once we got those battles we started moving our feet making plays getting pucks to the net And then from there pop battles in front kicking it out It goes to the corner being first on park so I think just their urgency to win those battles and keep our feet moving in the ozone really turn the table at the end and obviously not the result we want It's not the result They wanted but maybe they got some confidence from the end of game two We shall see coming up in about 20 minutes Hey for every lighting home go mosaic once again do an 8 $500 the feeding Tampa Bay and its local food bank partners That equals 5000 meals per goal and for every lighting hatcher can help mosaic want to donate $5000 Thank you for helping In the fight against hunger All right we're going to bring in our good friend.

"5 on 5 play 'cause I looked this number up yesterday The top four players in shot attempts at 5 on 5 for the Panthers Our Brandon montour Gustav Forza Claude Giroux no surprise and Sam Bennett no surprise Not Alexander barkov not Jonathan Hubert not Carter for hagi not Anthony duclair These are all I mean Reinhardt was an 80 goal scorer Hubert O had like a 110 points Barkov we know barkov They've done a tremendous job to this point of not giving those guys space And I think that's a big key to why they're up right now to nothing in the series Even though Florida had more possession time in game two it's just how you defend them and don't give them great 8 chances I think the line of the great job of that so far That's the thought process You know what If you're going to win you're going to have to do it with somebody else other than your big guns And if you start limiting your big guns to opportunities you know now the other teams have to step up because let's face it Everybody you know we rely on cooch who rely on stammer and Victor and you know and frighten point We rely on those guys because we know that they can come through for its most time You know probably 95% of the time But the thing is what has made us a better team over the last three years as far as winning equipment is that we're getting the same amount of production from our third and fourth units And that's the key Yeah we know that they can do it but I got to make sure that I do it to because they're going to focus on those guys and that's why the other when they kid yapping about secondary scoring and how tough you got to have that to win That's why because you've heard me say this a hundred times He Jules trombone they're all Montreal Canadian great room one I think 8 or 9 cups with the Canadians And he always told me he says chief he says it's not your stars that really actually win the games for you because the stars from each team kind of castle one another out He called him diplomas He heard it It's the plumbers that we need to gain the third and fourth lines but they outplay the other team's third and fourth line Then you got a great chance to win And who is leading Tampa Bay and scoring right now in the postseason Ross Colton Yeah Ross Colton leads this scene in scoring with 5 goals right now I think Corey Perry is second with four Right So it's not it's not Sam crows It's not crucial Obviously point hasn't played the last few games You know Nick Paul had some huge contributions obviously in game 7 against Toronto So yeah you are getting some of those from the light is depth players for sure And I think that's a big key again why they you know now they want four in a row coming out of the series against Toronto one of the first two games here And hopefully we'll see what happens this afternoon but we'll see if they can get up three north of the series All right we're going to take a break You are listening to the pre game skate show here on news radio WFLA and lining power play on the iHeart app I'm Eric Rowan so he's bottomed the chief Taylor We're gonna touch on the injury updates and what we might see in warmup when we talk about that right after this Hey it's Seth Kushner host of the block party We head on an excellent guess this week The lightning are too busy for my nonsense right now Being focused on the playoffs So I had on One of their big fans raised picture Tyler glass now I talked to Tyler about the most autographs he signed at one time I think it's 7500 about wander Franco's greatness who his favorite player on the lightning is and give a prediction on the series from Tyler That's the.

"The Carolina hurricanes scored two power play goals and got twenty seven season goalie Fredrik Andersen in route to a three two win over the Tampa Bay Lightning marketing they just opened the scoring in the second period with a power play goal for Carolina before newly acquired forward Nick Paul would tie the game at one for Tampa Bay Carolina would retake the lead after Tony deangelo point shot was redirected in front Sebastian I hope maybe three one for Caroline in the third temple will get a late goal by Alex killorn to cut the deficit in half but table could not find the equalizer DeAngelis said the power play was the key among those chances in last fifteen sixteen power plays is that one and so we have plenty of examples those needed when when they did thank those good I'm very fast Leschi made thirty eight saves for Tampa Bay Dennis **** Raleigh North Carolina

"That there there might be an occasion here to to throw the book at the guy that they won't is is i guess protecting the refs and i get that right. I get that you can't undermine them all the time you don't want to give him this habit of video being sent in every second game and these guys going against what the call was right. It's just not gonna. It's not realistic. I gonna protect the referee. They're gonna they're gonna side on the on you know on the refs towards refs so but this one holy man you know. I don't know what happened. Did he get he. Did he get he didn't get a penalty. Did not even a two minute minor for boarding or anything like that and to your point about making a challengeable. i mean. that's if you're ever going to challenge anything. Something that calls into question player safety were a guy could have got badly maimed. That's that's where you should have challenges. Not on offsides in where guys at millimeter offside fifteen minutes before a goal ends up later being scored has nothing to do with anything. It def- it defies logic to me. It certainly lends some credibility to the thought. A lot of fans have that there are different rules for different players. It's nick paul hitting the superstar. Alex skin you can be damned sure that we're getting a call there so that's one angle. I would like to see a couple of things here. And i'd like to see referees. Be made available to the media at the very least a press. Release after the fact i wanna know. I'm really curious to know how any referee could look at that. And there wasn't anything between him and the hit he's looking right at it. He's ten feet away and he basically said to himself. Yeah that's good. Hit play on boys. I mean come on a need. I need an explanation. Anita i need you to convince me that you belong in the nhl if you think that is cool. That's totally fine with you because there's two things that referee needs to do in the game and that's keep the game fair but way more importantly player safety and that referee failed badly on both counts. Yeah so what do you do right. You have you have to overturn. You've got interrupt you've got you've got a review and look at this thing and gone okay. The guy missed it okay. So here's what's going to happen. We got we got a suspended for two games. Three games or something something they gotta do. Your right gets complicated. wanna superstar. They they get a lot. You get a lot wider berth than anybody else.

"Setting really good goaltender ottawa. We risk dating this podcast because when it out the deal may have already been done. Can't talk about audubon. Without talked about brady ca chuck. Did you watch our exhibition game on saturday night. I did elliott. I again with open collar very controversial. Well you know what I just like everybody to see like the sweater. I wear underneath the shirt. So did you hear my take on on cacak. Yes so essentially. We've wrong your take on. This is towards the end of the game to you said. Look second emission remission. He said something along the lines of look. If he's not gonna do the long term deal bet on your team right now in the next three years. You have a lot of good young players. Take your shot now while he's agreeing to that three years. That's what i would do. I see people saying oh well if you only give them three years one year walk to usa you know to me. That's loser thinking that. Is you just saying that. We can't make this work no matter what the key thing is here one. He likes playing there too. He's with guys. He knows he likes playing with josh. Norris drag bathurst. Tim stewart slow. Alex berenson all these guys up front chabad on the blue line. He likes it when he was drafted. He i don't think he thought he was going to like it. He likes it. Don't screw with that. You have to say if you're ottawa. We've got a good young team and we've got good young players and we have to bet that he's gonna wanna stay with this and if you can't get a budget because i think this i think they need a great start there's always uncertainty. There's questions about the size of the ticket base. Get him in there and get off to a great start. Get them done by wednesday so he can play by thursday. That's what i would do if i was auto. I'd say fine three years. Let's go if you're not gonna bend. We need you hear the call in white injury. Hurt ya but there have been some positive signs coming at a training camp most notably shane pinto. Who i think has turned a lot of heads. Very good. I should've mentioned him too. I think they're i wonder if they're going to go out and get a center. I don't think it would surprise anybody. It makes too much sense. There's a couple of things about ottawa for me. One listen that that top line if they can get pretty good chuck back in the mix here soon with northbound thurston and get checked. That's real good stood continues to look better and better and every time you see them. You see even even saw glimpses on saturday freed game that you were working with with david and jennifer like every now and then. It's like okay. There's tim's law. This guy is going to be fantastic. Alex form straight line fast. Like just blazing speed nick. Paul says a hard worker conner brown still one of my favorite players and the you like connor brown a lot too. There's a lot of reasons. Ottawa i keep coming back though. Too big question marks in net and. I don't love the defense yet. I think one day this defense is going to be good. It's just not going to be anytime soon. I guess not this season that ottawa's can have good blue line. How do you see the sense. I'm with you on murray and the feeling on that he looks better like physically. He looks better. he's bigger it looks stronger and bigger. I've always been jealous of him. Because he's a really skinny guy. And i haven't been skinny and thirty three years. So you're jealous of matt murray twenty-seven-year-old nhl netminder who. When he's skinny goaltender played junior hockey member used to say he would turn sideways and vanish but he looks bigger. He looked stronger. I like that a lot of the other things too is yet. I agree with you on the d. But like i said every teams flawed. And they're kind of starting over like we're taping this on sunday night the to me and adam brooks waiver claim here makes a lot of sense. Dj smith yup maple leafs association the tampa bay lightning the defending stanley cup champions. Who have had you know. Part of their arsenal depleted Most notably the entire third line. There we made and for good reason a lot about but this is still a team That has brayden point. that has kucherov. That has sally and stamkos and headman and surrogate chevy and mcdonough and the big one andrei vasilevskiy. So where do you think they feel like. They should finish in the regular season this year. I don't think they care at all. They don't give a flying you-know-what at a rolling doughnut regular season. They'll get themselves ready. They'll they'll make sure they're in a good spot. Don't care just get in. And then just say we'll deal with this. But i do think you're right and that line was funny. I was talking to glenn. Healy on on saturday night. And he's tap is gonna win again. I said there they lost that line. He's like glenn. Nothing and i'm like wine. They've got some nasty guys there. You know the the bell mars in the and the perry's room. Those guys are maroon. But they're a little bit older. I don't know how much you're putting a lot of those guys in second line minutes which is basically what the gorge goodra coleman line wise. So that's the one thing. Like how do they deal with that all year. And that's a huge hannity. How do they reinsert that. That's my only question about this team. The only one. I have. And i think that barbara is getting claimed. That's a tough player to put on. Waivers he's not getting syracuse. No against syracuse. I'll tell you what we're gonna see a lot more of this year. We're going to see a lot more. Ross colton and from what we saw last year. That's a good thing as good player. And you're gonna see a lot of ross colton beside corey. Perry and. I don't think he's going to replicate that word line but trying to put together a third line that that does some of the things at that line did. I don't know man. Ross colton corey perry together. That's a pretty good start isn't it. I it's fantastic..

"Was definitely a great feeling by the deandre. Wants to come out with win. I thought also you had an ax. Oppostion everybody really wants to get the gold. And i think play really well in the last couple minutes. Yeah penalty of mine and Yeah whilst like Which is pretty high in the end. I just want to talk to get the puck to the net. And i think i had a pretty good and i'll see hit pretty good an absolute beauty and it's always nice when you're first goal is a special one like that special player as well. And that's tim stood slip in. I guess. Some of his teammates are calling him jimmy stew. For some reason. I could get some background on that He he's right now. You can tell the first two games. He's a kid out there. I mean he hasn't had any camp time exhibition games. So he's going right. Basically from world juniors into the nhl. What a leap. that is. And he didn't look at a place even thrive but he didn't look at place he's right now he's measuring out what works and what doesn't and Junior and pro hockey in germany. Absolutely every everything worked so not worried about him the stage and some some good things. No there's some negatives But you don't dwell on though. Is this early in the season. Particularly in the sense circumstances. Matt murray look very very good. he already like i. It's been a while. let's say this. It's been a while. Since i was as comfortable with the sends goalie as i was watching matt. Murray over the weekend. So that's a great start for him. It's early but Toronto dominated in puck possession and shot attempts all weekend and matt murray was square. The pocket seemed all the time. Look really comfortable out there nick. Paul meanwhile love that story. Missa god's been in the organization for a long time. He's been sent to the minors by auto a fourteen different times and placed on waivers of bunches. Well and then finally something. Click for paul last season and he started looking like hey i believe i belong here so he got a goal in the saturday game and he was all over the ice goodspeed. None of d. j. smith is buying into him yet. He gave them just over twelve minutes of ice time in the saturday night loss. So i'd like to see that. I mean just as an observer. I'd like to see nick. Paul get rewarded because the whole concept seems to be best players play and he was in the discussion for best ford period and so some good things to take away from the opening weekend. Got to be patient. It's going to be inconsistent so a nice opening weekend sends. We'll be back at it as the winnipeg jets visits this week on tuesday and thursday. Okay so you're already falling into the trap. Stevie okay of not enough games under their belt before we make the assessment on t. Okay great opener for the sends. Okay not a bad game right. Second game pretty good stood slow there with the big goal so lots of good things happening but general regular season stevie okay. Eighty plus games eighty two or four game. Steve what is i always get it wrong. It was eighty two is very briefly. Eighty four but it's it's generally eighty two okay so some fairness to me. That's why i get it wrong. So so eighty. Two game skid. We've always agreed seat when we did. The radio show for years no assessment here until their past fifteen games. Okay.
