Xavien howard misses a couple games. Nick needham seems to always be there. Any in any situation needed really. He'll he'll kind of lineup everywhere at not get really torched. Which is i. Guess kind of the saving grace. They're what you really want out of your quarterbacks. Josh did that tone about the miami. Dolphins secondary could kind of seep into the rest of the unit. Here because that's may lead to miami's success upfront. In terms of just tell me a little bit how this front seven can operate. You mentioned you know. We have jobs here as a third straight defensive end third-string linebacker. How is this unit. Gotta find success. I mean i it's just going to be continuous. Looks shaken just those multiple fronts in the big thing that i saw. Jake is a video from brett coleman. I'm dicky's a youtube guy breakdown film better than anyone. That despite the dab in monitoring seven how bill and how this team is simply constructed the secondary is what's going to be vital against the run for the miami dolphins defense this year. That can drop down the box and do those things. You have here brennan jones again. This was a guy who didn't really hear a lot about this off season. But maybe that's a good thing played almost forty percent snaps last season. We saw him be that a safe. Take a drop down there and be almost like a line bag can fill in those holes. I mean he had a lot of opportunities there in the preseason to at least give us something ed i don't think we if you beat out. It was awesome if he doesn't beat out Bedroom justin cullen. But it'd be nice to kind of see him flash there. In having a couple of big moments. You're right be kinda wanna see little more at you. Gotta wonder where he's gonna see that opportunity. He's listed as a boundary quarterback behind byron jones. I justin coleman nikki user guys who i think we're gonna see often really brings up the question if you're not saying former first rounder in his second year You start to get concerned. I guess the big question. And that's you know that's where we're joined with here because we're sitting here talking about how he maybe should be able to be just maybe should be able to be on nickname but you draft him in the first round. You know. this is the second year you want to see your first round draft pick. Go out there and be able to plant some of those guys. So i do think it's a little bit concerning but we go back to the michael jeter thing like we just talked about this a twenty one year. Old cornerback has all. The physical tools is with. Josh boyer is with brian floors. If there's any coaching staff that can turn this guy into a superstar. It's dolphins but at this point you gotta feel a little bit concerned for. His development moved for little concern about his the for sure. But josh at the same time i mean maybe there's too many cooks in the kitchen. I mean josh. Nick need of his looking so much better that he did a year ago. He had a seventy nine pro. Football focus grade in week one. I'm more than twenty coverage snaps. I he had pass breakups on slants twice an eight-year slot receiver. You're going over the middle one of the hardest jobs in football. He seems to be pretty solid. Especially as an undrafted guy. It's it's been kind of great to see developed. He played five snaps the slot week to at any hopped outside with byron jones. Exhibit howard. bus. The game josh. What have you seen data Because he's someone who's going to get the ball thrown out of right. You have byron. Jones yet exhibiting howard. He's someone who's going to the ball thrown his way quarterback test their lack. Ed he seems to be the one. Who's making more than the quarterback man. I think you could argue. You know plan nickel quarterly. Nfl might be the hardest position play. 'cause you're pretty much on the island against noah tight end against some of those speedy receivers. So you can go anywhere nick. Needham i mean this is a guy van favorite. We know the story. You know undrafted worked his way his ass off basically but i mean he just looks like a different player. Jackie don't know if it's because he was getting ready because exerting howard told out you just don't know if it's because again they had what fourteen fifteen sixteen. Db's at one time. I mean this is the group that you did kind of see the cream rise to the top you did see a nickname start to stand out above the rest and and that's just what you wanna see. I don't care if it's him. I don't care if it's i really don't care if it's no eggnog. Any i know you know as hard as that is to say as long as you're going out there and you got your best players out there i mean. Is there a better. May i'm going to say. Is there a better tandem in the nfl than byron jones. Exuding howard nick needham. I mean that's a pretty damn good trio of corners and It's just a testament to how well nickname has developed this season despite playing much in the is going to be a battery receiver. At least it seems like that. Early on being listed behind. Fired jones exhibited howard. Josh i do have to say. Justin coleman is listed starting slot corner with freshly signed elisa campbell behind him cohen. Kind of seemed like one of those guys who you could kinda just plugging play. You do be fit right away. He seems like a perfectly. Chris bosh type player. Where if he's your best cornerback. I don't really know how are you're gonna get but as your number three having. He could take advantage of every opportunity that comes his way. But just we know we. Just these rosters these charts. They changed so often who plays more snaps snacks. This season justin comment or nydia victim. I think it's got to be nicknamed him. I think again you know what he did in preseason and the nichols spot and again i think you know. This is just reindeer games with the dolphins Sense i mean anybody that looks at depth. Chart gets mad because jay phillips third down the list or a rea- someone else's listed above another person. "But josh there is obviously a a little bit of room for improvement especially when you look at that bills game and how everything kind of Fell apart the one interesting. No i have about the second air here when you look at the oldest guys being byron jones and eric rowe at twenty eight before bring according to his twenty three. There's a really unique gap in terms of the miami. Dolphins secondary You have someone like Exhibit howard is twenty seven and the next closest guy to in howard. If we're talking about younger players is brandon jones at twenty three. There's nobody from. Twenty six to twenty eight in the dolphins secondary. And and i think the where do you see every kind of fitting in i. Do you see any been of concern that. There's a little bit of a gap between the older guys who know what they're doing. These rookies for trip. Still trying to figure out the issue. I had last year. I mean he was behind to absolute stuns at cornerback and he wasn't going to get any chance on the field unless one of them got her. He saw that plane time to vote. He got some plays at benico. Cornerback but i mean for us to sit here and justify eggnog. Knee is a first round. Pick and you know some people strings enough have already calling a bus but for a first round pick trajectory. I mean first year second year. You see that massive jump. Does he make a push for boundary spot. Is he making a push with coleman With like nick needham. Four that cornerbacks job. Yeah and i think. That's what brian floors jailed. Alexandra been touched on wednesday. He was working more inside. You know now they learned the preliminary starting to some of that stuff on inside at nickel. You know run support and things like that so You know. I hope to see eggnog. Any kind of take that next step and try to forge his role at nickel corner. Because that would be awesome to see. And then even have that versatility to play on the perimeter But jake tear to your point you know. Do i believe there's a huge drop off between exciting howard and byron jones. Those young guys absolutely and we saw front and center in that buffalo game early on we saw you know stefan continue talking about that cross or you know we see how the defense looks when those guys are out of the lineup. And it's just not a good feeling and it makes you wonder why fans would even want to entertain an idea to train exhibit howard when you think about it you know. Then you're throwing no egg menagian there then you don't have anyone else. You don't have security blanket. So i definitely think there's concern there but i also think it goes back to what the coach said you know. Last year even byron jones took some time to get this system down. He's in there taking notes. He's trying to get better. I think those younger guys are seeing that. And i think you know. Maybe it's a good thing that got those two elite corners and i say elite because up until last year byron jones name was up there maybe obvious the consistency but he was when he was good. He was good. He was aiming howard again. I don't think would at ten receptions if it wasn't for him but you know maybe it's just me i'm giddy thinking about it because i think we just tapped into something here. You know the dolphins at two of the best corners in the nfl. And i think that they can sit here and take some these younger guys under their wing and get the best out of them. I mean that's pretty cool to see. So i don't know what's gonna ultimately happened here but i think you know. Exerting howard byron jones and then if you can get no eggnog in there that to me is one hell of a starting three and then you know you just figure out the rest of that and again. I'm not. i'm not too sure. The dolphins don't think they can plug and play at all these different positions because we've seen it in the past Bobby mccain the one guy who is returning in the secondary. He played ninety eight percent or more of snaps in nine games for the miami dolphins defense last year Over fifty percent every game. He played hundred percent of snaps and six straight games. I mean the dude was was the definition of a workhorse for the miami dolphins and then you have someone like brennan jones up. I've been one to kinda talk. Highly of him this year. about his growth. I thought he had a pretty solid rookie season. But but i saw an interesting trend where he started a he played in fifty percent of snaps in five or more games but he really dropped off near the end of the season. Twenty five percent week sixteen And twenty percent in week seventeen there were just other safeties. Getting more steps than him But when you look at this group. Josh i remember thinking pre-draft what would it be crazy. Pick for the miami dolphins to take early because you know the projections we we create. They're not always going to be one hundred percent. Things are going to have to be expected. I thought safety would be one of those picks. So i guess this whole kind of exercise here has been me working up to the question you know. Spend a third round pick on british jones. Who again was decent simple. We saw him kind of Moose's role a bit near the end of the year. I don't know if that's just kind of Based on the different personnel on the opposing side line. Or what but you have him as a third round pick of ink monogamy as the first round pick and you have holland. Here's early second round pick. I mean there's with that much capital spent in the secondary. This team has to really push the guys again. Like i said. I don't think byron jones and sabin howard are going to boozer starting jobs. I looked to see them. Start sixteen games but in order for these high top tier picks to really justify their value. I mean these guys have to be on the field. And i don't know if i necessarily see defense where all these guys are really being. Impact players with with air grow and exhibiting howard in byron jones being at a different level than than this group. A younger guys. Yeah that's a good point. I mean you can sure code all you want but let's go to what your timelines cetera with a little rundown says and you straight up you and for we're talking about this before the draft. He mentioned safety. You mentioned tight end. So you know both you because those were positions at the dolphin fan base and you know many outsiders thought were pretty much set but jake goes back to the nfl and as cliche as it sounds. It's just moving to that. Pass i league know you say here. You've got byron jones with the big contract you got examine. How are the big contract at some point. You're going to have to get rid of one of those guys and you're going to have to try to pay some your own so i don't know that we're going to have the luxury of having these two elite corners like we do right now but i'm interested to see the way it all shapes up because again if no aid monogamy can even become half the corner that the dolphins thought he was when they drafted him. You know they'll be in pretty damn good shape and it won't be so bad lose guys like a mccain or one of those other guys enter ramp up this conversation here about the secondary i wrote a story on this for the finsider and it actually some pretty good numbers. I'm not doubting it. But i just think it's a really interesting transition. Obviously teams changing evolve every year and the miami dolphins secondary despite bringing back know for the five quote unquote. Starters is going to be no different than that. But i mean i don't know if i'm you know settling i don't know if that's right word but if i have a safety who who's pretty damn good outside of basing you know the top three four tight ends in the league. that is that is that wrong. No man and you mentioned a quote. And i think we have to be excited because i remember that philly game and at that point. I remember zach. Ertz was one of those premier tight ends. Let's be honest. Air grope erased him you know. He matched up well with him. And if your only loss is going to be against the travis kelsey at darren waller and george kittle like you said that's pretty damn good but the quote here is You know they asked him what he learned from. Those matchups getting beat pretty badly to titans he said. Obviously those are two of the best tight ends in the league along with kittle. Kinda what i learned is i got to step my game up with them. They're not really tight. Ends their big wide receivers. That can run. I know we have lost vegas week. Three i'm ready for that so You know again. It just seems different. If brian flores decided to go a different direction based on his track record as a head coach at this point. Yeah i mean when you break it down like that. I guess again it goes back to you know the trades and just every little move that brian floors and the dolphins making expect the unexpected. But if told me no would you know maybe have a better year are that to me. I would say a little bit crazy but again who knows. They're put in the work and you byron does he. He struggled last year so to think. In my opinion i think he might even better this year. So i think it'd be a little crazy but again it's bryant floors so he'll go out there with ibanez rga knee and you john holland as starting corners on. They own week one. No no what the hell's going on. I don't think anyone questioned that. I mean when you think about it josh. I don't think anybody expects xavien howard to have ten interceptions next year and you can listen to any episode of radio. Where i'm one of the hosts i have never been a fan of trading xavien howard. I think that's silly thing. I think that's kind of trying to do too much. It's like i. it's again gos- season you're gonna spend all this time. What trades can the dolphins to that smart obviously has trade batteries higher than it will ever be. But i just kind of meat. Maybe a no igwe doggy steps up and becomes a guy. Maybe jason mccourty become more consistent. I'm not saying that's likely but i'm just saying Players get better and worse every year. I breaking news. I know that's completely mind blowing. And who knows. Maybe we'll take that next step. Maybe nick needham Is is pushing to not only be a corner slot quarter but to really develop but to go back to safety accepting. That's the big question begins. eric rowe was asked about playing with jason mccourty who they played together. New england. And there are some whispers. That mccartney could be used at both safety. And cornerback which. It's kind of like eric rowe when he made that transition. Mccorvey is a little older and josh. I want to ask you because you think about someone. Like no benign twenty one years old how it is going to be rookie. Brennan jones's the second year die. And then you have guys like byron jonesing sabian howard who are top tier quarterbacks again. I'm not saying these guys aren't going to be studs i've term. We think they are but nothing. Can i certain. Nfl where does according fitness because the dolphins have their young guys that they're hoping to see grow and they had that you know quote unquote leadership and guys like Byron jones baron jones has been one of the best leaders since he showed up very well spoken. He has no problem being that guy in the middle of the quarterback to help out everyone right. That's the vibe. I've gotten from him. So where does according fit on the depth chart because you also think. Justin coleman another veteran they bought. And there's a lotta competition going on in this group despite being one of the better secondaries in the league last year. Yeah i mean. It's so hard to see her and thinking how mcchord will fit into things. And you mentioned justin coleman. I'm so glad you did. Because i actually wrote down his name here because i didn't want to miss the chance to bring him up because he has familiarity he yes he plays very well at nickel you know and again. He's a veteran. Who has had success in this league. So you know. We're sitting here and we're talking nicknamed him up maybe at nickel and they're gonna use holland a little bit there. Perhaps who's to say. Justin coleman just take that job so i can't sit here. It's so hard to say here. Just figure out the dolphins. You know lebron's florist defense and trying to figure out where these pieces are going to match up to try to figure out this damn secondary when he's going to go out there and probably pick up three or four quarterbacks before the end of the month i mean it's so hard to sit here and try to figure it out but i think they saw guys like jason mccourty who has experience again with brian floors and is again veteran leader. That you know you've got rid of some of those guys got rid of by. Can you bring him. According know he still has some of that veteran leadership that you might be missing there with mccain. So i don't know if he's going to come in here and start affiliate play safety. But i think brian flores feels pretty damn good about the the groupie has again. A lot of those guys are versatile pieces who had experience in the system. i'm teams completed. Sixty three percent of passes against the miami dolphins defense last year. That's the league's best. mark know. Obviously that includes linebackers covering a running backs and things of that nature. But but i thought that was a good point to start here when talking about the dolphins secondary and they allowed one point three passing touchdowns a game. Oh i think what the dolphins did really well last year is create those pressures sax.
