"Still questionable. He's missed a ton of action lately. You've got questionable in Denzel perryman, Carl nassib, Trayvon Mullen, not great situations on either side here, but I mean, huge line movement in favor of the Raiders because of the fact that Baker Mayfield's not going to play, came out earlier today that case Keenum has also tested positive for COVID. So the backup quarterback for the browns not going to play. Right now, what is looking like Nick Mullins is going to be the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. And it's interesting because there are a couple of schools of thought on this. One, I mean, case Keenum did help deliver a win. It was a low scoring game against the Broncos, but he did help deliver a win for the browns earlier this season on Thursday football. With that said, Mullins has been admirable at times as a backup quarterback during his time in San Francisco. And you kind of start to debate, you know, Keenum Mullins is a really a big drop off there. But to me, the larger question is there that big of a drop off between Baker Mayfield and either of these guys or is the more than 7 points of line movement associated with all this stuff. An overreaction. And I think in the quarterback side of things that it definitely isn't overreaction. I had a Baker Mayfield just hasn't been that good this season. He looked good for part of the game last week against the ravens, which, by the way, if you bet the browns, I mean, RIP, that back door was unbelievably unfortunate. They were dominating the ravens. Lamar Jackson is knocked out injured. And all of a sudden, the browns offense ground to a halt. Tyler Huntley leads a multi possession backdoor situation for the ravens. I mean, thoughts and prayers if you had the Cleveland Browns last week against the spread and you laid those points, but I think the larger point is Baker Mayfield even in that game when he did play well for the most part, he didn't play four full core is a good football. He just didn't. And Nick Mullins isn't going to blow the doors off of anybody, but I don't think he's going to be demonstrably worse than Baker Mayfield's been for much of this season. The concerns, of course, for the browns do go beyond Baker Mayfield to this game. You've got some offensive line troubles. You got Austin hooper, Jarvis Landry on the COVID list as well. So it is certainly not isolated to Baker Mayfield in case Keenum here. But I still think that this much line movement might be a bit of an overreaction against the Raiders team, by the way, one in 5 both straight up and against the spread over the last 6 games. And you look at their defense over the last three games, allowing 6 yards of play on defense tied for last in the NFL over that time frame to Green Bay Packers the other team allowing 6 yards of play defensively over the last three weeks. We have to remember, the packers have actually been winning football games unlike the Las Vegas Raiders. I would be in the browns here as a slight underdog. You know, it might sound a little crazy with all the COVID stuff going on. I don't think I feel strongly enough to bet anything right now in the NFL with all the COVID situations. There are calls from the players union to delay the season by a week. I mean, who knows where we're gonna end up? I could be posting table tennis previews on ATS. I own next week for all I know with the way things are going, both in the NFL and the NBA pertaining to COVID-19 college basketball as well. But I would lean slightly toward the Cleveland Browns here. Listen, the Raiders have not done enough lately to prove to me that they can win as a slight favorite, especially on the road even with all the COVID stuff. My guy boat down here this game unbeatable as far as I'm concerned. I do not disagree with that take. One bit. So let's move on here. Saturday football, one more Saturday game. To look forward to and it is going to be again another good one. They really nailed it with the Saturday schedule, even with the browns COVID situation. We're talking patriots and cults up next up here on the GBI show. Patriots two and a half point dogs on the road total of 46 patriots coming off the bay, colts coming off the bay as well. So we're going to see two well rested teams. Of course, the last time we saw the Patriots was that memorable three pass attempt game for Mac Jones, they won in the high winds in Orchard park against the bill's kudos to them for doing that huge for the AFC east race. And of course, the colts, their last time out, well, I mean, they've been playing pretty well in their own right, but here's what I think of this game. I think that you have a situation where both of these teams playing well defensively. I love the colts running game right now. I think that is the deciding factor in this contest. I both of these teams allowing under 5 yards of play there last three games. Both in the top 5 in the NFL in that regard. I think the difference in this game is the fact you can rely on the colts running game more than you can any other unit, right? Patriots defense gonna try and make the colts play a lot of predictable third and long situations where Carson Wentz is going to have to air it out. But this is not a colts team that has to throw the ball deep in order to be successful. Bill Belichick at his best when he's taking away receiving options from the opposing team. This is a colts team that doesn't prioritize it's receiving options one bit. I think that is significant here. I also think significant is the fact that Carson Wentz just hasn't been turning the ball over this season. Now you look at Carson Wentz, he's done 5 interceptions. He's been really good at not ruining games for the colts, the way that he did for the eagles during much of his career. And it sounds silly, right? Because Carson Wentz and turnovers, it's like those inkblot tests that a psychiatrist will give you. I mean, I have no personal experience with them, but you know if you ever seen a movie where somebody's at a psychiatrist, just looking at the ink block test, if I saw the word turnovers in the ink blots, I would say Carson Wentz or vice versa. That hasn't been the case this year, Carson Wentz has done a really nice job of not turning the football over. And I think that is going to be again significant against a team in the Patriots that really praise on quarterbacks who turn the ball over as long as he does not revert to the old Carson Wentz.

I think they're the third best team in the division. The washington football team. We'll specially with heineke quarterback. Yeah i think that's true. But i think that was the case before but whatever i don't want to you know i think i think he's i think he's worse than ryan fitzpatrick. I think there's enough evidence to say. That in the xfl is a backup. I think there's enough. You're not getting giving ryan fitzpatrick enough credit. If you say that like tiller honey is definitely better than or not even any bit of a drop off overall in the baseline sure. You can argue that. But i think the highest if you looking at the highs of the highest i think you have to factor that in Yes so another loss for washington probably coming up this week. They feel comfortable with and the most important thing at that point was to get into field goal range and to drain the clock and they accomplished both of those things. And so. it's fine needle to thread through whatever. Haystack analogy i mean to do everything to get super close to drain all the clock and to do it perfectly. They didn't do it perfectly. But it worked. And i'm not saying. Oh worked like the result justifies the process. Kellen moore said in his press conference after the game on monday that their whole offensive. Id and disposition to aggressively attack. What defenses give them. And i think that that's what they're doing their game against tampa called for throwing the ball fifty eight times because of defensive line in the fact that the cowboys without zack martin. This week zack. Martin was back and was incredible. Pf highest graded player at any point so far on this young season. I know where two weeks in And so the game just lent itself more to having success on the ground tarrant steel. Who played for lyle. Collins was remarkable in in his first. Start this season really impressive. The cowboys were the only people who believed in him. Everybody thought that was a terrible idea. But kickback martinets attack..

I i'm going to start with Gardner minhsiu getting traded from jacksonville to the eagles which was interesting as the eagles. Were talking about possibly trading furnish on watson what happened there knows. Sure someone else anyway. They got gartner minzhu instead and they released. Nick mullins to make room for gardner. I had the thought when it's all these comments today and it became like we said it's abundantly clear. Jimmy is going to get the first crack. He's going to be the week. One starter unless something mind bogglingly happens in this last. Preseason game you know jimmy goes out and throw his three interceptions. Yeah maybe he doesn't start but to me. My thought was a wonder how much of this is. A locker room thing where lance is. Not clearly better he. He's likely better and more likely to improve. Thus would be better long-term than jimmy. But jimmy was hurt and there is a very big philosophy amongst players and around the nfl. Did you can't lose your starting job. Due to injury one of the big controversial things with alex smith and colin kaepernick. That there was a tense situation. There or part of the locker room was pissed that alex smith lost his starting job due to injury and is a little different. It's an off season. i got over it. Because you know why. Colin kaepernick with kicking ass and it's ten start was the super bowl. Guys news their job to injury all the time. Ask tony romo about that. Guess out dak prescott. Got in because tony romo got hurt and then went back was lighting it up tony. Romo's ask was on the bench like that is bull and all players know that crap you do lose your job to injury. The most exciting thing about this forty-nine season was trae lance from the second they made the trade up to three. It's been building to this point. And i just i don't get it. I'll disagree with you there. The most exciting thing about this season to me is the chance to be a contender again. Not trae lance. It's fact that this roster is ridiculously good. But here's the thing levin and no forty niner fan wants to hear this at this point of the air because we're in the business of hope and hope springs eternal and i get it but let's just be real okay. Chances are the dudes that have gotten hurt. The past few years are going to get hurt again. That's just what happens. Hurt guys get hurt okay. The only thing that could rescue us from that muck that crap fast that we saw last year is a starting quarterback who can rise above who can keep it together when all else around him has failed. That was trae lance. That's who he was drafted to be and the forty niners half potentially maybe taken that away so we could be back in a season where we just have to watch this offense struggle to go down the field and have to do like jimmy. Garoppolo did the other night a sixteen play drive. Which by the way didn't even get all the way into the red zone before jimmy garoppolo through a stupid interception. that took points off the bore. I i don't wanna have to watch that anymore. Well there's a difference between last year and this year. what and you just mentioned him trae lance. There's nick mullins and cj beathard behind jimmy. If jimmy struggles like that jimmy will get pulled. If jimmy gets hurt trae lance will go in. Its nick mullins in cj beathard coming in to suck it up and ruin the season and caused a bunch of losses because they're completely ineffective. That's the difference. Jimmy garoppolo could ruin the season like look at week one last year to ruin the season he might be able to ruin one game as vice that i don't disagree with you. I'm just saying he's not going to be able to ruin the season like last year. Because there's actually a viable backup option to where jimmy is sucking. Jimmy's gonna find his ass on the bench and not be a starter in the nfl anymore. Because he sucks. No team is going to go out and get him to be a starter if i beamed you down from another planet and i just said watch these two guys would you. What would be your argument for jimmy. Garoppolo over trae lance like there is none if you just watch them this preseason. What is the argument. How have you washed jimmy garoppolo. He's barely played but when he played he's doing the same stuff you see eleven. He drops back to pass. It fits i read is not there. You could see him panic yes his feet. Go nuts in the pocket and i. You don't have to account for him as a runner. So i think it's best to say that trae lance actually gives them the best opportunity not to only make superbowl molly but to win the super bowl. I think that's definitely true going forward. I mean that's why you spend all the draft capital to move up and grab him and you see what's happened in the division seattle. Did it to get a safety. Because he's missed a lot of games for the niners when he plays for the niners they win three out of four games three out of four over. A course of seasons they get to a super bowl garoppolos. Not that good then. It shouldn't be hard to replace him. But what we see shanahan same coach. Same scheming guys wide open right. What we see is with his replacement they lose three out of four for the same team. Garoppolo is very good and underrated. He cannot do all the things that trae lance will eventually be able to do but rookie quarterback versus a guy. Who's been to a super bowl. No if you think you're ready to win and the niners are you stay with the guy who you've been there with. That guy gives you the best chance still so. Here's the question max. But i don't think people placement but what i'm saying is if you have a guy who's good and he's a veteran and you have a team you believe might win the super bowl this year. I'm not putting a first year starter. Whose even inexperienced at the college level. I'm not starting him thinking. I'm going to win a super bowl with that guy. I am thinking you know what he gives us a premium over garoppolo going forward and by the way garoppolo might get hurt and it's moot point anyway right. That might happen. And if that happens just hope the best for trae lance. It's just as you know better than i do. For rookies specially at that position. It's cup lemme ask you guys. This is a tough decision football arguably right hundred obviously we know they have a top notch running game top notch defense. They did lose robert saleh which is going to be huge an excellent defensive coordinator now with the jets but looking at the this division top to bottom according to caesar's rams have the best odds to win it and then niners what would you say. Who do you see winning it. I'm gonna go with the forty niners sympathetic that you look at last year. I think if this team wasn't plagued by the injury bug they actually make the playoffs. You get nick both back to pair him up. You got aaron armstead. You've got giovane kin law right. You have four you look at the linebackers you have greenlaw you have warner now. The only questions defensively. I will go with the secondary. It might not be as good when you have a good front seven. Your secondary doesn't have to be great. They can just be decent. You look at the niners hold. You're going with the niners with trae lance starting when we have all these other top notch quarterbacks in this division trae lens wow now i would say the rams although i have to admit camakers usually running back gets hurt. Nobile like what in fact when you look at whether how that affects the super bowl odds it doesn't move it much because whether we like it or not. A lot of these guys are interchangeable. And that's why they don't get paid in the sense that it's more about the offensive line. If you're running back in the nfl you're talented. You've got a good offensive line. A great running back. We'll get you a premium over a good sort of the forty niners. Do have got alex mack. Then you trent williams they can absolutely run the ball not question that with the niners. He can't just be that guy that's throwing that pass negative three yards like you were just talking about. He's got to do more. And i know it's only a series but like i i kinda wanna see like okay jimmy. You're supposed to be like on your best game. What do you got for us. Well that's of the issue here right. They're only giving him one series. That's a lot of pressure on the man. Because i most teams. I'm seeing so farming. We've only had three preseason games but the first drive is not pretty like you need a second to get going. So if you're going to compare jimmy garoppolo on his first drive to trae lance getting multiple drives getting going and get you know the fan base is really going to start loving on trae lance very quickly If he warms up. But yeah what i want to see jimmy. Garoppolo is we already know. You can hit the five yard passes. Don't even try that. We know you can do that. You don't need a practice. That throaty not even deep. Can you throw fifteen yards stumpf field fifth time. I would love to see that by the way maybe kyle control all the fan base. I play right play action. Chuck it deep down the field. If you're jimmy. Maybe you hit the touchdown and then bam. That's your one drive. You drop the mic in your done for the night. They really really should do that. I really believe it because if they want to spam days to tobacco okay. We're okay with jimmy garoppolo for at least a little bit. We know tran trae. "Eight passing yards which was twenty sixth in the nfl so there are awful but they still had the tenth most pass attempts in the league so they hit that number as a team. Hit the over despite being crazy inefficient. So what can we expect this year even if they have just five hundred attempts five hundred passing attempts this year which would have been bottom five in the league. A year ago hurts hits this over if he just improves is why. Pa from seven point one seven to seven point two seven so it's not asking a lot for him to just increases efficiency a little bit if they are bottom five in the league and pass attempts will then you might be asking well. They have a new head coach. How can you rely on that. We'll nick serianni comes from a cult team. That was pretty conservative as well but they had five hundred and fifty two pass attempts last year so even if hurts isn't quite as efficient as he was a year ago if they just have more pass attempts than they had a year ago he can still hit this over so i think there is a a wide path to hitting these overs and the numbers are more baking in what they did last year on a terrible year as opposed to what might be regressing to the mean in twenty twenty one. Yeah i i'm totally with the. I understand that and listen. I don't think we're looking at a situation outside of a blockbuster shawn watson trade where jalen hurts is going to find himself on the bench. That's another one of the things that i think that we can pass along to the listeners. Here is if you are going to bet some overs. Just make sure that you're betting on a guy with these overs. That does not have the possibility to find himself riding the pine. And that's one of the things. Where when we start to kind of dig into some of these other quarterbacks you know if if the situations if he if you think there is a chance that their leash could end up being a little bit shorter than you know some of these other guys than just take that into your handicapping whenever you're doing that and again with hurts. This seems like a situation stephen. If they don't trade for a deshaun watson they're going to spin this season trying to figure out what they've gotten this guy and whether or not they're going to need to look to replace him next year if he can't get it done and so i find it very hard for me to believe that hurts is going to do to performance find himself getting benched throughout the course of the season. Yeah right now. The backup quarterback joe flacco. I mean they're not going to be rushing to put flag and even if he gets beat out for the backup job. It's nick mullins. Who at this point isn't going to be a starting quarterback in this league so there's no upside with those guys. You're basically would just be putting a band aid on the situation. Where at least with hurts you know. There's some upside so you might as well see what you have in the kid. Yeah and we're getting numbers here from the book that either leave or much closer to the floor for this offense than they are the ceiling which again creates a wider path to hitting these overs. So that's like forty six percent of those guys in the preseason last tip and this one's harder to quantify but ride teams with veteran quarterbacks that are deep on the depth chart that cause a situation like the eagles where nick mullins is. The third string quarterback he's going to get a decent look there and nick mullins was just starting last year. He was starting primetime games for the forty niners. He's not horrible. So these these journeymen these veteran guys that are towards the end of the depth chart that are gonna get a decent number of snaps factor. That in your handicapping. Yeah it is interesting right because typically coaches know what they have with those guys. They aren't looking to play a ton in the preseason. They want to figure out that that battle but qb foreign qb three The problem is when they are. Qb three already Yeah i don't mind the angle. Well yeah just. And and take a look at the depth chart because through kramer's point two. Sometimes there are situations where there's a young guy there's a new guy that they're bringing in that they want to get a look at it. Kind of depends on the on the. qb room. i mean in particular with the you know like the steelers big ben. Obviously they need to see what they have with him. Mason rudolph you kind of already know but haskins gets kind of interesting because he's actually had some. Nfl games they wanna see him. So factor that kind of stuff in the qb rotation and especially qb's that have had decent runs in the nfl. Or i mean again. Decent by not completely horrible and real quick just just to add not necessarily like a preseason trend but just kind of a prediction. Some of these coaches. I think you're going to try really hard in this first game. Whether or not their team that can do it. And dan campbell is the lions. That's that's one. I'm just kind of circling. Because he's sleeping on him and he thinks that because he's a safety that usually get the better of those guys especially in the slot but in twenty nineteen. I forget it was at the end of the game that i rams game. Jimmy ward raced to back to back plays third and fourth down With higby was he had to. I had to coverage our everett. Which is a de cover cooper kupp which that's all the more impressive because that's a wide. The guy never got targeted because he stayed on the same side of the field. The offense knew exactly where he was so they targeted the defense in other areas based on his coverage which emmy award. You can't do that. You don't know where the guys are going to be. And i think that's why he feels like he's getting tested so often. And it's not. "We're to get into the fifty three man roster. So today, we're going to make some projections I did a roster projection heading into training camp was on July twenty seven I had Jalen Hurd making the team I had Sean Coleman making the team. I had a few other players that they're just not going to make the team for whatever reason. So we're going to do that again today after trying to cap after all the news after everything we've seen and read and it will let's just compare to see what's changed since. So start with the first things first quarterback, Jimmy, Garoppolo, nick, mullins, CJ, Beathard I think they all make the roster I. Don't think that that's going to be very you know very controversial. It should be. I mean yeah. I I. Agree I all three of them making the roster as well. Especially, this season with Cova did I imagine that most teams will try to carry three quarterbacks if they can especially just given you know you never know. What happens if Garoppolo or mullins or you know they were to test positive or whatever the case is right and they were mistime than having Beth who understands the system? He's not great by any means just having them in the building is going to be advantage. Advantageous this season. I made this comment to someone else earlier Beth. `Red to George Kettle is Kinda of like you know James Jones or Mike Miller was. and. Lebron he's like teams back in the day. He used to have like those guys like travel with him. I think CJ beathard and George kind of like that George must have somewhere in his contract that Caesar method must be on the roster wherever he is.
