"Everyone listening to this show loves the four seasons And, of course, they were the subject of one of the great Broadway musicals of All Time, Jersey Boys and Tommy DeVito. He was an original member of the four seasons he died of covert 19. And my buddy Rick Ellis, who wrote the musical He actually lend, wrote the score with Marshall Brooke, but I'm sorry, wrote the book with Marshall brought her into the four seasons and Rick knew Tommy DeVito spend some time with him as he was researching his musical on the four seasons and Rick Ellis joins us on the line. Good morning, Rick. Good morning, Michael. Good morning, Lynn. Good morning. So, Rick, So, Rick, what was Tommy DeVito like to sit around with Because in your telling of the story, Tommy DeVito is the guy who kind of gets involved with the mob a little bit and some of the stresses and strains he puts on the group of the stuff that breaks them up. Yeah, well, you know, Tommy bless his heart was was a real character. You know, we had spoken at length with Frankie Valli, who, of course, is the You know the famous voice of the group, and we had spoken at length with Bob Gaudio, who is the I am the principal songwriter of the group, and they were interesting and fascinating, and they had great anecdotes. But you got the feeling that they had told these stories, lots and lots of times, and they were a little bit written in stone. And then finally, we got a number for this guy in Vegas. Tommy DeVito, the third surviving member, Nick Massi, the fourth member had passed away by the time we started working on the show, so we got this guy's number, and we called him in Vegas and I'll never forget it. I'll never forget it. Uh, we were both at Marshall's apartment sitting across the room from each other on different telephones looking at each other. And you know, it was our eureka moment. Just the The sound of his voice and the things that, he said, because everybody knows the songs, But nobody knew the story because it had never been told. And and and Tommy started to present it in almost Shakespearean way. I'm talking love and hate and poverty and power and music and money and revenge and betrayal and crime and punishment and women and Wives, sort of dysfunctional family feud started to emerge in our head and ringmaster of all of that wasn't Frankie who was a kid when it all started. It wasn't Bob who was a boy studying music in North Jersey. It was Tommy DeVito. Very woz, this voice in our ear, the classic bad boy. You know, he was smart and he was funny, and he even as an older guy, by the time we spoke to him. You know he was in his late seventies, and you could tell he was dangerous. You could you know, he was sort of larger than life, even over the phone, like, you know, like Richard, the third or Sonny Corleone or somebody like that. And Tommy brought this intrigue and the vengeance and the Shakespeare to the story, although our writing isn't as good as Shakespeare, But Tommy wasn't good to Shakespeare. Hey, Rick, Um Michael was rig ailing us with a story yesterday. I wonder if it's true or not. He was claiming that when you guys originally conceived, the show is gonna be more on the order of OB A and weaving the story around the Four Seasons songs and that all changed once you spoke with Tommy DeVito. Yeah, well, that's almost right. But you know, as with almost everything that Michael, that's real, that's real. There's a little kernel of truth in there. Real real. The real truth. Is that what What I was asked to do when I was originally, you know, sitting at my desk and the phone rang. I was asked to do, uh, sort of a mamma Mia got gag with the music of the four seasons. To which you know, I famously replied she I love the volunteer. But do you really think there's a whole story innit in there? No, no, not not the volume or on the the Thank you, Valli and the four seasons. Why the one? Why would you? Why would you want to do that? You know somebody ready? Did Mamma Mia, You know it's it's a big hit. Go see Mamma Mia, That's what you want. And the guy said this is just a guy. This is a music industry guy who had the rights to their music. And he said, would you be? Would you be willing To meet with them with Frankie. And with Bob Gaudio that you know who wrote all the great songs and, um and I said, Okay, you know, because you know, you work in the theater of free lunches of free lunch. So, um, I called your friend Marshall Brickman. I called my friend Marshall from I owed. You know, a nice little lot of money to because I'm a terrible poker player. And so I became very popular in Marshall's poker group because I was always losing And I called him and I said, Can I wipe away some of my debt? If we write a musical together, he said, Well, I don't know. I've never written a musical. And I said, Well, neither have I, But we'll go and we'll have lunch with you guys. And, you know, maybe we'll just waste our time. Whatever. So by the time we went to meet them, we already knew that it wasn't gonna be Mamma Mia! We don't know quite what it was gonna be. But in the back of that little dark Italian restaurant 46 street that I'm sure we've all been in the, uh, it became clear while we were waiting for the you know, for the Caprese salad, you know that? That's what happened to them. Just As they were talking about their lives was a much more interesting story. You know, it's like that. Those movie ads, you know where it says based on a true story, But then you know, this is based on a true story that nobody knew. So it's not only was it based on the true story was based on a good story. And you know we were just two writers who felt like we'd really That down, you know, to a table with gold strewn all over it. It was, you know, we were leaning in we were, you know, we were really interested in what they had to say. So that's when we said, Well, maybe we should do something about you guys. And you know, a few months after that, After talking exclusively with the two of them, we finally got on the phone with with the late, great Mr DeVito, and it all came together. So on I do think, Rick, you paid your debts to marshal over the course of the time with the world from Jersey Boys. Uh, well, you know, I mean, there are debts and their debts..

But in the back of that little dark Italian, Russia on 46 Street, it became clear while we were waiting for the Caprese salad that what happened to them Just As they were talking about their lives was a much more interesting story. And I do think, Rick, you paid your debts to Ah, marshal over the course of the time with some Jersey boys. Well, you know, I mean, they're adept in their death. I will always be indebted to Marshall Brickman because he sort of taught me how to be a man as well as to how to be, you know, a decent writer, but it's good to have people to aspire to in life. And and Marshall is certainly that for me, let me throw in one last thing, which is just to say one of the things that we did, because we didn't really know Tommy. When we were writing the show was to really paint him as this sort of as the villain of the story, but you only had to meet him. He only had to meet him with his family and his daughter. Darcel and his grandson, Thomas were in the hospital with him over the weekend last weekend. You know he wasn't alone. But all you had to do was meet the real guy with his family over the years to see how Treasure. He was really how he was always their man of the year year after year after year in its fans feel the same way and that and our director does Mac Enough always says, As long as Jersey boys is playing somewhere, Tommy DeVito will always be the springtime of the four seasons and I just think that's a nice thing to say over the air today in his honor. Rick Alice. He wrote the jersey Boys with Marshall Brickman. And you know Marshall Brickman is right, Len. Yes. Yeah, He loved his boys. You see, I just said that, but he also wrote Annie Hall with Woody Allen. Oh, he was sure he was a big Woody Allen collaborate. Marshall Brickman. It was a pleasure to talk to pleasure. Pleasure to talk to my friend. Itwas really interesting. Good stuff. Really good stuff. And Jersey boys. I was looking. I was looking at the worldwide gross of Jersey Boys. It's all Yeah. $3 billion now, so I think how much his work Ellis, get out of that. Well, you know, more than more than you and I we're going to see in our lifetimes. That's for sure. 92% of that or something like that. I think that's also percent of that is a lot of money, folks all right up next, Trump says, Well, if the election's close, and if he loses, he might not go peacefully. How did Nancy Pelosi take that? Yeah, I know that's all coming up next day. Almost every day you hear, let myself talk about balance of nature's fruits and vegetables in a capsule of what it does for health. We want you to feel the difference in your health by adding balance of nature's fruits and vegetables, Really 31 whole ripened fruits.

Interviewing Tommy DeVito as he was putting the show together, so I'm sure he's got some kind of fun stories about how he wrote Jersey Boys and the time he spent with Tommy DeVito. I remember him telling me that he interviewed all the all the four Seasons. The ones that were still alive, I guess to put that show together, so I bet he's got some good. Tommy DeVito stories. Well, there are two surviving members now. Michael. Frankie Valli, of course. And Bob Gaudio. Those are the two Yeah. Is that you have, and there were only four right? Yes. Because they were fourth one was Nick Massey. Massey died in 2000. He died a long time ago. Nick Massi 20 years ago. I remember going to see Jersey boys. I went to see an early preview up of it. And of course I look around. Everybody's going completely bonkers and nuts for it. But now I was an early spotter of Jersey Boys and early spotter of the Lion King. I have to say one of the few people who knew the Lion King was going to be bigger than the Phantom of the opera. Oh, by the way, I just want to say my book, singular sensation.
