"Thursday melted with entrepreneur the playbook and I have Nick Keller, founder and CEO of benchmark benchmark is an extraordinary business in London as four different business units under it, but aligned with compassionate capitalism. There's a bigger purpose to what you do. I know you started as a sports agent, just like I did. In my sports career. A lot of people ask, how do you connect the dots backwards from being in one of the most scarce competitive industries into being truly an abundant social impactful leader? David. Thanks for having us here and we're excited to be with you. I think the you have to go to the roots done you of of where you start and funding fundamentally for me. Um, drawing together, sport and social change came very much from the heart of my experience in education. I was a pretty average student averagely average is actually being generous. But where I found solace was on the sports field, particularly on the rugby pitch on its I suppose, through that experience, no hell of a struggle actually getting through school despite how much Money, my parents through the problem. It was still always a struggle. And so the very heart of it, sport was a bit of a salvation for May on, it's where I found solace. And I suppose that the heart of everything I've done in business comes down to a simple truth that I have a belief that sport Um, can have a positive impact on individuals on community on society on DNO. Now, I suppose more than ever will play and should play a dramatic role. And what else society looks like in the moment. So there's two schools of thought when it comes to sports, right sports is such an emotional attachment, and I think the two schools come from the necessity of sports that it's a microcosm of the world and we should utilize sports the unite the world and move on. And then there's the school of thought that sports is a distraction. Right that the higher level people that utilize and run the world have utilized sports to distract us from what's truly going on as long as they're on the pitch or.

The one exception to that is the North bound for all five drivers. You try to get through the Renton area. We're seeing the slowing begin right there at the Maple Valley Highway to continues up to 44th in Newcastle plan on a 30 32 minute drive now to go from Renton up into Bellevue. So that's kind of our out. Liar. Right now. We do have a little bit of slowing on south bound four or five as well as you kind of come over the crest of the hill and start working your way down. Into Canyon Park. That is a sunshine slow down in this superb right there in the conditions of kind of weird because we have some low lying fog there and moisture in the air, and then the sun's kind of coming through it, So that's because certainly a visual described distraction as you head down. 33 minutes from ever to Bellevue was good 33 as well from ever it into Bellevue. Little slowing through Mountlake Terrace, but not bad. The Valley Freeway is seeing a very quiet drive. We have some slowing it to 24th actually is kind of heavy their 24th up to Ellingson before it breaks free on again. I believe that's kind of a sunshine slow down there as well because the sun's coming in the side of year. Your car there, so it is somewhat distracting. There's you as you're driving up the Valley Freeway and rain ears kind of off to your bottom, right there is your driving up. It's coming right in your side view. So just be prepared for that. I think that's what we're dealing with their give yourself 40 minutes. There was you go from the Puyallup area up into renting the drive on the I five corridor. Looking really good as you make your way from Lacey DuPont on the way, Olympia to Tacoma's 30 minutes. Out of the north, and I think I already mentioned We got 33 minutes They're from ever to Seattle or Bellevue across the lake were still in very good shape. Nothing out of its equal or out of Redmond as you head west. And just to let you know they have changed the conditions up, but the Snoqualmie pass chains are now required. As you're heading across the Steve Snoqualmie pass Right now, Traction tires are required on Steven. So the difference there means I mean, you got to chain up even if you have studded tires on Unless you have all wheel drive. That's the rules. So it's getting a little bit worse. Over snow cone. Snoqualmie Pass this report brought to you by the Emerald Queen Casino. Enjoy safe, clean, comfortable escape where we all win. Let's keep the curve flat together. Emerald Queen Casino, the entertainment capital of the Northwest. Well, a day after some pretty torrential rain. We have clear skies now and and it's currently 40 degrees in downtown Seattle. "Companies. That are there we have. I think a really big chore and That's why I believe in enjoying that consistent persistent pursuit and I'm glad that there's people like you that are leading the way and I know you're here with the dodgers in Tiger Woods Foundation. Which a lot of our former interns and employees will be involved as well Sharing with the world how he just step-by-step crawl before we walk run. Make this a better place to live and I think that's the perspective that I loved this year on. This place is like a lot of these issues may scare you maybe complex. You may not understand everything that we about but in the end it's all about just trying your best to make this a better place to live and I think for our industry. This is the great joy and the opportunity and the optimism of it all our industry sport has this fantastic opportunity to draw people into this discussion. Because I think you mentioned at the beginning it. Kinda everyone sort of beavers around it whether it's government privacy. Whatever it is everyone's engaged in it and As we look at that perspective It's not reach out to all the rights holders teams leagues etc to understand that we are in changing times and we do as an industry. Have this fantastic opportunity to really bring things together and use ourselves as a platform to reach out you know. The Great Challenge for around sustainability is who we to engage the most young people in corporations who are probably the most engaged to install the corporation. So I look at our opportunity as an industry and what you and Dave what. You've talked about You know so much in every book you've read it you you you've written the economy talks about it and so at the very hard to pit we have this wonderful opportunity. to deliver real changes But you know we need to move on and and and make sure that we're engaging with the right people. Well certainly pleasure having you here nick and just looking forward to all the great things that you're GonNa do and more in Portland looking forward to getting engaged with you to help assist in any way I can to be of service. So what extraordinary business? I loved learn about held off on doing too much research accidents. I loved to learn right without. You know there's just that when you're doing these things for me. It's a balance of understanding where that background is but most importantly at least getting fresh perspective to ask the right questions or else you do so much. We'd be our way from what I think. People understand. So thank you so much. Thank you for everything you do and everything. It's been a pleasure to be thanks to you to also Keller and founder of benchmark. Check him out. "I see is I looked to impact over a billion people in my life to be happy because I think this mentally challenging separateness that exist throughout sports and everything else and I think sports is a great key to it but it's really what I see. Benchmark is about is you're building communities so the interesting thing on the mental health piece. It's always personal by the way when someone's in it and we'll come onto that we've started a platform called stand the game with the US leagues or behind us And the center stone in the National Action Alliance Suicide Prevention and and we'll be hosting not again this year. We had the first one this year. A crucial conversation The mental health pieces for me one of the most exciting pieces about it and West. Balkan play really fundamental role is when we look in the workplace There's this complete intersection around performance That exists what I'm interested as well vulnerability and performance into sect. Because we're now in a time where we've got a crate Environments where people can truly be themselves when they can express vulnerability in that. Performance will not be doubted whether it is that moment. Most poignant and exact is between sports coach and athletes and where you are at the edge of the human capacity physically emotionally and mentally in many ways so I think has a huge role to play In demonstrating to people that it's okay to talk about it That is vital that actually humans performances benefits from vulnerability. And you know my journey. And I you know I was talking to you. You'll team jake in the car over here and the more crucial sport is when you're younger. The more you have to disentangle yourself later in life my experiences and this applies to a lot of professional sports. People that I've worked with We use it as a crutch to get through some of those most vulnerable moments when we're younger and Although I wasn't a professional sports person as close to a lot of pressure and it took me ten years to unravel the insecurity. Anxiety because I've been using sport as a crutch to get me through to those little beasts little booths on the ego the self-esteem that comes from putting a crunching tackle on offer having the ability to to take your anger out. in a legal way On a sports field and so for me. I think has a huge role to play to helping. Young people understand their own mental health issues. I think has a vital role to play. I mean we all know the physical benefits. Don't we of spoke on the mental Benefits as well but but playing in that team environment can be a very very positive thing. I think we have to be cautious and to ensure that we don't let kids engaged too heavily in sports to the detriment themselves later on In life as well and I think that's quite an important thing to me a long time to unpack it and rediscover who. I was without the crutch of schools. That's really interesting. I think you'll looking at your business. And there's so many different causes purposes and arms to it in a lot of people as this is an entrepreneurial show as well probably like how the heck do you do it. All so matthew critical question about just time management and focus so a lot of people have difficulty building one. Biz business with ten people and you. Have you know so many different businesses in projects and it's a significant level insignificant? Amount of people are involved. What is your best advice? Four time man has been in focus. Ohio remarkable brilliant people At the end of the day I had a fundamental problem. I imagine if I was at school now they'd be rolling out. Adhd that'd be road dyslexia They'll be rolling out a lot of names but back in your mind day. I think we're in the same general. A little bit made me run around the block. That was the cure. We sat at the back of the class. In Google abject confusion over with described. His teachable right By one teacher in a school report Which is devastating Actually it's devastating words to hear from an educator And so for me focus took me fifteen years so I failed many times Through lack of focus discovering you have a creative mind Through an education system designs acquainted And hasn't changed greatly now for the current environment wherein says even which even worse when you think about the distilling of information. I heard your web summit when he said Tony Bless. It's something really interesting. Web Summit teaching isn't teaching anymore. It's just distilling the amount of information withdrawing a young people and I think that we can have a whole further chat about that later. Because I think it's a very interesting area. So fundamentally for me focus was always very difficult and it was my downfall so once a monster that to a point it was all about hiring remarkable brilliantly intelligent normally younger people the An I have some exceptional people in my team. Md's that lead it which leads me to probably get on with what I'm best suited for Which is a bit of a is around the creative during dots together. I think you're you're someone that draws dolts together I get that sense as well. That's a very entrepreneurial piece creative piece of seeing how that's GonNa work that PISS GONNA fit in that Which means we're probably not the most of the same time so for me. That's a really crucial point but I I think when I think about those key things to business success An who you hire an autonomy is very crucial. People that can get on with things. Themselves is vital. So that's a big thing for me someone that you can. Har- that's autonomous. The second piece is someone. That's restless restless can be seen in a negative way in a positive way for Mayor. This restless this each do things better or find out how. I can do things differently and to always question not in a negative way how we can get better at something so I think if someone told me to choose two words it would be that autonomy and restlessness and of course focused. We now is is crucially important. That's A. B. B. kind of your future yourself be more interested than interesting. Yeah I noticed that you're talking about last issue. You know when we get stuck into this more compassionate capitalism side of things purpose driven lifestyles that revolve around business and NGOs and all types of organizations truly impactful business. One of the words that are is the elected but yet you seem to do really great job at it is profitability and profitability. Some people think is counterintuitive to what we do but to me. It's crucial so I'd love to see your perspective of profitability in Your Business and how you execute on or prioritize the profitability of the business beyond the purpose. So what's interesting is we. We started talking about a shared value model as soon as professor Michael Porter from Harvard. Coin to phase in two thousand eleven the whole business was established. The beyond sport group was established off the very notion the corporate sector was going to need a place to to hide or soften itself Post THE FINANCIAL CRISIS. That was the basis of business. The we we had an instinct I suppose the YOU'RE GONNA miss have to make social and business objectives together Tony Blair who was off champion actually To start with said in our opening was a remarkable opening. We had a lunchtime gathering. And it was Martin. Sorrell was the From W you know former. Wpp and Keith. Mills was that the guy ran the Olympics Lord putman from UNICEF and tiny black good got up and said I remember two thousand eight. We launched yes right in the middle of you. Just turn around and he said you know my only hope is we can hang on your so ahead of the wave we can hang on and he's completely rights and now everyone obviously is talking about purpose and I we don't sound so groundbreaking anymore But that's that's An- another discussion about where the future goes of purposes fascinating so for me getting the mix right is not seeing purposes A three sixty ton in your business in many people come Mississippi. What's our purpose law firm company? So what's our purpose? You'll purposes to bill more hours it's just to do it through the prism of whether it works for society and you now have more stakeholders than your shareholders. You'll stakeholders your employees. They all your clients they all your supply chain And of course they your shareholder but this also society as well and I think so for us That is a complete three sixty. Look the we'll have if if someone comes to US intend just want to be good to society. It's too broad. It's almost too big a brief right for us to work to a little bit but I also feel at the moment the when people are talking about it and attended event Last week in the subject matter was a prophet and purpose discussed and I said well. Can we stop talking about that and just talk about profit actually because the way things are moving the consumer is changing so attitudes of changing it? Seventy six percent of under thirty five will make a decision now based on whether they're buying or someone ethical. Sustainable we know now that certain people will really check out who they're going to be working for them wherever they contributing to society in some sort of way. So I think we need to stop this conversation on cowed. You blend the two together because the reality is. The market's changed. I'm so I think that's quite important. So there's that business case on the broader case there's a necessity to change at the moment and that's for of us because Fundamentally it's tougher for business to sell to a Fragmented World Anna's issues become more substantive to deal with the private sector has to blend very much And support the public sector over what changes going to look like and most fundamentally this comes to life when we look innovation and Change Your web summit and always sitting. I looking around pretty amazing. Seventy thousand people sold out. Yeah you know why look today and I saw the largest gathering of white people I've ever seen in my entire life in one place. I reckon ninety five percent of the people attending web summit where White House when the darkest people there. Yeah it was it was it was mind blowing and that's why beyond innovation as where Having now you know down at the dodgers in with the Tiger Woods Foundation with the SPN Essay P and ever fi is such a crucial event because my senses my sense is is the we. We only like sharing the spoils when we've created enough for ourselves as I walked around web summit and I was hosting some panels and you know the UN combat was there and is hiding something that the sustainable development goals media's on that and I just looked around. I said this is a complete disaster because when we're facing some of the most challenging times around Sustainability Hugely challenging times innovations. What's going to pull us out? No doubt and the edge if we're not bringing everyone to the policy illness We've got a problem on hand if we're not making sure that we have gender equity that we're bringing people in from less advantaged communities that we're sharing This tech revolution with a more diverse group with the diversity of thought. GonNa come from how we really going to address most of the issues around those seventeen sustainable development goals are being offered on the people the less advantaged so they know what the what's going on around they know the reality so that Real Challenge. I think is how do we really truly make innovation of compensation if this really is about the whole world coming together effectively then we really have to make that whole thing? But as I walked around web summit I was blown away by it and I walked away thinking. We have a even bigger discussion to have around stem education around how we make the tech revolution. Something that Shad. I think that's quite a big piece to pull together as well. Yeah I love your perspective in the awareness and attention out of all the people that I knew there met their spent those days. They're sharing the same as you from stages two panels to mentorship to you know. I would have to say that something that I try to be. Cognizant of and until you said that it didn't click in my mind. What a disaster. That actually was or is But there's so many complex issues which puts you in the forefront because without people like you without the insight experience situational knowledge in order to execute or at least share a different perspective as a consultant with the largest organizations and I know we were closely with sap and their global in an amazing.
