"Barr along with my colleagues, garlic food and Damien Sasha. Spend about ten years, but Nick's fans remember it like it was yesterday Lincoln. Splits the defense again, gets to the round. Wow. Charlie laden doesn't again. And the crowd on their feet fed up to this man. But even if it looks like his teammates don't believe what they're seeing. That highlight you disturbed with nicks announcers Mike breen and Walt Clyde Frazier courtesy of MSG was just the beginning of Jeremy Lin's unbelievable hot streak back in 2012 that we now know as Lin sanity. Yeah, over the course of that 9 game stretch was the bar, Jeremy Lin averaged something on the order of 25 points per game, just over 9 assists per game and shot over 50% from the field. He led his team to some very impressive wins, but none bigger than that went against Kobe and the Lakers when he dropped 38 points. Yeah, that is incredible. And that stretch of games made Jeremy Lin a superstar, not just because of how well he played, but because of how improbable it was for a then pretty much unknown player to do what he was doing and especially as an Asian American. That 38 point performance at MSG is now the subject of a documentary 38 at the garden. And to talk to us about Lynn sanity the making of that documentary and about some business ventures involving Jeremy Lin. A man who broke ground in the NBA here in the United States. We welcome the film's executive producer and founder of capital, Dave Liu. Dave, welcome to the Bloomberg business of sports. Thanks for having me. Lynn sanity, yes, I remember it very well and I'm watching Jeremy Lin play and I'm an old geezer sports fan. It's like, you know, I've seen, okay, let me see what Jeremy just oh man, you know, that was a special time if you were a Knicks fan or just an NBA fan in general. Can you take us back to that time and what it was like? Yeah, I mean, I grew up a new fan born in Queens grew up in Jersey, rooting for the next for years. And it has been a painful several decades and 2012. When that happened, it just it was incredible. And especially how many American Asian American rarely seeing anyone that looks like you in the NBA seeing someone rise for that stretch to be the best player in the world and all eyes on him was special because so long we feel pretty unseen or invisible in the leaguer in sports in general and to see someone that looked like myself playing at that level. Was incredible. And I was very fortunate enough to be at several of those games. And so I was in the garden when he dropped 38 on Kobe and that was a special night for me, probably one of those experiences I've ever had. So explain to us how this project came together 38 at the garden because I recall that during linsanity and shortly thereafter, Jeremy Lin was shy. He didn't exactly want to talk to the media. Everyone was trying to get an interview with him, but he was trying to focus on his game and even afterwards he didn't feel or seem to feel very comfortable talking to the media. Yeah, I mean, I think it was more that he didn't like he wanted a spotlight to be on his game, but he felt like he buried the bird of like I just said before being the one representative of entire race playing an MBA and all the questions pointed at him because that was kind of more the story and he wanted to be more about the basketball than anything. And I think his whole life, that's always stood out for him, whether it be from racial epithets playing Ivy League to other different questions and signs and ESPN analysis saying using certain phrases like thinking the armor or whatnot. Just to interrupt for a second, Dave. In the NBA. So it's not like there haven't been Asians there. Yeah, a very different though, because he grew up in China was raised in China. He Jeremy Lin and point palace, California, it was American. He was California and state player of the year in high school. He didn't get any scholarships from any schools despite being the best player in hog, California, which is absurd. And so he's a born and bred American and I think feeling like he was some kind of anomaly. And feeling having to represent all of Asian America was very different because I mean yummy 7 7 or he's a very natural gifts that were beyond anyone. So he could dominate, but Jeremy was 6 three. He was the same height as many people. And he didn't he wasn't supposed to be there. He wasn't drafted. Yao Ming was picked and known to be, he was bred to be this giant center that was going to dominate. But John Lynn was not supposed to even get there. And then he wasn't given a chance until that chance was just happened to fall in his lap when all the injuries happened on the Knicks. And he got that moment and he sees that. David, similar to yourself, you know, I was born in Queens. I grew up in New Jersey. I mean, I just have one question, man. How did Stanford miss this kid? I mean, let's just be clear to all our audience. You know, German man attended Harvard University. He lived across the street from Stanford. One state for Palo Alto, they upset matter day, talk to me. How did they possibly miss him and talk to us really about the stereotypes that Asian Americans suffered from men and whether or not anything has changed today? Yeah, that's just perfect question, especially given the film the three 8 garden. So I mean, he was the one that state champion he let his team at state championship. He was the high school player of the year in California. The metadata, as you said. And he didn't get any scholarship off of zero cost departments. He got two MIT and Harvard took him and basically he couldn't get recruited by any D when teams, what he wanted to play D one basketball. So we took the Harvard, the chance to play at Harvard to play against our teams like Yukon and shine. But I think at the end of the day, he didn't look the part. And I think a lot of coaches and staff didn't think he could cut it. And do you want to basketball? They're like, oh, well, this is a great story. Probably not going to keep going in division one because you have to be bigger and stronger in a certain way. But I think a lot of the baggage that stereotypes that people have around Asians that were weaker or smaller, not strong enough. Ken ball, whatever it might be. Those are all kind of laid upon him. And he was his career. And

"The stack. I always wanted to be an author, but I wanted to be want to be. Let me not say that in the past tense. A fiction author. Yes, your honor. And I never imagined wanting to write about myself in my story, not that I didn't think I was compelling or interesting, but it was just never something that I ever really had a true desire to do. So in 2019, my literary agent at CAA told me that there's a tremendous amount of interest in the publishing world in your story. And I'm like, really? Okay. I know I've been in the headlines and I know for why, so I sort of get it from a curiosity standpoint. And the book went to auction. I mean, it just, like, I wrote a book proposal and went to auction. I was very surprised that it did go to auction even though he told me it was. And then he told me, hey, if you really want to make your path in the publishing world, this is a good way to start. And once I sort of accepted that I have to write about myself, then me, you know, just my journalistic kind of mentality is that I'm leaving every play on the field. And I know, like you said, I have a lot of life to live, but the life I have lived. Yes. Is I think pretty compelling. And it goes really far beyond ESPN ESPN's the least part of these chapters that I write about. And so then it became a mission to own the narrative and also write about my life growing up in Detroit and my story and the most transparent, honest, vulnerable raw way that I could. Okay, so what do you want folks to know about the uphill portion of this? So the upper portion. I've told a lot of people have read it. Starts up kind of heavy, you know, very heavy. Gets lighter as you go through. But, you know, both of my parents are recovering addicts. And so I grew up witnessing a lot of things I shouldn't. There is a very, there's a very dark history of sexual abuse in my family. And so these are things I write about very honestly. Some other things happen to me personally. I write about having an abortion. I write about the fact that, you know, somebody tried to rape me when I was a pre teen, like all these other things. So it's very heavy, tough subjects, but I think it's important to deal with these topics. And I also think for families who, most of us come from very complicated dynamics, we don't always talk about them, but there's a layer of shame that are sometimes around these topics. And I thought it was very important for me to do what I could to take the shame off of it. Why did you turn to sports? I mean, where did that turn come from? I mean, we just heard your background upbringing. Was it a, I guess, a safe world in your mind? It was. I mean, people ask me, when did you fall in love with sports? I'm like, I don't know because I've never not loved sports. I've always been drawn to it. And the origination is being a tomboy. I love playing sports growing up in the neighborhood. I played fast pitch softball in high school and in middle school and was on traveling teams and that kind of thing. So I was pretty knee deep into just the competitive aspect of sports and that naturally bled over into a love of all different sports. The first team I ever loved was the Detroit tigers. They won when I was when I was 8 years old. In the 80s? 84. I can still name that whole starting lineup. I love that team so much. And then of course, you know, growing up in the city is, you know, pistons, red wings, never like alliance, was not my, you know. Well, I mean, Barry Sanders arrived. In the early 80s, early 90s. But you're talking because I was in just a date myself in college from 86 to 90. In Michigan at Ann Arbor, and that was tigers were killing it, the red wings were killing it, the pistons were on the verge of doing the right thing. I hated my horn and lamb beer. Do you hate it? I hated them. What? I'm a Nick fan. Well, yeah, that makes sense. I remember, I remember when the Knicks went in with Bernard king, in Joe Louis arena. I was there as a Nick fan in New York, and then I go to Michigan and I hated the, how are you surprised it would hate the bad boys? Yeah, you're right. I mean, I think that big and Michigan might have definitely a little bit. Let me know what was happening. Because they got really good. And then you were really suffering. But that was the Ascension of the Detroit sports world, for sure. And so all of those things put me into sports. And as you know this rich is that growing up, if you really wanted to follow your favorite sports teams, you read the newspaper. And so I started reading the free press and the news. And I realized that people actually write about sports for a living. This is fascinating. And I was already a voracious reader. I love to write. I was terrible at math. I had all the recipe for being a journalist, okay? And then in high school, I joined my high school newspaper staff, and at the time, the way a word for Detroit public high schools is the free press put a special insert inside the paper once a month that had all the high school newspapers in them. So you had to go to the free press to put together the paper. So the first time I walked into a newsroom, I was hooked. I was very fortunate that I figured out my life's work in tenth grade. Never done anything since. That was different. I've been a paid journalist since I was 16 years old because I worked at the free press in high school. And then with the Michigan state for the state news and for the journalism program, nasty little secret, I was a Michigan fan when I went to Michigan state. Well, I know you got the smarts in your jamel so. No, it's just that it was the fab 5 and it was a whole you couldn't even resist that. I know, because Chris Webber's mother taught at my high school. I went to mumford. Did you see C Webb went back for the first time? This past week? I heard that. I heard that, which is great because I do think I was really glad when him and jaylen, when that fence mended because I think it's still in the process, don't you? It is, but it's better than it was. No question. Right? I think there's progress been made. Maybe I won't go as far as to say the fence has been totally mended. But I've told them both this individually. Like, you guys are very important to the history and legacy of the city of Detroit. I love you both. I know you have things you need to talk about and work out. But it doesn't no good, you know, to quote Jay-Z, you know, it's no good when the family feuds. Not for the city of Detroit. You guys are too important for that. So they know I feel about that. What do they say to you when you say that? I've gotten positive responses from both. I think it's just a matter of just overcoming certain baggage and certain things. And I always feel like when you're

"You know, again, we talked about years ago, Chris, when cage was born, how you were going to deal with all the Atlanta sports onesies and bibs and stuff that came to the house. And, you know, you did storm. Well, you weathered the storm, but you also did what I did, which was acquiesce in a few fronts of not putting putting anything in an awkward risk. Where die hard Nick fan growing up, my son's a Celtic fan, I'd be like, if you told me that in high school I'll be like, over my dead body. Right? And then growing up in New York City when that vaunted my brother and I sat in the last row of the stadium in the Meadowlands for a 1986, I believe, wild card game matchup between Ken O'Brien and Tony Eason. Just to see who was right in the 1983 draft and obviously both of us were wrong. And so if you had told me that day, hey, your son and your kids are going to be patriots fans, I'd be like, no thank you. But you know, when my kids were born and the patriot stuff showed to the house and their quarterback is the goat, and the Michigan goat to say the least, and the jets aren't doing anything. Child services would come to the house. We're taking your children away. If you're going to put your foot down in any way, shape or form, use your very important preemptory because those are those are very limited. Few and far. You don't have an unlimited amount of preemptive. So certainly when the person that you're using your peremptory with just what's the word for it gave birth to the child and you just sat there and I was like, great job. Could you imagine? With all that's going on, physically mentally, hormonally, that you're like, we now have a talk about what I need to go in the house on the sports front. So when the Red Sox stuff came to the house though, that was, that's where I put my pre empty down. Get the one veto. I put the peremptory down for that moment right there. That's a Yankee household in my house. Now, you just rolled over on the Georgia bulldog front, like you've been rooting for them. They were your entire life. I had one..

"Maybe he's going to be a little bit better bill than what he was in New Orleans, but the guy we saw last year, I'm sorry. We're not getting that over the next 5 years. And that's prompted next. That's a big, big problem. Well, they also made the key mistake, Sean. They extended him. And it seemed like a fair price. You know, it wasn't like a $40 million a year or anything crazy like that. But it was an extension coming off a catastrophic playoff series. And, you know, sometimes the playoffs can change the course of somebody's career. Teams can figure out. I remember this happened Anton walker. Who was an all star? Was one of the best 20 guys in the league and Kmart in the nets playoff series. They had two years of their own. After the second time they played them in O three, Kmart just kind of ruined his career. He was never the same. He destroyed him and he really exposed him as like you can't post up and you're not a really good three point shooter either and you're not a good free throw shooter. What are you? And Antoine kind of went a tailspin from that point on. I wonder with what happened with Randall and the hawks last year if he's just at a different spot now where something got exposed. What do you think, Sean? It's possible, I think obviously the game plan for him in that playoff series was really, really good and the hawks were really long. And so they were able to contain him throughout and he took a lot of bad shots and you could see his frustration in that series. I don't think we should underestimate how much he basically changed the Knicks it felt by himself in one season. I mean, we're boring one mellow season. The mix have been kind of a disaster for a decade. And he gave everybody hope excitement. You know, we had a genuine, you know, a genuine all star a genuine leader, a genuine transformational story, not just for the team, but for him. You know, like, I was all in. I believed it was legit. Everything I watched, it seemed like, all right, this guy, for whatever reason, he figured it out. He's still a good pastor this year, which is last year was the first time you had ever realized that he could be more of a playmaker. I think the challenge that they have is they don't have a pure point guard on the team and so a lot of the playmaking falls to him. The person I would like to see do more playmaking is RJ, but the offense is still running through Randall a lot. I would be fascinated to know what kind of a player he is with more of a court general. You know with more of like a Chris Paul type, who is essentially running an offense because he doesn't really have that offense is very, very stagnant still, despite having more shooters. So I don't know, how does he evolve as a player? He's 27. He should be right into his prime. The shooting has taken a step back this year, but the shooting is taking a step back for every single player on the Knicks. They shot out of their minds in 2021. So I don't know. I mean, it raises the question of what should they do? Should they be pursuing somebody at the trade deadline? Should they be just keeping their powder dry and holding out for a good draft pick? I genuinely don't know what direction they should take for them. They're in a very, very weird spot. They're in a weird, weird spot because last year was such a feel good year. They obviously wanted to be a playoff team again this year. And I guess that's not out of realm. I mean, look at the east of 5 through like 12 is like separated by what? Like two or three games. So you got a soft party schedule. You ride off a couple wins. Then you can maybe get to where you need to be, but like they're not anywhere close to being like what you'd call elite championship contended as sort of deal. So they need better too. It's like sometimes the NBA, you know this. It's about stores. It's about having dudes. They don't have enough of that. They don't always die. You're hoping Barrett is eventually going to be a guy where you're like, all right, this is a perennial legitimate all star player. And he hasn't had the year and he hasn't taken that leap forward this season and I thought he was going to quite frankly. You know, they're 14 and 17. You think like last year, rose saved their save their bacon or a lot of games, right? There were games that were there down 8 down 12 and the rose lineup would come in and they would fight back. And rose has it been rose this year now is hurt. And then so you got that. You have rando who was a 40% three point shooter last year. Now he's down to low 30s. And that's cost them 5 points a game. So if you just say those two things, it makes sense that they're not as good as last year. Also, the east is better. And then that RJ point is the key point to me because the random thing him going backwards I can't say I'm shocked. What happened in Atlanta? And I had a lot of reservations about the extension because I would rather have them play it out, have them earn whatever the big extension is. Let's see. It was last year for real or not. The RJ thing, I mean, he was 17.6 last year for points, 44% field goal. This year is 15 points a game. And 40% field goal. And I'm not just talking stats. I test too. I thought he actually looked pretty confident in November. There was like a two week stretcher. It's like, oh, here he comes. And since then, it's been a cratering. And now it's like, can that guy be even the chess piece? Like let's say you're trying to get Darren Fox, which verno and talked about on the mismatch, which has been rumored for a while. He's a Kentucky guy. Obviously they love the Kentucky guys. You could argue fox on a new team, you're getting into stressed asset. But I don't know how you get him if RJ's not in the deal and if I'm the kings, I don't know how RJ is the centerpiece of a Fox deal. Where do you stand on him, Sean? In year three. I still believe he had a horrible, horrible November, in a way that like I don't even really understand what happened, he shot like 35% from the field. This is like a 6 foot 7 wing, shooting 35% from the field for an entire month. He would have plenty of nights where he would just go two for 13 inexplicably. In December before he went into COVID protocols, he looked a little better. I actually don't really want to give him up for a piece. I'd still think he said I want to build him too. He's 21. Because I still think there's so much like untapped potential that's there. I'm with you there, fantasy. Like, he's the third pick in the draft. It's always going to haunt you, okay? You could have had John morant. You're not saying that as much about Zion now because he's like 500 pounds, so that's a story for a different day. And that was the guy every Nick fan wanted, but you want to have this guy who's like the homegrown guy, the third pick. There's so much likeability with the player. You almost want to see somehow some way it's paid forward. And one note about this year. And I had a funny feeling this was going to happen. The Knicks took advantage of all these teams a year ago. The bubble, the long time in the bubble, next didn't have that..

"His size as a wing defender to that's gonna be super valuable. He's shown flashes as a playmaker. I think he's gonna be a good NBA player. He obviously works his ass off on his game. It's just, you know, people thought that it might happen a little bit faster for him. And it just happened and you know in New York, you're gonna be under the microscope. Yeah, yeah. I mean, he's a guy that, you know, people forget, he was like the hype high school dude. You know what I'm saying before, Zion Williamson took over every second shots away from Zion duke. Exactly like he was the guy, bro so I don't know man. I think I agree with you, I think he's gonna be a good NBA player, but I think the trajectory might be a little bit more traditional than the mega stars of Zion and John moret. You know what I mean? It might just take a little longer for him to get there. So last question before we wrap up the next portion of our conversation. And your idealized immediate future of the New York Knicks, what do you think happens in kaz is like, all right, this is what I would like to see within the next year or a year or two from now what I would like to have happen to the team. Oh, man. I mean, I think any rational Knicks fan and there's not many of us. But I think any rational thing would just hope for, you know, fight, you know what I'm saying? At the very least, put a team out there that people could be competitive. You know what I'm saying? And just stay in the playoff hunt. Any real Knicks fan or any knowledgeable, logical person is thinking like this is a championship team. You know what I mean? It's definitely not. Well, before the season, a Nick fan of Nick fan friend of mine actually his name is kaz.

"And now the welcome to the low post podcast where we have a first time guest a special guest. I'm very excited one of my favorite guys to watch play in the entire NBA and now in a story of a good homecoming, I guess we'll talk about that. The starting point guard for the New York Knicks, four time all star, I think, one time all NBA, UConn legend national champion, mister Kemba Walker, how are you? I'm good. I'm good. Thank you for that introduction. Appreciate that. Those are all real acclaims. I don't have to make anything. How you like and being back in New York? Oh man, it's a, it's a kind of an undescribable feeling. You know, it's just like surreal. Every time every day I wake up I'm just like, wow, like I'm really back without starting, you know? It's crazy. So players talk about coming home and most players are actually like, it's not as great for us as you guys all think it is because we got like tickets and we just got a lot of people around and then there's a different kind of pressure that comes with it. When this opportunity, when the OKC buyout happened and this opportunity came to you, what was your what was your first reaction? Was there any unease about it? Was there any can we look at some other things just in case you just want to go? Yeah, yeah, I just wanted to just wanted to come. I mean, I think, I think you write, obviously about, you know, players coming back home because it's just so much, you know, like we were from here and you know so many people, a lot of requests, you know, everybody's going to be pulling you with 20 million different directions, you know? So, but I think I had that feeling when I was kind of younger, but you know, not that I'm older and pretty established and just really comfortable in my own skin. Things are just different. You know, I just know how to move around and the most important thing I think for me is I know how to say no. You know, which can be really hard, which can be really hard as a professional athlete, especially, especially being younger. So yeah, you know, I'm really comfortable. I just know how to go about things and the whole different way. So yeah, I mean, coming back home, it's just special. It was a special opportunity for me and I just had to take it. You're in New York City, high school, basketball legend, obviously, how many games is your team losing four years of high school? Single digits? Yeah, single digits for sure. Yeah, it's for sure. But were you a Knicks fan growing up or were you were you now the younger your generation is like, I just am a fan of players. Were you a Knicks fan? Yeah, I think we weren't ready that good. But of course, it's gonna be a fan of no one of anything else. Yeah, I was definitely a Nick fan. When I was growing up, it was kind of a it was a difficult time for the next. "I was one of his biggest critics but he never ever took on nick fan base. He always said the right things about the knick fan base about being here and being with the new york knicks and everything and then a lot of the stuff that happened to him was out of his control. I mean there's a million guys. You could talk about mark sanchez. Sam darnold the knicks that you have mentioned all these guys have gotten roasted. I mean there was a time to. I mean i know eli. Manning won two super bowls towards the end of career. He was getting rose. Well i was definitely killed. But none of them took it to that level. And there's another part of this sims got roasted of course he ever take on the phone. You love the giants and the time has love him. Now yeah and he also had a history success there. Championship everything else. But so this is another part of this steve cohen. That he may be doesn't get when we found out that he was going to buy the team. We were ecstatic. Why because we felt like we were getting a rich owner. Who was going to spare no expense to turn this organization into his words dodgers east so they could compete with the yankees locally in the market here and spend the same amount of her fashionable organization. Dodgers east one of the standards in baseball. What do we get him. Quote tweeden mark moluccas. That's what we're getting from steve cohen. And what are we getting a pervert. Gm a dwi gm of players who were taking on the fan base a three hundred and forty million dollar brick job in free agency torn ligament in the best pitcher. We've ever seen in my lifetime. Because i didn't see seaver. And we don't even know what the hell is going on s. brain strained or is a tour. I don't know the s. sandy. We have no idea. This is what we've got so this is not the professional turn it around dodgers east stuff like we have a twitter troll owner. That's what we have. We don't have a rich. I'm gonna make this into a premier organization owner. We've got twitter troll foreign owner. So that's why it's extra frustrating anyway. I wonder if this is going to come out strong today at ten. Am gotta be prouty. Gansters well. I wanted him to respond to coen back on twitter and he didn't do it so i guess he was saving for us and why to right. So maybe he's trying to save his one hundred dollar night job there. Yeah i know you got to remember that. Even that got you gotta remember. He's got wirtz two hats. He's got gotta balance that again but that's an will cohen on espn wyatt. Forget how that worked out. Well i mean they are the network of the mets. And i do believe he may own portion of it. I would think you would i was. I wanted him to go right after on twitter about his job at a said why i did not know. Does it change your mind now. Thinking about his no. No get away those initially. Some resisting spouses can make the divorce process. Very difficult by refusing to sign the necessary. Divorce papers Others do so by hiding or trying to avoid service. Meaning somebody serving them. Because you know sometimes writers and producers trying to beat the front in front of the camera and we called out that their remix so if drake happens to be on the remix. We remakes honestly like literally. Sounds like i'm surprised. Break heading already. Put something out even if it was unofficial. But whatever he he wanted. Tell us court. I want to tell us though is speaking on a remix. I got crazy ball. Let's get to it deal rory. I'll be seeing this woman and finally decided to take her on a date to one of my two one of her favorite restaurants while we were there. She got a call from a friend who said that they were in the same area. My date then told her friends to come meet us and have dinner when they got there they. They almost ordered everything on the menu. And when the waitress came i told her that me and my day were on the same tab my looked at me with the side. Is they on that nights. You expressed to me. That i embarrassed her by not paying for her friends. Tab as well was i on the wrong. Was i to pay for everyone's tab girl that man took you on a date. He did not take you and your friends on a date that you invited. If your friends were offended that he didn't pay you should pay 'cause you invited them first of all. You should have invited them. I feel like the person who offers to take someone on a date. Usually pay now you know. I've definitely been on dates. Where i was invited on the date and then i had to pay but i've never been in a situation where someone invited friends and then everyone that want the man was to pay or one person was supposed to pay. That was real tacky on her in. What was your friends even cayenne. Maybe on a date feel. She was on bait well. Maybe she should've asked the guy if it was okay to invite her friends to and even if she did not think she was on a date. Why would you still assume it was his responsibility to pay for people that he did not invite out or maybe he doesn't even know all the us wrong girl. Get off instagram. Because that's the graduate taking the gut. You're thinking man supposed to just be out here. Just doing no no. It's not you find you find you a queen that's gone. You know now if he was like. "And money. Jesus Christ. I would go full girl with the dragon tattoo on that bullshit, but like I said, there's a lot to Britney story that people don't care to tell you. I told you what I told you, do with it, what you will. By the way, I found a new reason to hate LeBron James and I keep them coming if you got more reasons. Let me know. Did you know before LeBron James way back in the day before he chose to join the Miami Heat and form that big super team of Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade, he was obviously the NBA's hottest free agent ever. We all know that. That means every team was pulling out all the stops to get his talents into their city. That included, of course, the New York Knicks. And the Knicks back then literally recruited some of the biggest stars in New York. And that included Jimmy gandolfini and 80 falcon from The Sopranos. They were asked to reprise their roles as Tony and carmela soprano in this film short that was designed to appeal to LeBron James. It's never been seen before. It was shot in 2010. It was shot three years. After the HBO series ended so ambiguously with those people in the diner, it is Tony dead is the alive. What happens? Everybody was left wondering about Tony's fate. When the diner turned to black, but the existence of this short, I never heard of it. It was revealed on the rapper chuck D's podcast. 80 falcon was on. And she said, I can't believe this film didn't work. Not so much because of The Sopranos. I just thought it's New York. How does anybody not say no to New York for God's sake? But LeBron James did. So Jonathan hawk, who's directed a bunch of ESPN's 30 to 30 documentaries, great series. He did the ten minute short. And on that short guest included Robert De Niro, super Nick fan Spike Lee, and even Donald Trump, they all pitched in to get LeBron to come to Gotham City. And Edie says she does remember doing it and what's absolutely amazing to her and she didn't know who LeBron James even was. But they used to get all these requests all the time back then. And I remember when I had my talk show, we put out lists of people to wish me luck on my new talk show, The Rock did it, Trump was asked, he did it. So many New Yorkers were asked to do it and they responded. It was the hoot..

Hey, guys. Hey, Amy. I'm so happy that you all joined me. Let's start with where we ended. And that is four years of Donald Trump's presidency. And Claire, I want to start with you. By having you reflect on what you learned for the last four years what it told us about America what it told us and you about politics. Yeah. I mean, I think this is my reflections, kind of a mixture of politics and and being a journalist, but I think we we witnessed a pretty alarming acceleration of a trend, which is the politicization of fax. On. I think that's probably the biggest structural civic wounds that we're gonna have to deal with going forward, and it will take a long time to fix and Trump basically amplified, you know, a fox media ecosystem of conservative media ecosystem that had been pretty insidious for a while. Um, so I think it's a big problem to deal with. I mean, I will say it's not quite a silver lining, but I think a lot of Americans have become more attuned to. Maybe our feelings is the media or the country's feelings Narratively to convey The nuances of racism in America, and I think you know is the media and as the country we become a reflective about accepting the massive influence that we have on politics and people's actions. By the way, we framed stories and convey faxed so to me, that those are the big things that I'm left with. After Four years of Trump in office and five years of him, frankly dominating the national conversation, right? And he wrote a lot, too, in a recent story act, actually about The way in which personality has trumped policy. I mean, I think we've known that for a while, but it seems that Trump sort of made this complete right that the attachment The Republican Party. We've we in journalism have always attached to certain policies. And yet when you see people flying trump flags, it's pretty clear that it's No longer just about taxes and regulation, right? Very much. So I mean trump kind of his great insight politically Woz. He realized that people didn't really care all that much about the tax policies of Paul Ryan. They cared about. Um, you know, what I think of is a sort of anti. You know this contrarian strain that that a lot of Republicans you know, party voters were embracing because frankly, the GOP is a pretty white Non college educated party in a country that's getting more and more diverse, and I think that there are inherent fears among that population of you know what's my place in American society going forward and Trump's innovation was playing to those fears, playing to a contrarian. You know, uh, everyone is kind of against you theme, and it worked really well, and he had a big personality and he had a outside's place in the American mind for decades. And it was, you know, kind of Ah. Magic formula, and I think we're going to see that idea propagate even without Trump the idea that people don't care all that much about policy that there's a lot you could do by just playing too. You know, Ray stating or just contrarian, you know, against the American mainstream in order to win primary elections in particular in the Republican Party? Yeah, I had one Republican strategists say to me Not long ago that the issues mattered less and your successes. You know what you've been able to accomplish as someone either in office or in, you know, in your life, your career. Mattered, Uh, so much less than whether you were attached to Donald Trump told Lou. I want you to reflect on on this era as well, especially somebody who covered him in the White House. And covered his campaign and and whether you think that this was just sort of a one off. This is a unique person at this unique moment in time. Obviously, people are going to try to mimic him. But is that possible? Well, there's no one else like Donald Trump. There's no one else who will be able to really capture the Republican Party the way you did in such a short time with this force of personality with his willingness to be controversial, within many cases, his willingness to embrace racism and the extreme fringes of his party and welcome them into sort of this big tent that he was able to create between Traditional Republicans who do care about things like judges and tax cuts and more friends level people who maybe have not been attached to the Republican Party but who voted in large numbers in 2016 and in 2020. Um, you know, everything ranging from the Cuban on conspiracy there is to the extreme right wing militia members to white supremacists. He was able to accomplish together a coalition that was relatively large and helped him win 2016 and helped him to get even more votes in 2020. And there's no other politician at this point was able to bring together that kind of coalition. President. Trump also split the coalition of the Republican Party and the final days of his presidency by, you know, inspiring this insurrection, so it remains to be seen where the party is going to go from here, But he was able to do something that it's gonna be very difficult to replicate for any other Republican that does not have his background. His history and media his Aziz Wealth assed personal story. That he's been able to fashion over the course of several decades, and it'll be very difficult for anyone to replicate that. But I do think that several Republicans are now trying to do that, trying to build their own kind of comfy coalition to see if they can. Repeat what he did in 2016 and Nick talked. It was about what told you talked about the sort of splitting of the party after January 6 and the events of on Capitol Hill because, you know, it is clear that so many Republican members were shaken by what happened. Really upset with the president. We know that he left on Inauguration Day without elected officials or high ranking officials. Showing him off at Andrews Air Force Base, as he had hoped..
