"Wouldn't be Serena. I've been with some Venus, so thank you, Venus. And all this stepping away from the court by some of the sport's greatest stars is intensifying discussion here in the U.S. about the new up and coming players, including the young Francis tiafoe, who made it to the men's semifinals before losing to Carlos alcaraz. I'm going to come back and I will win this thing one day. I'm sorry, guys. Tiafoe is the first black American to reach the semifinals since tennis great Arthur Ashe did that more than 50 years ago. And tennis star and ESPN commentator Patrick McEnroe says they're just some amazing stories behind some of the younger players who will infuse new energy in the sport. And here he is with Bloomberg's Kathleen Hayes, let's listen in. Francis giacomo's tour is an incredible one. It's like an American fairytale, really, with his parents coming from Sierra Leone, his mom working two jobs as a nurse. His dad being the head of maintenance at a tennis facility, and that's how Francis and his twin brother happened to get into tennis. Just amazing, but also these guys play with so much with athleticism, style. And they love it. And the crowds love them. Well, I was fortunate enough to be in Arthur Ashe when tiafoe beat Nadal. That was quite a moment for a lot of people. Not only the thrill of seeing this young man that we've been watching just his acceleration in his development as a tennis player, right? And also for people kind of there in nostalgia about seeing Rafa Nadal, who's not done yet, present presumably, but see him lose not even get to the finals. I mean, it was a great performance by Frances and even though Nadal was absolute death. It was still pretty darn good. And tiafoe had a really play well and finish him off because the Dow is not going to give anything away. And remember Rafa hadn't lost a match in a major all year, he won the first two majors of the year in Australia and at the French Open. And then had to withdraw before his semifinal with Nick curios and Wimbledon because of the stomach injury. So because of the stomach injury all summer that he was nursing, he wasn't really at a 100%. But again, that being said, he's still Rafa. You still got to finish him off. And tiafoe did that and then he came back to beat a very tough Andre Rublev this Russian in the quarterfinals to make his move into the semifinals. Oh yeah, he's a dynamo for sure. So it is part of this new era about race losing Serena gaining tiafoe. Is the new era about tennis also spreading to more different kinds of people in the U.S. and globally. Well, definitely has done that on the women's side. I mean, you've saw the Serena and Venus effect with lots of young African American women who are now not that young, but you've obviously got the youngest one in coco Goff when you've had Madison keys and Sloane Stephens. And countless others. So I've seen a change even in the last ten years attending a lot of junior tennis tournaments as I deal with even in our tennis academy at Randall's island here, the McEnroe tennis academy. So I've seen the impact from all backgrounds of particularly young girls. And I hope that tiafoe will have some impact on young boys because I still think at least in the United States it's not as popular in the African American community. Tennis, it is for women. I think mostly because of Venus and Serena and also because in professional women's tennis, you can make a lot of money. So that attracts more people of all different backgrounds to the sport, whereas tennis for guys for young boys is not at the top of the list. But worldwide, you're actually right. I mean, players coming from all over the world is just amazing. The popularity of tennis has grown in other parts of the world. Especially in the last 20 years, which is why in some ways, the U.S., I think, fell behind in creating and helping develop top players. But it's good to see that that's on the women's side. We're doing very well. And on the men's side, we're starting to see an impact of tiafoe, Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, Opel, brooksby, corda. We got a good group of good, really good young American men, but TFO definitely has the most charismatic of all those players. The first one now to get through to a major semifinal. When I ask a couple other questions looking ahead, for example, will someone not named Nadal win the French Open in 2023? That's a great question, Kathleen. If some of it depends on the health of Nadal, he did look a little bit slower, which he actually admitted in his post match press conference. I'm going to say yes. I'm going to say yes, someone will. I mean, it's got to happen at some point, right? I mean, I think with alcaraz's development, Casper Ruud, who's great play core player, got to the finals last year losing to Nadal. He would be a guy. And sinner, sinner who lost to alcaraz can play on clay as well. So I think the younger generation not only are they coming, Kathleen, they're here. Yeah. You know, they're here. And I think that's sinner alcaraz match was really, to me, a generational shift in the way the game is played. The speed and the tempo that the match was played at was something I haven't seen before quite honestly. So whether one of those guys or someone else can put that together in a major at the French Open if

How about Novak Djokovic? She's in great shape. He wants to play he wanted to play in this open and he couldn't. So what are his prospects looking like to you? I think it's prospects are great. "And you think that wow, when the big three move on. This will be a guy. I mean, I'm a man's tour. They're all going to share titles, right? I mean, there's probably not going to be one that dominates like the big three. You got alker ass now. You got Nick. Remove the big three from Timmy. Nick curios would be a totally different type of player without those three, right? But hubie is one of those guys that I think when the big three move on, he could win three or four titles a year. If not, I mean, I think what you're going to have a list of about 12 to 15 that could win a slam. Yeah. And that list, you're going to have probably four that probably will win it, and then another four that really, really could win it very easily given the things that fall. And so within that, I think that's why it's going to be kind of fun to see who comes good who comes good this week or who comes good this slam or what's going on. So it's a fun time to be on the inside of it. I mean, everyone loves roger Rafa and Novak, but my goodness, they're not cute. Are they human? Are they still human? I mean, they're going to have to retire at some point. Exactly. And so then it's just let's see who was able to fill those shoes and who's comfortable filling those shoes. Then one of those things I do, like I start to look ahead to what's next is I remove the slams. And I look at the 1000s, right? I look at the 500s. And you say, who's winning those? And then you could say, okay, when these guys move out the way, and you be one of those, right? We talked about how. He's one of those, in Miami, Andy wells you want. He won Miami. Miami. So he was trying to look at those okay. He's one of those guys, right? Because you know, 1000, maybe they are not playing for one reason or another or don't make it there, whatever. They slip out of the draw. And those guys that emerged there are the ones that you add to that 12 to 15 list. Of Grand Slam contenders. Once they move on, and I think three years ago, maybe hubie wasn't on that list, but I think now. is, you don't want to play it inform hobie. You just don't. I mean, if he's informed and he's free, he's trying to get like a nickname for him. And I'm like, dude, you are just a menace. And he's like, man, this is kind of negative, but I'm saying, I'm saying it in the most loving way. Right. He's a menace to deal with. Yeah. You can cover like a cover like maybe no. Never that ish. On the cover, right? You know what I mean? Really, really good. Three very good, very good.

"Now the paper review on Bloomberg daybreak Europe. The news you need to know from today's papers. Let's take a look at the stories then making the front of today's newspapers. There's a focus on the Tory leadership context contest as you might expect, let's get straight to that then and Leigh Anne Garrett has a rundown for us. The Tory leadership race take us through at the coverage Leanne. Lots of them in the race aren't they Anna almost overcrowded but on the front of The Daily Telegraph this morning the foreign secretary Liz truss makes a pitch to return to court conservative values, so she's officially launches her leadership battle. In the article, she announces her candidacy signaling she will cut corporate tax reverse and national insurance rise and overhaul business rates. The move piles further pressure on the former Chancellor Rishi sunak promised tax cuts with most of his rivals to replace Boris Johnson vowing to unpick policies, he did adopt as the Chancellor so there we are. We've heard from Liz trus and what she hopes to do if she does get that role. That's a telegraph, the Financial Times meanwhile, reporting on efforts to speed up the process. Yeah, absolutely, so they want to make sure that we get a new prime minister in ASAP, so senior Conservative Party figures are plotting to rapidly thin out that field of candidates, 11, as we know of so far, to succeed Boris Johnson, and it's also reporting there's bitterness between rival camps and apparently there's a dossier attacking Rishi sunak in circulation. Now the process to elect the next leader will be agreed at a special meeting of the 1922 committee of back benches today, and they'll sort of lay out what they hope to achieve in this leadership battle, but one Tory MP close to the leadership race said, it's unlikely that MPs will demand candidates have the support of at least 10% of the party to be nominated, so lots of support they're needed if you want to go forward in this race. Okay, and Leigh Anne, I know what you really care about is the tennis. Yeah, really care about it. The cause of inflation has been this historic pandemic, which is upended life in so many different ways, in particularly his upended America supply chains. We've given Weston on Bloomberg radio. Coming up this hour, dealing with crime in the Big Apple. I talk with former New York police commissioner Bill Bratton about the surge in gun violence and what can be done about it. And we'll talk with famed pollster Frank luntz about how Americans are responding on abortion and guns, and the possible political consequences. Plus, what prime minister Boris Johnson is stepping down could mean for British policy with former British ambassador to the United States and the European Union, lord Kim Derek. And U.S. employers added more jobs in June than forecast and the unemployment rate held near a 5 decade low, signaling strong demand and a tight labor market. For The White House reaction to the numbers I spoke with former director of the national economic council, gene sperling. But first, former prime minister Shinzo Abe, Japan's longest serving leader and a figure of enduring influence died after being shot at a campaign event in an attack that shocked a nation where political violence and guns are rare. For reaction, I spoke to Glenn Fukushima, senior fellow at the center for American progress. Mister Fukushima served as deputy United States trade representative for Japan and China under president Clinton. I was having lunch and heard the news, the former prime minister Abe was shot. And they caught the shooter and the former prime minister died of lack of basically blood. And it's a disgruntled former employee of the Japan self defense force. And he wanted to actually kill the former prime minister using a bomb, but apparently he concluded that the bomb was not going to do the job. So he made a handmade pistol. And he fired two shots, and I think the first shot missed, but the second shot hit the prime minister in the neck and the chest. And it resulted in his death. So it was a real shock in Japan, especially because Japan has one of the strictest gun control policy world. And so this was a handmade gun that this former self defense force person made. You know, Japan and its economy so well. Give us your sense of abenomics. What is left of it? So as you know, had three parts, three components to it. The three arrows, the first arrow was easing monetary policy with the bank of Japan, the second was aggressive fiscal stimulus, and the third was economic instructor reform to promote growth. I think most economists would say that on the first and second counts at abenomics had its effect. And for instance, the yen went from, I think, something like ¥75 to about a 120 or a ¥130, weakening the yen and promoting Japanese exports for one. Also, the stock price in Japan went up considerably. But in terms of the long-term sustained growth and structural reform, that's the third arrow where there was much left undone. So I think the mix, there's a mixture assessment of the results of our dynamics. I know that although he did step down for health reasons as I recall, he remained the leader of the largest LDP faction in the diet. He was presumably very influential. Do you anticipate a shift in economic policy? Maybe even monetary policy is a result of his departure. Well, the current prime minister and prime minister shida is someone who was the foreign minister for more than four years for prime minister Abe. So I think the economic policies are not going to differ significantly. Although the current prime minister prime minister is probably more concerned about economic inequality than former prime minister Abe. And so during the campaign to become the prime

"Today is now putting their hat in the ring to become the new Tory leader and British prime minister. This is Bloomberg Now the paper review on Bloomberg daybreak Europe. The news you need to know from today's papers. Well, let's take a look at what's making this morning's newspaper front pages and of course it's all Boris Johnson's resignation, the telegraph leads with the concerns of some senior conservatives that not leaving dining street immediately leaves the country in a state of paralysis in the times Johnson throws in the town as the headline quoting his words when the herd moves, it moves and the headline and the metro leave means leave echoing those words of Theresa May on Brexit, of course, as demands grow for Boris Johnson to go now rather than wait for a successor to be elected, while the anger and is here with these stories and more Leon let's start with the telegraph and some unhappy Tory MPs. Yeah, indeed, I think a state of paralysis is a really strong line and if you go into the newspaper a little bit more the article, the government will be left in paralysis for months if Boris Johnson stays in Downing Street until his successor is chosen and this is according to senior Tory MPs who want Boris Johnson to leave immediately chori cheese believe the process could take until the autumn and calls including from John Major who was a former prime minister mounted for Johnson to depart straight away and hand over power to a caretaker. Some of these concerns are, it comes as the country faces a wave of public sector strikes over pay and travel chaos this summer and also as we see in inflation hits a 40 year high and lots of people are struggling with the cost of living crisis. So is it a time to be left in limbo with no government? Yeah, well or less are kind of certainly no prime minister anyway. There's a story in The Guardian there this morning about the attitude now in Europe in Dublin and Brussels given Boris Johnson in the Northern Ireland protocol. Yeah, indica Caroline. This is quite interesting because we've had different reactions, haven't we? We heard from a Vladimir zelensky from Ukraine who Boris Johnson has held regular phone calls with, and he was extremely sad to see the prime minister go, but it's not so much the case as, you know, relations between the UK and EU hit a really historic low point under Boris Johnson's premiership and islands, leader michal Martin, expressed personal sympathy to Johnson, but use a moment to call on the government to respect international law and the post Brexit deal on Northern Ireland. Yeah, of course, will a new leader really reshape that relationship or not. Also, actually at the back of the newspapers this morning, another story of interest away from the politics, Wimbledon. It's only because it's quite a big event for London, isn't it? And that's where we all live. So for the UK. Well, not the whole world, but as three in the studio, Rafa Nadal has withdrawn from Wimbledon ahead of his semifinal clash against Nick curios. Now this follows an abdominal injury, we did see him struggling with that in his quarterfinal with Taylor Fritz, he ended up coming to win that, but he was two sets down, had to have a medical timeout came back and had lots of tape on his abdominal muscle, and what this does is now gives Nick curios a free ticket into the Grand Slam final. So this will be his first singles final ever, and I also just want to bring in that Britain's Cameron norrie is going to be playing Novak Djokovic today to reach the Wimbledon final world. That's if he wins. So lots happening on the tennis court in Wimbledon. Who is going to see that weekend finale of the male sinkholes championship at Wimbledon very interesting. Thank you so much, Lee and garand. So with all of our top stories and I'll look at the newspapers this morning. This is Bloomberg

With a Bloomberg sports update, I'm at mattson. This is Bloomberg intelligence, but Alex Steele and Paul Sweeney on Bloomberg radio. We'll be here each and every week at this time Tapping into Bloomberg intelligence analyst carving some 2000 companies in 130 industries worldwide. While many are talking about how for the back half of the year, earnings estimates are going to have to come down. Profit margins are going to have to come down. One company, though, that might stand out and not have to do that is Emerson Electric. Designs and manufacturers electronic and electrical equipment, software, systems, and services. And they're actually doing really well, despite their stock being hammered so far this year. Joining us now with more is Caro and Uber hard senior industry analyst for Bloomberg intelligence. All right, give me the reason why I should be powered up on Emerson. A couple of things. One, they are very energy exposed 23% of sales. Their biggest business, which has been lagging, two thirds of the company now has an opportunity to benefit from higher CAPEX. Number two, they're on their way to beating all their 2023 targets. They're ahead of schedule. They're already meeting the margin target for this business. The energy related business that's just coming, turning around. They have a record backlog, and they're about to complete a $650 million savings program. So there's a lot of upside in. They have a day and Analyst Day in November. They'll raise all their expectations and the financial targets. So talk to us about the cost side Karen. We hear about inflation impacting margins for companies across many, many industry verticals. Talk to us about Emerson and their outlook. Emerson had an activist come about three years ago to tell them to get their act together on costs. They went to the drawing board and are doing structural takeouts across the board and the company and actually started in 2019. And their margins have exceeded expectations and they're not done. So there was pressure to do that. They did it, and they're now seeing the benefits of that and they've got one more year to go. What are some going to be some of the extra catalysts we have to think about? Capital spending, particularly on the upstream side, is expected to be up over 20% this year and another 10% next year. That's big kicker for Emerson in the automated solutions business. I think both those numbers could be low because they've been under investing for a number of years. They'll also probably be some help on the refining side, but for them the upstream side right now is the most important. Secondly, they have record backlog in that business. And again, $6.4 billion backlog. And again, it's just started to turn. So there's a lot that becomes sales. It's a long cycle business. Everybody's very worried about the more short cycle stuff because of a recession. There's automated solutions is all CAPEX driven. It's not just energy, it's chemicals, it's other things, but that tends to hold up better in the early part of a downturn. And I think the numbers are too low. I looked at how much automated solutions grew in the last four energy CAPEX cycles, and that grew 16%, 13%, double digit, consensus right now, has that segment growing at about 7%. I went through different scenarios I used 13% as the mid range and I come up with a 9% above consensus EPS, and I think there's probably upside. So estimates are already starting to drift up, but I think they can drift up more. Talk to us about valuation Karen here. I'm looking at the stock, is that about 14% year to date, but that's outperforming the S&P 500, which is down a little bit more than 20%. How does valuation look here? Emerson is underperformed on a three and a 5 year, and this is the first year they've actually outperformed. And I think some of that is people saying, wait a minute, they're in the right, they're in the automated solutions is in the sweet spot. It's time for them to turn. This new CEO is really executing. So you're starting to see people warm up to it. Energy is nothing if it's not cyclical. And I understand that this time structurally we may be in a different place with energy. "In my mind, we have just witnessed probably the greatest Australian open in the past decade. We saw ash bar to become the first Australian woman in over 43 years to win the Australian open. We all know how hard it is to perform your home country. That 43 year drought is a testament to how hard it is for great Aussie women to win there. And as Barty has done it. And she done it. She did it with class. She did without dropping a set. Very dominant. We saw Rafa Nadal. Make history. We all knew that with Novak Djokovic not playing at the Australian open, that it was a great chance for Rafa to break the tide get 21. And then, who knows to spread the lead at the French Open and get 22? We saw Daniel Medvedev, be a two sets to love three two serving 40 love. This will be a match that he remembers for the rest of his life. He was a spoiler, Novak Djokovic, when he was trying to get his 21st. And he was probably a point away from being a spoiler to Rafa and didn't quite get it done. Talk about a guy with a bright future and a guy with his style. He can reproduce this level of play in this type of result over and over again because he doesn't make many errors. He doesn't play very offensive. The style of Tennessee plays makes it easy for him to perform at this level for the next ten years. And I think he will be the next great champion. And probably the FrontRunner amends tenants for the next ten years. What do we think about Nikki Rios and tenacity Kaka kakas? Have we ever seen a dedicated single session ticket and stadium be sold out for a doubles final? I don't think even the Bryan brothers sold out an entire stadium with a single session ticket for any of the doubles finals. Who knows? Maybe this is the start of the Nick curios that we all want to see. One that's a little bit more attached to the win. One that's a little bit more serious when it's time to be serious, flashy when it's time to be flashy and really just the great champion we know he could be. We all know Nick is probably first or second best player on tour. We want to see more of him on TV. And let me tell you, winning a doubles Grand Slam might be small to some. But winning a singles Grand Slam with doubles Grand Slam or a mixed Grand Slam is a big deal no matter which of the three you get. So congratulations to those boys. This week, we've got a special guest. Peter Levin. This is an experience trying to director who's been fighting for years to keep tournaments in America and create new tournaments. He's a longtime TD at the Atlanta open. And the new timer director at the Dallas open..

"Minimum distribution that you have to do when you hit the age of 72. Are there certain accounts that we're talking about having to take money from? Yeah, That's where there's a lot of confusing, Joanie 8 72 are older. Now you required to take out the minimum distribution and that you have to continue doing that every year. It's a little more that you're required to withdraw as you get older, but the account you need to withdraw from. It's basically accounts that have been deferring the taxes, which would be traditional IRAs, previous employer. For one case, you're not required to withdraw from a Roth IRA because there's no tax revenue for the Irish for the Roth IRA, so they don't really care. And also, many people still work at age 72 or older. And if you have a current employer for man Cave retirement plan, you're not forced to withdraw from that, right. There's the money minute.
