"NHTSA dot gov slash the right seat, brought to you by the national highway traffic safety administration of the act council. On the latest edition of the tape podcast, a fed roundtable with Neil Grossman, Priya mizra and Danielle dimartino booth. Some of the frustration of the fed, I think, remains next year because we're going to look for the fed to eat and I think they're going to struggle to ease with inflation still high next year. Speaking of frustration with the fed, let me bring in Neil Grossman here. And first, let me say, you got to differentiate between how you feel about the fed what the fed should be doing in your take and what you expect the fed actually to do. Very fed up by the way. And in a couple of things. First of all, as I don't think they've been hawkish, they barely done anything in the way they should have, because I call it, as you know, infinitesimal incrementalism. They haven't even done one Volker yet as far as I'm concerned. Paul Volcker raised rates 4% intermediate on a weekend. That would have been something. And I'm sorry for you, but they don't haven't done quantitative tightening either. Letting something slowly drip drip away after they bought a 130 billion a month for ten years is not tightening. So I mean, yes, there are effects, but to be honest with you, I would stop tightening now and announce this afternoon that I'm going to start selling bonds at a clip of 50 to a 100 billion a month. That would be effective per se. Now, what are they going to do or not? I'm not going to disagree too much. Other than I think the thing you need to watch or consider is a liquidity. I'm going to push back as hard as I possibly can about quantitative tightening not taking place. Now, there's something called the employee retention credit in the 9 months through November. It injected a 120 plus $1 billion into the economy, so there is still stimulus money

"That is there, and that is like just baked in, whether it's a logo or it's a slogan or it's submission statement or it's a cataclysm or whatever you want to call it. I call it the one commandment, right? Which is your moral differentiation from society at large. That tells you, okay, studies large has gotten something wrong. We're going to get it right. And to get it right, we're going to need to shape the physical world. So you use bits to come to consensus. And you say, this group is now aligned. We need self-driving. Why? Because the current NHTSA is an abomination. The current thing of tens of thousands of automobile deaths here is an abomination. We have the technology to fix it. We can't just retrofit the roads necessarily. Why? Because it's like trying to send maybe electrical power over a water line. Okay, the current roads were not built for self-driving. If you built a town for self-driving, it would look totally different. You would have the roads would have sensors instrumented there. They might be segregated farther away from human traffic you wouldn't have like human crossings of the roads. All kinds of things, you can engineer your way out of the problem where you just assume the road is completely self-driving. Everything changes in terms of an engineering thing. You're not trying to send electoral power over waterline. That's one of the reasons self-driving is so hard is you have to assume all of this legacy baggage there. If you could take that away, it could be easy. And in fact, we know this to be the case because guys like Rio tinto, this is a huge mining conglomerate, even as far back as like 2013 on closed roads on private mines. They were running when they're the only ones who are running the miners and trucks. They just run them all from Perth in Australia. They can run the mine remotely. Okay, and move the things around. Because there's no one else on the road, or because the private road where they know all the cars on it, right? This is a great example of self-driving car zone. You have this moral commitment you will align people with their bits. You get that alignment. And then they go and take physical territory, and they just relentlessly negotiate with enough governments until they get a sanctuary city or they get a D harmonized zone. And they don't just replace it with nothing to replace it with a new regulatory paradigm. One clarifying question. So when you say that they develop their own regulatory framework, is that just using the example of self-driving is that just around self-driving or is the intention that they regulate or re regulate everything from education to taxes, et cetera, or does it embedded? Right, so the one commandment concept is, I think it's a useful thing in the book. It's actually one of the more important things in the book. So I'll get the short version in the long version. The short version is you can not change everything society at once. But you can also not give up completely on societal change. So just like a startup sets out to fix one thing in the market, a startup society sets out to fix one moral feeling of society.

You'll listen to Bloomberg opinion, I'm Ronnie Quinn As the fed prepares for the unemployment rate to go up as part of its campaign detain inflation, part of the fed's hope is that labor force participation rises. In other words, that people previously not even looking will become part of the labor force again. That would push the unemployment rate higher for sure, but it wouldn't push people currently in jobs out of jobs, so less painful pain perhaps. To put it in context, labor force participation was at or above 63 before the pandemic. It slowed to 60 as the pandemic hit, it's now back up to 62.4. Bloomberg opinion columnist, Justin Fox, has been looking at various cohorts and finding some data that might surprise. So Justin, there's a belief out there that through the pandemic people 55 and over left the workforce in droves and that that was exacerbating a trend already 15 years in the making, but it turns out that that premise is actually false. Tell us more. It's partly just that I'm 58 years old. And when I look at these reports about, oh, 55 and older labor force participation fell a lot during the pandemic and is still actually kind of falling while most other groups have gone back. And then I look at people my own age that I know, but also just look at the statistics for the 55 to 59 age group, it's actually up. Over the course of the pandemic. And so that just caused me to start looking a little more into it. And basically, people in their late 50s are actually slightly higher labor force participation than before the pandemic. Those in their early 60s, it's a little lower, but for the people above 65, there's been real drop. That drop has been smaller in percentage terms than the 1.7 percentage point drop in overall 55 and older labor force participation, which just seems weird. So people in their early 70s have seen a smaller labor force participation dropped in the overall 55 and older. And what it is is this thing that the economists call composition effects, it's just that within the 55 and older age group, the age distribution is changing. What it is is there's the baby boomers. And well, I'm one of them too, but just barely. And the baby boomers are simply a bunch of years where birth rates were higher than before or after. And so the oldest of the baby boomers are turning 58 this year. So when you look at the overall 55 and older age group, it's starting to be filled at the young end by members of generation X and there aren't as many of them. Now, in general, after about age 40, the older you get, the less likely you are in the labor force. So as that happens, if you have a big group of people now aging into their 60s and 70s and this smaller group of people aging into their late 50s, that just sort of automatically is going to cause participation rates to decline even if rates of every age group within there is not declining at all. So you have to be very careful when you look at the data before you pull assumptions out of it and say, oh, everyone over 55 just decided that life should be different after COVID. It's not like that at all. Early on, early retirement was this phrase for it. And when you looked at it, retirement wasn't up for people under 65. It was up for people over 65 and maybe they were retiring earlier than they had planned to because they're definitely a leap for people in their late 60s and early 70s aren't that many of them working, but the numbers have been going up for a long time. So yeah, there's definitely been a drop, but it's concentrated among people over 65 years old. You know, a, it's kind of understandable COVID is really dangerous if you're over 65. And so not exactly wanting to go into the office or I mean, right before the pandemic, McDonald's was starting to recruit senior citizens to come work. And maybe not a great idea. A lot of customer facing activity. So it's not that there hasn't been any decline. And I actually, after writing this piece, I did an age adjusted version and basically half of the decline in 55 and older labor force participation is an actual decline in half is this statistical composition effect. You did find that there are two groups for whom participation has declined substantially and they may not be the ones that we would assume. Right, there are two groups under age 60 who have seen labor force participation decline from before the pandemic. And it's people in their early 20s and in their late 30s. So the early 20s, you could maybe see, so the pandemic is not exactly a time to go looking, it's very difficult to interview, you don't even know where you really wanted. You don't know what businesses are going to be around after the pandemic. But a lot of people also

"Man, this is such a love hate situation for me. I know. This is getting this is getting reality TV kind of level of I can understand for me and let's get into this. I can understand for me, Keith, why GM is doing what they're doing and I don't know that I have much of an issue with it considering the number. All right. So let's get into it. Okay. Apparently, GM has asked some of their Cadillac lyric reservation holders to sign a non disclosure agreement. Define some. I think it was around 20 people, yes, out of all of their reservations. And they've exchanged for that NDA. They get $5500 discount. Right. And that's it. The NBA says they can't talk to anybody outside of GM about their experience. That is correct. Okay. Yeah. Now let's go back to what you were saying. Which is you don't have a problem with this per se. I'm not trying to put words in your mouth. Just right, carry on. Right. I don't have a problem with this per se. Only in the sense and I believe that there may be some language within the NDA that here's who has the bigger problem. The NHTSA has the bigger problem because they fear that they will not be getting adequate information in regards to potential safety issues that might be going on with these vehicles. But as long as there's language within those NDAs that allows the NHTSA and I think the GM needs to think about this that allows them to basically have some oversight over the NDA, what's in the agreement and what information can and can not go out. I think GM is wise not to let their technology get out there. This is sort of like what Keith and I have been saying for the longest time, most automakers are doing live polling with these vehicles. Right.

"In it. The NHTSA is filing for these complaints that have come their way in regards to the engine failures. And we're going to talk about both reasons. 25,538 Broncos. Potentially have catastrophic engine failure. Let me just give that to you guys again. 25,000, 538. That's a lot. We're not talking about a bad fuel pump. We're not talking about a battery connector issue. We're talking about complete catastrophic engine. You're going to have to replace the whole engine. Right. Absolutely. And it happens. And the top half, right? You're going to have to replace the whole thing. Yeah, because catastrophic traffic failure basically if you tag of Alva or outbreaks or whatever it goes through the block and the next thing you know, it's just boom you're done. You're completely destroying the whole engine. There will probably be some salvageable components there and potentially maybe the head or the block. But a lot of times when you have a catastrophic failure like that, man, especially a turbocharged application. You're going to pay their mechanics to take these things apart and salvage parts. They're going to have them send the bad ones. They're going to replace them in a replacement. They're going to drop in a replacement engine. That's why NHTSA is involved in this and they're filing. They're under Ford is under investigation right now is the way I understand it. Now, when this the first recall or the first notion of this came about, you had vehicles that were failing anywhere from 900 miles, brand new, up to around say 9000 miles. That's the range. You know where between, say, a 1010 thousand miles, they were having engine failures. And Ford basically said that they located the problem that they were utilizing cheaper suboptimal valves that were acquired from a new supplier that apparently didn't properly validate the product. Well, let's just go back to this one for a second. Right. You have a supply chain issues. You have vendor a supplier a supplier B supplier C we just covered this with RJ and rivian and him having to call three or four different suppliers and going hey supplier a's giving me 20,000, what can you guys get surely? You guys can give me 20 to 25,000. Right. When you get to the supplier D or C or D, there's a reason those are I'm quoting you here, Jay. There's a reason those are supplier C and D and not a or B and when you get down to that level of supply chain, you better bring your 18 quality control department in and inspect that product..

So I just want to stick attack in this because I have a question about this when you're done with the details. So they said also that rivian revealed it had learned of the defect through a customer satisfaction campaign that aimed at getting their vehicles where they need to be goes back to what I said earlier, how is rivian going to deal with these problems as they arise or as they find them. People who have taken ownership of their vehicles, which luckily for rivian at this point, there's not a ton of them out there, so they're recall campaigns, they're not going to be that big at the moment. So I don't know that it's on a scale, it's not a real good test, but just the actual, the act of acting upon the problem and taking care of it for the customer. It does appear that they are willing to step up and take care of these problems. Now, some of the customers, they said, because there is a lack of adhesive, they explain that a lack of the hood mastic adhesive does not appropriately bond the outer and intersections of this hood. As a result, their customers that have already taken ownership are experiencing annoying, fluttering noises at speeds of more than 70 miles an hour and to resolve it. They'll have to remove the hood liner, it'll have to be inspected in detail. And then a set of pass they will apply adhesive wherever it is necessary to resolve this problem. It's not a safety issue. It's probably more of a nuisance and annoying problem. But the fact that NHTSA caught it as well and said, hey man, you really need to take a look at this. So there you go. Now you had a question on that. Go ahead. Yeah, so I have a feeling I might learn something here. Stay tuned, everybody. So the issues on a hood liner, right? It's actually not the hood liner. It's actually where the outer shell of the stamp steel and the inner shell, what they do is they they seal them together, you'll see weld points, but some of them are just done by this specific type of a bonding and he's on certain spots. So it looks like a well, but it's actually adhesive. On some of these to keep the water out maybe or to keep the air out of it. That's where this at. It's actually not the underpinning. It's the structure of the shell, the shell itself, being able to get to the underside. Does that make sense? Okay. Yes, yeah, okay. Stars. Yeah. Now, it does look like these are one T's have a hood liner. I'm looking at a picture. They do right now. They do, you'd have to remove to get to it to look at it, yes. The purpose of a hood liner, traditionally, is to dampen noise, right? Insulation, noise, yes. Yes, okay. Right? Keep dust down. It does gets in it. It can keep some dust. That's right. That's right. Why are we worried about noise? What's annoying to people? I mean, that's what kind of noise is a truck with no engine in the.

"I i think that's a good I mean you shrink as you get older. I think okay. Why do you shrink. I don't know we'll have to find out and tell everybody some of the other key. Parts of the post two thousand ten is The nhtsa started assigning. A single overall safety score from frontside and rollover with front Having the heaviest weight of that overall score They start started. Putting in these additional measures for For neck extension chest deflections and femur and. I think they didn't have that before. Which is kind of horrifying right What else i think. They added the poll test running into polls. It's a big one to one of the things that they did. That really changed. Things is that rather than just getting an absolute score Based on their criteria they sorted pitting cars against one another to Yeah that's a. That's a huge one. That was an enormous change. Because now they're like okay. You want to be the best. Will you got to be the best in the industry. You can't just be like you know. Yes we're all gonna meet this and that was one reason why those two thousand ten changes were made in one reason why the ihs keeps changing its tests. They're not like like anytime they they they create a new test or they create a new standard. All of the automakers rushed to meet that In some of the may already meet it or come close. They won't have to do too much to meet those higher seniors because they're already over designing beyond what we're the requirements before but the rest of the industry though if you don't know by now just from like our pinto episode alone. Auto industry is really lazy. Sometimes when it comes to over designing They will sometimes meet minimum requirements. Even win they're exceeding minimum requirements. And this is a good example of that because the nhtsa when they're doing crash tests they're basically just doing it for fun. This is again not..

"Aren't so pretty. Nice day for tesla stock today shaking off some of the red from earlier this week. Finishing up three and a half percent to six hundred eighty dollars ninety nine cents comparatively. The nasdaq was down nine. Tenths of a percent most of that drop happening in the last hour. Two hours of trading after the fed minutes came out so the minutes from the federal reserve's meeting today indicating that they are considering tapering off their monthly asset purchases sometime in the near term but obviously those things can and often do change so the market reacting to that towards the end of trading and tesla got pulled down a bit as well so pretty strong day for automakers just across the board today so we ejected on this yesterday but will check in again today probably for the last time this week but weekday performance so far tussles down about four percent a little bit less than four percent so far and actually now doing about a half a percent to full percentage point better than gm. Ford's atlanta's volkswagen and neo so despite all the coverage of the knits investigation. If you'd just slept through the first few days of the week which is actually not a bad strategy for an investor and you just looked at automaker performances we to date. You'd have no idea that there was investigation on tesla. And you'd probably say oh tesla's having a pretty good week relative to others so markets down today tesla up and that was despite reports that two. Us senators are currently urging the federal trade commission to open a probe into whether or not tesla used deceptive marketing practices involving drivers systems features which tesla of course calls autopilots and full. Tesla Q2 Production and Delivery Forecast

"We're here today. We're going to go through a second quarter delivery and production forecasts ahead of quarter end which ends tomorrow and then we should get tussles numbers sometime on friday as my expectation may slip into saturday but based on the last few quarters think that'll happen probably friday morning So obviously be back to report on that but today was going to go through what i expect my actual forecast for this quarter based on the information that we have so far. We also have a little bit of other news. So we'll hit that up after the end of the forecast we'll start off here with tesla's stock out before we get into that if you are an audio only listener This is spreadsheet intensive so up at the link down to the video in the show notes. I would recommend that for this right so tussle stock today Fading off a little bit to finish down one point one percent to six hundred eighty dollars. Seventy six cents. That compared to the nasdaq which was slightly positive on the day finishing up about two tenths of a percent so before we get into deliveries. Let's look at what wall street is currently expecting else. Like that is about one hundred ninety eight thousand three hundred vehicles to be delivered in q two. This is as of june twenty fifth from an investor's dot com article. Uh so that's the best source. I have right now for a factset consensus before we you. My actual spreadsheet though just a reminder attended focus mostly on production rather than deliveries. These cars are gonna get delivered eventually so to me production as key. Not how many of those vehicles that tesla produce they're actually able to deliver So we can send most of the time talking about production but i will talk about deliveries as well. So let me flip over to excel here and we can just orient people with how this she set up by now. Most people are familiar about. We basically have periods of time here in the rose. Different sections of Production here in the columns so total fremont shanghai and then we have it split out by sort of rates so weekly rates daily rates and then some breakdowns over here of just individual factories and their weekly rates

Tesla Cybertruck 'Armor Glass' and UI Patents Reveal Exciting Features

"Yesterday the us patent office released patent application documents filed by tesla in relation to the cyber truck user interface and some other details about fifty pages of text an a series of twenty drawings or so. And there's some interesting things buried in here so again. These drawings are showing the user interface and the first thing that jumps out if we look at any of these is the six hundred. Ten mile range showed on the way on the right there. And that's the range that is displayed on the majority of these images of course ever since the truck unveiling tesla has listed the top and range for the cyber shock as five hundred miles. Plus but hundred ten that would be quite the plus similarly as we've been talking about with the f. One fifty lightning unveiling the payload for the cyber chalk has been listed fourteen thousand pounds plus one of the other eu i- images here shows the cyber truck pulling a trailer it lists the payload capacity has twenty thousand pounds now. Of course we've got no way of knowing if these are gonna actually end up being a specs but make you wonder why they would show up in the patent application if these numbers weren't in the ballpark of something that tesla was testing or targeting now to be fair these due to some extent look like placeholder values. We can see that on this payloads green. You can see to pay load and it still six hundred ten miles of range. I think we can be confident that that is not realistic. And in a real scenario tesla would likely be adjusting. The range display their based on the pilot. So it doesn't negate these things being interesting but it just shows that tesla's probably not taking a screen grab from a final interface with the final range number and payload things like that with those caveats in mind that might provide some interesting insight on that trailer so seen an image on tesla's site of the truck hauling this sort of sabir truck ask looking trailer from another one of these you i- images. Evt's and you just think about because we've had cars combustion costs for hundred years. You don't think i'm driving. I'm putting my family and my baby inside a car which is carrying around litas. Some gallons of very high highly combustible liquid blows up. I mean when you look at the fire department and the fire brigade stats on cough. Is they've really coleman. And so when there's an incident of course it makes the news because they're so rat but normal 'cause burned down all the time. So i feel very safe driving a navy if you're drive already but it's really good news. The nhtsa has created an initiative to look at the kind of coordinated analysis of data investigations. When there's a crash an anon- crash event and look at diagnostics and even cybersecurity as well. That's all very important. According to the website Techno codex this initiative nitsa that it will conduct investigations into safety related defects in vs and be a central point on battery safety. That's very very important. Lots of people are doing this. But i think it will give consumers more confidence.

Medically Unnecessary Surgeries on Intersex Children Could End

"Next story from the times and it's about intersex so surgery to alter the reproductive organs of children. Her born intersex could be stopped. A leaked paper shows in draft proposals by. Nhtsa england genital go nadal surgery for children with differences in sex development which is called. Dsp would not go ahead until children consent for themselves charities. Impatience described it as courageous and a huge step. Forwards disd which is also known as intersex a group of rare conditions involving genes hormones and reproductive organs including genitals. A child may have a male sex chromosomes but have reproductive organs genitals. That may look different from usual. Dsp families the charity said surgeries worked out of parental anxiety and making genitals pit. Typical parents and doctors saw the problem would go away but the never went away. This is a fascinating piece of news. Because when i have spoken to intersex people one of the things that in the people have spoken to. And it's obviously a complicated issue. I don't speak on anyone's behalf. A lot of the the way that the medical profession has dealt with people who are into sex in recent history has been to try and change that body or their genitals to match some kind of classic idea of what male female is and sometimes that can later be discovered to go against the gender that person feels they are and as we all know. The compensation opens up more and more. The gender is a spectrum. And you you don't have to conform to the gender binary and the surgery is. What's doing that particularly at an age before. Somebody has any consent because this is happening when babies. I think seventy questions not by this. I want to know what you think listeners. But what's coming to my mind is. The increasingly is gender. Something you have to choose a tool and you know a parental anxieties around gender orphan informing stuff that's really really tricky and actually needs to come from the person who who is going through the actual thing so feels like a good step forwards from what i've heard from intersex people that i've spoken to that. They want a lot more agency around not having to get surgery and things to subscribe to old dusty ideas of what gender is so that feels like a really good step forwards

'Complacent' UK draws global criticism for Covid-19 response

"I don't know what St elect means. Presumably we all live and normal types staying away to danger but if I see you message Novas steel air and you see to me but does that mean I stay at home or no? I can't give you a straight answer to that. Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon isn't the only one with criticisms of the leadership in Westminster Increasingly. Ridden is under international scrutiny. In the confused messaging is just the start. Reaction has been pretty confused to this. Emma Duncan is Britain editor so the new slogan is stay alert. The old slogan was stay at home and when you told people to stay at home they knew what to do when you tell people to stay alert. They don't really know what that means. They can't see this fire so they're not really clear what they're staying alert four there's been some actual confusion from the government about some of the loosening. Say for instance. The government was originally sang. The loosening was going to happen two days ago and then that was corrected to happening today. The foreign secretary when describing the restrictions. Goaty wrong about who you could meet and broadly speaking there is kind of worry about how people are supposed to get back to work even if they work safely when schools are still not open. That's not part of this stage of the loosening of lock Dan so there are a lot of questions at there and a lot of criticism particularly from the labor unions. And this isn't the first time the government has come under fire for confused policies or confused communications. Yeah that's absolutely right. There's a lot of criticism of the fact that the government started on a testing program early in March and then discontinued that early to start it up again too late and struggling to get to the position that other countries are in and there's been a lot of criticism of the fact that that has not been enough personal protective equipment particularly for people working in the health services and generally people in vulnerable jobs. And what is the public mate of all this? I mean the prime minister had his own. Cogan scare which calmed the criticism for time. But but broadly what to Britain's think now well? There was a huge band since support for Boris Johnson early on in March and April his popularity rating swords and. That's been true of some other leaders to but since late April they've been sliding again and that's really because of this perception that the government messed up early on because people don't really know what they're supposed to be doing so it's quite interesting is looking at the polls about how. Britain's think that the government has dealt with this crisis compared to other countries and basically Britain's think that we have messed up here. They think that we've done worse than anywhere on the European mainland worse than the Asian countries. And the only country that Britain's generally think they've performed better than is America will butts what's people within Britain think about Britain's response when looking abroad. What about abroad looking at Britain? Do we have a sense for how what's happening here has been perceived? Yes we do and this crisis is not doing burdens international reputation and he goods among Asians flurry on social media from worried parents whose children are studying in Britain. Who wanted to pull them out quickly and on the European mainland particularly web. Britain's reputation is not high at the moment because of Brexit and the handling of the brexit negotiations is been huge amount of unfavorable comments. About this government's failure. There was a German column. That caught my attention saying that. Boris Johnson going into intensive care a metaphor for the nation as a whole entire nation was in intensive care on ventilation and self isolating Which was what Brexit was if you look in America among newspapers like The Washington Post and New York Times there's also quite a bit of criticism so Britain which likes to think of itself as a country with high standing in the world is slipping pretty sharply as a result of its handling of this crisis. And so you genuinely believe goes beyond a bit of editorializing abroad and Britain's general tendency toward self-deprecation chattering classes certainly do have a tendency towards self deprecation. Decline is is a very popular pastime in this country. But we aren't seeing a stamp change in how birth news being talked about and this is feeding into some other difficulties. The country's having so the brexit negotiations are not going to a well it looks increasingly as they. Britain is going to crash out of your with is a deal at the end of the year and has started trade tooks with America. But there's going to be very difficult because there are some tricky issues involved for instance The NHS America wants to be able to sell it. Services and goods to the NHS Burton is very protective increasingly protective about the NHTSA. Having that as part of a trade deal will be tricky. And there's increasing tension between Britain and China and that's not unique to Britain obviously as a lot of criticism of China all over the world that the moment bodies particularly shop in Britain weather's as a faction of the Tory party that is increasingly critical of China and so Britain is looking a little lonelier than it would like to at the moment will just it. I wonder how much that description of the current world order has been changed than by Britain's response to go with nineteen what I think the response does and the reactions to Burton's response. It's made a little harder for Britain to do what it likes to do. In the old cliche punching above it wait Burton's punching below. Its weight at the moment. And that matters gang forwards birth news very keen on it soft power. It likes the idea that it has influence in the world when it comes to pushing agendas like human rights like climate change that it has a seat at the top table. It is listen to great a proportion than its. Gdp or Defense Forces might argue for and that really depends on reputation for competence and good governance and that reputation has taken a bit of an

Nuro’s R2 receives first autonomous vehicle exemption from the U.S. Department of Transportation

"For the first time ever the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has approved a plan for fully autonomous electric vehicles. On on the street neuro will be deploying five thousand vehicles with no human onboard. No controls no seats. I know side view mirrors. They were given a waiver to the normal safety requirements by the US. NHTSA now these. These vehicles are restricted into no more than twenty five miles per hour. They're short trips. They have to be on pre mapped neighborhood streets and they will be monitored remotely by humans who can take remote control role if necessary. These aren't the first. We've been talking about neuro if you've been following ahead of this game. People don't talk about neuro enough. They tested these in Scottsdale. Oh with grocery delivery for Kroger. They've tested them in Houston before. This is a big deal. The are one was the vehicle they were testing in the past. The are two will are two at the two. We'll roll out in Houston to deliver things like Domino's pizza and groceries from Walmart. Those are some of their partners. Public protests will begin there in the coming weeks so this is happening soon and neuro has agreed to greater government oversight in order to get this waiver and committed to community outreach to talk to the public about what their what their vehicles do how they'll act. Don't be surprised when you see him. It took three years for neuro to get this approval but if this was way more uber this would be your top headline all over the place. Why is neuro under the radar because it's not flashy? It's two former Google autonomous car engineers. So it's got a little bit a splash. But it's not flashy it's cars zor not sexy looking. They're they're little shuttle looking things they basically call them robots and that's what they are. They're they're very large robots and they're not bringing us. They're not taking passengers passengers. which would be the next big step? They're just delivering stuff. Is this the the thing that I thought of when when reading this is that are they a very very very tasty acquisition target because if you have a thing that is very rare air right that they have this approval to do stuff. They are moving at a speed that that nobody has seen granted they they decided to take the non on passenger route and that is likely why they're able to get this kind of This kind of approval I look at that and I say at at some point I mean are they going to be so valuable that they're unbeatable or is this just a natural pickup for but say Uber which of for example has a lot of problems on their hand currently because they are so passenger centric and drivers enter now. That's interesting does Uber. By would you want ought to buy them in order to get the good relationship with the NHTSA. That's possible Walmart certainly would be a potential acquisition. Provide You know because Walmart is already working with them and Walmart likes to do that. They like to work with you first and then if things work out maybe by you Amazon could certainly come in and snap them up and just added to the changing the the fact that we have so many different people that you could say. Oh my God. Obviously they would want to be in the in the in the neuro business. I think kind of spells out what you have correctly identified as the leaders advantage here for them and the fact that they aren't a splashy and it's only the very wise listeners of Daily News. Show that are going to be able to tell their friends about about how much neuro leads this. Raise the next time you hear someone say well. It's going to be a long time before they let these vehicles on the road without people in say it's already happening tapping in Houston right now. H town baby. Nope no people in them no passengers. That's the big thing you can get your Domino's pizza delivered by a robot in Houston so so

Could Your Next Car Say 'No' to Drunk Driving?

"In the United States alone. Thirty people die every day and drunk. Driving related crashes that equates to one person every forty eight minutes but simple technology to prevent and even possibly end drunk driving exists so why aren't carmakers required to implement it uh-huh new legislation in the United States aims to do just that to require all new cars be equipped with Alcohol Addiction Systems by two thousand twenty four the reduce impaired driving for everyone act of two thousand nineteen known as the riot act was introduced to Congress from both sides of the aisle by Senator Tom Udall of New Mexico and Rick. Scott out of Florida who co-sponsored the Senate bill and representative Debbie Dingle of Michigan in the House. Democrats and Republicans working together. The lawmakers believed the law could save seven thousand lives per year. We spoke by email with Ned. Adrian's Senator Udalls Communications Director. He said Udal saw the success. That ignition interlock. Technology had in reducing the number of alcohol related driving fatalities in New Mexico indices alcohol detection. Technology is a big part of the solution in preventing drunk drivers from. I'm getting behind the wheel. The Right Act doesn't just call for automakers to implement alcohol detection technology on their own. The bill also provides funding for research and development element of advanced alcohol detection software. The legislation will establish a pilot program fleet vehicles equipped with the software including those from federal state and private partners. That means the technology will be tested on vehicles before being mandated for consumers the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or NHTSA is also also partnering with Automobile Manufacturers to help develop detection systems that can be installed in vehicles the NHTSA will work with the private on motive coalition for traffic safety as well as directly with vehicle manufacturers suppliers and other interested parties including institutions of higher education expertise and automotive engineering to develop the technology not once the pilot program is underway results will initially be evaluated in the first twelve months and again every one hundred and eighty days the target eight for implementing the federally mandated. Technology in. All new vehicles will be no more than two years after the law is enacted as for how it will actually work. We can get some insight from current technology though that doesn't necessarily reflect the future an ignition interlock device or I I D- is essentially a breathalyzer connected to a car's ars ignition system once it's installed the car won't start until someone breathes into. Id with an alcohol. Free Breath. Drivers also can't disconnect the devices uses without damaging the vehicle. It's possible for a driver to trick these devices by having someone else provide the breath sample but the device is also demand rolling samples at regular intervals while the vehicle is in motion. Making it difficult for anyone other than the driver to comply and the statistics show that they work in May of Twenty nineteen mothers against drunk driving announced that in-car breathalyzers stop drivers who were drunk from starting their cars or three million times since two thousand six. That's that's when mad began pushing for ignition interlocks for every drunk driver mad collected. It's data from eleven ignition interlock manufacturers. The data found that. ID's stopped opt almost three hundred and forty eight thousand attempts by drivers with alcohol in their system. In two thousand eighteen alone lifesaver a provider of interlock devices and services says says on its website. That false positives are possible though a triggered by anything from mouthwash to fruit juice to pizza dough in that case a series of lockout periods are triggered before the driver can take another test anywhere from five minutes on up depending on the laws of the state if a rolling sample triggers a failure. The vehicle must be stopped as as soon as possible to pullover safely and failure on a subsequent test after a lockout period. Put the vehicle in a service mode where it must be taken to a service center to be reset that it's unclear whether the laws for federally mandated built in devices would use similar procedures. The Ride Act. Bill does state that the technology will automatically use the blood alcohol content cut off for the jurisdiction where the vehicle is being operated. However the bill does not specify whether the development team is working with existing assisting technology or what form the implementation will take? Also who would pay for all of this. Generally when drivers are required to install an aftermarket. I I D- After a Dui they pay the costs for installation monthly fees for the court mandated monitoring period and the removal fee. At the end of their sentence. These costs can easily add up to thousands of dollars which is not necessarily representative of the cost of the. ID itself since there are different suppliers of these ID's in different areas. Prices can vary and furthermore the monthly fee also includes a monitoring service that records the results of each test to report back to the court if necessary a lifesaver says their pricing is bound by the laws of the states in which they provide their services. It's unclear how. Or if the cost of these devices would be passed on consumers if they become mandated as part of car equipment though the text of Udal in Scott's proposal specifies that federal funding will help pay for the development costs the federal government has already dedicated about fifty million dollars to the project.
