MA Supreme Court Justice Supports Daughter's Basketball Dreams
"For some time now state Supreme Court justice has been preoccupied with what's happening in the court and on the court a basketball court WBZ's Carl Stevens spoke with marble head girls high school basketball player Maddy lui and her father justice David Lowy you're in your senior year you towards the end of your high school basketball career and every step of the way for many years your dad has been by your side and I just wonder what that has meant to you I think it's when everything is something that we've done together something that's made our relationship so strong in every time we're having a tough game or the other teams having a streak I can just look into the stands and now he's supporting me either way and it's not just at the games right right every Saturday we drive up to Topsfield and have a basketball lesson and then all through the fall and spring since I was about nine or ten years old driving to three hours to a few tournaments what is he like a game so focused if anyone comes the game doesn't talks until halftime is just completely tuned in your dad was telling me stories about how you guys together would listen to books right yeah can you talk to me about that so that's something we love to do we have the longer rise to a U. tournaments in I think my favorite book that we ever listen to was educated can you talk about the importance and I know this is kind of repetition of my first question but I'm looking for a little more out of the because we're talking about from the age of nine two how old are you now senator okay so those eight years he's been with you every step of the way mile after mile game after game what has that meant to you you're almost a young woman now what is that meant to you I think it's just it's taught me how important it is to have a support system in someone that you can count on and he's taught me so much taught me being having grace under pressure in big games taught me about a commitment to excellence saying that you can't just want to win on the night of the game but this time you have to want to win in the fall in the summer in the spring before the season you gonna miss him for sure all right dead no the same question I asked your daughter what has this relationship meant to you over the years well the best part about basketball is they get to spend time with my daughter the joy of it is to drive they are talking about the game and just having a chat about whatever comes up and the way home we dissect the game afterwards and then we just seamlessly have wonderful conversations so best part basketball is the time with her they tell me happy all the time a lover just the same way they should have it for another three pointer again she had five in a row I know how much work how much time your work takes I mean you redeem them you're working a lot and yet the amount of time you've devoted to your your daughter that's intense and I just wonder how and why you were able to make that time well family first and that the games in the corner in between games reading transcripts from reading briefs but we have a we have a great time and it there's always enough time for the family you can always get up a little earlier you can always stay up a little later you can always put a few more hours and but you family comes first and she's a senior she's gonna be graduating and moving out to the university of Virginia and I just wonder what your thoughts are about that well I'm thinking about getting a faculty position out there my thoughts are that you know she's been preparing for this moment or her whole life she's ready and that's part about being a parent is be proud when they're ready to go Maddie is we wrap this up I just wonder if you go back in your memory if there any favorite memories that you have of your dad at a basketball game I remember when I was nine or ten my dad made a mistake about the game time when I was playing up in Newbury park for a travel game I think the game is that one and we got there at ten in most kids would probably be screaming and yelling that they had to wake up extra early but we saw an open court and I think we shop around for one or two hours and then got lunch before the game and it ended up number one being an awesome day together number two for a fifth grader I think I shot the best ever had the basketball season for the marble had high school girls basketball team ended earlier this week when they lost in the

"Thursday afternoon. I went up to the pharmacy to pick something up and I notice in the distance a large plume of smoke, and I said to the gentleman who is standing behind me in line. I said excuse me, sir. Do you know what the smoke is related to? He said. Oh, yeah. There's a fire in Newbury park, which a lot. If some of your listeners are not aware Newbury park is kind of the far western end of what they call the canal valley. So the western part of Calabasas is in the valley than gray hills Westlake village Thousand Oaks Newbury park, it's a it's a bedroom communities lovely homes, just a good suburban schools and just it's it's just it's been a wonderful place for us to live. And so when I heard that the fire. Fires were in Newbury park. I wasn't too alarmed because that's quite far away. He would literally take you fifteen minutes to drive from where I live to get to Newbury park. So I went to bed that night, not even thinking there was a problem. But sure enough that four A m the phone started vibrating, it was urgent and it was telling all of the citizens of the city of Calabasas to evacuate. Now. Here's where. To be quite transparent. I might have made a mistake. We had we have lived through at least five to seven fires in that area. And what they normally do due to the topography and the wind patterns is wherever they start. They just race down towards Malibu. So this fire started in Newbury park in did something completely different due to these Santa Ana winds, it came towards us it moved in an easterly direction past Westlake past Agoura hills in in started. I could see the flames right up looking at we we're in a valley looking up at the hill starting to come over. So so you didn't we did not evacuate right away. No. I put the ladder up against the the house. I got the fire hose, I was ready to you know, do what I could. Much your neighbors. Did they feel the same way? Several of the neighbors were of my mind and several words several were smart and they packed up right away. And I was running across the street. A lot of the time we walk through life. We don't even know the names of our neighbors. We don't even meet in this in this instance, in a in a terrible emergency all of sudden, these are like you're in this together. So I'm helping the neighbors grandma into the, you know, carrying her out to the car, so they can escape, but there were a couple of diehards like myself in a couple of other neighbors who wanted to stick it out because we'd always seen the fires come up to us. But then race down towards Malibu whether it been whether it was on the. Westside or the eastside. So, but this one surprised will this one I knew so we were we were sitting there. We got the first alarm that we sh we should have the city of calabasses said you this is mandatory evacuation you need to leave now. And that was like four in the morning. So we're watching the television throughout the morning, and I go in an obscure optical. I'm going, you know, they always say this the fire just gonna just miss us and go straight down to Malibu the way, it always has. And but then all of a sudden around. Around one thirty in the afternoon. The fires had jumped not the the fire lie. The they closed off the freeway at the next exit to us. So that was we couldn't leave that way. And they also said that they had closed the one oh one going eastbound as well. But then all of a sudden on the TV, they showed us the fire jumped the one oh one and was on both lost hills. And. Loss. Virginis we took out a hotel, which was abutting the one oh one freeway in was heading right for us. So that's when I say, I said, okay. It's time to go..

And demar damore Lawry's the damore as famous pizza. That's right too. Big pizza places, man. That's right. He used to live in Newbury park. Yeah. Love that joint. And then I got a message from Chris little sorry by the kooks. Among us won't be at the thanksgiving dinner. Yeah. What's what's the point in going? I think there's some fighting going on what you know, this story. Yeah. But it's not gonna happen. But I think that I think they're going to come to the Christ cathedral. Over the past. I think so. Yeah. Because improv at church is a perfect combo and and on the radio. Oh, yes. Yeah. I actually think the the first two segments of the show are just going to be the kooks among us, and it's going to be mime play. And then we also have. Who is it? You said Jill Stein was coming on. She did a thanksgiving. Thing with you and all the other characters. Jill stein. Jane wells. Jane wells. For president Joseph. Oh, Jane wells. I get them out. What's going on? With Jay wells is she had a thanksgiving thing. She wrote. She does this podcast and bender is part of this. It's called actually it's in your fault. Or if you wanna play a little teaser, she'll be on tomorrow night to explain it. It's so good and a bunch of us participated. It tells the story of the Mayflower and uses modern technology, technology and lingo as if the pilgrims. Oh, they were today in two thousand eighteen. Yeah. She wrote it and produced it is so..

"West of Chatsworth in the rocky peak area, the Westlake village area. Now, just south of the one zero one freeway, I two Mulholland highway and from Westlake boulevard and going all the way east to Las virgins. That's a big area south of the one freeway, and that's which again is of course, south of the Agora hills and the oak park area which had already been evacuated a couple of hours ago, but they're they're expanding that those have been mandatory evacuation orders because this fire now has grown to officials say seventy five hundred acres burned that's a quick jump. These winds are doing tremendous damage in that area and earlier in the day yesterday. We're we're talking about the other fire that was burning in Newbury park area that is still bringing in the Newbury park area that one at last we heard was five to seven thousand acres, but it was more in not in so much. Financial areas. This one has blown up just in the last couple of hours because of these tremendous winds that are blowing through that area. Again, began in the Chatsworth area just sort of west of there in the rocky peak area and began moving south west pretty quickly. Just a couple of hours ago, they evacuated all of oak park area this. They're calling the Wolsey fire so for reference sake, but at least thirty homes have been destroyed at least fifteen in the oak park area loan have been destroyed that fires moving very quickly and expanding out again new mandatory evacuation orders below the one zero one freeway just the Westlake village area, south of the one on one Baotou all the way to Mulholland highway south and then from Westwood boulevard on the west side going east to Virginis so that whole square area. There's a lot of wooded area a lotta hill area there. But there, of course, there are homes there ficials have increased that estimate again to seventy five hundred acres, strong winds are pushing it south-southwest, text and voice alerts have been going. "Eighty eight ten for one five eight zero eight zero eight one zero horror in southern California in Ventura County at a bar. He walked in. He also had a smoke device and he opened fire. Killing twelve people including a sheriff's deputy. Sheriff sergeant I should clarify. Who was nearing retirement? And the killer himself also died so that makes a total of thirteen. You lived nearby in Newbury park. Yeah. And what makes this one even even if it's possible worse than others? United States Marine. Apparently suffering from PROST post traumatic stress disorder. According to the Ventura County sheriff. At the news conference this morning. Mass.

"Conway show is in the the weather station here. No, not a problem at the weather now in addition to this fire Newbury park, which will update shortly. There's also a fire burning in northern California that I think would be getting a lot of a lot more attention. If it weren't for the two massive events happening here in southern California because this fire buke county, northern California the town of paradise about twenty five thousand people live in this town. It's a mountain community. There's only one road in one road out, and this fire has also exploded to at least ten thousand acres and has already destroyed a thousand buildings including a hospital. So we are following that. It's nicknamed the campfire if you see that referenced anywhere online, Eric Leonard is with us from K NBC channel four Eric. Thanks for coming on. I know that you have some information on on Ian long the the suspect of of the shooting last night. What are you know, more? What do you know about this guy? Well, not as much as we'd like to maybe the most insightful pieces of the puzzle seem to be at least to the word. We're getting from law enforcement is going to come once again from social media. We know that this character had an Instagram and Facebook account that we're both taking down records scrubbed from public view. And there's some indications that those accounts could contain important clues are information or insight into what this was all about not that there's going to be a rational explanation for it ever. But probably there will be something that will help the detectives who are trying to piece together this man's life over the last weeks and months something in there that will help explain perhaps what his state of mind wise, I in the moments leading. Up to what happened last night? And by the way, who who took the social media Dow was it was taken down by him few days ago or did Facebook or the cops who took it down information. We got today is that Facebook said it, I which also owns Instagram had cooperated with a law enforcement requests to remove it from public view. So no, it was not something that was done. Because perhaps what was posted violated terms of service or somebody else have reported it. He had taken down his account. It sounds like this was a reaction to whatever transpired last night. I say, okay. As far as the much of the investigation today. In addition to processing the horrific crime scene at the bar was focused on Ian, longs, mother's home. That's where I spent the last ten or eleven hours. It's in a bedroom community Newbury park, maybe five or six miles from the bar. Maybe. Little bit more the neighbors. There say that long had lived there for several years. They didn't have a lot of contact with him kind of kept to himself. Not a lotta I contact or conversations, but their attention was drawn to home many times because very loud, yelling arguments and most notably last April. At least sounds like two neighbors called nine one one. After hearing what they described as really loud banging bike so loud. Like someone was trying to punch through the wall or punch the wall of the house down tear down something like that. Possibly gun shot from inside that you heard outside the hard for them to tell. But they said lots of arguing and yelling followed sheriff Jeff dean from Ventura County earlier today, the deputies were out there as a result of that call but after interviewing day long and interviewing whoever else was there, and it was a witness bay decided that it didn't meet law enforcement criteria. Wow. Hey, there was no arrest. And there was no involuntary commitment to a mental health facility. And so it it didn't take the direction that might have for all we know put the brakes on whatever happened last night. I we're still hoping to get some more detail out of bad out of some of the law enforcement records new collected that night take us a while to get that after I'm sorry. Go ahead. So this is a local kid because I heard earlier that they interviewed his baseball coach. And he said, he's a very intense, man. And they said he's and the one thing he wrote in his yearbook, which you could not do nowadays that what is. Yeah. What is life like after baseball, and he just wrote one simple word death. Yeah. Pretty chilling to see that. Now. That's crazy. One of the focuses of the investigation, obviously is finding out if there was some kind of clue left behind that. Again, not a rational explanation, but something that would give the rest of us give the investigators give the families of the victims some kind of idea of of where this rage came from. They haven't found anything like that on paper. So no written manifesto or anything like that. But there's a strong possibility that there are digital versions of something like that the FBI spent much of the day at his mother's house. They were using technological methods of copying hard drives making copies of all the digital media that was found. Yes. The I did one highly unusual thing that I think this may be one of the first times it's been done that certainly in the case beside profile was they used a dog named ginger. They come out to the house and sniff around for electronic media. The dog is trained much like a dog could smell for drugs or smell for explosives could smell for the signature of digital stuff. Shook it boards memory cards, USB sticks. Thumb drives computer disks. And and they spent quite a bit of time with the dog running around the house when the agents left. Early afternoon. They had a lot of packaged items are that looked to be about the size of a computer hard drive. They had a number of things in bags and boxes that we couldn't see what they were while they were doing a search of the house a number of people return to get the family dog. We believe one of those people was Ian, mom's mother who lived with for for a number of years is the father in was the father in this kid's life at all. I hard to say is his name is listed in that same high school yearbook. People in the neighborhood seemed to know who he was. But didn't think that he lived in the home? So maybe he used to live there. You know, the is not as you can imagine not real receptive to folks like us today. I think we'll be able to get a better sense of that soon today. We just don't know. I say, well, I really appreciate coming on. I know it's been a long busy day in. Everyone's pulling at you take taken. I gotta say Ventura County is usually this sort of idyllic, quiet place. And I know feels very very apocalyptic today. I know I love Thousand Oaks, my wife, my daughter, and I I mean, we drive out to that Thousand Oaks mall for Christmas shopping since such a family oriented festival during the holidays, and for this small little town like Thousand Oaks, the you could find in Ohio or Indiana or Michigan to be affected by this kind of violence. And now these fires people must just be beside themselves. Yeah. Hey, by the way, that is why. A lot of people who work down in Los Angeles. Make the hour drive out here every day because it does have that idyllic fields. Right. It's also has one of the best climates around. They get an ocean breeze almost every day coming up from Oxnard. So it's always ten or fifteen degrees cooler than everywhere else. Yeah. Life altering the last twenty four hours. Yeah. Well, really appreciate coming on with us. And we'd love to check back with you a funny thing getting more developments here. Thank you, sir. All right. Eric Leonard with KABC's be over with KFI here with us, and he went on to to do a television Arbor keeping an eye on on channel four the brushfire in Newbury park anymore formation. We will have absolutely be talking about that all night long. It is very scary for people live out there. There are a lot of people live in the Newbury park Thousand Oaks area were in their seventies. And eighties retired old money people who raise their kids there. And now, they're grandkids come to visit them, it's a beautiful old area of Los Angeles or Ventura, and they experienced two major disasters here all in the last twenty four hours, and it's very very tough on everybody out there. I will try to make give give you all the details, especially where this fires moving traffic as well with Angel Martinez kinda my show bend. What's going on the latest on the one on one being shut down and bolts directions between Camarillo? In Newbury park. We'll check with Angel Martinez in ninety seconds mandatory evacuation orders have been ordered in bell canyon at saddleback road between maverick lane and Morgan road as well as the areas of Camarillo springs until trailer park Cal.

"Is certainly taking the brunt of all of this. I you have the mass shooting last night. Where a dozen innocent people lost their lives. And then you have the fires going on. In in the Newbury park area, which is just which borders. Thousand oaks. And so we have Chris ancarlo Chris Carlo. Let's I've talked him real quick here. And we're going to get to sheriff Jimmy Donald as Well, Chris Carlin now you've been out there since two AM. What is the latest out there in Thousand Oaks? The the ladies from the police angle is that they continue to just really pick apart this scene not only at the bar where I'm still at. But also at the home of the shooter, which is a Newbury park, which is the other angle of this. It's currently on fire as you just mentioned. And so they are you know, peace and through all of this information really just trying to figure out what happened in the last few months to trigger in long. He's a twenty eight year old Marine Corps veteran who for whatever reason walk into this bar borderline bar and grill last night at eleven twenty and opened fire shooting. I it appears a bouncer or security guard at the entrance and then turning his gun on patrons and employees of this bar and grill. It was just within a matter of moments two three four minutes after the shooting stope opened up that two police officers ran inside of the C H P police officer, excuse me, HP officer and even. Sure county sheriff's office sergeant who ran inside. And and that sergeant Ron he was was shot several times he was pulled out of the he was pulled out of the bar by the HP officer and taken to the hospital and pronounced dead just about an hour later, and you know, as I was driving down here. The the reports were sketchy we didn't know how many people were actually killed. It seemed for a little while there that maybe it was just a mass injury situation instead of a mass death situation. And there were reports that a sheriff's deputy had been shot. But you know, again was early reports that didn't seem as though it was life threatening. And then as things came into sharper, focus, we realized how serious this was. And then it was about probably three o'clock. I times hazy on me in the morning when. When when the sheriff said that they had lost the the there sergeant? And he was just one of a dozen people that were killed in this in this bar at eleven twenty last night. Now, are you still out there? Yeah. I'm right across the street from the borderline bar and grill just about to wrap up here. And how can you see the fire from where you are? No. So you know, I can't see the glow of the fire. But as in this was the thing that for me was just absolutely shocking is. Excuse me. I was in the middle of doing a hit for some other station on the other side of the country. And I was trying to find a place where they could hear me 'cause the wifi are these cell signal out here is horrible. And so as I went around this bend toward the skull. Of course, I looked up and there was this massive smoke clouds. Gotta be kidding me. That was probably about two thirty three o'clock or so before you even knew there was a fire there. Yeah. Yeah. And I called in I called under the newsroom, I'm like you guys. I see smoke loud here. And they said, oh, it's just one hundred hundred acre farm like this thing is definitely bigger on one hundred acres right now. And you know, it's been so windy here all day long and not all day long. It kicked up, you know, like mid morning. And when it did I mean, these winds were blowing with ferocity, and they're Super Dry and just what a confluence of tragedy. I know you've been out there all night, buddy. I really appreciate it. And we'll check back with you. That is a an unbelievable situation going on in their. Thank you very much. Chris ancarlo who's out in Thousand Oaks live talk to sheriff, Jim McDonald? He's with us sheriff. I I know it's a really busy day. Thanks for taking some time out to address everybody in and find out what's going on out in Thousand Oaks. Sheriff is this were you notified last night? When this happened. Yeah. They'll get it. We get notifications on anything like that that comes up. I get notified that I reached out via text sheriff Jeff just to see if we could be of assistance out there at the time. Hey, let me know that that time he had lost aside. You oh my God. We have had whatever we could do. But. You know, just difficult all around really a tragedy. And that's that's bordering on LA county than LA county. I think starts just a few miles south of where that that restaurant and bar is right when something like this happens, and the the first sergeant that that shows up. I I heard it was L highway patrol, and then sergeant Ron Hillis as well. When when they show up is it up to is their discretion whether to go in or not how are they trained? Are they are they trained to wait for people or go into media post Columbine shooting? We've revised our tactics to where it used to be for something like this. You would get swiped and specialized units out there to be able to deal with it. We don't do that anymore because of the obvious carnage going on inside. And if you don't, you know, immediately, intervene that's gonna continue. So yeah, the plan now in the training is that you you put together a team, and you go in there and you immediate. Try and locate identify the shooter and then stop the shooting. Well, what are you a couple of ah sergeant and an officer as well. And I know sergeant Ron hilas is gonna miss out on his retirement spending time with kids and grandchildren. But man when they look back on it. I nobody I don't know anybody in my immediate family or might surrounding. They can look at at their relative in say he died being the bravest man in Thousand Oaks or in California at that time. Yeah. There's no doubt. He saved many lives there last night. And it just an example of, you know, the kind of selflessness that we see, you know, from so many in this profession, and you know, it's it's hard to believe we don't have more support until something like this happens. And you know, there's. It's it's a head shake this. This sergeant is truly a hero. Yeah. It is rather disgraceful that. I support only comes when something like this happens. However, when when something like this does happen, especially out in the in the rural areas, where police officers are still a highly respected. I it was very moving to see all the folks pullover on the one oh one to get out of their car on both north and south plains and pay their last respects. Yeah. No tremendous tribute. And look at that, you realize that what we often see in here is not really Representative of of America of, you know, the hard work and people that are trying to raise a family and just going to work every day. They truly do respect what what is done on their behalf. And they're out there with the American flag hand over their hearts and just a a powerful tribute to anybody who sees it. Yeah. And and this sergeant. Rahilou's twenty nine year veteran, and I heard he was just months away from retiring, which makes it extremely difficult for his wife. Absolutely. You know, you work your whole career. And yet every day. You're you're hoping that that that called us income if you're the family right coming to a close of a career, you're here. Hopefully, you'll make it. And unfortunately in this case, he didn't sheriff Jim McDonald's with us when something like this does happen. And I don't want to go into too many of the details because I'm sure you like to keep that close to the to the vast. But when when something like this happens are there officers that that stay with the widow or widower for a period of time a couple of days, maybe a couple of weeks at the house to make sure that that they're supported. Yeah. Yeah. No, absolutely. The family gets whatever space they need. But also, whatever company that they need. And that's something that, you know, varies depending on what the needs are that support certainly immediately following like this is is critical to to the recovery as well. But then, you know, after the funeral the the support needs to continue in order for that we really continue. And that's it's always a management, you know, cast to be able to try and figure out what's what's enough? What's too much and be able to manage accordingly? Well, when when they do have the service for sergeant Ron healers, and and everybody in Ventura County all the Ventura County deputies, and the sheriff will be attending that as many as as as they can will they ask you to to patrol the areas while the services going on. We're certainly willing to help in any way. We can they will you know, they may do that. If they do certainly we'd be we'd be willing to do whatever's whatever's necessary and needed to be able to allow them to attend the service. Right. And and I'm sure they offered the same assistance vice versa when the tragedy happens in your depart, everybody rallies together and just to try and make it work. Yeah. And I and I. You always you often look for the silver lining. But nobody was talking about the election today. Nobody is talking about politics. Now, he knew who was a democrat or Republican everybody knew we're on the same team today. That's right. That's right. It's we rally when things are really bad. We all rally as Americans toward whatever. Whatever needs to be addressed. And it's you know, it's I think it's healthy to see that as tragic as as sensitive was or so many others. You know, we're we're people that come together when the need dictates. I'm sorry for your loss and your brotherhood. I will we'll speak to you soon. And God bless you the whole department and Ben stay safe. Thank you very much. Thank you, sir. All right. Sheriff Jim McDonnell, obviously, you can hear it in his voice, very moved by by this. This sergeant Ron Hillis who was gunned down at the borderline bar and grill last night on college. Night there. Every Wednesday was was college night and all these beautiful kids who have lost their lives the tremendous earlier on. I heard John and Ken speaking with the one of the fathers of a of a victim, and we're going to replay that at some point tonight because that was extremely moving. When something like this happens. There is nobody better at at getting the victim's family on the air to comfort them, and you can hear in the voice of this father that while he was talking to John and Ken the world's seemed to be a little better at that point. So that's that's. I really think that that goes a long way, but the family it's the Conway show, we'll come back with much more coverage of the fire as well. As the disaster last night in Thousand Oaks, we're live on KFI AM six forty more now with Aaron Ben brush fire near Newbury park, west of California Lutheran university has exploded at least ten thousand acres..

"You the one a one freeway is closed in Newbury park. There's a fire. That's moving very rapidly. And you can see it in the brush their right alongside the freeway. The fire at one point jump the freeway, which is what shut down the one. Oh one freeway right at rush hour. So the roads all around Ventura County if you're trying to make that commute if you work in Ventura County, are you live there you're trying to get back? It's going to be a bitch and a half tonight. Yeah. And there's already mandatory evacuations underway for cameras springs and one of the trailer parks around there. So you see coming? Don't wait for the authorities. I just get out of there and look at the fire looking at aerial pictures right now of the fire on NBC four, and it's it's a line of fire. Did you can see that you typically see when there's a brushfire, but then there are patches of fire that aren't connected necessarily to other parts of the fire. So it's just all over the place in Newbury park. Yeah. I must be interested in absolute nightmare to as we said for the first responders who already had to deal with this terrible situation last night. And now we have this and getting these people evacuated. Do we know what what caused this fire, and I say that because if this arson we've seen some fires this year caused by ours. And if this is arson then whoever it is that did that should be strung up in the town square eye flog, I have not seen anything indicating how this started. It's just started at spreading very quickly. And when we had Jim Roope on the show earlier, he was talking to us on a cell phone outdoors. You could hear the wind in the background blowing very hard. So if you have a drought, you have a fire that's already started. And you have wind that's blowing that is very toxic combination. It's four thirty. Mickey Kaus is going to join us and give us his take on Tuesday's election. But right now, it's time for headline. KABC news is live and local.

"Oaks overnight, Eric Leonard is at the home of the killer there in Newbury park joins us now, Eric what what is the what is the scene there right now? This is where agents from the FBI the alcohol, tobacco and firearms have been shoora county sheriff's department and probably other agencies. We haven't spotted yet are continuing to look for evidence. Any kind of clue that would help with the understanding of what happened last night. There's not necessarily going to be a rational one or one that makes sense to anyone else. But other looking for some kind of insight into what may have motivated this twenty eight twenty nine year old man to do what they say he did last night. So the street near Newbury park has been sealed off FBI agents have been in and out of the house during the morning, and as we just reported over it to NBC four minutes ago, we've learned a little bit about what's going on. I searched it was done here overnight involved. Members of the Ventura County sheriff's department's bomb squad. They were searching for anything hazardous because there were reports. Oh, remember that somebody perhaps through a smoke bomb? Not somebody the guy who did the killing through a smoke bomb at the time that the shots were fired inside borderline bar. And so somebody's got smoke bombs. Maybe that means they've got something else. Or is we've also seen in some of these mass shooting cases, the first event is not necessarily the only one that was planned. And sometimes there are other things that are found later on. So they had to rule out the possibility we're told that search was done number of law enforcement sources have shared with us. But nothing hazardous or explosive was found at the house nothing explosive or hazardous was found in the car. They believe Ian, long drove to the bar that was his mother's car and nothing else explosive or hazardous was found at the bar at leads to the next thing they're doing which is looking for clues and evidence that might help. Explain what went on. They are telling us here at NBC four and on our. Investigative team that as of this moment, they have not found any kind of manifesto any kind of writing anything that would provide what they call a motive or intent. There doesn't mean it isn't there? They just haven't found it yet. One of the things we watched in the last hour or so or FBI agents, pulling in these hard cases, rolling hard cases that were told are part of a kid that the F B I will use when they go out to collect digital evidence. It has small computers and devices that allow the duplication of hard drives memory cards cell phone, data that sort of thing those were rolled into the house, maybe an hour hour and a half ago. So clearly, that's the focus of what they're looking for here. They didn't find something on paper that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Now, they're looking at all the digital devices that are inside the house. The other thing we reported a little while ago is that the. The. Because there has been no specific information found so far that points to any kind of terrorist, motives, the belief is that this was I guess what you might call a one off type of incident. There was no bigger theme here. And for that reason at the moment the case is going to remain with the Ventura County sheriff's department, they're going to be the lead investigators on this. The federal agencies can bring in a a tremendous amount of expertise recovering data that sort of thing, but not necessarily running the investigation as lead as we've seen in some of the other mass shooting type incident. So it's going to remain a local case federal agents from a variety of agencies are here to assist and the processing of the alleged or suspected or believed killers home is ongoing and is probably going to last several days. The few interesting things about the neighborhood in the house the mandate believe did this lives here with his mother. He has it sounds like for neighbors grew up here. There was one incident described by even Tura county sheriff Jeff dean at one of the briefings earlier today where he says deputies were called out to the house. The neighbor who made the nine one one call talked with us this morning and said that back in April. He heard extremely loud, bang, maybe more than one so loud that he thought somebody might be trying to pull the wall off of the house next door. That's what got the sheriff's department out here. Sheriff Jeff dean as you heard in the briefing earlier today said he's got out here they interviewed Ian long. They believe that there were some issues going on. But they for whatever reason didn't rise to the level of law enforcement intervention. So no arrest. No. Commitment to any kind of mental health evaluation. And one of the things we're looking into today is really what were the specifics of that encounter because it it? Sure got the neighbors worried, but for whatever reason didn't rise to the threshold that would cause law enforcement to take action back then what's going on with mom assume. She's not there. I mean that they would have taken her somewhere else. Yeah. So overnight. As quickly as the the smoke was clearing in the bar. The focus of the investigation was to identify the killer. That's what everybody was working on and very quickly. They were using evidence. That was found there at the scene to develop a list of possible names, and one of the names led them here. So deputies from the Ventura County sheriff's department and then joined by FBI agents were here very very quickly overnight, and they got access to the house. It looks like the the man's mother left voluntarily to be questioned interview. Stay with friends relatives, it could be any number of circumstances where you know, she's not here. And then it was several hours between that time and the time the investigators were able to obtain a search warrant to go into the house, and they got that warrant signed in and began their search around eight o'clock this morning. Eric. Thank you. Appreciate it. Okay. Eric Leonard there from NBC four again, he's outside the home of the the suspect in this shooting at borderline bar and grill in Thousand Oaks, we've been watching while while Eric was talking and while we're talking with Chris the procession that is taking the body of sergeant Ron Hillis. This twenty nine year veteran events or a county sheriff's department through Thousand Oaks through Newbury park through Camarillo is on his way through Oxnard. Now, it's words the coroner's office there in Ventura County, again sergeant he was one of two law enforcement officers that were the first to respond to this. He teamed up with a C H P officer and were able to engage this shooter right away. And the way the sheriff talked about it this morning was that it's clear that because sergeant Hillis and HP officer who is far as we know yet has not yet been identified because they were able to go in and engage this guy. There is a great chance. Chance that that saved dozens of other lives because if you had a couple of hundred dollars in there for college country now, then the fact that they were able to draw attention away from a dancefloor full of people. And I think that that's an interest. That's a something to wrap your head around the way, the sheriff described it this morning was after Columbine many, many law enforcement agencies changed the way they would respond to a situation like this. They don't wait outside for the swat team to get their everybody has mass shooter training active shooter training, you go in alone. Now, you go into loan, and you know, that there's a damn good chance that as you're serving as the distraction for the mass murder that you're not going to walk out of there. But that as as you mentioned providing that distraction can save so many lives, and it looks like Ron Hillis did just that and save so many lives. It's gonna be a tough day. We are going to hear a lot of names. And we're here names of young people. We had the first name come out this morning. Cody Kaufman, his dad talked to reporters outside outside the hospital there, and we will give you his comments when we return. Gary channel will continue our coverage of the borderline bar and grill shooting in Thousand Oaks today. Jennifer Jones Lee has some up as Gary and Shannon were mentioning the procession carrying the body of twenty nine year old Ventura County sheriff's deputy veteran Ron he is heading down the winner one Thousand Oaks right now, he was one of twelve people killed last night in a shooting at the borderline bar and grill apparently by twenty eight year old former marine walked into the bar and started shooting. "That's what we do. We work it on out, spent a little more time with Greg and his dying mouse bloom. I didn't know this at the very end of the call just hung up on him. Well, I mean, just had to wrap IX, came back. He says, yeah, this is a old machine and I had windows and stolen another machine. So just to the hard drive out of the machine plugged into this machine. Okay. There's your problem in a nutshell when you install windows on a machine, what it does is it goes out. It looks at all the hardware in the machine, installs the right things to go with that hardware. It's really a recipe for disaster taking a hard drive out of one machine and put in another. If they're not identical machines, you've got an windows install that thinks it's on a different set, a hardware. Sure. Windows will plug and play and say, oh, you got new hardware. I would. This is a hate to say it because this is always the cheap way out reinstall windows and do it on that machine. It's almost always a problem if you take windows a drive that has windows installed on it from one machine and put another machine boot up, it might work, but it's not gonna work perfectly for sure. So that sounds like a driver shoe? Yeah. Harvey Newbury park, California. Hello, Harvey, Leo LaPorte. The tech guy. I've got windows seven, and what I'm looking for is something some sort of program for mere image backup. I used to have it and the company that provided it stopped providing that they only provide believe it or not. You still have it. It's called windows seven backup win this funny because even if you have windows ten, you have it, but you have to look for windows seven backup in windows ten because it's kind of the old school, but there is windows comes with.
