He had aloft long love of horses and had started working for the con as an assistant when he was just sixteen. Jim took his job very seriously and spent Hda talking to the horses immaculately cleaning the stables and grooming them thoroughly. Romantic Bridges and Little Museums of Paris; Burgundy

"Of the small specialty museums in Paris were allowed to reopen weeks before the Lou, but just because they don't attract the big crowds of the famous museums doesn't mean they aren't worth your time in just a bit. We'll hear why they can be worth. Including in your travel plans next time you're in town and we'll explore what you'll find in the peaceful countryside of Burgundy and easy giant from Paris. Let's start. Today's very French edition of travel with Rick Steves along the banks of the Seine, the busy river that winds through the heart of the city. Paris to me, it's the capital of Europe and you can never get tired of ten. I just love the way the THEMM lined through. The city in the city faces. It's river and I also love the way it's laced together by bridges that just give so much meaning to your wondering through Paris. Lynch Lima is a journalist for the New York Times. She's written books about Paris to her. New Book is called. The river that made Paris, and she talks about the bridges that lease together the right bank and left bank. In Paris Elaine. Thanks for joining us. Thanks for having me on your show I. Love The way your book. The Seine the river that made Paris illustrates the importance. To France end to Paris and of course, Paris was born on this end, wasn't it? Yes, there would not have been a Paris. Had it not been for the Senate and for the heels lessee tae the island that is the center, the heart of the city of Paris, and that goes back to Roman Times. Pre Roman Times Poetry Roman times absolutely now when we think about the send through the centuries through most of the centuries, it's been a mucky riverbank where. Where you've got all sorts of slime and sewer and garbage and poverty, and and then over the centuries built this wonderful embankment that sort of teams the river, and and makes it an elegant part of the city. Talk a bit about the embankment in Paris will the embankment of Paris really the way it looks like now was conceived in the nineteenth century at before that you could pretty much walk along the banks of the Seine and bring your cows and horses. Horses and dogs right into the river, your laundry, whatever now it's a little bit more challenging, although there are places right now in Paris that you can walk down into the river and go swimming if you're so inclined, but with this mighty embankment you also have elegant bridges, lacing it together to the right and the left bank, and one of my favorite things in Paris just to walk along the banks of the river, and in or cruise the river and enjoy the. The bridges I've got so many vivid memories of just being on the top of one of those river, Seine, tourist boats, and going under these glorious bridges, and the more you know about the context of these bridges, the more funded is to sail under them. Let's just go and there's four bridges that really come to mind from. Yes, I'd love to just talk about each of them as if we're cruising down the river and I. we come to the punt new. Means the Newbridge, right? It means the new bridge, even though it's the oldest bridge in Paris. And when it was built, it was finished in the beginning of the seventeenth century, it was a miracle was an architectural dazzling creation, because it was the first bridge that didn't have houses on either side, so that people would come to the pontiff and look at the expanse of the river. It became the heart and soul of Paris where. You would come and have all sorts of wild activities. You could join up for the army or by. Orange juice or have a tooth pulled or watch jugglers or exchange God. You could buy false teeth and glass is and wooden legs and life, poultry and skin whiteners, so it really was the place to be was a gathering place a Piazza for the city. It was. You know what that's exactly right? It's like a piazza in the shape of a bridge. Now when you said it had didn't have houses on either side. Are you talking like lined with houses and shops like the punt Vecchio in Florence and the London Bridge in. Exactly and that you finally had an open view to the river, and you didn't have these barriers in the shape of houses blocking your. Visual joy of Helseth Martavis city that has some pride because it's just a practical matter. If you had a bridge that you needed help, pay for and maintain. You'd rent out space to it and it would obliterate the fact that it feels like a bridge so London Bridge and the Punt Vecchio it would be lined by shops that were paying rent to the city, so they could have that great bridge. Bridge punt new F-. It's a piazza. That's great. The next bridge we come to is the punt art that right the what what does that mean, and how is it unique well? It's the bridge of the arts and I love this bridge. Because it joy. It's a walking bridge. It's a pedestrian bridge, and so it's a great bridge for picnicking, but if you stand front of this bridge at the Louvre. And look through a gorgeous courtyard, but not many people know about is called the core cafe, the square courtyard you can look through the arch, and you can see right across the bridge to the St to default on the other side of the river, which is where the economy foss says is head. You just feel like you've got this magical long view of Paris

"Way way way way way way down which kind the peaks my interest we're also watching the recent initial public offerings can the market that you should tell we've told you that a hundred times pay attention to the ones that break out to new high ground with strong revenue growth hopefully strong earnings growth and we promise you ten years from now some of these names gonna be up five and ten full because that's how it always happens every decade the biggest winners all the newer names companies that started they did a two hundred fifty million in sales for the year and ten years from now they do one four billion especially the ones that are non white I'm not even talking uber or lift because they are already in the sky as far as valuations the company's a couple million hundred million in revenues not eight billion and if you go back to when Newbridge networks came public and asks and communications back we're talking way back nobody ever heard of and how these things mature response he's institutions can take a look and look at those revenue and earnings growth the first go round and what do these big institutions do they send their analysts to go visit the company's ao and you see that the products are selling like crazy can you recognize why they're selling like crazy and the analysts go back to the big institutions that manage a ton of money and so you know we got aboard this train a little bit more and they do when that lifts the stock price and then guess what happens the better earnings and sales come to fruition stock gets on the move and it continues the good numbers everything works and institutions recognize we don't have enough in stock soaring double but man oh man this thing's gonna keep me by again and they keep buying and that's how it works and there's only one place to look to find look at the I. P. less and then look at the new yearly heartless and you never know what industry but typically it's gonna be technology.

"For nineteen year old Gabor's to learn all that. I would bartend keeps this is wall. I was because I worked at Jones beach lifeguard at field six and field for listeners of the podcast may her that over two hundred times, I would bartend mckee's get out, get off work at, like three thirty in the morning drive past that says that's south of turnpike going down Newbridge or Belmore. Whatever that is get. Like a vitamin water like a tow, one of those Takito things that were on the wall. Those nasty like chicken sticks with an x and then get like eighty dollars scratch offs. Because I just got like three hundred dollars cash and I'm fucking nineteen. Blow most win twelve grand, then I'm fucking making money for the whole then do all that. Go to sleep at, like four thirty five in the morning and the wake up at seven thirty eight and go to the beach and have people's lives in my hands all saying, literally the best. That makes me think twice about feeling comfortable swimming. At the we're all everyone. There is a functional alcoholic. Most people are functional everyone's like, really into lifeguarding. But then, as soon as the day is over. It's about getting trash. No one's fucking around. I mean, I'm sure some people are dangerous alcohol are, but that was like the most frowned upon thing ever. It's like we'll let you sleep a hangover off all day, but do not get caught like fucking around on on the clock. There is a guy that went that was a lifeguard at Jones beach that was like the star of my high school, and I'm curious if you know him but I don't scare disease last name. First name was Graham, and he was like blonde. Really, don't very beautiful. The big people, I remember there was the scooter brothers were all like Long Island Long Beach. Swimmers off Mike will go into last name sorta, because I think I might know who you're talking about. He was he my friend, Alison because he was two years older than us. So when we were in. Sixth grade. She was so obsessed with him, and he would wear this like kangol wide will quarter ROY. Maybe like simple brand, and one day he led her like wear it all day because she was so in love with him. Homa God simple. So simple shoes out metoo. Oh, hell. Yeah. Oh, yeah. I had like the simple like sort of, like escape boarded the skateboarding. Like a little air, walk kid from seventh grade on boys that were air walks. It was a warlike. I distinctly remembered enough at the other day. And I'd like trying to tell someone this I remember being going getting dressed up to go to someone's party of some sort in, like eighth grade and me. Putting on what I thought was like my best Alfred. I had, and it was black corduroy shorts like pass. My knee rusty brand air walks shoes and a zip up bowling shirt, like a short sleeve. King with the two streams of Argyll down. I wore all that, with, like a stew hat, where the brim was like shredded. Remember when you could get it to pop in the book, so cool, that's more that with Pook shell necklace. This is the best I've ever lived my life. And I'm saying it's for my own sanity could've been tenth grade been sixteen having going to try to lose my virginity dressed. Into outfit, but it was like, what I thought was the coolest possible. There's a surf shop on Merrick road bellmore called Allah Cal crews. And I would just go to allocate crews and getting spire by cool clothes. And then tell my mom, I wanted and Jeep find the gangs marshalls. She's I red twenty six it's just like Souci, but eight dollars per article on, you're like, oh, cool. I'll get into it. I love the skater where that was just like.

Oh, yes. But I can only cover only cover one at a time. Now, you didn't see any of this on CNN. Did you at any time on MSNBC did you how about the front pages of the New York Times with historical headlines or the front pages of the Washington Post with historical headlines? No, how about the bloated Carl Bernstein, the bloated and sickly looking doofus. And cheater Carl Bernstein is dragged onto the Sunday shows probably in a gurney to talk to Brian Stelter. As dumb as they come any of this provide any kinds of context. No. This Ted Kennedy, and there's so much more. Why do we bring this up because they're Democrats? Yes. In part because it shows what the media are like. But I also bring this up to show you how over the top the media, the Democrats, and this prosecutor has been with respect to Donald Trump. It's just incredible. The comparison I'll be right.

"Thirty. A measure that ultimately passed and help pave the way for its entrance into the World Trade Organization, which Feinstein also supported at the time a spokesperson for Feinstein indicated that her husband had divested of his last holdings in mainland China nine hundred ninety nine. But blunt stake in another Newbridge capital Asia fund, which contain investments in China belied that assertion. Meanwhile, in the years leading to the passage of that legislation plums Newbridge capital reportedly invested more than four hundred million dollars into East Asian businesses, at least ninety million of which was invested in companies prophets are pegged to the burgeoning mainland. China market, according to the companies themselves and several of which were partly owned founded by the Chinese government. If nothing else bloom still stood to profit handsomely from management fees for these portfolios. Defense companies in which blooms firms were invested signed billions of dollars in military contracts approved by Feinstein's committee such investments in Chinese assets continued in two thousand four Newbridge capital purchased an eighteen percent stake in Shenzhen development Bank. The first time a foreign company took effective control of a Chinese lender. From two thousand one the two thousand five Feinstein served as chair of the Senate military construction appropriations committee and during this time defense companies in which blooms firms where invested signed billions of dollars in military contracts approved by Feinstein's committee. This suggests a parallel pattern in the Feinstein families, political and business dealings that adversaries like China surely could have sought to explain when pressed on conflicts of interests. However, a multiple occasions Feinstein has flippantly responded by rhetorically asking what she could do to satisfy those raising the issue shorter getting divorced. Feinstein's husband has stressed that his ties to the Dalai Lama and criticisms of Chinese human rights violations would never have helped him carry favor with the Chinese and mainland and maintain no conflict of interest between his wife's position and his investments. The Senator recently cosponsored the foreign investment risk review modernization act of two thousand eighteen incorporated into the pending national defense authorization act it passed which gives the committee on foreign investment in the United States greater oversight over foreign transactions geared in part towards China's malign efforts to gain valuable technology and steal intellectual property. But provision penalizing sanctions violating Chinese telecommunication company. Z T were stripped from the Bill at the Trump administration's urging interesting perhaps anticipating future troubles the house intelligence committee. Would I warn that Z T E pose national security risks in two thousand twelve and October twenty eleven Z T hired its first in house lobbyists. None other none other than former Feinstein aide. Peter Rufo a position it appears he still holds today. Feinstein's economic positions. Frequently downplayed the PRC's rampant human rights violations. The Senator is fashioned herself a peacemaker often urging appeasement of the Chinese regime and both apologists for such abuses, energing restraint. Feinstein also argued against tying China's most favored nation trading status to human rights improvements. Feinstein also argued against China's most favored nation trading already said that in an argument that reads as not only but beyond naive, but demonstrates an offensive moral equivalency Feinstein added Chinese society continues to open up with looser ideological controls freer access to outside sources of information and increased media reporting. She says more people in China vote for their leadership on the local level. Then do Americans economic liberalization is introducing market forces the economy educational levels are up along with wages and the standard of what can you imagine? If Trump or anyone in his family. Had any of these associations with red China made a plug nickel off of them and then served as a propagandist for right, China as Feinstein dead and does. Pretty damning credible..

What is the story that you have? Oh my gosh. Okay. So I guess in Alabama. There was an eighteen Wheeler truck that got into a crash and everyone's okay. But what happened was it was a truck full of chicken tenders? And that right away the back open and all of these chicken tenders spilled all over the freeway and motorists stopped and started picking them up. No an eating them. Off the road. Yeah. Oh, and that's not very safe. So for a lot of reasons. Absolutely ridiculous. You're eating them and put them in their pockets like what's going on? Yeah. Look, I I love a good chicken tender, and I just said to Colin yesterday. It's been a long time since I've had a chicken mcnugget. I would like one soon, but I'm Knockin eat one off of highway one hundred maybe six ninety four. Maybe six ninety four. Yeah. Actually that Newbridge right over thirty five split. "Take from London that London Paddington to Newbridge, but it's how website again. To get the and the website is Huckabee calls. If you just go if you just type in Huntley causal if you talking. Get into that such one enough. So is it Highclere castle dot com. Or does that tell you? Got it. Okay. Dot CO dot UK. Excellent. This is a castle that has its beginnings thirteen hundred years ago. It's very old people have loved living here for a long time. It's a good place to live. Now, what we see today couldn't all have built been built in the year seven hundred it's kind of advanced for that period. But you'll right. The foundation still remain from the bishops of Winchester who and Highclere and had a building in policy here for some eight hundred years, and then he was nationalized. By Henry, the eighth who quite land sold into secular hands and my husband's Sunday in sixteen seventy nine. So that's how it came with us. And they've they've had very different reincarnation. So the latest one is on top of the Georgian house ah Chelsea Barry who with the design of the houses of parliament in London and preeminent architect. He was the architect because it's remained with pinnacles and spires, and he's quite big with two three hundred fifty two bedroom. So let me ask the question. Yeah. Oh, I guess I've answered in my own head, but I'll share it with everybody. No, it's not that floors castle in Kelso. In the Scottish borders. Region is the largest inhabited house in the UK. It's the largest inhabited house in Scotland. So that eliminated that because that has one hundred seventy four rooms and you beat those odds. I think it says we're one of the largest in habit houses, but we definitely some of the other houses are very large. But they've got very large marble, amazing entrance holes and and son enough. I think hike is cozy and Julian Fellowes wanted a house which made the statement in the time how many how many between two and three hundred and you're calling this cozy are you? Come in. And it seems cozy and manageable on TV without little the echoing which. But. Yeah. Well, if you get bored you can walk in the winter without doing outside. It's very Potisk. I love it. Do you use all the rooms? No, Well, I I we don't choose. I'm sort of gradually working my way round trying to walk out. What we've turned to the downstairs of the house is now dejection exhibition because the of canal is how it causes discovered common that used to be on those famous most famous reason to come into villages. And now, I think downton abbey puppy tops that. But nevertheless that exhibition is I hope fun and enjoyable and runs around the sellers the task. So so some of those rooms now which have a knee because we didn't have the number footmen. Throughout the bottom of the house. So that's good. This the Egyptian exhibit. How big is. Well, I mean, I think it takes you about fifty minutes on the public does a trail path to fun around with the guides to the state from which is about fifty minutes. And then it's about the same gain, Runcie gypsum exhibition. Ready? Just short that out. That's a big thing to put together an Egyptian exhibit. I mean, it's a lot of work goes into that. Did you have outside consultants work with you on that? No. I did most of that Sleaford. Bravo. Well, you it's amazing. What you can do if you try and by the time I'd explain what I wanted. I might have done it. So I. Hieroglyphs which is great for showing off and as a fantastic dinner party, trickle. Sometimes I might write people's placenames heartedly official doesn't get very far. All right. See that people going around the table looking for their place. Yeah. Over this topic of conversation. It breaks the ice. 'cause I used to be quite a few characters who come here and can be quite scary. So different ways that they. Are you acquainted with my good friend, Mark? Leslie, I I've actually been to cost with say. And I've known as I've met him. Talk Leslie, who I think was up there and a fantastic woman who was kind of running it. Sammy at the medicine today. Leslie, thank Sammy. Yes. She's a very good friend. So I have been out seven going around. And it's a it's a great role the crazy house. I think rather than normal back in town. Well, that's very true. There was a time when the the recorded message when you called Castle, Leslie, and you you got the the first recording that led you to press one for this impressed to for that kind of kind of thing. But the beginning of it was this howling insanity. Have you called? But I don't think they use that one anymore. Oh, good. Well, I think it's very advanced have press wants citizen t for that. We've reached that stage yet. Well, the reason I asked about Mark is that actually on June seventh. There's an exhibit a Churchill exhibit at the J P Morgan library in New York City. I I think it's called Churchill the power of the word and Mark is action market has company mortello media based in Dublin is responsible for the exhibit and the there's a gala on June seventh, and if you're going to get New York, I'll get you invited that would be grants we get to meet and then on the eighth it's open to the public. And I don't remember how long the run is it either runs through the fall or into the winter. But he's also responsible for the award winning exhibit visitors exhibited experiences at the cliffs of more in county Clare Ireland, the black rock observatory in county cork the. Gates exhibit at the national library in Dublin and the exhibit at the visitor center. Experience at glass Nevin cemetery in Dublin, and he's marvelous, and if you ever decide you wanna take your Egyptian exhibit to the next level, I need to put the two of you together. He is the most marvelous character, and you will. So enjoy him that whether you ever do business with him or not you'll enjoy doing pleasure with him. Up to having to come to that. And in the Lewisham stay 'cause I had to write the second goal. Having finished the first one so. The first book again, which I happen to have on my desk, but I have some throw and I promised myself. I was going to read before we actually got as far as wondering it. So that was a good thing. Lady I made it a real down snotty, and then has some wonderful Cussing book what happened for us and this love because from the new times, but the New York-based, he marries English. Oh, and that's the second book and it's chasing. What happens to them and going through the twenties and thirties fascinating time and not much that into the second world rule and see what happens side because the me this also filled with central quite fun. Well. Stories from the south again what happened. Well, this may continue to simulate the Julian Fellowes thinking didn't he do Gosford Park this? Well. Eight and he tried to bring back here. But we've only had one line thing. I made mommy to several and. We always have every Sunday, which is father said that we could find you you make sure that I have. Nominate. I think of every time I bring it out. Get thing. I accept full. We'll stay with me. We're gonna take a.
