The biggest one day slump in decades. A number of points here to make, well, let's run through the numbers first, and then we'll get to the points. The SX 200 down 1.7% here. The nzx 50 in New Zealand is trading down about 8 tenths of a percent. And as mentioned, futures look like showing losses in some of the other markets, most notably Tokyo. I've got a lot of strength in the yen up against the dollar dollar yen one 33 19. A number of moves so that could be interpreted as a positive for risk assets. The fed is launching an internal probe of its supervision of Silicon Valley bank. Goldman Sachs and pimco say the fed could take a breather on rates next week, and Nomura went even one step further saying the fed could cut next week. And perhaps geopolitical relations could get better, Joe Biden and Xi Jinping, a call between the two is being eyed and president Xi also to call Vladimir zelensky if all goes well, China resuming issuing visas to tourists and other foreigners and the Chinese Premier Li xiang, launching a confidence drive aimed at the private sector and at foreign investors. "They're back doesn't San Francisco. It. Karma, Apple, we'll have to take sorry. Eddie, are you there? Okay, having connectivity issues I apologize for that. As long as I have you, Paul, I want to come back to that. I thought it was the RB and Z, but it's the New Zealand government forecasting recession in the second quarter of next year, right? Yeah, that's right. And not as deep as the aby and zid is anticipating. This is the half year fiscal and economic update that the government puts out and yeah, recession predicted in the second quarter of 2023, a shallow lasting for potentially three quarters, but we have to bear in mind that the government does face an election in 2023 and the well-known phrase it's the economy stupid. We'll be ringing loudly in there is as they count down the polling day. And even so the RB and Z saying in the face of this forecast, it's going to continue to raise interest rates. That's very curious. Yeah, that's right. I mean, yeah, inflation is as it is in many developed economies, a serious challenge. In New Zealand it was 7.2% in the last quarter when we got the last numbers back in October. The intention of fiscal policy from the New Zealand government going forward was to attempt to cool that, with that in mind, the fuel excise relief that was in place for the past few months is not going to be renewed. That was costing the government about half a million kiwi dollars per year. So that has gone. On a positive note though, we do have migration surging, so that's expected to reduce wage pressure, Bloomberg economics thinks that the is not going to follow through on all 125 basis points of tightening that's forecast for 2023, maybe 50 basis points in the February meeting. And that is it. So much like the fed and open question of how much more tightening is coming. So New Zealand's economy is pretty much fully opened, right? Are they seeing evidence that tourists are beginning to come back? I know that the economy there is heavily reliant on tourism. Yeah, some evidence and that is one of the most important sources of foreign exchange as you point out. But again, much with many developed economies, if you want to take a holiday in New Zealand, you might want to talk to your bank manager first. If is out of control and from speaking personally, I was hoping to head back there over Christmas, but from Sydney to Christchurch return. It's a AU$1000. Which is two hour flight, right? Yeah, yeah, just under three hours flight. New Zealand is closer to Sydney than Perth as it's pretty much like flying into state. So that is an eye watering amount of money for such a short trip. You can get to parts of Asia for less than that. So that might be proving to be as something of a deterrent to tourists, at least for the next few quarters. So you're staying put in Sydney, no doubt. Yeah, I am. All right. Okay, we're going to roll on here on daybreak as you will check in with Ed Baxter in a little while to get

"COVID cases spiked in the capital. The New Zealand government says the country faces recession next year. We had Japan October core machine orders rising 5.4% month on month. That was more than the 1.8%, but the sentiment index of large manufacturers in Japan deteriorated for the fourth consecutive quarter at Hong Kong's large manufacturing index at 7 down from 8 analysts had forecasted decline all the way to 6. And that is a Bloomberg business flash. Let's get headline news with Ed Baxter and San Francisco head. All right, thank you very much, Brianna Senate bill backed by bipartisan group, including Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer and Republican Tom cotton is seeking to cut off Huawei technologies and other Chinese 5G technology firms from the U.S. financial system. China's postponed the central economic work conference for fear it could become a super spreader event, meanwhile, China is bracing for a major COVID outbreak as it reopens. India is now confirming the clash between its and Chinese troops last week, defense minister ranjan Singh, telling parliament a first encounter in about two years, Vietnam and donors led by the European Union are nearing a $15 billion climate financing package and Sam bankman free to charge with 8 counts of fraud of bail denied extradition hearing in February, U.S. prosecutor in the case says it's one of the largest frauds ever inflected inflicted on the public. "Not necessarily a place where I will see a relative posting something political. Like on Facebook. I think that's a major reason why it's been ignored. It is Google's done a fairly effective job. They don't share much financial data about YouTube, they've made, I talked to researchers and they make it very difficult for researchers to have external data to study the platform. And I think in some ways that is why it's had less scrutiny. I mean, it also Facebook has made some very public flops. And YouTube is a savvier, more mature company. And is able to successfully avoid that scrutiny. And I think that's what's changing. We saw congressional hearing this week with social media platforms that included YouTube about Homeland Security and national security threats. So might you expect more intense scrutiny then in the months and years to come? My hope with the book is that the people pay more attention given just how powerful and influential the company is. I think right now TikTok has taken both the attention of youth culture and given its Chinese ownership a bit more scrutiny. But I don't think YouTube is going away. So I imagine it will in the future. It's not going away. In fact, YouTube has transformed media and culture and politics, what societal responsibility do you think YouTube has today? And how are executives there grappling with that question? They've talked a lot about this concept of responsibility, they've changed their rules around hate speech and around online harassment. And around child safety. And I think they still have a tremendous responsibility there. The book uses the Christchurch shootings and example the New Zealand government

"I don't have it in front of me. I might find it later for the show notes, but you can get the equivalent of ecstasy. It's an analog. It has basically the same effects. And it was supported by the New Zealand government. Then the media got hold of it. And the media started attacking it and saying, this is horrible, this is evil. Blah blah blah blah. And it's true to both sides. Then the government just bowed to pressure and banned it. Which is odd though, because obviously there's this and some drugs certainly are bad, obviously. And when they have an addictive quality, it does create a lot of problems around the world. But at the same time, it's like alcohol, for example, is a drug. An alcohol is widely distributed widely socially acceptable. Well, I was more interested in the mechanisms and the networks of how it all works. I'm not super interested in people taking drugs and what it does to them. For this specific side of things. I'm interested in psychoactive substances and we had experiences. But for people that want to get high in heroin, I don't give a shit about what they experience. Well, practically nothing. But I am interested in the criminal networks that operate behind the scenes to get stuff into the country, how the dark web is essentially a backbone of all of it now. And how these dads online on the dock web with their mortgages and their kids making millions and millions of dollars, selling these chemical derivatives, they just order online from China, which are technically legal. Well, legal some places illegal other places. It's very complex and amazing investigation. What have you got coming out? Well, I'm going to go. Yeah, I'm going to go into this new book by Lee brickley, and I must say I'm particularly fascinated by it because the whole concept of poltergeist has always really piqued my interest. But outside of the Enfield poltergeist and some of the stuff that's happened through Massachusetts over the years, that particular case. I mean, there's not a lot of poltergeists like major poltergeist stories out there from recent times. Some really modern times. This thing happened in October of last year. So immediately, I've just like, wow, I've got to look into this. And I will say that there are a few elements of this story that a very cliche from a poltergeist story kind of perspective. You've been heads. Not exactly spinning heads, but you've got levitations. You've got teleportation. You've got the power of Christ compels you crucifixes. That kind of stuff thrown in. But hey, look, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you're holding up a crucifix, gets rid of a poltergeist, but they go right ahead. But I'm particularly fascinated by Lee's work because we've looked into his research over the years. He covered, remember the pig man. I could do the stupid I forget..

"Let's continue now with today's newspapers I'm delighted to say joining me down the line is in Anderson chairman of the international communications agency. Cicero group good morning. Good morning. Lovely to have you with us. Let's begin with a manual Macron refusing to boycott the Winter Olympics diplomatically. Unsurprising some might suggest? Yeah, so this is a piece in the monde, he's pretty much flat rejecting the approach taken by the U.S., Canada, Australia, and the UK so far, basically saying that they won't send politicians, not their sports competitors, but that they won't send politicians to the Winter Olympics. He says it's essentially an empty gesture. If you're sending the athletes, what's the point really? And well, actually, he's saying, let's see what Europe says. He's trying to play this on a sort of pan European way. And of course, once again, Macron's looking to play things just a little bit differently to many of his international partners. Well, when you see the countries which have decided to boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics diplomatically, you look at the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom. Three countries which possibly France isn't that friendly with at the moment. Well, that's right. And let's just see how the EU takes its Q or not from Macron in that regard. All eyes probably now on Germany and Olaf Schultz does he take his cue from Macron or does he actually decide to lean toward the U.S. Canada and UK approach? It's going to be a really interesting litmus test as to whether or not the change in dynamic in Germany changes anything. I mean, Schultz of course himself has talked about wanting to keep the door open very much in terms of the relationship with China. So yeah, once again, sport being used to play geopolitics. There's an amazing story coming out of New Zealand, which reminds me of a short story written by garrison keeler called. I think it's called the end of the trail where they talk about the last cigarette smokers in America and how they were hunted out by S.W.A.T. patrols. Is this what's about to happen in New Zealand in? Well, this is really quite a groundbreaking story. The New Zealand government Jacinda Ardern, in a place in very much her own in her own way gained an awful lot of respect globally as to how she's reacted through the COVID pandemic. And while the New Zealand plan her plan, the smoke free 2025 action plan, it's starting point is it'll ban those aged over 14 from ever purchasing tobacco product. So basically, if you were born by the end of next year, if you were born after 2008, you simply won't be able to ever buy tobacco products in New Zealand. Now this story in the New Zealand Herald its main the main New Zealand paper pointing to whether or not of course complete ban is going to smoking underground and creating mass black market, but it's a pretty bold move. I think it's probably the first place in the world that has said that any age cohort is just not going to be able to buy tobacco at all. They're going to they're making a very, very good point about this about the creation of a black market, or duty free from other countries are suddenly going to find themselves with an enormous opportunity for people going back into New Zealand. I mean, how realistic a prospect is this? It's possible. The government clearly have to be thinking about how to beef up its customs and border checks. Whilst putting in this move, I mean, clearly, while the pandemic is in place, there's not a lot of international movement in and out of New Zealand anyway. And this plan is due to come in by the end of the ban is due to come in by the end of 2023. So a black market is entirely possible, but in terms of a bold public health move, it's a headline. Final story, a great headline as well. Starbucks workers in Buffalo are joining a union. Yeah, this is fascinating. This is the first store in the 9000 or so stores that Starbucks has a cross North America that is voted to unionize is voted by a 9 to 8 margin in terms of all the baristas in that store. Two other stores were voting at the same time. It looks like another 1 may have voted for unionization. Another one rejecting a unionization, but unionization across American businesses across global American businesses back on the agenda for the first time in years. It's just about 20 years ago where all the polling demonstrated that being part of the union was not the preference of most Americans. It was less than 50%. The latest polling, The New York Times and The Washington Post appointing to this morning, indicating that 70% of Americans think being part of a union is a good thing. Maybe a pandemic has changed the perceptions of a lot of Americans as to whether or not they want to combine whether or not unity is strength. In Anderson, thank you so much for joining us as ever. I represent science, all of that means you can not differ with us. Get it? That's all that. Why are those statements made? You differ with the New Zealand government, that means you're telling lies. That's the statement here. You differ with the Democratic Party. It's misinformation. So declares Twitter, by the way, apparently the new Twitter head, Jack Dorsey is leaving, the new Twitter head is even less committed to free speech. I read that, I don't know if it's true. I wouldn't be surprised. The when you believe you have all truth, which the left believes. Whether it's science or anything else, then clearly there is no room for misinformation. They declare whatever they differ with misinformation. PolitiFact lied about me. In saying that I told the lie about the I don't even know how can I tell a lie? It was an opinion. I said that. A couple of weeks ago or I wrote and spoke on the air about the greatest pariahs since slavery in the United States, and by the way, not just the United States of the unvaccinated. I don't know why that's even controversial. Doesn't deny the sufferings, and I even specifically spoke of the sufferings of gays during aids. There were no laws passed. That's right. What is it? You're right. Just today. Let's see.

That's the starting point. So i think we need a complete constitutional reform Because this is just this is treason. And it's it's arbitrary. I think the lawyers called legislative did probations is when you have arbitrary restrictions oh confiscations imposed by the legislature. "Won't to wet collaborative late. There's lots of activity like The nasa sophia infrared aircraft comes to new zealand to observe the southern sky in on the aviation side. There's been a lot of support for Experimental testing there's been balloon testing and large scale the testing and things like that. in fact. there's there's even a recent agreement in in the area near christ church for a a new current space testing area out near earnings flat and so there's a support across the board in the areas that make this a friendly place. in fact we have talked to several people in moving companies here from europe that they just couldn't find a place in europe for their flight tests and they wanted to come to new zealand just develop their airspace. systems is there. danger guys could become too crowded. There's potential there. The i mean certainly We're talking just in the aviation and High altitude areas Right now it's not much traffic for the it's much less than other parts of the world but and then of course satellite orbits a global. And so there's the other concern about the increasing number of satellites that are in the sky that have both plus minus aspects of that with the stratosphere getting more crowded and the danger of space debris increasing. We need to know where it all is. So it's incredible this point tracking facilities being set up Nina esp and that's really contributing to how well we know the positions of all of the things around the earth and if you're launching satellites You really need to know the information because the last thing you want to happen is a collision which would be a disaster. I small piece of debris just a couple of centimeters in size has the energy of appiano moving at sixty miles per hour. We are often called. Google maps of space. We're building the base layer map of the low-earth orbit environment. It's a dynamic map. It's changing it. Shows where the satellites are where the debris is where the new satellites are going. And we're satellites are being taken out of orbit. The company labs in based in california has four radar tennis around the world and one of them on this on the south island here is eland and they have a unique partnership with the government in new zealand. provide tracking for anything launched from new zealand is part of the new zealand's obligations to minimize space debris under us agreements. And i'm really impressed by what new zealand has been able to do in this area by partnering with a commercial satellite tracking provider there. Actually i i hear about my friends that are connected with the us tracking system in the the us military and and they're stuck using computers from the nineties and struggling to keep up with new satellites whereas leo labs is providing really modern tracking to the new zealand government. And so i think a couple of new zealanders laptops has about the same capabilities the us space force in this area. Many many years ago. I used to work on the hubble telescope program nassar and you know you travel around america and goes all these amazing places and see incredible engineering and i to say what i moved down to. The you know few years ago if you told me. I'd be seeing similar activity here and using and that's gonna happen but he has an and the pace of is quite impressive And these are serious companies. They don't like small up. Some of them are doing quite big business and i are actually really contributing to the local economy in the regions of new zealand. Then again that's another aspect of this all of the developments. The senate in auckland or wellington they are out in the regions and there are opportunities out in the region for people to set up these new businesses. And of course the other thing we go through member is the opportunities to launch spacecraft here There's not much to south of us. So if you launch threat south you pass over any populated countries until you get on the other side of antarctica. So that means if your rockets do crash. They don't do any damage so again. Museums are pretty good. Place to be able to launch rockets into space attracting people from i think it is. Yes and i think given the amazing performance of this country during kofi Living in new zealand become a lot more attractive than the last year or so And i think if you couple that with economy that is Willing to kind of adapt the relative ease of access to government and the people who make decisions it does make this country a very interesting place for folks to come and work and you can see that. There's a lot of investors trying to move down to new zealand at the moment. And and of course a lotta talented engineers and would love to work down here in this part of the world. I think the thing we go to think about here though. Is you know the future museums. Economy exporting milk to china. You'll probably making you know certain amount per kilogram but if we stop exporting ideas to the wool. The the property that we're doing is really valuable so you know instead of paying whatever is maybe sixty seventy one hundred bucks for kilo of of milk to go somewhere. We might send kilo of high tech stuff. That's worth tens of thousands of dollars and there's real opportunities. I think here in the new economy and of course able services economy. We need to education system that generates lots of people have the talent that we need in this new era and not just scientists and engineers. You know there's also ways that folks office can contribute towards this as well designers and that kind of thing so I do think all of this activity does mean that it's up to us now to join education system. He can produce people who can serve this new economy. That's all for today. I'm alexia russell. Thanks to ian griffin erik. dalstrom and maria. Lord of the Rings Series Will Cost Amazon $465m
"Over at amazon is worth from. It's a story from late last week. The retail giant's highly anticipated. Lord of the rings will cost an eye popping four hundred and sixty five million dollars for its first season. According to the new zealand government's official information act filing. Yeah i'm gonna say that again one more time just to let it sink. Four hundred sixty five million dollars for one season of television and we don't even know how many episodes it's going to be. My understanding is that that figure includes the acquisition of the rights. So i don't know that anyone really knows what that figure entails because we reported that the rights alone were north of two hundred and fifty million dollars just for global rights alone to the property. But that's still an awful lot for one season of television usually those rights. You amortize the cost. Over the life of the series so that the first season drops down cetera. The shows already been renewed for season two. I think it's already you know. The plan is for five seasons in spinoff. so are they trying to amortize. That cost over. Are they gonna shoot seasons one and two back to back and this is quote unquote one-season a television that stretches over into two seasons of of television and and and the budget is that for two full seasons. I don't know either way. That is an eye popping number and if it doesn't include global rights even if you take out that to fifty a crazy amount of money it's still like more than more than double the cost of what a season of game of thrones would cost it's astounding. It is a tremendous amount of money and a tremendous amount of money for a show which has no costly above the line talent. It's not like the eight hundred and fifty people who are starring in that show are making a million dollars per episode. They are being paid. One would presume a reasonable amount. Let's just say eight a non impressive amount because they're not stars. You're not spending this money on cast. You're spending this money on on rights and production sets and costumes and and the global rights like we talked about. You know like yeah this. This number doesn't make any sense to me. It's a lot of money this a lot

Tribe Gives Personhood To Klamath River
"A native American tribe has granted person hood to a river in northern California making it the first known river in North America to have the same legal legal rights as a human at least under tribal law the your tribe based near the southern border of Oregon conferred the new status on the Klamath River for years water management Richmond Systems and climate change have led to lower water flows in the Klamath and fewer salmon one of the main food sources. We're joined now by your tribe general counsel Cordola's who is also a tribal member. Welcome to the program. I agree. Thank you for having me. What does the status of person hood mean for river what it means is it gives the right to the river to exist to flourish and to naturally evolve and a right to a stable climate free free from human caused climate change impacts. What that means is that anytime the rivers hurt for example. There's a toxic pollutant pollutant that is gets into the water of the river we could then bring cause of action against that polluter to protect the river so would New York tribunal to take legal action against polluters of the river further upstream beyond their territory well that gets into some jurisdictional issues but we certainly would make the argument what prompted this. Why did they decide to take this action. One the euro people have always lived along the banks. Thanks of the Klamath River and in our creation story the Creator told us that as long as we lived in a balance with the natural world world we would never want for anything and we live that way for a very long time of course after the invasion in the eighteen hundreds in in development occurred outside of our control. That balance has been thrown off. I understand that the situation when the salmon though has really prompted a lot out of concern. Can you explain a little bit about what's going on and how it's been going this year. The salmon runs are the lowest they've ever been even this year. It was anticipated that the returning salmon runs. We're going to be strong but they never showed up. We don't know where they are. We have been doing all all we can to protect the river and you know working within existing legal frameworks and it's not enough we should note that this is not the first body of water to be granted. Person Hood Toledo Ohio voters approved a referendum to grab person hood for Lake Erie in February although that is being challenged lynched. Is this an idea. That's gaining traction. Ah Beyond Native Americans absolutely the New Zealand government granted rights of a river in really what I think this is a reflection of a change of societal values so we're in a climate crisis and we need new tools tools to respond to that crisis and in this country right now corporations have rates as a person and that's because historically our country valued commerce and so I think it's a logical next step in this era of climate change to give the same kind of of legal recognition to the natural environment and to nature. That's Amy Cordola's. She's the general counsel for the Europe tribe in Northern California. Thank you so

It's a watershed moment for gun control in New Zealand
"New Zealand's government has agreed to toughen gun laws seventy two hours off to the country's worst attack on its soil in the past half an hour. The prime minister into Auden said the decisions around gun reforms have been made in principle and that more will be announced within the week. But giving an update in Wellington. She said the mass shootings have uncovered some difficult truths for many New Zealanders. Now in this case, the primary suspect here the person who has been arrested for this terrorist attack was not a citizen of New Zealand. However that is not to say that there on all those who live in New Zealand who hold values, and ideas and use language that is completely counter to what the vast majority of New Zealand is the leave. And so I don't think that we can that we can ignore that we cannot ignore that. The country's gun control laws have been heavily scrutinized in the wake of the mass shootings on Friday which killed fifty people and injured dozens at two mosques in Christ Church. It's not the first time. There has been attempt to change in twenty six new students. Police association sent a stark warning gun control laws were inadequate and could even result in a mass killing today. Gun lobbyists warned against a knee jerk reaction, the council of firearms owners, Nicole Mckee spoke to New Zealand's news hub, we have quick well with politicians and was police on doing improvements to Allie. Relation. We did that in nineteen ninety nine. We did it in two thousand and six we did it again in two thousand and twelve so we do have an effective system. That's worked well for thirty years, but something's gone wrong. Here we need to find out what data's and we need to change that this was affected. Everybody is the whole country all grieving but New Zealand, firearms, license diners and not the terrorists. We are legitimate owners, but something has gone wrong here, we acknowledged that.
