Carrying the big lift in NASDAQ futures follows earnings from two tech giants. Let's begin with Amazon. Those shares are surging by 12% the company reported revenue that top estimates and gave a strong sales forecast for the current quarter. Bloomberg intelligence senior retail analyst poonam goyal says it's quite a different story from another high profile retailer. We were not worried about what we saw earlier this week with Walmart taking down guidance as we had thought that Amazon has a different customer base. Amazon does a target the low income consumer. So we didn't think Walmart's votes would bleed into Amazon. And that's exactly what we saw today. Bloomberg intelligence analysts put them goyle says Amazon added full and part time jobs at the slowest pace since 2019 in an effort to cut costs. Well, Nathan Apple shares also higher they're up more than two and a half percent. The company's revenue and profit narrowly topped estimates with iPhone sales holding up better than expected. Tom Giles is an executive technology editor for Bloomberg news. The market took away that Apple so far is weathering the downturn relatively well. And they even though they missed on a couple of their different products, they did surpass Wall Street's projections on the iPhone, which is their biggest product, all important product. Bloomberg Tom Giles says the iPad also performed better than feared, though other products including max and wearables fell short of projections. One of the flip side Karen shares of Intel are down 9 and a half percent in early trading, the chip maker's profit and sales missed estimates, and it's also slashing forecasts, more from Bloomberg's Charlie pellet. The world's biggest maker of computer processors was weighed down by a steep drop in demand for data center chips and a steep decline in PC shipments. After two years of growth, spending on laptop and desktop machines is declining quickly, as rising inflation is leading consumers to shy away from large purchases. The market for chips that power PCs is still Intel's biggest source of revenue and the cash needed to fund an ambitious attempt by CEO pat gelsinger to restore the company to semiconductor industry leadership. In New York, Charlie palette Bloomberg daybreak. Right, Shirley, thank you. Well, we have another stock getting hammered this morning. Roku shares are down more than 24%. The maker of streaming TV devices reported disappointing second quarter results, Roku said advertisers are pulling back on spending due to economic concerns. The earnings continue today, Karen, with big oil in the spotlight, Bloomberg's Jeff Bellinger reports ExxonMobil and Chevron post quarterly results this morning. There could be a lot to like when ExxonMobil reports, Bloomberg intelligence says the company likely saw a substantial increase in net earnings from its refining unit if that drove a major improvement in free cash flow it could mean faster share buybacks, refining improvements at Chevron likely lag behind ExxonMobil, BI says the company's balance sheet may be in a net cash position before the end of the year if it continues to hold back on share, repurchases. Jeff Bellinger, Bloomberg daybreak. All right, Jeff, thank you while turning to the economy now. There's a key report coming up before we wrap up the week. The University of Michigan issues its national consumer sentiment index for July at 10 a.m. Wall Street time, and Bloomberg's Vinny down giudice has more. The prayer report covering early July showed long-term inflation expectations declined at that time at least the consumer surveyed anticipated prices would rise at an annual rate of 2.8% over the next 5 to ten years. Today, we're pushing 9% inflation. Overall consumer sentiment is suffering with the University of Michigan index at historic lows. Any doubt should ice Bloomberg daybreak. Okay, Vinny, thanks to that sentiment report comes the day after the latest GDP data fired up the debate over whether the U.S. has slipped into a recession. One top official says no, let's get the latest live from Bloomberg's we need a young good morning gradina. Good morning, Nathan. Treasury secretary Janet Yellen is rejecting the notion that the U.S. has entered a recession. She points to continued job creation, gains in consumer spending, strong household finances, and growth in business. Although she acknowledges a slowdown is needed to tame inflation. We know there are challenges ahead of us, growth is slowing globally, inflation remains unacceptably high. And it's this administration's top priority to bring it down. Treasury secretary Janet Yellen says she remains optimistic about the country's ability to fight inflation. Live in New York, I'm ready to young Bloomberg day break. Try ready to thank you. We also have news on the geopolitical front this morning. Presidents Biden and Xi Jinping have now agreed to set up an in person meeting at Bloomberg's head Baxter has the details. This could be interpreted as a positive sign that dialog could remain open, but tensions remain high with words like constructive left out of the readouts. White House spokesman Cara and Jean Pierre says Taiwan was a major issue. President Biden underscored that the United States policy has not changed and that the United States strongly opposes unilateral efforts to change the status. Also mention of the readouts efforts to fight climate change and protect the global macro economy. In San Francisco, I'm Ed Baxter Bloomberg daybreak. Okay, Ed, thanks, S&P futures up 30 points. assault on the U.S. capitol Charlie pellet Bloomberg radio Global news 24 hours a day on air and on Bloomberg quick take powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts in more than 120 countries I'm Susanna Palmer This is Bloomberg This is Bloomberg Wall Street week with David Weston from Bloomberg radio Zero carbon emissions It was all the talk this week at the cop 26 meetings in Glasgow With European Commission president von der leyen urging faster action We all must speed up our race to net zero We're running out of time And President Biden saying the United States will lead the way The United States is not only back at the table but hopefully leading by the power of our example My administration is working over time to show that our climate commitment is action not words But if we're going to have any hope of making real progress on emissions it will take more than governments It will take a massive effort of the private sector Bank of America's Brian moynihan says banks like his are feeling the pressure There's a lot of pressure on banks because our clients are demanding us Our investors are demanding this The politicians of worlds demanding this And Luke Ellis of the man group says that with more guidance the private sector and especially hedge funds like his can help get us where we need to go And this is really anybody that's investing in liquid stocks So you're an owner of a company And that gives you the chance to engage with management And to make sure that they have a serious plan not just the sort of fluffy and waving plant What matters is people with actual plans actually move on actual things going on And hedge funds do a good job can do a good job of engaging with companies Lasagna is on the front lines in arranging acquisitions emerges also managing nearly $300 billion in assets So when it comes to figuring out how the lofty goals of cop 26 May translate into the real world there's nobody better than lazard fragrance We're joined now by the chairman and CEO of mister Ken Jacobs Welcome to Wall Street Thank you Have you here Thank you It's pleasure to be here So we've heard these waffle goals Every signing up for them But what does it mean in the real world As you're doing deals as you're managing assets is it changing what you do On the asset management side of the business absolutely That's changing rapidly On the advisory side of the business which is arranging mergers and acquisitions that's on the so to speak We're seeing the beginning of it but it's not quite there yet Let me speak to the asset management side to begin with One has to step back and realize this has been in play now for several years The first thing that happened is that core demographic that drives activity in the economy started spending their values That was a couple of years ago in three four or 5 years ago in the United States longer in Europe Over the last couple of years everybody it has shifted now so that the same demographic is starting to invest their values And that's playing through in the asset owners and it's really having a big impact on the asset management business So when you talk about investing in assets is it defense or offense And by that I mean this It's one thing to say I don't want to invest for example in a fossil fuels company Okay I get that But what about a firmly investing in a green steel company I think in the beginning it's going to be defensive Because at this moment in time there's very little that kind of ties green performance whether you are your emissions policy or social policies There's very little that actually ties that to performance in the stock market or cost of capital That's at its very early stages But scoring companies is there So I'd say at this moment in time we're probably doing I would say most of asset management is investing defensively around ESG and I think that's going to shift over time We heard from a former vice president Al Gore this week saying that we have something of a I think he called a climate subprime crisis coming because there's trillions of dollars in assets in coal and in fossil other fossil fuels that may not.

"More and more people across the country are getting vaccinated every day as states continue to expand eligibility requirements but vaccine distribution for incarcerated. Americans still lags behind the general population and that's despite the fact that prisons and jails have been hotbeds of outbreaks during the pandemic. So far there been more than three hundred and ninety thousand covid nineteen cases among incarcerated people in the united states largely because of insufficient medical care and people being able to socially distance while living in such tight quarters. That's according to data from the marshall project to recent rulings. Aim to change this on monday. A new york state supreme court justice issued a ruling requiring new york to immediately begin offering vaccines to all incarcerated people that ruling echoes a similar one made last month in oregon. I'm tansy nevada. And a look at the uneven vaccine roll out for incarcerated people nationwide is where we begin today on the takeaway. Nicole lewis is a staff writer for the marshall project focusing on felony disenfranchisement nicole. Welcome to the show. Thanks for having me. On and lauren brings. Rubinstein is an assistant professor of social medicine at university of unc chapel hill and head of the covid nineteen prison project lauren. Welcome back to the show. Thanks for having me. It'll start with you lauren. Before we talk about what are we looking at when it comes to case numbers and deaths in prisons and jails national wide most recently so we continue to see a a rise in cases disproportionate to the general population. There have been about four four hundred thousand cases nationwide about twenty percent of the population of incarcerated. People have had kovin Over twenty five hundred deaths one of the real problems though as as we start to focus on vaccination we're seeing less and less data and so it's hard to tell in recent weeks what cases look like because states have been becoming more opaque relevant to what's happening behind the walls nicole. We're talking about vaccine. Roll out here but I it seems like it. This population has not been a priority Or it's been varied from state to state. Yeah that's right and so. There are several states that put incarcerated people in phase one kicked off in january massachusetts new jersey for example but then there are several states for for which we still actually don't know where incarcerated people are going to fall so folks in florida have no information about when they'll be back stated Large systems like texas only just started vaccinating people a few weeks ago and so this is just very mixed across the country and still very unclear and nicole. We we at the top. That new york state Just issued a ruling where vaccines should be offered to. Its entire incarcerated population that includes jails in prisons. How long is that gonna take so. It can really depend rate. New york is looking at about fifty thousand people incarcerated here and so you're not a huge number but not a small number either so it's really important to remember that vaccine allocation of vaccines go is determined by the state and so if they weren't figured into the plan or weeks ago months ago that those vaccines may not be available. It may not be ready to be directly shipped into the prisons rape and so prisons are also spread out across the so. It could take some time before. We're able to see a robust vaccination campaign behind bars but it is decidedly good news. Lauren was listening to a report today. on a sister program here public radio and they were talking about homeless populations Being vaccinated and they're seeing much success with the johnson. Johnson vaccine because it's a one shot Only it doesn't require two shots and it also can be stored. requires less rigorous Storage requirements. In other words. You can put it in a refrigerator. Not something like madeira or pfizer. That require very specific storage temperatures. When we talk about what hype vaccine could be used in for incarcerated population. Is that what they're considering or do. We not know yet. So it's pretty variable across the country. Many states started early. Vaccination did you spicer moderna and figured out how to do that. mostly in partnership with departments of public health locally or at the state level. We have seen some states. Start to use the johnson and johnson Vaccine i think all three are on the table As you mentioned. The johnson johnson vaccine is is really great because It's just requires one shot not to. That's really important in the context of high turnover carson spaces such as jails And so i think. I think we're seeing it all on the table but johnson and johnson does help us overcome some of the barriers that are inherit to jails and prisons lauren. What about what about when it comes to testing. Are there still. Is there any type of rigorous testing. Happening in incarceration for incarcerated people and particularly in places like jails whereas you said the turnover rate is quite high. Yes so Has with everything. We're seeing a lot of variability across the country. We have some jails in this country that are highly resource and some that are very Know lack resources and have virtually no testing on board We have seen more testing happened recently than happened. You know say a year ago at the beginning of the pandemic. We've also seen uptake of Surveillance methods using rapid antigen tests. And so we've seen more testing then in the past still not enough adequate testing but we've seen some targeted populations such as Transfers from disability facility or new intakes. Ron release silver seeing some testing plans See light but definitely not as much as we would've wanted nicole. You've done a lot of reporting around this issue One of the things you've reported on was you surveyed incarcerated people earlier this month to get a sense of how they were feeling about getting the vaccine. What stood out to you in their responses. That's right. I think the biggest thing we found was that this year behind bars during a pandemic were most prisons. Have been in lockdown. People haven't been able to see their families has been so hard on incarcerated people that it is creating some interest in encouraging people to get vaccinated so many people were saying that they see this shot as a potential way of getting off a block down and having some returned to normalcy. And so that's a really important an interesting finding on the flip side of that nicole. You also did reporting on vaccine hesitancy except this time we're talking about corrections officers. The people who are working in the Facilities tell us about what you found there. That's right and so on this side. We found sort of widespread has an refusal in some cases to get vaccinated and so the reasons for that were really quite varied on one side. We definitely had groups of people who believed in conspiracy theories about the vaccine About what it might do to them. you know there's limited information. I think it was really important for some of the sources that we spoke to to point out that in our correctional officers are not alone in this rape. Police officers some nurses rate have refused the vaccine at higher rates confusing public health officials. These folks are on the front lines But in many cases corrections officers have a little education tend to lean right right and we've seen national polls have shown us that republicans People with lower education tended to be more hesitant rate. And so there's just a number of reasons for why this is happening and Actually my biggest concern there. That the thing that really stands out to me is that in some cases it was interfering with people's decision making around whether or not they should get vaccinated This is a community of people who don't have a lot of don't have really much or any connection to the outside world. They can't do research on their own. And so what corrections officers.

Former Prosecutor Linda Fairstein Says 'When They See Us' 'Is Full Of Distortions'
"This Netflix series that has come out called when they see us. And it's about the central park joggers, the central park jogger and the central park, five. So this is long been a hot point of contention in New York City tunnel from famously called for the death penalty to be applied to the central park five. There's a group of five lack men, who were basically, accused of rape of a jogger. And then later there was DNA evidence, a person came forward and made an admission that he was the person who committed the rape only his DNA was found on the woman, the way that this has been taken by the press is that none of these other five people were involved in anything bad, and all of this was basically black men being railroad in New York City for no reason. Well, now Linda fairstein, who's a prosecutor in the case has a piece in the Wall Street Journal that is. It's pretty devastating to this narrative here's what she talked about. She says at about nine pm, April nineteenth nineteen thousand nine a large group of young men gathered on the corner of one hundred and ten th street and Fifth Avenue for the purpose of robbing and beating innocent people in central park. There are more than thirty riders the women in the win the woman known as the central park jogger Tricia, mainly was not the only victim, eight others were attacked, including two men were beaten so savagely that required hospitalization for head injuries, reporters and filmmakers have explored this story countless times from numerous perspectives. Almost always focusing on five attackers one female jogger but each has missed the larger picture of what happened that terrible night, a write in the dark that resulted in the apprehension of more than fifteen teenagers who set upon multiple victims that associate path Natasha's race confessed in two thousand two to the rape of malay-, and that the district attorney consequently, vacated the charges against the five after they had served their sentences had led some of these reporters and filmmakers to assume the prosecution had no basis upon which to charge the five suspects in nineteen eighty nine. So it is with filmmaker Annan's Guarany in the net flicks mini series, when they see us a series so full of destroy. Falsehoods is to be an outright fabrication. It shouldn't have been hard for Mr. Verney to discover the truth. The facts of the original case are documented in one hundred seventeen page decision by New York state supreme court Justice Thomas Galligan in sworn testimony, given in two trials and affirmed by two appellate courts, and in sworn depositions more than ninety five witnesses, including the five themselves. Instead, she has written and utterly false narrative involving an evil mastermind me falsely accused the five I was one of the supervisors who oversaw the team that prosecuted, the teenagers apprehended after that horrific night of violence, Mr.
