"Very active in, in getting companies to establish pension funds, while pushing to change New York's corporate culture. What are you doing specifically that regard? Well, there are a lot of issues as trustee of the state pension fund. We have one point one million New Yorkers who are dependent on our keeping that fun, strong and doing smart investments. But I've always taken the position that it's not just about making money, although that's the first priority. But we'd like to see that the money that we invest in companies that they're they're doing right by their by their employees. So there are many issues that we focus on issues relating to climate change very topical issue of making sure that, that risk is being assessed in the business. Plans companies were involved in diversity, making sure that the boards of directors of corporations reflect the people of our country. So advocating for more. Racial and gender. Diversity on boards has been particular priority. Women are severely underrepresented on boards as people of color. So trying to get boards to adopt policies to ensure an active recruitment of, of, of diverse group of people, the evidence shows when you have a diverse board you have smarter outcomes, a recent initiative, we've involved with his disability inclusion because we find too many corporations don't have clear policies on how people with a disability can participate in the workplace, huge percentage of disabled, people are left out of the workforce left out of employment. We need corporations to be more welcoming. So we're pressing corporations include disability as far as that workplace practices controlled Napoli we always felt that New York is the place where everybody wants to be businesses want to open here, then we had the debacle with Amazon talk about that. I mean you know. We, we learned that are places like Tennessee and Virginia New Jersey, that are very welcoming they're saying to corporations come here. You don't have to go there come here. Now that was a lost opportunity. Yeah. I that's I think an effective way to sum it up. Full disclosure Amazon is one of our biggest holdings in the pension funds. I give you that. We make money off of Amazon. I think it's fair to say, you know, you'll you look at the different perspectives and point of view. And I think it's fair to say that at the front end there could have been a better job of communicating. Right, and including community leadership in the discussion, maybe was a bit more generous than needed to be in terms of some of the incentives. But looking at it at the other end the loss of those twenty five thousand good jobs, headquarters jobs. That's a loss for New York. So I hope the lesson will be when we when we try to embark on these kinds of, of economic development. Be more inclusive and transparent from the beginning and have us all understand are as strong as our economy is. It's it's fragile and we're going to probably go through a tougher time in the next year or so with our economy, there was an article, and we both good Barclays arena. In Brooklyn and Barclays face them communists opposition of sure a Barclays didn't walk away. Right. You know, they met with community leaders in some cases, it was a hard sell, ultimately victorious because they were inclusive because they listen to others, and they dealt with the issue of housing agreement, and you look how that's transformed that neighborhood, certainly in a positive with community. Absolutely. Absolutely. Absolutely. Right. You've got to want to sit down and talk to the stakeholders because that's a huge decision. Yeah. And it I was in favor of it, because it means the decentralisation of wealth and the financial powerbase in Wall Street. Yeah. And if that's something we need here in New York City. It is that decentralisation? Well, we need a more diversified economy. And the reality is Wall Street is not as big a factor in our economy, part of his they've, they've downsized from, you know, from when we have the market collapse. In, in eight nine. So the city economy has diversified, but it needs to contain diversified tech is a big part of the future. That's how you get the young people to want to be here. So, yeah, I rabbi you're, you're right missed opportunity and, and and remembered on, you're right. We need to learn lessons from this and not repeat. It be smarter about the next opportunity that will cause they will be other opportunities folks want to be in New York corporations want to be in New York the budget. Now, you know, money, coming in Spanish time, how sound are we this time of year where that's the big focus and, and back in January, the governor, and I had had a press conference to announce that we, we were down some two point three billion dollars lower than projected revenues as I call it at the time that the, the, the, the strongest revenue shock that we'd had in a long time for the state. So the governor had to readjust his his expectations in the budget proposal. There are a lot of needs out there. So many New Yorkers are, you know, whether it's on health care education. Wanting to see those needs met. But we're just not going to have as much money as we thought we were going to have to deal with all those needs when we lose an Amazon, when that situation walks away from us, we pay a price for again. Long-term the kind of revenue that would have been generated. Yeah. I mean short term, our challenges, the governor's right to point out, we're dealing with the after effects of the federal tax changes the cap on unsalted. The economy is probably headed to a slower, growth mode, hopefully, not a no growth motor recession. But all of those factors changing in taxpayer behavior that's impacting us right now but all the more reason for caution as far as spending, but also planting, those seeds like that Amazon deal would have been for the future. We can't we can't stand still we need to continue to grow. You know something that control. The said you're a nice guy, you're gentlemen, everybody knows that why would a young person today? Wanna go into that. Political arena, given the divisiveness the denigration that goes on. Why would I want to consider public service? Yeah, it's a tough question, and I probably have a tougher time answering that question, you know, that I would have a few years ago because of that, that polarization that's out there. But my answer is you have to be an optimist, you have to have faith, and in fact, arc, our system of government will produce the best result over time. And the reality is, we need more citizens to be engaged. And that's certainly starts with our youngest citizens. Look, the reality is that the ones that have the most at seic because the decisions we make today. I mean still gonna fuck me. I'm in my sixties. I'm not going anywhere anytime soon. But, but, you know, for someone in their twenties. The decisions made today on all these big issues, it's going to be with them for a lifetime. And, and so, I think we need to encourage and nurture and mentor, too often, you know, the political establishment says you're young person. Wait, your turn wait awhile, and I think what's happening. Young people. Come forward saying, well, we don't really want to wait. Are we don't really like some of the things that are happening now? So I'm hoping we can get more young people, and that will be. Net benefit and we have to groom them early because they have to understand the decisions that they make early in life now being traced back. I mean, you know, going back to high school to see what you did in high school to make a decision should vote for you. Well, maybe maybe we've over done that. But that's the reality. That's exactly the reality. And it is a reminder that all of our actions have consequences as that's absolutely true. I'm asking this question for the sake of my dear rabbi friend. Tell us about the New York state common retirement fund. What is it? Potasium is a young fellow come on now. Can I have the reverend's unclaimed? Thanks. Claim his claim. We're very proud of the fact that are from that supports the retirement benefits pensions for our one point one million public employees. Retirees and beneficiaries were among the best funds out of all the state pension funds in the country will war. One of only four state pension plans has ranked in two thousand eighteen that's over ninety percent funded. So when you hear about pension funds that are in crisis have to, you know, reduce benefits our neighbor in, you know, in jersey, Illinois is an example these poorly funded pension plans. We do not have that issue that problem in New York you wanna make any announcements about. Your control. And here we go. Considering rabbinical school that I'm, I'm not pro appropriately qualified and Reverend Bernard since I've been to his church. And I, I know I could never possibly preach the way he does. So I think I'm just going to stay right where I am, as New York state controller. We are blessed to have you, you, you know, when people talk about those in public service. I always look at Thompson aptly throughout his life. He has been a selfless servant, and we have been very, very fortunate to have you representing us. Absolutely. I again your consistency is what makes the difference. Thank you. Thank you. Both. It's on your show. I, I hope you'll invite me back. Absolutely. I think things are going to keep coming up. Great. Yeah. I again, I'm one of your I'm one of your Qasim taste and I look forward to sharing many more celebrations. We met years ago, sons of Italy breath, honored us, right? Right.
