Belmont sets pace for Triple Crown, with Tiz the Law favored

"The horse racing season begins in New York today with the Belmont Stakes for the first time the triple crown starts with the Belmont Stakes because of the corona virus and it's a shortened course wanted an eight miles the first time since nineteen twenty five it won't be it's usual gruel and one and a half miles no owners or fans are allowed at the track that usually caps attendance at ninety thousand the New York racing association so Patrick McKenna tells ESPN WABC it will be different it's a different energy but so much more important to be able to to put the show on the last leg of the Triple Crown of the Kentucky Derby September fifth and the Preakness October third Julie Walker in New York

We think this is great for for racing. I've seen headlines about inconvenience. For viewers and for fans and I guess you could call it an. On Super Bowl Sunday when I turn on my TV and I went to NBC to watch the Super Bowl, and it was on Fox. I guess there was an inconvenience when it took me eight seconds to change channels, but I I found a way to make that eight seconds back since then in my life, so yeah, there's a little bit of an inconvenience, but in the at the end of the day. We think we're doing what's best for horse racing, and what's best for the New York Racing Association? Well when it comes to that portion of the equation to I As somebody. That's you know that is closely followed the the. The Association and you know the the you know. The franchise debate predated the OH. You're coming to New York but It it's funny how? It's funny. How for years Nyerere was criticized as not being You know business savvy, and then, when trying to maximize their their signal, and and their their assets That's not good, either apparently I. It's really it is annoying to to see. It feels like it doesn't matter what. Direction or what format is taken You know when when you try to. When naira has to maximize the revenue. Possibilities at Saratoga. That wasn't good either. I it's it's very strange. How naira singled out for unique critic criticism..

"So I. Okay. Talking about Larry calm is the voice of the New York Racing Association the triple crown as well as the Breeders Cup. So since she was so quick to throw your hat into the justify accelerate argument. You brought up newspaper of record. That's an interesting. That's an interesting vote and you got to call all of newspaper of records races. And you got to call jaywalks two big ones. In this day and age in the US with turf racing. Really coming to the fore is that a race in your mind is do you just a fault dirt horse? I think that's a really close race. I think between those two as far as who the champion is. I I went back and forth and back and forth. And I ended up going with Jay walk because you know, generally, you do stick with dirt overturf, but the the way and she wants to grade once which is to me that's another another thing you have to look at night. I realize paper of record really didn't have that opportunity because there aren't really any great ones for two year old Phillies on the turf other than the breeders got. So I mean in that in that case, I mean, he can't really knocker for that. But the fact that jaywalk did win two great ones and is dirt made me pick her just by a hair over newspaper of record. But I think they'll be plenty of people voting for newspaper of record and deservedly. So and by the way in and I did say that without question justify would be my vote if. If you vote for Telerate over justify, I have absolutely no problem with that. Because I think that you know, he had that type of campaign, and, you know, people have people have different views on these things. And I, and I can I can understand that my personal view is justify and and also going with Jay walk, but and newspaper record was just I think her performances themselves were more memorable. The jaywalks. Fair enough. I'm actually on the other end of both of the arguments. Maybe we can maybe we'll meet up one night at the Meadowlands to talk about that would be terrific. What a you know, you mentioned before talking about when when you've mentioned the Baffert horses in the two year old's. This is kind of a quiet time for you. I know we get the pleasure of having you here at the big for a couple of weeks end of December end of January early February you keep your eye on things especially on that triple crown trail because of the derby, and the Preakness and all your responsibility, and you keep your eye on on the two year olds turning three this time of year. Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. I think you have to and you know, I I try to go online and take a look at what's going on. I don't watch too raises this time if you're right. I I like to sort of step away from it. I I remember the story was Trevor Denman would I always got a kick out of the fact that he when he went up to, you know, his farm and Minnesota during the time, but his jobs were not at Senate eaten Delamarre were not happening. He would just completely go away from racing..

"Podcast, very excited to report that our friends at the New York Racing Association are involved in this show, and we thank you very much for their interest in our little radio program, and I will now bring in my co host for many of these three hundred fifty. One shows normally he calls in from the planet, Texas today he's a little bit closer to home. He's. Also at the little house on the east side, he's just upstairs. I'm talking about former handicapping champion and the people's champion, Jonathan kinship JK what's up. So tell me this sponsorship. Does this mean that my shake shack in my bar tab are going to be taking era today. Part of the deal. If it's not someone made a mistake. Well, we'll we'll, we'll talk to the DR at brass about that. JK we'll see what they. We'll see what kind of a range of its can be made. We might be able to get you a hotdog the bar Bill. However, that's entirely another matter. Is this your first opening day ever up here? Chicken it is. It is. I've never made it up. I done a couple del mar opening days and completely different vibe, but very excited about it. I went out to the backside today in wrote around with the prince keen when it has golf cart. There's no better place than the backside like Saratoga in just like hearing the horses, seeing the horses, seeing the excited people. It's just it's like a thrill like no other, it's it's, it's absolutely magical. Magical is the word that I was going to use to describe it years ago before I was taken by the daily racing for him. I used to be. Little independent racing blogger who come up here for the summer mostly as an excuse to come up here for the summers. And I wrote about Saratoga opening day and said, you know, it's like it's Christmas morning for for horse players. I think that's, I think that's really what it's like. And I can only imagine that that was the feeling you got back there this morning. Absolutely not. It's it's it's, you know, it's fun every morning, but today it was just a little bit exciting that that you could just tell people are kind of buzzing around town, and that's one of the best parts about Saratoga, is that you know, I tell people, it's a, it's a, it's a little town that revolves around the race track for these four, five, six weeks. So it's it's man. It's it's. It's really, really cool. I love being here a lot of great race tracks in the world a lot of great experiences in days, but I've had some of my best and most fun days here. Let's hope that the case over the course of the next six and a half weeks of folks. If you haven't been make it a point to try to get here for at least a little bit. And if you've been considered trying to come more considered trying to make this place part of your summer, something that your summer revolves around. That's what we've done in my family, very gratified to hear my five year old daughter paren- the other day talking about coming up to sour Togan. I asked her what she wanted to do. She said. I wanna go to the racetrack every day. I've raised her well j. k. Austin's excited about it too. He's struggling with the pronunciation. He calls it Seren toga. So he's fired up about coming to Seren toga and to get some hotdogs. And he's really excited about the Dunkin donuts on the front side of the morning. He likes to go over there and grab a chocolate doughnut and enroll around. So you'll be here in a couple of weeks and and the city really works for kids. I think more than the other racetrack like this environment just seems the kind of work for like a family vibe, kind of kick Nikki outdoorsy vibe that that a lot of other race straps don't have. So it's really cool. They can run around over there and the town it self to has greed options for kids. Fantastic, children's museum, the carousel down at congress part, and, hey, if you know the right people, you can even get a little boat ride out on Saratoga lake. I know the kids enjoy doing that last year. Lots of good stuff happening. So the other.
