Bills, Vikings and Cowboys score Thanksgiving wins.

"AP sports, I'm Mike Reeves, it was a busy Thanksgiving Day in the NFL with three games on the schedule, the bills were in Detroit to meet the Lions, correspondent Denny cap, was there and has this report. Tyler bass boots a 45 yard field goal with two seconds left as the bills hang on to beat the Lions 28 25 on Thanksgiving Day, passes heroics from 8 necessary after he missed an extra point late in the fourth quarter, which allowed Lions kicker Michael batchley to sign the game on a 51 yarder with 23 seconds left. Sometimes you do everything that you write and sometimes you just get unlucky. We got unlucky, but we have a great group of guys that support me and have my back and I was able to reset and focus on the next big. Josh Allen put bounced into position to win the game, orchestrating a 48 yard drive spurred by a 36 yard pass the Stefan Diggs. Bob Stephens was on hand to watch the cowboys host the Giants. The Dallas Cowboys rallied to defeat the New York Giants 28 20 on Thanksgiving, overcoming a 13 7 deficit with 21 unanswered points in the second half. Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy says the cowboys time of possession keyed the win. Excellent division win game we had to have and I love the fire team and really what tried to break their method. And one thing I'm talking about is controlling the ball was a big focus for us today. That Prescott threw for 261 yards and two touchdowns the Dalton Schultz, CD lamb caught 6 for one O 6, while Daniel Jones threw for two 28 in a touchdown for the Giants. In Minnesota Kirk Cousins finds Adam Thielen in the end zone with 9 34 left to give the Vikings a 33 26 win over the Patriots, it was cousins third scoring strike of the game, just a phenomenal catch by him. I thought that the way he's able to catch that football, keep his feet in bounds. It just says a lot about his ability. One of the things he does really well is his body control and he's just overall athleticism and he showed it there. A great play by him. In college football, Mississippi state gets passed almost 24 22 in college troops in top 5 action number one North Carolina and number three Kansas are winners. I'm Mike Reeves, AP sports.

"You knew when the Houston Texans faced the New York Giants Sunday the running backs would be a big part of the story and they were rookie Damian pierce racking up 94 yards while saquon Barkley carried the ball a career high 35 times for a 152 The difference though when the Giants 24 16 home win was the defense forcing two turnovers and limiting the Texans to field goals in their last two possessions The giant 72 started their best since going 8 and one to start the 2008 season Matt Michael she's Rutherford

"Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw four touchdown passes in the chiefs 27 to 17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars Mahomes opened the scoring with a past to kadarius Tony who helped his way under the end zone for his first NFL touchdown It was cool to see I mean everybody was excited for him Luckily he didn't run out of bounds He's getting close there on the sideline I actually heard him as the route was going on going hey because he was wide open So that helped me out a little bit The chiefs acquired Tony from the New York Giants before the NFL trade deadline The chiefs built a 20 to nothing lead and held on for the win to improve to 7 and two Greg eklund Kansas City

Brian Flores Files Discrimination Lawsuit Against NFL

"Most interesting story of the afternoon was Brian Flores. Late last afternoon on the West Coast. It's early evening on the east coast. I'm starting to do my show prep, and I see Brian Flores, who was head coach of the Miami Dolphins for a couple of years, has just unloaded on the NFL. Alleging discrimination against black coaches. And he shot at the NFL and his complaint, and he hit it, but he really took out Bill Belichick. Because Bill Belichick thought he was texting somebody other than Brian Flores. And he was texting, I think Brian did all telling him. Hey, the fix is in. Don't worry, there's the paraphrase I don't have in front of me. Don't worry, Brian, you've got this job, you're gonna get this job. They told me you've got the job. Good for you. You're gonna do great with a giant Brian Florence was in the about to head off to interview at New York Giants land. He had to go through a charade because of the Rooney rule. The Rooney rule requires that you hire at least one African American. You interview at least one African American for every opening for GM and head coach. I think that's the Rooney rule. Now the browns have actually lived by the Rooney rule. They had Hugh Jackson as their head coach. They got the amazing Andrew Barry, who's maybe the best GM in football, both black men who are great professionals. You didn't do so well. But but you can't pretend. And I think Brian Flores, we've got to payday

Brian Flores says his Giants interview was for show to satisfy 'Rooney Rule'

"Bill Belichick, the coach of the New England Patriots, mistakenly text this guy, Brian Flores, congratulating him on getting the hit coach job for the New York Giants. The problem is, he didn't get the head coach job for the New York giant. There's another guy named Brian. So he takes the wrong guy, and by the way, it was three days before this Brian interviewed for position with the New York Giants. Apparently, complying with the Rooney rule, meaning they'd already decided who they wanted to hire. They already were going to hire another guy named Brian. Brian Belichick didn't Bill Belichick didn't know that. Congratulated this guy for getting the job. Three days before he applied for the job, interviewed for the job, which apparently had already been given to somebody else. Now, in the lawsuit, he says, I'm standing up against systemic racism in the NFL. Says this, the league is rife with systemic racism and it is akin to being run, he says, like a plantation. The Colin Kaepernick draft the skies complaint.

"And now you know maybe it's a case of you know me talking about them on a consistent basis a lot more but and you know i'm not i didn't grow up a giant fan. I'm not you know. I grew up a washington fan. So has nothing to do with phantom. I think for the giants. I think there's two massive concerns. You hit my one with jones. The other massive concern as their offensive line right. Just been a massive issue for the giants for the last eight years. Under jerry's under dave gettleman envy lies career now to daniel jones's career. The offensive line continues to be an issue for this team and the giants were expecting under kind of a normal training camp less covert restrictions as compared to a year ago. Change it offensive line coaches. We saw last. Year was colombo. Was fired during the course of the year at the giants. These young guys like matt pair where they draft in the third round two drafts ago. Andrew thomas who was the fourth overall. Pick out of georgia to drafts ago. That those guys would take a massive step forward year number two. Haven't seen in the preseason. So that's concerning when you look at the giants is because we could talk about saquon barkley kenny golladay dealing with a hamstring injury. You could talk about you know. Lack of you know lack of belief and daniel jones. I also think the other issue with the giants is the offensive line which has been a massive issue for going on well over seven years now continues to be a concern for this team and not only cajones pension for the turnovers an issue but also that giant offensive line could be a massive issue for this team this year right now. Yeah i totally agree. What what is it about the both new york football teams recently to sala a couple of days ago and then Golladay today basically both being like. Let's keep our expectations really low. Everybody like this isn't going to be. This isn't going to be great like solid on said that obviously they've had some injuries and stuff to combat disastrous off season from a luck standpoint. Not anything that could even prepare for necessarily and then golladay today. It was like yeah like the offense is going to be a work in progress. Guys like it's going to just like these teams are just absolutely brutal and what it does about your market most. I don't know what it is but cannot he. Oh you're right. And i think if you didn't laugh you'd start to cry if you're yes correct right right because i mean it's like what else you could do right so it's like or or go. Give me another beer right..

"They moved him overhead and play center yet. That kind of versatility is really useful for roster construction especially on game day where you don't need to have eight offensive lineman activated you can just get away with seven which gives you that extra spot for a special teamer or an extra wide receiver an extra extra defensive back extra edge rusher. Whatever you happen to need that day having billy price who can play all three interior spots that gives you a lot of flexibility and more of a level of comfort than what you might have had otherwise. I'm looking at week three year. The giants have the denver broncos in week. One then short turnaround. They're playing washington with that defensive front on thursday night in week two yet we could see lemieux struggle and i think at that point. The competition is odd. We could see price. Replace the lemieux at left guard. Just straight up. We could see the giants. Try nick gates at left guardian. We've seen gates play right. Guard in relief of kevin zeitler while he was hurt a couple years ago and he did that well. So maybe they move. Nick gates over the over the guard and let billy price who has most of his experience is at center but then that might depend on how quickly he's able to pick up just the past protections the the language of this offense outlook for him at guard. I but the versatility you have to keep all your options open. I think so. Certainly we can see here. Not a ton of certainty on exactly where billy price could be lining up in. It sounds like we're in pretty much consensus here that it makes the most sense for him to start out as a backup and maybe he works his way into the lineup. But because of how the giants offensive line is currently structured. We probably won't know for a bit his role on this offensive line. So that is our thoughts on the giants moved to acquire former first round offensive lineman. Billy price we will obviously be monitoring that see what happens with that price move. "new york giants" Discussed on Big Blue View

"Talking about this new york giants defense. I think that there's a funder action that we can take this conversation. Because we're getting another game of some exposure to a rookie quarterback so we got to see the some zach wilson and we know that he's pretty much guaranteed to be the starter for the for the jets and he looked decent in spots. And i think that there's some optimism there for the jets based on how he played against the giants and the rest of the preseason especially the way he played against the packers. But there's some buzz right now at patriots camp on how good mack jones looks it. Sounds like at some point or another mack. Jones could be the starting quarterback whether it's week one or if it's midway through the season when things are potentially not going well for the patriots macro jones their first round selection is in a spot to eventually take over the starting quarterback role. There's also from what we've heard it practice. He was gashing the giants secondary during team. Trill so we get to see mack jones versus the giants defense. And i think the question is here is one out of the giants had do the giants defensively look going up against him and then the the better question is how does mack jones fair. And what are we expecting from them. So logan ryan came out. I think after practice today or maybe it was yesterday and he said and today's thursday by the way he said that blake martinez himself. Had the worst practice. Dave had as new york giants on wednesday and that was the day everybody was raving about mack jones and they followed up that practice on thursday. I play a lot better. Logan ryan had an interception on mack. Jones xavier mckinney was all over the defensive backfield reportedly darnay homes actually ended up getting benched for julian lob after defense of holding finally something that he Definitely struggled with. I would say in his rookie season. So maybe that's something we should pay attention to just because we know this coaching staff really likes julian love and it seemed like a secondary was much better against mack. Jones in thursday's practice. I'm not. I'm not worried about this defense. But too much to be honest as long as they're healthy and they don't have a door jackson out there right now. I mean they had him out there. Most of wednesday's practice. But i think it was just a really really bad practice. Bad jones is going to be a solid player. Who probably will end up starting early. Probably maybe even week one. I mean he could start that early to be honest. I wouldn't be overly shocked if that ends up happening. I think just in general from mack jones. What i'm expecting to see from him is just smart efficient quarterbacking. Yeah i don't think he is going to set the world on fire. He's not going to be making any superman plays. He's not that kind of a quarterback but just as far as distributing the ball being accurate yet finding the open man getting the ball to him and putting his players in position to get yards after the. Catch that's what. I'm pretty much expecting for mac jones. Just zoom out a little bit. Just something i find a little bit ironic is that you know going back a ways. It josh mcdaniels drafted tim. Tebow and the word at the time was that he drafted tivo because he really really wanted to bring the reduction to the nfl and he thought tibo is going to be the guy to do that. And that didn't work out so well. So then wait about a decade. Or so and josh mcdaniels gets cam newton. Basically the best running quarterback the nfl has ever seen. And you think okay. It's his time and new. England has basically their worst year in about twenty years. Now they get mack jones who. I'm not saying he's tom brady a we. We heard those comparisons back during senior bowl. We are yeah. It was senior bowl week but they always kind of err on the side of hyperbole that that week but he is he does have some traits in common with radius being accurate efficient. He doesn't take risks with the ball. So it would just be kind of funny to me just looking at things. Taking that long view if mack jones does wind up being the starter and they wind up with basically going with what they had success with. And just not being able to do the thing. That josh mcdaniels has been wanting to do since got his head. Head coaching champs. It's definitely an interesting outlook on the whole situation. Because there's really two completely different. Quarterbacks play styles between cam and mack jones and we'll probably get to see both of them in this game. I just have to throw in the last little tidbit here on mack jones. I mean i really liked that you you brought up all that stuff there nick about the differences between the days of practice in which when he was lighting. Everybody up in the giants can claim that if it's an excuse or not but if they're collectively having a bad day of communication and then the next day they followed up with a fantastic performance. Probably expect more of the second day rather than the first day. They're going to be ready to go. They're going to be probably fired up so that they don't make themselves look silly silly and also exposed by a rookie quarterback if this game is going to be heavily played by the starters and i think that also begs the question of of what starters are even put out there. Does patrick graham. And joe judge to they say we don't want opposing teams to see how we're going to defend against these guys. We just wanna continue. What we've been doing. Maybe put a couple of the starters out there but mostly rotating these backups. I know it sounds like just based on how things seem with the starters with the offense of starters that they'll probably be somewhere along the similar lines but they're going to be in a situation here where they're going to want to look good against against the patriots offense in you know if they're communicating well and they're playing up to the same level of the way that they did in practice on thursday. It seems like it's a pretty reasonable task for them to To handle. But i think that that next big question is how. How does the front seven look. And who's out there against this. This patriots offense. I really wanna see what the giants front seven does against new england's offensive line because you know new england's line is well coached there well prepared and it's you know it's well built. We have heard from from practices that their offensive line has been tough. They've moved the ball. Well they've opened up holes. they've passed protected. Well so i. I want to see how pardon me. I want to see how the giants defensive front does against a really good test before it really counts we joan. I talked about how the giants defensive front got moved way too easily. By the browns the tackling was a problem. I want to see if the giants have that buttoned up yet. A our guys getting in good position. Are they wrapping up. Driving delivering good form tackles or are they lunging in going for those armed tackles. We saw way way too much of last week yet. Those honestly are the two things. I wanna see most a lot to be keyed on for this second. Preseason game and i think a lot of it is contingent on how much the starters play and it sounds like just from what we're vaguely hearing and we can't really say with much certainty as we found out what the last game against the cleveland browns..

"Camp. Dude return to practice today. But it will Patriots did he return to a starting job? That's the question we gave nights went from pretty Coleman. I mean, but Simmons on ESPN Radio ESPN have serious examine Channel Etienne. And gave that is the ultimate question because you look at New York Giants reporters when the Patriots were going ones V ones. And Patrick Graham is a heck of a defensive coordinator for the new for the New York Giants. As a matter of fact, he should be getting looks in the next couple of years. As a head coach. He runs very complex defenses and By all accounts, Mac Jones. Let him up. I mean to lift them up two days ago. Today. Cam Newton returned to practice and they split time. We're the ones and getting their reps. But Mac Jones took a massive opportunity and ran with it. Your reaction Yeah, That's what you want to see. And that for you spent a first round pick on a quarterback when he gets that opportunity, and you didn't know when it was going to come. You don't know how it was going to come for him to take that opportunity and run with it. That's what you want to see. That being said. I still think Cam Newton is going to be starting September 12th. I just feel that he's going to start the season as the number one quarterback for Bill Belichick. I'm excited. Honestly, for Cam in Year two with the New England Patriots, I thought he was gonna be a little bit better a year ago. I still think that there is I mean, the M V P might not still be in there, but I think there's some really good football stealing Cam Newton. I think he's going to show that a little bit

"He shows consistency and i would say some level of just minor improvement on a week to week basis. He's probably got a pretty good chance of making this roster because he's the guy who bust his ass he's probably not going to be good enough to start or even receive enough snaps to have much of an impact in this giants defense. But as long as you can show that if a situation where blake martinez goes down. And they need him to step in or somebody else goes down and they need him to step in and he can be really really good on special teams. He's gonna make this roster this performance a thing is a positive sign in the right direction for a guy like carter coughlan. Yeah yeah after the game. In his post-game thoughts. Ed suggested that carpet fat coughlin could be pushing. Take crowder for the starting job next to blake blake martinez and i honestly could see that. Especially if he keeps improving at the rate we have seen if he is able to build off of this first. Preseason game and continue to take steps going forward. I actually could see him winning a starting job now he might not be an every down player but if he keeps playing smart processing information while he moves well in space and he does have that pass rush of billy from his time as an edge. You know in college. That could be an intriguing piece. For patrick graham especially the way he likes to call defense since call these blitzes and scheming pressures you're ultimately what's going to make you more of an asset to a team and increase. Your chances of being able to make is being able to do multiple things. That background has an edge. Rusher is going to help him. They're not going to ask them to rush the passer in really any instance during the regular season but the fact that he can do it. If in a pinch you're down a guy on a short week and you don't have time to bring somebody up just having someone who can play. Multiple spots is really good. And he's played in this defense outside linebacker now. He's playing inside linebacker so he has familiarity at multiple positions. That is going to be really really key for a guy like carter coffin. I did he is going to be an increased chance. After what we saw from this one performance. We can really take away some positives for coughing and i would be super shocked. If he's not on this team. Come the start of the season. The one other thing to it just want hit on chris. We talked about in the post game stream areas williams continues to exceed my expectations. I think that that's super positive what we saw from him. He has the fumble recovery. He leads the team in tackles. He's not really plus athlete. He's not really a guy that is going to be super dynamic. He's probably not going to be a starter but he's really showing like hey. I was drafted for a reason. You gotta keep me around. I'm going to be a a key. Backup player in a really hard working special. Teamer that make sense to me now. Why they brought them on. I did get a little flack for for questioning that draft pick selection because it just didn't make any sense to me and as i always say i walk is to prove me wrong. I really like it when guys proved me wrong. Leonard williams has done it so far and here we are. Again with another williams dairies williams. Yeah this first game. I think it's a good starting point for him. He's got things he's got to tighten up I saw a few of his tackles. Were you know he was being targeted in coverage any touch to guy down but he was at least in good position. And that's a good starting point for him. That's how he wound up with that. He was in good position. That's how he wound up with that fumble recovery know. He didn't cause the fumble but he was right there when the ball came loose and he was able to return. I believe nineteen yards. So if he's able to maybe tighten up his coverage a little bit. Keep being in good position and keep busting his butt on special teams. I think that's a pretty solid path to the final roster for certainly going to help him maybe establish away onto this roster and to stick around. It's not a guarantee if you're a late round draft pick to make the team so having a hell of a first performance when the amount of snaps you're going to get through. The preseason are just gradually going to diminish. he's going to prove himself as a very talented guy or not talented but hard working guy rather that that deserves to remain with this giants team in twenty twenty one folks. That's gonna be it for us on today's episode. We're going to be coming your way with a preview of the giants next game against the cleveland. Browns second preseason game hopefully see a little bit more from the starters conceal a little bit more from this roster will probably have time.

"Defensively the giants played pretty well considering the output from the jets offense. They had a number of different quarterbacks. They didn't really have a lot of big name players that were really in the rotation understandably because of frankly how weak this roster is and. how young is denzil. Mims had a pretty good game against the defense that one play where he carried like ten guys. So that's a positive sign for the jets but defensively started to see some early flashes from the young guys and you pointed out immediately as social already here in our notes that he looked very very good when flashing some of the things that he's capable of as a defender and i think that that's going to be an indication of potentially he's used during the twenty twenty one season. Yeah i'll say i. I like the fact that the giants used him on both sides of the defense left left engine right edge. I liked rice off from him with his first step. He generally played pretty good leverage and when he was able to get the get his hands on the blocker i he was generally successful like the one that tackle for a loss he had against mci. Becton that's really what he did. Well he got there quickly he engaged and was able to shed the block really before beckton was ready to lock in the block and he also had another good play like that on the rights. I think it was matched up on morgan moses. A i would have to go back and check again again. But then i have to admit there were other plays where you didn't have quite as good leverage on. Maybe he didn't get his hands on the blocker. I when that happened. He did struggle There was one running play where he was he had to set the edge against becton and beckton was basically able to discard him. Push him way out of the play with one hand. That was a bit ugly. There was another one where he kind of got bodied by a pair of tight ends. I one engaged him stood him up. Second one came over with a double team and knocked him to the ground. Knocked him out of the play so i i'd like to see him be a little bit more consistent with his leverage with his technique. But that's something we knew about coming in. Yeah he isn't a terribly experienced at only two years at georgia and the other thing i saw which i liked was a lot of man coverage from the giants secondary yet a coverage in and of itself wasn't particularly great For the most part zach wilson was able to move the ball pretty much at will early on the game. But just you know we wanted to see the general shape of the offensive and defensive schemes. And i liked that. The giants were not afraid to man. Their corners up end really used to try to take receivers out of the game yet the fact that they didn't have bradberry in a adobe jackson on the field that changed the outcome. But i think that does promise. Good things when those guys do get on the field in terms of things that we didn't really like i. I like that you bring up here. The inconsistencies that we saw with tackling. And i mentioned that one play against teams. That was when the backups. Were in the game but there. There were some instances where some chunk yardage was able to be picked up because of some missed tackle so some inconsistencies there we. We didn't really get to see many defensive. Starters was really just young guys at backups. That were playing in this game. But you would like to see a little bit more effort in tackling and they were weak on third down. When zack wilson was in the game they did a really good job of stopping the run on the first two downs. And then zach. Wilson was able to complete are relatively easy pass to pick up a first down on what was like third in medium and third and long on some of those drives. You'd like to see a little bit more consistency and consistency in my eyes. On those third down plays the giants are probably going to do a lot better than what we saw in this game on third down. Because they're going to have their full arsenal of starters but just from the mix of early in the game of the starters in the backups. That was one of the weaker points remains. Just the the tackling to me is just that. That's something they have to tighten up and it was something that happened throughout the game from the from the first drive of the game all the way through the almost seven minute long. Four minute drill at the end of the game where the giants would have guys in position to make tackles and they just kind of gopher armed tackles or just kind of slide off of the ball carrier you brought up the dental mims play where he is a big athletic powerful receiver but he's still receiver. And you don't wanna see a wide receiver trucking your entire defense. That's just that is not going to go over. Well you know when the coaches in team are watching tapes the net the next day. There's gonna be a lotta guys just kinda maybe hiding their faces a little bit on that play. So that's something i'd really like. The giants coaches get tightened up and really taking care of hopefully before the browns game but certainly before the regular season and then just early on i would have liked to seed the defensive front a little bit more stout against the giant. I'm sorry against the jet. Starting off offensive line now yes. We didn't see letter williams. We didn't see dexter lawrence. We didn't see blake martinez but bj hill. Danny sheldon austin johnson. Reggie ragland a crowder. These guys are definitely going to be seen a lot of snaps for the giants this year and i would have liked to have seen them locked down the run and get more penetration early on in the game against the jet starters. Yeah they could have been a little bit better early on against the starters. And i think once we saw a little bit more rotation from both teams and towards the backups. That was when we started to see some more lockdown efforts. They looked pretty good against the run as we talked about on the stream there was some really really good penetration and that highlights the one key thing from the backups that we saw. I think that we've established that. They have not like elite depth but quality depth at linebacker. 'em defensive line and what i'm referencing are the guys like bj. Hill danny sheldon and austin. Johnson were in their early. But some of these other backups. That were in the game later on. I thought they did a pretty good job and the other thing is well that we talked about in commended. One specific guy for carter coughlan who was playing inside linebacker. He is really exceeded expectations. Joe judge spoke very highly of him. He's just a guy that's excited to be out there..

"Some pretty good things from real hernandez and it's probably not hard to stand out. I'm not trying to knock well hernandez. But i'm saying here a knocking kenny. Kenny wiggins instead it's easier to stand out when the guy who's playing at the opposite guard spot as a horrendous performance. When asked to start. I don't mean to bash kenny williams too much but i think we've figured out pretty quickly. The death at the guard position is very questionable. I was not a fan of what i saw from getting wiggins. We don't need to go into that because we're talking more positives but you also decided to write down the cj board run that they used it was in and around stuff that we saw often last year another takeaway. I had from that specific. Touch is early on you a lot of effort to get the ball to cj board. There were a good amount of touches on that end around was direct emphasis on trying to get him the football. They also had him returning kicks as well various parts of the game. I think that's a pretty clear indication of how they feel about him in the depth chart right now. Maybe he's not like the clear cut number five receiver or number six receiver on the depth chart but the fact that they're trying to scheme him some touches in this first preseason game to see what he can do and the fact that they're using them on special teams might be an indication that they're going to try to do whatever they can to keep him around as more so a special teams ace. Yeah i really think that is the case. It really could come down to. Cj board versus. David sills which will get to him in a minute or that last wide receiver position or maybe the two of them in john. Ross because we didn't see ross. I we don't really know what the giants think of him. His speed is impressive. He could make a splash in these last. Two preseason games but right now it seems like the giants really like both of those two backup receivers and the reason why took noted that end around is because of how could area's tony who we haven't seen yet another guy who sat this game After the game we found out he he's having some nagging injury. Problems i think is what joe judge said in there being cautious with him but once he finally gets on the field. I think we really could see him less as a slot. Receiver infringing on what sterling shepherd does and more as that kind of gadget player offensive weapon. Which is what he did his first three years and even into his fourth year at florida where you just scheme ways to get him. The ball used his speed in jillian explosiveness on those end. Arounds jet sweeps use them on screens. And maybe use play designed to take defenses. By surprise i really liked how the giants used play action on that end around. It really drew pretty much entire jets defense away from the play. There wasn't anybody around to tackle ford when he got the corner and the blocking for that play was really easy. 'cause nobody was looking at board. Yeah no that created a really good opportunity and we're probably not going to see a lot of end arounds from cj board during the regular season. But i wouldn't say that something we're going to see with the guy like area's tony. Maybe john rossa finds his way into the lineup. If pedestals around like those faster quicker guys are gonna get those opportunities for those end arounds to pick up some some serious yardage now shifting our focus from things that we didn't really like from the starters you made note of how there were some inconsistencies from some of the starting offensive. Lineman particularly. Nicotine indicates a map. We get that one pancake from parrot which was pretty nice to see early on the game. He did allow a sack so it wasn't really like super clean game From the offense of it wasn't like they had a horrendous outing. Starters are out there but they do need to clean some stuff up yet with gates and in particular. I saw a lot of hips rising shoulders. Rising hands getting wide giving up their chest did have that pancake but he also had that sack end. He gave up the sack to bryce half who he was playing into the fourth. Quarter for the jets. You know we noted last year how gates was he struggled to start the season but then he got. He got better as the season went on. It was kind of tough to follow him a game speed. One thing. i didn't like overall. Is that the. Nfl game is not giving us all twenty. Two tape for the preseason. So that makes this a little bit harder than it has to be strictly speaking zooming in on the offense of interior watching and rewatching plays start to see some things with nikkei's where again he led us stamps narrow With let his hands drift wide and he had some good place but he also had plays where he kind of get pushed into the backfield. More than i think we really want to see with him. And it was push the that kind of kept booker to a few of those two yard runs and also let cj moseley getting positioned to tip that that. I think it was mike glennon. I pass the game and those are things. That gate is going to have to clean up. Your gates is somebody who we saw a bit up down play from last year started to have a really strong finish to the season. And you would hope that some of that momentum would carry a new twenty twenty one police some of those inefficiencies are cleaned up now the the defensive line that the jets have is underrated. I i think that it's not really some walkover defensive line there's gonna be a really good front in the afc east. They're going to probably playboy pretty well against the run so to struggle against them. Not exactly at horrible thing but still you would like to see some improvements from the gates now. I just want to hit on really quick before we shift our focus to the defense talking about some of the backups. Which is what we saw. The most out of the big thing for me is that we just saw a super lack of push from the offensive line like you saw them very easily being manhandled by the jets defensive line who is a very young team. They're backups are really nothing to really be excited about. So the fact that they were getting manhandled pushed around. There is a ton of penetration. There was a lot of inconsistency you saw gaps and holes being created and guys filling those lanes on the jets defense pretty easily in a lot of instances not really much of an effort to get to the second level. That was a really really big struggle for me. Cress from the from the backups and it really looked like the whole thing kind of fell apart. When murphy went down in those first few plays for the giants backup offensive lineman. They didn't look too bad. But once murky went down it just kind of fell apart and like you said they got very little push upfront. There was not great said not created all pass protection. I believe the jets wound up with five or six sacks including that one that might have ended clayton thorson's season which also basically sealed the game. You know except for the kneel downs so that is concerning the depth on this offense line was something we had. We had questions about. And i don't think they really answered any of those questions or at least not answer them in the way we would have hoped right. Yeah a lot of the questions that we have about this backup offensive line. We're not really getting a ton of clarity on it. And i think that one thing we're just starting to figure out is that they need to go out and bring in some more veterans and they need to hope that some people get cut because teams are really tight on roster spaces and they can potentially benefit from it because a lot of those guys that were in there were just not getting the job done and in the event that there are injuries which we've already seen injuries in games from offensive lineman. It's going to happen. They're going to need guys to step up and fill in. And hopefully they have some type of depth to fill in in those situations. Chris i also want to just bring up from the backups. there were some pretty good splash. Plays from the receivers from these backup receivers. We didn't see any kindergarten. Obviously we didn't see any could area's tony or any sterling shepherd. it was. mostly the backups. From the jump and then we saw really deep down in the depth chart towards the end of this football game. There were some really good place from these guys. We mentioned david sills we mentioned..

"Passed but honestly. That's i don't really care about that all that much or no. I want him out there week. One hundred percent close to one hundred percent getting saquon. Barkley daniel joan. Daniel jones will just getting saquon. Barkley back we'll give daniel jones such a comfort zone. I guess you could say safety. Blanket in the passing game defenses will play him a little bit differently and it will just help this overall offense adjacent garrett used in twenty twenty. I think that offensive identity was built around saquon barkley garrett lost him in week two and then he had to just figure out other ways to try to mount an offense and the end result of that is the thirty first ranked offense in the league when the giants up significantly from maj. Jason guarantees a look himself in the mirror with that. getting saquon. barkley back is nice step towards being a better more efficient offense but i think actually the first step is getting him to week one without any re- injuries or setbacks. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't actually see him in any of the preseason games and i also wouldn't be surprised if the giants do kind of hold him back especially this first week back limit his reps to maybe even non contact drills hold him back from practicing in full shell full pads maybe have just one on ones receiving drills things like that and really let him get his legs back underneath him before they start introducing contact end practicing at full speed into the equation because we reno wants a competitive guy and we don't need him going out there trying to go one hundred miles an hour the very first time he gets the ball in his hands and then even just slipping yet. I think everybody will have their stomach up in their throat. If he just goes down without contact or goes down awkwardly this first week back so it right now just getting fully healthy like you said hundred percent for week one and avoiding anything that even looks like re injury. Yeah and one thing. I see from this. I feel as though them working him in now is working along the lines of that conservative gradual working him back into getting wraps. Because if you're doing it now with a few weeks to go this allows you to very gradually go about it with multiple weeks to work your way up to a normal practice load. Which is why we're saying. It's probably decently likely that he gets at least some snaps in week. One chris. you're talking about how it's probably better that we don't even really even see him. Maybe in the preseason or they might not even work them in the preseason but at the same time i almost wouldn't be surprised if come final week of the preseason the last game that they don't just get him out there for the first series let him get hit a little bit so that he can feel confident going into week one because that is always an added aspect saquon is a freakishly built human being as we know by how his biggest freaking legs are and how explosive he is and he's also had a tendency to heal pretty quickly like we saw what the with the ankle injury that he was dealing with a few years back. But you know maybe in this instance he just needs to get himself mentally prepared to get hit to take some contact to get hit by guys. That aren't his teammates. That aren't going to be thinking. Oh i need to go a little easy on. Saquon me because i don't want anything to happen to him. It might not hurt him to actually put them out there for series in that final preseason game and that is the line to walk. You know you want to keep him healthy. You want to keep him progressing in his rehab. But you know on the other hand a lot of times. The last step in the biggest step is getting that confidence back that you are not going to break. I think all three of us have been hurt before we've been injured and getting your mind wrapped around the idea that you can push yourself in. The pain isn't going to come back. Your whatever got hurt isn't going to just fail. That is a pretty significant step. And it's usually the last step for getting all the way back getting all the way back. That's what we want to. I dislike wanna pitcher. Saquon barkley rushing in this jason garrett running skiing because as much as we kinda give garrett a lot of crap for for the offense for the passing game and i think a lot of it is warranted. The running scheme was pretty solid. Last year with wing gaughman. They switched to a much more power. Gap centric type running scheme as opposed to the pat shurmur inside zone even though he still runs a lot of inside zone type of concepts that power gap specifically to counter game the gif counter g. h. counter. If you wanna call it that not counter that would save on barclay hitting that whole that defined whole behind to blockers. Once he gets the second level. I mean it. Put a safety in the alley against saquon barkley and that's can be a really tough job for that. He's gonna be a really really sound tak. We're really really good tackler because barclay. I mean he somebody going back twenty eighteen. Who had over three point three yards after contact which was a top ten in the nfl that season. We all know his tackle-breaking ability. His unique jukes and his unique explosiveness is unique ability to make people miss in space. When you have that defined hold you kind of eliminate the whole Vision part will vision still apartment but the whole mind like your mind goes when you're in the backfield and you're running back. You have the football and then you have to make that split decision in power gap. It's not as prominent of a trait. You know what i'm saying like inside zone you have to really fine. The whole read a bunch of different things. But you know what whole you're going to empower gap and i think that's going to benefit saquon. Barkley a player who ran a lot of power gap at penn state yet in berkeley does have kind of a tendency when you give him almost an all cart running style where you give him to three choices for running lanes. He tends to almost take the run on instant by instant basis. Where particularly if you slow the play down in like in all twenty two tape..

"So chris this is something that we were going back and forth on before we started recording. The show is who sticks around on the roster and before we get into that conversation. I think we need to just hit on these backup players. The last three that have been listed at edge rushing roles or coughlin who was a rookie. Last year played. Mostly special teams did get some opportunities to get on. The field. didn't look all that great nassim to do some stuff that i don't think he was very comfortable doing and there was a reason why we saw him struggle. But then there's also trent harris and then there's also garrett kale so these three guys separate from some of the other names that we mentioned are probably the love most likely to get cut maybe or coughlin lands himself onto the practice squad but they have the biggest uphill battle to make this roster. Yeah i would agree with that. I think the giants like car coughlin. He is a guy who he's got a really strong work ethic he's got a great motor. He's a better athlete than i think he gets credit for but like you said when he got on the field he struggled. Yeah i think he could be in a battle with cam brown for that back end of the roster primarily special teams role with a chance to work as we on the field and defense. But he's going to have to pick it up because brown in that area does have a head start on him. Trent hair scare kale. I think the guys to watch in training camp but like you said they've got an uphill battle we also do have to pay attention to the numbers game. You know. we've got three guys. We think are going to have a sizeable share of the snap. Count and then. We've got four guys. We have a strong presence as a rotation. do the giants keep seven edge players. Or is it just six. Could ellison smith not cam brown off the bat off the back end of the roster and they basically just keep five down defensive lineman and six ed rushers unfortunately when we when you get as many bodies at a position as the giants have right now. The numbers game starts to be a very real consideration and giants could wind up being forced to make difficult decision with a guy they would really rather keep on their roster that i think is going be the largest debate that will be having in regards to this defense. And who makes the roster. Because you can't really say like oh it. You know the it makes sense. They've got a deep group. They're gonna keep seven guys. Look at the secondary. The secondary is the most crowded group on the roster and they're going to need spaces extra spaces. I think more than most teams to keep a lot of these guys on the roster and there's going to be somebody that is going to be cut. I think from the edge rushers or the defensive line. That is a recognizable name that we would have hoped would have at least gotten maybe a season or two more before. They parted ways with the giants and the two guys that i look at the most. That might be in that conversation because realistically it's probably going to be six it might. There's even a possibility might be five. I don't think that's going to happen. But there are going to be some serious constraints on how many edge rushers they can keep in the to that. I think come into play the most four competing for a roster spot right now even though they weren't doing so really last year is kim brown and is o'shane shane's inez. Like right now. The two of them i think of the most approve because they brought in some veteran free agents. They're going to give some of those guys. I think a little bit more the benefit the doubt because they've actually gotten more reps in live games. They've been competitive for other teams and they were basically hand selected to step into roles that were unproductive last year. If you have to go out and get guys in free agency for your positions. That usually means that the coaching staff is looking for competition. And they weren't necessarily impressed with what you showed so far. So oceans jimenez cam brown. I think right now are probably the biggest guys that might be surprised in the end of training camp yet and i really do feel there will be at least one surprise. Cut out of this group. We could even flag lorenzo carter as a potential surprise cut in the giants loved to turn the back into their roster. I'm not saying. Carter is going to be back under the roster type guy but they could find somebody to play that will linebacker position and if carter's injury lingers if they're just not happy with his development you know they really feel he should be an edge rusher and he is just not there yet They could decide. Hey we we just don't have any more time to spend trying to develop you. We wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors and we could see them maybe try to pounce on edge rusher that maybe a team like the browns or the forty niners teams with incredibly deep defenses. Cut i think that the edge group the linebacker group is probably going to be in the in the tightest constraints which you can consider some of these guys to be off ball linebacker slash slash edge rushers but considering the players they have along the defensive line and then most specifically the secondary is going to really force out some players because as we know this defense has been built around the secondary it is built around having quarterback stand there for extended periods of time until the defensive line in the edge. Rushers eventually get there. That is what has been the bread and butter. Maybe the approach alters slightly but it seems like the money and the effort that was spent in free agency there is going to be a huge emphasis still on the secondary. And we'll we'll talk about the safeties and the corners on separate shows and we'll probably talk about other surprise. Names that are recognizable players that are going to get cut from those groups but separate from that chris. I think with our backups. Here carter coffin. Trent harris gear kale are in a bit of a tight squeeze. We don't really know. A whole lot from trenton harrison garrett kale i think the more that's surprising but the more recognizable name is not going to make this for pretty much guarantee is carter coughlin. I just don't see a way that he squeaks into the roster unless they're obsessed with how he plays as a special teamer but it's just gonna be too tough for him considering all the guys ahead of him considering his limitations as an athlete and then we saw him struggle in various things last season when they asked him to get on the field and play more. Yeah he's going to have to make a pretty big jump in his play like just an incremental improvement. That'll be nice. But i don't think that's going to make enough to get him on the final fifty three man roster and yet. There's just one other thing i want to note. And that is the loss of rep. Yelma your i know. We're this is really a position group preview. But i think the giants losing their outside linebackers coach. He went back to coach at the college ranks. That's something i think. We were all expected expecting to see at some point but we did. Even though the giants pass rushers weren't a really impact group last year. we did see lorenzo. Carter take a step forward before he got hurt. We saw cuyler. Fakher will make some plays on. The giants didn't get a whole lot of out of marcus golden but when he was on the field last year he had an impact. And i'm just curious to see what another coaching change at that unit. Losing a guy who's very well regarded as a linebackers as a defensive coach. What effect that has no whether or not some of these young guys who were there last year maybe take a step backward without p. l. madera to coach them up some more. That's always going to be a big conversation point as well as there's been some rotations along this coaching staff. Who knows what we see. We see improvements. Do we see some set-backs that's going to be another thing as well where those relationships with some of the younger guys you have new face in there he's not really gonna go to bat for potentially guys that weren't around last season so we'll be tracking that as always we're going to be discussing and breaking down you.

"Unless he looks insanely unprepared during training camp and they don't feel comfortable putting him out there on the field but considering he was a second round pick a guy who many considered to be a first round talent. As long as these fully healthy -ocial ari is going to be on the field in playing. Because they're going to want him out there one to develop but also because he's an explosive guy that is going to create some some good opportunities for this defense. I do agree with you though chris. It's who gets on the field more between anderson and odor ningbo because both of them journeymen have have similar. Relatively similar styles skill sets but both having the opportunity to really prove them prove themselves in needing to prove themselves as that go to secondary pass. Rusher yeah and they're both basically the same size. Anderson is six to two fifty. Five ningbo is six three to fifty eight. They're almost the same age just a few months apart. They came at both came out of the twenty seventeen draft. It's going to be interesting. I think to see who really who winds up getting the the larger share of the defensive. Snap count because i think you you phrased perfectly that which edge defenders are on. The field is really going to come down to game situation. The style of defense the giants playing on that particular down. I think we will see a pretty healthy rotation out there. og lori will probably be the fixture the guy who is on the field the most but we're going to see a bunch of different guys out there both to get different skill sets on the field and to keep everybody well rested throughout the game and yeah. The crew. Trajectories of anderson in ningbo are pretty interesting. Anderson was a highly regarded player. Coming out of alabama whose drafted in the second round parmi draft in the second round of the twenty seventeen draft. Boy he never really played up to what was expected of him based on his career alabama. Yeah he has. I believe six career sacks most of which came in twenty nineteen and most of that came in one game against the philadelphia eagles owed ningbo. He was a seventh round pick and he has ten and a half career sacks but most of those again came in twenty nineteen where he had a really big season as a backup. He started every game. He was active for in twenty twenty and he wasn't able to replicate the success he had as a rotational player. So we'll be able to take that next step. Under patrick ramming the giants coaching staff. Or is he is he just best as a rotational guy. And i think that will be interesting to see. You're definitely going to be interesting to see how things work out with those two players. And i think that the other conversation we now have is who ends up being the other rotational names and faces get onto the field and as we discussed or we've already brought up. Patrick ram really does like to get as many different heads in there as possible based on certain circumstances and situations in the group right now that you see that fits into that conversation. He's zim as opening. Bow or anderson depending on who wins that job or whoever proves themselves the most but separate from to them cam brown. In ellison smith i feel depending on how comfortable they are with ellison smith because of his current development though probably try to find a way to work him onto the field maybe a little bit later on in some of these other players but he definitely has the physical traits to go out there and be competitive and just take up some space and maybe create some pressures. The bear conversation then becomes though does zimmerman as do brown get opportunities to get onto the field often because one oceans jimenez some consider him to be a cut candidate because of his lack of ability to be fully healthy and on the field. He was injured last year. Kenny stay healthy. Can you prove himself during camp can even potentially push himself into these starter conversation. Which seems like something. We've talked about for the last two years since his rookie season we've been waiting for him to ascend and take that next step. Forward camp brown is probably. I think less likely to really carve out a lot of time in this rotation. He is going to make this roster more for his effort that he provides on special teams. We saw a lot of that from cam brown last year. He busts his ads on special teams. Which is allowed him to stick around but we do know. The coaching staff has spoken very highly. On how much. He has gradually improved in the way that he finished last season and the giants are eventual very special teams centric team. That's kind of what happens when you have special teams coaches your head coach. And then you've got to career. Special teams were nader's running your special teams like they pay particular attention to that side of the game and having really good special teams. Chops is a great way to distinguish yourself on the back end of a roster and make the squad which will give you a chance to get on the field on offense or defense. Yeah depending on what. You're what you're not gonna position is so i think that does bode well for cam brown. Yep oceans jimenez. When he is healthy he is a really polished pass. Rusher he is not a particularly explosive guy. He isn't big. He isn't super strong. He isn't hyper athletic. but coming. Out of old dominion he actually had really good pass rushing technique so while he might never be a an explosive. Big sacked number rusher. He's a guy you can. As long as he's healthy feel comfortable having out there like he's going to be disciplined in in run defense. He's going to provide some pressure as a pass rusher and for a rotational guy a backup..

"So it looks like he's he's potentially going to be one of the probably the closer competitors for that final spot if not maybe he ends up on the practice squad again in the giants have to pray that nobody snatches him up which it might be better for them to try and get him on the roster rather than let somebody else snatch up a guy that they've been developing since last year. Absolutely not want then also you would also hope that his former teammate would be able to spell his last name correctly in the google diamonds. I have misspelled his name for so long any christie. He probably doesn't know what spell my name. it's okay yeah. I totally agree. It's going to be a risk if he goes into training camp. He shows that he is capable of being somewhat of an nfl starter and the giants trying to sneak him onto the practice squad again. Because there are a lot of opportunistic general managers out there waiting for teams to do that with young players like this especially in positions that are hard to develop the offense of lines. The giants have a tough decision. There if murphy plays well in preseason and especially if he plays while preseason weather's tape that other teams can access. And i think that does bring up one other point to make in that. Is the giants backup offensive lineman. You're one of those spots. Might not be on the roster right. now there's going to be thirty. One other teams cutting a lot of offensive lineman out there and there are teams that have no team has great depth on the offensive line but they are teams out there that have better depth than the giants and there are guys who might find themselves on the street. Thanks to a numbers game and hopefully the giants themselves are keeping a close eye on that waiver. Wire because if they can get an upgrade over jonathan harrison or zach fulton managed to keep murphy and you know have nate's older he still sitting there off to the side. I haven't forgotten about him. The depth on the offensive line. I think is something that is really important having guys like murphy who can do a lot that lets you get away with. Maybe only having seven offensive lineman active on game day. And you know nobody wants to see an injury on the offensive line. Because like i said not too. Many teams have really great depth where they can lose two guys on an offensive line. Usually if that happens you're suck. It's kind of amazing. The chiefs got to the super bowl with the injuries. They had on their offensive line. But i think is just something to keep track of is the giants should be keeping an eye on that waiver wire to boost their depth. Any which way they can. Because you know how many of these starters do we actually want to not see on the field and the you know the last little piece here with murphy. I just wanna throw out there. If you guys are calling the middle of the season. They actually did promote him to the active roster. And i remember. I was talking with ed. And he was telling me that some other teams had been sniffing around the practice squad to maybe potentially bring him on. So that's a pretty clear indication that they'll do what they can to keep a guy like murph around because they know that he might have needed some more time to develop than these other players but he has that potential to be a really really strong backup for maybe a few years and then a spot starter if you really need them to be so guys if we were to pitch who we think might be the practice squad guys. Let's say let's go to three if we really want to be generous here. But a bit unlikely. Who do you guys see as practice squad. Players is it gonna be like kenny wiggins and then a brett hegi some of those guys i think hagi will be. I mean i've heard good things about hegi from just people who follow florida football now. He wasn't that great guard in two thousand nineteen but when he switched to centre twenty twenty really really mentally processed position from a high of standpoint. Which is something that you really need. I mean that's why. I'm mike so like just flabbergasted. Nick was able to transition from tackle to center. One season was truncated all season. Kinda do it really solid job that the giants 'cause that's not an easy thing to do for mental standpoint. But he was able to do it. And i've heard good things about hegi from that standpoint. So i'm thinking he would. I know burton with somebody who played tackle at ucla. Then he played guard at baylor so he has the ability to do both. But i think he might be a little bit too small from the arm standpoint not athletic enough to play tackle in the nfl. But it's something to consider. And then jackson barton's somebody who is absolutely gigantic. Who they brought him from the chiefs practice squad last year. So maybe he somebody at the giants really have high hopes for now. I haven't seen much film on. Jackson barton so i can't wait in from that standpoint but i just following what the giants are doing a stolen the roster he could potentially be somebody that they try to sneak on the practice squad. If you can't crack the the roster just in general because when you have that kind of length and if he can move and they may view him as somebody who can fill in if not were to go down if they just want. One of those tackles just be incredibly long arm. Similar dandruff thomas's well. I think those are both two pretty good picks. I noticed the name we haven't said is chad slade. But you know he's kind of been around a bit and he's his chances in like like nick said he kinda get on the field get us at it dominated and then we wouldn't see him again so i kind of wonder if maybe the clock has run out for him unless he has himself one. Hell that camp. That's it for our discussion here on the giants offensive line. We're going to get onto defense next. I believe we'll start talking about the defensive line will probably be that first group and training.

"Up on the giants practice squad but the one interesting player from this group that jumps out to me is david sills because there was a lot of hype around this guy ed in previous years in last year ended up hurting his foot in twenty twenty so he was out for the entire season put on the injured reserve. And all that kind of stuff. But he's a pretty damn good Garner guys and he could push cj board for a possible roster spot in training camp if he can prove that he can be more efficient better governor than him so. That's one name that i would say from this fringe group that has a chance to crack that final roster it would obviously be in the place of someone like a cj board. But that's that's an interesting little camp battle that i'm gonna be looking at when training camp rolled around. Yeah i'm with you. I think austin. Mac is probably the most likely to stick around just because you know he was on the giant squad for eleven games last year. He's a guy he knows the offense he knows the coaches the coaches know him and he was only targeted. Eleven times made seven catches but five of those catches were first downs. So that is a pretty darn good rate and if you can show your reliable in your important situations like that kind of thing coaches remember and if they've got that good feeling about you that could be a point in your favor yet. David sills. He's got that special teams ability. He also has size on his side. The giants have kenny golladay. But other than david sills. They don't really have big receiver on their roster but still does have kind of the same similar size as galata. I think he's a six four. Probably to fifteen may be two twentyish. So he's got that ability to just have that instant separation thanks to his size and catch radius and that could also if he's able stay healthy again that could show up in training camp and the preseason and maybe that does let him push. cj board off the end of the roster if he can offer similar special teams ability while also offering the ability to effectively backup that x wide receiver position spot ryan. There's always that potential that you end up with a guy maybe it sills. Maybe it's austin mac that bust their ass during the offseason enough that they make a huge progression and maybe one of these four players beats out. Cj board john rosser dante pettis for that final receiver spot. But right now there is a lot of competition justice stick around with this giants organization. Let alone just to be on the practice squad. There is going to be competition. So these guys i. I'm actually going to be paying attention to them. I know that they're not really a part of this. A huge impact of this giants roster. But that is a good competition group to see if they can fight to end up on the team. Coming up we are going to discuss how we think that this giants passing attack is going to look differently with all the new names coming up on the other side..

"Here is obviously headed by saquon barkley. Who's coming off of an acl injury that took him out of a majority of last season. Getting hurt against the chicago bears very very early. On second game of the season. here he is returning. We've seen a lot of guys lately. This is no longer a death sentence that it used to be twenty thirty years ago. Where you torn. Acl on your career was basically done instead. We see plenty of guys who come off. These injuries. have a very highly productive careers and also big bounceback years immediately following like a good example. Adrian peterson was one of those guys who did that. At the running back position so saquon at the top of the list we. We don't need a debate. Who are be one is just like. We didn't need need to debate who. Qb one is but saquon is in a position now where he's going to have a lot of pressure on his shoulders coming off that injury. Yeah i think he definitely well exactly share. Fresher is the right word for it. But i think there are definitely our expectations for saquon barkley going into this season. The giants are going to have to make decision on that fifth year contract They're really going to have to make a decision on a long term extension for him. And i think that is where the real pressure is going to come from if he gets off to a bit of a slow start. I don't think anybody will start. Start killing him for right. I mean he tore his acl and head to wait. Most of a month for the swollen. go down for to get repaired. Doctors are getting pretty good at stitching knees back together but it's still a significant injury. Yes definitely still a significant injury. But i i don't know how exactly to look at this because from everything we hear right. Now he's saying we're taking it a day at a time. I was literally watching. Gm fb a few days ago. And they had james bradberry on a peter schrager s a question and james bradbury about saquon barkley and james bradberry was like all. He's gonna come out and he's going to be a dog and then like right away. He realized that he said something he shouldn't have and he kind of walked it back and he was like let me and he literally said like. Excuse me. let me rephrase. We're taking a day a time but you know and like he like totally like joe judge the entire thing and realize he probably shouldn't be saying that and i think we all hope is gonna come back and i do ultimately think he's going to be there week one but it's definitely more of a slow process and i'm not sure what the snack counts are really going to end up. Being four saquon barkley and devante booker in week one other. We're going to see a little bit more booker than we may want to. But that's mainly just because i think they're going to ingratiate back into the lineup back into that former role and that since they have you know running back depth here made in see a third running back out there and honestly the you say that making originally my my thoughts here on saquon were he probably is going to get a light load going into the season for like maybe the first four or even longer than that games but that combine james bradberry almost makes me think that everybody within the building was told to say that so that they don't expect teams facing the giants early on don't expect saquon to get a lot of touches maybe he's further along than he actually is and we're not actually going to get the full glimpse into that until you know. Maybe the soon as the first game kicks off. I think if the denver broncos come into the come into week one any assuming anything other than getting a full dose of a one hundred percent saquon barkley. They are making a significant mistake. And i think they are at least their defense. Probably better coach than that. So the second player down on the depth chart. And we're gonna get to talking about saquon for the second half of the show. We're going to really dive into him. Because of the importance he has to this giants offense but after him seemingly is devante booker. Do you guys think that this is confirmed that we should just assume that he's going to be the second running back just based on how much they paid him in. Free agency the guys that are sitting behind him because it just a foregone conclusion at this point that devante booker is probably gonna take a good chunk of the carries as that second running back. I mean if if you're a betting man. That's where i would go but i definitely wouldn't say it's a foregone conclusion but two years five and a half million dollars on the first day of free agency that says something they definitely wanted to make it a priority to get a running back. Who can run between the tackles can run outside is a solid zone runner. A candu gap fast you can catch passes can also pass block. Booger can do all those things. I would say adequately to solid. They wanted to ensure that they had 'cause last year they had dion lewis yet. Dion lewis capacity can catch passes. But he's not good. Really running in between the tackles so he struggled with that. I feel like giant really wanted to ensure that they got somebody that if something were to happen the saquon barkley. This guy can step in. Nba three down back for them. Although we saw last year with jason garrett he'd like to use two backs a lot of the times. We saw a lot of alfred morris along with wayne gaughman so we may see some of that in the season just as early on the season. Like we said what's guam barkley coming back from that injury. But i think if i bet man everything points to booker and i think he can execute that role pretty solidly into. I wanted to get your take on this chris. Do you think booker's going to be an upgrade over wing. On what you're asking the internet's number one wing. Goldman fan right here. I know i know i. I'm not going to say he's an upgrade. I think we'll probably talk about this. In the second half. I think booker might fit what they want to do. A little bit better than winged could because you know for the just for the price wing. Goeman basically went to a blue san francisco on justa bov veteran minimum. And he was he was. I don't want to call him a revelation for the offense but the offense performed significantly better when he was on the field. And you know he was in the red zone. He was good in short area soon and he could do pretty much everything. He wasn't really great running outside. He didn't really have that. "But what he can do is reach every part of the field and i think that combined with going out and getting kenny golladay getting john. Ross getting canarias tony. Who's got all that speed. I think a really does signal that this team wants to start looking down the field yet. They i think want to go back to a more but coughlin ask offense where they attack deep and try to run the ball. You know play smashmouth running game and then forced the defense to start cheating defensive backs up and then attack deep I don't think that is really the type of football. That cole mccoy comply so they went out and got a backup. Who can do that. I would love to see that as well. Because jason garrett it seemed like entire philosophy last year was we're gonna call replays to get ten yards. We need to see more shots down. The field and colt mccoy wasn't really capable of doing that. We know daniel jones ended up getting hurt and cincinnati and when he came back and he played he just was not the same guy. Caught mccoy ended up a film back in against cleveland. And you know they were able to move the ball. And i think a lot of it was because of freddie kitchens but cole mccoy he's he's more of a processor re somebody who's going to be able to put your offense into optimal positions against the defense that he sees but he's not somebody who's going to be able to push outside the numbers from the far hash or push them all more than mike thirty five yards down the field in a in a more accurate manner. Mike glennon overly accurate. But like you said then he can really bomb the ball That could benefit darius slayton. If he ever ends up getting into the game a benefit of an ingram by he makes them boneheaded mistakes man mike and he does he makes me like. How did you not see that safety right there. Like what are you know. So there's definitely a give and take with that. But i i would rather be a little bit more aggressive than a little bit more and i really think jason garrett would like to be as well his whole career as an offensive coordinator or a head coach. He has really based his offenses around that old air. Coryell attacking vertical philosophy and we saw that the first couple weeks last year but the giants just didn't really have the pieces in place and i think the lack of a real x receiver was one of the biggest missing pieces y they had to transition to a lot more of that pat shurmur of west coast style offense where they were just doing. Half field reads One maybe three steps rhop's keeping the ball maybe five to seven yards downfield and playing that same style of offense. I think they really would want to. And i think it's a big want jason garrett to concentrate on attacking vertically lake when he had terrell owens and then dez bryant Amari cooper and all those guys now he got that extra for again and i think the one takeaway here from the mike glennon signing is a complete swing in the opposite direction of what you can have with a backup quarterback you guys talked about. How colt mccoy less of an arm. He's a little bit more analytical. He's going to be able to to be a lot more smarter in his decision making and we saw that when he was able to step in but not necessarily the elite thrower of the football that is going to be able to stretch the field. And now here. We are with my glennon. Who necessarily isn't going to make these pinpoint tight throws and make really really smart decisions with the football like you said nick instead. We're just getting a big arm. Who hopefully he doesn't have to step in. Hopefully this is just a spot player. If something happens were daniel. Jones has to come out for the end of a series. But i think we're all hoping that daniel jones ends up starting every single game this year. It doesn't really miss any time. Because i would honestly prefer not to have to put mike glennon out there on the field at any point but the third guy we have is clayton thorson. Who is it pretty safe and easy to say that. I don't think clayton thorson is going to make this roster a guy that came out of northwestern a few years ago. I just don't really see anything about him. That really makes a lot of sense for keeping around a third quarterback especially because of all the defensive backs or the receivers on this roster. I really don't see a situation. Where clayton thorson is it. More than just a camp arm speaking of players. We really don't want to see on the field when it matters yarmuth with clayton thorson. I would expect that. He is a camp arm and if the giants are actually looking for competition at the backup quarterback spot. That guy isn't on their roster right now in. That could be position. We look at around the time team. Start cutting players where you know maybe some guy on the back end of fritzy stacked roster gets let go just in the numbers game and we could see the giants put in a waiver wire claim or maybe sign him and then go for your try to stash guy in the practice squad something like that. Yes that's exactly. What clayton doors. He's gonna be practice squad type guy and they'll probably look upgrade on him if somebody they like is is released from another football team. But i'm guessing. They like his character his work ethic and what he provides from that standpoint mental standpoint because on the field you know back when he was at northwestern it wasn't an eye popping type of situation when he went down to the senior bowl. It wasn't like that either. He ended up getting draft in the fifth round by the philadelphia eagles. But i don't envision him the field as the new york giants starting quarterback if something were to happen to mike glennon daniel jones. I think we'll bring somebody else in in not really a terrible option to have as a third quarterback put just sit with this. This roster doesn't really make a whole lot of sense for them to carry a third quarterback on this team so the expectation probably not going to be making it not really much of a surprise. They're just considering how much she's bounced around and and how. He is not really stuck anywhere throughout his career in the nfl. Over the past few seasons coming up. We're gonna talk about headlines that we're going to be watching specifically those surrounding starting quarterback daniel jones before we get to that though folks. We're just going to take a short commercial break support for this episode comes from forward. Most people go to the doctor for the one offs like rashes and colds. And your annual flu shot but doctors can do more. That's why you need forward..

"Com for more fantastic giants coverage. So today is going to be quarterbacks. And this is probably going to be the least eventful show in terms of talking cots and who's going to be starting where just for the simple reason that we already know who the starting quarterback is but but as we're going to do with every single one of these shows we're going to go down the depth chart and we're going to talk about these guys and then the second half of the shows and be very very heavy on daniel jones guys. We already off off the rip that daniel jones is the starting quarterback. There's not really much of a situation here where they brought in somebody to maybe compete with him his third year. They've thought that type of quarterback situation. But i think the expectation right now for daniel jones guys is him needing to step up in this third year because all of this money has been spent in pooled on the offensive side of the ball. They brought in a ton of weapons. They spent draft picks a first round draft pick on a wide receiver. The expectation right now seems like for daniel jones that he needs to get them over the hump. He needs to stop making the errors that he did in his first. Two years in the nfl. Because this team right now is primed and ready to be competitive would say that that might be. The biggest question regarding the giants is will daniel jones. Take that step forward. And they really need him too. They made him six overall pick. They have like you said invested a ton of resources draft capital free agent. Money south Salary cap dollars into surrounding him with talent. And they've got a ton of coaches around him. They've got jason garrett they elevated forty kitchens to a a new position that seems to be much higher in the coaching. Staff pecking order. They are really trying to set the stage for him to take the next step. Or maybe ideally take a leap into proving that he is their franchise quarterback chris. You're right in that next step. For freddie kitchens is just to kind of alleviate the the fact that he had a position group last year now. I think he's gonna be coming in as more of a schemer to help assist jason garrett with that because he was a tight ends coach last year. Now derek dooley who can handle those responsibilities and hopefully kitchens can kinda like we saw. When colt mccoy started. In that cleveland game. We saw some a little different types of wrinkles when jason did not coach that game because he had kobe salsa in different types of wrinkles. Hopefully we can see a little bit more that within jason garrett offense when it comes to freddie kitchens and hopefully that will help daniel jones us all these weapons and kind of get the most out of the x receiver that jason garrett loves the most out of the white tight end that jason hurt laws in kyle rudolph if kyle rudolph is healthy and then the x factor with all of this would end up being to me. Could area's tony. Because i'm not one hundred percent. Certain how they're going to utilize his skill set. Which is to me. I mean you could do so many different things with him. I seen on twitter. People throw all yeah. He's raw out there and get it. He he didn't. He doesn't have a lot of snaps as a wide receiver but he has nuance man as a route runner. And i know we've talked about that and this isn't a wide receiver. Show will save that. But i do believe that can help daniel jones locks daniel jones is going to need a male jones a turn the football over more than anybody in the national football league in the last two seasons combined so that needs to get cleaned up and let's face the fact right here. There's some pressure on daniel jones. Because you have to make a decision next year in next. May if you're gonna pick up his fifth year option and that really is going to be a huge decision for the giants. I mean we know the salary cap is going to be going up. They have to make a decision about saquon. Barkley i think we can. We can talk about that when we get to the running backs show but right now daniel jones has played to a level where i think it really is a decision they have to make. It's not a no brainer. That they pick up that fifth year option right now and we know and we have seen. Just what kind of an advantage. Having a starting quarterback on a rookie contract is for teams. And i think that really has compressed the development timeline for a lot of teams like no we saw arizona. Move on from. Josh rosen in a heartbeat. Like they didn't waste any time. Going from josh rosen. To cuyler murray because not only. Do you need a quarterback who you can have have starting for you on that rookie contract. You need a quarterback who can not only you can win with but be the reason why you wins. And i think that's an important distinction to make. And honestly i think right now for this this upcoming third season for daniel jones and we're going to spend some time in the second half talking about the impacts of all the editions that they made. You mentioned some of the coaching adjustments. That might help him out. And as much of this is a situation where daniel jones should take a step forward and improve in some direction in two thousand and twenty one based on everything that they put around him. The other the other angle here. Is that the pressure is even higher for daniel jones. Now that they've done all these things because if you can't succeed after making all those moves then at what point are you going to be successful in the nfl. That and we're gonna take some time. I think i'm saved towards the end before we can actually really expand upon that point because there's potential for him to maybe be on the hot seat depending on how things turn out in twenty twenty one but moving our way down the depth chart a little bit more. Mike glennon is the expected. Backup for this giants roster. I like last season where we were debating who the backup was. If if maybe cole mccoy had some competition for right now it just seems like it's going to be mike. Glennon somebody that they brought in as a free agent cole. Mccoy does not return. What are your guys. Thoughts on. Mike glennon christie mentioned before the show that they may be brought him in so they can stretch the field a little bit more. In the event that daniel jones can't play. Yeah i think the biggest difference between cole mccoy mike. Glennon is the fact that mike glennon has a massive arm that has his defining characteristic as a quarterback. He has the range of a jobs machine. And all of the mobility of jugs machine. He he is not going to be playing outside the pocket. He's not going to be breaking out on bootlegs or scrambling and scampering or doing all of the various west coast. Things that colt mccoy was able to do..

"So today as i said folks we're gonna talk about two guys on offense three guys on defense that we think are in a really good spot to potentially have a big year in twenty twenty one now. Not all five of these guys are going to explode and have all pro seasons but the projection here is some players that we think have that capability of stepping up having productive seasons. Especially maybe talking defensively where guys might not really have an elite year. But they're just going to step up because there's a lot of different players at rotate in and out of that lineup. But of course it's one of the offense. I and i think that when we talk breakout players it's not easy or we're almost inclined to point to skill position players but in this circumstance. I have to talk heavily offensive line because we've pretty much determined who these skill players are and what they're going to do the one name that i'm going to be so focused on his andrew thomas for this upcoming season because all we saw some flashes of what he was capable of towards the end of last year. He was starting to progress in improving. Get better as the year went on and finished really really strong enough to a point where i think it is pretty safe to say that enter. Thomas has the looks of being a really really good starting left tackle. Yeah you said it we. Whenever somebody talks about potential breakout candidates you'll always gravitate towards the skill position players. Because they're the guys who make the highlight reel plays they get on. Tv they get the the spots on espn nfl network. They're the guy scoring touchdowns or racking up twenty yard receptions or big runs but the giants best candidates might just be those too often of linemen and with andrew. Thomas part of it is just. He had a particular. The first part of his rookie season was rough. And there's no two ways about it. He struggled with speed rushers. Especially in that first. Half of the year He strove very hard with protecting that inside shoulder over setting to the outside He wasn't really run blocking as well as i think. Pretty much anyone expected and really the giants offensive line as a whole was really kind of a disappointment last year. But then like you said the second part of the season after that by week. It seemed like he started to figure some things out. He started to get more comfortable with his technique. The giants had a change at offensive line. Coach may be a different style of teaching helped and we did start to see some flashes. Some some of the reasons why. The giants took andrew thomas as the first offensive tackle in that really great oftens of line draft class last year so i think part of the flashes. We saw that really hit at the ceiling. He has but also where he is coming from. He he set the bar low for himself at the beginning of last year. I think both of those really is set him up to be a really good breakout candidate. Yeah and what i honestly point to. I think the most is what you talked about. After that by week we started to see andrew. Thomas be more and more comfortable and a lot that comes into that is something that we talked about a ton before the season and during the season when he was struggling in any of the rookies were having problems. Is that the messed up. In abbreviated preseason slash off season really hindered early impacts from a lot of rookies throughout the league. It also led to a lot of injuries. You argue saquon. Injury was a direct result of not having enough contact from preseason games having not enough contact from practices. all of that stuff led to issues similar to what we saw with andrew thomas and it's not an easy transition to be thrown in at left tackle in your first season. Nate solar ops out. And you are expected to cover and protect the blind side of daniel jones. Who is the franchise quarterback being in that situation doing it right away even with a full. Preseason is a daunting task and there's not a lot of guys that are even capable of just plugging in at left tackle right away. We saw a lot of guys this year in the same class like tristan works and like g drake wills that we're playing right tackle to start the season because that was where it was easier to slot them and now the obviously they had that right tackle background in college but they were put in a lot better situations because of that. They weren't asked to play left. Tackle against the best pass rushers every single game and we saw struggling from thomas early on when facing some of these really really lee elite rushers but as the season continued he started to look more comfortable started to look a lot better and i think that just from that progression after the bye week when he's able to settle down and figuring himself out is the best indication of y he can be successful and continue to improve especially just simply because chrissy. He has a normal preseason. This year. I think now that he has a full normal. Preseason is why he's going to do a lot better and twenty twenty one and he has also really seen the the speed of the game in the. Sec is about as close as you're going to get to nfl football but it's still college pretty much. Every guy on an nfl team was the best player on his college team. The this would be like facing the top one percent of power five programs. We can week out. There isn't a single conference at the collegiate level. That can really prepare you for that and where you can get that experience so i think really. All of that is working in thomas favor at the very least he. We should expect him to take a step forward now. A breakout candidate. That i think really depends on how you how you define a breakout especially for an offensive lineman you know. Do we think he's going to be a pro bowler all pro player. Yeah i i don't know and honestly that's so much of that. His name recognition. He might have to wait a couple years before he can unseat. Some of the more established tackles That's all the reason why i think breakout cannons tend to gravitate towards the skill positions. Just because they've got concrete stats. You can point to and say yes. This guy had a twelve hundred yard eleven touchdown season that he obviously broke out. But if we see the giants pass rush or pass block win rate jump way up and we see thomas Maybe get into that ten top fifteen of you know pass block winds and see the giants running average. Start to go up to the left side. I think that would constitute you to a pretty solid breakout. Yeah the that for me is if we actually just see progress on the field and consistency. But chris i agree with your take there that him making a pro bowl or making one of those all pro lists more so. The pro bowl is based on name recognition. But the one thing that giants players have always benefited from when they're having a good season. It's just the fact that there are so many giants fans not only across the country but just the sheer size of the new york. Market is sometimes enough to benefit a guy like andrew thomas who might be having improved year but not necessarily an elite year could be enough for him to make it onto a pro bowl roster but regardless i think for me for it to be considered a progression and a big season for him is just is just consistency is for him just to have more games where he is limited in the amount of pressures that he gives up and i know we can points of those analytics that you talked about the pass rush win rate but overall if we we just see better wraps we see strong performances against good pass rushers not just the weaker end of the schedule that for me is.

daniel jones Thomas tristan three guys two guys twelve hundred yard new york today andrew andrew thomas last year twenty twenty yard This year thomas g drake second part this year one percent chris

"Mgm radio which was the dodgers radio flagship station. He was calling the game And there are clips. There's a clip of him out there to a calling that final homerun And not nearly as as exciting or excitable as hodges for probably for obvious reasons. Ernie harwell was calling the game for for television. The new york giants flagship television station at the time was w x channel. Eleven which i think carries both mets and yankees games now but interestingly that game on local television channel eleven was also for that game being simulcast on the nbc television network and interestingly it was the first ever coast to coast. Live telecast of a major league baseball game so there probably a lot of people who heard the ernie hall not a bad call and of itself. that's also available floating around there on youtube etcetera but again not nearly the verve and the powerful excitement that you heard in the hodges call if you were listening to the game outside of new york. You've probably heard the gordon mcclendon call on something called the liberty broadcasting system. Yeah he said. The giant yelled out. The giants win the pennant. I think only once as opposed to hide his his. Like i don't know twelve but that was probably the more more or listen to broadcast. If you believe that there was another radio call by name. Al helfer on the mutual broadcasting system as well as two guys calling calling it for a spanish language network. I'm not quite sure what that network was named but buck canal and fairly low that you say that feel. Oh ramirez go. Sorry it's been a long day and there was also a re recording by nat allbright Who recorded or re recorded the game and For for later broadcasts as well so there are a whole bunch of places. You could have heard this game but but none more memorable than that of a russ. Hodges i believe last year. If i'm not mistaken. The library of congress even inducted that broadcast of hodges into the national recording registry. That's how iconic That call was one of the few rare moments of onfield greatness for this new york. Baseball giants team obviously followed up. Nineteen fifty four with the ultimate prize. The world series But of course alas the team along with the brooklyn dodgers across the river bolted from new york in nineteen fifty seven four the greater pastors of california and leaving broken hearts everywhere. But we're going to get into the story of of the giants and the guy behind it. Horace stoneham it's a fascinating tale. You'll get we'll get into it but he inherited the team from his dad. Let's say he wasn't the hardest working guy until his dad kinda put him through his paces in order to succeed if he could rise to the level of of managing a team like this in in he did so for sure after some hard Some hard times in some Some hard knocks in in the real world and and then some and It's very interesting that we have this conversation With our pal this week. Steve shredder Because his book is coming out in a couple of weeks time it's called forty years giant the life of horace stone. And you'll hear in our chat with steve few moments not a whole lot. That's obvious about the the life and times of this guy because he'd liked it that way he didn't he was kind of a modest character Some would argue his team kind of suffered from from a modesty Factor as well in the against the backdrop of.
