"Accident and an investigation. All traffic gets diverted to the car lines and traffic is a mess. Bumper to bumper from 15. All the way down to interchange 12. I'm Karen Stewart in extra port in less than 10 on 10 10 wins. It is the Monday after another violent weekend in the city. At least two men were killed in the latest spate of shootings over five Burgess early today, including a man shot in the leg in Times Square. And there are new questions about reports of a police slowdown Today wins Glenn Schuck wraps it all up. We've learned at least five additional shooting since last night men wounded in each case Separate shootings and Woodhaven Harlem bed Stuy, Brownsville, then this morning at 46 Broadway, near Times Square. Brooklyn continues to be the borough with the most gunfire is shootings have doubled since last year, and the borough president, Eric Adams, telling a rally yesterday that police should be investigated for unintentional slowdown. Councilmember Ritchie Torres agrees. Like every agency, including the NYPD has to be held accountable for performance. When the New York City Housing Authority does something wrong, we will hold them accountable. We have to extend the same kind of accountability to the way we have seen a doubling of shooting victims and shooting incidents in New York City that is unacceptable. There has to be accountability for public safety and performance, and the agency that's responsible for public safety is the New York City Police Department. The PBA calls the leadership of Torres and Adam's shameful They say the real reason for the violence. Is there defunding the police? Glen shot 10 10 wins. Here in fight Bush. Well, if you want to do dinner and a movie on Labor Day weekend, you'll be able to do it. In New Jersey Governor Murphy tweeted that endure dining in theaters will be able to resume starting Friday. Murphy says the restaurant's been some of the business was hardest hit by the pandemic, he says, with continuing progress in the state and proper precautions they can open with limited capacity. That means 25% 6 ft spaces between tables and everybody who's not eating and neither re master up. Guidelines are similar to ones offered earlier in the summer before spikes in other parts of the country led New Jersey to pull back more details on all of this expected later today, the free ride and boarding at the rear over on city buses starting today, the empty returns to full fare collection and regular front boarding this after months of no fair collection and rear boarding in an attempt to protect bus drivers during the pandemic. More than 130 transit workers are believed to have died of Copan 19 authority. Now, though, says it has vintage retrofitting some 5800 buses with safety barriers, and they'll start expecting fairs again. CWU officials those say that they want better enforcement of a mask mandate. Course. All this is going to affect your commute. So stay with tented wins for traffic in transit on the ones wins. News time 8 45 Now joining me on the news line is Commissioner Shay Police Commissioner Dermot Shea. Good morning, sir. Morning, Kathleen, How are you? Good. Good. How are you, sir? I'm doing Well, Thank you. It was another. Unfortunately, busy weekend for you, folks. First off thoughts on the level of violence this weekend. Well, I mean, it's it's really let's be frank. It's been a busy summer. It's been a trend. You know, Lauren more data collecting. We had. I think the final tally with 50 shooting incidents this weekend. Excuse me this week. Andi. It's something that obviously we're working very hard to turn around. I could tell you that detectives made arrests on 19 separate shooting or homicide incidents just in the last week. Now that there's a lag So they're making arrest on all the cases, the gun arrests coming in, But, Azad said, and I'll keep tryin, Kathleen we need We need some help on this from policies and laws that would go a long way. As far as that goes, Do you feel that there's a sense of the port with the mayor in terms of the so called diaphragm law? Do you think you're gonna get some changes to that? It's where I'm hopeful. I really am. I step back and look at that whole law. You know the chokehold pieces not, I think widely recognized what everyone is speaking about. It's that Changes to the diaphragm, and I think that Hopefully, hopefully they'll be affected in some way, shape or form because that that really is a An obstacle for many offices that around on the street these days, and it's something quite frankly, they shouldn't have to worry about. Now, I would be remiss if I didn't bring up with the borough president in Brooklyn and also Councilman Tories brought up in terms and you heard that in Glen Shocks piece about the possibility of a slowdown in terms of response to the shootings. Do you have any sense of that going on? You know, I really don't You know, I think people need then I think I think I certainly hope that they understand what's happening here. It's all about math. When you've got hundreds of millions of dollars from the budget, we have literally taken thousands of officers off of the streets this summer. And it's done at a time. When we know violence is going to peak, so it's it's It wasn't a surprise. We were transparent. We told people with these negotiations were going on that this was likely to happen. It's the same conversation. Kathleen When you talk about people saying that arrested down Well, of course, the rest of them They've been designed to be down through policy for the last 6 to 8 years. And now you have thousands of less cops on the street. So it would be, you know, a miracle if arrests were up, and any assertion that the men and women of this department are slowing down is just Really shameful at this point. One of the other issues that came up It just kind of story we have on this morning is about the bodega owners who were concerned about that lady going off the knife in one of the bodegas and then her being right back out on the street. They want to talk to you about this whole thing about desk appearance tickets for people who are involved in things that aren't actually technically violent. That are pretty scary. Is there something in the way that ways that those things could be handled? Yeah, I am. I'm looking forward to that meeting to not only Bodega owner's A Restaurant association. Is there anyone else and and elected officials to? I think that any time you know well, attention laws are put into place. I think there should be a period. I mean, when, when we spoke out 89 months ago about the veil reform law. There was the common refrain. Refrain Wass. There's not enough data. Well, we have a lot more data now. So let's take a look and let's see. Do we have things exactly as we want can be adjustments made that was already one round of adjustments. A desk appearance ticket for individuals that habitually go out and commit crimes, and you released him back into the community. It erodes trust with the police department because people get frustrated when they see the individual right back on the street. Andi also, you know when you look at the bodega owners and what they've faced with cold it and the law Of Customer base and trying to stay open and then to have been victimized. Whether it's through burglaries or hear through, you know, common theft. It's just You know, I really feel for them. One more quick thing before we before I let you go..

"I pity you so insane. It really is Kabul new would you so our feel-good segment we're here. We got some great. Have some great things to talk about. Today it's a great turn formaldehyde generous. I was just GonNa say Larry that we've quick talks about how mean Ellen is and then thankfully we have a feel good segment where we're going to talk about the night celebrities because we'll just rub it into her face. Hi How much you suck Ellen. Try Being Nice People. Check out these people do a nice shit so first of all. I mentioned this before but John. Krasinski is doing this. You Know Youtube show some good news and he did a live virtual prom a couple of days ago which was really cute. John's feathers perform billy. Eyelash chance the rapper. It was it was. It was very sweet Perform some songs. They chatted basically. He did this for all those kids who had their prompts cancelled or won't be able to have their problems and it was just really sweet. Like I said he's been doing very cute things on on that show if you WANNA watch And obviously it's just. It's nice to see the John's brothers. 'cause you know there are all separated right now and it was nice to see them all on one screen from their own homes. Yeah I agree. I think that John Krinsky can set a great example for Ellen honestly on how nicely has been doing. I mean obviously we see him interacting with celebrities and whatnot but he's also interacting with everyday people. Yeah Yeah and it's it was very cool. I do think The show is really great and then there were a couple of things that I wanted to mention one. Is Michael Shy from SNL? Saturday night live. He unfortunately lost his grandmother to complications from chronic virus earlier this month which is absolutely terrible and he did post about it on his instagram but he also shared that he has offered to pay one month's rent for the one hundred sixty apartments in his late grandma's New York City Housing Authority building that she lived in Hebron in Scrim. It's crazy to me. That residents of public housing are still expected to pay their rent. So many New Yorkers can even work obviously. I can't offer much help by myself. I know that's just a drop in the bucket so I really hope. The city has a better plan for debt forgiveness for all the people in public housing at the very least so. I just thought that was really nice. Obviously somebody like you know. Just lost his grandmother and reaching out to make sure all those people that live near her are able to pay another month's rent because it's New York. That's it's crazy. I mean rents already crazy. People truly will not be able to pay their rent right I think it's fucking awesome that he did that. Honestly it just it. It just shows how big of a heart Someone like has just other people were doing this like yeah you could take that money out of your pocket because you know that you're secure enough and just ready for the end. I mean my God New York City run like I'm just thinking about how much money that actually is. It's a shit ton. I was looking at apartments in California earlier. Not For any reason. Besides the fact you're about running away and Joining Outer Banks cast and I was looking at Apartments there and I was shocked to see the apartment. I can get in California with what I pay now. Compared to the apartment I have in New York City. It was I mean yeah it really wasn't obviously. La is still really. It's still expensive. It's just it's just it's crazy near and Yeah absolutely a ended does make you think that Michael Chicken patties people's rent may be Ellen DeGeneres complainer employee's O'Brien Ellen. Might say is out here. He'd he's not he's not host of SNL fucking run SNL. He's out you're paying for all these people's rents Oh my God. I know I'm sorry that we keep going back to her but I know I know it's hard not to and then also this picture that went viral because I do love recognizing the teachers that are working so hard right now and we have tons of Teacher listeners and we love you guys so much and I thought. This picture is so great From Florida this woman shared a photo of her daughter. Hannah and her teacher. Katie Ricca on on facebook and she the mom had wrote. Hannah's class has zoom session each evening last night. She got really saddened. Kind of shutdown. Today teacher came over and hung out for a bit. They chatted read books in just talked. This woman has five kids at home and she still sat in my driveway for an hour. To make sure handed was okay and it's just a picture of her daughter on one side. The driveway and her teacher on the other with the with an open book and Nassar's you know I mean it's just one of those things that makes you tear up because it's just a simple gesture but goes such a long way for these kids who are struggling like not being in their normal school environment I agree with you friend. I feel like like you said these things. Just make you emotional and yeah we appreciate all the teachers out there and especially you know My cousin she's a teacher and I talked about this before but just hearing from her like how upset she truly is that she cannot be with her students. It's yeah you know. We're not teachers. We don't understand without bond is like but teachers really. Do you know as as a student. You don't realize how much your teacher cares about you but when you get older and you have teacher friends you realize how much these people actually really care about their students and hate being away from them and would do anything to help them just having genuine conversations with my cousin about how truly upset she is that she can't go back to work right now Help these kids out that she is used to helping out every day. She has phone calls with the parents. They're trying she's trying to teach in any way shape or form I just want everyone to know how much we appreciate yet. and keep keep trying to help your students as much as possible and I hope that in return you know hopefully schools are treating you right as well because yeah everyone knows that. This is just hard time without as well. Nobody knows when people are going back to school. Officially date keeps unchain Jane Who knows if people even go back this year at all so how everyone just all the teachers just stay strong and make intentionally And the last thing which is fantastic and I think you know just another great way to deal with this situation Ashton Kutcher meal. Kunas put out a message that they created a quarantine wine. It is A PINOT NOIR. Which is great and one hundred. Percents of the profits will be donated if you go to official quarantine wine dot com. They have little video message from the two of them. Which is just I mean these two. I just love seeing them together. I don't know why if you on Ashton it's a it's the nostalgia of seeing them no matter what they're doing but if I see a picture of video of the two of them immediately my head is just wow. I just can't leave Jackie and Kelso's ended up together. It's so beautiful at every time I know and I'm always like wow. That was Mula. Kunas is I kissed. It is just every tyke line. Yeah he's just you can't make this shit up even jealous movie. No it's it's pure Hudson. I couldn't be happier for them. Just a beautiful beautiful love story and so they are selling this wine right now and like I said one hundred percent appropriate were Profits profits will be donated and they have meals thoroughly. Vetted a bunch of these charities that they are going to donate to They'll go to give directly direct relief. Frontline Responders Fund and America's Food Fund. And they have created this Wine with the I believe it is F. Forget what they said. I forget where it is. knocking point. Excuse me a handful of knocking point co founder and they just set this up together and now obviously people are drinking during this time drinking bottles of wine and this is a great way to get that wine end donating doing some good one hundred roller cool bottle. You can they in the video. It's cool if you watch. It's like this you know thanks to an minutes. Giant blanket ban the quarantine is underneath are toasting to and you can so you can write on it you can give to give it to people you can thank those you. WanNa thank on the bottle and give it to them. So it's a really great idea what those to do in those show. Pass me firm. I say I like me and we have the LA SCHNITT joining us. It is fantastic but guys during this time. I know a lot of you. I know I am are.

"So what are the guiding principles of creativity is that some of you very best ideas. Come out of sheer frustration products like honest tea or cliff bar olders dyson these all came about because their founders couldn't find the beverages or energy bars or shoes or or vacuum cleaners that they wanted so they invented them but in the case of Tristan Walker. I think it's safe to say that he didn't just start from a place of mild frustration. He actually started from a place of being fed up even angry because for most of his life he had felt completely league ignored totally overlooked whenever he walked into the shaving. I'll drugstore virtually all the big shaving brands were making products that worked well on men with relatively straight hair but tristen couldn't find a high quality razor that worked on his curly facial hair without leaving razor bumps olivarez neck Kajol line and he knew that like him many African American men were dealing with the exact same problem so he decided to design bevill a shaving system with a simple single blade razor that was easy on his face and he wanted everything about the product to look and feel great not like the dusty boxes of shaving products for African American men that we seem to be on the bottom shelves at the drugstore and his ambition to build a black owned and led consumer Marand as big as Johnson Johnson or proctor and gamble but of course when I tried to raise money from all those VC firms on sand hill road in Silicon Valley and he got a lot of knows but eventually he was able to launch his company with a razor some shaving cream but of oil and brush and over the past five years his brand has grown to include more than thirty specialized hair and beauty products for men and women which are now sold and lots of big retailers lers across the country a few weeks ago. Tristan sat down to tell me how he did it in front of a live audience at the Lincoln Theater in Washington. DC tristen Walker Central. I'll take it so let's start. Let's start at the beginning. Tell me about about out your childhood knew you grew up in Queens where I like to describe. It is a bit of the Rosa grew from concrete story. I grew up in Queens New York projects. It's Welfare Bouts of homelessness that sort of stuff right and I realized very early at one goal in life and as as wealthy as possible as quickly as possible Salaam. I realized three ways to do it. I was to be an actor athlete that didn't work second second was to work on Wall Street that didn't work in the last entrepreneurship and then thank goodness. I came to that realization. We were a little boy. A A your dad died. He was killed killed and you grew up with an older brother and your mom. What did your mom do yet for work so oh my mom worked three jobs mainly New York City Housing Authority Administrative Assistant? She spent some time working for Time Warner Cable and she did some retail all at the same time within seven days. I don't know how she did it. She did it. Thank goodness for her. It was not easy but she persevered and as a result of I think her perseverance good fortune beam I graduate college in my family and she she really in what what do you remember about like your neighborhood growing up as a kid I mean would did you do. Did you add in do much because I couldn't do much like my father was killed. When I was three years old? I don't remember too much about him other than the fact that he was killed when I was three years old which is a little bit telling to Kinda type of environment that I did grow up in so you know I lived probably the first six seven years of my life live in Jamaica Queens New York forty projects in the time I turned around seven years old. We moved to flushing Queens. Another project can development and it was much of the same right. My mother was like you're going to be the one you're not gonNa go through this stuff very disciplined. Stay home. Get Your studies and you're not going outside. When I snuck snuck outside? She caught me. I got in a lot of trouble but that was really kind of my life right. Get to school get home. Do you work repeat and you know that discipline actually Kinda got me to wearing them. Now school easy for you has a kid yeah. I was a good student because the discipline that was inspired me I always excelled right. I tended to be at least up until high school anyway at or near the top of my class you know and I kinda slow down when I say that stuff because by the time I got to high school. I realized I didn't even know what a verb was right. I wouldn't do this entire time. All the way up until my high school years doing really really well at the top of my class not even knowing what verb now and that sort of thing was as a teenager you ended up going to this really elite private boarding school hotchkiss in Connecticut the way I like to describe posh kisses is the first time I got to see how the other half lived. I went to school literally rockefellers Ford's right and I learned a couple of things first name mattered to being wealthy wasn't same as being rich and the last and probably the most important was I can compete with each and every one of them while while while I didn't know Oh what a verb was I learned and by the end of my four years they're you know on a roll like that. Sort of thing you know is then absolutely just wonderful experience for me but transformative in a little bit different from how I grew up was it was the transition for you when you got there because you were like fourteen years old. I've been living away from home since I was thirteen fourteen years old and were the first few months at hard for you. academically we get to the school and I realize I don't even have a computer and you know all of my other classmates had computers that sort of thing and I went to leave as the English professor who is my adviser at the time and I remember he took me to this basement. We're all used textbooks are and then he was old compaq like Presidio L. Computer that we had the like hall out and take it to my room so academically. It was very tough because I wasn't equipped with the tools to compete but over the years accelerating so you fish you go to Stony Brook University New York to study economics. Most most students don't necessarily know what they're gonNa do but did you have a sense of what you want to pursue their and what you thought you would do after I mean I was always thinking about the after I wanted to get wealthy yeah I was pretty singular in that help very singular in that hope and overtime that's kind of morphed and changed and the things that are important Ed Morrison changed but I knew I was very very very focused on how to get there and Wall Street was the next greatest option. All this silicon valley stuff at new idea about my world was New England so you're thinking do this degree and I'll go into finance plows e- economics is the closest degree we had at Stony Brook again to Wall Street Okay and in between my first and second year of university I got an internship and Lehman Brothers back office halfway through I I said I want to try some of this front office stuff so I left that enjoined trading desk at the time just observing so when you graduate so you you went actually went to work for Leman and then as a traitor and then everything and eventually JP Morgan in that time at that time time period. Did you still think this is what I should be doing. This is my sort of path to the worst years of my life. This is two thousand and five when I joined the company and as a traitor. I'm not laughing at his concern to make sure people get jobs, I'm laughing if he actually believes that that is the goal of Amazon, well that you should what are there should be some kind of lottery on the jobs, and by the way, I'm not criticizing Amazon for that.
