"Thank you so much for joining us on Wait, Wait. Don't tell me what a joy to talk to you. The joy has been mine. Thank you all so very much for having me. Bye bye. Finally, there used to be a time when we would fantasize about traveling to other worlds or having superpowers. These days. We just dream about being able to go outside. Kelli Edwards is living the dream. She's an explorer scuba diver, adventurer and host of mysterious islands on the travel channel. Peter asked her if she had to give up travel during the pandemic. I actually have not because I'm also a pilot, and so I have not been stuck at home because I have capabilities of taking myself right like to go take me with you. You let's go to Catalina. We'll take it. We'll take the C plane. Well, scuba dive near the arcade there. Come on, You know it's going to actually learn to dive in Catalina, because you're a diver to I'm a diver's Well, I am a bond girl, Laura Cross Off double 07 in real life, So whatever you guys want to do, let's do it. How did you get interested in being basically an adventurer? Well, I started taking road trips with my parents at a very, very young age and I when I started to look at the world and watching that geo and travel channel in all this, I'm like, Oh, I should go to these places. So there are a lot of us who would just save up the money to get an economy class ticket. You decided you would actually learn to fly and fly yourself. Yes, indeed. And that came about because I saw one man in a small airplane landing at Burbank Airport between Delta and Southwest and JetBlue and I literally Googled at the gate. One man, small aircraft in general aviation came up. I had no idea that you don't have to be a military pilot to become a pilot. And so I came back and took a discovery flight from a Groupon for 100 bucks. And got hooked and sick in the plane hooked in sick, Really? Because wait a minute, So the only time I've ever flown myself in a small private plane, General Aviation, I got incredibly sick. And I said to myself, Well, that's the end of this for me. Never again, and I've stuck to that. But you the same thing happened to you and your reaction was like, Okay, Great When you've all cleaned up the vomit, I'm going to learn to fly. Let me tell you why, And I'm not crazy. Okay, I just have to tell the truth. But I flew over my ex boyfriend's house and I snapped a picture from the air and I sent it to him, and his reaction was priceless. He's like How did you get this picture? And where are you? And I was like, Oh, I just need to be able to do this. Whenever I feel like it. That's a I thought you were going to say I vomited out the window and then be I love that your Pettiness drove you to learn how to fly an airplane girl. You're like hashtag goals. Thank you. I don't know if your adventures have ever called upon survival skills. Do you have any survival skills? I do have my wilderness. First state certification. I'm going to go get my avalanche training in October. Back in Colorado. I'm always ready for the apocalypse. I literally I'm literally coming to move in with you. I am coming to move in with you because you are Lara Croft. You really are. You are in my eyes. My avalanche training was stay the hell away from Avalon. Would worry about, like being with you in the apocalypse because you'd be too good at it, And they'd just be like lagging behind out of breath. I grab you by that collar. We'd be out of there. Okay, but everyone always says if anything goes wrong, call Kelly. She's gonna load up the aircraft is gonna have all the gear and we're going to survive. And I say that so I'm like, Choose your friends wisely. I'm one of those friends shoes, but I mean, it is humbling to know that you have all these skills for the apocalypse and in my case would be like Well, Peter could moderate the discussion of the campfire tonight. "One big happy family. All right. Yeah so tell me I I was like I said I. Most of the people who have been hosting the show with me on my Israeli playlist are a bit older than you. That's why I was so excited to hear from a fifteen year old. Tell me how in the world did you get into Israeli music so I was actually really reluctant to it at first? I have some really good friends who were always really listened to a lot of Israeli pop music and things like that and I went to do. I've now onto Zionist camp for eight years nine years at this point now not really six years really more like it six or seven and I never was really into a few years ago. My friends actually played me. Naar first song where I started listening and then I got more and more into listening to music and learning about it. So our first song was Barbie by static inventory. Why that song? Why did that Kinda pull you in? I think it has something to do with the beats. I am a musician and I think that probably had a lot to do with it but also I think at the point where they started playing me that kind of music. I was beginning to speak Hebrew more fluently and beginning. Toss understand what I was listening to own very cool. I'm assuming you've been to Israel or maybe not. I have three times. I was hoping to go this summer. But it doesn't look like that's going to happen. You never know it's still early you know we'll see what do hopefully things will be better in a few months. I don't know But how did you find our show? So my mom started listening when Erica told her and actually through facebook and I was told by my mom to start listening she thought I would really enjoy it. I am heavily involved in. Us Y in the Hagley old the New Jersey Staten Island region and I am currently on and Israel Fares General Board where my initiative for the years actually to write a biweekly music blog about Israeli Like the history and I listened to the show also to get some ideas. Are we helpful? Very the top ten songs every Jew should know has been very helpful. Love that can. Is it a web address that we can all look up and check out? Yeah it's Abby Hoberman Dot wicks site dot com. It's a wickes blog. Abby Hoberman DOT website dot com. Everyone should check out abbey's Israeli music blog. That's really great. I love that. And we're going to get to know abby a little bit more and find out about her taste in Israeli music. What a fifteen year old would enjoy and the kinds of songs that she listens to. It should be a little different from what we're used to from my Israeli playlist. Those who co-hosted with me we are thrilled to have you and Tell me where are we going next by Covari? Okay any Thing you'd like to tell us about your. How'd you find out? That's a song from back in the seventies. I think maybe earlier yeah do. How did you find out about that song? We dance to it at Camp every Saturday night. After dollar we have record is really dancing. And it's one of my personal favorites love that Yoyo by coverage on my.

"The radio six thirty nine that Nyland Frankie an alley from Staten Island jersey, like everybody doesn't. So what do we call out jersey out now? The court the Frank. He was so happy to be in Staten Island at Hillcrest. He's only fifteen minutes from his house. Rollout. When I must. I must say we had a great time, and we left together. Sorry. I missed it. But I I went over to Lorenzo's, and I said hi great team over laments owes a club. I always play. I walked across the beautiful prowl lowest. I just want you to sing beautiful people. No. Towels this time. And one won only police officers. There says Joe you New York New York seeing you speak. I'm just here. And Joe degrade Joe purchase Degray, and he just went Joe Piscopo here and Julian mealy was their joy in Malay, FOX and friends. And I said in the middle of the all the pictures and everything around the step and repeat thing. I said I wanted to meet you. She's great. I want your love. Schmidt. Every morning. I'm not often yet. Quite a following. And she's a great guy. Does a great job. And I wanna say, hey, thanks for being. It's great that a national correspondent like that goes and supports this the blues lives matter, and because the politicians airless I was wrong job Borelli would have been there. He's Joe Clinton doing Martin. He always early on. But no, I didn't see anyone else. See the with three events that night. You had that you had Scotla Baidoa's ardent elation that was that was veterans with PTSD, and then you had an event of coalition opposing mayor Blasio's homeless shelter policy on Staten Island. So three big events. All drew several hundred people all happening at the same time people stay with me on this Frankie Fibro. So they're gonna put like homeless next to people who are paying a lot of money for their homes, and they were put home a homeless shelters in Staten Island. Well, this is a citywide a plan of the mayor's. So the the Staten Island aspect that has gotten so much attention. And has to do with a homeless shelter that they're planning on the north shore. And a lot of the a lot of the residents are upset because they feel that it's a little too big. And that, you know, they don't feel that it's in keeping with the character of the neighborhood, but this is a citywide thing. So the mayor's plan is to open ninety new homeless shelters across or five boroughs over the next five years. So this is not going over well in the communities that are expected to house these community should have every right to vote. What comes in? And what doesn't come in as simple as that. They put the taxes that we pay in New York, New jersey, Staten Island, included, of course, it unless I heard it was still in New York, Staten Island. Inspite of what many of them, you know, they should you don't want something in your neighborhood, you should vote. And now now may have humbly suggest to this de Blasio administration to work with cardinal Dolan work with the Catholic church. Not only in supplying homeless shelters in the affordable housing that cardinal Dolan ounce ladies afternoon, a big shout out to Catholic charities. They're doing that. But also in public schools, the public schools, they just can't do million dollars a Newark, New Jersey. Booker was there and governor Christie went down, and they went on Oprah hundred million dollars going. No one knows where dying one went right? So my suggestion humbly, though, disaster on the radio, I'm not a politician. Clearly, maybe maybe she work within the Catholic school system because those schools are great, and maybe bring a little of that into the public school system. Just. The other thing about the homeless shelters. If you're not gonna put them in every borough where are you going to put them are you into scruple the homeless people and stick them in one area where nobody wants them. Unfortunately for this. I think everybody in every borough has to kind of make a concession here. Say look we need to have a homeless shelter here. And that's the way it's going to be the problem is is that the mayor wants to do it in a cloak of secrecy. He doesn't want to inform the public in the areas that he wants. And that's to me. That's the bigger problem is mental illness is to me, the primary reason of homelessness, mental illness. You see on the street we see it every day to people outside right down to walk down the street. And I looked at these poor guys man, and you want to go and help them on how to help them, by the way. I gotta do this. I got there was a port authority homeless van tune, no vans. I saw Madison Square Garden at the Rangers game last week, and it said homeless assistance. How about that? That's great problem is those homeless people. Don't want to get on those don't want to go to the shelters that point. That's part of the wrangled people off the street, and they're going to put them next to Al Tula Tula household with you and your kid in your white. And would you be okay with that? You know, what if that if that was the case, then, you know, that's that's get off my lawn. The first thing. Off my lawn compassion, we have to have compassion. Excuse me. You have to have compassion for these people. Plenty of places there are plenty of places where where they can build homeless shelters where people can scream about property values and all this other stuff or whatever. But you know, what the bottom line is everyone's taxes keep going up your property values are going to be where they. And I say this respectfully there are so many blown out areas. And I walked those streets blown out devastated forgotten areas of the cities of the United States in New Jersey in New York all over go to these areas that are most at risk most stress, and maybe you could create a home. I'm just saying because the land is there the buildings are there. They all now they're taking over the turn into drug dens. And maybe take it over there. When you do I go into a community where people work so hard to come into this country. Let me finish. And they go in. They learn the language that the laws they pay the astronomical taxes. You should have the right in your community say who's moving including the cost of living houses, and our friend assemblyman, John Brown, Nick is so right now, you can't just take somebody go you don't like where you living. We're going to put you in that that big expensive neighborhood why because you deserve to be there. Excuse me. People worked hard to get to where they get. You can't just get. Stuff away in that regard. I on the and that's jersey thing. And I agree with you on that. I don't think it's a right that people should back to wear the problem and writes from the way, we should go but Honduras, Guatemala back. That's why we have the border problem because they don't fix where the problem is starting that problem in New Jersey has been going on now for more than forty years. They continue to kick the can down the road while fighting the federal government to prevent this from happening and they lost. So now all of a sudden these towns are rushing to catch up to the federal mandate by putting in a certain percentage of affordable housing some towns, did it smartly. A lot of towns are going to have major problems with that. Because the school going to be overcrowded because they have to put in a certain amount of affordable housing in Intel's that have expanded the the point the point here is why why can't we make it easier in New York City, I'm talking about. Why can't we make it easier for homeless people to get help the city tried to do something where people who are working who were living in shelters? They tried to get them homes in New Jersey. Have you sign this form? We'll get you a place in New Jersey. You can move their whatever here's the problem. There was no oversight. They paid landlords a year of ranked upfront. And what are these guys? Do. They put them in places. They couldn't live in. Then we're in there were unlivable never taken in the court in the city has no answer is oversight. Temperate Cisco, did you see that John starts at a piece wasn't an old piece amendement. Oh. This problem in San Francisco with homeless Frankie Francisco talk about taxes talk about least affordable community in the whole country. We city they let anybody in the and and the homeless problem there is is opposed to be worse than any Eddie. And if you see the video the video doesn't lie there's tents in Los Angeles. Pussy. Gavin Newsom makes the governor of California he was mayor of San Francisco, and they'd go they act like they go after Donald Trump and the border take care the homeless. How about when you think about Alon, Omar don't get me started to leave Michigan and Minnesota this homeless there as well. What are they talking about how bad Israel is? And don't do business with Israel. And could you help could they go back and help the people in Barack Obama? He should be walking the streets of his Senate since day one. I've been saying almost ten years now at that. He should go back to the south side of Chicago and help build that up with all the people those kids kill the ready this weekend, Chicago, that's not a word not a word from the media and not a word from the Democrats. Yeah. Well, I'm less familiar with the homeless situation in Chicago, Michigan San Francisco, but in terms of mayor Blasio's a homeless shelter plan. I think the the reasons that it's getting so much opposition. Everyone recognizes the need to do something about homelessness in New York City. And I'm sure there are a lot of people that were. We're at that homeless event on on Saturday, and they can call in and comment if they want, but I think the three issues that aren't sitting right with people is that certain communities like in the north shore of Staten Island at this forty four victory boulevard site, they're talking about a facility for something like two or three hundred families. Whereas in the south shore. They're the south shore only has to get at twenty two bed facility. So there's a feeling that a lot of neighborhoods are being are being forced to shoulder a little bit more of the burden than other neighborhoods. Are also, you know, this is smack dab in the middle of the bay street rezoning, which is tremendously upscale neighborhood so to put a homeless shelter. They're alive or residents feel sort of out of character with where they're going also because it's a homeless shelter. The city doesn't have to go through what they call the Euler process uniform land use review process, which every other private development has to go through. So the city doesn't have to follow its own rules. But if you were a private developer trying to build some sort of private housing you'd have to go through this lengthy Euler process, which the city itself doesn't have to go through. That's why you're seeing this lawsuit to stop him. Where is everybody wants they closed Rikers wears ever knew there. They're going to go into other communities, right that the mayor chooses that the people in those communities will not be able to vote on my right? Well, we probably not. I mean, I don't think they're going to have to they're going to be subject to the Euler process either. I mean in Staten Island, we're not going to get jail. But the other boroughs are getting the when the mayor's here, you know, he was in Las Vegas over the weekend back. He's back eight seven seven nine seven twenty nine ninety nine. I see we're going to go to traffic in the second. I'm looking at a headline poacher killed eaten..

"It's weird. I'm hitting the heavy stuff this Friday. That's okay. I can handle heavy stuff. It's. Hard to think about I also want to say to that, obviously. And it sounds like you probably have your own version of this too. You know, we are pondering the way it's affected your life, and we are sort of exploring how can really mentally take. It's toll on you. But it it also sounds like you do feel great sadness for the kid who died in his family and friends to. It doesn't sound like there's I'm sure there's the temptation for an internet commenter to hear this, go wives this guy making it all about him. And. It sounds to me. I just wanted to like cut that off at the past. Because it doesn't sound you've indicated through the time that you're like, yeah. No. My whole town is grieving over this thing. I was involved. And that's it. It's it's. It's just another. It's just another aspect of this wrap your head around. Yeah. You know, what happened was? Bollocks? Remember thinking was at least what I was thinking of who who is this person. I just kept thinking hope they don't have kids like, please, don't let them have kids. You know, it looks like it looks like an older guy. I was like these don't make it that some kids just lost their dad. It's like, I don't want that on my conscience and. I don't know which one's worse. Right comparatively. The I think I think about him all the time. Is it still three years later? Do you is this have you do you think about it every day still? It depends definitely every week. You know, I'll have I'll have to struggle sleeping and stuff like that at times. Just because I'm seeing it in my head. Yeah. I think about all the time. It's hard when. People complain to me sometimes about small things and. I've had this with my sister a lot because she knows what I've been through as a whole and I love her. But she is kind of one of those turns Manhattan nights if you will were awfully okay. So let's if if I can let's pause and talk about this 'cause you and I just clicked heart. That's explain this. 'cause you and I are both giggling at this shared closer. So okay. Okay. We're gonna take this gonna be just a little bit of departure from the story that I definitely wanna hear an a melancholic story said story, but let us you just said something, very interesting. So when you grow up, you tell me if you agree or disagree when you grow up in northern New Jersey, Staten Island or Long Island. There's a very very weird relationship with Manhattan, and there's a very weird relationship with people who leave those places to go to men, that's what you're referring to because you were just dripping with a little bit of scorn when you said, a what was the phrase you used? Mended manhattanite turned turned. She's a turned manhattanite. The idea of being a turned manhattanite is a little bit of a turn off sometimes to the people from those outlying region surrounding men. Yeah. It's like it's like, suddenly they moved to the city and forgot that they grew up in a suburb. Did you have this to growing up in Long Island? I know in north jersey there's a little bit of a thing where if somebody's dad worked in the city that was a thing we could use to make fun of them. Like that was almost thing. We'd say to say like, oh, you think you're better than us because your dad works in the city and now grown up, and I'm like why didn't care about that. That just means that their data's probably like working hard and doing pretty well for himself. Good for him. But that was a thing back in the day. Like, oh, you're dead works in the city. You think you're better than us?.

"Discount the price by six thousand dollars. This happens every day and the seller. Either says, oh, you got me. I wasn't line. I just didn't know because attended lived in the house that I wasn't aware. So either discount a six grand, or I'll send my guy into fixed those things then you have you extend your due diligence period, the point is you gotta see it or somebody from your team has to see it. But it's a good idea to look in other markets. If you're from Orange County, California where you can't generate a yield because the house is the taxes too expensive, it kind of blocks you out from single family. So I think it's a good idea to find another place. Elsewhere. And just get somebody to go in there for you. Yeah. It's like one of those things when you do a Carfax, and it's like, you only do a Carfax, but you're also not going to do one hundred and fifty point inspection on your car, and you're in California, but your cars and say Michigan somewhere you need to do the inspection pay the hundred and fifty dollars or or a buck seventy five. So you say, you know, on quickly you're not buying a lemon, and you're getting this inspection on this car done from a professional the exact same thing with the house inspection out even go as far as getting a survey. Right. Make sure that they're no you're not intruding on anybody's property. These types of things matter, otherwise you will inherit problems, and then you'll have to deal with them accordingly. I just don't understand like how people can buy cars without seeing them or at least paying analogy. The interesting to your allergy is that you don't actually have to test drive them. Okay. That's the thing is that the the idea that you could buy a car if you were going to buy a late model car, and you got inspecting the person said it runs, it drives I test drove it. It looks good. It's got a ding here. It's got needs new tires in the front. Okay. Good. Now. I have the inspection, and I can buy, and if if it gets to me that it's a piece of junk, it doesn't drive I've made a mistake. But you actually, I mean I have bought cars from across the country without doing a test drive. But. But the inspection. That guy did a test drive. And so it was good nothing. Both times it worked out. And that's what you pay professionals. That's exactly why you have them in your life. All right. You avoid mistakes that way right? One hundred percent. All right next question. I think that was that was an awesome question. First of all Andrea. Thank you so much for that second question. I would I would say third question comes from Danny and New York, I live in New York City your old stomping grounds, Greg, and I want to invest within an hour's drive I can tell Greg's New Yorker where let me guess is. It is overall general attitude toward life. In North Carolina. So I don't know what he's talking about. I'm a north Carolinian. Right. Is that what they really call them north Carolinians? Yeah. Man, that's a mouthful where where should I invest? I have a quarter million dollars in cash. Okay. Quarter million dollars in cash, and he wants to stay within an hour of New York. Well, here's the thing about New York is that the taxes are super high same with New Jersey. And so what tends to happen and the prices are high. So it tends to happen. When the prices go up higher and the taxes go up higher the rents don't necessarily keep up. So like in the last question about Davenport about Iowa, I made the reference to the fact that prices are low and the rents aren't as well. I mean in proportion with each other when the prices are low the rent still, stay people get one hundred thousand dollar house. They're still going to rent it for eight hundred you could buy one hundred eighty thousand dollar house in New York suburbs and still be paying seven hundred dollars in rent. And so there is a it doesn't quite keep up. So for that reason, it's not a great place to get a yield. However, if you go further out Connecticut's, an interesting thing because the taxes lowering Connecticut, but you can go to the multifamily space multifamily is really interesting, you know, when you can get in a single. Oh, family home. You get two thousand dollars a month in rent. But if you buy a two family home in the same town, you get fifteen hundred dollars a month for each apartment. Right. So now the same Madison Square footage you're getting three thousand dollars a month rent instead of two thousand dollars a month. That's where almost anywhere. I'm sorry know most any direction outside of New York queens into Long Island, Connecticut, Westchester Rockland county into New Jersey. Staten Island in any of those places you can find two and three family properties. The not quite the same as single family because you're never going to sell them to a homebuyer later on which is one of the advantages as we talk about single family homes, but I would say two and three family houses in in growing neighborhoods neighborhoods that are improving in and around the city would work, really. Well. What do you think about Long Island city now that it's become HD two or three for Amazon? Do you think that we should re kind of redo our strategy to go all in into Long Island city, five seconds. Maybe ten it's definitely going to make a big difference in queens. And so that should have been my first answer to that today. From New.
