Johansen scores in OT to lift Predators past Devils, 4-3

"The Nashville predators start a tough road back to back on the right foot, scoring 11 seconds in there Thursday night matchup the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential center. They bookend the start with another goal at the end of the first period, but the Devils would take the lead with three unanswered goals than the predators found another opportunity to strike in the final seconds of regulation when McCall Greenland poked in a rebound force over time. May have made a really good play in a neutral zone and I got the puck in and then it's just, you know, getting that one shot to the net and hopefully we can create something. Ryan johansen scored the second .33 seconds in overtime as the predators win four to three. Matt mankiewicz Newark

"Are going to be very interesting to watch because the equality opponents on all these jokes aside. And so I think against those three teams will be able to really kind of sync our teeth into that and then next Monday talk about what we saw from them. Get a really close look at what have is lend home has been able to do this year too from all I'm seeing out of Boston. I haven't really sat down. I haven't watched a full bruins game beginning to end yet, but from it's a good place to start going Pittsburgh. New York, Toronto. Yeah, I want to, you know what? We should do like a patriots bears around deep dive too. Okay. Because every time every time I look at his now marines, it's just you can't really compare it to any other any other mere mortal in the league at this moment. And he didn't even have his top line mate for the first 7 of those games or whatever. It's ridiculous. So I think that would be a good topic for next week. Here's one thing I want to do. Thursday night, Carolina, and Tampa Bay are playing. I want to sear our listeners away from that game. Yeah. Tampa Bay have been pretty bleak to start the year. They've been incredibly Ho hum. They're going to there in coast mode. They're just going to go through the ads. I mean, I guess you could say it's out too, right? Yeah. But the land is going to choose to resolve for a bit there. All I'm saying is that that is that that's going to be heralded as this big matchup between two good Eastern Conference teams. I think that that is, I think that going on at the same time as that game is Vegas and Ottawa. I think that that would be my Thursday night pick looking at that schedule for the eastern games. Yeah, I think that's fair. I mean, I would probably steer our listeners away from any game involved in the Carolina hurricane. If you actually want to enjoy the product you're watching. Yeah, I mean Thursdays jam packed. I honestly would say New Jersey Edmonton is going to be really fair. There's some good games on Thursday. Yeah, Thursday's gonna rock. Friday, they're playing games in Finland. Yep, while playing a game in Finland, we got the morning games. Yeah, and then, okay, let's give the listeners a Saturday watch then. Yeah. Jose Boston and Toronto because they can keep up with us. I mean, yeah, New Jersey Calgary.

"Offensively, I want to make the point, you know, you're seeing he's finally started to put up a few points, I think we both agree in terms of the points for defense, but I don't really care that much. It means much more to me if your team is scoring while you're on the ice because it probably means you're doing something to help that. What I like about merino is, and this might frustrate people if they're looking for the wrong things, is he's not very trigger happy. Like when he gets the puck at the point, he's not looking at just load up and hammer it as hard as he can towards the net. He'd much rather defer. And that can be frustrating if you feel like it's passing up opportunities, but I think we both agree that I prefer when my defenseman waits for something better to open. No defenseman should be taking slap shots at even strength. Unless they have like a clear path towards a net where they're all of a sudden kind of going downhill and getting closer. In terms of just standing at the blue line and taking a point shot. Yeah. I guess, yeah, context doesn't matter, but yeah, I think it's a general rule. No, of course. And it certainly shouldn't be like something you're trying to set up every time. Because how frustrating is it seeing Jack Hughes dancing around the offensive zone, beating his initial defender, drawing the attention passing it off and then all of a sudden it's like this shot that has kitchens going in. Check it out beyond the arc for three. Oh God, yeah. And so what I like Moreno, you saw against the red wings there in their most recent game against them where he gets to the point and instead of just firing it aimlessly, he brings it down the wall waits for Dawson Mercer to get into a one time position on the slot, gets it over to him and it's a much better opportunity. He winds up converting on it. And it's funny that they paired him up with grades because graves is literally the antithesis of that. He has never seen a shot that he does not love to hammer as hard as he can. And it worked against the blue jackets

"The teams I can do that against a team like the avalanche. So it becomes about frustrating McKinnon. It becomes about making sure you can't get passes across. Just handling him physically. You don't have to, you don't have to lay in a big hit. You don't have to rush the pockets. And you don't have to lock McKinnon into his own zone. You just have to make, you just have to make those zone entries that McKinnon has a little bit more difficult. You have to ensure that when McKinnon comes over the line when he has touches the puck in the offensive zone, he doesn't have that obvious passing later shooting claim. You close on him quickly. You know, Marino's a guy that can do that. And the other thing I really like about Marino and what you were showing me of him was when he puts a stick down on the ice to protect against the pass, he gets the knob of his stick all the way down. And that doesn't seem like a really big thing to note, but the number of passes that are going to get under his stick. just the way that he just he's done it. It's almost minimal. That's great. Yeah, I really appreciate the way he's able to angle other team's best players, right? Like you see his positioning in terms of a play against me go rent an end where we granted and it's very big and like he has the physical advantage against John Reno, but Marino is able to basically get the inside track against him, protect the puck and then eventually kind of defuse the pressure and get it to his defensive partner, get it out of the zone. So he's able to sort of utilize leverage in a way where he doesn't need to be as strong because he's always on the right side of the defender in the pocket in terms of basically being between them and the net. And so he's able to sort of utilize that inside leverage that inside positioning to win all of these battles.

"No, no, no, I agree, but I think that where the team was last year is that something had to change to turn this from being a rush based purely a rush based attack into, okay, how do we look more like a good hockey team as opposed to look as dangerous as we can offensively. And I think that they were able to, they were able to do that without giving up any of their major trade pieces, which is a fantastic, a fantastic credit to their management staff. And their coaching staff. Well, and if you look at it, not to look too far out ahead, but they have a lot of financial commitments. Coming off their books this year, some of the players they might try to extend and retain. But there's a lot of resources they'll be able to reallocate probably more wisely than they had in the past. They've got like 3.9 million attached to Andreas johnsson's coming out the books 4.5 to Thomas tatar. So on and so forth. They're going to have both the draft capital, the prospect pool, the current team, in terms of young players, and also financial flexibility to basically craft this team any way they want to be able to pick up next year's all over dark strand basically. Pretty much, yeah. And that's a great position to be in because they do have that core in place now, right? Like you're not, it might be a bit trickier to go out and find a player that's going to be one of those core members, especially in a discount price, but they don't need that. Exactly. I'll be broke Shannon would be perfect. And the extra money that they're going to spend on brat, that they wouldn't have otherwise if they had been able to go along on them. They're saving by they went early on Hughes, and they probably signed used to that deal before. I think it was well known that he would break out in the way he did. And that deal I remember being fairly criticized at the time. No, maybe not fairly. I thought it was a good I thought it was a great signing by the Devils when it was made. Yeah, he just hadn't necessarily had broken out in the point total category. But in terms of how he was looking and the trajectory he was on, yeah. Yeah. Is everything was there except for the scoring. And, you know, the score takes care of itself to quote. Yeah, I mean, they've got him in his ear at what 15.25 combined. I know you're the one looking at the numbers. I am 8 and 7.25 for pretty much the entirety of their respective prime ears. Most of their 20s. I'll take that. Yeah, that's a pretty good starting point. Is there anything else on brat or Hughes here? Do you want to get through? There's so many other pieces here for the Devils that we're going to discuss. We've got, we've got time, but before we go to break here, is there anything you don't want a quick image? Don't I think that we've covered hues and brat pretty well here? Yeah, yeah. Well, you know what they deserve it. I feel like we could probably do a full show on those of you guys, but there's so many other pieces that we're going to get to here. So all right, cam, we're going to take a break here. And then when we come back, we're going to keep talking about the New Jersey Devils and all

"It's my good pal camera on camera. What's going on? Having a great day. There we are. Well, we had to start the week. I took Thursday and Friday off was feeling a bit under the weather feeling much better now. And I feel like this is the perfect way to start the week. And the perfect way to start the week is you got to wake up early this morning. And you watched a lot of New Jersey deputy. Jersey Devils games back to back to back. I did. I watched all four games that play this past week, so let's kind of rehash our weekly plan here for people that maybe didn't tune in last Monday, although I can't imagine. Why they wouldn't have after a rollicking buffalo saber is deep dive. So people really seem to enjoy it. So we're going to make this a regular thing. Every Monday, we're going to pick a team. And we're going to quote unquote adopt them. And by that, we're just going to watch rewatch the most recent games they've played in deep dive and talk about everything going on with the team what we're seeing, what the numbers are saying about them, kind of look ahead as well for their future outlook. We told listeners that we were going to do the Washington capitals today. Yeah. Unfortunately, we have decided to put that on the back burner and focus on the New Jersey Devils. Instead, because they're the talk of the league right now. Your red hot New Jersey Devils. That's right. I mean, look, right now in studio, I'm wearing an infernal access. Sweater brought to you by my pal, Todd cordell and his website, covering the New Jersey Devils, so we're all in on the Devils right now. And so we're going to discuss them. So they have a 6 and three record. But that's misleading because they've actually won 6 of their past 7. How's that misleading? Well, you see 6 and three are like, okay, that's pretty good. But they started, they lost their first two games. And you might remember, as I mentioned on a previous PDO app, PDO cast episode, they were chanting fire in your fire Lindy ruff after in game two against the Detroit red ones at home. Game three, they started off. I believe down to nothing. To our Anaheim ducks. And I was like, okay, this could go really poorly at home. And then they bounced back. They won that game. They rattled off a number of fairly impressive victories. Now, we should say, it's been a pretty favorable schedule to start, 6 of those 9 games have been at home. They've played the flyers, the red wings twice, the ducks, the blue jackets, the sharks, the islanders. Lost to the capitals. The avalanche were kind of banged up right now in a pretty competitive, one nothing game I believe in. So we mentioned that favorable schedule. Now here's my pushback that because I know that's going to be like a natural thing to point out and you have to provide the context. What I want to say to that is

"Yeah. You know, now if it doesn't work, the player just goes back anyway. Yeah. So there's, you know, I like that tact because it really is not costing them much, nothing. All right, final one from Matthew on Twitter. Ray, you played with wooden sticks, aluminum sticks, the two piece with the wooden blades, one piece sticks. He goes, what is your favorite stick combo? I never played with the one piece. That was just after me. When I used them now, I don't particularly like them because I find them too firm. The blade themselves, which of course allows you to shoot it better. But that wasn't really my game. I like the aluminum graphite shaft and the wooden blade. I like the feel of the wooden blade. But that's what I grew up with, right? Yeah. And I will tell you this the last 15 never so games I played in my career. I was at a shaft and I knew I was retiring at the end of the year. I mean, St. Louis. And I used a pretty whip shaft. And so the trainer in St. Louis says to me, we got a bunch of Holly's old shafts here, do you want to try them? Like they were 75 flex. Yeah. Because that's what Holly used, right? This licorice weapon. So I'm like, yeah, I'll try it. So I liked it, right? It was kind of close to what I used. So I had my blades. I put them in Holly's shaft, and that's what I used for the rest of my career. You know, like I said, 15 or 20 games, whatever it was. So my last regular season game were playing in Detroit. It's an afternoon game. And early in the game, I think Dominic hasn't woken up yet. He's still taking a nap. And the puck comes around the sideboards. I get it on the left wing. And I shoot it at the net, somehow it goes in. As I said, the great hashtag has taken a nap. Yeah. And it goes in. So we go back to center ice. I'm lined up and holy lined up beside me. And he looks down and he sees my stick. And he obviously recognizes it's his. He said, did you score that goal? He was going to that goal with my stick, and I'm like, yeah, it's your shaft. He goes, what a goddamn embarrassment. And I just started to hollow because he would never have shot a puck that poorly. That's the stick I finished with. That's daddy. Another guest we have to have on the ranger. There's an endless amount of stories with Hollywood. We do have to find him. Thanks to everybody for checking in on Oscar and Drake's anything..

"In a playoff race and maybe the question has been someone answered with John klingberg recently coming out and basically announcing his disappointment for not having a contract extension in hand by now. So well, yeah, I mean, I'm just queuing up the standings here. And so there are 8 points out of third in the central out of four rather in the central behind Minnesota. And if you go to four teams on the other side, they're just 5 points behind LA and Thanos a, like they're not they're not selling yet. As for John klingberg, I mean, every contract impasse isn't because they don't like a player or the player doesn't like the team. Hey, we're stuck here. You know, this is the money we've got. Yeah. So when you say sell off, of course, everybody looks at Jamie Ben. And Tyler Sagan, we've got to have somebody on the other side that says, yeah, I'll take lots of that salary for you. And so it's not as easy, I would think. There are times when I go, man, you know, Dallas is pretty good. And then other times they just aren't. It would seem odd that they would get to a point where kleinberg leaves for free. So if it's a boat klingberg, I mean, they got the trade deadline. I don't know, has that moved yet, drakes are no, no, that don't move 21st. No. Yeah. So, you know, I mean, you get into start a march and if they decide they can't get them signed, I'm sure. There's going to be a list of teams that would say, yeah, you know what? I'd be interested in John kleinberg. All right, two more for you, right. From Gibson on Instagram. And I'm going to adapt his question a little bit because Gibson is asking do the leaf find a way to sign Jack camel. And I believe the answer is, yes, I don't see what 100%. "All right, Jack Hughes of the New Jersey Devils on joining us on The Rain Drake's podcast. And Jack, we just talked about this off air, but it feels like you've been doing a lot of media, including an unbelievable feature of Emily Kaplan and ESPN. There was a lot of information for us to digest in that feature and speaking of digesting how have you been chirped? If you've been chirped at all for some of the content of that interview, looking for broccoli recipes, any of that sort of thing? I mean, no, obviously that was, I think I haven't even watched it, actually. I was there the whole time, so I kind of know what's going on, but yeah, I heard it went really well and you know, I don't know if that's happened in hockey a lot, you know, like features like that, so I thought that was pretty cool to be one of the first guys to get that opportunity and obviously with ESPN and they like my personality and obviously my game is picking up. So it's a good opportunity and it was a fun day. So I think it went really well. You know, Jack you know, you play and you have such great flair to your game and we thought with Trevor's egress earlier and there seems to be out of that development program in the U.S.. Like I just see like there's so much character out of that and flair and creativity. Does this part of that come from how they coach you there or as part of it just the way you guys are? I don't know, you know, I would say, especially our team, like we just had a bunch of beauties on our team, just good guys. Guys you like hanging around. You know, we loved being at the rink in terms of the on ice and the creativity what you're talking about. On the ice for two hours practice and then probably 45, 30 minutes after practice too. So that was a team that loved playing hockey. And you know, obviously, it's some special players and guys with a lot of passion and a lot of different personalities, you know? So it was a really fun team and it wasn't a cocky team, but it was for sure a really confident and fun team stuff. I think that translate and carried over that man, that's got to be way more fun than to just grind through a boring practice again to have guys that haven't fun while you're doing it, right? Oh, yeah, I'll tell you that. At the program, it was all that competition based. You know, it was all games, always blue versus red one one team loses one team wins, you know? So there's less Latino playing every other day, you know? You can't do that competitiveness on a daily basis, but at the program, it was just extremely fun practicing because we're getting better, we're enjoying and you're laughing out there and smiling the whole time. You know, that's the culture. I think we want to create New Jersey where we all come to the rank and enjoy it and love it and obviously it's along season with ups and downs, but we gotta enjoy practice and enjoy the game. Seeing a bunch of videos from you guys you and your brothers when you're young and your tooling around out on the ice or your fiddling around in a basement playing play in the hockey or whatever. Was it kind of the same there? Were you guys always competing against each other? In the.

"Not now with the Bobby ore. Yeah. Right? When you watch Bobby or do what he was doing back in the day against his opponents, makar does the same thing. I laughed watching the goal against Nashville, because all I could think about would be the Nashville coaching staff going through the video saying, yeah, that forwards just got to stay in front of them. He was trying. His agility on the blue line, it's like he's on a tightrope. Yeah. And he opens up his hips. He gets on his edges, but he seems to go faster. Now he's around that guy. That guy's in the dust. And he comes in and he sticks a goal scorer's goal over a vesna trophy candidate in UC Farrell. Yeah. Like, the goal he scored in Chicago when he, you know, he left Kirby Doc. We're dead. And then went around him. Like, it's amazing. Another two points last night he's got 16 goals on the season. Yeah. 16 goals. Are you kidding me? I mean, he's McDavid like, right? And I know that comparison has been made, but from a comparing a defenseman to a forward isn't easy to do, but based on that, just explosion of speed. Again, the edge work, all of that. He might be the closest player to McDavid in that regard from the blue line in. While McDavid does things other people can't do. And so does kale makar. And there's not very many people in the game that can say that. No. Let's stick with Colorado for a moment. Top story with bull byram, right? And I know you've crossed paths with this guy. You know, you think of what he's going to do potentially in the National Hockey League. And the sky might be the limit, but he has to get healthy. He's got a history of concussions. And disturbing the news on Tuesday coming out that he's taking a personal leave because he's not feeling well. So the lingering effects are there. And man, it just feels like this young man needs time. He needs time. He needs treatment. He just needs to do anything other than playing games. I would refer him to Sidney Crosby. Yeah. And say, do you remember the time or he might have been too young because I don't even remember how many years ago it was? When Sid was gone for a year. Right? Like he wasn't right. Yeah. Bowl by rooms had three concussions in the last calendar year. And you have to be concerned yes for his unlimited hockey potential, but for him for him as a young man. And what difference does it make if he plays in January or February or.

"This is season three we're in episode 16 ray of The Rain Drake hockey podcast. Episode 16 of season three. I mean, I don't know miracle. It really is. The fact that we got the season two was miraculous. Now that we're cruising through season three, I mean, we're not careful. There's going to be a season four. And then easy, don't jump the gun here. Don't jump again. We've got Jack Hughes and the New Jersey Devils, little fun story, his family is with Quinn and Jack and Luke and Ellen and Jimmy. We've crossed past so many different ways. I know your family has so is mine with the Hughes family. So looking forward to catching up with Jack you'll join us today on the podcast. So we're recording episode 16 rape on Wednesday. And we were all part of the Toronto Maple Leafs Vegas golden knights broadcast on TSN on Tuesday night. You and Gordon Miller were calling the game from studio in Vancouver. We're obviously in Toronto, the game is being played in Vegas. Just a classic example of how bizarre the world is the world of the National Hockey League. Now, you and I before that game talked a little bit about this. It's a challenge, isn't it? To get a feel for not what's going on in a game. I mean, you're watching you're seeing your analyzing, but just to generally get a feel for where we're at in the regular season schedule. It's hard to get a grasp of it. I don't even think it's a league right now. It's just like a bunch of games that are randomly scheduled around the place. And you look down any app that you have to get the scores for a particular day. And at the bottom are four postponements. And then 5 tomorrow and then three the day after. And it's like, there's no fault in it. You know, I mean, like, what are you going.

"With the New Jersey Devils president Jake Reynolds I wasn't kidding about talking about Christmas shopping because one of the things that's important is the merchandise that the devil's cell The merch The merch the merch And it's a new day it's a modern era It's way more than just well I got to go down to the arena and get merchandise You guys have modernized it And I want to buy some presents myself Can you tell me more about that Absolutely So coming off of obviously our third Jersey launch one of the elements that was important to us was how do we bring that to life outside of just the Jersey So being able to have a customized merchandise line that had that monochromatic look was something we were excited to be able to bring to our fan base And then even beyond that for us we had a little bit of fun about New Jersey having new jerseys that saved Jersey on them So there was certainly some fun in terms of what we were able to do with some merchandise lines So a friend of ours Greg with Shinsuke ESPN had sent a note of hey I want to hack that says hat And so we created a mock up of what a hat would look like in the response was so fantastic on social We said okay we have to produce these And so we went out and we produced initially it was 500 hats that said hat in the same script with the red drop shaft that our Jersey had And the proceeds of this were all going to the devil's new foundation And within 20 minutes all 500 half sold out So then we went for another run and produced another thousand hats and within 30 minutes those sold out immediately So I give our marketing and brand team a tremendous amount of credit to just in terms of being able to have some fun with this being nimble and being able to pivot on the fly But to be able to be able to create something like that and obviously have it go to sport an incredible cause like the devil's use foundation was a pretty amazing opportunity and fun to kind of watch that all come to fruition Okay Barr's already doing a Google search right now for that Because he needs to he needs to get on the waiting list Jake can you explain the relationship between the New Jersey Devils hockey club and Prudential Financial I know you play in the Prudential arena but they are also playing a role here in providing services like consultation and financial advice to businesses that you will be featuring on player helmets They are and Prudential has been an incredible partner of ours for quite some time Obviously their name is on the building center They are a mainstay here in Newark And as we were going through obviously the pandemic we had and started what we called our by black program which was an opportunity for us to be able to drive kind of awareness and increased exposure to black owned businesses And this was an important initiative for our organization And we're fortunate that Prudential has very similar values They view the world through a very similar lens and want to drive that same change And so as we were talking about how can we go out and make a difference this by black program that was something that was incredibly important to us So we had two local black owned businesses last year that we were able to onboard and bring into our organization And give them the assets the expertise and the exposure that all of our other partners received So we had paper company and flow tasty treats which were two local Newark based businesses that we were able to onboard and give them the same amount of assets that a Prudential would have or an R W J or a BMW some of our other partners And so to be able to see that impact on their business was something that we were incredibly proud of And then Prudential just being who they are and having the level of engagement that they do they wanted to be able to take that to the next level And so they stepped up in a major way this past year And took on the sponsorship of the buyback program Before we let you go big television package last spring with ESPN and Turner sports tell me what the type of infusion it has for revenue exposure marketing and growth Yes I mean as you well know I mean like ESPN has such an incredible platform and such an incredible reach And tell people that ESPN can make stars And I can't think of a better example of that than our very first game this year when Jack Hughes obviously we were talking earlier about the star power of that game Jack Hughes with the I don't know that I've ever received more text messages or emails from friends and family than I did that night And I talk about just the power and the reach of the ESPN effect And that is one of those elements where he was on every sports center highlight every top ten and that put him on the map as an emerging star And that is the power of ESPN And so I think the opportunity that hockey has and where it is at in its growth stage to be able to bring that within the ESPN and the Turner families is just going to accelerate this And it's going to be able to draw in the casual fan that may not have watched hockey every night or may not turn on a hockey game But this is going to drive that interest to okay watch your game And then all of a sudden they're coming out to a game Then they're buying a partial and then next thing you know their season ticket holders So I think the impact of this obviously financially it was a very lucrative deal and a great opportunity But more importantly than that is just the power and the reach that it has for the sport of hockey and for the players and the star power that this is going to be able to continue to drive Jake Reynolds the president of the New Jersey Devils thank you so much sir for joining us I hope you had a good time with us It was fantastic Michael Mike Scarlett really appreciate it It was great to spend some time and look forward to hopefully seeing you at the devil's game soon Thanks Jake That was Jake Reynolds New Jersey Devils president What a neat fine and what a neat get for our show He had a lot to talk about Scarlett including a lot about Prudential Yeah I love how the club is so tied in to the state of New Jersey and the identity And it identifies with so many businesses that are based in New Jersey Again I go back to the idea that if you go see a devil's game in the Prudential center you'll see all these local businesses represented Company names are emblazoned everywhere around the arena It really shows how deeply connected the team is to the local community the local businesses Lynchy mister Boston which scared me because he had you convinced mister Reynolds you know what I might trade in the golden black uniforms and maybe just maybe you might be sniffing the New Jersey Devils Well I think one thing I'd never thought about this he brought up a good point where the only team with New Jersey in our name that plays in New Jersey Yeah Now the jets and the Giants play in New Jersey but they are the New York Jets in the New York Giants They New Jersey nets used to play there but now they play in Brooklyn and Donald Trump once owned the USFL's New Jersey generals What's it called the New Jersey generals back then So now the Devils are the only team with New Jersey in their name and as we heard from Jacob that the they have a third Jersey Oh I love that They just debuted but designed by the great goal tenant Martin Brodeur and it just says Jersey across the top There was one thing that he did say and I was really impressed about how they're trying to help minority owned businesses And the way they're doing.

"He's like get out. I'm like okeydoke. So so i back my office. My phone rings and it was the dreaded eighty three hundred extension. which was david. Stern's pick up the phone already with cold sweat on my brow. Knowing that i was going to get the thrashing. He's like does it goes i. I don't know you would let me in. He's like why not isaac well put-on get back there. It's like awesome like toggle between two titans as a young aspiring executive. So two weeks later invites me back are. I begged my way back over. You wanna you wanna remember the story. And so i go back in saint in a comfortable chair pacing rounds office. I finally get lead in any sitting behind his desk. Throws a book at me and says. Don't come back until you read this. I catch the book. I looked out in. Its a vince lombardi. I was like i. I have to go read this now like out a like in the car. I go back to new york same. Eighteen hundred calls same routines like a read. The book you know anyway. So it's funny like i. I went back and third time. And this i asked to take. Take now commissioner adam. Silver and burning. My longtime boss could both amazing friends of mine. Now and i'm in the car. And i'm a low totem pole. I'm thirty years old. And so i had written notes written up notes as. Here's what i think we should say like because i said to stern on like i don't think you send me back there by myself. Like i don't think he cares about me. i don't think he. I don't think it's any respect to say. And so he's like you know. I can ask him. He's like well whatever. I can deal with toll thing so. I grabbed my boston. Adam where the car over there. And so i prepared these notes you know for these guys like three pages of notes. Here's what i would say. Here's why would lead the questions out. Ask teed up. Because that's what i did for the nba off consultant for the team. So i would go in particular when new people took over the teams. I would go in and kind of run them through a you know. Here's a don't list effectively and here's a to do list. And here's an evaluation of your organization. And here's some recommendations etc so we're in the car and i was like okay. You guys have this right got it. So we sit down. Lou says you know bernie and they had known other back from the providence days and brings like adam adam scott. I'm like you guys got kidney. So here i am about to get slaughtered. So i go into my pitch because i know the organization very used to work there. Then that's a start as a marketing assistant so new new. The players knew the organization. So i go into my life hardcore. Here's where i've found. Here's what i think we need to do. But i went through and he was putting me to. I mean keep. He put me on the hot seat and i was going to hold on my own doing my thing so i went down to hear the ten things i would change. Tomorrow i did a whole solo thick and so he's like are you done now. I was like yes i am. You know figuring. I was gonna get thrown out for the third time. Why not tons of charm and he goes and he opens his board. Had this big like covered forty opens it up everything that i walk in through. He had written down the board walk dinner. So that that's Is a good lesson on so many fronts. One is never underestimate the great lula morello in business in hockey as a friend. He's one of the one of the great human beings in the sport of hockey. And i've cherished my friendship with him and and hope to have a statue of him outside the prudential center at some point He's that good i mean. He's the vince lombardi of hockey. He's he's the great of the great human being and as hockey executive and so that's one two we ever you go into his office. You better put a tie on you. Better have read something from vince. Lombardi and you better be prepared. But he funny twenty one of my one of my all time favorite people. I got two more quick ones for you. Number one. how. Many madison square garden executives can adam graves pinned against the boards at the same time. So i i listen. I am a basketball junkie. Okay i think hockey is the greatest live sport in the history of the world. But i grew up skating a little bit of hockey on chadwick lake in newburgh new york but no skill at all none. Okay good hands. They say but but moves like a a sloth on the ice if you could imagine a sloth and skates so the first thing i did when i got the amnesty was like hey when we played hoop. We don't play. This is madison square garden. And what we do now so for the first six months i was getting my regular bre in on the court next on your kid so on the court. Madison square garden wisconsin dream. And why didn't have any legs even then my mouth. I'm a world class shit talker world class and so the hockey guy started. Give me a hard time. Oh you're guys not. I love hockey. And they're like can we play on the ice outside. Yeah and so if there were a fifth line. I don't think i would have been on advocating for the games but we did have rhonda gay played added gravy played. I mean it was kind of unbelievable and a lot of guys played with. Were college hockey player. So and i'm not but we had like there was a group of us that couldn't play and play. Now i'd be on that group and adam graves like ever hit anybody. Not he's like take me and i literally. I stayed as fast. I can't which is slow and try to put him into the board. And i bounced off like a like a super bowl like memory. Were katya super bowl. That was me. An angry is the nicest in the history of the world. I don't know if you know. Maybe it all but literally i mean he eats all. You cannot believe me i meet. You can't believe that someone can be that authentic in that wonderful net night on the not so much so i bounced him off him like a super bowl and and i was my mouth the whole time. Which wasn't a great idea. And then at one point the puck into the corner of course would be twenty minutes skate over there. And i felt pressure on my body. Like i've never felt before. And i felt like i was pinned to the glass. Almost like a bad sitcom where your face is like against the glass and it felt like an hour. It was probably a minute but it was way too long so he had me and two other guys pinned and immobilized for way too long but not not a fun night. that's for sure. And here's my last one. If chris jury was kidnapped and replaced by you would anybody be able to tell the difference through our cat in. When i was at the rangers people that have been with been around kind of big market big revenue teams at small market Lower revenue teams have. So it's of fun to think back. Those meme reason and chris was drew as a elite elite leader and a wonderful human being. When i was at games. I would either be asked if i was chris jury or if i was brother i mean it was. It was almost painful. Like i took it as a great compliment. Scott both professionally. And if you're comfortable personally what makes you nervous. What makes me any kind of technology. Uncertainty logging onto this podcast. I hadn't used his platform before cold sweat getting in the car. I'm an awful driver. I'm not as bad as my daughters by the way. I don't know if you know this but my daughters are such bad drivers that the insurance company called and said we're not willing to carry you anymore. Oh wow and i said there has to be some price we can pay and they said not with us so yeah three. Crashes and several tickets later the not destroy their lovely ladies but not their strong point. But when i'm driving. I get anxious if i'm going but but not too much else and the final one if commissioner gary bettman called you this afternoon and said scott. We're giving you the ability to change one thing in hockey. What would it be. And you can't answer by gary. I'm the commissioner. Actually you could. That would be even funnier..

"Sierra four elliott today our special guest is the ceo of the new jersey. Devils also Ceo the philadelphia. Seventy sixers of the nba. Scott o'neill Real interesting guy. Real interesting background. Think you're going to enjoy this conversation. should also point out. He is the author of a new book called. Beware your feet are Seven principles that keep you present grounded and thriving from your perch before we get into the peace year. What do think people should know about. Scott o'neill he's got a really interesting background. He's been at madison square garden. He's now as you mentioned with the devils and sixers one of the things we talk about is the process what they went through on both in on-court and business perspective from the seventy sixers when they basically scorched the earth and that is a hotly debated thing you know. I love in the interview. The stuff about lula morale. I think i think people in in our sport are fascinated by lula morello and what he's like and the stories he tells are pretty hilarious. The thing that i think about this interview. I like is it. It really veered into different topics. Jeff some very serious and some very light soul. I think in this one. There's going to be something for everyone. The one that i was curious about with his work with the devils. And we saw this with the seventy sixers. He goes into it in some depth here. We've seen teams just for the sake of this podcast. Considering its hockey will focus on hockey. We've seen some teams start to come together on the ice but the organization around the team sort of isn't ready for success and the organization scrambles and it costs the team on the ice elliott. We've seen this countless times. We don't talk about it a lot but it does happen. And it happens with some frequency with the philadelphia. Seventy sixers. you know. This group had a depress team a team. That couldn't win but in that moment and around that time what they went about is sort of what they're going about in new jersey right now creating an environment around the team so when that team is ready to be great the organization around the team is great as well so there isn't any conflict or friction or they'll be nothing that the organization does that affect negatively. What happens on the ice. I agree with that entirely when you're in in his position. You know everything that happens reflects on you whether it's your fault or not It reflects on you because your the face. It's funny when. I say this a lot but know what you're signing up for. I tell it especially to young journalism. Students are are young reporters. Know what you signed up for. There are great rewards but there are also great risks and one of the things out. There is that when you go into this business. You put yourself out there publicly jeff. Every mistake you. And i make everyone sees it. Oh yeah scott. O'neil you get the great tidal you get all the perks and benefits that go with it but that also means that everything reflects on you and i think the best understand and it's clear like there's a point in the interview where he disagrees with one of my and he says to me you should get your facts straight and the the the reaction i take from that is this is a person who has incredible pride in the job that they do and the company that they work with and i think that's the way it should be. You should be willing to say. Hey i defend what we're thinking. And i defend our process and what. I think the best leaders do that. They admit mistakes whenever they happen. I loved his book. Talks about failure and how to handle it. I think being a leader is to things accepting mistakes and blame for them. But to having pride in where you work for and wanting to be the best. And i think in this interview it shows both of those sides of you agree or disagree.

"Julio jones trade just happened yesterday in recording on monday happened sunday. sixth of june. Before we get to scott o'neill in a minute. This was obviously going to happen. And there's some talk out there that julio jones got his way and got out listen. The only reason he got is the team wanting to get them out They were in such cap. Hell the falcons to put themselves in a cap jail at. They desperately need to get out and couldn't get out until now so they lost market value but not being able to trade him before june one because now they can offload some cap charges into twenty twenty two. But i've said this before. It was a massive contractual stake not of the order of magnitude like carson wentz or jared goff deal but for positions outside a quarterback. This is right up there. They did a massive extension to nineteen in the extension. Years are or starting in twenty twenty one so they made a big mistake. And ideally julio jones got out he got out because they warn them out because they got themselves in such trouble to get out. They couldn't get a first round pick. We knew that was going to wasn't going to happen for them. They got a second round. Pick the best can do It just stuns me all the time that they got the same compensation for jones that they got for muhammad son new so think about that. So that's my rant about julio jones. He's in a better place. Obviously because the titans only pick up his salary than to deal with all the cap be asked that. Now the falcons do and fell to pass. Some huge charges for guy is no longer there as iran about julio jones and now we get to our special guests the ceo of the philadelphia seventy sixers in new jersey devils sports business..

How the Rockies Became the Hottest Mess in Baseball

"The rockies are playing like a team that just lost its best player as we record this. They have the worst record in baseball as bad as their record. Or is that number even a little bit deceptive the rockies are losing an very old timey kind of way. they're the old fashioned kind of bad team. They are like the new jersey devils of the nineteen eighties or the la clippers of the nineties. Or there like the cleveland browns of this century. They are not trying to lose. They're losing despite themselves. It's not the sort of cynical cost cutting that leads to teams losing now. They're the old kind of bad teams where they sort of bad building the baseball team and and it's starting to catch up to them in a way. I find this to be almost comforting. That it's still possible to have so many things. Just go wrong that you end up being the worst team in baseball so pure pure. That's good we're for is very pure. It's it's very clear that these owners has no one's learning lessons here. They are just sort of plowing ahead. Will rockies ever win with these people in charge. It's a really good question. Let me argue for them. I okay this is a team that made the playoffs twice in a row despite some serious disadvantages the rockies. Play at the least predictable ballpark. In all of baseball coors field is very difficult to tame is tougher pitchers but they seemed to have solved that problem. They developed a pitching rotation. That was the best in their history and they pitched their way to back to back playoff appearances on the flip side however they turned a playoff team in to one of the worst teams baseball in less than a year. They have made soling mistakes even within the last five years. It's very difficult to see them. Being the people who eventually turned this team around

Get to Know Lindsey Vonn

"Heard last week's episode cows good time to go back and check it out. We collect, introduce yourself I am when's Yvonne? I won the Olympics in downhill skiing I'm from Minnesota and I am currently engaged to peek a SU- ban of the New Jersey devils and have three dogs slap makes you a rebel girl I mean I'm a rebel girl because I've always followed my dreams and a really high goals for myself and I think that's what being a rebel really means you know striving for greatness and being the best that you can be. Simone had to make some hard decisions in order to proceed gymnastics. What were some hard decisions you had to make on your way to becoming an Olympic skier I? Think every athlete honestly has to make hard decisions especially if you WANNA be in Olympia and I'm the oldest of five kids and my parents had to decide. To our entire family to Colorado from Minnesota and so that was a huge sacrifice for my whole family But we all did it together and I wouldn't have made it without their support, but it was definitely a a really difficult time for all of us. Tell us about the work you're doing with the lose Yvonne Foundation well. I'm really proud of what I'm doing with Lindsey. Vonn Foundation and I actually started it when I had my second ACL surgery and so a little complicated but ACL is like your main ligament that crosses through kind of the middle of your knee, and that really is the stabilizing ligament for your whole leg and. Very critical, obviously for skiing. So it was a very long recovery and. The second ACL surgery I had in two years. So needless to say, I had a lot of time on my hands and that was a positive of that injury was being able to start my foundation. In your knee tube series career day you interview notable women and fell female athletes what inspired you to start the series. So career actually started because I was trying to think of ways to keep kids motivated during the coronavirus lockdown. Was Not being able to go to school and doing some online stuff and. A lot of kids that were involved in sports had a really hard time. You know they couldn't practice with their teams or coaches all the gyms were shut down. So I just wanted to have them connect with their heroes are idols, and you know kind of keep their minds focused on the future and not what's currently going on. So you know kind of connected some of my scholarship winners with heroes in in their particular field know Caroline Wozniacki, Misty Copeland Ballerina. have an astronaut that's coming on I just have some incredible people and their these kids that have these scholarships are able to talk directly to their heroes and. That's something that really is profound to me because when I met my idol peekaboo street when I was nine at an autograph signing that was really the reason why I wanted to become an Olympian. So I hope that this interaction with these people allows them to really stay motivated and focused and know that the dream is actually achievable. Gown is a big part of skiing and gymnastics. How do you get back up? I think falling is a part of life you know. Maybe gymnastics and skiing, and it's a little bit more physical but I think we all have obstacles in our lives and You know the the the fall or the obstacles really the important part. The important part is knowing that you can pick yourself back up and keep going and learn from your mistake. Mistakes aren't bad unless you don't learn from them. So I always look it falls as opportunities to learn opportunities to get better. And we're inherently in our entire lives always gonNA fall, but we have to have the strength to pick ourselves backup. Many of our young fans help to pursue their sport professionally. Do you have any advice for young girls who dream of Competing in the Big Leagues? You know the biggest piece of advice I can give you is. Always dream big and work as hard as you can always give one hundred and ten percent. You know if you always give your best, you're always going to get the best outcome and no matter. If that's winning Olympic gold medal or competing on your high school team or making it to college or getting scholarship you know everyone has their own. Best you know, and you just have to work
