A highlight from LGM Podcast: AFC Preview
"You know, Herbert has to go out there and he has to win a division or, you know, win a playoff game, right? You know, that's, we are firmly, he's in the fourth year, he needs to go out there, this team needs to win a playoff game this year, they're certainly capable of doing it, but if he doesn't win a playoff game this year, it's starting to become a little bit of a disappointment. This is the Lawyer's Guns and Money Podcast. Hello and welcome to the Lawyer's Guns and Money Podcast, and welcome to our annual NFL preview with Scott Lemieux and Rob Farley. Gentlemen, hello. It is finally time for the NFL to return, and thus the world is right again. Finally, Sunday has a point. God lives, finally. Not three days he's dead, it's like seven months. So, let's, we might as well just jump into this, you know, as a pretty exciting season unfolds with what I believe is the vastly superior conference this year, the AFC. And why don't we start with the AFC East, which is kind of a traditional place to start, where you've got a pretty interesting division with four teams that all have a few question marks, but all could be 500 or higher. Yeah, it's fun. So, I have the win projections from Aaron Schatz's annual almanac, which formerly under the auspices of Football Outsiders, which was destroyed by some shady Canadian company. So, the projected wins for the division are Bill's 10 .8, so basically 11, Jet's 9 .8, so basically 10, the Dolphins 8 .5, perhaps a little lower than some men have anticipated, and the New England Patriots at 8 .1, projected to be under 500 for another year. So, do we think that's, yeah, and that's probably roughly how I'd see the division lining up, Bill's winning it, Jet's wild card. I mean, the Dolphins, so I guess take those, let's go one by one. So, the Bills are interesting in that they were probably the team most picked to win the Super Bowl last year, and it was a weird year, and yet they had a good record, the underlying stats were fine, but something always seemed a little bit off about them, and then they just got absolutely, the score on that Bengals playoff game was not as close as the game, and they struggled to beat Skylar Thompson the previous week. So, I think the question is, do we just kind of write off last year, Allen clearly was playing hard for a lot of the year, Miller was injured, tons of injuries to the defense, so we kind of write off last year's an aberration, and basically say they should be top contenders again, or do we say McDonough's gonna regret that 13 seconds where he turtled against Mahomes and Tyree killed the rest of his career. I have to say that instinctively I'm kind of leaning towards the latter, that I think the Bills are still a good team, but I wonder if they kind of lost their moment and the rest of the conference, several teams in the conference are kind of pulling ahead of them, but they're still good, I may be wrong about that, but there's something I don't know, there's something I don't entirely like about the vibes around that team, I'm not sure I can, I don't know if it's my old Josh Allen skepticism or what, but I think they're like a good team, but I would rank them pretty far below the, well, there's the injury issues of the Chiefs, but if the Chiefs and Bengals are healthier, I think I like them quite a bit more. Yeah, I would say that part of a hallmark of your approach to the Bills and Josh Allen is consistency, Scott, I mean, you've got another train and you've stayed on that train, as long as it will take you, right. I mean, yeah, you know, I don't know, I mean, this is an awfully good division, but I think every team in this division has serious questions, except for the Bills, right, you know, all of the other teams are solid, right, but would you really be surprised to see Aaron Rodgers completely fall apart, would you be surprised to see Tua get hurt, you know, and who knows what's going on in New England, but I mean, you know, the Bills, you know, I have to agree with you, right, that they need to be the favorite in this division and then much depends on two things which are very hard to predict, which are Tua and Aaron Rodgers and, you know, I think we have to grapple with the fact that we, you know, we can't, you know, I think we go into this Aaron Rodgers question with, you know, sort of seeing Tom Brady ahead of him and that's probably wrong, right, because, you know, Brady is so sui generis, right, that I don't think we can take that projection and then apply it to what we're going to see out of this Jets team, so I don't know, I mean, beyond the Bills, I don't know what's going to happen, what's going to happen in this division other than it's a pretty good division, there are going to be some pretty good games, I mean, I think I do agree that the Patriots are probably going to come in last, but I would not be shocked if any of the three teams, if any of the teams other than the Bills came in last, I would be shocked if the Bills even came in second, so.

It's Dennis Rodman has 28 siblings. Wow. That's a lot of offspring for Dennis Rodman's family. 28 siblings. We have the geek out challenges for me. Four films in which a stakeout appears. Isn't there a movie called stakeout with Emilio Estevez and Richard somebody? That's as good I can get a stakeout is a state. What is a stakeout where people are waiting outside of a building? Like all the lethal weapon movies have a stakeout, I would say. Danny press go reservoir dogs. I think they do some staking out in reservoir dogs. I don't know. That's a bad question for me. I think it's Aaron Carter. How I beat Mike. I think it's the name of that song. And that may be all I've got for songs about sports. I can't think of songs that the lyrics are about playing sports. Like, you know, we are the champions, but that's not really about a sport. That's a very tough one. And four franchises that depict a false utopia? Elysium, with Matt Damon. "I don't even know. Oh, that's a different mock draft. Okay. This one's not happening. Like Travis Jones at 42. Yeah, we're going to end it there. We're going to end it on a high note. We got to end on a good one. All right, all right. Here's another one. Oh, okay. This is, okay, all right, now we're getting crazy. We're training for debo Samuel. You can on that one. Interesting. So the general consensus here, I guess we can end it this way. The general consensus here, Alex, is that everybody wants DB. Like I saw a few linebackers, right? There's a few linebackers at the top pick, right? I think we saw a couple of Chanel nicobi deans. Yeah, everybody's taking Dax hill. We saw a couple of key or elams. Not a whole defensive back is where the fans want to go. At least based off of this exercise. So get ready for a tackle. Okay. Yeah. I've been thinking about this, you know, kind of coming to a conclusion here with this draft. I think the most interesting thing for the Patriots and this kind of segues into our Thursday mothra show. What are they trying to accomplish at the top of the giraffe? Are they looking at multiyear needs? Are they looking at tackle? Are they looking at spots like that? Or are they literally just looking for a player to make it immediate day one impact that a position of need, right? Corner, linebacker, like those positions, wide receiver potentially, if they go tackled and they're more interested in 2023 than they are in 2022. At the top of the draft at least. That's the general consensus there. So that's going to be an interesting way to look at it and see where the Patriots are going with this. And Alice and I will take another stab on Thursday ourselves. Patriots mock trash will probably around the same time as tonight 8 o'clock and do a little bit later this week, but we'll have mod draft of 5 might be you finally the day that Alex gets draft matters up. So you definitely want to come back for that. And next week, we'll do a first round mock one through 32. And then we'll do another patriots final mock draft next week before the draft. And then during the draft, it's really quickly. We'll have recap shows after every single round the next day. So Thursday night we'll have one Friday morning and so on and so forth. But for the short term, Thursday, what you need to know, same time, same place, a mock draft, 5. And this was fun. I'm glad we did this. This was, I wish I could give credit. Somebody DMed me on Twitter with the idea for the show. Yeah. Whoever that was, that this might be a yearly thing. This was actually fun. So thank you for that idea. Yes, absolutely. So Alex and I will be back on Thursday. Like I said, mock draft 5. Right here on patriots press pass and patriot speed. Thank you so much to everybody that sent in their mock drafts. We tried to get to as many as we could. People that asked the questions in the chat, we appreciate you too, and we'll see everybody on Thursday night. Until next time, signing off for Alex barth I'm Evan Lazar. Thanks for watching everybody. Have a good one..

"So I've said this before, I think all things considered the talent, the skill set, the position, the positional value, the way the position stacked, the other players of the position throughout the draft. Pound for pound, I think, quay walker is the best pick they could make in the draft if they can get him at 50. He's a good player. And I don't know that they can. For the other linebackers in the class. For what they need at linebacker. What do you bring to the table? All of that. He would be great. I love these first three picks, really. I do. I'm trying to tell if they add any future assets here. I can't put all moving around. He'll walk or bath as your defense is better. Those are three day one starters. I like Jalen amore Davis too as a potential upside corner on the outside and then we've talked about this. What much rather amor Davis and cordell flood? What much great, bigger green? And then a little fancy at the end, a little styling at the end with Connor Hayward and Jordan stout. It's a good polls, but players that the Patriots would like, this person has some research. This was well done. Did their homework? Yeah, this is a good one. I agree. Jalen armor Davis, long athletic head kind of a bumpy road at Alabama, but somebody wants season. Yeah, but somebody that I think is really, really high upside. The one thing that I would say about this draft and macro mentioned the age of the draft prospects, a lot of older guys, because of COVID, because it's just a wonky three or four year run for a lot of these dudes, like a lot of guys don't haven't played a lot of football, a lot of guys are older. It's just a weird, everybody's got something, right? Like everybody's either 25 year old rookie, Andrew bridge junior's only played 15 games in college, like there's always a little bit of something like that with a lot of these guys. In this class. It just seems like everybody's got just something going on with how many years they played or whatever. Jaylen on more Davis is another one of those guys I really like him. All right, one more, oh, well we got, okay, Jermaine Johnson's not making it there. I just don't think he's making it to 21. We talked about Danny gray. Tariq and Troy Andrews this is a good mock if it happens. I don't think it happens. I think it's a great mock of it happens. Here's the one I wanted to pull up a tire elam. Troy Anderson. Finally, somebody knows where to take.

"Starting safety. Troy Anderson, one of the best linebackers in this draft and adding speed to defense. We like John mechie. They get their starting garden Sean Ryan. We like McCollum. Long-term outside corners. And Jason Poe, too. I think he might start down the road as well. Marquand, son of a knight. I'm not learning how to do cartwheels if they come away with this class. That would be an excellent question. Good job. Alex Klaus, good job. All right. Here's another one. The player that I don't think we've talked quite enough about, Kellen deetz here from Arizona state. I think it's his own blocker, right? I think he belongs in his own system, put him with San Francisco, put him with the rams. Now at the Miami Dolphins, let him get out and scoop block and make box, moving laterally, side to side, but a really, really good athlete. If you want to make the Patriots projection, you're probably thinking he's like Nate's older, right? Like that's sort of where you're going with it. But yeah, I think that this mark is pretty much a lot of the guys that we saw a big trade out of the first round all the way, I don't even know what they did with oh, so they traded 21 to Dallas and they get 58 another third rounder and another fourth rounder. So they maximized the day two early day three picks instead of getting like another first or something like that. Yeah, like it's one thing if they're picking like what was the year that they took dog or they were picking like 27, 28, something like that. Yeah, they picked right. They moved back. I think they were picking 23. They moved back to 37. But they also did this with Jamie Collins, right? They moved back. If you're going to move out of the first round this year, you're almost in the top 20. I want future assets. I don't know if you can get a future first, but so this right, what is that 21? So. They get 88 and they get one 20. So I would almost instead of that four 20 because I also think this is an underpaid generally teams overpay to.

"I think he's going somewhere between a 101 50, maybe one 70. He's not going to be there in the 6th round. He might not be there in the 5th round. You can't just slide a rising like that and say, look at me, I drafted him. I get the credit. No, you got to take him. The PFF simulator just dropped certain players. We could have drafted David Collins who was a first round pick, it let us draft him in the 6th round in almost every draft we did last year. You got it at a certain point. The simulator is not going to respect you. But you got to respect it. You don't want to respect the process. The simulator doesn't respect it's not going to. I will say though. Alex, they're just saying that. And I don't mean to rip this person's mock traps. Trust me, you're not the only one who's taken matter rise at two ten. It's all over the place. Yeah. They got some good players here. This is out of the night. Great pick. Great pick potential pass catching back. One of the best kick returners in the country last year experienced player, oh, I love that pick. It's a little bit of a reach. Some people think he might go on draft and some people think you can get him in the 7th round. If they take him at 200 and he's going to come in and return kicks right away and then be the third down back in a year or two, that could be that could be a sneaky good pick. I love that pick. I can't remember exactly. I think he's bigger, but maybe like a little bit of a redo on JJ Taylor there, right? Like it kind of a similar type of player returns kicks, pass catching back. I could see that. All right, cordell flood. Another one in this draft. We talked a lot about the other guys. I don't want people to sleep on mama. I feel like we talk a lot about chenal. We talk about a lot in Kobe dean. Troy Anderson, mama's sort of getting lost a little bit in that. I feel like, does he feel like one of those guys that they're not going to have a shot because he's going to go between 21 and 54? Yeah, that's fair. He's a good player. And a lot of I saw some people talking about him on Twitter today for the Patriots. Alex and I not quite as high on him as everybody else, but all of a sudden cordell flood to the Patriots is like a hot pick in mock drafts that I've seen. Yeah. I don't see it like I get it..

"At the end of the day, they need three to four instant playmakers. I think they got three here. So there's that. Okay. All right, that's a positive spin on this one. All right, I'm gonna try to be nice. Here we go. Here's another one another Dax hill at the top of the draft, right? We got Dax here. I don't know. Well, trade down, right? We gotta trade down, grabbing Dax hill. Here, let's see if I can do it. No, I can't. That's a big deal. I'm trying to find out my phone. Just keep going. It's a screenshot of a cell phone, right? So we got I'll read it out in Dax hill, Leo Xiao, johny Zion McCollum, Luke fortner, Neil Farrell junior, kirin Williams villas Jones. Jason Poe, who's gotten a ton of love lately. Really good athlete. Really, probably the best pulling guard in the entire draft that maybe they can get in the 5th or 6th round. I really like Jason Poe a lot. So a couple of picks here I like on day three. Obviously everybody knows my love for real is Jones. Jason Poe, I really like as in their scheme as a power pulling guard, what do you think about Kyren Williams? I know the 40 times going to scare some teams off, but that kind of feels like where the Patriots pounce, right? Oh yeah, you're so worried about the four 6. We don't give a crap, right? We're going to take them anyway because it's a good football player. One of the best pass protectors that I can think of coming out of the draft at running back in a long time, like really a difference maker impact pass protector. And a really good receiver as well. We haven't talked a ton about backs. We haven't talked a ton about car and Williams. I think he's an interesting player for them. Yeah, he is. He's Tyler Beatty, but slower. And they're probably going to go on the same range, right? Anything that he boxed better already than pretty much anybody in this draft, right? So that's a big difference. When I look at this class though, I mean, you picked up future assets, daxton hill, day one, Leo Chanel, day one, Zion McCollum probably contributing by the end of year one. John metchie probably contributing by the end of year one. It's a decent class..

"Like, you know, one of these more sure guys, a little later on, or if he falls a little bit and you maybe go a guy like Andrew booth at the first and Tariq will then the third, I'm just saying, if he puts it together, technically. There's nobody in the league he can't guard. I'm Jeff. I've heard so many times about nobody. This is different. How many of those guys were 6 four four two converted wide receivers? Don't sleep on the converted wide receiver thing too. I don't sleep on different foods. Everything about him is you are building it from the ground. Let me ask you this. Are any of his flaws on coachable? No, I don't think they're necessarily that's the point. But the reason why Eileen ziya McCollum in this conversation, this is the debate we were having with Zion versus tyreek will. And the reason why Eileen's I am a column is because you turn on Zion and column and I get it said Sam Houston state, but you turn them on, he's got 13 career interceptions. He's got plays on tape, right? Football plays, not just him running fast in a straight line in Indianapolis at the combine. You watch him play football and he's a good football player on top of being a good athlete. I think Terry iguan might have higher upside because of his raw tools, but ziya McCollum is already on the third floor, right? And so that's the difference to me. I'd rather have ziya on the call. For the reasons you just said, you need somebody who's going to come in right away and compete. If they still had Steph Gilmore and JC Jackson, but both of those guys were on one year deals, then Tariq will make all the sense in the world because you have a year where he doesn't need to play, right? Obviously McCollum is like that's the thing with wool and that's why he's upside is so high and he's still a second or third round pick because you're not even guaranteed getting an NFL player..

"We saw the Patriots last year, Stevenson had a better software than junior year. Ronnie Perkins better software than junior, Trey Nixon, better saw or junior than senior, whatever it was like his two years ago tape was better than his tape leading into the draft. McKinley fits that. I think he's got tremendous upside. I think the one thing he's missing is he's still struggle sometimes with some more complex concepts in front of him reading them. I think a year working with Devin McCourty, Bill Belichick, the Patriots coaching staff would do wonders for his game. So if they can get him on day three, which is where it sounds like he's going to go. That would be a great pick. I'd be really excited about that. Yeah, so 5, ten, one 98. That's a big flag on him right now in terms of size, right? He's bigger than that. Yeah, but he plays bigger than that. I really like ramekins, all right. This is turning into the safety show, but we might as well get some of these guys that we haven't talked about a whole lot out of the way. Nick cross from Maryland. Really good tester. I think Matt grow is at his pro day at Maryland or somebody was at his previous I don't know if it was macro or somebody else, but somebody was at his pro day down there. When I watch him play my concern with him, he's a little tight, right? He's a little bound tight in the hips. I don't think that he's got quite that pedal turn run trigger to the football that I like to see from the prayer center Fielder. I think he's ideally a free safety in a too high shell scheme or too high heavy defense and not that true Devin mccordy play in the middle of the field type of guy, but a really, really good athlete. Really, really well built guy thick, you know, heavy burly build. He can really bring it to in terms of the hit stick. I just don't know if I can really trust him in pure center field roles and John Dodson's spun them around like a top playing in slot in the slot at slot corner. So I think that he's more of like a two high safety to me, but he can play. He'll be in the NFL for a while. Yeah, tremendous athlete. I mean, that's what pops off. I think he's explosive. I think a lot of the issues you attributed to. I don't think they're physical issues. I think he's just his instincts aren't totally there..

"Was he didn't play the game in a way they wanted him to, but they liked the wrong skill set and they thought they'd work with him and it just for whatever reason never connected. He never changed the way he played. I'd be worried about the same thing with carlotta especially if you're going to take him in the first round. Yeah, with you on that as well. Okay. More positionless defense here in the secondary. We've talked a lot about Dax hill. We haven't talked a ton about Jalen Petrie. If there is one guy out of this safety nickel group that has a better eye for the football or just knows for the football, it's Jalen Petrie. That guy's always around the ball. He's always on the fit in the run game. He's always around the football in the past game. You see him on tape and he drops in his own coverage and he covers like three guys on one rep, right? Like he's sifting through the processing and the reads of the quarterback and taking away. I've heard a lot of Buddha baker comps. I think there is a little bit of honey badger in his game as well, but he's totally positionless. He's a nickel safety, right? He's a guy that's going to play over this. He's going to guide that's going to play a depth deep but he's not going to play on the outside a ton. So similar to Dax hill, I think in that category, what do you think about Jalen Petrie? If the Patriots are that's full blown, we're playing zone and we're going position list, right? Like that's really going in that direction. Yeah, so to get kind of college football nerd out a little bit here. I like the idea of getting a safety from the big 12 that doesn't mean I think the only good safety are from the big 12 or every big 12 safety is good, but that conference, it's all very checked down or chuck, right? You're either throwing it to the running back underneath or you're throwing the ball in a go route. And the NFL is kind of becoming more of that way. I think the AFC east is down developing into a lot of that sort of football. So I think Petrie's been tested in a lot of ways. He's going to get tested in the NFL. I think that's good. Again, if they're going to go positionless, I love it. I don't love him as a replacement for Devin mccordy. I don't love him as the ideas to have him play corner. If they're going to, they want a guy. If they want a guy they can, but that's not maximized. Then take a slot corner, right? Yeah. That's going to take Marcus Jones. Unless you're going to move him. I said this when they signed Jalen mills, right? The way to maximize that signing was to move them all over the defense and not give him a position. I feel kind of the same about jaylen Petrie unless you're really going to use them as that chess piece and they have four or 5 guys that can do that at this point..

"But finding the sweet spot on day two for them to pick up another one of these guys is a little bit challenging with the way that their picks are drawn out, right? Especially if it's a nose tackle. Like if it's one of these hybrid tackle ends like dairy and math is from Oklahoma. Winfrey, thank you one of my favorite players in draft. Can't remember his name that time of year. Like if it's one of those guys, I think it's a little bit easier, right? It's the true nose in the second round as a little tough. Yeah. Okay, so at other one, I guess maybe if he falls to the Patriots, Jermaine Johnson from Florida state is getting some real light like top ten buzz, right? He's gonna go pretty darn high in the draft. And if all the players know that they could get in the front 7 in the first round, if he does magically fall to them at 21, there are very few guys that check as many boxes for what Bill Belichick wants out of a position like Jermaine Johnson easily to me better than Hutchinson better than kayvon thibodeau better than Trayvon walker. I think he's the best run defender out of this edge group bar none. I don't think anybody's better at him than processing, defeating blocks, posting up and holding up blocks. He is fantastic. And that phase of the game and can also rush the passer. I think he's gonna be a fringe top ten guy, but I would absolutely love him if the Patriots could get his hands on him. Yeah, I think he probably moved out of the equation when David ojabo tore his Achilles. Yeah. Because he kind of, Jabba was flirting with that top ten range, right? Until he had that injury and I think basically all the hype around, hey, here's this edge guy who's moving to the top ten really well rounded player, great athlete. Jeremy Johnson just kind of seamlessly filled that void when our job went down, right? So if what job was still on the board.

"This is a pure speed, get to the football type of player. Yeah, I mean, are you talking about chase winovich just in range of the draft? Like stylistically, I think he's a very different player. Yeah. He's I think he's a speed guy. Speed rush. Not like he didn't know. Bonitos like explosive. When I see Benito, I think more Ronnie Perkins. And I mean, obviously they're both in Oklahoma. He's playing that same role, but yeah, you know, if they're going to, I don't know that adding the day to edge guy like they've done in the last three years is the best way to go because these guys need to play. You can't just take these guys and Benjamin for three years because he kills their development. If they do have to do it, I think the needle is a pretty good option. You know, I'd rather some of the third round guys. Josh Pascal, Deangelo Malone, somebody just said, Jesse luketa in the draft who's probably more early day three, I don't see that investment being that high, but if they're committed to day two edge, I mean, there's an argument that Nick bonito's if boy mate goes in the first round that Nick bonito is the best day to edge guy on the board. So he's a good football player. At the end of the day, you want to add good football players. He's a good football player. I just get hesitant, adding players where you don't know when and where they're going to play. And I feel like that would be the issue here. Yeah, I think that this to me smells a little bit too much like the uche picks, like the Jennings pick, like the winnow pick. Like the Perkins pick, right? Like they've tried this so many times. How many more times are they going to take the high upside edge rusher on day two? Like how many more times are we going to do this? I think that that's a big concern that I have with a guy like Benito. I like them though. He's on my board. I think he was the football player. Yeah, I think he's fit what they've drafted in the past. I have some reservations about it being too much of more of the same. All right, Travis Jones. We talked about him a little bit, but he's been they've been spamming him in the chat out. So let's give Travis Jones some love and then.

"Yep, how's that? How's that? That's better. We're getting there. That was like a minute, a little over a minute. We're getting there though. Okay, Britain covey, I think a lot of people have said Slade Bolden, right? Everybody has kind of made the jokes about Slade Bolden connected slave bold and Britain and Britain covey is maybe a little bit lesser known Slade Bolden. I guess is the best way to put it. West Coast late Bolden. Yeah, play Bolton after dark. Yeah. So I don't think he's as good of a receiver as Bolden is. You're not bringing him in for that and he should be UDF, I wouldn't draft him. He's an excellent excellent kick and punt returner. He's one of the best in college football this year. He has been the last few years. He's, I believe he's Mormon, he did a mission, so he's going to be a little bit older. That's going to limit his upside. Maybe he's a receiver. If they, you know, we've talked about them drafting a lot of guys, Marcus Jones, Bo Melton, Wanda Robinson, who can return kicks. I think they're going to find their kick returner elsewhere in the draft. Somebody who contributes in another way, if they don't, COVID's an easy fit, and I think, you know, even if they do, you bring him in as maybe another option. So if you bring in slave bold and you really bring him into play special teams, I think it's the same with Britain, Kobe, but he's just a little bit faster. He's a little more explosive. I actually think he's a better returner. If we're between the two, there's something to be said for the bold and Matt Jones relationship, but I think I'd rather have Kobe. Yeah, if you're going to make Julian Edelman Wes Welker, Danny Amendola type of comparisons. I would say that Kobe moves a little bit more like those guys enslaved bold in terms of explosiveness as short area agility. He pops off the tape a little bit more than somebody like Slade Bolden and his movements go. So I actually leaned a little bit more towards Britain, Kobe as well as my guy and that 7th round UDF a type of mold of who's the next settlement. If it's going to be anybody from this draft, I think it might more be Britain, COVID, and it will be Slade Bolden. Yep. Thank you. Okay, now we're hitting rhythm. So this is about trading up. We can talk about it in the prism of trading up, but also just Derek singly in general if he does have a fall on draft night as some draft analysts have theorized he might fall into the early teens or something like that. Do you feel like he's good enough as a prospect to go up and get him? Yeah, yeah, I mean, I've said this ever. I think he's the best corner in the draft. I do. The sauce gardener stuff I get it, but I still think Stanley, the ceilings higher. I think the reason people were hesitant on them was kind of bull crap. Oh, we didn't do the combine. A lot of got Jacoby dean didn't do the combine. A lot of guys didn't do the combine. None of the top tackles did the combine. We're still high on them. He has some injury history. I get that. The upside is so, so, so elite, like, so elite, like I would trade up to ten. Now the jets aren't going to give them to you. And I don't think he gets it, and he shouldn't get to that..

"We need to draft somebody in the first round that's going to fill a whole and play instantly right away as a rookie because Trent mcduffie strikes me as a type of guy that might be more in the category of a Jonathan Jones replacement rather than a JC Jackson replacement, right? And they obviously have Jonathan Jones on the roster right now. So yes, down in Miami, you do have to cover two guys that Jonathan Jones would definitely cover and Tyree kill and Jay and waddle, but not every team has two guys that runs and run in the four twos. So you don't necessarily need that in every single matchup. Drafting a corner in the first round for one team that you're going to play twice a year is you got 14 other games, right? 15 other games a year. Then you got to worry about. So that's my take on mcduffie is what are they looking at? Long term or short term with that pick. The other thing about this being rapid fires, you give your take, I give my take next prospect. You me next problem. Okay, all right. All right, my take though. I do appreciate that. Let's see if I can pick this up a little bit here. Okay, nicobi dean, we've talked about nicobi dean a little bit. But I think that both of us are weary of projecting a 226 pound linebacker to Bill Belichick. It's just not his usual MO. But if they're going to change the way that they play defensively, it's possible that they could go in this direction. I don't think so though and I'm going to tell you why in a second, go ahead and put your timer. Yeah, no, you're spot on there, I think it ultimately comes down to the defensive philosophy. They can't draft them and play them like donta Hightower and send them downhill all the time to stop the run. If they're going to change this up though in the secondary is going to get the linebackers are going to get involved in coverage. They want guys to really flow sideline to sideline. If they're going to do the new age defense. Nicobi dean is his new AG as you're going to get. It's just a matter of, is that what they want the defense to be? Yeah, so I think the biggest thing is that I wanted to get to this. We talked to Matt gro oh, stop it. We talked about it. It's a challenge. We talked to macro last week and I asked him about speed on defense. And he went into an answer saying that they definitely want to get faster, but one of the things that he pointed out was that they could get faster by potentially playing guys at different spots than what they lined up in college, like playing safeties at linebacker..

"We are 8 days away, 9 days away from the NFL Draft, as we sit here on Tuesday evening. A week from Thursday is the first round. Obviously, the rest of the draft will then follow over the course of the weekend. So we're getting closer by the minute. You're getting closer by the day. We're almost there. If you haven't done your homework on the draft, well, now you're cramming. That's the way I look at it. So Alex and I are the part. What do they like to say? Behaves in the barn. Matt Jones is saying all last year on Fridays when we talked to him. The hay is in the barn. So to speak, I wouldn't say all the haze in the barn for me. I think there's still a few guys that I'm trying to kick the tires on. We still got till next Thursday night, technically to get all of our cross and our eyes dotted. So we still got some time, but we're getting there. Yeah, my plan is to have the hay in the barn by next Wednesday. Honestly, I did this last year. It's actually very relaxing. I took the day before, I didn't take it off, but I kind of just chilled the day before the draft and it was nice. So we'll have a show that Thursday morning. That'll probably be our final match. But yeah, we are, we are getting there right now. Do you want to let people know what we're doing on this show since it's going to be very interactive? Yes, very interactive show plan tonight. We're excited to do this one. We are going to take some questions. That's why we titled the show at Q&A. Our goal is to do fire prospects. A couple of questions that I do want to get to off the top that are a little bit more big picture. And then we'll really get into it and set this up. We want to go rapid fire. You give us a name. We give you a take. That's our goal here tonight. I think we brought a couple of those already here more or less. Yes, we do. So I'm excited about it. But that's we're really going to try to hone in on this rapid fire structure. We've tried to do this before and we tend to do on patriots beat. We get a little bit off the rails at times and a little bit distracted from the endgame here..

"Sacks. Against paid Manning and in the snow, and we going to local second Super Bowl in a row. So that was the most memorable game for me as a patriot. I think that is amazing that you were able to share those fabulous New England Patriots, memories with us. And I like that you mentioned that's basically back in the day when people didn't really even know who Tom Brady was. He was just up and coming. He had just started to take the place of true blood so back in the day, if I remember correctly, again, I was very young as well back in 2003 and 2004, but I do remember going to some of those Super Bowl parades and I know that coach Belichick and coach Nick Saban are very tight knit Friends. So you think you being drafted by coach Belichick had anything to do with them to being buddies or no. I would say yes, Jarvis. We'll say yes. Let me tell you a story. Was it 2000 5 or 2006 I remember we had a stretch. And I bought chicken walks around what is whistle, right? And he was just walking into he walked into my into my group, so I was like a captain in the front and he was like, hey, how's your coach doing? I'm stretching. I'm like, what you mean? Who are you talking about? How's your coach doing? Coach, what are you talking about? And he kept twisting his whistle. He said, how is she a freaking culture doing it? It was profanity. And I said, Bill, what are you talking about? He said, how's Nick doing? Oh, Nick Saban? I guess he's doing great. I taught the coach. I thought 7 all the time. When I was playing, I used to go see him all the time. When I went back to other shoe and he said, how is he doing? He's doing great. He's winning football games, you know? And he said, well, you go tell him this. No, no, no. This is what he said. He said, he is the only reason why I drafted you. Tell Bill boats had told me. He's the only reason why I drafted you. Wow, so there's the answer right there. Straight out of the horse's mouth. And I was like, Brett, I was like, kind of tearing up a little bit before practice. I'm like, coach. I'm like, I appreciate you. Thank you. Thank you. You have to tell me this, you know, thank you. You know, so that's yeah. Their relationship is the only reason why. Well, that is awesome. I'm glad that I asked that question. I actually, I've never met Bill Belichick or your other coach from college, but I watched a really awesome documentary on them. Yeah, I missed that. I was supposed to be there because before it came out, they invited all the guys that played for both of them. And I couldn't make it. I had something going on with my kids at the time. And I mean, both of them, they're like, feel like twins. They're like, they're like, the same person. Nick Saban had such a power over you getting what the New England Patriots. So good thing that you made a good impression on LSU Jarvis..

"Sports show. It's real, it's wrong. There's a positive pop. You are now Robin with the Boston. So thank you so much for sharing so much about your days at LSU. I fully enjoyed learning so much about college football and your experiences there. I think it's amazing that you played under coach Bill Belichick. You were drafted by the New England Patriots and the fourth round in the 2002 NFL Draft. You were a key member in defense that helped the New England Patriots win not one but two Super Bowl titles, both in 2003 and 2004. I think that is absolutely incredible because again, I grew up in the New England area and obviously I grew up watching the New England Patriots. So I'm super excited to be talking to you about being with the team at the height of when they started to become the dynasty. So let's just talk a little bit about your time with the New England Patriots. Do you have any memorable moments that you would like to share with us? And what is it like being a Super Bowl champion? Because you will carry that title with you for the rest of your life. So congrats. You know what, I got to say, I've been blessed and has been honored just even kid drafted by the Patriots because when I got in, they just won the first Super Bowl. People still trying to figure who was Tom Brady. He wasn't who he is now. I mean, bless her went out. They won the Super Bowl. We come in my first year. And we went 9 and 7, but I know for me it was the first game for the stadium to inaugural season, who playing the Steelers, my first pro regular season game and we were playing against cordell Stuart. He's a Louisiana legend. From New Orleans and I remember having a sack like 6 tackles stripped forced fumble and that was just epic for me going in as a fourth round draft pick. I mean, a lot of great guys, a lot of great players and just to be in the mess, you know? And that year, like I said, we wait 9 and 7, but then the next year going to Super Bowl playing in Houston and one of our first Super Bowl with the Patriots and their second, just honor an opportunity because I know when I got drafted, I never thought that I would be playing a play, you know, 8 years with the team, because I was more like a tweener. I was big enough. I wasn't fast enough. I was strong enough, but also just even LSU when Nick Saban had been going to New England to Clifford coach Belichick. So everything that people hear about the story is the team. I mean, it just exciting and we are different type of team just how a DNA. I mean, guys playing well together, guys, was like family. And all the great ups and downs, but we had more ups and downs, my 8 years there. And just to excitement and just the winning attitude and just a formula that I missed a craft board and Belichick and just the guys. And I got to see for me, I feared the Steelers game, but I think the game against India was coach 2003 AFC championship game. I had.

First Things First
LaVar Arrington Makes Case for Steelers, Ravens Making the Playoffs Over Patriots
"Restart the rookie taking the pats to the playoffs. You agree with him patriots. It pains me to do this because so many people are on the positive train of of mack jones. But i just don't see him leading up to the playoffs. I don't see them being a while. If i'm looking at it from a critical critical perspectives Just i think that you can't count out the ravens to win the division for for one. You can't count out the steelers ever because it's just not on the record book. Their their resumes says that they win. under my tomlin. So you can't just write that off and say that the browns are going to be the division chad's it looks like it lines up for that because they have injuries and baltimore. They had age issues in line issues for question in pittsburgh but nonetheless. These are still a big brothers on the block. And until cleveland proves that you'd have to assume that cleveland could be a playoff team but could ultimately slip into being one of those wild card teams as well. So when i look at what what the patriots are going to have to do. In order to qualify. I just i see teams more teams that make more sense to make it to the playoffs this year. Then a rookie led new england patriots team. To look for that people may not be discussing right now. I wrote them down. Or the broncos make sure you pay attention to the broncos. This could be a dark horse team to pay attention to get them way more but an opportunity to make it to the playoffs Oh in a while. Car bid over over the new england patriots.

New England Patriots Press Pass
"new england patriots" Discussed on New England Patriots Press Pass
"Jones but really behind. That is a lot of question marks. And now you're starting one of those question marks and we're talking about potentially starting jalen mills at the outside cornerback position which is totally miscast. With jesse jackson. Operating is your number one and what's funny is for a couple of years here. You had outstanding cornerback coverage in crap pass rush and that's how the patriots got things done is people would just be covered for longer. Now you're really gonna need that pass rush to step up because they are definitely thin to start here at the cornerback. And i don't even want to think about week four against Against brady and the patriots. All of those receivers what they're going to throw out there without without gilmore right. I mean week one against miami. You're going to be going on the park or jalen waddell. Mike sippy in really good. Miami dolphins skill position right. I mean they. They got tight ends. Got wide receivers down there. They got a young quarterback into of who they are. I on as well under rumors about to for healthy fuller is not healthy. He's also suspended. I i believe i was nervous. Wasn't for one or two right. So so i don't think he's going to be in the game but still jalen waddell and devante parker enough right to make off a defensive coordinator. Steve villigen bill jenkins may lose some sleep at night as they say right. So that's going to be a test week. Two against the jets is what it is but then you get into week three in week. Four against new orleans and against tampa bay. You're talking about some really good passing. Attacks rights teams that. Have some really good receivers. Obviously tampa bay has a pretty good quarterback that you might have heard of so. There's going to be a lot of tests for the secondary now. The good news is is that the pass rush has looked as good as advertised through the entire summer. Joshu j. match you don. Vanoy hightower certainly chased win abridge when he gets in there christian bar more dietrich wise on the defensive line as interior guys rushing the passer. Everybody has looked In that group rushing the vast writers got some issues baby against stopping the run with some of those individual players win if it's wise far more but in terms of the package when they actually go out there in their ears back. This is going to be a really ferocious pass rush. So that's how they're going to have to do it right. They're gonna have to disguise it. They're gonna have to cover some things up on the back and they're gonna have to really get after the quarterback and that's going to ultimately be this defense calling for the all the time deal more year could you see. Here's the other thing too is You know obviously a reasonable name out there still still looking for job. Richard sherman I don't see it but again You wonder Right now you will have. There's a couple of names released Out there as well Wouldn't be stunning if the patriots Snag one of the guys Who who gets let go and again you're talking about you know twenty five to thirty players per team about to get wacked today. There's going to be a pool of talent. There might be some surprises out there but again nothing that's going to be able to overcome Not having stefan gilmore for the first six weeks of the season of so that's gonna be Definitely tough anything else. You see here as far as the roster goes looking ahead have you changed your thinking In terms of some of the cut downs and who may now make it an who may not know. i mean. I had a feeling that they were going to carry..

New England Patriots Cut Cam Newton; Mac Jones to Start
"Speaking with our breaking news at foxborough. The patriots are releasing cam newton. And we'll move forward with as their quarterback pro football focus posted this week that the alabama rookie has the best preseason rookie passing rate since two thousand thirteen and now look to do with him. Couldn't do last year. Get new england back to the playoffs. Oh shannon what will be the patriots record with mac as a start of the season trying to look as you mentioned. I've tried to schedule and looking at it I say this is gonna make the playoffs. And so i believe it's gonna take ten wins for them to make the playoffs. So i'm gonna go ten ten and seven at the bare minimum possibly lebanon states. But i'll be conservative. I'll say ten and seven I think mayfield play well. I know they're not going to rely olmec as much as maybe some of the other quarterbacks but they're going to run the football i believe they're going to be a top five running team and everything they do is going to be predded gonna be set up the running game so they're gonna be heavy play action. They went to the to tidy. As they went and got a hindrance free agency got john newsouth upgraded the wide receiver position. I think decide nelson born. Yeah so they got some weapons. I man i still like jacoby. Myers i like here tomorrow. Watching the better he gets. I really liked jacoby. Myers in so with that being said skipped. I'm gonna say they go tunas seven and they make the playoffs.

You don't know how it was going to come for him to take that opportunity and run with it. That's what you want to see. That being said. I still think Cam Newton is going to be starting September 12th. I just feel that he's going to start the season as the number one quarterback for Bill Belichick. I'm excited. And the falcons make it four for four to begin the draft selecting their quarterback of the future trae lanes. Should it go this way. It would be the first time ever that quarterbacks go with each of the first four picks in the draft. We take a look at the rest of mel's top ten. After the four consecutive quarterbacks we see some other names you will get to know. Kyle pitch superstar tight end. More pass catchers jamarcus devante smith jail waddell notably absent on this screen. Max jones the fifth quarterback in this first round the star from alabama who mel projects. Going number fifteen to the new england patriots and let's start there because mel we spoke about this the last time you broke this down for us. You had max jones going considerably higher namely number eight overall. Why do you see this drop. Greenwich carolina eight with matt rule had max jones at the senior bowl practices where he was exceptional right. So you figure carolina's stuck at eight. They would look at mack. Jones new england and fifteen is built. Bellichik nick sabin connection and obviously looking at a quarterback to get back to. Maybe the tom brady days. Okay get your that type of quarterback which is what mack jones is his style and the way he goes about his business as a pocket passer so once carolina in my mach three point. Zero was moving up to get justin field. Mack jones next opportunity to come off. The board for me would be new england at fifteen.

Houston Texans' new GM Nick Caserio says team has 'zero interest in trading' QB Deshaun Watson
"All the talk of trading the shawn watson trading show. i want to be traded. Matter of fact the weeks ago we had not heard from the houston. Texans we started the show by saying like look i. I don't know how to break it to you. But the us is don't actually have to trade shawn watson. He signed a contract after they hired after they traded new cop-killer that contract paid him. Seventy three million dollars up front in cash which is not just signing bonus for the first year and for the contract but for this coming year and the following year. He's already been paid for those years so money. They can't recoup they're not gonna just go away. We paid you for three years. You played one. You have good. You have a good run. You have a good life. Plus there's a tax bill not a tax bill. There's a dead cap money if he leaves like the whole thing is not great. And what's the best case scenario in the draft. A quarterback to become watson doesn't. Oh yeah i i should mention that if you trade to shawn watson in basically the first year of his new deal fifth what does it say about anybody else contract with texans at once out nick. Caserio is the new general manager of the texans. He came from new england patriots and he had this to say at his press conference about an hour ago. Just want to reiterate our commitment to shawn watson. he's had a great impact on this organization. A great impact on a lot of people great impact on the team and we look forward the opportunity to spend more time with them here this spring once we get started and we have zero interest in trading the player We have a great plan vision for for him and for this team and his role in our team and we look forward to the opportunity to spend more time with them. Here this spring. That was nick caserio. The new gentlemen andrews just like hey look we look forward to spend. Tom is first statement. We have no intention of trading. Do i think he's telling the truth i do. I think it's highly unlikely they trade him now. If somebody says like we'll give you the kitchen sink then sure you gotta consider it. You gotta consider it.
