"It's kind of salt in the wound that nobody was ever actually brought to justice for it. Yeah yeah 'cause it just even law enforcement you know believing that they knew who it was and couldn't prove it ever or didn't have enough time to prove it. You know it still leaves that sliver of possibility that it. It wasn't him that it was someone else and that is just a whole nother can of horrific worms. Yeah and maybe that person just to live there fucking life. Yeah and there's there's a lot of other information about the case. It's totally something that we could have done like three episodes on But i you know it's just one of those things it'll stick with me for sure. Yeah well i think you did that case justice and that was a i don't wanna say wonderful retelling of the story but it was a nice tribute to the family. Thank you all right so now. I'm going to talk about the case. That i found an my horror movie. Setting was an abandoned hospital. And i kind of again Flip this on. Its head a little bit because as you will see as i go through this case the abandoned hospital didn't actually happen until after the case so this crime created kind of this horror movie setting. Okay so i just want to give a little trigger warning. I will be talking about gun. Violence So just beware of that and all of my sources most leave the majority came from the union. "Thank you guys. Support us if you can. Austin what are we seeing bar guy so we're looking at fresno county right now. These numbers are just barely limiting the very very small. Obviously gavin is up more than like fifteen percent that to On the recall no compared to the yes two point six percent right now but this is all just temporary more votes. You're going to continue to come in. Obviously what we talked about earlier and livestream was the seven million votes. I got sent back in. There is still another millions of both. I can't do the math in my head thinking about it but the people that voted today they might have filled out their ballot or filled out a couple of days ago. That's still have seven days to have senate in prior to today so the astor astor boat. Yeah the boat. So that's going to continue to go on for another seven days shade about california's kind of like arizona. Like charlie mentioned before when we were doing the twenty twenty third world country when it comes to county as well. It's one that i liked about rhonda santa's wouldn't be. He became governor. He told the legislature that. Give me a bill that says at nine thirty on election night. If you don't have your county results and you're gonna stand before a judge the next day and tell me why exactly you don't have that so all the other states the the model that is nine thirty no both going to. I wanna get jackson here. If i'm i'm looking at this data correctly lassen counties and other county northeast california. It's traditionally seventy four percent republican county but with the democrat vows being drug. It's eighty-one percent in favor of getting rid of and that's right on the border of reno nevada. I think a little bit north but yeah it's right on. I think it's right at sierra nevada county but the point is this correctly they are five points behind the where they need to be. We might have a five points. It could be right within the march i could. I could be wrong. Lou stated where poor over it santa barbara county. Let's look at that one to andrew. Yeah santa barbara which actually is rather conservative in most well. There's there's there's a lot of money in santa barbara closeted conservatives. It's actually home of the reagan ranch and things like this. You know so. Now it's sixty seven percent to keep new some thirty two percent to remove some but it's traditionally a sixty four percent democrat county with again they get all of their best reporting in and they're still either tied or behind where they need to be and every one of our counties exceeding where we need to be there was there was a an event held at the courthouse in santa barbara. That was a a recall. Gavin newsom and the local organizers said they had never ever seen as many people come out it was a sea of people. And you got to imagine like this is liberal liberal santa barbara a ceo of conservative came out in support of recall gavin newsom. It was a massive show of force to be on. I'd never seen anything like. I didn't know there was that many conservatives in santa barbara too so taught from the new york times which i'm not always wanna site. But it's their own internal stuff. The batch of votes we are describing right now are heavily. Democratic democrats have historically voted in higher numbers by mail newsom strategists. Expect a big advantage in all of these early turns again big event. There's no big advantage in any of these numbers. Were going through there tied or worse than they were in two thousand twenty or eighteen particularly populous counties like l. a. and san francisco. Let's la county. They just dropped seventy six percent in favor of the democrats which traditionally let's go to la county. There's seventy one percent again with their heaviest. they're only this is holding. They're five to six percent right right right where they where the number used to be. But that's going to slide by at least another ten points right. Fifty nine percent of estimated votes reporting. This is their heavy push. This is their. This is their blitzkrieg writing. This is everything they've got gotta remember. Los angeles county is big. So don't just think of the city of a city of l. a. which is going to be eighty twenty. You got to think of the the fact that they have far reaching wave as their sheriff whose relatives conservative us i mean. There is a lot of rural area in that in that devastating numbers to report here. It looks like gavin. Newsom has held the french laundry. That's napa county napa county vote. He's alive right now. Does own winery. There is where pelosi lives behind a massive black hair. Grace grace licked. His voice. Looks like if you believe in the joker origin story where he falls new vada acid. He's the joker. And before the fall into the vat of acid so i got i got some numbers for fresno county so no on the recall. Eighty-three thousand which is fifty three percent of the vote. Yes seventy one thousand with forty six percent of the vote so ending various trending raleigh. Nice larry. good. I'm telling you know coming is about all the early votes are here. That's very very well. Might all of a sudden. I'm telling you right now about thirty minutes. I think we're gonna see a little bit of equilibrium happen here so statewide. Don't believe fake news media. We're the place here to look at real numbers real things that it looks right now. Oh my goodness four point. One million people want gavin newsom to stay. I know it's hard to believe. And only one point eight million people want him to go. This is their greatest push. They have their greatest push is a seventy two thirty push. It would usually be an eighty to twenty pouring a stiff drink right about now are getting ready to..

"Beth rosenberg on the show. Sarry is a public high school teacher in manhattan whose career was originally due to start on september eleventh. Two thousand one school time can always bring about some mixed emotions. Then you add cove in one thousand nine hundred anxiety the to the mix. It can be a lot of profit. We've got a local breaking news alert for parents students and teachers in ware county. All public schools will now be closed for two weeks because of a rise gerona virus cases. This all started with the school board in williamson. County passing a mask mandate that went into effect today. Hundreds of parents who could not fit inside the auditorium stayed outside shouting no more masks during a protest. The president saying today this is about safety not about politics. Very term itself critical race theory has become a political flashpoint across the country. Especially when it comes to how to teach young people about justice and equity in america. Hi my name is sherry. Beth rosenberg. I believe that we have to educate in order to have a democracy. Sorry not sorry sorry you are going back to school and the delta variant is raging across the country. Tell me how that feels. It feels scary. I will say that my first emotion about back to school is. I am excited. I was teaching remotely all last year while since march twenty twenty and when i finished up the school year online i talk to all my students from this year. Saying we go back. This was when it was announced in new york city that we didn't even the masks anymore and all my students we're getting vaccinated so we left the end of the school year on such a good note that we're gonna have a pizza party when we get back and meet each other in real life and they're going to help me decorate my classroom. Something i loved doing. And all that came crashing down mid july and suddenly my emotions around returning to splurge back to how. I was honestly feeling your ago and i hate to say that out loud because i had such different expectations of how i was going to feel this summer. Is it anxiety. Can you pinpoint what you're feeling anxieties. The word for it. It's anxiety for my students because first of all. I know that they're returning with heightening anxiety. After a year being essentially shot in not socializing the way they're used to and they already felt anxiety and now. I know for sure that everyone's going to be extra anxious about safety about just the fact that even when you're vaccinated this virus can spread and so i wanted to put all my social emotional support into helping them. Acclimate back to in person. Learning and what that means and my goal is to add a lot of socializing back into our activities because they haven't been able to socialize with each other in that way and now. I'm anxious about even doing that. Because god forbid. I do activity where people are a little too close and someone gets sick in my classroom. It's so unfair. I mostly just feel angry for our young people. Because they're getting short changed a second year. I know as. I dropped my kids off to school this morning. For their first day. Bellas in first grade and milos in fourth grade. And they're too young to get the vaccination so also dealing with that terror of of course they're going to get sick because kids get sick and school and being someone who's anxious anyway once that happens. Let's say it starts with both. My kids usually get super poopie when they get sick. Guess sign that. They're seconds so. I was trying to work through in my head that first time during the school year when they get sick and my own hysteria of is this just strap as it something that we can treat with antibiotics or is it cova. And that's just because i think they're still so unknown about how children get this and how they get sick and what parts of there being are impacted. I'm just terrified. i'm so sorry it's just. It's not my fault but as a woman. I always apollo i apologize on behalf of the delta variant right. He's apologized i'm not yes. Sorry not sorry. What cova protections is your school requiring for you and for the students. I believe that we have those pepe filters in every classroom. Not every classroom. That exist in. My school building has windows so i'm hoping that like last year we don't use those windowless buildings but that has to do with capacity. How are teachers responding to this. Debate over mass mandates so by and large teachers want the mass mandates across the country. It's not that teachers like mass. It's really uncomfortable to teach in a mask is uncomfortable to be in a mask. As part of the reason why ventilation systems really have to be better. But we've just been thrown a curve ball with the delta variant and we want more important than anything else. Schools need to be open full on four kids for a safe and welcoming and joyful school year. And we need to keep them open. And that's what the mass mandate will help do as of now what's going on in new york city. At least i can sort speak for other places by in new york city. The last shock beat article. I read that covers. Education is that administrators are in conversation with the department of education asking them from work guidance. About what social. Distancing is supposed to look like the other issue that i saw it. There's a group called teens take charge. And they're a young activist group in new york city. They fought for school integration and they just sent a petition out asking for a remote school option. So that's something else. That's kind of looming in the background. And Sacramento. A little north of that would not actually in Nevada. Nope we're in the state of California and we are standing right between Nevada County and Yuba County and we're standing on the beautiful Yuba River which flows down to the feather. And then the Sacramento from there down into the San Francisco Bay in the ocean. So you were a county board of Supervisors member when you first came here. Tell us about your first experience with this. Damn down a few different times over my life had been here my whole life. It was built and commissioned in nineteen forty seven by the Army Corps of Engineers so that people could resume hydraulic mining blocks hundreds of miles of potential fish passage for fish. Come from the ocean and go up into the high sierra to lay their eggs so when I first came to the damn understanding that the state of California had targeted this spot em federal government as maybe the best place to restore passage at the very first meeting we went to the. Us Geological Survey stood up and said you can't do anything to that. Damn until you look at the material behind it is holding back a whole bunch of mercury and that was the very first time I had ever heard anything about mercury and the state of California and its role in the goal rush. Or how long have you lived in this part of the world? My family came to California as part of the Gold Rush. We were quakers. Escaping the east coast. Ten violent religious oppression moved out to become farmers I was raised in Concord California on that form and in one thousand nine hundred five. I married a farmer and we moved to Nevada county beautiful organic farm in a place called Penn Valley. Tell us about this county and just its history and the gold rush because it is a lot of history here. Nevada county was ground zero of the California Gold Rush. Far More gold was taken out of this county and specifically this river that we're standing above than any other place in the state of California. It's where the very destructive technique called hydraulic mining which is using power water monitors to to scrub mountainside. Looking for gold is where that was invented. They started to dam the rivers and convey that water over to these huge hydraulic mining activities. Which were recovering thousands of of gold but millions of tons of sediment not material here from Nevada county rolled down the river and kept flooding the Sacramento Valley and eventually the farmers downstream who are really tired of having their houses filled with all this debris sued and stopped the activity known as hydraulic mining. Was the connection between Mercury and gold. Tell us how that process works. Everybody came to understand that the very dramatic impact of hydraulic mining because it was blowing these huge amounts of sediment down the river. But people didn't understand. Was that before they use. Those hydraulic monitors. They would treat the cliffs with Mercury Mercury on the cliff. Pound the cliffs with water the water to wash down into sluices and in those sluice boxes were also filled with mercury. Why did they use mercury keep? Mercury helped enhance called processing. It has a unique ability to amalgamate or hold the gold. So little tiny flecks of gold. That might be smaller than an eyelash would fall into the pan. But they're just wash out unless they were captured by mercury. Mercury would grab the gold. Make it heavy fall to the bottom of the sluice. When they turn the water off. Miners would come through and suck that mercury out of the bottom of the sluice they would take the mercury put it in a hot place they would call retort it like think of a hot iron frying pan and the mercury sort of melting off the top or or training into gas off the top and at the bottom of your pan. You'd have sparkling gold. The problem is curious. Mercury is a very dangerous neuro toxin. And it's dangerous in a variety of ways so badly that the United Nations World Health Organization Amnesty of California have both named it. The top bioaccumulative toxic material of concern. Mercury is a neuro toxin. It affects the developmental human being so our ability to deform our nerves are heart or lungs. Our brains it creates Serious birth defects and people have focused on that for many many years but as research has been done we learn that it continues to damage us as adults. It seems to be causing problems with our hearts with our lungs and with our various different organs which accumulate mercury. So it's a known neuro toxin and that's strike one against it strike to is it bioaccumulates in our body. It doesn't really easily leave our bodies many of the things we take in. Let's take alcohol. You drink it and two days later. It's all out of your body not so with Mercury it stores itself in your body and builds up over time strike. Three is that this material does. What's called bio magnifies in the environment? So the most dangerous place for a piece of mercury to be is in water particularly in warm water. Mercury is taken up by the little bugs at the bottom of the food chain. They eat a little bit of it. It transfers up to the bigger bugs and then the bigger bugs and then the fish and then the humans or as we watch here today. The waterbirds that are flying around might pick up. Officiant eat it. They are eating a highly toxic potent load of mercury so much so that the lake. We're looking here like Anglo. Bright has fish advisories on it that advice that a woman of childbearing age eat not a single bass out of this lake fish mornings. I run along this Anchorman River. There will along the Sacramento. And then you go down to San Francisco Bay. The same warnings that so it's in fact the entire ecosystem. The mercury that is in the Delta is entirely from these legacy minds in the areas. We are the gold mines and sadly for California. We had a unique geology which led us have mercury in our state as well. The coastal range has the mercury minds. Whether it's the ones down in San Jose or the ones Tamales Bay or up over on the clear lake there are serious old legacy mercury minds which are contaminating the coastal range and the tributaries that drain from there into the bay or into the ocean where we are everywhere. There was gold mining. They use this mercury not only for the the hydraulic mining but also for the hard rock mines which dominated the landscapes for one hundred years and all of those continue to leak mercury into the state of California water bodies every time it rains

"Since one thousand nine hundred sixty. California has officially been known as the Golden State. And that's because as the plaque reads California's development and remarkable prosperity began with the discovery of gold humanities. Love of gold is fairly bizarre of all the hundred and eighteen elements in the periodic table. Gold is the only one which we humans have always gravitated towards gold was used earliest currencies. Gold joined us in marriage and was used to produce most precious artifacts. Maybe the secret to our love of gold is simply that it's beautiful and never tarnishes in eighteen. Fifty-three my father's great grandfather Henry. Cohn traveled from a tiny stelle. In what is now Poland to Hamburg where he boarded a boat and six months later. After walking across the isthmus of Panama Henry ended up in San Francisco. Henry Cohn was part of the Goldrush the largest mass migration in American history bringing about three hundred thousand people to California. It all started in eighteen. Forty eight when James Marshall found gold in his piece of land at Sada's mill in Coloma. The News of gold quickly spread around the world. At first the gold could be picked up from the ground but later on it was recovered from the streams and rivers with the use of panned. The gold rush peaked in eighteen fifty. Two and after that the Gold Rassoul getting thinner and harder to reach soon largescale and more environmentally damaging methods of traction cold hydraulic mining were employed. One hundred and seventy years later on the environmental legacy of the gold rush a significant and yet acknowledged as we'll discover in today's episode mercury which is a deadly neurotoxin was elemental to the process of gold-mining today large quantities of mercury from the gold. Russia's still polluting California posing a risk to every kind of living organism including us. I travel up to California's gold country to meet with Izzy Mountain.
