"New York Yankees took the rubber match of their three game set with the Los Angeles angels Thursday afternoon. Rallying for 5 runs in the first city on route to a 9 to three win at Yankee Stadium. That altered winning pictured Nestor Cortes approached just a little bit. Puts me on the attack. "I make rally a fangraphs and I am joined as always by Ben limburg of the ringer and how are you? Not bad, how are you? I'm not bad, you know? You know what's kind of bad? The U.S. rotation for the WPC? Yeah, how about that? Have you looked at this starting staff lately? It's not the greatest. It has lost some notable arms of late. It certainly has, yeah, the most recent being Clayton Kershaw, who was disappointed not to be on this team Nestor Cortes also dropped out due to injury. So now you have this 6 man rotation on the American WBC team, Adam Wainwright, Brady singer lancelin, Merrill Kelly, miles Michaelis, and Kyle Freeland. Yeah. Not the greatest group. And I guess that's really nothing new because often it's trouble to get pictures to pitch and WBC. I mean, I guess the ace for the American team last time around was Marcus stroman, right? So it's just often tough to get the top arms to participate, but I was curious to see just how this U.S. WBC rotation would stack up to just individual team rotations in terms of projections for 2023. Obviously the WBC team doesn't have to play a full season, so it's sort of a silly exercise, but if the U.S. WBC team were just a regular major league team, their rotation would be 11th. Just compared to just the other teams. That's just looking at the top 6 pitchers on every team's starting pitcher, depth chart. So it would go Yankees rangers, mets brewers, Phillies, braves, raised Padres, angels, Dodgers, and then the American WBC team followed closely by the Giants, the Blue Jays and the asters. So it's just, it's not the best. I think Brady singer has the best projection via the fan. Step charts of any starting pitcher on the American WBC team and Brady singer, I believe, has the 30th best starting pitcher projection of any pitcher. So that means that there are 29 starting pitchers with better projections and most of them are American. In fact, there are 24, I believe, American born pitchers, starting pitchers with better projections than Brady singer, who is, again, the best projected pitcher on this WBC roster. So the pitchers who have better projections who are not on this team, de Grom, burns, rodan, nola, Cole, Wheeler, Scherzer, Bieber, Verlander, Woodruff, mcclanahan, gausman, freed strider, cease, web, musgrove, Snell, Kershaw, la dolo, glass now, cab gallon and green. A lot of good pictures there, but none of them have the U.S. WBC roster. And you know, like a number of them in the cactus league, right? Who could just go down the way to chase for the early going and then hop on a flight to Florida after. So, you know, yeah. It's not the best. No, the hitters. On Team USA. Wonderful. Amazing. Yeah. But yeah, the pitching does leave a little something to be desired, but I have we talked about the hitting Ben. You know? Also, I would also just say that if Michael Bowman were on this podcast, he would fight you for besmirching his beloved landslide. We've had that fight before. It's a real love. It's true. It's true. Yeah. And it's not just the U.S. team that has this issue recruited pitchers because you look at the rotations for a lot of the other teams too, and they're not super strong. I mean, the Dominican roster is totally stacked too with position players, but the starting pitchers, you know, it's not deep, really, right? You've got sandy Alcantara who we're about to talk about and Christian Javier, but then it's like Rwanda Contreras and Johnny cueto, who were also about to talk about a teammate of sandia contrast, right? So it's tough. I mean, it's with the American team like there are a lot of pictures like Logan Webb, who expressed interest in being on the team at a certain point, but then ended up not being on it. And that's also the case with the other countries teams, you know? Like Luis Castillo and other pitchers who at one point seemed like they might be interested, but then ultimately are not participating. And there are various reasons for that with Kershaw, evidently, and some others also it's an insurance issue. Yeah, there's an LA times piece about this that I will link to if you're interested in the ins and outs of insurance, but according to this piece, the insurance coverage protects teams from having to pay a player for time missed because of an injury stemming from the tournament if an injury is determined to have happened in the WBC, then the team is reimbursed for the time the player misses. Participants are required to undergo entrance and exit physicals to help clean injury information. And so with a pitcher like Kershaw, who has had some chronic injury issues, they just couldn't get coverage, and I guess the Dodgers wouldn't just wave this. Miguel Cabrera ran into the same issue, but the tigers were just like, eh, he can go play. It's fine. But the toucher. So not so sanguine about Kershaw, I guess. And so there's this concern about injury risk in the WBC. And I don't know that there's great evidence for the fact that it makes you more likely to get hurt. I studied this back in 2017. I wrote an article about it and didn't really find any compelling evidence to that point that players who had participated in the WBC had suffered greater injury rates and there is another story at the same time that the wash U sports analytics group did that maybe found some slight effects, but nothing glaring and MLB for its part insists that there's nothing to it according to the LA times, MLB has compiled injury data from the first four WBC iterations, according to a league official, the data aren't publicly available, but the official maintained there is no correlation between being hurt and playing in the WBC. It's also an MLB's best interest to say that without sharing the data. But it's not totally clear that you go pitch in the WBC or more likely to get hurt because of course you can get hurt in spring training too, the idea is basically that maybe if you're just more into this tournament and you're throwing more max effort and you're not fully ramped up yet and it's a little more intense and perhaps high pressure than a spring training game and so you might be more likely to let it fly and hurt yourself and also you're away from your team's training staff and all of that and so perhaps you could be used in a certain way although I think the WBC managers are pretty careful to stick to whatever the prescribed

"Boone was on the Michael Kay show and I was asked the question whether or not the postponement will harm the Yankees in the series. Oh, I don't know. I mean, I think both teams have to deal with it. You got to deal with different things that come up all the time in the regular season and certainly in the postseason and how you handle those things. So we'll be ready to go tomorrow for an early one. Boone was asked about how much the loss of Scott frost will hurt his bullpen. Yeah, it was a surprise and a blow, no question. I think he was in a really important part of our bullpen and had dealt with the shoulder issue and came back and I thought I was going to play a big role for us. Definitely a blow and one that I feel really bad for him because I know how excited he was or is to be here and be a part of this team, but also I know how excited he was to go compete and play a meaningful role in our postseason and obviously that's going to go on hold. So we just try and kind of support him and know he's going to get right and better and it's an opportunity for someone else to pick up the slack. It was a week ago that a role is Chapman went AWOL and Boone talked about Chapman. Definitely disappointed. I don't know how difficult of a decision necessarily for me. One that I did mull over and really think about, but just felt like it wasn't a good enough excuse and kind of feel like whatever circumstances a player is dealing with at this time of the year, whatever kind of year you've had. We need all in or not. He was asked about how close he was to picking Nestor Cortes to start game one over Garrett Cole. No, I wouldn't say I was necessarily close. I would just say, I've said going into this postseason that I feel like obviously we're dealing with some injuries. We've lost some guys. We don't have some guys fully back. But one of the areas I feel really good about is our starting pitchers. And I feel like our three starters and I think even when you expand it to jmo and even Harmon, I feel like from a starting pitching standpoint, we match up really well with all the teams in the playoffs. I looked at it as kind of a good decision because of the year Nestor's quick forth because of how heavy all year and especially since he's come back off the IL. I just feel like we're working from a position of strength. So I just wanted to make sure that I didn't race to a decision. "Like, when one has engaged in behavior that other people don't like, and you know, other people aren't always right, but in this case they were. You know? It can be an uncomfortable process to reflect on that social feedback and be like, wow, you know, a lot of people sure didn't have my back on this, and that might indicate that this behavior was wanting in some way, and that I should reflect on how and then make different choices in the future. And normally that process is one that is done privately, right? When you're in the middle phases of change for yourself, you're like not keen to share them because you don't feel great when you're in the hospital faces. You're like, oh no. Am I the baddie? Right. And then hopefully you come out the other side being like, I reflected on that and like that behavior was not good and I should do something differently and also be sorry about having done it in the first place. So I guess it's kind of a bummer that the middle phase got aired because it suggests that the later phases might not be coming, but maybe we'll be wrong about that and wouldn't that be nice if Josh Jonathan continues to reflect on this incident and then things to himself. I shouldn't do that. Right. People don't like me. Yeah, he was close to an epiphany potentially there. You know, but you can lead the man in need of therapeutic to the couch but you can't make him sit down. I don't know. That might be overly familiar on my part. And maybe I'll reflect on that and think, I shouldn't have said that about judges and I don't know him, but he can lead them in to self actualization, but you can't turn on the epiphany on, I don't know. I'm struggling for an apt metaphor here, but drink the water, you're not a horse, but you know what I mean. So we talked about trout and as a number of people pointed out, if he actually is lacking in some way as a fantasy football commissioner, then one imagines he will come back next year in the upcoming football season and he will be the best possible fantasy football commissioner that he could be because we know that he always tends to target his weaknesses and turn them into strengths, but in other angels related news. Some people reached out to express some concern that maybe I had been present at the angels Yankees game on Thursday and I did actually have some designs on going to that game initially it was supposed to be a night game and Shohei Ohtani was scheduled to pitch against Nestor Cortes what a matchup. What a matchup and my wife and I were talking about going. It was going to be sort of a game time decision spur of the moment thing and we were a bit apprehensive because of our memorable experience at inky stadium last year, whereas some listeners were recall, our anniversary was coming up and shohei was in town and we splurged a little and got ourselves some fancy seats to see shohei and then he was completely terrible. He had the worst game of his MVP season and did not make it out of the first inning on the mound and then the rains came and it was just miserable. We actually went back later in the season to see him on a day when he wasn't pitching and he didn't really do anything as a hitter either. So my wife was worried that we had cursed him somehow and we were thinking of going back anyway hopefully to see him on a better day and then there was rain on Wednesday and the Yankees angels game was rescheduled and it became a split admission double header. So the poor people who had purchased tickets expecting to see Otani on Thursday night instead, things were switched so that Otani started the day game instead. So some people who probably were planning to go to C Otani missed out on Otani, I could not go because it was a day game and now I am kind of grateful that I didn't because it did not go well again. He did make it out of the first inning, at least, but he didn't make it much further than that. So I don't know if it's just randomness or if he has some hang up here, unfortunately he has not been at his best in New York lately and then there was rain and there was rain in the forecast and eventually The Rain came to. But not a great day for Otani, but I missed out at least on seeing him give up for over three innings and he just didn't have it and wasn't missing bats or anything. But bad timing. I'm actually going out to LA next week and he'll be back there, but I don't know if I will have time to catch him in person. Anyway, I bring that up just to mention that we got one ohtani related question, which I can answer now. This was a question from listener Jason, who wrote in after Wednesday's game to say this might be difficult for you to hear, but in the past two games against the angels Aaron judge has done something that I assume has never been done before in game one of the series he robbed what looked like a home run from Shohei Ohtani leaping at the center field wall to make a catch in game two judge hit a home run off of Otani in the third inning has a player ever robbed a home run and hit a home run against a single player, I would assume not, since ohtani is such a unicorn, not sure if this is researchable, but would love to find out if this has ever happened before. So this was a question for sports info solutions. Has home run robbery data going back to 2002 and SAS analyst Alex Specter min is a listener in Patreon supporters. So I sent it to him. I said this sounds like a job for sports info solutions. He wrote back and said, that does sound like a job for us. However, we do tend to be a bit of a buzzkill when it comes to home run robberies. You can see from one of the side angles later in the video and I will link to this that that probably wasn't going to be a home run the ball that ohtani hit that Aaron judge quote unquote robbed. It wasn't going to be a home run based on how steep it was coming down and the fact that judge got to it on his way up. So we don't have this as a home run robbery. And I applaud Alex and the SIS folks for being very rigorous when it comes to home run robbery classification. Yes. I love a good home run robbery and I've written articles in the past about how the fact that we had this high home run rate era recently. We also had high home run robbery rate era. We were seeing more home run robberies than ever, which I thought was a perk and upside of the ball flying as well as it was a couple of years ago.
