"Syrians and to be able to get a drop of a hat him last year. My mom was in town and like patrick. Harris was doing that night she was like. Let's go over there. And i was like mom like there's no way there's no way just that much this try and so we did we white one over there and hopton lineman's up getting in and like talk about like value of an ap stroll into epcot and see that It all tried i guess. Come on man. it's doogie howser singing about jesus. Here's the thing i've seen. So there's two ways that i've experienced when i believe i'm probably speaking for most people listening when i say this as that i've experienced in one is walking by and walking by suicide slowly as i can without getting yelled at gotta keep moving moving and then you too because i just have always been averse to waiting a long line and i don't plan ahead enough and dining package is worth doing the out a doubt to get a nice meal. You get a good seat right up in forty piece orchestra. If only there was somebody some lowly. When god willing comes back this year up i would like to see him. Patrick harris i love. Neil patrick harris with this is i mean. Everybody loves new. patrick arise. he's at disney man and he injects so much of his own personality into a two other than hindu. You anybody else that you've seen that you find is remarkably good. Darius versus is incredible. I think quarterly. Wait patrick harris because he like he. He participates like he's saying up. Full heart lake wholeheartedly. Like you can see like singing with the with the cast members dancing. A little triple threat triple threat. Yeah all right. I'll continue on with my random. Obscure nerdy trivia. As long as we're talking about battle star galactica connections. What battle star galactica cast member is a narrator of the candlelight processional as it edward james olmos edward. James olmos couldn't be learned green. Oh laurel green mazing bonanza. Maybe you did it back in the day. Who knows maybe so. Maybe so. So by before we i i don't are we finished with the performance thing. I believe killers one piece of music. And i know we gotta get to the crescendo here. But i know that there's one piece of music that i think we have to mention even though some of us might not want to because for those who may be whose first disney experience is happening right now during this weird time The cavalcade music of about cats will choke specific. That is a real thing and maybe too much of a real thing sometimes but it is. It is frequently happening. I'm you get different music. The different get the mickey and minnie cavalcade music. You have the princess music you have the the other one. The different ones right. There's the princess there's mickey minnie and then there's an industry anyway. There's different you have and i don't feel like they're not i mean there's the princess one is prince z. There's the i forget. The frozen moons and the frozen went clearly has the frozen music. But i don't feel the other two have music that's specific to it. Listen that's not recognizable to me. But i it's just interesting to think that this whether it continues or not there are going to be people years from now who think back to their early experiences and epcot and say remember the cavalcades their head that music and for them for some of them may be like this highlight experience. Because you do get these this unique character. Interaction per se that you otherwise never got in along the prominent there. We'll showcase happening until someone says ma'am you need to move aside into like. Oh that's the music okay. So it's just in. But i look i'm a fan of the cavalcades and there's a part of me that hopes that they remain even when fire a when parades come back because it is it. Is these almost unexpected. Little surprise enough to ship rates. You not necessarily the lineup. For but i never thought about in terms of the music. Other than sort of just queuing the fact that that it comes by yes. The first grade is the first time that we've seen parades or whatever in epcot since Tapestry of nations tapestry of dreams left. And so i think for a lot of people this is that their first time seeing something like that you know i think like a couple years ago. We may be mentioned. You know like look at all these crowds. That have grown last few years with festivals. And such like. There's no way that they can have a parade come through here now but we're seeing them do it successfully beautifully You know like you toes every once in a while but yeah they got push her back but the music just comes out of nowhere sometimes it hits you in the face and hey the it's coming and then it goes and you're still hearing it. It's very very Blender full cleanup caught it's joyful and triumphant and let you know that something's happening. I love the cavalcades too. And i think that i think the experiences One that's worth keeping i just didn't epcot. I would switch. They would just turned down a little bit. Okay let's move from the music of the pavilions specifically to something. I know that when i first brought up the idea of the music of epcot center to you you all i think in internally focused on fireworks and shows and parades and you know we'll get to illuminations but there have been a lot before zach. You mentioned the cavalcades in terms of not having anything like that since tapestry. And i'm so happy brought it up. Because tapestry of nations and tapestry of dreams was one of my favorites elements of epcot. It was the third and final parade that was ever in epcot and other than the cavalcades. I don't expect it will ever see something like that again. I don't think we'll get a full blown parade like that. Because of how crowded the prominent is so many of the fest. I mean there's really festival going on all the time but tapestry of nations and then tapestry of dreams was this very long very beautiful Parade included floats. And puppets that were designed by michael curry. Who did lion king on broadway as well as the shows for the theme parks including legend of the lion king and it was written by gavin greenaway. Who was actually suggested to disney. By hans zimmer handsomer couldn't or wouldn't do it and suggested gavin greenaway to create this beautiful musical parade that was very interactive and and going into the details of the parade almost could be and maybe it should be a separate discussion conversation but because of how unique it was how interactive it was and that it was one that stopped and started very much involved guests including and especially children in terms of interacting with the sage of time etc. But one of the things that was interesting about the music of this which has always been and continues to be one of my favorite loops ever of of all the disney loops and this is one that you know quote unquote existed on. My ipod used to have to download music. It was recorded at abbey road which knows with the beatles recorded their songs and the lyrics are actually. I think if you've heard the song and if you're like me put the windows down in your car and you try to sort of make up what you think. The lyrics are.

"How old is the house. Nineteen zero five. Wow i it's been everything from a speakeasy for mill workers to a music school for girls to a single person occupancy and when you think it was a brothel is just wishful began to wonder where in this five storey house. Would we have our talks. Who's the decorator. David has better taste than i do. So if we ever have disagreements about Interiors it usually comes from a financial standpoint in that. I tend to say dude. We have dogs and two small children. We don't need a forty billion dollar rug. So you're the sort of decorator in your the accountant. Then they led me into their red velvet screening room with rows of quickly theater seats. Just like an old hollywood. What a fitting place to chat with these two actors. What kind of marriages did your parents have. My parents were together until my mom passed away years ago. And your parents. My parents are still married. And they've celebrated fifty plus years of marriage so they've always been only together with each other so because you were gay. Did you think you wouldn't have that. I thought that i was going to be alone or single for most of my adult life. But i had a random path from adolescence into adulthood because i ended up being on a television show when i was fifteen years old and so all pre puberty through puberty. When you're figuring out what turns you on i was. I felt a bit under a microscope of television. And so i didn't have the freedom to randomly hit on somebody or go to a bar. So i i was by myself a lot and had a fantastic group of friends in los angeles. Who knew everything about me. But i just i just wasn't dating. I had never even showered with another person till i was in my late twenties so it was all new to me. And what about you. Deeming i you know. I didn't know what i wanted to. Until sort of i got into college and then after college living in new york i you know i saw lots of different relationships than men having babies and having a family so i i always knew that i was going to settle down and be with someone and stay with someone and have a family and kids. Once we started dating. We never really stopped so we didn't date lots of people while we were dating each other and then decide. We just started dating moved in together. And we've been together ever since same. Sex marriage wasn't legal at that time and and it seemed like a potential but not an inevitability and so we were more conscientious of what wording we used to call each other. I just didn't like the word partner for some reason i just. I still think that's a very strange way to it. Eliminates any sense of lava lover of or some only rome antic lake invasive of your life lover eighties and boyfriends very juvenile was forty calling. Fill my boyfriend and to seems like it's short lived like we've just met together for years. So is it better half and then and then once the marriage thing happened it happened very quickly but we didn't want to get married because it was suddenly allowed to get married. We wanted to get married to get because we wanted to get jeweler already in a committed relationship correct and that was and did you get kids. I just didn't want to go to the courthouse. With a with a hundred other people and people holding up signs and other people picketing and refers i. It's an. I don't want to get married in context owning remember with my family right in italy when it's legal and it's not a big deal. The nice thing about destination wedding as you can easily reduce the number of people. You've been very small weddings. Only forty seven people. We've got married with thirty five and it wasn't a great wonderful. The nice thing about talion wedding or a any italian trip is that everything is so delicious there. Yeah and what we're was testing this rueda. Yeah the mountains in a one of the things that i've noticed because we've been married forty years. Do you count from the day that you started dating or from your barrier wedding. We're counting from the day we got married. We met three years before but we knew immediately. I mean we. We fell them up. We went we went to dinner. We went to bed. That was it was it. That's because we're gay. We count from the day a reverse day because then you add ten years dog enga- years fifty years. We've been together.

So yeah, it's very exciting. We're going to go through Christmas into the new year and then potentially the next HEDWIG will be announced. All kinds of fantasies of you know it'd be fun. They imagine this going on for quite a while I'm just having a new person coming in fill it. As long as it never gets below like seventy percent in the in the New York Broadway building you're in trouble who would you like to see do it because I mean it seems like it's like a factory for lack of its and what right now Paul's drag race. Winner. I had a really interesting choice but Justin Vivian Bond. And could you imagine the do Tommy noses cities I mean 'cause I think she's transition now but it might be complicated i. know that a girl did it and she wore she strapped down for that scene and more like a little punk team. Actually I think Justin Vivian Bond would actually do quite a while there was rumors that actually jinx monsoon was going to take for the role, but she's not you're saying that she might not be. Big, enough of a box office draw. I think it'd be a lot of pressure on her I mean she might be able to do a limited run but. You know it's just about filling those seats and even times square kind of really WanNa start these days especially a one man show it better. Be Somebody that thousands of people? No not. You know. It's going to be real surprised that I imagine it'll be another Broadway man that wants to just like dive Divan because it's really hard. It leaves you exhausted I mean doing that show seven times a week on six days. All in. Eighty eight and you'll have this special deal that we only worked at the theater Five days a week instead of six days a week but he did double shows that we had a five show weekend. And we had a seven and we had the ten o'clock show. which was really wild. We don't really have that anymore. Regular eight o'clock show. But seven and ten on Saturday with Neil. Would be sold out completely people going nuts everybody raising their hand. It was like crazy concert you know working with him is like working with Charlie Chaplin or something just mobs of fans out there. So is there an understudy for the role? Like is this backstage? Do we have any shenanigans like we see in the movie showgirls? the only Lena has an under study. Okay. Lena's the actress who plays Tommy Notice. These socks. Yeah See. It's right. Which Lena getting so much exposed right now that you know she takes she can take a lead here and there from the show. Let her swing. "It's here now Neil Patrick Harris is such a dear friend the way I don't know him at all but like a lot of us I feel like I do from the childhood doctor Doogie Howser to Barney Stinson and how I met your mother to possibly everyone's favorite award show host and now author of the popular young adult series the magic misfits about a rag tag gang of self described outsider kids who bond over the love of magic and of course the fight the villains trying to take over the otherwise Dilek resort town where they live but in between escapades we the reader get magic lessons yes for instance we finally learn how a magician knows which card you pick from the pack because Neil Patrick Harris's like a pro the third book in the series is titled the magic misfits the minor third and Neil Patrick Harris when we read it it sounds like you your voice you having a blast with this gang of off be kids what is this about beside your love of magic. well my path has led me in very interesting and disparate ways in my career and my life you think and I've gotten to who act and on stage and act on television and in films like on to direct Magic shows I've gotten two hosts shows gun to have children and reading and literacy it and literature and the tactile book has always been something that's been really important to me growing up and as a parent even more so so I think because they have such weird likes that kind of run all over the place putting together a middle grade fiction series was Zach Lee where my brain off and sets it allowed I had just finished and was doing a series of unfortunate events Daniel handlers series that he penned as lemony Snicket and I recognized his ability to not only tell very thrilling story but to be able to impart interesting sentence structure and a sense of humor and of vocabulary so there was some education involves and so this is sort of my take on that I know magic I live in a world hoping that its immersive theater and that it's David Fincher's the game and I can some some somehow someone's gonna pull me aside and say quick we need your help you have to unlock this door using this combination and there's a secret staircase and inside we had an envelope and I'll be marked and and more instructions to come that's how I would love my life to live and so this is kind of the the that my version of that for for you know intelligence. who knew we just see was walking around looking pleasant but inside her head. all of this is going on in your going to leap in and save the day and I just you know the kids are a diverse group there's a girl in a wheelchair someone's African American someone grew up in a broken home lives with his cousin who has two dads you're celebrating possibility and reality for kids and while that's intentional for those that haven't read the first two books it's not something that I wanted to do and have it be the moral of the story right act what I think is nice about this reading level is that you can teach and your teaching of group who are very anxious to be individuals and also to fit in right so it's a great duality is a complicated one because you don't want to be singled out because it's embarrassing because you want to fit in but you don't want to just be one of many because you're special and unique and you want to stand out and so magic is a great opportunity to to teach a hobby that that sort of is that yeah magic by design is is not the football player hand and group sports it's a little more introspective you have to practice and you have to study it and then you get to perform at its a little potentially embarrassing to be performing in front of other people but then you have potentially magical skills that people are impressed by and so if you can do that and also have the the individual dynamics of the very unique in their own way but all of that is sort of couched in a sense of normalcy these are the facts we're not gonna sit too deep in the fact that lay low the escape artist girl is I was adopted we learn about her adoption and how she came to be through the plot of the story but it's not a story about adoption and what it means to have not had birth parents I did a thing which it since it's for books and there's force you to attack and I love. each book looks like playing card if you look at it with it on and so the first book is involves diamonds because the protagonist Carter meets this group in this town called mineral wells and there's a giant diamonds that's on display and as a carnival boss the boss so is trying to steal some diamonds in the second book in the second suit is about clubs and so it involves Layla whose escape artist lives with Mister Vernon the magic shop owner and his husband the other Mister Vernon and they learn that there's a a larger club that Mister Vernon was once a part of called the emerald ring so the third book that's just coming out is based on hearts center Theo Steinmeyer is a violinist and a prodigious one at that you can also use violin bow to make things levitate yes and so he's having to follow his heart now in this book and figure out where his passions lie well how much fun and also how much magic so let's just do one okay so if you have a pack of cards you memorize the card on the bottom you call it the key card key card mensa full shore and then you split the pack still knowing where the one on the bottom is that you know you fan the pack out in would you tell us how to do this you fan out and and someone takes a card. well I will say this as a magician long time member of magical groups of the academy of magical arts lessons of the cameras enough hearts of where the magic castle is for three years I would be remiss to on national public radio and expose how a magic trick is accomplished but I will say that there are techniques and your listeners will probably have already sort of figure out what a key card principle would be where you can you don't have to necessarily know what say the top card of the day is a few may have taken a peek at the bottom card and then say look to cut the deck you might be able to ascertain what the card either below or above it could potentially exactly that is brilliant and messy but here's the thing about magic right so that's the explanation of the trick but if someone were to do a trick and just say that take a card put on the top of the deck them to cut the cards immensely but over in fan through him was this your card it's not an incredibly impressive trick so part of what is fun about magic is the creation of the effect around that pretty simple idea I I I love the one about how to levitate a piece of bread forks are involved I'll just say that well how did you get into this I grew up in a small town in New Mexico and I grew up in a time when there wasn't a lot to do but watch TV and and I grew up in a time when Doug Henning was still doing yearly magic specials and David Copperfield who make the statue of liberty disappear walk through the great wall of China he would make a dent in the orient express train car that surrounded by people holding hands and covered with a cloth levitate and then vanish and I was riveted to the TV but I didn't quite know how to do it I would go to the library and I would I would I would get books and and read them and learn how to do card tricks and things but of the proper packet tricks and things that use props I didn't quite understand until I got to outlook. Ricky and there was a magic shop called fools paradise and and I was just smitten it a I I got to say of my allowance and I could make choices and then on the ride home I would open up the instructions and that's the only way you can learn the secret the principles behind it are psychological in many ways and required persistence perseverance practice and I just think it's a great variety art to not lose and so I go out of my way to. produced promotes and attend and and and shine the spotlight on to Magica magicians and shared in your book so now we all know how you can make a card rise in the palm of your hand I'm telling you that's cheating I'm not gonna get away with it was but I'm sure you've been asked about this the acting is magic and acting is make believe there's a big connection between magic and acting and I think similarly there's magic in a lot of the things that we just do in our in our day to day interactions because if you think about it when you're watching a man a magician perform a trick he's explaining the facts of what's happening pick a card you can put it in the deck also for the deck the card is lost in the deck I'm gonna make it appear in an interesting way but those are facts that he's just explaining to you those may not be the actual facts right and so in in acting there are facts of a script but you're able to act around it and and and fill it in there are facts of things that happen and it's our jobs as humans to process what those facts mean to you and and embellish upon it that is actor singer producer writer. father has been magician Neil Patrick Harris the laser and plate spinner VS. how does he do it all the latest book in his young adult magic misfits series is for the minor third he'll thank.
