"And in April was one of the only streamers to see month to month growth, per Nielsen. More and more viewers are tuning into YouTube on the biggest screen in their home, said YouTube CEO, Neil Mohan, calling it a seismic shift in the way people watch video content. Viewers especially younger viewers no longer make a distinction between the kind of content they're watching. When they turn on the TV, they want everything they love in one place from their favorite creators to blockbuster movies to football, and they can find it all on YouTube. And formerly YouTube's chief product officer, assume the top job after Susan wojcicki stepped aside earlier this year. The upfront presentation also highlighted YouTube's exclusive rights to NFL Sunday ticket out of market games package, starting with the 2023 football season, making an appearance to push the pact was NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, joined by college football player turned YouTuber de string. Goodell revealed that the YouTube NFL partnership will enlist MrBeast, the number one individual creator on YouTube with a 153 million subscribers to create behind the scenes football content. More data on this real quick, Netflix said it's ad tier has nearly 5 million global monthly active users with a median age of 34. This comes only 6 months after launching this tier. Netflix has been mom on how many subscribers the ad tier has, previous reports had pegged it at about 1 million, but the monthly active users metric is a step in that direction. And co CEO Greg Peters noted that more than a quarter of sign ups in countries where the ad plan is available, choose it with levels of engagement similar to those of its ad free tiers. The signals are promising, engagement on our ads plan is similar to our comparable non ads plans, Peters, said, that's critical because it all starts and ends with consumers. Indeed, Netflix still dominates most streaming ratings, charts, and the company says its users watch for longer than competitors as well. Here are some numbers that I've been wondering about as well. When a crypto exchange or fund or service or project or whatever blows up, how much can be recovered in terms of assets. I do suppose it would be on a case by case basis, but here's some specific data. Voyager says it expects to recover around 35% of users crypto deposits as a U.S. judge approves its liquidation plan, letting the company return around $1.33 billion in crypto assets. If Voyager fully prevails in the FTX litigation, customers expected recovery would rise to 63.74% according to Voyager's court filings, Voyager intends to repay customers with the same type of cryptocurrency they had in their accounts. For deposit held in unsupported cryptocurrencies that can not be withdrawn from Voyager's platform and for voyagers proprietary VGX token, Voyager will instead repay customers using the stablecoin USD C Voyager was one of several crypto lenders to file for bankruptcy in 2022 after a boom in the COVID-19 pandemic. Others were Celsius network, BlockFi and genesis global capital. And more interesting numbers, though, these are not good. Apparently, Amazon so far has made just 100 prime air drone deliveries after previously projecting it would make 10,000 U.S. deliveries in 2023. Wing in comparison has made 330,000 deliveries and zipline has made 600,000. Quoting CNBC, where Amazon has stalled other companies drone programs have seen greater traction, particularly those that started outside of the regulatory confines of the U.S.. CNBC visited wing a subsidiary of Google parent Alphabet and a drone test facility in Hollister, California. At one point, there were 37 drones in the air at once making demo deliveries. "YouTube says premium users are the only ones who can initiate in Google Meet, but anyone including non subscribers can view. Another new feature provides more controls over your queue when subscribed to YouTube premium, starting today premium users will be able to add videos to their queue when watching on phones and tablets, while today YouTube free users can save videos to playlists, including watch later, queuing lets users control what video they want to play next during their current viewing session and quote. I will say that's a feature that sort of exists for free users on devices like chromecast. So if it sounds familiar to you, that may be why. This version apparently works within the app itself. Tech crunch also points out that adding more features will help market the subscription to consumers who generally don't know that premium provides anything beyond just removing the ads. And while that's enough to sway many people, the subscription also gives you access to YouTube music premium, offline downloads, and background play for watching when your screen is locked. All features I will add that are particularly helpful if you watch or listen to podcasts via YouTube, which is a vertical YouTube is finally starting to pour some real energy and features into. Interesting reply to YouTube CEO Neil Mohan's announcement of these features from YouTube creator westy on Twitter quote in the future, could we get a feature like Twitch prime, a free membership to a channel each month as part of each premium subscription would be great added value for subscribers to support their favorite channels. "Earliest days at Google. Susan wojcicki history with Google goes back to its founding. She famously rented out the garage of her Silicon Valley house to Larry Page and Sergey Brin. The idea of people starting a company in a garage in Silicon Valley is a cliche and usually isn't true, but this one is true. I bought a house and houses are really expensive and Silicon Valley, and I was a student, and so I wanted someone to help me pay the mortgage. And she joined a year later, after renting out the garage, became the 16th employee at Google. If you don't think about how big Google is and how much money the people who started at Google made, you can both understand that she's made a lot of money in her career and also that she's had a lot of influence at that company if she's there at the start. You were Google 16th employee, first marketing manager, you worked on Google doodles, Google images. Google books, you built the ad business, how many hats have you worn in 18 years? You know, I think when you join a startup, you just sort of have to be willing to do whatever the startup needs you to do. So Google's main money machine is something called AdWords, that's when you go and type a query into Google and spits out results, people are bidding on those results. She didn't create that, but she built out a significant chunk of the rest of Google's ads business, display ads when you go to another website that isn't Google. You see an ad served up by Google, she built that out in large part. It's a huge business. From 2015 until 2021, every second dollar spent on online ads was spent on Google and meta Google earned 200 and $9 billion in ad revenue in 2021 alone making it the largest advertising company in the world. In 2014, she became CEO of YouTube. And at the time it was a big business, it was probably about a $5 billion business, but it still was a sidelight for Google and it wasn't really clear how YouTube fit into Google. They bought it a decade earlier, not quite for $1.65 billion. It's a huge thing in the Internet, a huge thing in video. It wasn't quite clear how seriously Google took it. And I think by moving her in there because she was a respected executive at the time that was them saying, we think this business can get a lot bigger. We think it'd be good to be run by someone with real business and advertising experience and she was that person. Why was she so good at it? What did she do exactly? There's a couple different things. First of all, the guy who'd run YouTube before Susan wojcicki had been I think the 9th employee at Google and he's a classic Googler he is an engineer by trade, classically not a glad hander, didn't really want to look at you would rather look at a laptop. I had that experience a few times. Just not someone that is going to spend a lot of time interfacing with people who buy and sell advertising, people who create videos and upload them to YouTube, not that Kai. Susan wojcicki by Hollywood or New York media standards also not a dazzling sparkling personality. But by Google standards, she's a pretty media savvy person. And is happy or at least willing to go talk to advertisers to go to New York and talk to publishers. And crucially to be the face of YouTube to its creators, which became an increasingly important role. Good evening, VidCon. It is great to be here and to see everyone what kinds of audience. Policies did she institute at YouTube. So the main thing she had to do was sort of handle YouTube, which is this really unruly beast. Anyone can upload a video to YouTube and early in YouTube's career they made an important policy decision which said, look, if you upload video to YouTube and we sell advertising against it, we're going to give you about half that money. It was a big deal. It remains a big deal YouTube still really the only company that allows creators to do that directly, which is why a lot of creators still are making stuff for YouTube instead of TikTok or Instagram. Even though those sites may be buzzi or have more reach in certain places, creators who are never going to make money some other ways are suddenly dependent on YouTube. And it's sort of oblique algorithm to figure out whether they're making money or not. And then people start abusing YouTube too. It happens with any platform of any size on the Internet. If you can upload stuff, people are going to upload unpleasant stuff. It created something called the adpocalypse in 2017, 2018. Some inflammatory articles are posted about how major brands are being advertised on top of. Very vile YouTube videos. A bunch of advertisers fearing backlash remove their ads entirely from YouTube. And during this period, every YouTuber saw a decrease in revenue. In that case, it was a big enough that advertisers boycotted YouTube temporarily and she had to negotiate all of that as well. I think the creator community send ups as an understand some of the fragility with the advertisers and we've been working really, really hard to bring back all of our advertisers after brand safety and make sure they feel confident and keep spending. What do you think her legacy is going to be? I mean, to put it in business terms, that's the ones that I'm in some ways most comfortable talking about. It's probably a $5 billion business when she took it over and it's a $29 billion business now. It's a big enough business that Google and this is for accounting nerds. Breaks out the business when it talks to Wall Street and says, this is a big important part of our business. This is a 10% of our business. That didn't happen for a long time, but it's something now that when it wants to tell Wall Street, this is how well we're doing, they'll point to YouTube in the growth they're doing there. And again, it's easy to dismiss YouTube or ignore it, especially if you're an older person who isn't spending a lot of time on the Internet. It's incredibly important culturally. I think it's really overlooked by a lot of people. It's the biggest video site in the world. It's the second largest search engine in the world. For a lot of people, YouTube is the Internet, and Susan wojcicki ran YouTube for 9 years. Why is she stepping away? She put on a memo to the staff, which would then help you see them reproduced around the world, said she's leaving for family health and personal projects, two of those words are sort of standard when people leave a company and go on to do something else. Generally they don't mention health. So you can draw an inference from that if you want beyond that, I don't know. Okay, so who's going to replace her? Who is this woman who's replacing her? It's a man. No. Peter, I'm sorry, I'm kidding. Go ahead. Who is this fella? This fellow's named Neal Mohan. It's great to be back at VidCon to celebrate its tenth anniversary with all of you here. Think of him as the vice president to Susan Jessie's president. They have a long, long relationship, Neil Mohan helped build that ad business with Susan wojcicki at Google and about a year after she came to run YouTube, she brought him out and basically her number two. Like Susan wojcicki, this is someone who's comfortable with the advertising and media part of the business, which is crucial. Everything we do is aimed at lifting up our creators. And YouTube TV will also get the ability to view multiple NFL Sunday ticket games at once. The verge's Alex heath reports meta shared its AR and VR road map with employees. According to the road map, the quest three headset will come out later this year, claiming to be two times thinner twice as powerful and slightly more expensive than the quest two with a smart guardian feature to guide users through mixed reality experiences. In 2024, meta will ship a more accessible headset code named Ventura, which it hopes will pack the biggest punch we can at the most attractive price point in the consumer VR market. This would be followed up by at la Jolla headset way out in the future, aiming to provide photo realistic avatars. On the AR front, it plans to release a second generation of its camera equipped ray ban glasses this fall. In 2025, it plans to ship smart glasses with a viewfinder display and a neural interface band to support hand gestures, a companion smartwatch could also come out at that time. Susan wojcicki, who was, I think the 16th employee at Google has been running YouTube for a long time. She is stepping down. She'll be replaced by her longtime lieutenant according to recode Neil Mohan. In a letter sent to an YouTube employees wajiki said she was leaving in order to I want you guys to tell me what this means because between the lines or something here, start a new chapter, focused on my family, health, and personal projects I'm passionate about. Pushed out, pushed out or wants to spend more time with her money, which is it? I don't know. Yeah. I don't think she would always have YouTube. This has been one of the few real successes at Google. I think after a certain amount of time, you really do just get tired. That's my guess. When you vest enough shares to have, oh, I don't know, $500 million, why would you work? Or maybe she also knows that something's coming down the road. Let's say the YouTube. There you go. Bad news like TikTok and everything. It's going to really start to eat into them. And so she's like, I'm just getting out now. I think that's why Cheryl Sandberg left Facebook. I think Sheryl Sandberg definitely saw it coming and said, we'll get out of here before it's too late. Well, if you share, I was like, why deal with it anymore? And you made your life and career. And there was a point where we talked about her running for president and then Cambridge Analytica and Trump and everything else happened. Just go and spend time with your she just got married, spend time with your husband. Why stress when you could just chill? You're a startup guy though, right? So people try it. Yeah, so this is my question for you, Ben, because you're a serial entrepreneur. You're the kind of guy that doesn't relax and take the money and go to the beach. You keep doing the next thing, right? This is the existential question of every entrepreneur. I think look, the reason why you would do it another thing is because there's a mission like, okay, there's a default of like, okay, chill, if I make the FU money, whatever you want to call that number. Yeah. But then I figure out the cure for cancer. Yeah, I'm going to go and do that because that is like a life issue and I'm going to go change people's lives. You truly believe what you're doing is going to transform people's lives for the rest of time. You're going to give up whatever personal thing in favor as an entrepreneur in favor of the rest of the world. But I know some entrepreneurs, I'll give you one example. MySpace Tom friend. He gave me MySpace. He cashed in, didn't he? And he goes on the beach. He's like hanging out in Hawaii. He's having the best time ever. He's the happiest person I know. He came up here with Trey and we went out for tacos. As a picture of me walking with MySpace Tom over to mcnear's, we had their Korean tacos. He said they were the best street tacos he'd had outside of LA. And then went back to his mansion in LA. He's like travels the world. Does photography? I think that's why I was hanging out with Trey. He has all the time in the world. I remember one time. The first time I met him, we spent three and a half hours just chatting over tea at a coffee shop in Brentwood. You know, if you've sold your company, you don't care anymore, and you just want to hang out, that's what you get to do. But he's unusual, right? He's the east exception. You could also point out that maybe he's never the entrepreneur type. I don't think he was saying got into it. Lucked out, but he just decided that he does want that lifestyle where some people are really into it. That's what they live to do. Right. I mean, I know so many people like our friend Louise lemur, who just can't sit still, right? It's just got to do the next thing. Everybody, by the way, who has ever on MySpace knows who Tom is, because he's your first friend. He was the guy looking over his shoulder at the blackboard. Because that was the picture. That was how little MySpace was. So anyway, Susan wojcicki got into the whole thing by renting her garage to Larry and Sergey in 1998 when they were starting Google. Huh? Classic story. It's a great story to garage. Let's be honest. They started at Stanford Stanford still gets a lot of money from every year. They started at Stanford, but then at some point they said, well, we want to do our own business, so we got to move out of Stanford. Hey, look, over here, somebody's got a garage. And then Susan wojcicki, her sister, and runs 23andMe. Her mom is very, I think, very involved in community stuff. They're an interesting family that would just.

"TikTok has announced TikTok trivia a live streamed trivia quiz with a $500,000 prize pool, hosted daily between February 22nd and February 26th, open to U.S. users age 18 and older. Yes, this should remind you of that old trivia game headquarters. Quoting the verge. Categories include lifestyle beauty, sports, and music, according to TikTok along with John Wick questions, the event is sponsored by lionsgate, and its upcoming film John Wick chapter four. Like headquarters, TikTok has enlisted a live host for trivia, presumably to make the quizzes more of an event. James Henry a popular TikTok creator who's regularly go viral on the platform will host the trivia rounds and players will be able to interact with him, TikTok says. Though the trivia series is a step out of TikTok's usual offerings, the company has been testing and working on different ways it might use the TikTok live feature to generate engagement. The company encourages businesses and creators to go live on the app to quote engage with their communities and markets live streams as a way to drive sales. It's also introduced more advanced settings for targeting such as giving streamers the ability to limit live videos to adults only. And the company has been trying to make live stream shopping happen in the U.S. after finding success with the format in China and other parts of Asia. Work came late yesterday that YouTube CEO Susan wojcicki plans to step down after 9 years heading that service to be replaced by Neil Mohan as senior vice president and head of YouTube.

This one I think merits more than a lightning round just because of the headline that it is. But then it does not. YouTube CEO Susan wojcicki stepping down after 9 years CEO of YouTube. What a lap. Do a victory lap season. She's like a major force in this world. Yes. She took YouTube, which was like not a great business. She's one of the earliest Google employees. She took YouTube, which is not a great business and turned it into this absolute powerhouse. Absolute Goliath. It is remains, I think, the gold standard for every creator. There's lots of creators on Twitter and other places today saying, you know, we have our complaints about YouTube and boy do they have their complaints about YouTube. But it is the platform that treats us the best. Right. I think Mark has had a tweet that's like, just look at compare. YouTube has creator plaques and events and monetization schedules and reps. And then he was like, Instagram, nothing. TikTok, nothing. Twitter, nothing. YouTube is a powerhouse. So kind of amazing. She's stepping down. There's a little bit of color Mark Bergen has a great reporter. Like Bloomberg has been tweeting a little bit of color. She's dipped in the past few months. No one's really seen her. Yeah. No one's really understood this transition. Oh, that's not great. But it has been 9 years and she's being replaced by her own handpicked deputy Neil Mohan, who was the chief product officer of YouTube, but now importantly, not becoming the CEO of YouTube. He's becoming the senior vice president of YouTube reported institute. Oh, interesting. That's an org chart. You know how. I was about to say this piqued you, huh? You were like, oh. Yeah, there's obviously some drama here. Yeah. It's not a lot of drama because I know Neil Neil has been on decoder many times. I actually just talked to Neil after they did the Sunday ticket deal for YouTube TV. He was very happy. He won. I don't think you're going to see a lot of change between Susan O'Neal. Like they were pretty lockstep. YouTube actually really interesting or chart thing. Neil head of product, YouTube's content moderation and trust and safety reports to him. Is the head of product. Weird. Because they've built it as a product. They think it's a product. This is my whole thing about content moderation is the product. It's a built into YouTube as a product. It doesn't report to legal or Mark Zuckerberg or whatever it is. Just mark for some reason. Just that part of YouTube, Mark handles. No, at Facebook. At the end of the day, like mark made a bunch of decisions. Right. Like everything goes up to a bar. Yeah, this one was like, it's product. And Susan made a bunch of those decisions too. But it's always just one of them are unique parts of YouTube structure. And now he's in charge. Yeah. Do you think he didn't get the title because she was an early employee of Google. She put a lot of time and energy into Google for years. It made sense to bake her CEO and now the structures, everything's changed. It makes sense. You just have that person report directly to Sundar and that's it. Yeah, I don't know. I mean, again, I wasn't hard short conversation. She was the CEO of YouTube before Sundar Pichai became CEO of Google. So there's Larry and Sergey, they start Google in her garage. She becomes a CEO of YouTube, and then they're like, Larry Page is like, we're dipping screw this. We're just going to do flying car startups or whatever it is they do. As soon as the CEO of Google. So she predated Sundar as the CEO of YouTube before he became the CEO of Google. And then he became the CEO of Alphabet. And so she reported to him when he became CEO of Alphabet. No, CF Google. So YouTube is a weird thing. It's part of Google, which is part of alphabet. But it's still part of Google. But it's still YouTube. But it's its own little island. It's a very confusing. Super confusing. So now Neil is in charge. Again, you can go listen to Benny decoder episodes with Neil man. He's smart. He's got a lot of ideas. He will not answer when YouTube TV will be in four K, just very good. Please answer. Sometimes I hit the brick wall of someone's media training on decoder. And that's the wall. Straight up, I found it. There it is. I bounce right off it and try to try again. Anyone you ask, what about YouTube TV in four K? They're like, no. Yeah, just the shades come down. They've decided, yeah, he's like, I don't have an answer, but no. When we talked about when they did the Sonny ticket deal, I was like, all right, are you going to do football in four K? Like you had to know this conversation? You volunteered to talk to me. Yeah, it has to. How can we talk about it? And he was like, I can't ask that question. So he was prepped to say that. One time, this is true. One time I just sent him an email. Watching the NBA Finals, sponsored by YouTube TV. And I was like, why don't you just pay to do this in four K and have it exclusive? And he was just like, yeah, it's a good idea. Goodbye. Absolutely. You have been a bad thing. Anyway, I'm hoping to talk to Neil soon about his plans. I guess I suspect things will be, these are two people who worked in lockstep for many, many years. Whatever Neil's plans were were Susan's plans for a long time. But it is fascinating that I think for Google, the threats are all over the place. Whatever you think of the Bing threat. It is a real threat. It wiped a $100 billion off its market cap last week. The idea that search will change, not just because people might switch to think because they want to bang the robot. But TikTok. But they're spending their time on TikTok. They're using search there. And then what chat GPT has really done is to cost to generate an infinite amount of mediocre text is now zero. So Google is being flooded with garbage. And they've got to sort that out too. And so that's a big problem for Google. And then YouTube is fine. It's solar gold center for creators. But it has to fend off TikTok. It has to create new monetization models for creators. It has to the most exciting part of YouTube is it's cable network. Yeah. It's weird. It's cable system. Like YouTube TV, that's weird. It's an interesting timing for her to make this move. I think not only because of the length of time that she's been with YouTube with Google and it has been doing all these things. And now they're facing these problems. I find it interesting and I don't think that these things are directly related because it feels like this is something that has been in works for at least a little while. And as you said, does she and Neil are kind of on the same page in terms of what they're doing.

"Bloomberg world headquarters I'm Denise Pellegrini Bank of America gearing up to cut jobs. Sources say possibly about 200 positions in investment banking and senior analysts, Allison Williams says the bank is running into some trouble.
