"A little bit of both there I do think that we're GONNA in ten fifteen years look back on teams that were punting on fourth and one and saying why are. You giving up the ball in the same way destroy couple years ago Neil Hornsby for football focus for this and I said, what is what is the bunt of football and what I mean by that is money ball like the first thing that went was like we're getting outs for no reason right and you're just giving up possession you win with possession and again time possessions over a lot stuff. But if you can keep drives alive, do it and you can do that with really efficient. Fourth and two, four, three or four four plays and I think that's that's what's going to happen and quarterbacks get more efficient as more mobile can scramble across the board and I think that. I it. We're GONNA look back on the Sarah Football and laugh even the week consider it. You know kind of. Innovative. Now, it's it's GonNa be nothing in ten fifteen years and then This is a big thing for our colleague Warren Sharp passing on first down I think that you will just have much more passing on first down and the running game will be i. don't think they WANNA game go way and I think that there are certain principles of the run game and the blocking, and you know jumbo packages and all that I think that stuff matters. I also think that part of the the reason this. Has To be kind of deeply philosophical is because the pendulum swings so lodge Sakho while defenses get small. So now you're on jumbo packages at them, but then throw out a heavy all that stuff right and so I think that that's how that's just sort of how football works is something happens defenses reacting than the offense has changed, but I think that the the the throwing and the fourth downs are the two things that will at some point be completely reversed. All right tomorrow's Click Bait Nora I. Think. WE'RE GONNA start we're going to start seeing some hints that. The Lincoln Riley is of the world are getting some calls. I'm in agreement with that I think that. Was the Chiron the Chiron is. Skin. GonNa say feel like the the problem right now is there's no buzzy Otake, the teams that I mentioned against the jets the jets are being adds no, that's what I was. Going to be like jets reportedly interested in Lincoln. Riley and then maybe maybe it snowballs a little bet and. Maybe. We're tracking some some private flights and CNN anyone's had to Oklahoma, and. Just, putting feelers out there I feel like that. That's going to start this week. I feel like the private like the feelers that might be that might be like October fifteenth or something like that will say the Colorado Develops I. Think we're GONNA see. Really funny. And again I? I. Did a little bit earlier but I was also it's not second guessing because I wrote at the time and said at the time reading, we're going to see really funny Monday morning quarterbacking by Cam Newton. Basically, anyone who didn't have the basically any team that did never homes Lamar Jackson people are just going to kill them for not signing Cam Newton and I can't wait to see I think the best like I. The niners I think you're gonNA see people being like, why didn't I saw today people like why didn't the niners go sign Cam Newton? The super bowl by months ago like I'm as big a Cam Newton Fan as anybody but I just thought that was early that was Kinda funny. Again, it would have been amazing. That's my point. It would have been amazing at the niners sank signed candidate. They had them right now and and Jimmy Garoppolo had this high ankle injury and they had Cam Newton. That'd be amazing. I'm just saying it wasn't for them. I I kind of understand the point but firm again for several team for a million bucks, they should have signed him but I, they built a good rostrum I'm not ready to. Go down on the hill, I'm not gonNA NOT GONNA fire John Lynch for this. If if Jed York doesn't yell at John Lynch for this, I'm going to give them a pass on this is. Susan not. Geared up to dish out some guys ascend. To send the email. All right nor Prince Yati, Kevin Clark to Tuesday's Ryan Shazier. Player centric perspective I'm really excited here. He's on with Coal Right obviously, Warren Shop Chris Vernon on Wednesdays. We're back on Thursdays and that Warren and Joe House Friday stock lineup. This week. NFL Show, podcast network. Guys made made some bad. Some good calls. We remember its foot long season at subway..

"Steve's going to have a chance to compete I. Think they've got a really good shot to make the playoffs. So yeah, I I agree with you. I think as long as Ben is healthy. Year are going to be in contention in the AFC. North and I wouldn't be surprised at all. They made a little Rod. He's back to what he was back in twenty eighteen now. They just know the steelers brought familiar face with Josh Dobbs what are. We know, pens the starting quarterback. What's the depth chart? What's their plans at quarterback for this season especially now with the expanded practice flawed yes. So Mason Rudolph is still GonNa be the backup that is unchanged Josh dogs will be the number three and Devon Hodges who of course won three games as an undrafted rookie create last year they put him on the practice squad. So the reason they brought stop stack is they really like? His ability to run the offense. Very intelligent and he has something that there's other three don't have he can run. So if they ever got into a situation again. Let's say bengals down Mason goes down or Mason is ineffective they could push josh jobs in there because could sorta Taylor the offense to his skills and can sort out of different dimension to what they had last year. So they liked loves they just don't like enough right now. To be that's taught. Now, you mentioned that defense earlier obviously, the focal point of the still going to be this year on the Michigan Wolverines Fan I love Devin Bush at Michigan is still love him for the steelers what his his presence like on that, defense? Overall. It was good as a rookie. Played more snap inside linebacker than any other. LINEBACKER ON THE ROSTER Yet, fumble return for a touchdown got a couple of. He was good. Thinking is you know from your own work in the NFL two year to breath when most Clare's improves the boasts and their careers in The big thing for David this year. Is being a communicator in the middle of defense. Last he wasn't ready for that role they want him to step up and take on that role this year, they want him to get the defense line up they want him to be a player for all situation. So if he can do that, you can go from being really good. Very, good or great depending on you know his his match ration-, level but just for twenty one year old rookie last year he did fine. But his feelings is much iron yet steers no got endeavour knows that has all year your to now owns GonNa ask you one last question. Let you go running for the steelers for a long time. What's been the best story you've had from steelers training camp I know this year's a little different with the pandemic and everything but give me your best store that you can think off the top of your head from a steelers training camp. That when pro football focus was just coming about you know they were still very small operation. I wrote about it I got got in touch with. Neil Hornsby who who started the site he was still based. In Britain at the time and you know I went up to Markey's policy because I. If you follow off at all, you know the county he's not rolling 'cause he's not. He doesn't always create out all that well with. Focus, Soak. County. I asked about it and he gave me he gave me a really good answer angry answer but. It kind of made the story as well. So that's that's the first one off the talk my early sort of. Pro. Football focus on the map. So to speak that was back in twenty thirteen or twenty fourteen and you look up today or OUT THEY STARTED USA we do very welcome a lot of business NFL team. Stabbing US talk. My head was pretty Sunday through just because. Concepts such a great answer. No thought what they thought A. Putting pro football focus on the map. Thanks to taste you and Pouncey at that point. All right I'll get Joe. RAFIT. Apollo. You follow me on twitter at. Ray Fit again, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette writer for the Pittsburgh steelers are Ray. Thank you again for taking your time to talk to me on one and done radio. Iraq's researching. Helped me on. Our so that was a great interview with Ray and I was very thankful that Ray took his time to talk to me on one and done radio and. I want to talk about next and that's talking about my nfl seasons about the start and. Gain coming up first game this season Houston at Kansas City that stadium is GonNa be so quiet. It's insane how quiet is going to be, but I'm just here to give my picks for each division winner. Appreciate I've done this but don't WanNa go into. What As, far as like me do it I'm GonNa give my picks again if I had done it great. Then, let's see if I matched them up if I have not. Oh well. So I WANNA, start with the AFC and want to start with the AFC north. And referring to that division with Cleveland Baltimore. Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. Now. I want to go and just I gotta go with them. I. GotTa go with the Baltimore Ravens I'm it's I understand. Ben Rothlisberger coming back Pittsburgh's going to be a different team. Probably, they may be the best team in the AFC. North I don't know yet. My thing is this. I'm Ju I'm just concerned and I'm not banking on injury for Rothlisberger or saying he's going to get injured. I'm just concerned with his health how he's GonNa be. He has had preseason games to get ready to get in shape to game action. I'm not saying that he's can be rusty when it comes to. Reading defenses, but you know again the path of Hey, I gotta make sure we're sank as far as my receivers running backs, whatever it is my offense align throwing the ball against. That are not your defense it's GonNa be tough. CINCINNATI THEY'RE REBUILDING WITH JOE BOROUGH CLEVELAND is a team that I think. Now with the right coaching and the even a better ofensive repertoire. Campbell just said then I try not really good at that word it's weird. But. With that, they should be in the mix as well. However, in Baltimore, I know defenses are going to be able to gain plan better for Lamar Jackson. They had a whole off season to do especially if you're in the AFC north, that's your team that you have to beat. I just like. I like Baltimore still to win the division at that point we'll. It'd be the top seeding in. I. Don't know I. Had to look at Kansas City at that point which leads me to a FC West Kansas. City. I think this is a no brainer at that point you're looking at team like Denver who Denver is. I think they're working in the right direction I don't think that there yet then you got the Las Vegas Raiders sorry I just don't really believe in Jon Gruden right now and finally the Los Angeles chargers I think just taking a step back. Yes. A draft adjustment Herbert but seems like tyrod Taylor's is gonNA. Be The quarterback right now until they feel ready to handed over to Herbert? But I'd like see I can't help but go can't go against. Kansas, city to win the division. Next. AFC South. My opinion this.

"Do, you look at the last three years when you're making this determination as donald is still so elite, and the kid only had one of these sort of best player in football type years. How did you way that determination that Sam yeah, the the one on one list is. It's very gray driven, and it's very. It's over a specific period of time right so two thousand nineteen. George, biddle had the best grade. We've ever given a tight end so that you look at our city year year, tight end grades. It's basically a list of Bronx career, and then it'll at the top. So just for that alone I. Think we had to give him back. But if you're projecting next year, you, you've got to start looking at sample size, and how long guys for a mets where Donald puts himself at the top like I think last year was the first year and a few seasons where he didn't win or wasn't the top of the the one on one list. Over any period of time you stretch the rating act to Donald is the number one guy on defense, probably the number, one guy in the entire NFL like and again when we start looking at the difference between him and the next guy at his position like the difference between killing Kelsey still debate like yeah. I think it was a better player last year, but projecting this year. Year I'd say, it's probably a coin. Flip the difference between Donald and the next best guy at his position I think is larger than the difference between anybody in that the next best player at bear position, and it's it's such a yawning chasm like the difference between him. Number two is as big as the difference. We number two and like a rank average defensive tackle. So massive that I think he has to be the top guy. Who is number two? We always do this debate with Aaron. Donald was. He's so much on the other guy. I never even hear a name because it's such a huge Gulf I never even hear a name number two is. There is no Travis Kelsey Tear Donald Will there is. It just changes every year? It's like a writing group of non Aaron. Donald Interior pressure player. It's been Fletcher conches having in two thousand eighteen last year. Year. You can make a case. It's Chris Jones. When healthy I think there's a few guys instead of take. Take interns to be the second best guy with Aaron Donald I. Think is an interesting question which is how positional value affects it and we talked about a second ago, but when I think about Aaron Donald and his impact on a game obviously is a game record. Obviously, he's a lead. One point is and brought. Brought up to me by actually San one of your bosses Neil Hornsby was that there are ways to? You can't take out of a game, but maybe mitigate his impact. The one example that Neil gave me a couple of years ago was that infamous golf trubisky game and Primetime the bears essentially changed their offense to get rid of the the ball, and about one and a half seconds every time, just an unbelievable changing game. Game Plan and all of a sudden Aaron, Donald is still breaking double team still wrecking games, but you just sort of moved the ball away from him. whereas in this was something that that you know brought up Abi Wagner who is also elite? You can't necessarily game. Plan him the same way because he's in pass coverage because he's all over the field because he can move and so it's a little bit different when. Positional value gets put into this conversation. How does it change things? I think as soon as you introduce positional value into the discussion to change everything The top twenty plus players would all be quarterback second you do that and Donald tumbles down the list as soon as you start talking about value because he's less valuable than most number, one wide receivers in the NFL, he's probably less valuable than a lot of number one quarterbacks, even if he's playing consistently at a much higher level, because as as you said and neal, started off with the point that it's easier to take him out of the game than it is the top cornerback even. I you know there's an argument that you can do the same thing to a number one corner. You don't throw it in his direction, but I think it's harder or it has more of an impact doing that. You can still execute a good offense by am getting rid of the ball. Really Quickly Donald. Just never affects the play at all or you know when Jj Watt was in his palm. Yeah to him at times as well. You know teams. Run away from him they. They would get the ball I quickly. You can get those guys out of the game, so they're not a factor now. They're still affecting it because you have to play the game a certain way to achieve that but I think it has more of an impact when you're doing that to get away from a top cornerback because you're doing one of two things. If it's a guy that tracks receiver like reverse, you're essentially electing to never throw at your best receiver for the entire game. Sacrificing that guy so that Rivas doesn't affect the game and then with the Sherman he staying on one side. You're not doing that. You're now like never targeting that side of the field, so those two things I think have a significant effect on what you're doing an offense in a way that just getting the ball. I'd quicker doesn't necessarily APP. All right, we can broaden this conversation but Danny. Let's get your best player in football. Yes so I guess I would say the the caveat that I said earlier about how the MVP discussion is kind of annoying, because the the value question is certainly very different from from like best overall player that all being said I'm still gonNA. Go with Patrick Mahomes just because so and I thought about this a lot and I think you know it's a very interesting discussion on how you separate value versus just overall quality I guess like best superlative best player but I, but I like this He. Number one extremely consistent. very very well rounded skill set when you think about the things that he can do that so few if any quarterbacks in the NFL can do I think that sort of separates him from the rest of the crowd. He's to me that much better. I don't know if any other team if any fell would choose a different quarterback if they wanted a quarterback under center regardless of their like position in their career in terms. Terms of like how old they are, whatever like is any team taking anyone else, but Patrick mahomes right now like for any reason. No, I don't think so. Yeah, so like whether you want to win year one or have a like a long-term dynasty or whatever I think that to me kind of like separates him from from the rest of the players at his position and then I also thought about this a little bit..

The seventies was very like sexually significant to a whole generation of people, and that some people credited with the creation of the ferry movement. because. It's one of the. Yeah, it's one of its kind of the first were the most significant eggs ample of that sort of thing, where it's like a human body with an animal head in American pop culture, and that's just general. Will we still be Horny for Robin, hood and Disney's upcoming remake and I guess that's a lot. A lot of kids crushes robinhood, growing up a Robin Hood, the Fox and like when you look at a comparison of the Robin Hood, Fox, and their early and most significant ferry characters that people dress up as there's a lot of similarities there. "Move over here in the summer of two thousand seventeen so Almost three years now And Yeah then with PF pretty much. Since the beginning we were lucky enough to be kind of on the ground floor one of the first guys working here and then so we should have seen the whole thing. Grow from nothing to wear. It is to where Chris Collins worth ends up buying the company and that's when everybody starts to up stakes and mood addie. That's Pretty Wild. So just tell me it'd be before we get into some of the stuff that I was calling about originally. I'm just interested in this so you moved to the states in twenty seventeen. When did you become a huge fan of of American football of the NFL? Years before I lived in Minnesota for a year. When I was a kid was virgin so we moved around a lot I think I kind of always had some kind of following from it from from back. Then then you go to college and that's when you can actually watch games crazy times in the morning over in the UK and Ireland So at that point I think my my sort of interested in it really take back up again and then with active enough in the community over there of the football following the community to be able to be on. Neil Hornsby's radar when he needed people to help them start grading games eff. So that's how I got it being the founder of pro football focus and you mentioned the collins worth purchasing now. I'm a little bit more interested in this first so that we'll get to the redskins stuff in a moment but did you. Were you a vikings fan. Did you live in Minneapolis? We lived in Rochester. Min- Minneapolis or Rochester. Minnesota Rather So a little bit side but yeah but Viking sign for crossway fault. Are You Still Viking? Fan? Yeah I think so you know when you you become a sort of analysts of all thirty two teams you sort of lose a little bit of the when you. You're just sort of in the day to day grind of it but still I still softball for the Vikings. Still you know forlornly hoping that at some point they'll get over the hump yet. Well I'm going to remind myself right now to circle back to this because I am one of the Redskin fans in D. C. Sam that is also a huge kirk cousins fan. I think they made a big mistake. Not being aggressive verbally and getting signed to a long term contract there was you. Remember the situation here. It was really messed up seven ways to Sunday with the way the team handled it But I'm still a fan of his and I actually went to get your your thoughts on him And we'll do that a little bit later on just real quickly because I think a lot of NFL fans in a lot of my audience who are Redskin fans. Everybody's familiar with you. Know sort of this meteoric rise of pro football focus in this advanced statistical way of looking at not just every player but nearly every play that every player plays in You mentioned the the founder and you said that you were one of the early employees like how early were you there on the ground floor when it launched Well it's kind of. I was like third guy in the door. Depending on you know how exactly you're measuring it and Neil sets it off. Meal the comes up with the idea. That's gets a website functioning. He hires a guy called Ben stock well to do to help with the grading and sort of flesh out the whole process band very quickly realized that in order to understand how good a guy is from grading terms. You need to know how many times he was on the field because obviously the same great on ten snaps versus fifty snaps is completely different. So band sort of devised this player. Participation System about point. They needed people come in and start doing that. So that's when I came on board so yeah one of the very first steeple on board to help do games and for the first couple of years the core team there was sort of like five five guys which I was. You know one of the main one of the guys there. What is just out of curiosity? What's the business model. Where are the revenues they come from teams? It's a it's let them a medal. We've got all thirty two. Nfl teams or customers. We've got seventy plus college teams Csl teams media entities either the big networks and then we sell to consumers as well. So that's the the whole other side of businesses are edge elite products where we sell The grades we sell the advanced statistics. Find information and green line the betting abetting data. So we've got us at a split fifty fifty from the BBC side of things where we sell teams and and big networks and then the individual customers when Collins Worth Perch purchased pro football focus. Did he purchase a majority stake? Or resilient was he. An investor purchase majority stake. Almost the whole Shebang interesting. You know one of the things is is. I've I did a show with For several years with Chris Cooley the redskins former tight end and he's a really good friend and he comes on this podcast with me all the time as well an early on it was interesting because as people would say to us well. Didn't you see what you know? Jordan reads pro. Football Focus. Grade was from that that game and Cooley did this thing Sam on a weekly basis after games. Were he graded the players? And he said that the biggest early on He wasn't necessarily a fan just to be completely honest with you in part because his his feeling was in many cases the evaluation of a player was off at the start because pro. Football Focus didn't understand the responsibility of the player on a given play for example. You know he would say Jordan Reed Or or the the the guard was supposed to get to a double team. Missed the double team but handled I block whatever it was but he would say you know in many cases and he understood how the coaches were grading the players that the grades weren't matching up. I will tell you that a year or two later he thought you guys were much sharper in your evaluation. But what is the whole in the evaluation of a player is it that you don't know necessarily what the responsibility of a player on a given plays. I think it's a good thing that as we've been doing this we've been getting more and more. Nfl feedback and more and more knowledge within the grading System so the fact that we approved in his eyes I think is a good testament to that But we're we're in the same boat as everybody else. Anybody from the outside is not going to know what goes on within specific team meeting rooms and the exact Weird you know eccentricities in a specific assignment. Nobody's GonNa know that including every other NFL team. That's you know scouting for their future opponents. If you're like if you're watching the Patriots and you're not in that Patriots meeting room. You don't know their exact assignments either. So everybody's working from a either a best guess or a A extrapolating be information. They do have based off every other team in the NFL. And you know that's the other aspect of this is most teams running kind of the same stuff you know inside zone by and large is inside zone outside zone. Same the rules are very similar you can. You can decipher what everybody's doing now. Everybody has a little bits of quirks and wrinkles to that and you can be led astray occasionally with those are pretty small percentages in the overall scheme of things And I think one of the tenets if yes is this is particularly relevant when it comes to the you know coverage bus on the back end and you. You don't know who screwed it up right. Somebody's made a big mistake as a receiver running free and the defense. And maybe it's a safety. Maybe it's the cornerback. Maybe the whole thing started because a linebacker went the wrong place and everybody at Domino's started to fall if we if we don't know who completely screwed up if we're not confident who made the mess up. Everybody gets a zero grade and we don't we don't train guess right we just put it down as a a nothing on the play. It doesn't really get graded and we move onto the next one rather than trying. Guess get it wrong and swings guys great massively because we're on the wrong side of it so one of the biggest things we do is is. If we're if we're not sure in these plays we don't guess and we put we put everybody down with the kind of default catchall grade and then we'll come back and we'll try to get more information out of out of NFL teams and we'll try and get A better sense of what happened on those plays so I think as years a gun on you know. We've tightened up a lot of the the blind spots in the system. How do teams use? You guys like you said that you have contracts with. Did you say all thirty two teams? Yep So give me. An example of how eighteen uses your service do they use it for their own evaluation or for opponents evaluations more. Yeah I mean the thing is thirty two. Nfl teams thirty two different levels of competency at everything. Right whether it's football whether it's data whether it's analytics on the back end whether it's video guys so teams using in completely different ways depending on who it is and they use this in almost every single way you can think of the biggest way that every single team uses. Bff Is we have a system called. Ps s alternate that ties our data into their video system so Monday for teams used to be coming in and setting. Qc coaches to work creating real for the opposition next week right. That doesn't happen anymore because it's all. Pf ultimate those QC coaches can now actually do real work on a Monday. Instead of spending their day you know grinding through tape and working banks over the last four weeks pull up. It is coaches one. On a week everything can be done in like twenty five minutes on Monday morning using PSI system. So we're saving every NFL team twenty hours of work at the start of the week. I think that's the biggest thing but we've heard all kinds of stories. You know teams have used us to self scout. Their coaching grades. You know they. They've F grades. They've compared them to the the grades. It their coaches. Were giving internally in saying well these guys are. These are some very high numbers. These these coaches are giving when the data says. These guys aren't doing that well when the role numbers say. They're not doing that well. You know why they're being so generous But we've also heard stories of Guys just using the grading to get a better understanding of tape study you know. Pull up these guys pull up The best players that there we've you we've seen teams using it for.

"Worth coming up here in a moment seth in Pennsylvania leads us off today. Seth what's on your mind and that I've been there from the beginning and never called Sur. Five eleven one seventeen. Why did you wait? So long. Seth Well this is actually Well let me just let me. Just say this off okay. The reason I'm calling in today is two years ago. I may twenty first todd. Fritz was preparing section row seats for its World Premiere. Carolina's lead evening okay. I'll keep this short. My girlfriend and I were actually in the audience that night. I tweeted a photo of me in front of the marquee uproot. We sat one table away from you guys but I did not say hello because the timing did not seen right and you said all week that you did not want fans of the show there but I wanted to try to help out fritzy does. No one's made me laugh more than the last thirteen years than him. And we were in the city. Celebrate my thirty eight so just Kinda all lined up as we all know. The set did not go that well for todd but for the show that night was pure gold but the biggest of the night for me and Dan. You miss this because you left right after joking. Got Off the stage and I don't think this was ever mentioned on the show but as soon as the next comedian was done. The Room was quiet. And mclovin POPs. Up and classic McLaughlin fashion noxious drink all over. The table tries to clean it up and then exit stage left. So thank you mclovin. You're making that seventy five dollars for this four drinks. Well worth it and thank you guys for having the best show in the world. I'm superfan thank you. Seth and we'll let you know if we can get fritzy back on stage again highly doubtful. He's a prideful man. He doesn't WanNa take jokes from Adam. Sandler David Spade Rob Schneider. Who would help him right? Who said we'll get to todd here coming up in a moment and we read. It'd make way for Chris Collins. Worth who set to join us now. He's not there. Yeah yes mclovin. That guy was definitely at the sand up because I grew in the whole table. But I think I think he got Chris. Oh we do Chris you their Dan. What's happening brother? Where are you right now? I am at Longbow G Florida. Having a good time I just got back from a about a three point two mile run which I used to be able to do backwards in my sleep now. I feel like I've got heart out the patients. I'm sweating all over myself and just barely making so there you go you remember when we used to be athletes brother. We were it up one. Oh yeah that was the older. I get the better. I was Chris. Tell me like this even have a light. I've been doing so many of these things. I actually have something to help the cause a little bit. You got any memorabilia behind you say if if I go into your house do you know? Do I know that you played football if you go into? Pf You know that. I played football. So obviously we're we're we're started that governor on shoestring budget and so all of the decorations my wife hotly were all stuff in crap and things that she did not want in her house so she'd kindly donated the PF so all any and all memorabilia that I have is down there and now it is literally embarrassing. I mean it's like you know my my when I went to summer basketball camp. I won the layup on. Just what I got. All that stuff. It's all out and A. Pf is pro football focus. What was the goal when you started this? I didn't start it. A bunch of guys in England were actually Neil Hornsby and the guys are the ones that actually started and I just literally was looking for help online they want me to post game. Show on NBC. And I said well. Hey that's a great idea except I never see any of the Games of the. No wonder we're doing Sunday night. I you know. Have it on in the background but I'm study at all day? Tried to get ready for our game as well so I start looking around. And I find these sheets in color coded things that EPA put out and so I plug in twenty six ninety nine and I say okay Blah Blah nicest. Pretty good. Because I've done a bunch of these dame recently side type in the little you know. Contact US thing. I said the hell. Are you guys and coaches or something like that and so about three minutes later? This Guy Neil Hornsby calls and with this British accent and as adults Neil Hunt. I can't go British accident so nice Chris and all I can think is this. Sob just hustle. Be Out at twenty six ninety nine. I'm so out of my mind mad. I can't stand so I said this. GonNa last about fifteen sites so I started. Firing all questions him about you know linebackers and guards and kickers and things that no way he's going to this. Brit knows anything about right. After about five minutes. I have shut up and just started listening. This guy knows way more about football knows way more about the league knows way more about everything than I and I said who in the hell are you and they had this Internet band of brothers put together about eleven them that was they just. They found American. Football interesting started when all the online stuff started back in the early two thousand in the nineties and ice and they had eleven or twelve teams. That were paying for their services at the time. It's just one of the most incredible stories that that you'll ever hear. And now you know. Thirty two teams and seventy something college teams and the networks. And it's been pretty hot. Pf recently simulated the twenty twenty NFL season said there is ten thousand. Games are times. They did this over and over and over. What was the big headline that you took away from this simulated twenty twenty season that. I have no idea what they're doing when they do that. It was you know it really is. You know it's it's almost about the the gambling part of everything that goes on. And so then you start going right. Here's what the over under is for all teams. You know this is the Pittsburgh steelers at nine and a half the Detroit. Lions at six and a half and so. I started going down the list and I said all right. I don't gamble but I part of me right. All of us would kind of light to you know we all look at these things go. I know more about football than anybody. I can certainly figure this out but I think the teams that did I would be personally interested against those numbers. I I like the steelers at nine and a half I mean returns. They had the twenty seventh ranked offense last year. That's going to happen again. Right team that lead in Saxon takeaways. The Detroit lions at six and a half with the return of Matthew Stafford. I think that that's a that's a good opportunity so I don't know that the Green Bay packers necessarily got better with what they did in the draft. You know they've got a backup quarterback now they've got people but they didn't go get a receiver. They didn't go get a corner. They get somebody that can really help the blocks at eight point seven so Tom Brady gets them to nine win. When's the last time Tom Brady to get a team? Denying Wednesday no sorry he's got. We had Chris. God what might Devon's is the number one and number six receiver all football. We know what their receivers were a season ago. In New England Naiad to that mix what about the other one I think is a Dallas cowboys I loved CB lay. I don't know if you've got a chance to see and hear CD lamb. I never scouted a guy in college football where Mike comment so I go through and I watched about an hour on you. Know the top sixty or seventy guys and my comments were always well in this game. He broke this loin. Daybreak five tackles or is seventy arts etched up this game. He broke six tackles for fifty yards test. Youngest me broke five. Tackles for fifty yard touchdown off the charts. I think he's GonNa be a star. Yeah I thought he was the best receiver in the draft. But I don't study it like you do in the scouts do but when you say break tackles. I don't even think they got close enough to tackle in Chris. I think that they had there needs to be a new category. It's not breaking tackles. It's actually alluding tackles because that's what OECD lamb did in the Texas game. It's like five guys Converge On. Him and I don't know if anybody put a Paul on him. I am is ridiculous Ba and the other thing is. I think that we're starting to see some of these got so it's a whoever won the super bowl right. We're all going to copy that. It's the forty niners had one. They'd all be buildings outside zones too tight ends and all that kind of stuff but the Kansas City chiefs line with Calcium Watkins goal hardman. And they go out and get this Edwards layer which is a an unbelievable guy. You're talking about somebody you can't tackle a neocon feel. As far as a running thing. We talked about Tampa Bay now loading up receiver the Dallas Cowboys for a Cooper. Michael doubt with CD manual. Sanders GOES NEW ORLEANS. Saints with Mike Tomlin's step on digs with John Brown and Colby's I mean you go right down the list. I think the Copycat League right now is that we're going to go. Just load up with all these unbelievable playmakers running backs in the league. Right now are fairly interchangeable. So let's go get a quarterback. Let's go get some of these great wide receivers and let's see what happens out there but it is turning into touch the ball. I mean it really is turning into. Let's put nobody in the backfield. Spread this sucker out and go throw it around or you've got the forty niners in the Shan style of play. Let's compact it like the rams like you saw the forty niners like you're going to see what the Green Bay packers a little bit and let's do the outside zone bootlegs and and the jet sweeps and everything he's Chris Collins Worth NBC Sunday night. Football color analyst with Al Michaels. Michele Tafoya couple of questions here will breeze through them. Joe Borough Start Day one the bengals. Yes I mean. What do you got to lose right? I mean a little bit. They're a little bit of your home. So I there's something about Joe Borough that I have liked from the beginning and tried to figure out what it was and I was watching their center. Getting ready for the drafts. And he's a nice player. I don't WanNa put them down at all. But he didn't like clean miss a few times pass protection that clearly was the weakest part of his game and so joe saw watching them. I was really watching the center but of course boroughs behind him and boroughs of ability to just step around some of these unblocked guys and make a little move and play. You Know Tom. Brady's not fast but if you watch Tom Brady. Throughout the course of his career he has a nice little feel for what's going on in the pocket and can kind of step around that and the other part of his game that I really like was he reminds me of my Guy. Troy now troy enjoy can be a little salty at times right like toys. Never GonNa have a problem telling you exactly how he feels about it. And of course with all the big personalities of the Dallas Cowboys back in the day in the day with Jerry and Jimmy and everything was going on..

"Apartment. And as I do every week I'm going to go over a few things things that happened in the NFL. We're going to say a couple of sentences on every one of Sunday's games and I wanted to start by telling you a little bit about what I did the last week. I spent a COUPLA days in Green Bay on Wednesday and Thursday looking into the future of Mike McCarthy. The fifty five year old former Green Bay packers coach lead the pack to a Super Bowl Championship in two thousand ten and since then has been fighting to get back never did and the packers fired him. Fifty four weeks ago. After in his last nearly three years he went twenty three twenty three and one in that period of time and the packers moved on with Matt Leflore and they are flourishing. They're eleven and three Mike McCarthy and his family stayed in Green Bay his wife is from Green Bay. They have a beautiful home there and I went over and spent some time with them. We talked about his future. I also recorded something in the car. One one day when on Thursday just before I left and I want to play that for you. I first. You get a little sense of what Mike McCarthy has been up to and then I'll come back and we will talk a little bit about this week's column so driving away from Mike McCarthy's Office barn out just outside of Green Bay spent some time. I'm with former packers coach and Mike. You'll hear a lot of this on the podcast this week but the one thing that strikes me that I did not expect is certainly the emphasis on the new the emphasis this on some things. That people might not really know about you. We spent a lot of time talking about analytics and about what you would like to bring to whatever your new job is assuming you get a new job in two thousand twenty. How did you become a big believer in analytics? And what do you you think of it. I know based off a perception. You know per our conversation but it's really been a big part of my path in the national football league I entered the NFL's a quality control coach So always had data processing background and you know I think those things sometimes get lost in you know in your profile When you do a move up the ladder incense but there's so much So much out there particularly staff the third party companies have have really made an impact You know in our industry and I. I think it's important to always look for you. Know new better quicker ways to come to good sound decision making results. So that's that's really what this extra time to really dive into the capabilities and kind of re re re program your your outline Outlook on a on a football tech department and in really hall analytics are not only us but applied to the everyday you know training and coaching coaching of your football team. You spend a day in your Sort of football discovery process over the past year. You you spend a day in Cincinnati at pro football focus which people would know it's his. PF they're kind of pushing the envelope of data data gathering an analytics. What did you take away from that day? I just can't thank you know Neil Hornsby in in Chris Collins worth enough to really open their doors. But you know the one thing. It's very evident You you walk in there and it's a it's a computer football sweatshop. I just don't think they'd get fit. Another individual in a computer ended our building so it it's just The ability to grab and collect data is is something that I was very impressed with. Not only the the process of doing it but just their commitment to staying on top of all the intricacies of of of of what the game of football presents but the ability to collect it. You know analyze it and then put it into new filters and in in designing your new programs the that really make things quicker and for the coaches and players to to study and because it you know identity we all have the same amount of time and energy to to do this job and when you you have no tolls as what. PF is has created. You know it's definitely something. That's I think it speaks for itself that every the NFL club is has looked into or or as utilizing Mike Wilbon with this on this brief little preview of what. I'm doing this week. Both in my column column and on the podcast but you also showed me a flow chart of what you want. Basically your football technology Laghi Department to be and you have seven dedicated employees on that flow chart to analytics and football technology legacy so it seems like you really want to push the envelope in that area Definitely I it's it's important because our job is as coaches is is how you know how we instruct in. How do we create the best environment for our players to be prepared to perform reformed so I think the resources are are at all time high as far as you know how. How how you evaluate the game came in and I think you know as we're able to talk through the the flow chart the organizational chart just a distinct job description of each position it how it fits to the coaching staff to the personnel.

"What does that really mean overseeing the quarterback grading so you know every week <hes> everyone's you? You know there's there's certain guys focus on certain things throughout a game but everyone's go. There's a bunch of guys going through in initially grading each play and that's you know guys looking at the quarterback the receiver the offense a line wind deepak defense the primary coverage die all that and I will be the is that it comes to me last so Sunday night. I'll pray start getting a few of the Games around eight o'clock at night and then I have to to have all the great overseeing and done by Monday around noon so I have to get through about fourteen games in a manner that span and <hes> so it it's already graded you did and I'm just kind of matching up and watching the plays with the grade and making sure the quarterback grade is accurate. You know I might see something that you know I might look and say you know what can't pin that on the quarterback because you know I I've been in that kind of offense and that receiver went to deep or it could be the reverse that quarterback totally miss at throw and we didn't great him appropriately on that so <hes> that's kind of several be doing <hes> on a week to week basis that is awesome and I liked it. They have kind of a cross checker or oversight like that. I remember talking with Neil Hornsby man probably ten years ago after I retired and just talking with him about the concept and my concern was it's not always easy when you're watching other offensive linemen to know what what they're taught or what they were going to do on a certain play so let alone somebody that didn't play. I feel like that would be tough and I've talked with him about it and they've said you know we really we just grade guys on what they tried to do as opposed to trying to figure out what they were supposed to do and so I think that's probably fair because when it comes to mental errors errs on the offensive line. There's really not that many of them. I mean if you're making multiple mental Ariza game. You're really not playing anymore. I mean they're not gonNA. They're not gonNA stand for that. Although I do remember having a G._M.. Tell tell me that you know a guy that P._f.. Graded very very highly you know that he was good for a couple devastating mental errors game where he didn't even he didn't even know who he was supposed to block and a guy would come free free and whatever but obviously I can't know that and I would think maybe the only position maybe secondary but then other than that obviously quarterback is the one where it's more more than anything. It's the mental part of it. So do you grade them on..

"And we're looking at the at the hard one I would take hard in there over the long touchdown because I think that these teams are going to play for the most part bend. But not break. It's not to say somebody won't be able to break one deep. I cannot see a Bill Belichick coach defense leading brain cooks get behind them. I think they're gonna play similarly to how they play tyreek hill, and that was amazing to me that Andy Reed did not find ways to get the ball into hills. I think that McVeigh's gonna do a better job with close. But he's not going to get behind the defense. Like he did on that. Key play against the saints. I just don't see it happening. So I'll take the hardened points over the length of touchdown. Will you actually bet it in real life? Crossbow? Let's just I'll bet design Williamson one that I brought up before. And you know what? Now, I think I am going to bet that just because I talked about it. And so if it happens, and I don't bet it I'll be mad Sonam gonna bet it let's get back to some legitimate props. This is your Super Bowl fifty three MVP Brady, even so any- Michelle sixteen to one element thirty two one gronk James white forty two one HOGAN eighty to one clearly everyone is on the patriots here because there are no I'm sorry. Come the they do separately. Let me let me try to give him in order for your Brady, even in Goth two to one Sony Michelle and girly sixteen to one C J Anderson twenty two one Brandin cooks Robert woods, Julian Edelman, thirty two one gronk James white forty two one. I'm not going to bother with the rest. Like, I had mentioned earlier. And I said this Brent Musburger on the media podcast. I love the value in gronk at forty two one. Do I think he's going to be the MVP probably not? But again, put a dollar and when forty on gronk, I'll take my chances. How do you not take the quarterbacks? The gramling brothers will now explain. Golfs only two to one. That's too bad mean the books. Make a lot of money on this thing. Yeah. The prices are are not friendly. I'll give the historical daycare, Neil Hornsby. From pro football, focus. He's right column for us on the cubes still a still a friend of the program, but he wrote a piece before Super Bowl fifty saying bond Miller is going to be super MVP, which he would something like eighteen to one at that point. And obviously you want it because they tried single block with Mike remers for for sixty minutes. But yeah, I I take golf just that's value. If they're going to the Rams are gonna win the game. There's no one else. This is one of those games..

"But india uh many ways to get that job done so um i want to start off by first of all just saying that i think a lot of people know that pro football focus has been in the nfl analyst business analyzing every snap of every player in every game and basically grading every player on every snap since two thousand six but you guys just recently have gotten into the college business when and why yeah i mean it was just why is because neil hornsby are founder wants to do it all and he has a vision that he had a vision for the nfl had the vision for college we started it in two thousand fourteen uh in we don't do anything small so we went and did every single fps game so that's eight hundred seventy or so games per year uh even when fbi schools are playing fcf schools and it's just a different way of of analysing football and looking at data and it's been valuable for you know the nf we work with college teams or take that data use it in game planning and then nfl teams or take that data and use it every which way to to to scout these guys and and project them for the future so uh working on our fourth full year date enough specter starting in two thousand fourteen you're listening and then the the podcast podcast state farm knows it for football fans your car and homer more than just stuff there's some of euros valuable possessions the things you've worked hard foreign have made a lifetime of memories with whether it's the truck that you'd every tailgate or the place where you want your favorite team with your favorite people but life can be a real tough opponent that's why when it comes to finding the right home and auto insurance you need a strong defence a season pearl like state farm they understand it's more than just a car or a house so why not give it the protection it deserves it's just one more way state farm here to help life go right see how they can help you by talking to his state farm agent today.
