"Her own. Yeah. It was a sort of, it was a brawl, really, of a tennis match. In Danielle Collins style. And as you said, it sort of snuck up on us, I think, because we were worried about it at the start because she had a huge amount of tape applied to that knee in sort of two goals. It was really heavy tape. And yet it turned into an absolutely fantastic match, both players hitting big and yeah. Last year's finalist, Kotlin's like, that would have been a big shock if she'd gone out, and she was close to going out because cannon sky really, really did play well. So she's done well to battle through and let's hope the knee is okay. Yeah, absolutely fingers crossed. It was like a greatest hits of Daniel Collins out there wasn't a brilliant stuff. At the same time, Martin costic was beating Amanda Anderson over 6 three 6 four deserved victory, I think, Anderson over carrying a bit of an injury is back canvas status in any doubt, I think Amazon and it's a movie could lose every match for the rest of time, right? She's always on the show. Just on cost check. When I made my way at the start of the day to the commentary box for the first time just before play was about to get underway. If you've ever seen the surveillance cameras in the corridors outside the player area, it's where it's like a sort of underground car park feel to it and yet I think it is actually okay. Explain that. Players are warming up in that area. All together down these two walkways. Doing shuttle runs and jump in a band and juggling tennis balls with their fitness trainers. I walked down just when there must have been about 12 players doing exactly this and I'd got a walk between them with my rucksack and my sort of unathletic physique. And I walked past Marta coste and I actually had excuse me. Any chance I could just get past here. Well, she's doing a warmup for a match, but anyway, it was quite a sight to see how pumped these players were, particularly her, and she went out. And I was surprised in a way that she handled an over that comfortably. But you know, she's on the rise as well. And loves to play in Australia. This is where she had her breakthrough, of course, a few years ago. So those were the matches in the first slot Marie sakurai was second up on the rod laver arena her top seemed to have shrunk in the wash. Don't know if she's looking into that. Crop top and basically showing off the most extraordinary physique and 6 pack. Yeah, I think it's made for Zachary that top. Yeah. I'll be interested if anybody else appears wearing that. I suspect not. I suspect it's Zachary specific. Anyway, did the trick. 6 one 6 four over UE one today. I think the other big women's result that we need to talk about is eager young tech. Defeating you'll in niemeyer two straight sets, not too straightforward sets. I was so impressed with Yugoslav today and not because she was brilliant. There were moments when she was brilliant, but this was, this was winning when she wasn't playing her best, and as we've discussed at length, okay, there's the odd exception and one of those exceptions might be eager film tech at both her French Open titles. But generally speaking, you don't win Grand Slam titles unless you can win when you're not at your best and that's exactly what Schmidt did today. I mean, the first set was kind of a steal. That's how you described it, isn't it Matt from underneath my nose and the second set a little bit the same, Nemo served for it and shonte just had an injection of brilliance that nimai didn't have at the end of both of those sets. Yeah, I completely agree. I found myself really impressed with both players, actually. I thought nee Meyer was very impressive. Apart from sort of at the end of each set, because as you said, she did have sort of chances to win both. I think she's got a great temperament niemeyer. She actually managed to take some of the air out of the match. There was a potential upset there when she was up a break in the second set. And yet it didn't feel that sort of seismic or huge. But I think that's what she wanted. She's so in control of her game. She's got such big power. She can rock you back, but it never feels excessive or not like it's under her control. And she almost just, I don't know, puts a sort of sleeper hold on her opponent and just keeps plugging away with these big shots, but she's also got nice touch and I think she's quite deceptive in a way. I think she's quite hard to read where she's heading the ball. I was really impressed with her. She's never too high or too low, emotionally, I think she really understands what she can do and what she can't. And that's three slams in a row, where she's been a factor, really, in terms of, okay, she's played fewer and fewer matches, but that's because she keeps running into ego's film tech earlier and earlier, but that's twice now that she's pushed to be on tech and as you were saying, also impressed with fion tech the way she won so many games to use on her serve. There were lots of lots of tricky moments that she came through and then just that acceleration right at the end of the second set. She did really well in those games, studied hit in the backhand down the line using her return, which she spoke about as one of her great strengths and yeah, just showed her just showed that the level is there if she can find it, but generally I thought it was a really good match and I was in sort of encourage for both players really I suppose. It feels like it was a good day of results and the women's side for the tournament for how the tournament could possibly shape up over there the days and weeks to come David's giving me a look like getting ahead of yourself. No, I'm right on board. There were some good matches, some good performances, some reminders of why these players are exciting and they're all still in.

"Summer by any real stretch of definitions in terms of health and only winning two matches since making Miami final. She's in the mix, you know, whether it's someone like Zhang Qing Wen, who steps up and it's in the mix or someone who you learn niemeyer. I mean, how do you even look like a possible top ten player at this tournament? I felt like in terms of just her level looks like, or gibber can find another way to level up even more. Sabalenka can keep getting better or whatever it is. That's some recency bias that serves to who I'm naming there. But there's, you know, people who can be in the coco golf, you know, like the various check teenagers. There's people who are in the mix potentially. I actually thought that one of the toughest challenges for you got to go back to looking at Osaka straw could have been Danielle Collins. I don't think it's older. I don't think it's the longest window to be a long-term contender for ego potentially, but Collins did beat iga pretty handily in that I'll show you an open semifinal and has a game that I think it matches up really well against egos. And so Collins lost in three sets in the fourth round to sabalenka that could have been her semifinal potentially. Anyway, so it's interesting time. One of the players I want to mention in the women straw. In terms of people who made it deep ish is just pagola who reached the quarterfinals lost three and 6 to Sean tech and I thought it was actually really, really good for shunty because that was coming off the nee Meyer when I sort of said before the match, I thought it would be a breakthrough win for whoever won that match because at this condition were much more pagola friendly, the low zipping cords to lightbulbs. I think these are very good conditions for pagola and China tech still had not seen comfortable and I think that was kind of for me the mattress is sort of unlocked like being able to overcome that. And pegula, it should be said played pretty bad in a lot of stretches. It was disappointing from her. And she started really well. I think she was up early. And then barely one points for a while. But yeah, but it's a winner there, but shout out to just Google who is a top fiver and really deservedly so when we look at her results and just love to see almost every big tournament. In this era of. Rich women's mertens in some ways where she always does what she's expected to do, but the bar she keeps raising the bar, and she keeps me in that bar by being now like, oh, she's number 8 she's going to make the quarterfinals. It's been that kind of reliability from Google this year. And that's been very rare on tour. Shout out to Google for just being a pro and being that person. Yeah, I think clearly the next step for her is to win more titles at any level really because she's, I think she only has one title, right? Washington. And that's the same kind of thing with soccer, yeah, where they're like a top player, but they don't actually win titles. It's interesting. Titles are what they are. This is kind of a Casper rude conversation. Because Casper ruby became was if I went to that 5th set, Casper is number one, having never won anything bigger than a two 50. Yeah. So that was very close to happening. And then tennis. And I do want to talk one more woman or two more women actually, but then you can switch them out. But yeah, I do think that it's very interesting. What is the title mean? We'll talk about root in a bit. Let's say that for the root conversation because I didn't think he's worth talking about on its own. One woman I want to get a brief shot to before going to our exiting goat. Who has our last part? I didn't see this live. I wasn't watching this match. I didn't commentate on it afterwards, but gosh, the scene of Taylor Townsend addressing Patrick McEnroe, on court. The audacity and I don't even know what the word is for this. The lack of self awareness of whoever put McEnroe in that position for that match. Is shocking. And I was glad that Taylor, who's been great. I did a long interview with her for racket for their, I think it's on their website during the French Open and her comeback and she said she'd been feeling fitter than ever and she made the doubles final with Katie mcnally lost to Kutcher. Anyway, I just thought it was a remarkable closing scene of some sort of movie where they got to tell off the person and sort of like pretty woman it's not like big mistake, huge or something to touch it backward. But even better, she had the trophy in her hands in that moment, but I thought that was just something that deserves comment on because people can read if they don't know about Patrick McEnroe and Taylor Townsend and the issues she went through with her being judged by the USDA for her weight as a teenager and patchwork was very much sort of the face of that decision when that happened. Yeah, so I just thought that was did you see that video cloud sun until Townsend? Yeah, I saw it. And I'm not surprised by it. I think she's very, I think she's she's bored and especially these days.

"The quarterfinals and in my daily predictions everywhere I could possibly back him. I was backing davidovich for kina. That's a bad loss. I think telling Greek sport the Dutchman. He's had a lot of really kind of heartbreaking losses on the clay this season. A memory lost 7 5 in the third to CFO and Esther really lost a final set tiebreak to her action in Madrid. He lost a three setter to Felix auger Ali asim. I think after 7 for the match in Rome, and he just hasn't been able to build on that Monte Carlo final where he was fantastic that tournament and look, it's a heart pick. I love his tennis. I love his pet adoption agency. I love his odd socks. I just think he's great. And I think it's a shame he's out because he's a fun time. It's a good result that for Alexander's who beat Sebastian oftener today very comfortably because he was the he was the really dodgy potential opponent in his quarter. So good result for him. Other notable results today, what did we have? I think we've just had a win for leyla Fernández. Over Christina devic late on long lens. I think that one. That's my prediction for the day one. And Sloane Stephens was a winner today. That was my pleasure. Yeah, so the end of that, actually. And that was the match proceeding Isner. I literally just thought I'll pop into the long run to have a look, but I was so taken by the position of where you watch. I thought, I ended up being there for the next hour and a half. But Stevens was thrilled with that win. Actually, I mean, she came, she came through a difficult time in that match. And you know, she's had a really difficult time generally on the court. She's had no wins of note. And you could tell she was chuffed a bit, and just searching, you know, searching for some form. I was impressed with how she fought after losing the first set. He never quite know with Stevens if she's not fancying it. And her opponent qualifier duel nee Meyer, another one who just stormed through qualifying barely barely losing a game, Stevens can just sort of go, don't fancy this. Yeah. And she didn't today. She was prepared to go to the dark places and I'm impressed with that tennis. As I always say, is the better for a dialed in Sloane Stephens. However, that might be where my predicting of Sloane Stephens success ends. I feel like this is a charity. You need to know where to cut your losses and run. Explain Stevens. Just turn the lights on as if it's chucking out time at the pub. I mean, I think it quite literally is checking out. I think all of the, all of the matches have finished. Yes, the app tells me there is currently low, no live match. Which means we have to wait until tomorrow schedule, which looks like this. We start on the Philippe chatrier court with the world number one eager schwinn tech against leisha sirenko, then it's Diane parry who David was Googling earlier today. Earmarking a potential upset. He's decided against him. I decided against it after some very selfless advice from that. I see why you were going there because Barbara kuche, the defending champion, hasn't played a match. On clay this season, she's she's there to be upset surely. I'm just not a sure Diane parry is the one despite Diane Perry's recent we're never medicine English. Did not pick up any she's very good David and he said she recently beat Madison English. And nobody knew what to do with that. Then we have Rafael Nadal. This 13 time champion kicking off his campaign against Jordan Thompson and the first night session slots tomorrow goes to the men's world number one Novak Djokovic against yoshihito nishioka, kicking things off on Suzanne long then tomorrow at 11 a.m. is Amanda anisimova against Naomi Osaka. That match shouldn't be there, should it? No. I don't think it should be at that time of day. I'm not sure which match it should displace on the shatter air court. Well, Kathy and I were talking about that earlier and I thought Catherine put it very, very well. And I'll let her explain it, but the way I see it is you've got three days to pay the first round and there's two possible days that for sarcasm over could be on because each half of the draw is over two days. And yes, she's playing on the same side of the draw as English film tech, but real quick she cover. Rafa Nadal and that Djokovic here on those days as well. But you don't need to schedule all those matches necessarily on the same day. You know, you could you could get a soccer on chat tray as well as anissa mova. You say, right? That is the best first round match we have. Which it certainly is. It's a priority that that has to be on chatrier. And you work from there. You work backwards from there, because without question in those conversations, they're working back from a place of Djokovic and Dao both have to go on. I hope that they also put on tech in that in that category, but yeah, for me, in that conversation in the same bracket should be, and it's over in Osaka has to go on saturated, work back from that point. And I understand the point that a number of people that have made to us, which is undoubtedly a factor which is that Japanese TV that pay a lot of money for these tournaments they are very invested in tennis will have requested that slot the 11 a.m. slot. Because that's 6 p.m. in that 6 p.m. Japanese time. But American TV will have requested as latest lot as.
