Event in california with steve farber a by zoom been korea national conference and other national conferences. And i'm headed to necker island again To meet with richard branson. And i hope to come back with some amazing stories not too great so it will be fun and it'll be very interesting as it has been in the past. Today we have a guest on the show and his name is sam. Spillers sam is the product manager for being i online at being global He has been involved with deny online since its inception march twenty twenty and actually little before that with Some of the countries in asia but globally it had expanded in march. He'll chapters around the world transition to the online meeting format at the start of the pandemic and has continued to provide day-to-day customer support to ensure equality meeting experience. He conduct customer research and manages projects geared toward driving innovation and increasing member value. I can't think of anyone better to have on to talk about an online and hybrid chapter sam. Welcome to be an eye podcast. Thank you very much ivan for that introduction. It is fantastic to me here. It's great having you on a talk. A little bit about being i online and why you think it is effective absolutely So you know. Of course i online was formed out of necessity after a few years of the organization recognizing the potential power of it for the future of bni. But of course you know. Through through the pandemic we were able to enjoy a lot of success in a lot of ways using online exclusively as the as the meeting format platform And you know as we are now a year and a half into be an eye on lines life. We of course have kept a very close eye on on some of the kpi. Some of the metrics that that drive our business and the don't knows a key performance indicator the things that drive our business as sam. Jason yes. Thank you and You know so metric such as overall membership then member retention member. Nps scores these are all metrics that we follow closely of course and we've enjoyed increased. Nps score is net promoter score. That's happiness score basically. Are you happier satisfied with what you're getting. Nps yes absolutely. That's of course something that every business owner should be keeping an eye on with their customer. Base so all of these Metrics that listed have. We've we've enjoyed an increase in them using be an eye on line largely as the as the operating engine Other key metrics to the bmi model of course thank you for close business in referrals You know they saw a small decrease at the start of the pandemic worse it's very large business disruption that took place last year and You know they really. They quickly returned those pre pandemic levels. And i think business in in referrals during this online era so you know in the last twelve months. The i has generated eighteen point three billion dollars. Us dollars in. Thank you close business. That's amazing and again using you'll be an eye online largely as the operating engine so we're quite proud that. Yeah i mean. I i get it with members. I created an in person networking organization. I get it online. Has some issues but i ask everyone to think about this. What if this had happened twenty years ago. What if it happened thirty years ago. There was no technology like this. We would virtually all be out of business. I mean every one of our members would be struggling. even more than many of them are and Either that or we would be going out and about and we'd have many more of people ill and die and so yeah you know. Maybe the online's not quite as good as that handshake but there are benefits. And i think you're going to talk about some of the. The alternative defected. This technology exists is a blessing. And i had someone say to me not long ago. Sam did she told a member who was whining about she said whining about zoom fatty. And she said buck up. Buttercup you know you could be out of business. This is fantastic that we can do business online. Now i mean said that We do have chapters in areas that are gradually becoming safer and there's hybrid meetings. They're taking place. And that's when. I know the members want to hear about your yes absolutely So we really what we do as a product team here. The n i is it. We are very passionate about listening to our members. We conduct a lot of customer research. A lot of surveys and one thing that we found is through a variety of surveys over. The course of this year is There is a strong appetite for hybrid chapters as you referenced. Ivan so you. We have officially offered launch this offering for chapters around the world as of october. Twenty twenty one and you know really all chapters or just select chapters so all chapters. As of october twenty twenty one are able to participate in the hybrid format and what we define the hybrid format as again after a lot of Extensive research is the first meeting of the month. Takes place in person to the first week of the month. Meeting is in person you enjoy your handshakes in your coffee. You're venues venues. Usually would and then the rest of the meetings of the month take place using bni online so that members can again enjoy that The camaraderie those handshakes building relationships. That we've all known to love and through the in person traditional meaning setting but also be able to enjoy the flexibility that a lot of members prefer with benign online too. And you know we really recognized. That members want that ability to both build strong relationships while not sacrificing time savings and ultimately become accustomed to the united ads. I know there are some members chomping at the bit here. We're not saying you have to go hybrid. We're seeing if you were if chapters if it's safe from a health perspective to meet in person you can continue to meet in person it. We have over seven hundred chapters as of right now. That started started online. They've never met in person. They're likely to not want to go to hybrid. So median online is.

"Ride if you live here in. La like me that shaves hours off so you could actually be in your green zone win. The time is there. And that's what top performers do they understand this to such a high level and i'd love to talk a little bit more about what you learned in your research for this book from top performers. We jokingly talked about hacks but they understand themselves and how to leverage those gifts to the best of their ability. That's what makes them top performers while the rest of us feel like we're playing catch up. So here's a quality that always amazed me about the best leaders. I've met like you. I have the privilege of interviewing some of the best in the world for what i do and again. It's one of those things that if you can get into that deadzone zone that space where you do this repeatedly you're like how do i even get paid for this like this. My life like it's a. It's a good day most days. But what i've noticed and you've probably seen this like when they show up. They're not distracted. They have all the time in the world for you. They make you think like they've done all kinds of research. Which often they have done and they're never rushed hurried. I've never been to necker island but apparently if you go. Richard branson greets you there. And i've had friends who have been and he just acts like he's not running hundreds of companies but like oh nice to see you get you want something to drink. You want to sit on the beach. What do you want to do. You want to go up for jet ski like let me know and what that is is. They've learned how to say no they know what's important so that when something one one of the things. I encourage people to do with their time as reject the whole idea of living a balanced life. I think it's a waste of time. Because number one tried it for many years and have never succeeded and secondly you ever notice that balanced people never seem to change the world passionate people do. And so what i encourage people to do is give up on the idea. Balance because balance feels like a retreat balances like. I'm going to do less at work. I'm going to do less of this. I'm going to do less of that. I don't wanna do less with my life. But i want to carefully choose what i decided to do. More of and now. I wanna do is whatever i allow on my calendar. I wanna pursue passions if i'm going to do a podcast i'm gonna prep well if i'm going to write a book. I'm really going to go deep if i'm going to meet with this key client. I am going to go in prepared. If i'm going to read my kids bedtime stories. I'm not gonna skip pages. okay. I'm not gonna do that little where you pretend. There was no extra page. And they won't notice because they're little. I can be fully present. If i'm in a sleep. I sleep for seven or eight hours. Not apologize for it and refueling my body because there was a quote from seventeenth century eighteenth century figure. John wesley who said set a person on fire with passion and people come from miles to watch him burn. And i think there's something very true to that so what i wanna do what i allow on my calendar whether that social or work related or speaking engagements i wanna do passionately and then it's no to all the rest is greg mcewan says and the paraphrase of his book from essential ism but a scale of one to ten. If it's not a nine it's zero. And i think a lot of us allow our lives to be filled with sixes sevens and eights. We know what to do with the twos and threes. It's like non not gonna do that but we get so overwhelmed because our life. Our calendar is a whole series of like six sevens and eights so as a filter for decision. Making if you're going to show up it's a nine out of ten and then you're going to be fully present. You're going to go all there. I i love this and that and we're in this world where abundance now is what everyone has..

"And yeah because it introduces liquidity. So when i started thinking about The the transition from so bitcoin to blockchain. Okay because i know my first exposure was while peer to peer currency. That's really cool and then it was kind of like what can you do with it. And what can you do with the underlying technology. And then i started. Think wow this is like tcp ip for assets. You know so when you could use to have a a you know a fax. I write something on a paper. Stick it in a machine. Digitize it senate over analog phone line at a very expensive rate through monopoly telco and income out on the other side and now you could just put it on screen type your words drop it into a transport layer through internet email internet boom it pops over there like in just nanoseconds so so the lowering friction unlock value. And i thought wow like if this is a tcp ip assets. What can you do. And i got my head around that. And i threw my first blockchain summit on necker island like six years ago. And i got michael. Casey who wrote age of cryptocurrency. He was at the time the Global finance reporter for the wall street journal. I asked him if he come. Throw this thing with me. And i wanted to to get this economist to join named hernandez soto and i don't know if you've ever read the book mystery of capital it's a foundational piece that defines. What is the fundamental building block of capitalism. And why do things work. In capitalist societies in the west but not other places and his thesis was in his world it all went down to clarity of land title as an asset. Because if you if you were a squatter you didn't have anything. If you had a clear line drawn around low piece of land you owned you could take that to the bank and mortgage it and get capital and start a store. And then you had this like network effect where you're leveraging that and taking the the money in and going and you know turning it into something so i said hernando i wanna take mystery of capital and turn it into a software program. I wanna basically automate your brain and turn it into a a software stack where people could load assets on to it and then they could be used in smart contracts to build and i wanna do this on the single blockchain any any said what's blockchain so i'd explain it to them okay so so back to the unlocking value. I explained to them in this way because he had told me that he had bought a rug. And and i said well think of this. It's like you know there's ebay this mocatta library where you bought your rug because he's easing Said before that rug was listed it had zero was sitting in someone's garage..

But you know if if that paid meltdown happens like we talked about a few minutes ago I think he's going to be one more try to pick up pieces I don't know if he can get up into the top four super the top five for the super high five but he can definitely be one that will be gaining ground late. "I don't know how much derby influence this feels can have. But I'll tell you what I think. There are some really nice horses in here. That WanNa do this one turn mile and see if maybe one of them can Can Get the job done and move forward on that Derby trailing. Yeah Yeah I think it's a pretty nice field You know may not be an contain any derby contenders like you said but you know. I certainly think they're handful in here. Who are going to make this an entertaining an interesting race. The one I could see four or five of them winning. It's one where he'd probably end up having a spread but there were of them that I was kind of interested in You know what a horse that. I'm pretty fond of the Montauk traffic. I like young horses. Who are able to overcome adversity. And that's exactly what. This horse did First Time that was just Don't know what happened. She dwelt early and he did. And that was the end of it from the rail in the slop at Laurel you toss that race and and I mean he did exactly what you want a prospect to stretching out prospect to do he was able to sit able to make a run and pass runners and he was impressive in both of his next two wins the maiden when Downstairs in the and the Wingfield win. Also at seven eighths Settled inside didn't have a problem kicked out and And was able to run away from his competition. So I I don't think a mile Distance will be much of a problem for him. I just don't know how much upside he really has. You know. He's a gritty horse and He's one that I wanNA use but the one who I'M GONNA put on top of the three wars stop or I love the way that he improved. First Time in Blaker is just second time on dirt last time here at the The Mile trip here and act when I turned in a big beyer speed figure went right to the front And just kept on going. I think he is one that I want to keep an eye on moving forward. I think he'll be a decent prospect stretching out to to turn on the on the dirt and I'm GONNA give shops go right from his maiden win to Earning grade three status here in the In the Gotha. Yeah. I'm definitely. He's my topic as well. I'm a big fan of wall stopper. I liked what I saw from him. First Time Out Less time out rather when he got the meeting win. First Time blinkers. I should say now. That was a big effort. Thought Mischievous Alex might have some distance limitations. But it's hard to argue. How good he's been in his last two starts. Since his trainer John Service added the blinkers to his repertoire. I don't think six does without a chance from an ever Keough. Sauna current one turn mile. Got The goose ca pedigree on the bottom. I don't know how far this was gonna WanNa go with the one turn. Mile shouldn't be a problem and Necker island Friday he won going a mile in the slop. At Churchill downs just stopped got out running swell last time. The miles should be more to his Liking as he's already won distance and we'll see him. I under neath. I think it's wide open. I think war stopper shows up. They're all running the second money. I'm a big fan of his An of all these sources. I think him He's probably the one most likely to move on the Derby Trail. Regardless of what happens tomorrow. He can get beat tomorrow and maybe still move forward. I'd like to see him win But if he got beat I'd still think he can be contender. Might be the only one more stop for both of us in the grade. Three three hundred thousand dollar.

The court thirty one to one by the way. Yeah so Mike. Mike Battaglia appointing line. which was assailed by people as being too high I? It's up the release right at this point as being pretty accurate. Yeah and right now if you look at it. Storm the court. Fifteen to one William Hill but William Hill right now is the one seen the underlying as far as offshore overseas and at Churchill downs. Everybody at thirty one thirty three to one in Homs springs the bait winter last week for Todd pletcher ninety two one Now he did win in a pile so at least these guys at least he's not having to move off of a six furlong bait when he's got the eight panels under garth. But WE'LL Z ninety. Two one fairly fairly homeless crisis Fletcher Train Eight. That's one of only two are actually yet. Free agree on the Kentucky Derby Wager where the odds drifted in the last day. One of the other ones was all others but in this case pulse restricted right into his market market rice offshore overseas and William Hill looking at ninety nine plus two one on premier star was a huge disappointment newly yesterday in Tampa Tampa The Navarro Trade. That couldn't even keep pace was thought of as being a loose potential leader. Couldn't even keep pace early. I do not factor huge DRIFTA hundred William Hill silver state. We'll see in the first division of the Risen Star Silver State or Steve Asks asks in one of the voices out of the Aspen Barn and we do at some point today. Have to talk about the South American import that was so good yesterday and and may not even be dirt horse and debuted in North America for Asmussen and company at oaklawn wins the Oaklawn six a money allowance allowance and was nine ten length winner. saw like sort of in passing. And then you look a little bit more into who. She was Loretta seat that I believe. And they're going to revisit eighty-nine buyer. I made an effort to look it up and I don't even think she's a third horse. Ah That's the funny part. Sober state fifty five to one off the fifty to one morning this could be an overlay right there Thirty five to one William Hill Hill fifty to one drifted to that point offshore. So this one. Keep an eye on this prices. Well if you're shopping for an overlay with silver state well silver state has had had three straight the eighties buyers eighty two in the winning debut. Then got about a sixty day. Break came back second in an allowance to Necker island whose well L. regarded before debuting is a three year old in the lacob and being between enforceable and Mr Monoploy in that spot and comes from off the pace and clearly silver state a hard spun out of an empire maker.
"necker island" Discussed on The Travel Wins
"For the for. The price of the company pays for them. So I don't know. Is that something you has even think about or is it? Just you gotta go. I mean most of our most travels because you know we need to get there and so it you know I I you know for me I think about the the the other line choices it kind of just that they're able to get you know your your your window window your I'll if you need now it just means you get there more rested and you come back more rested and it's all kind of better now for the rest of your week. That's kind of my main driver You know versus the whole points thing Every now and then we'll do a company off site and go someplace and we'll just cash in points on on things like that sort of points that that's kind of more our model Also Company. There's not a whole ton of travelers. It's really you know. Just just Ryan's team you know in in the design and development and myself you know being being mostly direct consumer company. We're actually not spending time shows more the launch events and the different kinds of stuff. We're doing you know riding my on on your end Johnson I was GonNa ask you about that because you are a direct to consumer and I mean you have some breakfast or with norstroms but I mean I would think the majority of Businesses Director Summers. That crap Definitely Lar- large majority. And that's how we that's when we started up we were kind of one of generation of companies that was born in this in this digitally native era. Yeah and actually my background check. I met Ryan Ryan has a long background but he and I met and really started getting excited about the future of retail. What is going to look like next Which you know with his his gift for product and brand and then together thinking about where. Few retail going We launched online. And that's a huge percent of what we do. Yeah and obviously northwestern great partner on the kids side You know and that's important because kids growing you. Want to measure their feet and all that but Really everything else we're doing is Direct consumer and I. I know 'cause my industries similar We just had a boot come called. Tacoma's and their drugs to direct-to-consumer BOOT company and they hit it hard I mean really hard on. Espn advertising and and obviously social media. And they're everywhere for a while I got started was a big deal in our industry. Well there's been a lot of press about you know no secret. There's a lot of change going on in the industry in You know that could be really tough. I think for for the established you know kind of players who have especially a lot of retail investment in. And you know physical storefront But you know for the new brands that start to join NATO. It's really exciting time. You can put product out there. You have a national audience from from day. One even international lot in from day one and You know it leads to a lot of different kinds of opportunity. It's partnerships for us. You know things like what we're doing with virgin as a super exciting ways to get the word out and all that that sort of thing but it does shift where he's been your time and and what kinds of things focus on absolutely. Yeah and I was GONNA say I. Mean PERCENTAGE WISE. What percentage is kids business versus adults? Almost all of You know these days You know kind of in the Industry. I kid is You know generally a pretty small fraction of most companies for us because we started in kid. It's it's always been stronger. It's going to be stronger. Yeah but it really kind of adult has has overtaken and Yeah that's that's kind of an exciting place to be because now it's not a product for one person in the family. It's a product for everyone in the family. Sure I well Giving like hit percent of our footwear is kids still and then it's literally almost twenty five and twenty five between men's the men's little bit heavier about thirty and thirty and twenty but With women's being very still very difficult to you know what when want. I boats in the larger context. Yeah Yeah but the kids are steady for us. I mean we. We kinda focused on it and kids always need new shoes. I mean that's just the way it is so. I thought it was very smart that you guys did that. That's that's why another reason why I was excited to talk so in. The world is your digital digitally based company. Or what do you call it native digitally or did digital native yeah you don't have social social media influencers and the kids rains so. I mean 'cause I know a Lotta the adult brands but would try and tie into a celebrity or whatever and get a social media influence her to wear their shoes and wear it out type of thing but being in kids. I'd be a little bit different. I would think yeah it. It's been on this thing where we actually have a lot of A lot of big celebrities kids who who were play shoes. Yeah we've taken the line that the kids didn't sign up to be celebrities and have probably rod seeing We don't want to you know further that and so even uh there's you know there's lots of photos out there of you know celebrities. Kids wearing place us we. We don't believe in promoting that Which is you know. Obviously plus and minus. It's I think it's good for the kids Not as good for us from marketing standpoint. But I think that's the right thing to do and as long as you get out that you don't do that before those reasons. I think it could turn into a benefit. So obviously you know anybody listening to podcasts over here that you have to look at alternative things right. I mean as far as using influencers. Or if you don't have your your brick and mortar stores you. You're fighting Amazons. Apples you're fighting all the other big digital companies for space. Yeah I I think one of the you know. One of the assets of being direct to consumer digitally native in particular is it gives you a tool for for engagement and interaction with your With your audience with your consumer group right and so they do. I'm really partner partners with you and what you're doing building and so it's a very much of A. There's some products in that relationship and it grows in its nurtured and so in in place of you know maybe having the the exposure of of retail space we have lots of customers who are who are sharing and On social media experiences with the brand but they like and don't like and then we respond to that and then that creates greater engagement and it really informs what we do in our strategy with a product standpoint and and Where we're going and what we can do better and And it's what people are really happy about two when you also have A. I think that you're doing is interacting with your consumers with especially with the kids the different customization things that you that you provide as far as the velcro tabs and all that kind of thing where you can. They can interchange him. And that's that's kind of cool for the kids to see it coming on recently. It's been really. Fun is the ability for for people to print their own components. Yeah so we launched pretty recently. I had a designer cool. There's something going in and literally upload you know their own heart Drawings photos and have that printed and then arrive at their place pretty quick in the mail and that. That's just a lot of fun things creating. Ah I know. There's another very old based company. Yeah Congress that allows you to customize their shoes online. They have that tool. He hasn't seen that. But where did they allow you to change in guys? I mean that's I think that's very cool for you guys to do. I like I. Do you know the thing I mean. It really is something pressing. We Here in Sausalito California and so you just see the this stuff actually coming off the printer and going out pretty exciting. Yeah I agree. What's the best way I appreciate the time? I'll let you guys enjoy your weekend. But what's the best way for people to to reach out and see what you got going on and and find you guys? Hey thanks thanks for asking. That's a that's a great dimension it's it's play dot co silly on our site Daily DOT CO and Yeah happy for people to come. Check US out on instagram. It's go play. I think that's right. That's right and twitter instagram. Google play on twitter or Lincoln. It's just play and and Facebook as well the perfect. I appreciate the time guys that I enjoy your your trips. I'll be looking forward to seeing your your your pictures or anything you have from necker island of course Thanks we I look forward to sharing a row with you when you take the window and I'll take the island. We'll we'll be good to go. Well Yeah only only if we can get Branson to allow us to off the blacklist. I put it in a good word. Maybe I'm wearing your shoes. Maybe he'll let me put into request. I appreciate it guys. Thanks for your time when things are fun..

"There for my team who need gardens on aid help on eight support and you know really leading from inside out and I think think too often. We're all about like a lot of people sort of out there. What's in these for me but when you can actually start to lead from within that's a whole different level of leadership yeah absolutely absolutely leading with your heart Yeah So so you gain financial freedom pretty early on in your journey. A think by Sonia investments investments in the business. And all that sort of thing. What would be the biggest tip that you could give someone about gaining financial freedom? You ever financially free. I'd let us out and have any. He did it it. It's a it's a it's a phrase it gets thrown around these days is financial freedom thing and I think it's different for everybody. Everybody I think again like with anything I say. Reverse engineer the life you want okay. Sorry I didn't understand that early in the piece all on you was. It was the right thing to go in and investing property because I needed to set myself up so that I would have something for when I retired. That was a simple as it was but what I realized was was that investing early meant that I had grossing property and equity that enabled me to setup. Businesses travel do you some of the professional like you know go to Necker Island. Do the things that I've wanted to do in my life now. We're all driven by different purpose for some. You know being able to send three kids to a private school is purpose and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that or give the kids something that we never got. That's their purpose or whether it's somebody who volunteer not at the local nursing home that's purpose so purpose takes shape for us in all different ways but I think when we talk about financial freedom and I say these declines. This is like if you could have everything you wanted financially you know what would that look like now within raisin I mean you know if if they're being not so serious about it then you know. It's something that you've really got to get to the roots of but I look at what a wine aid. How much do I need to survive? What do I need to do and is my life? Really about accumulating Eh sits or is it about making memories and having a lifestyle so they're the sorts of things that some of the questions that we ask and I think really you know I I really I believe law in having a vision and I think vision board. Really good Certainly I've got one manifesting. Things I think is really important. You know being able to be clear about goals but goal setting we we again. We just throw that around like yeah. I've got some goals yet. But how often do you review them. How often do you actually look at them? And how often do you sit down and go. How close am I to achieving any nor why and usually that's got some fee attached to it that achieving that goal has got some fees attached to it so it's really about China unpack what those fees are and? I've got some tips in the book that talks about that but for me it was about picturing the life that I wanted and then being able to go right. So what am I doing to get towards that. What do I need one of the resources I need? And what's the advice that I need and surrounding myself with people that can help me on that journey as well so getting no advises very expensive. It's funny people balk at getting advice because it is expensive but you know advice. This is more expensive because the mistakes that can be made the time that's wasted and you know the do it yourself. Route is not always the best round and I think I know that if I'm trying I put something together at home. I'd rather spend one hundred bucks to get at assembled and spend two days trying to work it out you know and it's not different to what you're doing in terms uh-huh of your own financial future if you don't get the right advice and set yourself up in the right way whether it's in business or impersonal. You'll make a lot of mistakes and I did that. I mean I think I don't know how many websites we went through before we knew that. Hey we should probably vista appropriate development of the I call it the the black hole of the web we. We've we've been on that one not always tape advice and now advises is certainly not not not a good strategy. That is that is excellent supplies so gonNA leave it a ton of links in the shower nights for the book and some of the other things that you've mentioned today and thank you so you've been very generous with your knowledge as as I was reading about on the weekend but if there was one piece of advice that you could leave Allison's with what would it be. Just go go for it. I honestly I then said as Cliche and I'm not just saying like a Nike Ad. Just do it. I actually really mean it. I think where only he wants and you want to give it the best shot shot you can. I mean if you're feeling that you're not energized. By what you do on a day-to-day basis then change it. Diagnosed at don't put stuff under the carpet because that's the easy way to go and just exist where you know. Life is too precious just to exist really have a goal and I think that there's a solution to everything so just unpack it and get clear about what you try to achieve brilliant.
