A highlight from News Block: FASB Change Bullish for Bitcoin, Surging Oil Prices, America's Savings Slump, FTX Liquidations & Ripple Acquires Fortress

"Welcome to the CoinStories news block. I'm Nathalie Brunel and in the span of just 10 minutes, roughly the same time it takes to mine a new Bitcoin block, I'll provide you with concise, insightful updates on Bitcoin and the global financial landscape so you're well informed on the week's top stories. Everything you need to know, in one place, in one block. Let's go. Fair value accounting is officially coming to Bitcoin and this development could mark a turning point for the adoption of Bitcoin at the corporate level. The Financial Accounting Standards Board, better known as FASB, voted unanimously to adopt new rules that would require businesses to report their Bitcoin holdings at fair value, meaning at the current market value. This is a major improvement that will allow companies to recognize both losses and gains on their Bitcoin holdings, just like other financial assets such as stocks and bonds. Prior to this recent FASB decision, companies had to treat Bitcoin as an intangible asset and the way those are reported require the company to record the price it originally paid for the asset, so in this case Bitcoin, and then reassess the value each quarter. If the asset value goes down during that time, the company has to mark the loss on its balance sheet. This is called an impairment loss. But if the value of that asset increases during that time, companies cannot mark the value of the asset back up, so they get hit with all the price drops and don't get to benefit from any of the price gains. And for an asset as volatile as Bitcoin, this has made holding it very prohibitive for companies. When companies have to mark down the value of an asset on their balance sheet, it negatively impacts their earnings report, and earnings often drive a company's stock price, valuation, and overall performance. This problem prompted Bitcoin industry leaders to request that FASB create new rules that would require businesses to use fair value accounting. After FASB declined this request on three separate occasions, it is finally voted to change them. Businesses holding Bitcoin will now get to mark their Bitcoin holdings when the price goes up and down during a quarter, eliminating some of the impairment losses on their balance sheets, and allowing them to more accurately report the value of their Bitcoin. The new FASB rules will become mandatory for all private and public companies beginning in 2025. What used to be a barrier of entry for companies considering buying Bitcoin is now close to becoming a thing of the past. And it's developments like this in the bear market that lay the foundation for the coming bull market. Okay, so soon it will be easier for corporations to put Bitcoin on their balance sheets, and many will need to as we enter what many analysts believe will be a more inflationary decade. A major factor that will influence the inflation picture moving forward is the price of oil, and lately it has been surging. Crude oil is up nearly 25 % in the last three months alone and recently hit a 10 -month high. One reason for the price increase is the combination of increasing demand and falling supply. Last week, OPEC +, the organization of the petroleum exporting countries led by Saudi Arabia and Russia, announced they will extend their production cuts until the end of the year. This latest OPEC Plus announcement comes as global oil supply is at the lowest level since 1985. At the same time, world oil demand recently exceeded pre -pandemic levels and continues to rise. If the demand is rising and supply is dropping, the price will likely continue to go up. And oil is strongly correlated with CPI inflation because it is an important input in nearly all sectors of the economy, from the direct production of goods to transporting them and helping power global supply chains. And when oil prices rise, gasoline prices at the pump typically follow suit, and that's exactly what we're seeing today. The cost of gasoline is a significant expense for households, and prices at the pump have increased year over year for the first time since February 2022. This latest surge in the price of gasoline doesn't bode well for the White House or the Federal Reserve's fight against inflation. Last time gas prices rose, the White House fought that increase by draining the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to levels not seen in 40 years. And that's our nation's stockpile of oil reserves, meant to be used in case of emergencies. Now the SPR remains depleted, with gasoline prices rising once again. The price of oil remains an X factor in the inflation picture. If these supply and demand dynamics do not improve, we could be entering a period of sustained higher inflation, and in that environment, owning scarce hard assets like Bitcoin is one way investors could potentially protect their savings. And speaking of savings, U .S. households badly need the ability to save and store value into the future. Saving rates are at the lowest level since the global financial crisis. Despite this, people are still out there spending, even though things are getting more expensive. Credit card debt is now at record levels, and the average interest on those credit cards stands at a ridiculously high 28%. This is a worrying trend, and this only serves to increase the fragility in the overall financial system. People are putting things on credit cards because the level of excess savings accumulated during the pandemic has been dwindling. During and even after lockdown, stimulus checks and various fiscal programs sent money directly to consumers, resulting in about $2 trillion in excess savings for U .S. families. This cushion was super useful, especially as the cost of living began to soar over the last three years. But that cushion has been deflating. Households have steadily drained their excess savings for 23 straight months, and now, if the current rate holds, the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco expects these savings to run out in the current quarter. If we reach a point where these savings run dry, what happens next? More than half of respondents in a recent Bloomberg survey expect personal consumption to shrink by early 2024. This isn't great news for a consumer -driven economy and, ultimately, for employment. It has never been more evident that these households desperately need a money that holds its value over time and cannot be inflated away. And finally this week, let's touch on some crypto news affecting Bitcoin. Bitcoin's price remaining volatile, dropping back down toward $25 ,000. Some analysts are speculating this is related to fears over a potential liquidation of more than $550 million in Bitcoin connected to the FTX bankruptcy. On September 13, the U .S. Bankruptcy Court will decide whether or not to grant approval for FTX to liquidate billions worth of assets, including everything from cryptocurrency tokens to Bitcoin to beachfront real estate in the Bahamas. Many are speculating that FTX will obtain the green light. In July, FTX stated its intent to repay customers through a liquidation of its assets, so Bitcoin's recent price action could be related to the market beginning to price in this scenario. Another story that is increasing fear in the market is related to cryptocurrency custodian Fortress Trust. Surprising news came out last week that Fortress will be acquired by Ripple Labs, the issuer of XRP, for an undisclosed amount. The question became, why did Fortress sell now? News outlet The Block reported Monday that acquisition talks accelerated after it was revealed that Fortress client funds may have been compromised in a security breach involving a third -party analytics vendor. Fortress reported the incident in a string of tweets on September 7, stating that four Fortress customers were impacted by a security incident, but that no funds were lost. A spokesperson from Ripple told The Block that despite the security incident, the opportunity to buy Fortress made sense for Ripple in the long term, adding, Luckily, Ripple was in a position to act quickly to step in and make customers whole. That statement contradicts what Fortress has said publicly. So was there no loss of client funds as Fortress claims? And what would have happened to Fortress if Ripple had not been ready and willing to acquire the custodian? Now listen to this. BitGo CEO Mike Belshe summarized what happened on X, saying, When Fortress lost funds, they chose to omit facts about what happened, downplay the event, and conclude, most importantly, no funds were lost. Obviously, we now know this was not true. I guess what they meant to say is we believed we fixed the problem and we have taken steps to make sure clients are made whole, but those two statements are not even close to being the same. Now this situation certainly raises a lot of questions. In the aftermath of other high -profile cryptocurrency exchange and custodian bankruptcies, the market's appetite for this kind of news is extremely low. Some of Fortress' clients, including Bitcoin -only exchange Swan, confirmed that their customer's Bitcoin remains in insured cold storage wallets and did not move during this incident. Now we are still waiting for the full details of this acquisition and what exactly happened, but this serves as another important reminder of what can happen when investors trust third parties with their Bitcoin. We will say it again and again, not your keys, not your coins. Taking self -custody of your Bitcoin is the only bulletproof way for you to know with certainty that your Bitcoin is safe and free from counterparty risk. That's it for the News Block, your weekly Bitcoin and economic news update. I'm Nathalie Brunel. Make sure you're subscribed to Coin Stories so you never miss an episode. 11 Big Banks Create $30 Billion Rescue Package for First Republic

"11 big banks, including JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and more announced last night that they would take these somewhat theatrical step of depositing $30 billion worth of uninsured deposits into the troubled first republic bank. But even that move, along with the introduction of the fed's latest bailout window, it might still not be enough to quiet concerns about just how stable and safe the U.S. banking system really is, just this morning as we go to air, even with yesterday's rescue still in the headlines, we're seeing first republic stock trading down nearly 25%. Zach, we've had a backstop, a lending facility that lets banks basically exchange their get their cash back for bad investments made and essentially the best terms. And now the big banks are throwing cash at the problem also. What do you think it will take for the regulators to restore confidence in the banking system or is that something that we're not even really expecting at this point? Well, you know at first republic bank doesn't have the taint of crypto attached to it. That's the thing that stands out to me as it relates to its ability to survive while we see signature be wound down. Obviously this crisis is one of confidence. If you look at people who are researching this issue, pretty much all midsize banks are having this issue, right? They bought bonds that are now worth far less than what they were marked as on their books, right? So clearly, I think people are worried that this could spread to other banks across the country, not just those in California who service, tech firms, but again, those who have customers who are looking to find yields and who are realizing that in this interest rate environment, they can go elsewhere to get yield and they can take that money out of a bank quickly in the palm of their hand and deposit it in a money market account, but they can deposit it with treasuries at their own will, right? So I think clearly what we're seeing is a response to sort of this systemic reality in which we now find ourselves in where money is moving as fast as it ever has. Faster than ever indeed. And all of a sudden, billions and billions of dollars are being drawn out of these banks in hours time. It's quite remarkable and I think that's why we're seeing these remarkable steps.

Fresno County Health Officials Seeing an Increase of Covid Cases

"With new covid cases growing across the country, Fresno County health officials say they're noticing a surge in cases and younger populations, according to the data shared by the Health Department. Younger age groups are driving this surge. Now, If we look back to January of this year, when Covid 19 cases were surging people 65 older made up a big chunk of those early cases. Nearly 25%. Now they make up less than 15%. But 18 and younger category has done the opposite. They were at about 15% back in January. Now they make up nearly 20%. This is concerning because the under 18 population is not all eligible to be vaccinated. And so their only protection is the people around them. The Fresno County Department of Public Health is urging people to mask up if you're not vaccinated, the rules really haven't changed. That's Fox 26 news reporter. Shelby brought show,

"Of the $4 million of taxpayer dollars into other projects, which may prove fruitful. But we won't know for years when we have a solution right on the table, and what we keep saying is intervention. Equals prevention in the middle of a crisis. You first have to stop the bleed and save the life of a patient before you can treat other symptoms and other medical issues. It's the same principle for the health of our community. Yet our elected leaders will not do that. They've been hiding behind plexiglass for over a year now. Non in non in meetings. When the public cannot come and speak to them. They have to do it virtually. And and just last month we saw our mayor introduced a proposal to spend hundreds of thousands more dollars sprinkling around the city. And what we said is you're in the middle of a crisis right now and what he just proposed No action would be taken upon that proposal for at least a month. It was introduced in June. On June the seventh it was it was voted upon, and public Safety Committee on June the ninth. It won't be heard by the full council until July. The 12th so what we have had is over 100. More people shot nearly 25 more people killed. Since that was even announced. And that's what we keep saying. We are bleeding out as a community, and no one wants to do anything about it to triage the situation and take the emergency steps necessary and I'll tell you what required way past on the hour. I need to take a break, but but I want to want to ask you this last question. Which is how did we get to? Um and and to me? It's a It's a cultural issue. But where do we? How did we get to a place where on a Saturday night? Early Sunday morning. One AM folks in the 200 Block of South Meridian, right dead in the middle of what a lot of us call the bar district to the restaurant district in downtown Indianapolis. We're in a place where they felt comfortable discharging by some estimates up to 100 rounds. From guns. In the middle of downtown in the middle of the restaurant district. I don't understand how we got there. If I have heard that story 10 years ago, I just said not in my Indianapolis that just didn't happen. That's because we've had a fundamental change in philosophy of how would you criminal justice listen, justice exist by holding people accountable and ensuring there are consequences for bad acts. You can see a significant shift in just the homicide numbers starting in 2000 and 19 and going into 2000 and 20. What was the key factor that happened in that time frame? We had a change in prosecutor in this county, a prosecutor who unabashedly and unashamedly says that he wants to fundamentally restructure the way we do criminal justice. That sounds good until until you see that the devil is in the details until you see things like believing that we should not hold people accountable for those lower level offenses and cycling them right back out into the neighborhoods. If he says that he does not support that my question is what the heck are you doing? To make a change in that. Instead, we see sweetheart plea deals being offered to repeat convicted felons. We see charges being dismissed specifically gun charges being dismissed on violent offenders so that they can get a plea. Why would a violent offender agreed to a plea bargain that gives them very little jail time and also doesn't include gun offenses. Because they know the consequences are severe for that. And yet we see this fundamental ship and what we see is politics being placed over people and as though we are we're seeing a prosecutor that is Saying the sound bites that are believed to be needed to earn votes. That is just wrong, my friend because what we are seeing are the very people that we say we're trying to help are being slaughtered in our neighborhoods and I'm going to tell you we have many folks within our community. That just don't have any sense of hope. Many don't believe because of the violence that we are seeing that they're going to live past 2021 22 years of age, And so when you talk to them, they'll tell you I'm going to get my now Why can't and so the one thing they fear more than anything more than death itself. They don't fear death. Do you know what they fear? They fear incarceration because they see that it will take them out of the opportunity to get what they can. Before their life is going to come to a tragic end. While that's sad and horrific what we know as law enforcement professionals is that hey, if we interrupt that incarcerates you and get you out of the game and buy you time we can get you over that violence curve. And you can have many more years of life ahead of you. It doesn't mean we lock everyone up. What it means is that if you are playing in the game of violence, we're going to interrupt that intervene saved your life and the lives of many more other people. What is wrong with that? And what is wrong is when we see politicians that are intentionally breaking the system lives are being lost because of that, and political agendas are right rising above. Um, the the lives of the people in our community again. Victims deserve better. Well, it's a great point. It's an important point. Rick Snyder, f o P. President, We always love it. When you come on the show. You offer a very, very, very important perspective. And we appreciate your time here this afternoon. Thank you, Douglas. Absolutely. Well, we'll tell you, we've we've blown our schedule here a little bit, but that's a very important conversation We were having with Rick Snyder and we didn't want to interrupt it. "Protests against racial injustice are motivating some political candidates to take on challenging races. In the suburbs of Phoenix, Arizona Democrats are targeting a predominantly white district that has been held by Republicans for nearly a decade. Steve Goldstein from member station Cage's reports. That ethics violations committed by the incumbent could make the race more competitive. Arizona six Congressional district is centered in Scottsdale. Its residents are highly educated, affluent and early 75% white Congressman David Schweikert was reelected by double digits here in 2018. But Schweickart had been under investigation by the House Ethics Committee, and on Thursday he admitted to 11 violations and agreed to pay $50,000 fine Schweickart perspective. Opponents immediately pounced on the news. Here's Democrat Anita Malik. There's a part of me that's glad that we finally have closure to this investigation, but it is so infuriating to see him simply get off with a slap on the wrist. Even before acknowledging the ethics violations, Schweiker was already expected to face an intense general election campaign, in part because of an electorate that wants more action on combating racial injustice. One of the Democrats. Looking to challenge him is African American businessman Carl Gentles. While he believes many here are worried about education and jobs, he says, the killing of George Floyd has led to more direct conversations about racial injustice in the district has seen before. While George, Florida's African American I am an African American, and certainly I can see myself my son, my father, my brother in the face of George Floyd beneath that. Officers NI. I think people can see their own family members, no matter what race they are in the face of tourist Floyd Tianna Chander is one of those people Gentles is describing. She moved into the district eight years ago. Rallies and protests illustrated for her the dramatic need to find solutions. Chandler is middle aged and white. It's not okay to just be silent anymore, and we've got to figure out what the heck got us to this point and how we can try and sort of turned the tide and get rid of some of that racism. Hate Willingness to look the other way when things that we know what an OK continue to happen. Schweickart has been silent on race related topics. But the changing political environment since the killing of George Floyd may force him to talk about them. Erica County, which accounts for 60% of arrows on his population, has seen a clear shift toward more progressive voting in 2018 that included pushing Kirsten cinema to US Senate victory, becoming the first Democrat to win in arrows in a Senate race in nearly 25 years. But it's not just that Phoenix is growing rapidly, more diverse as Quentin James He's the founder and president of collective Pack, which is focused on electing African Americans across the country. There are a ton of suburban white women who are seeing these videos and wondering If those votes for Donald Trump in 2016. If don't do that, again, Republican consultant stand Barnes understands why Democrats are generally optimistic about 2020 here but says it's misplaced in the Phoenix suburbs. I do not think the racially charged politics that we're living in that the moment plays favorably for the Democratic nominee. In that congressional district, in part that it's so overdone, and I think voters are numb to that kind of play. But Quentin James believes that voters now more than any other time in recent history, are looking to choose the best candidate. Whatever color they are part of what folks One also know is Do you hear me? And are you going to fight for me? And it doesn't take white voters to get white candidates just to do that, or Blackwater's only looking for black answer. I think that's the core question, James says. As candidates of color are becoming more common, voters are increasingly more comfortable with choosing them to bring about changes many in the public are calling for for NPR news. I'm Steve Goldstein in Phoenix.

S. I'm selling down its June WTI contracts without exacerbated the volatility is sold all his holdings in the June WTI contract what you saw was a widening in the spread between the June and July a double chocolate tracks as some people trading around that and you do start to question how much more volatility we might see until the contract expires on may of the nineteenth Brent down five and a half percent to eighteen eighty nine dollars a barrel and of course the backup tool this is still concerns about Dimond and of course concerns about storage U. S. produces has started making crude deliveries to the country's emergency stockpile as that storage space is running out of in terms of how that played out in other markets interesting you actually saw the S. and P. five hundred at its highest since March tenth yesterday so didn't seem to reverberate too much across equity markets U.
