Supreme Court Unanimously Rules Against NCAA in Athlete Compensation Case

"Started the program today. Talking about the Landmark ruling by the supreme court in the ncwa Sports case it was actually brought by some student athletes who played college football current and former student athletes. The majority was written by gorsuch and the concurring and probably more inflammatory opinion from justice. Cavenaugh our supreme court expert professor josh blackman in south texas college of law is our guest professor. First of all did this ruling surprise. You know it didn't The argument by the ncaa is pretty extreme for more than one hundred years. They've been employing student athletes. they're paying them and they insist that no they're not actually employees. They are just athletes. Who happen to play a weapon. Go to class occasionally and it's always been a little tough to understand. They make billions of dollars off their licensing and tv deals and merchandising and the students get up guest So this was not a terribly surprising. Ruling could the nc double a. Have made a better argument. It sounded like you thought maybe their argument was not so strategic. I mean weren't they really trying to say. Hey when we win this when we want to shut everything down. Wasn't this an all or nothing. And isn't that what they're used to getting away with one hundred years is. Hey we're the nc double a. We we run college sports and you love them you know. I think that they were trying to win. Everything Their entire model works on treating student athletes as the special types of people. Who don't get any sort of compensation one to chip away at that exterior. And you recognize that these people are generating revenue and they should be compensated. Accordingly entire amateur model falls

"Seems like mark. Emery is always in the news. We talked to pete thamel about him. A couple of days ago and since then pitas written Even more talking about whether the winds of change are not already in the thanks for the time. Let's let's talk about your latest on. When i was i was dumbfounded when i read your column because i swear. I rent a comment the other day. Some poo bear in the ncwa hierarchy. That said he was doing a good job and they were happy with him. Well hey it was interesting. Paul like he. There's a little bit like i know. I caught in the stock market. When when when the stocks keep going up they call it the goldilocks effect in in college. Athletics when someone who is perhaps not performing their job at a high level but still gets to keep their job is a similar thing. We're just all the all the factors surrounding them are in place so they can keep on going even if the results aren't there and we we saw you know most recently with larry scott out in the pac twelve where it was fairly unanimous Feeling amongst athletic director certainly in a lot of people out there that maybe it was time for larry to move on and he had a couple of key presidents especially the gentleman at arizona state and they make a crow who were were on his. We're on his side and he kept the job probably three or four years longer than maybe even more than that than than most people in that area would Would have thought he was going to in so the Mark emirate is that he is pretty much lost his constituency on the ground meaning he has lost the commissioners for shore at multiple commissioners going to estimate that least eighty five percent of them would like to see a change in the president's spot athletic directors. A little harder to judge. 'cause you're you're going from university of maine to miami and alabama you know eastern washington. There's three hundred and something in division one and there's d tuned. three as well But it's probably a fair estimate to say eighty five percent there want change as well. I mean let's put it this way for all the stuff that's come out about mark emmer. His anybody stepped up to defend him. I don. I don't think there's i have not heard or seen a you know a single person other than his bosses.

O’Neil: NCAA president Mark Emmert doesn’t get it

"The latest coming from the athletic from dana o'neil the outstanding writer and columnist air under the heading. Ncwa president mark. Ambert doesn't get it because clearly he's just not capable of doing so was the piece in the athletic is an viscera eating. Take down of the man who is supposedly in charge of college athletics. Dana joins us now. Dana o'neil dan. Thank you for the time. It's great to have you here. And what an amazing piece you've written and you just wonder. Sometimes when people will learn but often their arrogance and hubris gets in the way thanks for the time. And let's hear from you. What is going on with mark emmer pulse like you said i mean this if this were a first timer a one off. I think we'd all be like all right. Give the guy a break. He hasn't been in this situation before but he's been in countless situations of of complex and difficult crises in his in his tenure at the ncaa and his reaction time. If you will say as an athlete it's not very good He just you know i to me. There was a simple way to handle this. And that's to actors. It's one thing to have a crisis dropped in your lap. It's another about how you handle it. And he chose not to handle it. Yeah and and and the story broke the other day when when a young player from believe it was oregon. Put something out on social media. Everyone everyone reacted. And i want you to do this. In your piece go through the time line because emmer te got it at first and then it just got away from him. So what was his first reaction well on. And that's just i. I guess the first reaction was he no reaction i mean. He didn't do. They put out a statement at first saying that That space was never meant to be used as a weight room space where they're going to have one after the once. The sweet sixteen round started which made no sense men already have one And then he doubled back when we sat down with him a few reporters on friday saying well. He didn't have all the information that it was excusable. But he would get to the bottom of it and then the next day he talked to an economic group here in indiana and basically just said well. You know it wasn't meant to be the workout space anyway. But once the video got out a video out

NCAA Withheld Use of Powerful 'March Madness' Brand From Women's Basketball

"And finally. It's march and college. Basketball tournaments are in full swing the infamous march madness logo is everywhere but that trademark one of the most powerful brands in sports is only used for the men's tournament in a recent report. The wall street journal found that the national collegiate athletic association had withheld use of the march madness brand from the women's basketball tournament when asked about it the nc double a. I said the women basketball leadership had chosen not to use it but then the ncwa reversed course to say. That was an accurate. This comes on the heels of recent posts that went viral on social media. Depicting different facilities and perks for the women's teams competing in the tournament. Our sports reporter. Louise radnofsky says the. Nc double a. is playing defense where now is also at a much bigger underlying causes of the despair. If the men's tournament has had for years access to one of the most powerful sports brands in the world and the women's tournament not only did not as the ncaa initially suggested decide. It didn't want to be part about brand but it had been excluded from that brand and that people now say they of course want to be part of something that powerful that they believe they deserve to be part of something that powerful and that the ncaa what is reviewing how it proceeds going forward with women's basketball may need to take a much deeper look and a much wider look then simply focusing on weight rooms which are perhaps the most tangible way people experienced it but not necessarily the biggest way they were in fact experiencing it earlier. This week the nc. Aa said it would work with stakeholders to quote determined the best way forward for women's basketball including the use of march madness logos in the future.

Whats In a Name, Image, and Likeness? Social Media and College Athletes

"David is sunday there. Games going on all around us. How is your bracket doing you know. I thought i was doing so badly. I didn't even check yesterday until this morning. And i looked. And i was in third place in my in my pool and i don't know how that happened. I can only assume that. Winning a war of attrition here is my is my assumption. David hale covers college sports from charlotte north carolina and his latest report on the future of athletes name image and likeness. Rules is on. Espn dot com yet. David you're the right person to talk to. You are ranked third in your group. I am currently looking at. Espn dot com right now. Ranked ten million two hundred twelve thousand six hundred and forty second to the country. Which is you know not great. Look you're a mere two hundred change thousand away from being in the top ten million and i think that's something to be quite proud of. I will settle for a goal like that after the weekend that i've had picking this bracket but david one of the stories. That's been so inextricable from the brackets has been your reporting college athletes and this whole universe of rules and regulations that are known as name image and likeness so alongside all these great games. That were watching. We've also been seeing this social media phenomenon. Basically was hashtag called not ncwa property. Can you tell us the meaning behind that. Yeah this is in some ways. The next generation of some of the conversations that we saw on social media over the summer last year about a social justice about we want to play. Athletes are really learning that they have leverage via social media. And what they're leveraging right now is the immense amount of attention that is on the ncaa tournament in women's to sell the message they want name image and likeness rights but what this essentially would allow is for players to profit off of their name image and likeness which means they could do an endorsement. They could do a tv commercial. They could be an influence or on social media and get paid for it. They could go to their hometown and host a basketball camp for youth in that area and make money from it. All of this should seem very reasonable because if you are a education major and you want to have a side business tutoring in college. You can do that if you are on a music scholarship and you want to piano concert and get paid for it. You can do that. But if you're a walk on not even on scholarship playing athletics at the aa level and you want to do anything to make money with your name. Image likeness using your skillset. You're out of luck. Currently

The Unrelenting Force of Dawn Staley

"So josh. He recently had a long conversation with basketball. Legend dawn. staley. I for those who might be less familiar with her career and background. Can you give us a quick snapshot of just what this woman has accomplished. Well i don't know if i can do it quickly. It's a long list. She was a two time. Ncwa player of the year. At virginia she went on to be named one of the wnba. Top fifteen players of all time daily off screen getting that bit rates jabber every time. She comes down with a line drive. She has a board time olympia and as the player time overall including her coaching career. Staley underneath will sell it. Twenty three game winning streak for the united states. She went directly into head. Coaching style was never an assistant coach. Her first job was the head coach at temple and she came to south carolina following a fairly long career temple and has taken south carolina from okay program to a national championship in two thousand seventeen. South carolina spectacular. Performance chappie you dug pretty deep into you. Don staley's background her early background. Can you tell us about her early days and her family growing up well. She grew up one a big family lot five kids. The matriarch of the family was estelle salia housekeeper. They grew up in a housing project in north philadelphia. Not easy but still staley was a disciplinarian in her daughter's words and everybody knows my mother. She's a headstrong woman. She's deceased now but she was known for her straight took. No nonsense backed down from nobody. You did not take her parking spot at the mall without a fight etc and down has carried that onto a much larger stage so just a very tight family and still somebody who's very much shaped by her mother and be the course of north philadelphia where she played against boys for most of her childhood and became not just very good but very tough. The neighborhood i grew up in you had to make sure that you had a reputation as being strong then back now from anybody was able to handle anything that was throwing your way and that has prepared me for any curve balls. Life can throw me north philly. Tough was the word her brother used. And they don't throw that around lightly a connection between the way she was raised where she grew up and the kind of basketball coach that she's become a where she was raised in where she grew up has affected every part of her. She is not a person who on some days. It's easy to play for our imagine especially early in her tenure at south carolina there were players who left the program high profile players. Who left the program. I would think don stay. They would tell you. She may not be for everybody because she is not going to suffer any foolishness. She will defend those players outside the program to the end of the earth. But that doesn't mean that she's going to give them an inch when they're in her. Jim staley has also become one of the more outspoken coaches and all of college basketball and josh recently wrote that quote staley. Mary's attributes that many have decided are incompatible. What did you mean by that. Well she's just fascinating to me because she is a black woman in the state of south carolina who has been pretty clear that she's not donald trump supporter. This is a state that voted for donald trump. So she's really walking a fine line there when she's got a lot of fans in a red state and she's pretty blue person but she's also shares a very strong christian faith with most south carolinians. She has been outspoken about police. Brutality inequality in the policing system at the same time. She's a special deputy at the rich county sheriff's office. She regularly rides armed with rich. County sheriff's deputies on their patrols. I do think that's relatable the coaches like some of the things that they do the de-escalate or tactics they use is relatable to deal with every day. Leon lot longtime sheriff of richland county said to me. If she wasn't a basketball coach she'd be a cop. She's just got that demeanor. Help people i mean. And that's what law enforcement should be about is about helping people and she wants to know people. She has a gift to gab. She can talk. Do you have to have good communications. Feel today law enforcement officer. She has that so you can't put her in a box and that's fascinating to me. How do you think she navigates. Straddling all of those worlds. She said to me that she is not stressed. I can't be anybody but me but at the same time you know. Most people here at south carolina in south carolina. Accept me for who. I am and i'm good with that and i'm good the ones that don't but i don't think there's a grand plan. I don't think she has an outline. I think she takes every interaction every moment and she deals with it very reflexively face what you could teach me something you can over me up to see things a little bit differently then. She's not a person who will not listen to somebody who has a different opinion. She says she craves hearing those different opinions. As long as the conversations can be respectful and stay within certain bounds. She wants that to happen. I can foresee a day where dawn staley is sitting in the middle of colonial life. Arena in the court at a podium and just taking questions from tons of people in the audience. Who don't agree with her on anything politically or socially. I think she would love that. I think she wants that stuff. But i don't think this is part of a bigger plan. I think she just deal with it from her. Core and then goes to the next day. Does the same

"And we walk you back. The second half of the program is live and we always enjoy chatting with coach dawn staley as her team about to make their entrance into the the women's tournament in greenville coached. First of all great to have you on and it's always it's always a of our great pleasure to say hello to you. How are you. Hey how you doing i. I had to chuckle reading an article about you the other day about you speaking out and i'm thinking i can't believe dawn. Staley was speaking out about something. Can't well you you you. You gotta keep people on at times. Not all the time. At time i'll come back to the second. But i mean this is. This is the biggest time of the year for women's basketball the conference tournament. Then we move on to the ncwa. So i know you were probably a little disappointed about sunday. But how do you feel about your team. And and what's ahead. I mean. I feel real good. This team has been Dish really trying to find his identity. I know we. We won a lot of basketball games. And we probably lost a lot of basketball games from what we've done in the past But there they still have a thirst for learning and you know they they. They compete hard every day in practice. You know i it they they don't play from a place of you know what with me. They played from a place of what's next. How we how do we get better. What do we need to do. let's do it so we haven't played our best basketball to this day but i do feel like it's coming and i'm hoping you know we we show up show out on friday and it leaves the us continuing the wind throughout the weekend. You'll play tomorrow night at six against missouri alabama game winner. Certainly you're used to playing late into the conference tournament. How do you view this week. As opposed to next week in terms of getting ready for the tournament you've had such success. She won the national championship. You've had Great runs in the tournament. H- what am i know. You wanna win. That's obvious but how do you try to use the sec tournament to to help your team get ready. I'm a great simulator for Win or go home and if you go home earlier than Sunday afternoon And you have to your home and you're watching the two semi finals or the finals It it's a lonely place to be and it's not a very cool feeling and when we had to do it it was. It was an awful feeling. And you know i none of our players right now. You have have experienced that but from last year none of our younger players have experienced that in and we hope that they can keep that that innocence about being in a tournament setting and winning

What John Thompson Meant To DC

"What was it like for you to cover John Thompson and the Hoyas as a young reporter? What were your interactions with him like? It was. You know it was an education was twenty, three, twenty, four years old and that was my first beat but John was a handful. As you can imagine, and he controlled everything we control the player access you controlled access to himself and draw the program, and so John was someone that you You had to kind of meet on his terms. Can you describe he was six foot ten? He was just this literally and figuratively massive figure. Can you describe what it? was like to be in his presence well, I mean look any six, ten, three, hundred, pound guy is going to have a certain amount of power to him. You know he wasn't nimble I won't say he was Nimble but he certainly had the meeting of former athlete and you know he had a big loud booming voice nothing had happened by accident I had no intentions of being a basketball court. I. Wanted To be a teacher basically social worker kind of person freelance. Knew. How to use his size and his voice to great effect and I, was not the recipient of John's paint peeling yelling as as the players often were but they will tell you that there was just there was just nothing like it when he really was angry and was coming after you about a mistake, you made a decision you made. He certainly tilted the room when he came in when their buzzer went off and they said it's over. We didn't stay up and down the hallway and talk with people kissing is just so we can get a good article written about us he coach during the glory days of the Big East what do you remember most about his team's and just the style and the way that they played? Well, the frenetic full court pressure was their thing. To set up an impressed. Retract. Very physical teams anybody that came into the pink dot hit, and that's just the way that they had always played. Here. And that leads to a lot of confrontations. A couple of pretty bad fights. But a lot of grabbing and holding things like that. And that's just the way that they had always played in obviously worked for them. David you're born and raised DC. Can you talk about what John? Thomson and the Georgetown Program? Men's to people in DC and in particular to black basketball fans in the city DC was like a lot of cities in the eighties dealing with a lot of different stuff that was that was very difficult. The year is only sixty days old during that time. There have now been ninety-two homicides here in the District of Columbia last year sixty to eighty percent of the murders in the nation's capital, we're listed as drug related. You had the explosion of crack cocaine in DC in in the mid eighties just devastated whole swath of the community and you had Marion Berry who was this incredibly polarizing figure, and this is before his drug problems came to bear. He was polarizing well before then because he insisted that these rich white guys that tended to run the city hire black people all the people who only know Marion Barry through the nasty headlines in the videotape of crack cocaine. Don't know extraordinary work. He did in this in Washington to open up the doors of government to the black people of Washington you're shutout for years decades, and then you have this presidential era of Reagan, where there was a lot of hostility towards cities, there was a lot of cutting a city services. There was a lot of emnity towards people that were on welfare and they've perception that raking perpetuated was that all these people are welfare cheats and they're not in their bums and you're not working for a living perhaps the most insidious effect of welfare is it's usurpation of the role of provider. Public assistance for a single mother can amount to much more than the usual income of a minimum wage job. In other words, it can pay for her to quit work. These competing forces, all kind of colliding with one another in the city in the early eighties in the mid eighties and into that Maelstrom, you have this basketball team. That is good enough to win a national championship in one, thousand, nine, hundred, four. Jobs. The I ask championship. And then notice that the team is mostly black eleven of the twelve guys or thirteen or fourteen guys that get your attention in one, thousand, nine, hundred, eighty, three, or eighty four you know rap videos late eighties is a Lotta Georgetown starter jackets in those videos. was torn concept had long hair and short baby came in national programs to the point where a lot of black people thought. Georgetown was an HP. Come to the. Question to see hundred. So there was this kind of interesting blend. Wall Street types and judges, and fortune five hundred CEO's with the people that cleaned the offices and drove the buses rooting for the same team and it was gonNA. Kinda, cold because it kind of it helped bring the city together in ways that really only the football team had done previously and it brought a lot of pride to the city as as a six. They were proving that black kids from inner city high schools could go to Georgetown and do work. They could do the work and that was a source of immense pride to people in DC Thomson was, of course, the first black basketball coach to win a national championship. But David you've written about how Thompson would bristle when asked about that accomplishment. Why did he? Take exception to that question will John would always say is that the question implied that he was the first black coach who who had the qualifications to win a national championship I'm not interested in being the first and only black do anything because it implies that in Nineteen eighty-four, a black man finally became intelligent enough to win NCAA, title and that's very misleading. And that was John's way of saying you know you need to understand the history of coaching. There was a lot more deferential treatment provided to white coaches for for decades and coaches like Adolph rupp that didn't recruit black players. was hostile toward black players. So that was John's way of saying you know do your homework. In nineteen, eighty nine. He famously walked off the court before a game to protest an NCWA rules that he felt disproportionately affected black students. undercurrent NCWA rules students can qualify for athletic scholarships by scoring seven hundred out of a possible sixteen hundred on the College Board Sat test fifteen out of thirty six on the act or with a two point average and certain. Subjects proposition forty two would require athletes to have both. What did he? What did he say about that? John's position was that both the sat scores and your grade point average could be impacted adversely due to the educational disparities present throughout public schools at the time black has weren't being taught the things that were on the sat. He made his point that you know these tests should not be the end all and be all in terms of determining whether or not a kid was smart enough to go into college. Moment existence and I. started into school that I would not been dotted with an opportunity to get a college education myself. He was recruiting kids that play but also kids that can do the work. So it was not as much an issue for him in terms of recruiting it was more the bigger picture of. Are we going to allow these tests to determine whether black kids can get into colleges and then they finally wound up modifying prop forty two as a result of it.

Former Kansas State president Jon Wefald on college football amid pandemic

"Dr John We follow the former president at at Kansas state. Thanks for spending a few more minutes with a doctor. I wanted to ask you you mentioned. Where the college presidents are, but but some have pushed back and said while it wall. It is a dangerous decision to green light at cancelling. It might be even worse when you consider the financial risk You've sat in those chairs. You sat these NCWA committee meetings. You've been part of negotiations. What's at risk for college athletic departments and colleges themselves? Paul I'm already there because there's not going GonNa be a college football season this year, so I mean. Look at the the big ten's already canceled. But forty two games the the PAC twelve is canceled like thirty six. So and in the presence are are are in charge of the entire university. So you know when I hear Ross talking. I understand completely. He's got every scenario looked at. But, even if everything's perfect there and you get a multitude of students getting the covid nineteen, the president's are going to call the season off, but here's the deal I'm already. Looking at the consequences, and and they are bleak. the University of Minnesota did A. Long Study and was in the Minneapolis Tribune. Let's say they're athlete budgets one hundred, twenty three. And if there's no football season for Minnesota and the big ten. Their athletic budget, just kind of in half and say for. Let's say the sixty five power five schools. Paul. There's no football this year. Their athletes budgets are close to cut in half, and in some cases more in some cases less. But will you saw Stanford I mean Look Stanford is one of the richest universities one of the best universities in the world, and they've already cancelled eleven, so called Olympic Spring Sports and. You're going to see other schools in the power five conferences eliminating. Those sports left and right here in the near future, because they won't be able to afford like at the University of Minnesota if they go from one hundred, twenty, three, million and that budget's cut in half. They're GONNA have to start eliminating sport, so it's going to be devastating. Who wants to eliminate sports? But here you've got this great school. Stanford that's already eliminated eleven, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. And so for Kansas, state. Let's say our budget is like eighty five million well, it would go down to thirty eight to forty million, so we would have to cut sports to. So the consequences of the limited, he's coaches and telling teams We just can't afford anymore and their moms and dads are furious. No it's GonNa be very painful. And Athletic Departments Are Really important all of our schools and. And you know if you lose half your budget because of this pandemic call covid nineteen. Oh i. tell you what it is. It is GONNA be so devastating Paul I hate to think about it because you know once that college football season half the budget for most of these half-baked departments. It's gone into the night. Actually, we feel. Let me go back. Something I I know you've answered it and I don't mean to be repetitive, but. Okay, but we talked to people and you've. You've addressed one or two of the interviews and. I'm struggling because there's such a disconnect I'm talking to people every day. I had commissioner on from another conference earlier and they're optimistic. Glass half full and all this, and then you're. You're not even. You're not even taking a breath and just saying there's not going to be college football. The same thing you seven months ago and I'm I'm trying to figure out you know. If what you say is true. Why are they saying with? They're saying. Well. I suppose you could call wishful thinking. I'm a quintessential. I'd be doing the same thing Paul was. president or Director today. So I I, would all the I mean I'd be doing exactly what you're saying. They're saying. If you're not sure you don't think they really believe it. Well I. Don't think they've really looked at it. Seriously I don't think I think. Really. Underestimating is enemy called Cova nineteen. It's everywhere in in some cases in America is on the uptick, and it's had an increase that you know a lot of places are. Kind of dangerous to go. But you know I see. Here's the deal this covert nineteen. Let's say here. We have sixty five universities. In, hundreds of athletes and coaches that wanted to do a perfect job and start the season on September fifth and go through twelve games, and so forth in the problem is. They're not in control. This is an enemy. That's everywhere. Kind of little communist, running all over the place from China. And so they could just wake up one day and find out that three hundred fifty students at Kansas state have developed covid nineteen.

Inside the Downfall of the XFL

"XFL was supposed to be the league that can finally make spring football work with financial backing from WWe's Vince McMahon in veteran leadership from commissioner Oliver Luck. The idea seemed promising. But just five weeks in Copen, nineteen forced the xfl hit pause, and then unlike other leaks. It announced it was shutting down for good. Today the inside story of why the xfl closed doors, and whether it could have been saved. I'M UNICOM'S IT's Tuesday June sixteenth. This is espn daily presented by marathon. Shaken. What's Shakin what she can not much some to you're talking to you Kevin Siefert writes about the NFL and the xfl for ESPN. So Kevin the last time you and I talked was to preview the xfl so excited about this new league time the rules and how funding would be, and whether it would work, and while sadly, we are gathered here today to autopsy the xfl the. League officially suspended their operations on April tenth season quote the uncertainty of the current environment, obviously referencing the corona virus pandemic. What was it like inside the League on that day? It was pretty wild. Actually talked to Kurt unsecure. WHO's the president of the Saint? Louis? Battle. Hawks and he heard some rumors he had wondered if the League would. Need to cut back in some way like many businesses, but he at most thought there might be some layoffs or potentially some furloughs, but when he woke up that morning. Like many other xfl employees he saw the. Direct deposit from. His pay. Was much larger than normal. Anyone who's ever worked in an office setting or a for a company of any kind knows that on your last day you get a paycheck for your salary, and also for any occasion time accumulated, and that's what that's. What happened here and that was really the first sign that he occurred hunziker or anybody. Really who worked for the xfl knew that not only were some changes about to happen, but. Some really ominous events were about the Kerr that day. And they found out. There was a going to be an all company conference. Call at about noon. And that's where they were informed that everyone who works for the League was terminated. Kevin Win all that down. The XFL was on hold like pretty much everything else right I mean the pandemic hit a sports world back in March when the NBA system. It's season. WWe Closes headquarters in Stamford Connecticut days later then on March. Twentieth six fell big flat out of their season, and said we look forward to playing full seasons for you, and with you in twenty twenty one, so it seemed like at the time the plan wasn't afford the league entirely, but just hit pause. Pick up when the pandemic was over. Why do you think they thought they could keep going back then? I think they they felt pretty good that in the five weeks at the season had managed to get through they had. Gone a long way. Towards proving the concept they had pulled in about twenty million league revenues, and they're projecting forty six million through the rest of the year. They're TV. Ratings had dipped, but they were about to go on a run of having most of their games, either on ABC or Fox and so, that would probably at least stabilized the ratings, and they thought that they would have for the first time since they had started building the league time to really sit down, pull apart their thoughts and come up with a better product, the following year Vince McMahon who the owner of the League he had pulled almost four hundred million dollars out of WWe stocks into his personal account to finance. Really for two or three years, and so they knew the money was there, he had put up about two hundred million, and was committed to paying another hundred and fifty million a year for a few years. Until they could potentially get the profitability, so there was. A lot of confidence that the money existed to continue subsidizing the League in that long term plan would not be sacrificed just because the season had to end more abruptly than they had hoped. I didn't know that so the xfl Vince McMahon rather was using wwe money to fund the XFL. Right away you know Vincent Man's the owner of w w well early state, the founder and the CEO, and so he had lots of stock, and so he used that stock eventually to fund the XFL. There was a division, a financial and business division, but you know there was also a shared services agreement between the two. Certainly the way they were able to recruit coaches and front office people and even the Commissioner Oliver luck the way they were able to convince people to come aboard was the show them the plan the financial plan that he had to spend money over the over those three years, there was public documents. That showed that the stock had been sold in that the money was now. In Vincent. Man's hands to fund the XFL and that's why they they felt so good about it. So the xfl like every other sport announces. Hey, we're going on pause. Then a couple of weeks pass. What was the state of play at the beginning of April? Really at the beginning of April the XFL was in off season mode. Oliver Lock. WHO's the commissioner had been asked to come up with twenty, twenty, one I jets. He had asked all the department has all the team presidents to come up with plans to market the teams throughout the long off season. That was to come. Everything was in the XFL. Offices were being directed towards this twenty twenty one season and a lot of times towards the twenty twenty two seasons well, they were looking ahead, saying okay, here's what we want to do in twenty twenty one. We WanNa make it better, and this is what we want and twenty twenty two, and then then we look to see if we can be profitable and this was all going on really. Really, in between the time, the xfl canceled season, and when it shuttered and had bankruptcy, and so those plans were all compiled, and I'll reluctant demand to Vince McMahon, and then they didn't hear anything. They didn't hear anything back, and they thought maybe it was because Wrestlemainia was going on. People had their attention there, but that was something that caused a little bit of unease as the second week of April arrived and that. They've been asked to create these budgets. And then there have been radio silence. So Oliver Overlook. Who was commissioner of the XFL also Andrew looks father for those who don't know and has been a sports executive for years used to NFL Europe who's an executive with the NCWA? He's going about his business. Assuming the league's going to come back putting together some plans, and then what happens. And then he gets a call or actually gets a letter on April ninth stating that he had been fired for cause and the letter came from. Vincent man and from the his attorney listing supposed. Infractions to his contract into his duties that Oliver Luck had apparently committed in his response, Oliver Luck in his legal papers, said he had never been told of any of these issues, but on April Ninth I, think about five o'clock is when Oliver Luck found out, he'd been fired. So what elect do? You know he is already in his home. In Indianapolis, the xfl offices were closed, and so he immediately got with his lawyer. Because when you get fired, because usually that can mean that the guarantee in your contract is no longer valid, and so he has sued for wrongful termination, not only disputing the reasons that Vince McMahon fired him which among other reasons, whereas the use of company cell phone for personal reasons which. Many people in the xfl on in the public to be an awfully little bit of a petty, and that's not even editorializing. It's just a fact. You know petty reason to fire sports commissioner WHO's making. Between five and seven million dollars a year, and so he not only is disputing the facts of what was in the latter, his termination letter, but also that the xfl never gave him the thirty days. That's required in his contract to correct any issues that ownership is having, and so that is currently playing out in court. We'll see who wins on that or whether there is some kind of negotiation that occurs, but at the moment Oliver Luck seeking twenty three point eight million dollars from Vince McMahon, who can fill the contract that he signed in two thousand, eighteen to be the commissioner of the xfl.

NCAA Won't Mandate Uniform Return to Sports, Mark Emmert Says

"Really looking forward to chatting with heather vintage from ESPN. Who broke the story last night? In relation to our interview with Mark Emirates the president most people saw the headlines throughout the evening and early day the NCW. A uniform return And now we can get an inside that conversation and find out what it all means Heather thank you for being with us. It's great to connect with you again. Hope you're well. I'll tell you man I don't know that heather and I usually convene in at ESPN on Sunday morning. About six fifteen in the morning. We're we're both the bleary eyed for various reasons but we get through it and Heather I feel the same way. Let's let's let's talk about your conversation with President Amran. Everyone thinks they know what it means. But you talk to Him. Tell us about it. Well I think one of the big questions I have had about all of this is what is the double role and some coaches have been outspoken. And saying we need somebody to issue a sort of blanket set of instructions to help us out on this and so I asked him point blank with the NCAA issue a start date and he said not in this case usually we would. That's what we do but The Corona virus pandemic has thrown this off the track and so he is saying from the highest level and college sports. What I have heard from every single commissioner that I have talked to which is it is not up to us and they stressed this in a phone call to Vice President Mike Pence a couple of weeks ago and I think it's very important to reiterate. Just how different college? Sports are from Pro Sports. They can't just you know. Pull up in a parking lot and get a test in minutes and go into a stadium. That's unlock they. Must WAIT UNTIL UNIVERSITY. Presidents reopened campuses So as much as a lot of people have heard like the NCWA to do something to help not even commissioners the most powerful people in sports the power five commissioners can do this uniformly as much as they would like to. They are cognizant of the fact. This is changing state by state. So what role does Emmerick ploy moving forward? So part of it he said is helping regulate the what is it ninety conference championships that they do oversee And Remember the NC Double A. Was the one that had the authority and the power to cancel the NCAA basketball tournaments which they run and all the other winter sports and the spring sports calling a halt to those conference championship games but his thing was basically saying we are here to help them in terms of fast tracking legislation. Let's say they only go to eight conference games Or How do you do? We need to reconfigure how you determine a conference champion and a certain league or play number of games Bob Ob the big twelve. Commissioner told me to football oversight committee will have something to do with a lot of those questions and and rules and regulations but at the NC double a level he said he and his staff are preparing just like the commissioners are for whatever permutation you might be able to think about what seasons might look like in order to respond quickly and say okay. You only have eight of ten teams and you're GonNa play championship. Here's here's we're going to rewrite this here you go. He said something Friday that was that I thought was interesting where where he alluded to it. In loot he was pretty matter of fact about the students on campus. Before you can play and that's been the debate You you talk to more people than anyone help us understand where we're the commissioners are right now and why did Mark emerets say that well choosers. Depends on who you talk. Too Much Commissioner Craig. Thompson was very blunt about it when I spoke to him and basically said I don't see how you can have athletes back. You don't have students back Jon Steinbrecher of the Mack told me the exact same thing Bob. Dole's be told me last week he said well. Here's the thing if everyone is going to online classes the first step is you have to have your athletes register online because again. They are student athletes if they're not registered for those online classes. That's the first step. You can't get back on campus. You're you can't be a student athlete. So there are also conversations going on about what it could look like on some campuses that have some students returned to campus. We're just freshman or however you might want to Put that piece of the puzzle together but there are certainly varying pain herm Edwards at. Asu told me if it's not safer. Sousa comeback from my players and coaches. I WANNA have everybody tested

"Has been postponed that was march eleventh when an announcer called off the Oklahoma City Thunder and Utah Jazz game. Just before tip off. Most of US remember that day it was the day. President trump announced the travel restrictions from Europe. The day Tom Hanks and read a Wilson said they had tested positive for Kovic nineteen and the day the NBA suspended the rest of the season after Rudy. Gobert the Utah Jazz Center head tested positive for the virus. You may remember go bare as the player who touched all the microphones at a Utah Jazz media event as a prank. He didn't know he was positive at the time and later apologized for it. I'm a huge basketball fan myself so I was crushed when I heard the news of the NBA suspension. But of course public health comes first to me that really was the watershed moment in the entire. Corona Virus Cova nineteen conversation and not just sports but in our culture. Christine Brennan has been covering sports for three decades. She says she hasn't seen anything like this in her entire career. I think it woke the nation and the world frankly up to the significance and the seriousness of the corona virus pandemic after the NBA suspended season. It was like a domino effect. Major league soccer in the NHL have suspended their seasons for now while Major League. Baseball is hoping to open season in May according to ESPN and the NCWA cancelled it spring and winter championships as a wolverine go blue. I love March madness. It's one of my favorite times of the year. I even had tickets to the final four this year so I was really disappointed when that didn't happen but the threat to our health and safety was too great and it wasn't just the safety of the fans it was for the safety of the athletes to eleven thousand. Olympians expected to compete in Tokyo. This summer had their plans. Put on. Hold the Twenty Twenty Summer Games now postponed until twenty twenty one. The Games have been canceled three times before. But this is the first time they've been postponed and of course even a date. That far ahead doesn't come without concerns. Christine Brennan told me well we in the summer of two thousand twenty one. We'll people feel comfortable. Flying on planes overseas will the Japanese fans feel comfortable being in big stadiums and the answer is over and over experts. I've talked to. We have no idea. We just do not know but by that point of course a lot of these. Olympic athletes will have lost months and months of training. I just don't think we know yet and I think that uncertainty is so difficult for athletes. Consider that Olympic athlete. Their whole lives for this one moment. I was hardly know just as we train for for almost a year to two years. Just make the Olympic team. That's odd the beater Amman. An Olympic distance runner twenty twenty was the fifth time he's qualified at forty three. He's also the oldest American to run the marathon in the Olympics. You know before before the device you have a goal does the one thing you have like road races coming up you. Have you have something to get ready for this time? Everything's on the air. I just training just to stay fit and the sports world isn't just waiting on the sidelines. In the midst of the Pandemic Major League Baseball is now participating in a nationwide Corona Virus Antibody Study League employees spouses and players volunteered to participate to help give a better understanding of how prevalent this virus really is so I go is not to get an obese specifically back to work go in our research is really to get a bit of understanding of what the true prevalence looks like across the nation. I spoke with Daniel Lichner. The president and lab director of the Sports Medicine Research and Testing Laboratory. They were great pot down in a great organization because the head nationwide coverage that we could access individuals that were I seem to matic regular part of the general population. You know from team owners all the way down to hotdog vendors and be sales people on Game Day and everything in between you're looking at the MLB it sounds like sort of a microcosm then of the country Representing different demographics of our country. Can Can you talk me through how it was administered? Then in how quickly then did they get results? Some people could do drive-thru program where they have a bunch of their technicians. Physicians trainers and the Individuals with the drive through. Stick their finger out the window get fingerprint can get the result literally in a matter of minutes and it seems like most people would fundamentally want to know. Then am I now essentially immune can I get infected again? I think which too soon to say what that immunity looks like now. The federal government is slowly making plans to reopen the country. As I said earlier president trump has asked major league sports commissioners to be apart of that conversation the commissioners have a tough job. They're weighing a lot of things. In making the decision of how in win to get back to work commissioners work for the owners and their league and and the owners are going to want to start playing. They're going to want to start making money again. They're not liking the losses the financial losses that they're taking of course no one is the commissioners also have to weigh the very significant health risks. Not just for the players and their families and the referees and the coaches and the TV people and the and the media people But also the fans in the stands. And if you're drawing people into a stadium and if it becomes a corona virus hotspot and all of a sudden explodes. That is the fear of every commissioner in every sport you open up too soon you bring people together and all of a sudden you have another corona virus bomb sports says we know it may not be the same for a long time the NFL draft. Which starts tonight. We'll be held. Virtually for the first time as was the WNBA draft last week. The League plans to start its regular season in September and the draft helped set that into motion. Here's NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in an interview with ESPN. Obviously it's a different year for all of us. We had to make modifications in our offseason program We've had to make significant changes to our draft And those are all appropriate and their right to do. And we you know part of what this is about is continued to work from home by-product from home continue to do things we're supposed to do and be prepared. There's also the possibility that spectator less sports will become the new normal Christine Brennan predicts that will happen at the PGA men's golf tournament when it comes back in June and the masters in November. We could see an a masters without spectators. And that's GonNa look very strange to a lot of people. Although my prediction here is that within a couple of days of watching some of these sports events. If you watch a baseball game without spectators day is not gonNA look a strange the next day and by the third or the fourth day. You're going to be totally used and you're just going to be happy. You're watching baseball again. I think sports is walking a very fine line. It's kind of a tight rope. We want sports back. It'll make people happy it'll signal this openness that maybe we're we're coming out of this and yet you don't WanNa move too fast. Olympic runner of the Bearman thinks that the twenty twenty one Olympics will be a history making record breaking year. But I think he's GonNa going to unite us. I'm just GONNA have so much energy like a lot of things. Going every athlete winner represent contract because they know what their country went through so everybody wanted to do when do their best Magic Johnson also remains hopeful America. All of us who live in this great country that we live in. We need sports especially in a time like this but only if everybody is safe

James Wiseman Says He Will Leave Memphis and Enter the N.B.A. Draft

"James Wise leaving Memphis. He never came back after his suspension after that forgave came back court ordered to play or the initial possible eligibility suspension Meena comes. I WanNa ask you big picture. What is the moral of the stores I? Sometimes it feels like we're piling on the way but they make it so easy right because the moral of this story is they might have won that battle but what they really lost the war. I don't know what this is going to mean for. James Wiseman I think he could have benefited from marketing himself. A bit by being out there in March but now he gets to protect his body Eddie and perhaps make some money. I do know that this is a huge l. for the NCWA because in March we're not going to see him we're not going to say RJ Hampton. We're not gonNA see Lamelo Ball. This is undeniably undeniably at Trent Sarahspain. Yeah the moral of the story is not just that the NC Double A.'s. Rules make it so that players decide it's not worth sticking around paying eleven thousand five hundred dollars to play if you've already achieved the eligibility age that you need but that brings me to the major problem which is that that exists in the first place it's the NBA rule that required him. Go Play College basketball. When he wasn't interested in the first place like any other eighteen year old who is qualified? He should have been allowed to go do the job he can do for the money he can earn and that rules eventually GonNa go by the wayside because the top three of the top five people that are predicted to go top. Five in the draft won't be playing college basketball this year and as they continue to witness that the NBA is going to realize is that they need to provide other opportunities

"We'll continue to play sax tributed cubs tribute tomorrow. If you missed our Cole hamels interview, what a great interview he is. We'll replay it at five o'clock Dame Wieder or one hour from now he's out in Arizona, but covering football. They've got the owners meetings going Matt Nagy spoke today. There's talk of some rule changes talk of rule changes with every sport. Right. I think so I think so we've lost drills. We have absolutely lost deals including this off season. Sorry. I hit the that was an accident. Rick Hahn talking about actually losing deals because of social media in two thousand nine hundred reminding me to ask ravioli, yeah, I wanted to play did that like subconsciously maybe one of our good buddies that we look to for good opinions, and he's a double threat here because not only can we talk baseball with him and he's getting set for opening day, but we can talk NCWA tournament because he's done a ton of SEC games. And it's been following the college basketball landscape all year, call ravaged joining Waddle and Silvy on ESPN one thousand you more excited for the Sweet Sixteen or opening day. That's a good question. I probably opening day only because we don't do this week sixteen and I'm involved with opening day. But this has been too long for us. I think now that we're deep into college hoops every winter we we need to make appearances on Waddell and Soviet during the wintertime. We don't need. We don't need to go three months. I was going through a little withdrawal. Forget this up a little bit. We missed you. Yeah. Hey, I got a baseball question for your Raby. I don't know. Did you see any of the cubs Red Sox game last night? I watch report salon here killed. Yeah. In fact, I'm watching it now. But yeah, I watched it. That's what I was going to ask you, can you believe the Red Sox? I understand he may have cleared whatever protocol but first spring training game. Why did they leave him in? Well, look, I'm sure he did his best to convince them. I assume you saw his first reaction wasn't. Yeah. Went out and said is your head. Okay. And he looked at him. Like, oh my God. Yeah. Oh, I was really bad. Smiled about you. Sure, you could err on the side of caution. It seemed to parents would be that it it was a grazing blow even though it ended up in right field. Yeah. I you could have actually taken them out. He clearly convinced them that wasn't going to be the case. And he went back over to the bullpen after he came out, and I some more. So, and you know, what's weird is you guys know a lot of times football injuries. I know there was a college baseball player who ran into a wall. He got upset I'm fine. And then the next day in class is when he started the field the symptoms of a concussion. So maybe, you know, look, I hope it ain't the case. But it may be one of those things where you get all that adrenaline going. And you say, I'm good. Let's keep going here. How much I've evolved, right? Who would have thought years ago? I would have been the guy calling for somebody that gets hit head baseball to actually be taken of the game. Rightfully so. There you go. So. That's just a sign of maturation growing up. Again. Not really though, he's not joining us. Call Ravitch from ESPN. Of course, I want to ask you about the all these extensions going on. And we had a local one today. Cal Hendrick was re up through twenty twenty four. And I think it's pretty good money actually for a picture of his caliber thing works well for both what's going on in your opinion. I mean is this is this a shift in philosophy because of what happened? In free agency the last couple of years with more guys taking extensions. I think so I think it's an organizational decision. I think that the, you know, we're always trying to get away from the rich getting richer. But I do think that this this current trend allows the teams that are really strong currently to stay strong in the immediate future. Doesn't mean long term. And I'm not sure Hendrickson twenty twenty four. You know, is is a great bargain. Even if the prices they got him four because these strikes me as a guy that's going to be good through twenty one or twenty two. And then then you'll see the downside. But I think in the immediate future signing an Alex bregman in Houston makes a great deal of sense signing Chris sale for five years. Great deal, the Sanford the teams that realize we have great assets. The assets are looking at the future and free agency and thinking wolf, I'm not sure we want to go down that road. So we can get it from our team the veterans did it with the degrom today. You you try to sign your best assets to deals that. They now look at it. So realization of. Well, my last name is not Harper Machado or trout, or maybe even Renato I'm gonna take this to me. It started with Aaron Nola in Philadelphia and the SEC basketball stuff probably to SEC baseball schools in pulmonary at LSU coach both Aaron Nola, and Alex bregman, and the one thing, and I don't know where you guys fall in this. But the one thing that I find offensive to me is when somebody tells some athlete or shares an opinion that he shouldn't have taken that it wasn't enough money that that is such a unique and personal decision. Aaron Nola decides forty million we'll take care of me. And every one of my family members the rest of my life. And that's what I want side for don't don't be part of a union says, you should wait and take more. That's what he wanted to do. It gets up hundred million in Redmond signed for three hundred or ninety. It's not it's not my place in my opinion anyone else's to judge what a player deems. There correct amount of money at that point. I think a lot of the players are real. How much do we really need? I love the environment. And I do think for the union. This is a bit of a change in philosophy that this isn't rogue behavior. But it's certainly a different than we gotta take care of the next generation. We gotta make sure that we're getting the most money. So that the next generation will only exceed that I think that's the change. It's a great conversation. I want to expand more on that and get into Illinois too. And what you thought there based on your opinion. But I'm not gonna let you just escape by with Kyle Hendricks take he's twenty nine. He's he you don't really have to worry about a dip in velocity, do you? And not a velocity guy. I agree. So so so the cubs have like a thirty five year old Cole hamels. They've a thirty four year old John Lasseter who's been very good. I think he maybe even thirty five now. So why do you believe that Hendrix in twenty twenty one could dip because I you know, I because he's not Greg Maddux. That's why. And and I think those guys are rare. And I do think that the finesse pitcher clearly we're in a generation of power are unique you, you know, the power pictures are the ones that are getting rewarded. Why is Dallas Kyko Sheila free agent? That is when I don't get. But I'm getting Dallas cycle three years on a deal. I'm not gonna give Dallas I wouldn't be comfortable giving Dallas Tikal five years on a deal. I think that that type of arm in a rotation is the number four or number five, and as a result when when you see somebody who's twenty nine that is a location guy only, then I then I get a little wary. The power pitcher who becomes the guy that like maybe Zakrzewski Maddox in his career was power guy, the beginning, the evolution of those guys to finesse pitcher, I understand a longer term deal, but finesse pitcher to fitness pitcher to finesse pitcher in just again, in my opinion. I'm not suggesting that it's an error on the cubs. Maybe we'll talk and twenty twenty four and I'll be wrong. But that's why I would be reluctant on a guy like that sale is a good example of of. Okay. These still fairly young at that age. And I think he'll he'll continue to learn how to pitch what new trick is tile Hendrix gonna bring to the table or somebody like him Ravi. There are so many interesting talking points with regard to the cubs in how everyone projects the two thousand and nineteen season to go sylvian. I've talked a lot about the status of Joe Madden. And being in the final year of his contract. I if you were to speculate, why do you think it is that it feels like the cubs just on the surface want to move on from the Joe Madden experienced despite the success? They've had over the last four years Joe on the top step. Yeah. It's a good question. And it's and it's got a lot of even this question alone on the cubs has a lot of parts to it. And I guess I start with when dusty Baker and John Farrell eat and Joe Girardi went into the playoffs, and they all got fired and you say to yourself, wait a minute. All three of these guys veteran guys have been whether organizations for a while half World Series in some cases have been to the playoffs and this year got into the playoffs and in the off season. We let them all go. I think it speaks to the degeneration of what what have you done for me in the last five minutes as opposed to in the last five years seriously. And when somebody like Alex Cora in his first year can win a World Series or AJ Hinch can be flushed out at one place go to Houston and win a world. Series fairly early. I think you fall back on wheat. We believe in our analytics, we believe we have the right players on the field right now within our organization, and we need we need either the right person or the person that's going to listen to the way, we want this thing to the advantaged it order to to draw the most out of our assets that we believe the best team in in the case of the cubs and CEO in jed, I think that they are really really smart. And I think they do recognize that we could change Joe Biden for X, and we could fall in the standings. We could bring a David Rawson here. And then we could finish third. There is a human component here. And I think the human component of Joel Madden has worn worn a little thin. You know, I don't know if there's a shelf life shelf expectancy of a manager. But I think that's part of the trend. Here. And I'll be honest. I I like Joe a lot and I sat with your life. But the idea that every year Joe would say we have two meetings every year spring training, and you know, all star break, and that's the only time talked to the players. I remember sitting with Ed Eduardo, and Tim and the booze and saying don't you at some point wanna wanna do something different for your own sake? How about three meetings? How about that? That gets old if you're an interest in any environment. Like here, we go again in two thousand nineteen the same was we were fifteen and ten and two thousand six don't you want something even for your own personal cell? Something different recognize we gotta shake it. And I think that's I think that's why that happened with is happening, or at least a perception is, but look. I think the cubs. I think because win that division this year. And maybe Joe stays here. They win a World Series. What are you gonna do? But Joe gets to the postseason. They lose in the first round. You could certainly we've seen it. Now, make a change. He's in an amazing. I mean, we're three years removed from their the World Series. And I grew up in Chicago Raby, and you always had the dream that whoever that guy who would take the cobs over the finish line. And finally win that World Series.

"And you saw how good Tennessee could be for spurts. They're able to score and bunches Scofield comes a big three three pointers in the final four zero one. But they didn't look like Tennessee for much today's game in terms of the atmosphere. I was trying to describe to a call or a minute ago that sometimes he's NCWA especially the afternoon games are a little bit different. But you you were there. What was it like? And I think this was was this a second game of the day or the I I can't remember, but what was like up there? And it was nothing like Tennessee dealt with last Saturday and Sunday in Nashville. Well, I was seated right in front of the Colgate fan's Paul and they were the entire game. A lot of different insult some of which I can repeat on the show some of which I can't. But I think as they were in the game longer. I think more of the neutral fans got behind Colgate. The let's go gate chant and so I- Tennissee travels. Well, the represented well here in Columbus. But I think it was very much a neutral atmosphere that it was hard to feed off until the end of the game. So I think the crowd definitely was not a huge factor in favor of the vase. But I don't know how much it necessarily worked against them either. And sometimes it's just a different feel and they played neutral site games, though. So they should understand what it's like I'm interested in the opposition on on Sunday. Because all of us were really worried about Tennessee having to play Cincinnati, theoretically in the same state and closer to home than Tennessee. But that's not exactly what they're going. Deal with. I wha pulled somewhat of a surprise today. Yeah. They did Paul is a team that had struggled down the stretch of the regular season familiar pattern under fan, McCaffrey. But they played one of their better games in quite some time today against that that Cincinnati team Joe we'd camp the true freshman nineteen points in his first NCAA tournament. Game Luca Garza was terrific down low. You magin he'll be matched up at times on grant Williams who only had nine points today for the Vall. So it's a completely different test with Iowa team. That's now rejuvenated winning a game that most thought that they wouldn't. And now, I think if anything Tennessee's going to have the crowd advantage and looking at the Iowa turn out they do also travel. Well, maybe what we will show up for that game on Sunday. But I think Tennessee we'll have more of a crowd edge in that in that contest. You've covered a lot of into basketball. We're not when we say crowded bay. We're not talking about ten fifteen thousand people do does that really matter in a game. Like this that maybe your guy you're crowds a little bit louder. On the other. You're still playing in a foreign arena. So to speak. Yeah. It's a turn amid sport. I mean, there's tournaments early in the season is obviously the conference tournament, and then this event so it shouldn't affect you too much. But it was interesting to hear the Tennessee. Obviously Rick Barnes and also several those players talk about the exile factor. I don't know how much that had to do the crowd. Or maybe it was the fact that they have so much more pressure on them this year as a team that was number one for at least a little portion of the season and has serious high expectations to go certainly further than they did last year. And that's going to be a big point for them going into this weekend's game..

"The the main difference between hemp and marijuana is the level of THC so hemp is grown for low THC, high CD con- content and marijuana is grown for obviously high THC content. So for our products, you legal fifty states and to be and sold across the board. We we are hip company, which means western point three percent THC. The great thing about that. Cougar was forgive me. I didn't grow up the boards. Right. I wasn't sure if you guys had like one to one product so forgive me, CBD course, does not get have any of the psychoactive effects of THC NCAA D oil has been in an products have been available in Massachusetts. And of course, as you said in all fifty states for a while. You know, sometimes is even a bit of a I shouldn't say stigma, but maybe people don't quite understand what it is. Maybe they worry about those psychoactive effects, which really don't happen when you're dealing with the oil, and the great thing about some of this is that you can really apply it directly onto the place that might be sore, and it can really help. But maybe maybe you can tell us about your products. Okay, for sure. So when I say a full spectrum hip oil, there are over one hundred different fighter nutrients and fight. Okay. In the ham class with CBD just being one molecule somebody's sewing oil. That's typically water does just TVD. But what research is found in the technical our products, a particular since we're full spectrum are our products contain over those those hundred different fighter nutrients and the efficacious benefits to that are vast. We have three products in the line that we currently saw one is a capsule one of the picture those are both adjusted orally, and then we have a topical Sabbath as well. So if someone is looking to truth joint, muscle pain, inflammation, things like that research has shown that what you would want to do is use a copper coil for the direct point of relief. Whether it's elbow rest, your back, whatever but still do with the injustice as well. Tincture or the capsule for the full body. He says, well, if you're treating an looking for something, that's you know, we're amounts of stress improved sweet things like that. So you wouldn't want to worry about the topical for those? You would just do one of the injustice. As far as Arcos, and I do want to say right now being Heff oil is treated as a supplement and not a drug. We are very strictly forbidden from making the FDA claim. So our share stories that research has shown as well as benefits we've had from, you know, the over seventy six players we have on on the PGA tour tours using our products currently talking about the PGA tour. What about the other major sports the the sports that obviously a regulated such as the NFL where? Someone gets a four game suspension. I'm not connecting to your product, obviously. But or any of the players that you know, of outside of football because technically they could probably get suspended, but say in basketball are some players kind of taking a look at this and seeing if it can help them with those, you know, those aches and pains and all those things that they deal with on a daily basis. Being a great question and one I get asked a lot, you know. I'll start with the world anti doping agency, which is called water. They oversee all on regulations regarding supplements. Ah performance enhancing and potential abuse. Which they list THC as as a struggled potential abuse. I don't think we could probably all agree. It doesn't really have any performance enhancing benefits for the most part. But each sport has a different color level of THC allowable in your system. It's it's controlled by what is called nanograms nanograms at the water level. Which is what the PGA tour follows. It's a hundred and fifty nanograms so players can have an amount of their body. And they're they're they're they feel comfortable. We're never going to tell anybody that you would not fail the drug test. But the players are comfortable enough with our products being less than point three percents THE, they'll be safe and any testing measures. Grabs. Other sports are a little bit different. I believe the NBA's at thirty five grams. I can't remember exactly what NFL is NFL's actually talking about taking THC off the banned substance list hockey does not test for THC soccer does not have any drug testing at all at least the ones soccer week that I I researched, but it's pretty fascinating. But we want to weep THC in our Sada because of the way it works synergistically with the other fighter nutrients in the in the oil, we want that to happen. And studies have shown that if someone is just using CV oil. It's like a bell curve. It works. It works. It works. You get up to the top of curfew tip over the top. And then it quits working for you. Taking more products does not help at all. So leaving adds to what is called the entourage affects the way or all those fighter nutrients work together. But the whole drug testing thing is has been pretty fascinating for me to to research, and and to explain to people, and, you know, the ones four to one association warned people NCWA nanogram testing tolerance levels. It's only five anti-graft. So I have a son plays college baseball when he was in high school, he was taken temple, and I told him Jack you can't do that anymore. We're not gonna take any risk with that. So NC double A's pretty tight. But the other associations athletes are pretty comfortable with the tolerance level will any of the athletes, you know, speak on behalf. You talked about the PGA. Maybe if any basketball players were they come out endorsed the product and how important that would be for your business plan. Oh, no for sure we signed p PJ champ champions tour player Scott McCarron to an endorsement contract last year. He is our he's our spokesperson, we are ready to go with signing PGA tour players, but the PGA tour is not currently allowing that to happen and still hemp oil companies are NSF for sports certified, and we're working closely right now, they're pretty confident we are going to be the first company that will go through NSF for sports certification. That's basically the company that certifies all supplement. So if you're an Olympic athlete or any sport athletes, if you're looking at testing the product, and you're worried about maybe steroid content or something like that. When it has the NSF for sports seal on it. That athletes comfortable and saying, okay, I'm good to go with us. So once that happens, we've got PGA tour players lined up right now ready to bring on his endorsement contracts, Kurt way, we've got PJ tour players out there that as we provide them product through our tour wrapped they're providing us pictures and testimonials we did have our first win on the PGA tour a few weeks ago at the Genesis open. And we've got sixteen players on that tour taking products with the champions tour. We almost have the whole field. We sixty five players on that tour from Kenny Perry VJ Singh Bernard while they're Scott McCarron. Tom Lehman big-name individuals out there that I can use their name their they've given us permission and they're enjoying the benefits, whether it's you know, pain relief or or anxiety or sleep or workout recovery. Some of the players are taking the products before they tee off now. To just help them. Relax, more on the golf course. Suck on that part. That's fascinating. Steve I actually was that's exactly what I was gonna ask you about next to them looking at just quote from functional remedies C E O about sort of the mental and physical strain. Can you just expand on this Anak? Yes. Our body has what is called Endo canal system. And it's interesting when research was being done on cannabis. It wasn't being done in the United States because of the DA and regulations going on as they were terming Hampton marijuana to be the same thing, which was a controlled substance. But the studies were going on in Israel, and as they were studying the plant they discovered and Indo canal system within our own body on this was in the nineteen eighties. So our body actually produces canal. The plant produces Canaveral. I called cytokine advocates are body produces Endo capital. I can have you know, body based. And so what is happening when you take. The oil is the Canaveral toys are interacting with a CD one and CD to receptors in our body, which affect the basically the whole regulatory system in our in our complete body from head to toe. And so, you know, we get people are you there skeptical. They're like, well, how can this help with joint pain and how can this talk with sleep and how this can help with anxiety? Well, it's helping because it's interacting with those two receptors which control all bodily functions. Yeah. It is so interesting, and certainly I mean, I guess I wouldn't realize and that's because I'm not a sports person. Like like sap is here. But you know, the toll a in the strain that a lot of pro golfers are dealing with you know, when they're when they're out on tour. Yeah. No, no question about it. And pro golf is one of the, you know with functional remedies. We're one of the very few brands that are out there, they're targeting athletes in particular, because there's there's a plethora of CD oil companies out there. But we've taken the approach with my particular lying in does sport going after athletes, and we're looking at athletes that are endurance. Runners cyclists tennis players cross-fitters, boxers. I we're looking at motor sports as well. It's it's pretty much endless areas of different athletes from different sports that could benefit from the products. So it's not just golf. It's where we're moving the company in in different directions, but golf was the foothold for us. I I'm a PGA golf professional. I've been in the business a long time. And this was kinda my idea of what's introduced to call. So let's also what's not called us sendo golf what's called Indo sports. Because. There is a much bigger market out there. Speaking of to really well known golfers. Tiger Woods and Fred Couples have had a lot of injury concerns with their backs with tiger with his knee. If you had any connection with either or both of those great players. We have with one of the two older of the two. I won't use the same. I figured that out already my age. Yeah. We did not have that elite green. "They're not hungry for that competition. I imagine they were in their youth. When is the next game wins the next term? Where's the next trophy wins? The next Pat on my back from from dad or coach or mom or whoever it is in their inner circle. But sometimes that does go away. There seems to be a really weird balancer. I bring this up to you. And I'm going I'm kind of paying this ball around. But I just wanted your take on it. But I'm looking at the NCWA, right? We got March madness coming up. I'm a wrestling fan. We got the NCW tournament coming up in a couple of weekends cliff. Those guys would in those gals. Those athletes would never miss a competition. Whether it was a hard day or an easy game. Whether it's going to sell out an arena, or it was just your local friends popping over to support you. They would never miss the competition. They urine for it. They crave it. They beg to be in those and there's no money involved and for most of them, there's no Famer attention involved. It's this purist. And is about the competition in somewhere over time that goes away, the NCWA who man, and there are very respected included by me sports body in this country. They're never dirty for the way, they spread the money around because they're very upfront to say, we aren't we aren't spreading it around or keeping it all, but we're going to give you an opportunity, and we will be here next for some reason professional sports, and you could talk about you can get in the same car and you can crash week after week. But for some reason a professional sports where they go. No, we are going to share the money. We are going to spread this around, you instantly. Then come to the naysayers go you. Didn't spread enough, and that's tough. Right. It's a tough balance. And it's interesting that you bring up the March madness. And you know, people doing this for free. Have you heard of Zion? Williamson yoke course. Well, did you see he got hurt a couple of weeks ago? And he literally blew out his shoe. He is so big and so strong. He went and stepped and he absolutely exploded a shoe when he hurt his knee, thirty three seconds. Barack Obama was there. Yes you discipline. How big of a game? He was there. And so he hasn't played. But it he's he's about ready to come back and start planning he's healed up. But he by all accounts, he will be the number one pick in the NCAA draft. No matter what. And there were a lot of people, including former professional athletes that came out and said he should never stepped on an NCAA basketball court again because if he blows out his knee. It could cost him tens or hundreds of millions of dollars. If it's a bad enough. Injury. And he's not getting paid by the NCAA. They don't he doesn't. Oh, them anything. He should just not play. But I think he is going to play mostly because of the reasons that you brought out as he's a really competitive guy. He came to Duke because he wants to win an NCAA championship. And he's just going to go out and do that all and it's I think it's a little bit different in in basketball because that was kind of a freak injury. And chances if you really getting hurt are probably not that high, but the NFL and things like that your chance of getting hurt is much much higher. When you go out and compete than it is probably playing basketball, if they're real thing, very real thing. Well, I come to with the argument of you need to step out there and you need to play because a promise was made. I come to you from you have fans, you presold tickets, and those coaches promised to bring their team they need to bring their team. I can remember back to being a little kid in one thousand nine hundred eighty nine and what you're talking about the balls, but the bulls. They were the the bulls were talking about you're talking about Pippen. You're talking about Jordan. You're talking about Phil Knight run the team they come to Portland important wasn't that big of a deal, but Clinton ice swear to goodness if Jordan Pippen had not stepped on the rotten moon. "But it's not one hundred to get me to take the field. But there is the the ACC is interesting because there are teams that are NC Syracuse. We agree as at NC double A tournament team. Right. Yep. Eighty to one Clemson likely and NCWA tournament team sixty two one NC state at least a bubble team eighty to one. So there's some big numbers on teams that are gonna make the NCWA tournament there in those numbers. Come because it's so top heavy and the top three Virginia, Duke and North Carolina. It is it is expensive to to buy those teams won twenty if you want if you want to have Virginia they are the favourite plus one seventy five on Duke and North Carolina is at plus three fifty. So that those are those are the numbers at least the latest numbers on the AC. See I'm gonna go ahead and go with Virginia. It's plus one twenty is not great value. And I actually think North Carolina's probably a little bit better value, plus three fifty here in a conference where the other two top teams are priced so low UNC's got to head to head wins overdue and they've won fourteen fifteen that one loss, though, came to Virginia who just proved to be a bad match up for the tar heels Virginia avoids having to play the both of the other elite ACC teams while Duke and North Carolina have to play each other. If the brackets days, chalk Virginia's healthy, they're playing well at the right time. They, and I believe this Virginia team is on a mission to to sort of make right? What went wrong for them last season? And when they weren't fully healthy mind you when they lost to a sixteen seat in the opening round, which I think was very embarrassing for those guys this experienced squad..

"It's really hard to say. I mean, especially this case because Missouri, they didn't see this coming at all. So it's kinda hard to predict at this point. They felt like they had a really good relationship and working relationship for two years with the NCW enforcement staff. So they're not at odds with the NCWA per se it, it's it's more about the infractions committee. They're upset about nuts. Just a panel of four people. So I think they kind of enjoy stork met with some media here yesterday and Missouri's compliance director. They presented like there was some real disconnect between the NCW enforcement staff, and then the committee on fractions. And I'm sure there some of that stuff that they discussed there will be brought up in the appeals process. You know, it it's hard. It's hard to say are they going to see anything here where they think well that the the group really screwed up here this postseason ban. You know, why did they why did they prescribe this when it all comes down to what's in the penalty matrix? And if it's within their. It's at their discretion to prescribe that as the penalty there is one clause. It says extenuating circumstances allows the committee on infractions panel to either overlooked penalties severity or maybe even make it worse than what they deserve. And that's what Missouri's gonna gonna say they're gonna say, hey, you, can you could have used this clause and considered. How unique this case was and and not gone with necessarily the the penalty that this matrix as you're supposed to the Dave. This was a little bit different. I think than than most cases where it was not a full panel. It will it was a panel of people on that committee. And and you know, I lost track of it a little bit over the last couple of days, but we had a lot of Missouri fans calling in saying there was bias. And there were your prejudicial people on that with with a few days to digest all this. Tell us what you know of in relation to this panel. And the makeup. Well, the only one this is the only one that Missouri's brought up that I think that you could make case for one of the four people on the panel is Carol Cartwright, she's a former president at a believe Kent state and Boeing green. But now, she is the co chair of the Knight commission, and she is has a very prominent role on this working group within the NC double really push for academic reform in response to the NC double A kind of dropping the ball and the North Carolina case since she has been such an outspoken advocate for all this reform, Missouri thought that it's it's kind of a conflict of interest for her to be deciding a case when she this is she has been an advocate for this. And and the point is her working group, and the all the ideas that that they have had brought up with some of it might be very good have not been made into NCWA law yet. So that's where they feel like, you know, she maybe she should have to recuse herself from being on that panel. As insure great Sankey. Did. I mean, he's on the committee on Braxton's panel. Obviously, he can't sit in on one of his schools cases. But no, I I've heard from the fans they think well, this is there's some Kansas or Arkansas alums who are out there to get Missouri or some rival schools. Now, that's not the case. But, but there is a you know, you can make a case maybe with with her from the night commission being on that panel. So this would be in in the parlance of politics tantamount to what politicians often referred to as an activist judge. I think that's a good way of putting it. Sure, absolutely. You're listening to make sense. I mean, if you're if you're trying to change, but but I again, you're you're talking about are you not one of four people. Right, right. And there's other people who had obviously had a voice and was able to express their opinion. We don't know what went on behind closed doors in those meetings and hearings, Missouri. You know that for their part they said they actually hearing when they went and talked to the panel..

"We went to the Orange Bowl and loss and then immediately after my head coach got a ten million dollar extension. And that was when I was like, oh, we aren't a team we're business. And that was when the light went on for me there is perhaps no more confounding labor market in sports than the one. Who's organizers insist on saying it is not a labor market? I'm talking about big time. American college sports run by the national collegiate Athletic Association, or NCWA college sports, especially basketball, and football have also grown massively over the past. Few decades. They generate about thirteen billion dollars a year nearly as much as the NFL, but the Lieber is essentially free aside from room and board and. Some epidemic scholarships college athletes received no compensation, so where is that thirteen billion dollars going? So it goes through supporting other sports, it goes to building bigger and better facilities that goes to paying college presidents, and coaches and funding the NC double A like it goes a lot of different places. But it doesn't go to the people who are the labor on the field. And just how much is going to the coaches the Duke economist Charles clot filter looked at compensation data for various personnel from forty four public universities that have big football programs over the past thirty years. He found that full professors got a salary increase of forty three percent adjusted for inflation, not bad college presidents got an eighty nine percent increase over that time. Even better had the football coaches do over those thirty years football coaches compensation increased more than eleven hundred percent from an average of around three hundred thousand dollars to more than three point six. Million dollars a year back in nineteen eighty-five. Football coaches were earning slightly less on average than the college presidents. Now, they earn about six times as much they're athletes. Meanwhile are still playing for free. And if you want a career in the NBA or NFL, you pretty much have to play at least some college ball since both leagues have eligibility requirements if forbid athletes from going pro straight out of high school, Dominic Foxworth, again, if that was the end of the story in every player, then went on to have NFL careers, it'll be unfair. But whatever like, it's you're not gonna lose any sleep for those guys. But the vast majority of the guys and I have several teammates who because it is not considered work. They're not privy to workers compensation. They're not privy to extend it healthcare. So one of my best friends in college. He had aspirations to play professional football. He had three knee surgeries while in college. The few years ago. His doctor told him that he was going to have to have both of his knees replaced by the time. He was fifty. And he didn't play professional sports. And there's nothing that any college football team or or governing body is going to do for him in that case. And that to me is is tragic that a lot of people benefited from that. So the old fashioned argument for why this was acceptable. Was that this is like what comments call a tournament model? Right. Whenever you got a lot of people competing for the top of the pyramid. Whether it's show business or sports, or whatever, you know, the bottom of the pyramid. There's lots and lots and lots and lots of people they're willing to do whatever it takes for practically no money. It's kind of weird unpaid apprenticeship some people accept that as okay, others don't. But what strikes me especially noteworthy about sports is the degree and magnitude of sacrifice physical, and otherwise is larger I would argue than trying to become an actor trying to become a writer try and whatnot. So. So can you just talk about that component on what you think would be a better solution? I think bringing up the tournament model is is interesting because I could understand how some people would look at that and say that it fits here. And that's why this is fair. But I think as a country we decided that that wasn't fair a long time ago. There are plenty of jobs where that's true like just about every job was like. The barista at Starbucks like there are plenty of people out there who are capable of being baristas in you could probably allow Starbucks to to pick them against each other negotiate down down down down down..

"Four G L T E networks straight ahead in interesting answer from NCWA president Mark on the future of collegiate Eastport sports. You'll hear what he said next on Spain and Fitz on ESPN radio, obviously throughout the. Of the night. We have talked a lot about harden a lot about Roger Goodell. That's a this. Interesting. Little nugget just came across from the NC, the Belay, and it's about something that's controversial for a lot of people, Sarah e gaming, and and there's this movement of trying to figure out east sports, I should say with these boards where they belong in a college campus where they belong in college environment. Several colleges now have started clubs that are competing against each other. But it's not sanctioned by the NC, double A and the end suitable as doesn't seem to really have a lot of interest in it and the president of the NC double A, Mark. Emmett has spoken out on it. Part of the quote of note, we may have an opportunity in front of us to apply are valued east boards, better align, those games to our values to change not just what happens in our communities. What happens across your campuses and more broadly? What happens in society, we don't want to ever change our values to fit a game or some other entity. We want to change that entity to fit our values. He's talking about essentially a couple of things noted in the article, the misogynistic nature, the male dominated sport of east. We want to call it that for east sports. And and also the violence that's in it. So it's interesting that the answer as having to come out, and sort of defend their position on not embracing east sports, but it's not a total surprise to me. Yeah. This is really complicated. And I'm not even begin to understand all the very different in necessary pieces of context to have to understand either. What he's saying or the future of gaming in general. I think the idea of it being primarily male dominated is likely a concern in terms of title mine. And if you start doing a lot of scholarships in this how does that affect other sports, right? There are primarily male gamers at least at the tournament level, and what we've seen at the professional level like NBA and e league and everything else. You know, I try to be very open minded about this. Because as you know, my natural view of this is very good off my lawn. Not because I don't understand why they're fun. I just it's not I would want to get a scholarship in giving other other choices what I understand that. There are people making money off of it. They're all people getting college, educations because of it. And it it is sort of odd to make quotations public about the, you know, the violence of east boards while also propping up football. I understand that the optics that are not very good. But there are actual studies. Linking violent video games, and actual aggression outside of games. Right. And it might not be a massive uptick. But the evidence is definitive that people who play regularly are more likely to be adolescence be sent to the principal's office more likely to be violent in general for fighting. And so that I guess is something that you do. Have to think about especially as we're dealing with epidemic of shootings in our in our country right now, the idea of these. Like games where you're actually shooting other people and becoming potentially desensitized to that idea. Not understanding, you know, the the the realities of it, I can see why some especially older people view this and don't don't see it the same way they'd see playing sports for scholarships. Well, and I think he's sports is in a complicated space for the NC double A one thing that should be noted is east sports tournaments often.

I mean, there might be a few thanks or Kentucky should never lose. But most of us are happy with what's going on with Tennessee. I think re far is doing a great job. I think Alabama Auburn what's going on there. It makes the SEC conference stronger. No doubt. We have a better chance to get more schools into the tournament. Well, it makes it makes every time. Tennessee place Kentucky and to it's always a pretty big game. But it's a it's a national debt now. And like the game the other night Vanderbilt. "Basketball. College basketball is is is more about him. Personally. Personally. I think for him was a young player that I will shut it down. Now. Let me let me let me. I would stop playing because I feel that he could risk a major injury that could really hurt history. Football players are doing it. Why not the college football players are skipping a bowl games. And they're getting ready for the comeback. If I was him. I know him lease NBA, I'm out of here. My favorite part is earlier in that soundbite. When you hear Tracy starting to protest with Rachel. And then by the end of it. He's like, you know, what? Yeah. Absolutely, right. Shut it down. Let's go. I think boiling was down in oversimplifying basketball's a lot different sport than football. The threat of major violence is much much less. Zion is not someone who has been presented with an injury at this point. That would make an have to think about this ally. What we saw Nick Bosa in NCWA football this past season with the Ohio State buckeyes, someone who had a lot a lot left to play for as far as what was at stake for that team. But the injury made that too close to call was gone. There is a lot of season left a lot at stake left for a Duke team that he signed up to play for one that we know is helped his stock rise. But who is also elevated the platform of and ultimately got. About what Zion wants and this kid who seems to be really enjoying the stage enjoying playing with these other high profile freshman is a part of this do class and ultimately. I know we say this feels like a cop out like would I be able to do this? No. But me projecting. What I would do in this situation or me saying what's good for Zion in certain situations. You kind of understand that this isn't football. And a lot of ways I'm pretty comfortable was I on being out there on the court. If you're an NS Kanter shoes host geared. Would you be? Yes.
