Washington Post Corroborates NBC's Lack of China Abuses
"Now the Washington compost is reporting that NBC which holds the exclusive broadcast rights for the Winter Olympics There's not made these issues a prominent feature of a coverage over the past two weeks And neither is the Washington compost for that matter But since the opening ceremony the post Paul farhi reported that he has been in a fine any example of an NBC Olympics announcer discussing the Chinese Communist Party's human rights atrocities I would ask Paul farhi if that is his name If the human rights atrocities by the communist Chinese against the Uyghurs and we have seen photos of these inhumane conditions and so forth have been on the cover of The Washington Post more than once or twice Far he and his piece the other day wrote that he reached out to an NBC sports spokesperson to ask for examples of the networks continued focus on these issues And it's coverage of Olympic events but beyond comments made by NBC announcers Mike Tariq and he was yanked He was yanked and Savannah Guthrie in addition to other panelists on February 4 NBC couldn't provide further support for NBC's assertion that it has extensively covered these issues Far he went on to explain that NBC also cited report a week ago about the Chinese tennis star in three time Olympian who's been the subject of international attention He noted NBC has also said it hasn't requested an interview with her Despite her presence at times just a few feet from NBC's cameras at the game So NBC has demonstrated that it is nothing more than a shill for the communist Chinese much like Thomas Friedman And much like Trudeau up in Canada the Biden family the Pelosi family the McConnell family And on and on and

"You give you a couple of examples of of mack jones making some very obvious rookie. Mistakes in my opinion last night his first drive before second. Snap delay game penalty and okay. That's bad it's on the quarterback you gotta be able to command the huddle understand the timing of the situation. What makes it worse. Is that when there were officials at the practice between the giants and the patriots on thursday. Mack jones had a delay of game penalty. And so not only. Are you making an error. But you're doing what is a car. You know what what is qualified as a cardinal sin here in new england which is your now an error repeater and so there are a little moments like that holding onto the football a little bit too long at times last night in jersey. I thought where i i could see. Bill belichick saying the kid can play. He is impressive. he's still not ready. He's still not as ready as i would like them to be before throwing him into the fire. That is the nfl regular season. So i could certainly see that being perspective. Fill throw this theory at you cam. We'll start the season. I think you have a short leash. But i think you'll start the first four games saints is going to be tough that's game. Three buccaneers obviously tough. You don't want max first game to be against time brady. I don't think and they got the dolphins in the opener which will be tough and in the jets in between that. I think we five. They play the houston. Texans who are going to be horrible and six of their next seven opponents after week four against tampa bay had losing records last year mr playoffs to me if cam struggles in i think he kinda will that is the perfect time to throw in as the starter. What do you think about that at the nice. Cushy landing spot isn't it. Houston probably the worst roster in the nfl maybe the worst roster that that we've seen the last few years in the nfl shawn watson blank. It makes a lotta sense. And if you're looking at it that way and your bill belichick you're also able to maybe steal a month's worth of games and if you're looking at your rookie and yes he's got all this promise but you also understand. He really doesn't have an nfl body yet and not only that but it looks like he might be dealing with something with his lead leg and that knee on his left leg. He's wearing a brace. Now which is new over the course. Last couple of weeks he went down and philadelphia was a little bit slow getting up. We haven't seen it bother him all that much and you know some of the throws it. He's making these preseason games. These practices would tell you that. It's not bothering him. But there might be something there and if you really are sure that he's going to be able to get through a seventeen game season you might try to steal some weeks early on and so i like that scenario. I think that's a very realistic scenario. Chris the one thing that i keep coming back to though when it comes to this conversation is we know. Cam has a ton of experience in the league right. He does not have a ton of experience in this offense by his own admission last year at the end last year he felt like he really didn't have a great grasp on what josh mcdaniels was asking him to do because he had spent some time away but season because he'd been dropped into the program late in the offseason last year and it was sort of a chaotic year overall for him and so he again by his own..

"And go and go into that buccaneers game with two legs to stand on. What i would say is what would i would say is. Why wouldn't you do that. Why not start cam newton. I would say maybe two reasons number one is that really consistently over the course of training camp here mack. Jones has been the better passer. There've been i would say two days. Where cam newton definitively had the better day other than that. It's been either very close between the two and works out there in the boston's foxboro area heat humidity and and tracking every pass through the sweat. I would say it's either been close or mack. jones clearly. Been the better guy. More accurate down the field quicker in terms of his release and in understanding where to go with the football and again. This past week against the giants i mean. He carved up when he was the only guy running with the first team on wednesday with cam newton out. He carved up the giants first team defense all afternoon and the giants the next day in practice. And they're pretty open about this. But i talked to some coaches on the giants sideline they said. Yeah we dialed some stuff up for mac. We weren't necessarily planning on doing that going into the week but yesterday we were embarrassed so on day one. They get torn apart by a rookie and on day two. They feel like they have to get exotic to give them some problems and they give him some problems. But that that's number one. If you feel like you wanna have the kinda passing offense. Spread it out. Have a quarterback. Who's a point guard like. Tom brady not equal to tom. Brady but like tom brady in terms of the style with which he plays. Your choice might be mack jones. I think the other reason they might eventually go with him that they feel like he has a healing that is unknown right now and if you give him time early in the season and you let them grow and you let them learn and you let them develop over the course of the year you could have a really good player by seasons at if you decide maybe you wanna play him starting midseason because you wanna see what he can do and you feel like you know you just have to get him in there eventually because he's a first round. Pick your just delaying the clock and and you might not have that growth and that that potential being achieved by seasons end when you really hoping to be clicking know that those are the reasons i would say. Maybe you would think about playing the rookie early. And i'll say this we all know. Preseason is very vanilla as much as you think team and things up. They are not and when the regular season comes and young. Quarterbacks are exposed. Which happens all the time. I mean bella. Check with a master at exposing young quarterbacks and making them falter. I just me with think. I'm going to go with the guy that i know can get us on the right track and and lead us back to the playoffs Given that my ex is a flourishing without me. And i think that's why he'll go. I think that's that's part of the reason why he'll go with cam. Newton i think he just feels like there is more certainty. There is as good as mack. Jones has looked in the preseason in these practices. You're right it's just practice. It's just preseason cam. Newton has a decade in the league has infinitely more experienced looking at nfl. Defenses and understanding..

"To watch your favorite youtube star fight. Someone and they started this whole thing with youtubers fighting each other. Kfi and and You know like so. They saw what that did and so they took their businessmen. And i don't what it sounded like to me. Especially after ron was like i want a rematch. Would it sounded like to me was. This is aw. Wwe slash boxing all combined in one right. We don't want these guys to get beat up because they're the cash cows. So do you think last night there have been people that put it out there on twitter come on. Don't you think it was fixed. If no i'm not saying it's fixed but if you remember when when floyd fatah's brother yea and look like he held him up we did i talk to he. He caught up with a good job was a year. Oh it's not part of the plan. Right if floyd mayweather goes up there knocks kid out in the first round second round. Whenever what's the next fight. Look for a look. Like for for logan paul. What what is that. How do you generate right. If tyron woodley goes out in knox look what like he almost did. Knox jake's through the ropes right out or have been out if it wasn't for the road right. So what what. What is the next fight like. You said taryn. Willie may four times amount of money. He's ever made in a fight and he was a champion of for and you have. Ufc for years. Let that sink in so to me. This is entertainment. this is entertainment. And they'll if one of these boys one of these brothers fight conor mcgregor. It'll rival it. It'll it'll rival. Whatever pack yao and in floyd mayweather did pay per view is big about that type of money. I agree and now mcgregor smaller. That's the only question but you're right if you know if his walking around weight gets up to one eighty and he wants to fight it that way even though he's basically done as an ma fighter you're right he could make a ton of money he can hear another hundred million dollars like he made a fighting flow baby here. Here's the thing teddy. I think alluded to it but didn't say this directly. I think he from what it boils down to is guy.

"Rebecca you have you become a significant part of of nbc sports. You don't get one of the signature hosting positions unless that's the case at the same time. When you event when you initially came ten be sports. You were tied to the premier league that you came as the host and and sort of theoretically one with think that as long as nbc had the premier league you'd stick around now that you've been there for eight years Do you look at your future with nbc. Sports like differently. Or do you still feel that you would be at least tied professionally. At least for you for nbc. But for you would you be tied professionally to them having the premier league. I think we've seen richard and wendy. Nhl and losing the nhl nbc. But anything can happen. And i've been companies sedans Went bust under my feet. Espn that lost the rights. When i was there. I really don't take anything granted and i am i. You know i don't see myself tied to anything or anyone I love my job. I love doing the premier league. I love working on the premier league nbc. I think they've done an incredible job of raising the profile of this league in this country to something that i don't think anyone so coming certainly not when i joined in two thousand thirteen i joined thinking i'll be here for years ago back to england would just be a great experience. This is turned into a bit of a juggernaut Which i'm incredibly proud of so. I i don't i'm i'm no great. It's that's great. Look into the future. i'm actually too good looking to feature. I think i've said this before. My husband has to ramey in and tells me that the future costs for at south. And i think he's right and i think that you know we're coming up tools negotiations for the new primarily grizedale at some point who knows in the next few months And it's a very popular product and they'll be a lot of. I'm sure a lot of networks interested and we take pride in that you know because i don't think they'd have been quite as interested had nbc not taken aware. It's gone so there's a lot of pride in that. And i and i'm i'm very very different person aged forty but i am now that i was the who arrived. Eight years ago in terms of i feel much more settled in my head who i am i can offer i like to do and i don't i don't have a plan as such i. Just i think. I could be quite a. I can afford to be quite reactionary to what happens. I'm i'm i really don't know what that will be But why didn't of is it's been it's been eight years of of magic And what team and a time. And i'm i don't know if i'll ever really realize the extent of the impact. Nbc's had on the sport until maybe Little bit further down the line. I think that's something that pm usa who who runs the premier league and be salesperson says is that we know the impact. It's had until maybe we're a little older. But i'm just starting to get the sense of the impact. It's had an something that i i will always be proud of no matter what happens or will appreciate you answering that. Not an easy question and we will Yeah no one's asking negotiate on this podcast. Which would be your agent would be like rebecca. What are you doing so but we will follow that and you know and and which for if nothing else Rebecca lowe is part of primarily coverage. No matter where that is You've seen her on. Nbc she's one of the host of olympic games. She's obviously the host of nbc sports groups premier league coverage i mean like The the official guests. I think of the men in blazers podcasts or anything else i need to resume you up here rebecca. I think we're i think we're about that's about it. Yeah let's all right. Rebecca you're free to go to sleep. Rebecca lowe thank you very much for joining me from tokyo and continued success. I'm sure we will speak again.

"You have merely starting crazily enough very soon are able to process any kind of prep during the games or or do you have to just basically do olympic prep and then second. That's over make the hard turn to premier league now. I'm starting to collapse. So when i finished on may twenty third. I primarily down and i pray every day fielded picks and forgot about the primarily health. That was the euro's because nobody was talking primarily token euros then. I really went double down on the olympics. When my us go ahead for the first two weeks this past week i have found myself starting to turn talksport radio back on. So if i'm you know just pottering about the room before the were you know just before i go to bed is well. I do in america will. I have to explore on a national. I've solved this past week. And it's coincided with big stories about hurricane inject religious things so it's just onto deceit back into my brain and we've just started to receive emails again from the department the primarily department that we have these researchers and they send out clips every few days so those are just altered arriving. Today i opened my e mail to twelve conference cool alerts with the ball and with the team. Starting on tuesday. I get home a month and i have my conference call on tuesday another one on thursday up on friday and a beco-. I'm back on the friday next friday So it's a. I'm making that crossover now. A has to really because it's coming convulse. Richard is you know and the stories are coming big time. So he's big cross down. The i saw the latest odds from bookmakers man city to favorite chelsea second liverpool third manchester united fourth tottenham v. Obviously there's been a lot of transfer news that you're where does that sound right to you in terms of the The teams that we should be paying attention to manchester city chelsea. Let me seems like many of the same big clubs that were used to man. City chelsea liverpool manchester united tottenham. I'm surprised that go to be honest. I'm surprised to learn that. Top until five. Because i would have thought harry will be gone by the end of the trans yet by the way that might have been before that. So let's say my top four. Yeah i'm still surprised because it doesn't have a good season but if a club in disarray the yes especially since that. Get ingredients your parents having a medical. Cain sounds like he's going to call chelsea which is good. We won't we just won't city to run away with it. Chelsea united liberal half to strengthen and united half with sancho veron and hoping to call chelsea liverpool. A little. Bit nervous about liverpool. I know they're getting van. Dyke back to joe gomez back the back but that front line wasn't really firing. Last season has yet to us as far as the wet yet to be strengthened. So they need to do something croppies to do something but yeah fingers. Cr- i say every of crops crossing might get more than just a one or two horse race and have had a few of that which would be great but it's difficult to past city though they get greenish kane. I mean goodness being show. I even bother turning up next friday. Probably know we'll pick the contract says you have to charge two more at one one one last one for soccer and then one final broadcasting one to you obviously watched you watched england at The euros it's kind of an amazing tournament. Actually one of those tournaments that really seemed to live up live up to its advanced billing. What do you think this ultimately means for england in the world cup you're from there you know how much of a mega story could possibly be if If they win the the the world cup and then also you had obviously also the context of of the racist abuse. Some of those players took. I mean it's the world cup is gonna come very very fast and your home country is going to be like a very very significant factor. Both i think on the field and off the field just in terms of discussion of what's going on we'll be significant part of the world cup and twenty two. I think listen. Richard a crystal palace fan gareth southgate came through chrysalis. I watched him when i was a kid. We week out a the man think. He's a super human being think he made a huge amount of eras think. He approached the tournament wrongly considering the personnel he had And made pool management decisions of the penalties of the substitutions in the final We will never have a better chance with the squad. We had at home in front of a packed crowd at wembley when the teams would actually that great italy deserve to doubt. But i feel going into the well competent and of course south. They won't be fired. And i'm not necessarily saying he should be fired because difficult enemies not going to be difficult. Somebody who's done is what is to be fair of the bob's box. I would say that having spoken to many former pros and some current an card manages night but many of them believe yes. He's done well but what could he done. Had he been a little bit more adventurous unless conservative used the players who he had a his disposal. I mean i. I know i talk about law my instagram. But jack really. She's about to go to. The biggest company in england or one of the biggest in england was successful company england for one hundred million pounds bought by currently the best manager of the world and he doesn't even get a start at the yours. That's mystifying to me. And every time he came only played. Well so i think it was a missed opportunity i think arizona made and i'm novus that will go to cats are in twenty twenty two and lessons have been learned because as much as i- door gas off and everything he stands for a human. He has no got a wealth of experience as a manager. So he he said after the game. I'm still learning. Well i think when you're you're managing you got to much learned. That was kind of the whole point. Is that you in england anyway. It's becoming manager. You're the real deal. You'll almost a final product. You don't need to be still learning. And he's not surrounded himself with anybody by the way could help that all his stalled jones steve holland. Olders chris powder relatively inexperienced coaches. See maybe as okay but still young. So i don't i want i worry. Less is what we learned and we'll be having the same conversation off to cattle and eventually generation of great players. And i hope i'm wrong but it will pass them by and i just try. It hasn't happened because we don't get a generation like this very often in england. You decided to upgrade your outdoor deck..

"Fourteen you a test which will be supplies for us. We drop off at the nbc office. And then you know almost you policy you carry on soon as you post a fourteen and that final tests than you will out of soft corentin. So corentin is not in my hotel room. I'm not in a hotel restaurant. And i'm allowed in my studio. I'm not morale's So i've done that for fourteen days. I'm now clear. But to be honest with you richard with my schedule. I haven't got time to go anywhere else So i'm actually kind of living softcore team throughout the whole of this and then the hotels very strict so you wear gloves when you eat a certain amount of people in the elevator owner of the normal things. You'd expect an when i go to the studio. It's everyone's mosques in rural social dissing best we can. So it's it's kind of like going back in time in a way to march twenty twenty. Because i left the states. Three weeks ago california was doing especially where i live was was doing well. You almost wouldn't the kind of thing anymore. So this is very very different to that but yeah protocols show. Are you able to attend anything or have you. Have you seen any competition as a spectator. No none i. I'm not one hundred percent. I think i would be able to now If that's something that. I would like to try to do every other olympic games. I've done so. This is my fourth now. I used to go to something every day It's either before or after my show the difference. Hey the is my show is very long and it's all night long and even though you kind of find a rhythm there's no getting away from the fact that if you have a normal shift you do sleep for longer i mean. I can't see pas lunchtime so really. i'm only getting four or five hours sleep. It doesn't bode well for kind of the rest of the day if you didn't go bouncing around to kind of try and conserve my energy and try and get through the night and it's a it's a live show. It's not prerecorded. So there's a huge amount of energy that is required as pressure pressure myself process a huge amount of knowledge. So i would love to see something. I hope i can get out to see something. That isn't one hand. I'm here to do the job of a night to do. The daytime is. That's my priority. Rebecca year on air talent. So you can only control what you can control. And that's obviously your performance your preparation what you do during your shift but you are smart enough and aware enough to know that viewership for these games are down now. We can sort of talk about for hours as to the factors to the y. In different people will sort of argue. Know what's the most important factor. They're not but but the reality is there's just less people watching Than there were in rio. Do how much if at all do you process that. Think about that or are you or does that just not viewership or the sort of the macro of the games does is that not part of your world at all. I'm always curious. How and on how an on air person sort of processes that kind of stuff. I think he's a part of your world. Because i think anybody wants to know that you'll you're speaking to an audience And obviously we're not totally cut off. I've seen articles. We know that there so many people watching as they were rayo but rio was the same time zone pretty box. That's a big big factor huge factor in that richard. And i remember during the daytime show with al michaels and mike torika in rio and it was amazing because it was so i mean it was the greatest shift of all time. Okay because that's when all sport was so we could bring you the daytime show with all this live coverage and that's different i if i'm lucky i start the show something live and i finished the show something like but on the whole it showing you what you missed when you are a slave and you know we all know everyone has media will. Everyone has access to the internet or someone else's social media. They wanna see what happens in the two hundred meter rice. They can So it's it is a different world in just a short five years and so we were aware of that But i also think the in five years america has moved forward very quickly and television area in the country and the cold thing. I mean we will i. I have a lot of friends who don't have the regular season. I mean they still watch. Nbc very what shipped via youtube tv or hulu or whatever they all have the different offerings. And i don't read how that works in terms of ratings but it's a very very different landscape but one day i would say is older where i'm aware of it. The sense that i get is the olympics hasn't lost its charm has lost its appeal at all. The world is slightly changed around there but the olympics is remained strong. And i think that's been proven actually a few weeks and also the audience is still must've so it doesn't it. Don't really register of than i'm aware of it and it's the same in every country and it's just the world we live in but there is that people are finding ways to watch it just slightly unconventionally rebecca You know as someone who is a product of the bbc and obviously someone who was raised In the uk you grew up with the olympics like being presented by a public broadcast. I don't know the history of this. Has the bbc always add it or has someone else added prior to the bbc in your lifetime. They've always had it. They only the only olympic games that i know of that had to share it. Okay so okay. So you're you grew up on that. I live in toronto right now. So i'm watching the cbc bbc and cbc are very very different. Broadcasters than nbc for one thing they're public broadcasters they are funded either by tax payers or the government and they have a shorter a specific charter to sort of do certain. Things in country nbc. Obviously is very different for profit. Commercial enterprise. i wonder for you as someone who grew up and watch the bbc. Like how did it take you. A while to adjust to nbc's their approach more narrative storytelling less less live olympic coverage because of the the sort of the commercial responsibility. Your old hat. Now so i know. I imagine for this olympics. Big deal but i don't know at first when you join. The olympic team was it. Did you find just the whole philosophy very different given what you grew up with really rich in because i never walked on the olympics the uk. And when i watched the olympics. I was very very much a spectator and because like when i left the bbc i was at the bbc. I wasn't ever popped olympic coverage. Not reagan if voiceovers but nothing really so. I didn't really involve myself in that olympics department which was very very strong mberi kind of closed off and i i was a near it so i didn't really know how they did. The olympics and i never watched the olympics with critical. I just absorbed. I suppose So when i came to nbc. Hottest thing i found was when i started eight years ago on the premier league that would that was difficult because in fact i was having this conversation with somebody at work today because we have a scottish lady who works on our show on nbc. In tokyo into and she was she was just saying about how interesting it is. How many commercials are all. And i said. Well it's interesting. You say that. Because actually that's about the same number who in the uk on a on a sky or tv or a bt sport but they're just more frequent so with the football match in england you have usually a forty five minute break and then the at time and then halftime show for five minutes and then another five minute break and then kickoff will. That's on head off in america to go away for four or five minutes. I mean people would just switch off into. And i would die so we do all these little tiny breaks much more frequently which is just a different approach. That the me a long time to to think. Because i everytime i would come back from a commercial break i would say welcome back and then i realized i was saying. Welcome back about seven hundred dollars a day. Because that's what you doing. would you say. Welcome back because people generally have been away for four or five minutes so that side of things. When i first moved to eight years ago. yes. I did..

"Right as i said at the top it is rebecca lowe. Live the live to tape. Obviously from tokyo kind enough to do this very early in the morning until you're so good morning robot. It's like the today show good morning. Well it's not. It's like the nut used to me and good evening in my head. Richard it. It is seventy nearly in the morning here but i am dumpster today. I have done my show. And i am going to bed very sued. Nice all right. So i think you know I think people will be interested in sort of what your dazzling can you give us just a sense of your day from when you wake up to ultimately when you When you hit the sack yeah cool so notice me to be the alive during the day on. Daytime for nbc. That means the night shift here so on upon landing in tokyo i decided to try to stay on the night shift. From the moment i landed. Major era did not work every was a disaster but it was a real hodgepodge of may just trying to stay awake and trying to get the body adjusted but it. It was not good anyway by. That's all matt. She started the show. i really was driving on a severe lack of sleep. So what now. I'm okay but what happens. Is i go into work for a weekday show at about eight pm Calving woken up. Ideally three pm four pm time between sort of four and seven. I find out who interviewing that night and do my pratt. Do my structure line to be welcomed questions. Accenture redouble things for showing that night make sure relatively across many of them as i can Just in case. I need to suddenly aglet about question jumping And then i go into a heroin. Makeup eight o'clock ten o'clock. We recall the interview. Ten thirty with whichever athlete when enough to get that day and then is downtime for a couple of hours and then i go live on air. Japan's on at one. Am and six am. When i come off hotel breakfast and bed and do the whole thing the next day and then the weekends is longer. The weekends is a ten hour. Live show so we actually go on air at nine pm. Denny's time come up seven. Am japanese time. So i go into work at about five. Pm on sunday And go finish seven. Pm the next day and of course every single day. and i think it's i think including russell's it's about twenty night shifts on the sandwich which i'm quite proud to the on. That's nice congrats So i d for for the olympics. That i covered and again. I haven't the last one. I card was so chiesa. It's very possible. Things have changed. I wouldn't think dramatically one of the things about nbc setup at the international broadcasting center. I guess it was called Was that it was massive. I mean essentially. Nbc was foreign away the biggest broadcaster. They're they almost essentially had their own. I don't even ask. I'm not even sure what the you know. Almost like their own stadium. Basically although that's probably not the right setup but it was. I mean it was massive. There were many many studios. It was almost like its own little city. What is the setup for nbc in tokyo. If you can describe it. I think is very similar to that. The is i only cans at the weekend during the week. I'm actually at a at a studio hotel by tokyo bay Which is a studio that we have used it. It's an amazing studio it's gone from. I think it's gone for so cheap to rio. Two pm chang to hear Sort of big blue box divided into a number of studios and we have one in this during the week Literally just across the road. But you're right. The national bureau center centers unlike anything that is seen in my life so she was my first olympic games. And when i turned up i didn't realize there was anybody else covering the games i just saw the fcc olympic games. I mean i could find lots of friends at the bbc Find where enough they were. Because most of the idc is is nbc. It gives me a headache. Richard to try to work out the logistics of this undertaking. This is big this year than ever Which have to say teyat software. Nbc considering all the challenges of hats to face but the logistics and the unpacking and the building state of studios and the organization of of people. And you know it really blows my mind. So the i b c has many many studios could tell you how many most of which are lots of which ram be say plus office after the office of the office production room meeting room restaurant. I mean the whole thing is. I had a friend of mine from the bbc. The other day. And i said to. I'm so sore. But can you come to me. Because i know anywhere else other than nbc. So she said well that's okay. I know exactly what they're everywhere. So i'll find you. We'll say In london it was not hard to find the bbc. I'll tell you that is as a press person back then for sports illustrated. But yeah nbc. It's a minutes unlike anything i've ever seen. You're right what Obviously the protocols heading into the country you obviously had to take a cova test bob. I'm sure had to be vaccinated etc. What what protocols exist for you as an nbc broadcaster in country. What if what if anything if you had to do have to be vaccinated. I am vaccinated. Oh interesting okay. Anybody else to do. I think it was made clear which is fair enough. life might be easier if vaccinated but it wasn't a wasn't mandate So yes to coca tests before he left on upon landing. I'm sure many people heard these stories. Lots of time spent the airport with tests embarrassed things and then the day today the first fourteen days you put you have an app on your phone and you put your temperature in feeling every day and that has to be something you do. Every day a day one day to day three day ten day..
What Is OlympicTok?
"The twenty twenty olympics. Haven't exactly been easy to watch. Yes they are taking place in twenty twenty one during a once in a century pandemic. But what i mean is that it's actually difficult to watch the events and festivities on tv despite. Nbc holding the exclusive broadcasting rights. Finding out where to watch the olympics is confusing as heck as things are spread out over several cable and streaming channels and then without fans there to post videos and photos of the games. It kind of feels like we're missing out but there is one really good place to find. Those highlight videos not to mention excited reactions from coaches fans and the athletes themselves and that place is having already did that. They get here to tell us about. Olympic talk is boxes rebecca jennings. Hey rebecca. tell me about talk in the olympics. What's happening on the app right now. So this is the first olympics. Where tech talk has existed. And i think what we're seeing the same thing that we see from like celebrities who get on social media and then we sort of start to put a face to the name and everything and we feel like we know them. The same thing is happening for athletes on talk and so they are making videos of behind the scenes at the olympic village. Here he wrote me other testing out those beds which is really funny. She's doing yoga. Oh they're making like thirst videos for their fellow athletes It's just like a lot of fun kind of you. See them less as athletes and more as people who are just like their regular young people and it's just like a really joyous thing to behold so let's talk about numbers. How big are the olympics on talk so the olympics are huge on tech. Talk like when. I opened the app. When i scroll a few times. It's like every maybe fifth or sixth video as olympics related. And that's from whether it's the athletes themselves or it's you know nbc's sports coverage where they just do you know cool highlight moments or whatever or it's just fans watching their favorite sport so there's a lot on it Some athletes have you know built followings of hundreds of thousands already in just like the span of a couple of weeks even athletes who had just gone on just prior to the olympics. And then you see. Olympic talk is one of the biggest hashtags. There's like hundreds of millions of us there and with all the olympics hashtag combined. It's like at least a billion views you know. Maybe probably more.
Nastia Liukin on How to Win (and Lose) at Work
"Hey everyone our guest. Today is not stale lucan. She has gymnastics legend who won five olympic medals in the two thousand eight olympics in beijing including the gold medal. For all around to out her gymnastics career. Nastya has also won four world gold medals and thirty two total international medals since retiring after the two thousand twelve olympic trials. Nastya has not slowed down. She's a gymnastics analyst for nbc sports. She's written a book and has competed on dancing with the stars. Nastya welcome to the show. Thanks for having me be before we start talking about work and your career. We like to start these interviews with our lightning round to get warmed up so quick questions. Quick answers here we go. Are you ready yes. I feel weird like an athlete like are ready to. What was your first job on your resume. It was when i was twelve. I guess basically. Because i shot a commercial for adidas and didn't really know it at the time obviously i got paid for it but at twelve years old. You know my parents took care of all that and yeah little. Did i know that led me to my career today. What is the most recent job on your resume. I guess being broadcaster for nbc. Just got back from the olympic trials. And i'm heading to tokyo in like two weeks so exciting i know. Do you have any hobbies or skills that people don't know about. No i think like all of my talent and everything went to gymnastics now when you think about it not when you were at the height of gymnastics but now vault bars beamer floor. What's your favorite bars. mine to. What is something that most people don't realize about competing in the olympics. I was telling somebody this yesterday. But it's like we don't have an off season so not to compare it to like any other sport of professional sports. But we're still training seven hours a day six days a week in our quote unquote like off season and then non-olympic years competing at world championships national championships. So i think they don't realize how many years i get your entire life. You're basically trading for this moment and that also like speaking of training we get to the olympics like two or so weeks before the competition started. Just to get acclimated time change like all of that and we don't get a single day off until the competitions over so it's a lot it's exhausting. We don't get to see our families.

"Aaron rodgers. Flyer there more than that. It's a little more to it than that. This is the most complete roster outside the quarterback position in the conference. I mean division. I would say in the division most complete roster and i i am. Some ideas needed to find some way somehow to kind of have a more clear angle of attack on kansas city. Being sort of auto crowned if west champion the denver broncos to me at least Have a very strong offensive line. Incredible weapons in the passing game. And you know a pretty clear. Top ten defense from a personal standpoint Particularly their past defense which they upgraded this last off season and they. They've really the way that the these lines have been made the way they're power rated. The way their win total is lined is expecting. The drew lock is the thirty second best quarterback in nfl. Like you would have to be that low for them to any of this to make sense and i. I guess having learned a hard lesson being josh allen doubter. i'm a like a little bit more willing to kind of allow for the idea that drew lock in somehow improve his accuracy over the course of one season on top of the fact that He was working with You know jordan palmer. He was working with josh allen. He specifically identified what the biggest weakness in his game is and you have heard some somewhat positive reports coming out of camp. That don't sound like nonsense. Like people were generally going into this. You know the the minicamp expecting up. I think teddy bridgewater is probably going to be the starter and they came out and they're like wow drew block was surprisingly good and i guess i'm willing to take a fire at a price like five to one or better on this broncos team just to capture the twenty percent chance that drew lock. Is this year's josh allen and he'd truly did transform his game in some way specifically is ability to throw accurate passes. Jerry judy likely performs a lot better. This season in a vacuum. Just because it's the second year and he's young receiver portland sutton coming back is being forgotten about as a legitimate wide receiver. One in the nfl. And he's got an outstanding tight end to go to noah fan also so the pieces are kind of all. They're in place for sort of a josh allen. Twenty twenty rucks for drew lock And if it turns out that he really is not a not a cal. Nfl caliber starting quarterback than five to one is the worst fire in the world. Anyway stephen think well if lock is a no show again. I mean bridgewater at my twenty four best quarterback so certainly denver would go with them if lock was than five percent chance they get rogers and then that becomes really personally a unique kansas city to win less eleven games to win this bet. I'd rather spec kansas city on an alternative towboat. You're gonna fake. Ac go at cirque. I think get under eleven plus to ten. So i would rather do that. Because if can't send winston games they're still gonna be a pretty big favorite to beat denver in that division. So and it's possible. It's possible with the coach. The chargers could suddenly win twelve games. Also so. I think the way get at is the alternative total on casey under checkout at whale underscore capper on social media. You can tell. Drew's an absolute stud would love to have him on the show again. I listen. I do well on nfl. Betting i don't know how because i could just listen to these back and forth on the numbers all day so impressive other naked like everybody.

"Wasn't going to ask you this because we mainly talk. Nfl here do you do really well. I mean stephen. I talk all the time about how well we do on. The nfl draft is the nba draft. Kind of the same thing like are you. Are you heavy ended betting the nba draft and as easy to do well on the nba draft as is on the nfl draft or no not there they might as well be two totally different handicaps. It's crazy to me because the nba draft. It's it's somewhat sudden. There's not as much information sharing and there is not consensus among the teams in clubs. Really as far as who deserves to be a lottery. Pick and Preferences so much more Diverse filling need is so much so much more difficult to pinpoint in the nba. And the nfl nfl. You're starting already with some knowledge. Philadelphia is going to try to address their needs at wide receiver. and cornerback. Like you are already looking at a narrow pool of whom they may take any given position right similarly cincinnati. They need a line. They need wide receiver. Like there's only two players that could possibly dick but the nba. It's it is so much more a matter of preference in the information is a little bit tighter for whatever reason I think there's enough people in sort of the nfl draft Information marketplace that. They can get more of it out there. You know they extract more. There's you know. You see mock drafts. In starting february they go all the way through the draft. You know and they continued to kind of improve the discourse around it and so i feel like the. Nfl draft is one of my more profitable weeks of the year every year and the nba draft. If i come out with a winning weekend it's because i happened to get a note from somebody who's close to the celtics and was like hey they are especially high on this guy. They're not gonna let him go pass them and he happens to be. You know that that right draft number. So it's it's more..

"We've talked about this last couple of weeks. You are not as high on the browns at some of our guests appear to be loved the the browns roster. I agree with everything through saying about improvement. I will say that. The one problem with betting team mike brown's and i know it's july and we're still two months away but season was ten. You had ten out there you should of you should had nothing has changed. Everything's identical to what it was a few months ago. So we're missing out on the best number. That means you're missing out like forty five cents a value. It doesn't mean it's not a good bet however there's a lot about cleveland say this druids given you implied bet with his analysis. Because i would say the number one reason that he likes cleveland is the roster but the number two reason he's identified a tremendous spot the second game against baltimore. For god's sakes going bet the game of the year in late one ad cleveland hosting baltimore right now because over the next six months. Everyone listens to the whale capper. He's begged and that is going to be identified. People that big red circle. That's going to be my game of the year and so that lines gonna get inflated because the story is so damn good bet it now before anyone else. It lay the two and a half at the west gate game of the year at some other spots right now. I love that interesting. Drew last week. dan bach from wrote. Grinders gave us the argument for the bucks to be under eleven and a half wins. You like the bucks to win the nfc plus three hundred. So you're on the totally opposite end of that spectrum. Yeah and again this. This goes much more into the philosophy. That i was laying out before which is like get ahead of the market. Move on the number right. The bucks started off the season in with a very very favorable You know kind of soft landing. I guess is the right way to say it day obviously get dallas at home. Banner night you get extended rest before you gotta play atlanta and then a handful of games where you have some young coaches new quarterbacks the at miami on here you got philly on here. You got chicago on here. You got england on here. You know that you could potentially face a first or second year quarterback Four weeks in a row from week. Five two week seven and if you saw tampa bay defence did to pat moms. You don't think they're licking their chops to play a quarterback who's kind of taken his first steps in the nfl. You're crazy so i it's again. It's it's kind of the perfect storm. Here where tampa has sort of a nice I seven weeks to their schedule and can get off to a six one seven zero type of start and because of what they did last year winning super bowl because they're sort of an anchoring that they you know tom brady can do it again. You know there's enough narrative there that i think you're gonna see the market react relatively quickly. It does go well for them. And then the flip side of that is true for basically everyone else in the nfc like after you go by tampa bay like my next power rated team in the nfc is the rams and they are like seven eight ish range so there is a pretty decent gap here and i can not just looking at the ranch schedule looking at some of the other..

"Now behind a very very capable head coach against You have another year progression for For baker mayfield now with odell beckham junior coming back off of injury. A very solid running game which means you can gain the leads bypassing and you can put away the leads on the back of your strong rushing attack in your your absolute Unit of an offensive line. And then this defense is not your two thousand twenty cleveland browns defense they have made upgrades at every level of the defense in my opinion You've got your david and cloudy now to kind of provide a little bit of a spell from myles garrett getting double teamed on the defensive line and your secondary's wildly improved. They stole a couple of very very good players in free agency to complement us. Some players like denzel ward. Who i think are pretty capable in the secondary. So i think you're talking about a defense that has a pretty clear potential to be top ten. An offense in an offensive coach offense scheme that To me looks like a top ten itself. Back cleveland. to me is is pretty clearly in the same conversation as kansas city as among the best in the afc And lining them as a plus three and a half power number. Ten ten and a half win team is giving them a little bit of short change. So you like. I mean i'm looking at your note to me. You like the over. You like them to win the afc north at plus money one forty five. And even you got some win the afc a plus nine hundred. Yeah and obviously those are correlated is for sure there's some there's some correlation here at if it goes sideways all these go sideways so while i'll own that at the top here but they start the season playing against kansas city. So you kind of have your most important game. In terms of shortening these prices happening week one And that is. I think a very interesting spot because if you can come out and surprise kim city week one all the sudden nine to one to win the. Afc is not going to be there anymore. That's gonna get short real quickly and you know whoever has note from last year whoever can get the inside track to the the only by in the afc is going to have a huge advantage this year because the afc is stacked and if that happens to be cleveland because they can get a head to head win against kansas city and then Obviously have those kind of too nice spots against baltimore. Which is their their other two toughest games on their schedule than i think. They can They're going to be the surprise surprise in the afc this year so Some correlation there but again you know if you're if you're shopping futures price market. You're looking for optimal entry right. You want better number. That is going to get shorter between now. And when the you know the business end of the playoffs get here and for me. Cleveland is the no brainer in that regard because after that After that Kansas city game Things get downright favorable for them You have houston chicago. Minnesota chargers arizona denver. Pittsburgh all three enroll at home So you could enter sort of week nine of the season. And if you've got that casey win in your pocket you're talking about seven and one eight. No type team steve..

"You're new england under nine and a half at plus one hundred. Tell me about. Yeah not in love with this. Roster this is a six seven win roster by my calculations and i'll give belichick maybe an extra win on top of that. Just because i have that much respect for them but nine to nine and a half as heavy ask and i don't. It's tough for me to really point beyond the quarterback situation and say that there is a vision or how to run this offense that can compete with the best of the Of the nfl. Nowadays in don't one of the clear arcs over. The last. Preseason off season Was sort of this imbalance of power. Here right the. Afc is just continuing to get better. And all of the good quarterback play is consolidating in the afc and the patriots are going to have to go through all a lot of these teams Obviously the key you know the the team to beat now in the afc east as the buffalo bills. They got better this off season. It's tough for me to point anything That happened with their coaching in their personnel. That would be a downgrade from their their their metrics from last year. And you know the the patriots really Are built away. That may have one football games in the two thousand twenty tens. Maybe but for today's nfl. If you don't have the ability to pass your way back into the game if you are down more than a score then. I don't know that you're compiling winds so the patriots are probably the one team that i think is probably the most mis-priced across the board right now and I don't mind still betting Hammering away at their season win. Total under steve. I think there's an opportunity with the patriots and drew of course is shopping and he's finding very best line the other night and even money good for him and that certainly is out there. What's happened with the patriots. There's a narrative out the quarterback play can't get worse. Never mind that. The quarterback play lousy. They solve the problem by picking up skill position players and they had all these guys adapted out for cova. They're coming back so they're gonna be better. I agree with all that. They're still going to be better. It doesn't mean they're going to win an games. However so i absolutely agree with through and i do think like a lot of other teams people liked about overs in the nfl. Especially when there's narratives that teams are going to be good and there is that narrative out there in bella. Check is the genius and because of that. I think this is one if you wait until ten minutes before the. Nfl season kicks off. You probably going to get your best number new england to go on. I kind of feel like if i was a genius. I wouldn't have alienated the greatest quarterback of all time. But i probably wouldn't have done that. He probably should have put his genius hat on before that conversation. let's get.

Maybe i think i'll have baby hundred twentyish bets over the course of nfl season. Where i could do that in a month and tennis easily. Interesting steve. what do you think of that. You know one aspect of tennis. And i i went disclose. It's one of the sports. I very rarely get involved with but live betting thing about the nba finals. Janas comes down wrong his need. Oh immediately all the live winds off the board or can't play. We got to evaluate. What's going on. I can only imagine an hamburg. You could literally have someone blow out there hamstring and there's probably a good five minute delays there hobbling around the court to make the proper just because nobody is watching those sports. So you jet for those who are live betting if nothing else just sharing injuries have you found that true. Yeah but it's gotten people have gotten good at that. I don't think that's the secret. There's a there. I guess i maybe in the context of a wimbledon or french opener. Us open. you're never going to be for. I two that information but and some of these smaller tournaments you might But current is on current form. It's even someone who's handicapping daily. I'm not getting is on every single player. Oh it's taken him off of his service timing now he's double-faulting the picking up. The small stuff like that is huge. And and to your point. I think there are people worldwide who probably their career is literally live trading tennis buying low and selling high at at key High leverage moments of the match. You can you can arbitrage some pretty spectacular edges that way steve. We've been doing this show for like six years seven years. Maybe i don't know that you've ever mentioned tennis before. Have we ever talked about tennis. And it's just a matter of you can't do all sports at once. I always spoke about specialization. And frankly malul embarrassed because kevin is extremely profitable. I'll open up with a wide brush. Question that may have a wide brush answer or you may want to get a fine brush and paint with it. How would you describe the state of the women's game today. Yeah yeah. I mean it's kinda wild because it feels like so much has happened in the past couple of years since the whol folded To ago now but it also feels like there hasn't been that much like a meaningful progress. So it's so tricky because like now the twa. Pa is a thing and they got on national tv and whol is going to be on national tv for the first time in these are steps towards progress. but what are they. moving towards. exactly like the p. w. h. p. a. always brings up the nhl and kind of standard them into those conversations as we all know the nhl has had several times. It's not happening right now is happening while the whol is air. They've moved the goal posts a couple of times back when it was whol whol with always. Oh when there's only one league there was one we league and twa came in so lots always happening. But it's never really like any actual meaningful progress. It feels like so that can be Kind of frustrating just from the perspective of someone Who follows a lot of women's hoffy. Obviously and wants to see some meaningful progress ear. It just feels like we don't know where it's actually going. The nwa is growing. The nwa tell is expanding but this players have been shown any more interested into any at any point. Trey Mancini's Struggle and Strength
"Sedan baseball fans. Probably know trae mancini as this really good power hitter on a not so good team but can you give us a quick snapshot of his career before he broke out under the scene in major league baseball. Yeah he was never thought to be the guy so he had to keep working every single level to prove himself. He started out in high school in florida. was when a really good team there but he was the first baseman he was right handed hitter and so he didn't get a whole lot of looks. His name and number is up at his high school. You own the big placard but the numbers wrong. It's actually number eighteen instead of number sixteen which is number there. That's kind of almost indicative of the things that he is going through that he's always been kind there but there's always been a player on his team or something and he's always been kinda overshadowed basically. He went from rung to rung to wrong in the minor league. Ladder finally made his debut in september of twenty sixteen and basically exploded those first few games that one in the air left-center field has dave sadegh first major league at his mom beth getting your round the basis faster than anyone this year. Who is in a home run and then in two thousand seventeen was fantastic and ended up being third-place rookie of the year behind. Aaron judge andrew benintendi in the american league. And just how good was he during the twenty nineteen season. Oh he was by far the best player. Understand you thirty five home runs. You really broke out. Towering fly ball left center field. Hit hard by trae man's cd way back in the wall. Hey goodbye homerun. He should have been there all star but when your team is bad as your only get one all star pick and john means was having a good season for the orioles as well so they went with a picture instead of manzini but he was absolutely breakout. Star back goes that god does get on the board. O est back cd hot getting four point seven five million so a huge jump and he is poised to be one of the better younger players in the american league so heading into the twenty twenty season. It sounds like his baseball career really his life. Were just in a great place. Oh yeah it was going exceptionally well for him in pretty much every aspect of his life including he started dating a woman who had been one of the on field reporters for the orioles. Forget this you home runs for infield heads for you. What's on the difference maker up to this point last year honesty. If you'd sarah perlman she's now works for nbc sports. She had left the orioles in july. What does it mean to close out. Games like doesn't get the w. carnival. Not exactly how he drew it up towards the end there but and that was going really well at the beginning of a new relationship he just become a millionaire for the first time. Everything was going perfect for him. Going into two thousand twenty and dan walk us through what happened in march of twenty twenty so like all baseball players. They get their annual physical when they get to the spring training camp and he did his regular physical bloodwork everything else and then around march. I the athletic trainer came to him and said. Hey your blood's a little wonky like your iron levels are pretty much low you all the way throughout and basically you saying you know. I don't want to scare you. But i think you're having some sort of internal bleed that's causing. It could be stomach older. It could be healy activities. Or you know there. An can't that I remember them. Asking if i had a family history of colon cancer and i said yeah my dad had obviously they did some more tests and they decided you know what we need to get your co nas copy. Because things don't look right. They had the colonoscopy and they told me found a major mass in his colon

"nbc sports" Discussed on Terrific Talk with Tom Anderson
"The only thing you could do is kind of continue to prove yourself and hopefully, you know at some point you're the one who's making the big creative decisions. It sounds like that's something you want to do what County Career aspirations? Well, you know, it's it's kind of tough, I guess to project sometimes cuz the industry is always changing you might be chasing a job that doesn't exist and five years and I've kind of learned that you gotta need sort of need to adapt as you go but I think the the shows that Dan lebatard does off both his radio show and his T show something like that where it's like you cover sports but you know, you're reminding your your mind at all the time that it's supposed to be fun and they come up with creative and fun ways to cover the sports that everyone else is covering and you know more by-the-book ways and I really respect the fact that they're always willing to try new things. So I would love to do more TV and birth Do I guess more, you know creative and and modern formats in terms of covering Sports because I feel like that could ultimately get my strengths you think honor something you'd rather do than writing per se more interested in that. I don't think I'd ever want to fully give up writing cuz I really like, you know sitting down especially when I have like a walk-in opinion. I feel strongly about you know, there's something about making a case in written form and you can just reach such a a wider audience really if you think about it because of how quickly you can read something as opposed to watching an ad and watching a video or sitting down and watching TV so I do like to write but I think I'd like to be mostly on there and TV and radio at some point right now. I would say probably seventy 80% writing, you know, maybe if that could be flipped. That would be cool. So you've been in Washington for a job Years now just talk about your journey and climbing and there are times where you thought maybe this isn't the career for me, you know, the highs and lows could talk about that a little yeah definitely wrong size and Loaves along the way and you know, a lot of lessons I've learned patience is really important. You're not going to get everything right when you want it. Sometimes it might happen a year or two months or years later than you wanted or felt like you deserved it. But as long you continue to work hard and treat people the right way things will take care of themselves, you know, like the the Cleveland basketball now trust the process like I think that applies to everything in life, you know, if you're putting in the work and not cutting corners and treating people the way you want to be treated I think things will pay off. So I've had some lows there's been many times, you know where I felt like I should be further along in my career or you know, I had a bad interaction with someone out. Field, you know a player or co-worker or something like that or you know, I felt like, you know, people are getting chosen over me for things where you know, maybe my resume I felt like was better. But what I've also found is that oftentimes the high the biggest highs come unexpectedly and you just kind of have to trust that they'll they'll come along as long you work hard, you know, you can count on Locust people say and sometimes when I've been at my lowest moments, you know in terms of you know, how I feel about the job. I'm in something comes around the corner, you know a few months later. So I've kind of tried to take that lesson to heart not focus too much on the big picture focus on the task at hand and and take advantage of opportunities when they present themselves, but the same size, you know, specifically I would say like cover in the world series with the Nationals in the World Series last year and that whole playoff run. I also got to be an extra in Sharknado. So that was cool Sharknado 3. Oh really? They were yeah, they were filming them filming the movie at our office and I got to be an extra nice. So that was definitely that was definitely a highlight and then I've gotten to go to MLB All-Star games and to NBA All-Star games and those are just cool events, you know, seeing the dunk contest in person and stuff like that got a Sharknado. So you're an extra what was like the scene that you were a part of wage. It's toward the end of the movie. So, it's Sharknado 3. I don't know how many they've made so far probably over 10 at this point, but the story is so I showed up at work. I was working just a morning shift of desk and they were there to film because they needed something that looked like a NASA control room. So we had our TV control room where the director sit and they you know, have all the camera feeds and things like that and basically under the Comcast umbrella the Sci-Fi channel. Basically, this is the backstory Sci-Fi channel and NBC Sports Washington on the same company, right so they were in and they were filming there in the whole school. Was we were NASA technicians, like helping to save the world remotely, you know, like you're watching sort of the things on screen. So I was in a I was in a scene with Brian Mitchell former NFL player who should be in the Hall of Fame by the way is best kick return one of the skipper turns of all time Ryan Kerrigan who's an outside linebacker for Washington right now. That's Washington football club. And also Anthony Weiner who was famous Congressman had some scandals. You should know him. Well the New York area go look him up if you don't know him. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, so I had like some small talk with him before the scene. Like I think he if I recall correctly like loves the New York Mets so long as it was just a bizarre day, but one always remember, it's incredible. What do you think about the Washington, you know football club you have any suggestions for the team name? What are you leaning towards? I like red wolves, you know, I want them to I think most importantly right now. I'm I grew up in this area and I'm a fan of the team I've ever covered them. So I've been able to maintain that so as a fan, I think the most important thing to me now is that they keep the colors the burgundy a goal is such a unique brand for them and people said well, you know change of colors to red white and blue there's already five NFL teams with red white and blue, including the New York Giants who are their Rivals. So I want them to keep the colors. So a secondary concern for me at this point is the name, but I like red wolves. There's a lot to like about it. If you keep our faith, then you can keep HTTR you can keep some of the logos you can keep the fight song and also just there be a cool story about behind Red Wolves a foreign player their of their spread smooth is basically getting credit for coming up with it. And it's also an endangered species that used to inhabit the DC area and now there's only like 40 of them in the wild and they're all in North Carolina. So I think get home. You if you called yourself the red wolves maybe it would raise some awareness and maybe those animals would start populating and Virginia and Maryland and back where they used to live. And I think that'd be a really cool story. But if you know, if that they were able to turn a name that obviously had a lot of controversy involved it into something good Washington Red Wolves. All right, we'll look out for that. You mention got to cover the the Nationals World Series run last year sixty Game season about to kick off this week opening up with the Yankees. What are your expectations for the Nats this year? You know, I think normally is just so hard for teams who won the World Series to repeat, you know, the Yankees the last thing to do it in two thousand and the only team since them to even get back to the World Series after winning. It is the Phillies and 2009. So I think under normal circumstances you'd probably be looking for a letdown type season, but I.
"nbc sports" Discussed on Terrific Talk with Tom Anderson
"Here on the clns media Network. I'm Tom Anderson. Thank you. Thank you for checking out terrific talk this week. I hope you guys are all having a good week. I hope you like last week's podcast with a bit of younger guy Anthony puccio who covers the Brooklyn Nets that was a really fun podcast cuz he was super honest about his kind of situation. Like this guy's got a really big following he broke the Kevin Durant was shutting it down this season news, like he's a legit reporter and on the podcast. He told me he was weeks away from possibly losing his apartment with things are tough right now talk about the struggle and the dreams he's talking about possibly giving up this dream of working in broadcast journalism in the sports field. It's it's crazy and I just want to thank again. Thank Anthony for opening up. So I wanted to keep that theme going this week. I talked with another younger guys name is Chase Hughes. He covers the Washington Wizards in Washington Nationals game. NBC Sports in Washington DC my old stomping grounds. I went to American University down in the city. So School talked to chase the one theme we really hit on this week on terrific talk with him was patience. And that's that's something that a lot of people my age. I'm thirty-two or even younger it's tough to to deal with the patients in this profession. Cuz a lot of the times we get into in this podcast just a minute, you know, you're not going to get everything right when you want it, you know, feel like deserve something you've worked hard to get it and it's just not painting out and people tell you just be patient patient. Everything will work out in the end. But when you're in that moment, it's just extremely difficult. I've been in that situation a lot over the past couple of years. It's it's definitely a struggle but as long you work hard you treat people the right way. Things are going to work out in the end. That's kind of the big takeaway and theme of this podcast and the conversation we're about to have is just how do you when you're in the moment going through these struggles your dad in your life. If you're doubting people around you just saying this is unfair. This terrible. How do you get after it? And how do you continue to push on? I hope you like this week's podcast. If you're not go follow me on Twitter, please you should go do that right now at terrific talk Tom's the handle a terrific Talk podcast is the Instagram handle. Thank you guys. And of course if you can rate review And subscribe to the traffic Talk podcast. We're on Apple iTunes Spotify, wherever you get your podcast terrific talk is there hope you like this week's conversation with Chase Hughes. Let's get to the music and then the conversation here we go. My name is Tom Anderson paak Tom Tom. Tom, Tom. Thanks Jeremy on this is a good chance for me to kind of test app. Test out my my home setup potentially for doing some TV soon. So I'm I set up my lights and everything. So it's a good good test run for me. I love it. So how is Coronavirus in all this quarantine stuff kind of affected your job here a lot. I mean, I haven't been going to practices or games obviously for a while. Everything was on pause you had to really just kind of be creative with the story angles you came up with, you know, there's a lot of like watching old games and sort of writing about things that had happened in the past. But now, you know, I mean, there's there's actual Sports to talk about it's just, you know, doing everything remotely. Yeah, it's nice to be ramping up here. I know you were NBC Sports Washington. I went to school at American University. So I loved the diesel vehicle. Nice. Where are you now? I'm up in Hoboken, New Jersey. I work in New York City. Oh, okay. Cool. Yeah. Yeah, but commuting working from home right now. Are you like Baton Rouge? Love it, you know I grew up around here. I grew up in Virginia and I always kind of like wanted to leave home and but I just realized that it's very different when you're older and you know, twenty one and can go to bars and restaurants and DC. It's very different like area than I understood when I grew up. So are you from New York, New Jersey? Yeah. I'm from New Jersey I kind of did wanted to get away. So I went to did the DC thing and now wage yeah back up here. Nice. You were to the College of Charleston double major political science Communications was getting into this kind of business something you knew wanted to do early on known not at all. You know, I was the sports editor of my high school newspaper. So I had some experience writing sports articles and columns and stuff like that. But I went to college and studied political science the whole goal was to get into politics and and work on campaigns. That's kind of what I wanted to do is sort of run campaigns but in studying it I realized that I didn't want to do that job. Which I think was valuable, you know, I came to learn and I think other people have learned this too. It's like when you do something or study something you learn either whether you want to do it or whether you don't want to do it. I learned that I didn't want to do it. So toward the end. It was like, all right, how do I get into sports? And luckily I was able to what was your first job out of college? Well, luckily. I got an internship with the company. I'm still working for eleven years later NBC Sports Washington used to be CSN Washington and they had redesigned their website soon after I got out of college. So I got the email structure and the name of the boss at the website and sent him an email cold email and happened to be good timing and I got in as an intern and and a lot of different steps along the way of worked my way up, but you know, I had to work multiple jobs when I first got out of school. I was a courier at a real estate company. I got fired from that cuz I put so much attention in time into my sports writing career, but you know, it paid the bills. I think that's like a really important lesson for people just to hear like you were willing to take all those jobs kind of at the beginning and you're also willing to cold call the boss, you know, making them come to you instead of you know, just hoping somehow did you end up in the Stream situation? I think it's good to hear. Yeah. I mean, think that you know, the saying like you miss a thousand percent of the shots you don't take or you know, whatever that Wayne Gretzky quotas that might Scott took on the office famously. That's that's so true. You know, you gotta try and you gotta not be afraid of failure and put yourself out there and also offer far as the multiple jobs thing. I think we would all like the business to be different and certainly it affects who can get into it. It's in certain respects, but you know just about everyone I know I know had to work a second job early on you know, only the very fortunate people who either you know, their parents afforded them and they, you know, they could work an internship for free or something like that or or they somehow were just dead. Using what they did and got a full-time job early, you know, gotta you gotta a lot of people have to you know work a second job. I kind of liken it to you know, if you're trying to make it as a stand-up comedian or like a league baseball player, you know oftentimes a wage is going to be really low and you just gotta really kind of believe in yourself same thing as like an actor, you know, hope that it pays off and in the long run, right? Yeah, definitely a similar Vibe. What would you say your favorite part of your job today? I would say the creative fulfillment, you know, I love sports and getting to go to games and stuff like that and I've met some really cool people and been able to do some really cool things. But I think the creative fulfillment being able to come up with an idea be passionate about an idea relating to a team my cover and being able to you know, it's just that idea either in written form or on TV. That's what I really liked and you know the thing I kind of covet the most in this industry is creative freedom and I'm a long way away towards getting the correct. Freedom that you know other people have but.
