"In live now with storm team forest chuck bell as we work through this Friday and the weekend, the possibility of more storms in our future. Unfortunately, it looks like it's going to be another fairly busy afternoon for thunderstorm chances across the area and nothing on storm team four radar anywhere in the listening area just yet. First storms are still way out across far, western Maryland out towards deep creek Lake. But there will be an ever increasing number of storms as we get into the afternoon, temperatures have already reached the 80s in many spots, 80 in manassas and Arlington already 82 now in prince George's county, 84, down in southern Maryland, the heat index now down at patuxent river naval air station in saint Mary's county, already up to 92. Heat index already up to 93 in Waldorf, so hot and humid. Afternoon highs today will be in the low 90s, heat index will be right around a 100° before the storms get going, storms are most likely to reach the Washington metro area between 5 and 7 p.m. could have storms a little bit sooner than that out west of dulles airport. So stay weather alert the rest of the day, much like yesterday, these storms will be capable of damaging winds and periods of heavy rain and frequent lightning. For the weekend, high temperatures near 90 tomorrow and 92 on Sunday, storm chances are equally high tomorrow as they are today, storm chances do drop a bit for Sunday into Monday, but it will be a hot and humid, couple of days between now and any chance for a cooldown which does not arrive until the middle of next week. I'm storm team four, meteorologist chuck bell for WTO. "Welcome to the airplane geeks podcast. This is episode 710 of the show where we talk aviation. I'm max flight in joining me is David Vander hoof our aviation historian from the American helicopter museum. Hello, everybody, looking forward to a eventful show tonight. Yes, quite. Also, with us is rob Mark. He's a continuing. He's a contributing editor to business and commercial aviation, part of the aviation week group, and he's publisher at jet wine dot com. Would you like to help you through that continuing and contributing and well, I saw you chugging something out of that mug in that kind of make me chuckle and honestly, it was just water. It was just water. Thank you very much for having me back and good evening to everybody. I think we've got a very interesting show tonight. I think so too. I can't wait and also to help us with that is another interesting guy, max trescott, he's host of aviation news talk podcast. He's a national CFI of the year, and he's an expert on learning to fly or purchase a serious aircraft. Hey, hello, great to be here once again. And yes, I have two excited as is everyone else. So let's get started. I can't wait to talk to our guests. All right, well let's do that right away. Our guest this episode is Melissa Gonzalez. Now Melissa is a flight attendant who was a board Miami air flight two 9 three, which crashed in 2019 while landing in Florida. The following year, Miami aired declared bankruptcy and ceased operations, but Melissa has continued on as a flight attendant for corporate gigs. Melissa, welcome to the airplane geeks podcast. Thank you. Thank you guys for having me. How are you guys? We're terrific. And as the others said, we're fascinated to have this conversation because we're going to take this opportunity to learn about something we hope never personally happens to us. And airplane crash. But not only from someone who was there, but someone who was a member of the cabin crew, and so this episode is going to be not so much about the crash itself, but more about the role that Melissa was thrust into in that accident. But let's start with a really brief description of how the flight ended in Melissa, you can correct me if I get anything wrong. But on May 3rd, 2019, Miami air international flight two 9 three. That was a Boeing 737 800. It overran the runway on landing. At naval air station, Jacksonville in Florida, the plane came to rest in the St. John's river. The aircraft was a complete write off and the NTSB concluded that the accident resulted from hydroplaning after heavy rainfall on an ungrooved runway, although there are many other factors at play here. But let's go back to the beginning. Oh good, let's go back to the beginning because here's how we should have started it. You should have said it was a dark and scary night. It did. It was actually. After 9 o'clock at night, it was dark. So Melissa, this was a military charter flight, correct? Correct. Yes. And it was departing from Guantanamo Bay. One Santa will be yes. We had military and military family members on board. Was it a pretty full aircraft? Yes, we had a 143 passengers. Actually, a 136 passengers. It was a 143 together with the crew. And the flight to Florida was there anything special? Was there anything remarkable remarkable about the flight? Well, actually, when we first started the day, we started a Norfolk Virginia and before we took off, we were having issues with the AC. So we had a little delay before the flight. We usually flew with the mechanic on board. So the mechanic was trying to

Well, we'll try to get some updates on that. But anyway, so thank you for mentioning that the NAS I think airshow and ASL. Bridgeport. He is a long drive. That's why he ends up I did not. Oh, I was thinking it was at dolphins air force, but at the cab peach tree. So maybe airport. Oh, okay. Well, we've had a couple of meetups there at the 57th fighter group. Maybe we can use that as a venue possibly. Anyway, I would just throw that out there. Okay. And now speaking of meetups, you don't have, you know, you can have your own meetup out there. You don't have to have one of the APG crew members present to do that. And here is a good example of that from JJ and Paul. Expires. It's JJ from California. I am Liz, but before I do that, I'm going to mention.

In a heavily wooded area paths lead to five separate ammunition bunkers, and the basis littered with dozens of locomotives left rusty on their tracks. There are several aircraft and radar bunkers. Also, it was nineteen forty eight when the base was decommissioned in our story really begins. The two huge hangars were filled with warplanes hanger a contained T. B.. M. A last flight to the Aircraft Cemetery Arizona Robert. smedley was flying a hell diver to San Diego when bad weather said in when he turned back, a group of loggers saw the planes circling under low cloud cover just before the crash, wreckage of the plane was scattered over two hundred yard radius among the wreckage was copy of a Western Union note he'd sent to his wife just days before coming home soon, it said loud Bob People visiting the old base of reported seen. The ghost is probably the spirit of Robert. Smedley, trying to find his way home now travel last six hundred fifty miles. I mentioned to San. Francisco's old hunters point shipyard originally. Originally built on six hundred thirty eight acres of Waterfront. Our story began so the dawn of July first nineteen, forty six, when the able day atomic airburst over tiny Bikini atoll took place over one hundred US military ships surrounded the island of all the vessels. It was light aircraft carrier. US Independence that the government decided to toe into hunters point shipyard intent on finding a way to decontaminate it. They also wanted to determine the potency of the radioactive contamination I. They tried sandblasting. We're left with tons of radioactive sand that had to be packed in of dump some thirty miles off the San Francisco coast next they brought in cats and dogs monitor effects radioactive poisoning on them, then placing the dead contaminated animals into barrels to be dumped into the Pacific. Finally, prisoner volunteers from nearby San Quentin prison were made to clean the ship when they died. You can only guess what happened to their remains. But that's ancient history, the grounds that made up the old shipyard or be decontaminated as soldier real estate investors, one investor reported that when crews were brought out to transient build foundations for his apartment complexes. They stopped short when they approached the side, it was overrun by cats and dogs, and a group of men, wearing vintage prisoner uniforms shuttle days later they were brought in again and found the lots and question deserted. Could the animals have been the spirits of the cats and dogs sacrificed and all those years ago, and what about the group of men were they go? So the volunteers as note of interest the US US independence began to sink before being decontaminated and. And was towed three hundred twenty eight miles out to sea at skull. The FBI broke Apple’s iPhone encryption, but you shouldn’t panic

"Justice Department is still angry at Apple. You probably saw the stories yesterday that had Attorney General William bar announcing that the F. B. I was able to break into the phone of the. What's the word I'm looking for? Who Shot Up Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida? Killing three and wounding eight. According to a bar evidence on the phone ties this. What's the word I'm looking for to the terrorist group? Al-qaeda mission accomplished right. Well sure but how much easier would have been for the DOJ if apple had you know snuck him in the back way that had bar saying thanks to the great work of the FBI and no thanks to apple? We were able to unlock the individuals phones. The bottom line national security cannot remain in the hands of big corporations who but dollars over lawful access and public safety. The time has come for a legislative solution. The piece from the verge had bar saying Apple's decision has dangerous consequences for the public safety and the national security and is in my judgment unacceptable. Apples desire to provide privacy for its customers is understandable but not at all costs. There is no reason why companies like apple cannot design their consumer products and APPs to allow for court authorized access by law enforcement while maintaining very high standards of data security striking. This balance should not be left to corporate boardrooms in Grip Palooza Twenty Sixteen Magadan Gate. The twenty twenty addition. This is something the DOJ has wanted for years going so far as to sue apple back in two thousand sixteen when the FBI was having trouble breaking into iphone. Used by those. What's the word I'm looking for craven? Cowards who shot up an office in San Bernardino in late twenty fifteen eventually the FBI found a way N and they did this time too but you know had to work for it or spend money on it. Maybe the piece from Apple and CIDER on the issue points out that Rhodium which buys bats and sells exploits to law enforcement and other officials announced last week that it was done buying IOS exploits for a while because it has too many of them. But there Oughta be a law in the opinion of the Department of Justice that makes breaking into iphones like yours. Mine and everyone else's easier not everybody agrees quoting the C net piece tech companies including facebook and Google have argued that the same protection keeps millions of people safe from hackers and criminals and shield political dissidents and oppressive countries experts on encryption of also pointed out that if companies oblige and create lawful access that can only be used in criminal investigations. It would create a vulnerability that hackers could potentially exploit. Sounds like the same soup warmed over to the American civil liberties. Union and Gadget Had A. C. L. U. Senior Staff Attorney Brett Max Kaufmann responding to the comment saying every time there's a traumatic event requiring investigation into digital devices. The Justice Department loudly claims claims. It needs back doors to encryption and then quietly announces and actually found a way to access information without threatening the security and privacy of the entire world. The boy who cried. Wolf has nothing on the Agency. They cried encryption. Of course having been called out specifically apple took umbrage at the DOJ's portrayal was probably the part when G. Bar said no thanks to apple apple insider had apple responding to the DOJ's characterization after expressing in no uncertain terms how devastating and heinous last December's terrorist attack was apple pointed out that it began helping the FBI that day. According to the company statement we provided every piece of information available to US including cloud backups account information and transactional data for multiple accounts and we lent continuous and ongoing technical and investigative support to FBI offices in Jacksonville Pensacola and New York. Over the months. Since on this and many thousands of other cases we continue to work around the clock with the FBI and other investigators who keep Americans safe and bring criminals to justice as a proud American company apple continued. We consider supporting law enforcement. Important work our responsibility. The false claims made about our company or an excuse to weaken encryption and other security measures that protect millions of users and our national security. It is because we take our responsibility to national security so seriously that we do not believe in the creation of a back door one which will make every device vulnerable to bad actors who threaten our national security and the data security our customers. There is no such thing as a back door. Just for the good guy says apple and the American people do not have to choose between weakening encryption and effective investigations.
