The this is the thirty th anniversary this year. Yeah that's hard. I mean it's like. I mean if you were an x force i mean. "Even some cares money to light up one of its powers in one of the areas where we have the lease up or at least available broadband. So we're we're always only incrementally solving the problem because it is such an expensive problem and the federal and state politicians. You know. they'll they'll how how much money they're throwing it the problem but what they don't tell is the actual result and our experience that the grants are very competitive. And it's binary you win or you lose you have to wait a year And you don't have a better solution and there's not county funding Is that a substantial enough to go after a bigger project. So you're at the mercy of the grants that are available and you know if you're a county of ten thousand with the broadband authority that has you know. Seven hundred and fifty dollars a month to pay the two positions the executive director and the secretary treasurer. You know. we're not in a position to go write grants Very effectively when we're competing with arlington and alexandria Who probably have less dire need. Just based on the socioeconomic some demographics and the fact that they're all tight cluster. Probably large already served. So you know. The problem remains and the politicians continue to how how much money they're pulling down. But if you actually look at where the federal money is going to. Our representatives in the first district of our county wanted to places like montana and and native american reserves in the west It's not drafting in our own representatives district and when you try to talk about with with our representative you know. You're lucky to talk to his secretary secretary and sort of passed on but yet you see another press release and another press releases about all these doing broadband in the first district. So it's a madman like you know needlestick we've had a lot of success leveraging our size And.

Who has her back to me is I can now make out the thing light coming tiny towards sure of whole screen, but they're faster than me. He one jump. They reached my bedroom door and with another Joe. They're out through the fire door. Grandma bits a table and run out of my bedroom I along. My flat door is spent directly to the Security Office of black away in my pajamas and bare feet. I talked to the security guard on duty. Who Doesn't believe me? Through the fire, door, you say. But the alarm go off! I still make him come back to when check. Have you explained the fire door being locked and I know I bought my vision door. and. One exited. The building didn't mean that the person was still within it. From that point on, and until the end of the year I did not sleep without my phone. And I push my targets. My bedroom door to prevent anyone opening it. I also learned till nosy clam meets. It meant that I wasn't alone. I never found out who was. On My flatmates thought that he was a previous student with a double. The flag piece, looking for routes in what they thought was an empty building. and. They also joked that maybe he was a secret admirer. Had come to observe me my sleep. Only ever know. Honestly. I guess I prefer not to. This story takes place last April. I was a senior high school. My whole life in the mid West so. I was always eager for spring break. Gwen now would vacation somewhere more interesting. This year is going to organ with my friend Mary. Mary was three years older than me and my best friend Josh. WHO's attending the University of Oregon? She happened to be moving there that we could my spring break, so it was perfect for me to ride along. We set off on our journey on Friday night at ten thirty, pm. I know we're going to leave, but he was nice to get through Chicago in the middle the night to escape traffic. We spend most of Saturday driving flat, boring formerly and. We got to see the Badlands National Park, which was pretty cool, especially after such a boring day. At around eleven at night. We were both exhausted, so we called in book the Hotel in Montana about three hours away. We were starting to answer the section of this part of the country. That was pretty much just a ton of native American. Reserves only turned down a long beat off-road. One other car was on the road, and it was a large white truck that be behind us for a while. Lay Joe on this Oh for a few miles before this car started writing as. We Slow Down Alan Pass and he floored it. Again us being exhausted, we saw this as an opportunity to get our hotel faster and we figured it was a local then we could speed without any trouble, so we spent. Al Road just a few miles per hour less than him and my garb shorter. and. We came to a staff and he turned laugh. which we also happen to be doing? A pulled into a parking lot for a bar. That was just on the corner as we continued, but he didn't park. He just waited and as we passed, he pulled out behind us. Now! Very paranoid person so. Asshole Mary that I thought he was following us but. She reassured me that he probably just didn't want US behind him. Because some people are like that. I agree to. We kept on. Our still nervous but I watch them. Turn off the road and my mom was at ease. The fast forward about a half an hour in Mary starting to show obvious signs of exhaustion, her demeanor, so I offered to drive the rest of the way. She said Okay and then he'd pull off with the next chance. The problem was the Robie. Ron didn't connect with any other rose. They are no driveways or stores or really anything except for wide open plains for miles. She decided to pull off the road to make the switch, but as she started to pull over, abrasive headlights came out of nowhere and look like they were on the back of her car. This guy. Ramos off the road and we almost crashed. We came to a stop and both look at each other like what the fuck was that. But before we could see anything in the car from behind pulled up like fifteen yards ahead of us. and. It was the white truck from before. My heart sank, said Mary. Don't get out of the car. It just keep driving. Do Not Stop. She was obviously wearing out at this point, but wasn't totally convinced that it was all that dangerous. But if she saw I, was scared and. Back on the road. The Guy had must have seen this movie. Drive to. We stopped again and he drove slowly. Amount of quarter mile of the road, and turned off into a patch of trees and killed his head, Lice. I told her that our show. He's following, us. Oh, even driving forever in what were the odds that we encountered each other again? She called Josh so we could get a vote opinion. To assume the worst, and he wasn't there, so hey total said it was probably a coincidence, and we should keep driving and be weary. So, we continue offer another twenty minutes without seeing him. But why we pass another small town. I spotted him. He was sitting at a stop sign on a side road facing the by. We were on with his lights off. We passed by him. He taught his late since are driving again. All right.

"The source making sure everyone contributes to their operations and maintenance fund and they're trained on how to make those repairs habitat for humanity is so good at that they go into the community. They engage the community before. They'll do any work. So so important for that sustainability as credit and that sense of pride to the sense of ownership. People support what they helped create. If they're not involved or not committed. Yeah part one another one at that point if it starts to feel if we did it the other way just like it's not even really the communities probably the mentality of people that's that's your product and you'll come back and fix it but it's not my project it's your project talk to us about how you created some awareness here and then we're going to talk about how people can get involved here some of the projects that you've done that you've engaged other people to do like. I saw a video where people are carrying around thirty bottle of water. Can you talk about that? Yeah so every month well to tobacco. The first sort of experience for most of our students is a school tour so we have speakers travel across the US. Speaking at Middle Schools High Schools Colleges universities to educate students about the water crisis. And then we challenge those students take action and so we then have students start chapters or clubs to fundraise and raise awareness and then to help them do that every month. We have a different campaign with a different activity or actions. Students can do to either raise awareness or funds. So we help create. Those tools is important because sometimes you say go do something. I'm motivated bed. What am I do right absolutely and so those tools exist to help them do that. And so it's things like like you said we have a campaign we call the dirty little secret campaign them dirty little secret. Yes and we we basically dirty. Little secret is four thousand. Kids are dying every day. Yeah but we ought to that. The world's biggest dirty little secret is the fact that they're almost a billion people without clean water. And like how is that? Not a part of every daily conversation. Ever and so what? If a jumbo jet went down it would be the headline of every news broadcast ever but this yet has not a single minute of Sans Airtime nightly and so basically we ask students to carry around a bottle of dirty water with him everywhere. They go for the entire month so literally your desk at School. The Gym the dinner table so people see it and go. What the heck are you doing? Why do you have this nasty bottle of water? And they can say naturally then did you know like. Did you know that this is happening and prompt? Those awareness compensation's so some of them are fundraisers. Some of them are awareness campaigns. We typically alternate every other month so we don't give students fundraising fatigue but they can do all of the fund raising fatigue. I'm so good I put people to fundraising so thank you. Yeah absolutely so yeah. It's amazing but they're they're always meant to be very creative and fun. We all of our celebrity supporters are influencers to help activate their audience and explain to students how they can do it. And so we're releasing a new campaign. Every single month of alternately supports our end goal which. I didn't really talk about when you asked me about it but the campaign for Swaziland. And so so basically two years ago we completed a two-year feasability in. Why'd you choose Swaziland? Swaziland unfortunately is best known for having the single highest density HIV AIDS population of any country in the world. So you're looking at about twenty. Six percent of the entire population was crazy and specifically the age group that I find myself in and most of our students you know eighteen to thirty million upwards of fifty percent one or two people and what is tragic is most people. Don't talk about the relationship between water and HIV and AIDS because it's huge if people live in rural villages or communities and drink from contaminated water sources even if they have access to great medical treatment or intro viral AIDS clinics from other organizations but still drink that dirty water people's immune systems are already so compromised that the disease is in the water. They drink will actually kill them faster than they're aides will so we chose Swaziland? Because it's tiny we can make a huge impact about one point four million people and you know a couple of hundred thousand eight hundred thousand. Don't have safe water. And while it's a huge number about fifty million dollars would give the entire country safe water and so we basically figured out it would cost us about like. I said fifty million dollars and we estimated we could do in the course of ten years so we committed to do what no one has ever done before and given entire country safe water and impact to these two issues at once and hopefully change the face of a nation. What's the cost of a will in Swaziland is about twelve thousand dollars which gives an entire village? A whole community of people safe clean water. It's not just Wasi for the sake of Swaziland Swaziland. So we can take that as an amazing case. Study when we're finished to the UN the current administration other water organizations and say. We can do this here. Why can't we do it everywhere? And so that's really we're aggressively moving towards so there people surprise that yes the your young age that you're taking off such a serious world crises. I don't feel that young anymore but I think the thing is whether it's me or whether it's the students we work with I love. I love shaking up. I don't try to be offensive anyway but I try to like shock people in the best way possible. Because like this issue should be shocking. It should be offensive like it's offensive that we live in a world where this is allowed to happen and so I think the thing is hearkening back to what we said. At the beginning. The expectations that people have on young people sort of going through that motion that cycle of school and job and buying stuff when they see people particularly young people breaking outside of that. They don't know how to respond like they don't know what to say and so. I think it's a huge advantage. Actually a lot of times students will say like why one reach out to this local business. I WANNA get involved in people grow up. I'm afraid like they won't take me seriously I don't have to do and I'm like look understand the thing that you're worried about. We'll be your biggest. Hindrance will absolutely be your greatest asset the fact that you're young absolutely because winning you're articulate and you're intelligent and you are passionate and you know what you're GonNa do and what you're asking support for. They can't help but jump on board because they don't know how to respond when they see and it's not what they expect and so it's amazing when we just released these students who are already intelligent and and passionate and give them the tools to be about it and give them a plan like the people are surprised they don't know what to say and so the best part is we say well then say yes and give us your money and so it's it's amazing who now you been onsite company times. How many trips have you taken up to twenty nine trips? Just to the continent of Africa different amounts each the countries where active in And then I've only I've only been to our Central America projects couple times five six times India once But yeah you're on your way? I think we are going to. Remember v Louise for three weeks. No in through over three. It's but in three weeks for. I think we're going for about a week so quick. One of the Four Seasons Hotel said. So what's what's the cost of night. He's got about seventy five bucks. I'm like seth where waste not that. I can't you know camp out with the best of us but like Oh you're gonNA love it you're GonNa love him. I'M GONNA love it all period end of story important for you to go. You WanNa know why it's important it's important because it's so in my soul in my gut. I keep talking about it. I'm asking for dollars. I'm asking for attention. I'm asking for time. I need to go and show up. I lead by example period end of story. And that's why it's important for me to go few so money can fix this money. Because there's there's some things that money cannot fix deaf. Money can fix this. I mean it's just a numbers game at this point really. It's we know how to end this crisis. Can I say something kind of aggressive? Maybe you know as as in this sort of uniting the beauty industry and where I wanNA take this. The beauty industry makes a lot of money. A Lot. And I'm asking you know clients hairdressers Sh- who make money to give dollars to give this you know and there's GonNa come in time where I WANNA go. After companies who make millions of dollars to save match the money we've earned you know or what if I didn't have to ask and a company said I want to be involved. I want to sponsor you here. Let me because I have a budget and I have to give it somewhere. Let me be involved in what you're doing that is i. Wow I didn't even have to come and say can I? May I please guess what you you're still going to have to shit which is which is just this. I'm coming after you. So what do you say to people because this will come up? Well cool the raising money but it's leaving the US how about if we keep money here in the US. How do you respond to that? So it's I would say this with every ounce of love in my heart and I fully believe in if your if your heart is in the foster care system in the United States or it's in combating homelessness in the United States or any number of education. Absolutely like I would never WanNa take people away from the things that care about but the reality is an intelligent case cannot be made that the water crisis that we are addressing in developing communities. And it's not just Africa it's Southeast Asia. It's up to North America. It's developing communities. There is not a single child in the US who has to die from diarrhea or dysentery cholera. No mother worries United States whether you're living on a native American reserve where there is extreme poverty. But it's not anywhere near what we're dealing with whether it's an Appalachia even are homeless in the US. Have Access to toilets and sings so. No mother worries about having to bury their child from cholera. And so I believe because of a on highly analytical and so i WanNa know where I can make the greatest impact with the resources I have and because water impacts everything in life and because it has the highest return on investment for any charity dollar you give dramatically decreases disease rates upwards of eighty eight.
