"The National Rifle Association is canceling their convention next month in Houston, Texas, Due to Covid 19. In a statement, the NRA says that a spike in cases would have made it impossible for attendees to get the full experience more than 70% of people. 12 and older have now received at least one dose of a covid 19 vaccine in the States most populous county. King County executive Del Constantine says that amounts to more than 1.6 million King County residents with Children heading back to school. One question remains for so many parents. When will younger kids be eligible for covid vaccines? ABC is Mark Remillard joining us on the Cuomo Newsline with an update. A lot of school employees around the country have to be vaccinated. But what's happening with the youngsters mark all the testing is still ongoing. For the most part, visor is expected to submit data to the FDA next month on Testing that they've done in kids ages 5 to 11, which is the next group as they continue to step downward in age. Right now, Pfizer's vaccine is fully approved for anyone 16 and older and it's approved under the emergency use authorization for anyone 12 to 16 Right now, Anyone 12 and older than the U. S could get a vaccine. But so the next age group down is 5 to 11 year old Expect to send data to the FDA on that next month, then ages 2 to 5. So 234 Or They would send that, they said shortly after they submit the data for the 5 to 11 year olds and finally, the last group six months to two year old. They say they would expect to send that to the FDA. The data sometime in October November timeline there beyond that, then it's up to the FDA and the CDC to go through the process of, uh, issuing approval and Recommendations and whatnot, so it could be a little bit, but unfortunately, it doesn't sound like we're going to get anything that quickly as the school year is starting. And in fact, the National Institutes of Health Director Dr Francis Collins said on G M a today that he doesn't expect to see approval for kids until perhaps late this year. And what are some of the holdups? Is it because of their metabolisms and immune systems being so different? Yeah, There's a lot of differences. So, as Dr Francis Collins said today, and we've heard this from other health officials as well as the kids are not just tiny adults. They have the different metabolisms. They have different different composition to their bodies. And so they have to accommodate for those things when they're doing the testing in this, and that's why so forth. For example, one of the first things they've got to do is figure out the correct dosage for kids of a certain age. And then the first thing to do is make sure that it's safe and make sure that that's the safe dose to give Kids at that age, but then also beyond that. If you're giving them a different does What impact does that have on the efficacy? And so, for example, anyone 12 or older in the U. S. That gets a dose of the fighter vaccine, For example, you're actually receiving 30 micrograms for kids 5 to 11. They threw their testing. They determined the dose that they're focusing on right now at 10 micrograms. So you have a lesser dose going into kids who are 5 to 11 years old. Okay, well, what does that do to the advocacy going forward? Are we hearing about how sick younger Children get when they have covid? My four year old granddaughter Got it. She had 101 temperature. We didn't see many other symptoms beyond that. Yeah. So we're seeing cases in which there are kids getting covid 19 at higher rates. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics said last week that the week before that there were 180,000 new covid cases, new pediatric covid cases, and that is a four time increase over what they were seeing. In July. We've seen this very steady ramp upward in pediatric cases of Covid 19, and unfortunately, along with that we have seen kids end up in the hospital and end up with severe illness. It is happening, it seems like it's still perhaps more rare than You know what we're seeing in the adult population, the odds of severe illness but Nevertheless, I think overall, there's the concern about protecting kids with vaccines, certainly, especially if they congregate in school. But also you know they can be vectors. They can get the disease. They can spread the disease. They can take it home with them to family members, people, maybe grandparents, people with health conditions, so all of a sudden the disease continues to spread. There's a lot of reasons why both. There's a lot of focus on getting vaccines available for younger kids. We've seen him give it to people in our family, even people who were vaccinated. A B C s Mark Rimmel are joining us. "Mike biden have one last question for you i have to say i deeply and genuinely appreciate your desire to rise above partisanship and not make this about politics but actually about real solutions but politics is is part of the mix here and i just wonder how much faith you have in elected leaders right now when for example today the president tweeted his support for the national rifle association and the head of the nra you know speaking today saying he believes that the democrats or or or or or people who aren't her conservative republicans don't care about children because they don't want to put a guns in the hands of teachers while they're not looking at the real the real problem they're not looking at the real solution and and and i l est rated a real working solution to the president yesterday and in in the whole idea of prevention and um getting into this before anyone picks up a gun so the solutions were there um and the president says he's listening so we have to hold them accountable to that and we have to see what they want to do this is not about democrats and republicans this is about us working together as a nation to do a better job at making our schools safer not by putting more guns in schools but by training students and teachers how to recognize warning signs and take the next step i know that that's the way forward biden is cofounder of sandy hook promise thank you so much for speaking with us thank you very much will.
