"Yes there's a lot there's a lot of love. Gosh Yeah Too. And like you brought me one of these back I WanNa it was something like the summer peach. Yeah I I think that timeline checks out and they also. That was probably late in their strawberry season. So they have. Strawberry Rhubarb is a popular option for them and then later like in like fall. They have Perr Ginger fritters like all of it. I'm on all of it right like right now. I literally just go. You know what we're going to have to find a way to get back to New Mexico in the next couple. I missed that and reminiscing about. It is not helping when we're not there. No it's not helpful at all and then and other place that I loved was Santa has a great. They have a very robust coffee shop scene. They do much to my delight. They have plenty of those. My favorite was this place called sky coffee and it's in the railyard area of which seems to be a very kind of up and coming in like industrial area hip but like that's where like the Rei was and area. You're obsessed with because you're getting those town mountain bars from. Yeah and only I can only get them in areas. So that's what brought me to that. Area was to stock up on energy bars and then I was like Oh. Here's a coffee shop. That looks really cute. So hot in there and it did not disappoint. It's really sunny bright. It looks like kind of a white cottage definitely place that I would just chill out working main computer for a little while which is exactly what I did and they have like wonderful espresso and Cortott does Chai per over coffee. They've come on tap and then they have lots of coffee cake and muffins and they also supply a limited selection of. Who's doughnuts so in case you can't make debate. They were ownership. Yeah and last but not least has probably one of the better views was that rooftop Cantina For Margarita's yes. I was like are fun. Awesome like bar hopping night in downtown Santa Fe and this is the grid casual option. It's very chill lively vibe. Still kind of silence in artsy but like much more laid back I would say and spacious rooftop we were able to like Mosey right up to the edge. Pretty much and just have like a couple of margaritas probably like guacamole chips. Solid foods solid Margaritas. Like nothing too crazy. Fancy it's about the views but then they do have that like Fancy restaurant inside though they do. Yeah which is just right through the doors and I remember just like sitting sitting there chilling. The Sun was setting and it was the most idyllic experience and a great way to cap off just a wonderful dream evening in Santa Fe. Yeah and I cannot get enough of Santa Fe or Albuquerque or New Mexico like all of this from blue corn donuts to like blue corn lagers at bow and Arrow and Green Chili Pizza. Grizzly Turkey sandwiches. I love it all such a wonderful and you know what's crazy. This is just a taste of New Mexico. Yeah it just tastes so I can't wait to go back and re eat re drink all of us and then just explore everything else. "My favorite all right now. It's the time of the episode where we share our favorite parts of DC in its national park sites. We haven't told each other answers. So it's all surprise Matt. What was your favorite part of Washington? DC and the National Park Systems. Fantastic question I would say. My favorite part was probably the national archives because seeing seeing the bill of rights and the Declaration of Independence is probably one of the most like Americana things I've maybe ever done. And also you know directly to my favorite movie national treasure so that that plays a big part in in that decision now but it was. We're only there for a few minutes really in the Rotunda like looking at these documents but you are so immersed in it in every way. It's like a dark space. It's it's chilly so it's basically got Tony Environment and I it was. It was really really cool skimming over a little bit. Couldn't read most of it but the the impact of these documents is profound and yeah. I absolutely loved that so. I'm glad that we're able to do that. What about you? What was your favorite part of a very tough question in the bud I would? I would have to say the Lincoln Memorial There's just so much history Torri to to contemplate there. There's so many lessons in life the being on the road and just seeing these different memorials in these sites That impact as like a culture as a single culture and within the multiple cultures of the United States and trying to figure it out. And I think that's the one thing that I see. Abraham Lincoln means to me is like E. He realized that we're all individuals. We have our individual cultures but we have an American American culture as well and bringing people together was his mission. Yeah Yeah it is his legacy and so that's really what it is to me a little bit There's more to like processing over there but I just really love everything. That Abraham Lincoln was about out and figuring it figure it out. Yeah and it's also cool because that legacy and his whole ethos is really living on today as you can see the Lincoln and we'll get seven million annual visitors. That's a ton it's like one of the most visited places in DC and swarming with people. We were there and people from all walks of life from all over the world presumably. Are they're mingling together. And absorbing this experience and that was amazing and I also love how inspite of how crowded it was while you're inside the extra memorial. Everyone is quiet and respectful. That and there are signs that say like you know please be respectful and inquire while you're in here etcetera and everyone is very well behaved you know. Yeah they are yeah and also the view view from up there is just the best like up his long series of steps in overlooking the reflecting Pool The Washington Monument. It's probably the best view in the Jose I think about. Yeah sorry. I'm like kind of stealing your favorite thing. Now that's coming into my own but I'm just listening having fun you know and and this this park the or Washington. DC The district of Columbia. However you want to look at it the three things to bring really isn't your normal? I mean honestly I would bring friends and family because you don't want to be like thirteen year. Old Math like younger and friendless. Yeah don't experience it like I did in middle school Because you you might not have the best memories but I would say oh awesome place to visit with groups with family especially really and then there's a lot to do here and it's hard to kind of summarize it because it's so spread out and so many different things freebies freebies except bring money for milk. Barney yeah because you need to get your clock days and your corn cookies yes you do and then you also need to go to old et grill. More have an iconic meal. We actually ate and drank very well in DC. So I'm glad that we haven't even scratched the survey and that's fine though. Maybe maybe they'll be a special bonus episode in the future maybe branching out into neighborhoods and checking out more culture her and other kinds of activities and DC. Because this is just the very beginning and let's see the third thing so we got money friends and family yeah slash appetite of some sort of a camera and it can be yourself on. It doesn't have to be like huge beautiful camera but like there are are places to take great photos too so but just bring some kind of Camera because there's so many memories that like you're just GonNa take pictures all day anyway and what you're going to look through your remember you went to that place and then you're gonNA start researching because that's what we do like. We take pictures like. Oh yeah forgot about this and then I just go back and and start research and try to understand and see what else is in there. Because that's just what I I love to do right right for sure. Also I think this is another little thing to bring. It's like or the thing more so I think to get while you're there is public transit cards like we talked about Makes it real easy to to get around town. Walk to like while you're in and around the National Mall Very walkable but the the train makes it super easy to branch out from that as well. Yeah those public transit cards. Yeah definitely definitely worth it. Yeah I gotta say it was much nicer spending time in DC now that. I'm not a socially awkward seventh grader. I learned a ton I had so much fun and I left feeling very inspired and very well fed. This is definitely an all American city filled with inspiration and history. Plus it is inspired us to to obsess over Netflix. Shows like house of cards. An Madam Secretary. Yeah obsesses an understatement. Best enjoy it of course while eating milk bar cookies. "The only way is through a new podcast in partnership with iheartradio and underarm. Join us as we hear from the world's greatest athletes coaches and trainers. They discuss how they utilize training competition recovery and the latest innovations if fitness to improve their performance and push through their personal physical ankle challenges. Here is Canadian. Heptathlete Georgia Ellen word. You can practice every day because you're working on things like you might slow something down or exaggerate another another thing but when you're competing you're going as hard as you can for even that short amount of time it's a lot of intensity and it's a lot of physical powers lot of mental power. I I think that's why it's so draining and to shift gears after every event like Oh. I just ran the hurdles. Now I have to think about high jump. How do I get as high up in the air is I can't after I just tried to run as fast as I can't giving that much intensity and such contrasting events can can be really difficult listening to the only way is through available now on the iheartradio APP off or wherever you get your podcast? twenty-seven club is a new podcast about famous musicians died prematurely in sometimes mysteriously seriously at the age of twenty seven this new serialized. Amy Wine House the Rolling Stones Brian Jones and others who I'll be featured in future seasons of the twenty seven club season one of the twenty seven and club podcast on Jimi Hendrix like all seasons of the twenty seven club contains adult content and explicit. Language you listen to the twenty seven club on the iheartradio APP apple podcasts. Or wherever you get your podcasts watch out for your years I am Matt and I'm Brad. This is park. Land area and this week's episode is about Yellowstone National Park and and North Western Wyoming Ecology. And Right. Now we're GONNA get into a little bit more detail about the wildlife here since it's a pretty the big deal. Yeah and it's really crazy. Because in the past couple of decades yellowstone has taught scientists a lot about how food webs and ecological systems work. It's An ecosystem that runs an energy from the sun a plant turn solar energy and to food for itself but then that plant is eaten by a cricket which is then eaten by a mouse which is then eaten by a snake which is then eaten by a hawk when the Huck dies its body provides food for bacteria and fungi which then in turn feeds plans. All of these animals represent what are called tropic levels what scientists now call links in the food chain and as representatives representatives of these trophic groups each other energy has passed all around the ecosystem. But what happens when one member of this food web. It's removed from the system. Yellowstone has has actually been ground zero for sort of unintentional experiment. Regarding what scientists I've come to refer to as trophic cascades and trophic cascades occur when predators editors hunting. Their prey keeps the number of prey animals. Down passing on the savings to the next trophic level. Whatever the prey animal eats then has a better shot at survival and on and on and on down the line right and in yellowstone what they did was they actually like reintroduced the Grey Wolves Wolves back India sewn and this is a perfect example of what we're talking about so in regards to walls like every wills are scary right like humans? I have never really liked them. which is kind of weird? Because they're the direct wild ancestors of Man's best friends domesticated dogs the fact that they're fast carnivorous her nevarez and they move around intimidating packs. I think plus the livestock they can eat like twenty pounds of meat in a single sitting. This is a this is what's lead. Humans is to create this like terrifying polity around wolves with things like Little Red Riding Hood Peter and the wolf the boy who cried wolf et Cetera et cetera historically gray wolves arranged around two thirds of the Modern Day United States home. But they've been driven out of most of it now They were hunted out of Yellowstone by Nineteen Twenty Ninety six. Yeah and then. In nineteen ninety-five however the park service released. Fourteen Grey Wolves from Canada into yellowstone after seventy years of wolf less ecosystem there. This decision of course was controversial in made a lot of humans mad but the ecological results were immediate and honestly pretty startling. In fact a lot of colleges think the wolves did in yellowstone was prevent elk and deer some of their favorite foods from eating all the plans especially near rivers. Yeah the wolves kept the deer out from denuding. The river valleys which promoted the growth of trees and the riparian areas. Riparian and meaning the special groups plants that grow in flood plains of rivers and streams. So this meant more beavers which are animals that creates special mini habitats for other animals. Like otters fish amphibians and so forth and more migratory birds visited as well. The wolves killed earned him the coyotes which meant they were then more rabbits and mice around with Third Hawks and other birds of prey to the area so huge facts and not only all that but it increased stabilization of the riverbanks near Narrow River channels. which makes more different kind of habitat in yellowstone as well so would have this huge ripple effect across pretty much every everything every animal every environment and the simple truth is that the effects the wolves took on yellowstone is complex? And this idea of trophic cascade being the saving grace of the park's ecosystem is a controversial one among scientists We basically can't replicate the study because there's not another yellowstone to replicate it and so we may never know exactly what effect wolves hat on yellowstone however it definitely taught us that the human mythology around wolves being Yvonne. Dangerous Villains lends deserving. Ratification is a very subjective. One right yeah. They can have a lot of benefits. Yeah I this is something. That is very complex and hard to kind of just dive into right because like they said you can't just replicated over and over again because even if you reintroduced wolves into Michigan I'm just using random place I mean. Yeah it's the ecosystem is so different. There and the cycle of life often the hunting cycles. They're so different that it would actually create a correct study. Yeah that's true but then when you also living about how like walls these two thirds of the US like they're clearly acclimated to a majority of this country and they they have every natural right to be there in a way so it's weird that suddenly humans are in this position where they're controlling it and dictating where wolves are relocated to. And then what what happens. So it's it's strange because like they were here before people were and I mean they've been gone out to do a reintroduced but they're different species of wolves. I think they're the closest to but you can't have the exact act if they didn't stay in that ecosystem right. I mean the same thing with the bison they were reintroduced into a national park this year. Oh Yeah Yeah. Which one was in that while they moved more bison to badlands released them? They're so like this isn't an entirely new concept. This has happened before yellowstone. This will happen in the future and other places so but that will have an impact on that national. Yeah and it sounds like it's going great and yellowstone so cute us to the offs. We did not see any walls in yellowstone. Regretfully I would love to. I know that That one takes a lot of pain. Definitely something I I would love to do is like just slow down a little bit because we normally like kind of go through national parks and try to get everything in and that's why we revisit national parks as well though because the the things that we miss but yellowstone is one of those national parks that we have both been to multiple times now for multiple days at a time. I mean I think we both have combined maybe twenty thirty days in that park and we still haven't even scratched the surface. Yeah the what is it. One percent of yellowstone. Oh stone is actually seem by the tourists that go there grunting percent so there's so much in that ecosystem that wildlife that diversity that we have to re-explore and that is why we're even continuing with the part two of yellowstone national a park later this season right. It won't be the next episode. So you're going to have to stay tuned you're going to have stand your toes and get ready for more and more of that beautiful. Oh beautiful place that yellowstone is yeah but of a cliffhanger but also the exciting thing too is. We'll be able to incorporate like R. V. experienced they are because now they're vesper in an RV. I visited so it's GonNa be fun to drugs. Lodges Hotels Yeah Inside the Park outside the park. Where do you WanNa stay day since both of our first trips were pretty? RV We're going to save RV segment for part two and since we we visited together we are in RV and experienced it from totally different perspective. Exactly so for that reason and a bunch of other things excited for party because this really is one of those enormous dynamic parks that feels completely fresh and new upon each visit. And it feels like you're visiting a different place when you're in an RV as well that's for sure so that'll be fun to talk about incorporate. Yeah for now though. We hope you have been inspired to visit or revisit. This ultimate National Park. It's a place. We have loved him an individually and together it's been inspiring and it's just put. I'm in complete shock. It's such a truly special place. Yeah it really is and just remember it could blow at any moment goodnight. You've been listening to Parkland. "Yeah just the way that this park in the woods have been used by various people over the years for hunting or fishing and exploration Asia and then now with the Appalachian through hikers as well so that was a little glimpse into that I guess inadvertently but that trail was was awesome in those waterfalls falls were extraordinary. I really really liked it yeah. I'd really love to bring like enough things to like. Make your own cocktails and you know you're going to need to bring your hiking backpack to on that Appalachian Trail Right now now I'm going to bring you and Rv jiving behind me so what they're things are due to this park. What three things that I bring? I think I would bring stuff to have a picnic. I think this feels like a great picnic Hiccup Park got it offering the cocktail stuff you bring the picnic. Yeah sure yeah there we go. That's one and one yeah you'd bring another thing I would bring would be my well. I would just bring my same t-shirt. My block bear t shirt because this is the place to to wear that. I think everybody appreciates the shirt. It just really really fits and then I'd bring my hiking sticks. 'cause you like to take me on crazy hikes. Oh yeah definitely came in hand yeah. You bought them here this. This is the first part you bought taking sticks broke one of them. I know you look immediately broke. It didn't last and then I would also bring I think our ACLU board game just in theme that clue looking and then play the clue game. That's actually a great idea. I would actually bring you'll because because there came a point where we're like okay. We're getting lawn fuel because it's a long drive and I didn't feel up before leaving or entering the park and so an upon leaving I had to get it like right away. yeah that's something to think about and now let's talk about like what our dream mm-hmm vacation version of shadow would be if we're to come back here and just kind of go go crazy yeah absolutely why don't you start off with this all right I well. I think we should stay at at the end. The men's lent end of course. I very curious about that. We didn't see any of the rams. All we do is go to the speakeasy bar but I just you get get a sense of it that it's probably really luxuria vintage way so i WanNa do that. I also really want to go and just check out their main restaurant. Circa thirty one is the name of it and not only does it like super stylish swath like the rest of the property but the restaurant also hosts dinner shows and murder mystery dinners wished uh-huh perfect. We have to do this like murder. Mystery dinners like I was actually really bummed when we couldn't do that because you know from Hyogo Valley episode so how much we love our murder mystery train rides and dinners and that would have been perfect. I know for anyone who remembers our first episode. Where we geeked picked out on the murder mystery train ride they know full well about our obsession with murder mysteries and how crazy and wonderful to discover the hotel which looks like the clue mansion also hosts murder mystery so that's just perfect? It's literally perfect and then of course you would also have to do more hikes exploration of Shannon Doa. Maybe so you can even hike the whole Shannon Doa part of that place trail I would totally do that. Yeah I think that'd be a nice way to dip my toe into the Appalachian. Just do a easy hundred mile hike but you're don't tempt me though because he no actually do it and then you're going to have to drive and pick me up and pamper me in the evening. They'll be tired brings right. You've been listening to park land. A show about National Parks Park Oakland is a production of iheartradio's.
