Governor Jay Inslee is in Paris this week for Department of Commerce Trade Mission an engine that coincides with the annual Paris Air Show. Today, his delegation announced a start -up company's plans to manufacture sustainable aviation fuel at a commercial scale production facility in Moses Lake. Inslee spoke with Northwest News Radio's Corwin Haake. This company is called 12 and they're named after the mass of a carbon atom and they are going to make extremely clean jet fuel. They call it E jet and they basically have a way of combining carbon dioxide and water through two separate processes that can make a very clean jet fuel so we don't have carbon dioxide coming out of our jet engines contributing to climate change and it is extremely exciting technology because it can turn clean electricity, you know clean we have electricity coming from our hydroelectric system and turn that into liquid jet fuel that can drop right into a pipeline and power our jets and I'm at the Paris air show right now where this is a super high priority for the whole aviation industry to find a way that we can power our planes in a way that doesn't contribute to climate change gases so they're gonna break ground on July 11th in Moses Lake for a first manufacturing plant. They have tremendous opportunity to scale the plant up to larger production and this is really another step forward for the aviation industry in Washington State. We've led you know for decades that we are continuing to lead in multiple ways in sustainable aviation so we can enjoy aviation in a way that doesn't cook the planet. really So good news today. That's absolutely extraordinary and it's my understanding that this fuel is compatible with existing airplane engines. I know you're not an aviation engineer but can you address that aspect of it? That's one of the things that's so exciting. So I have in my pocket a little bottle of this ejet fuel and you can drop that right into an existing jet engine today and fly it across the Atlantic. And so it's perfectly it's ready to go. It's certified as a fuel source and it meets all the for requirements jet fuel. And essentially what you're doing is you're using hydroelectric energy from our dams to power jet airplanes across the world. That's an exciting prospect. guess And I one of the things that is intriguing here is that this is just one of multiple sustainable energy companies we now have developing in our state. We also had an earlier announcement about Xero Avio which is working on a plane that can can fly on hydrogen again with extremely low emissions to fight climate change. We have a company called Aerotech doing the same thing. We have a company called Eviation that's making the first battery powered nine seater commercial airplane. So we are really a hub of I think it's fair to in say the entire world we have a greater concentration of new technologies including Boeing which is dedicated to having sustainable aviation to have to have sustainable aviation fuels so that they can reduce their carbon footprint and that was the executives from Boeing today about that too.
