"That is about it, folks. Oh, they're a favorite at home right now against the Steelers, so that's three wins. There are favorite at home against the Lions, so we'll give them four wins, although at that point, maybe people are going to be at the lines. That's it. So just based on the spreads for wins. But let me tell you something. Some of those games were there in underdog. I like them to win. And some of those games were there a favorite, I like them to lose. You know, a lot of these spreads they have one, two, three, let's see. Four, four, still on four, 5, 6, 7, 7, 8, 9, 9, ten, they have ten games that are currently lined at under a field goal. Whether they're the dog or the favorite, ten games on their schedule are currently spreads of under a field goal. Let that sink in. This is a team that a couple of bounces of the football here or there. They could be very, very bad and go under the 6 wins easily. Or they could be good. And maybe win 90 games. Football is a funny, funny game. I'm Scott Sadler. Hit me up on Twitter at Scott's on air SCO TTS Owen AIR coming up next. We're going to get back into Major League Baseball. "The Reds could go on a 10 game 11 game 12 game winning streak. Don't think they have what it takes to do that. Don't think they have the pitching to do that. Maybe Well, I I don't think it's going to happen. So the question becomes realistic that realistically, where is this team and winning? The National League Central Division. I would submit to you just go anywhere that you choose to find your Your baseball information and just look at the pitching staff that Milwaukee has and see what they've been able to do. And then if, indeed it's going to take 95. Let's just say right now. That's the magic number because again, the Brewers are on track for that, If it's going to take 95 wins to win this division And there are 81 games left, it would mean the Reds have to win 54. Of those 81 games left. To get to 95 54. Could they do it? Sure. Chances of them doing it Good. I don't know. I don't think so. I think this team right now is in a great spot as a leap board in the next year. I think that they've got certain things they've got to address. I think they have to make sure that they don't lose Nick Castellanos. Think they have to address the glaring weakness that is their bullpen, although over the last seven games they played pretty well, picks pretty well out of the pen pitch well last night. And I think they have to figure out once and for all, what's going on at shortstop. Hopefully, they'll get some answers. But to run out and just start dealing and say I need it. We need a picture. We need somebody else in the pulpit. For what to get where I think if you do the math I don't I don't sense it. Joey Votto had something interesting to say after the game last night about the situation Obviously, he's playing better now than what he did. At any point last year or the year before. I think he's he's kind of been rejuvenated, had to hit last night that brought in both runs. Reds Win 2 to 1. This is what he's talking about, and you can almost hear in his voice that It's a herculean task that they have. Anyway. Here's what photo had to say. Yeah. Last night was kind of a tone setter for tonight, Always a reminder that we're in games. And to, uh, run through the tape by Chris Webber says in life, but, um, yeah, no, I, um I like today's when I like last night's win and 41 40 through the first half of the season, so we have to play some really strong baseball the rest of the way. And, uh, that's not. That's not something. Um We think we can do that, so we're looking forward to it. Got to play some real strong baseball the rest of the way. If indeed, Milwaukee keeps this up and again 10 game winning streak is crazy. But if they keep it up, and they do wind up in the mid nineties 95 let's just go right there. Cincinnati is going to win 54. The 81 games. It has left 54. They would have to go Help me again. Ohio U 54 27. To win a division. That I don't see a wild card coming out of But anyway We'll try it again with the Cubs they win. Today. It's three in a row. You can only play one game at a time. Reds have won nine of their last 11 games against National League Central Division opponents. Here's the pitch photo takes inside overall this year. The Reds have really played Division rivals quite well. Reds are nine and 12 overall. Division ballgames. Here's the 21 pitch photo takes a breaking ball down low and this is a really important stretch of the schedule for the Reds right now. You have 10 of the next 13 games starting tonight against both the Cubs and then the Brewers will be playing the Brewers on each side of the All Star break. 31 pitch inside hit him. Votto will go down to first on the hit by pitch and he's aboard to lead off the second inning. If you're listening tonight on your car or truck radio, please remember to buckle your safety belt. This message brought to you by the Ohio Department of Public Safety if you're not buckled up What's holding you back, But this is the point in time where Alec Mills has a little more difficulty. When he's in the wind up. He's got great movement on both the fastball and changeup. When he's in the stretch. The ball doesn't quite have that depth that we're seeing when he's in the wind up, and that's by that I mean running away from the left handed hitters. And the first pitch to make Quinn is a ball want to know? Basically, the ball tends to straighten out a bill when he's in the stretch. Of course, you've got to get him in the stretch that to happen. See if the Reds can find a way to get to him working out of the stretch with Votto on to start the inning. Here's the one Oh, Donna Quinn. Up and away two balls and no strikes. So a guy like Greg Maddux Mm hmm. Sometimes it could be a qualifier here. 22 down and in three balls and two strikes. Maddox reached it while he was pitching with the Braves, and I didn't know cups first. Great. Exactly. And then he finished with the Cubs. He hit a milestone, didn't he with the Cubs? Over which that was she had pretty good. He had quite a few accomplishments in his day with the same song. Uh um 32 pitch when swing sky is one of the air, shallow right center. "Reds Make a roster move. Tony Santiago goes down Re labor Ashton Goudeau comes up. Let me give you the Cliff Notes version of this. Reds used seven relievers last night and they pitched well, Everybody not named Ryan Hendrix pitch Well. Last night, six innings of two run baseball. Hendrix gave up both runs. But you can understand the Reds need a fresh bullpen arm tonight. Santillan's is is a dead roster spot for lack of a better phrasing because he's not going to pitch the next couple of days. So by sending Santa and down they bring up Ashton Goudeau reliever, So they've got his relieved related to use if they need tonight and tomorrow, Then by Friday, Sonny Gray is scheduled to come off the injured list. So at that point, Grey is activated. Good. Oh goes back to triple light. They have effectively exchange Santy on For gray on Friday and got a reliever to use two days in between. If that makes sense without doing that you have Santiago up here who's not going to pitch for the next couple of days. So that's why I call it a dead roster spot. You need a relief arm. So this gets you one for two days and then you make the even exchange and gray is up now. There's a bigger picture here of what this means for Santy in in the bigger picture. I don't think anybody is giving up on him. After what four major leg starts, He's got to get better. He's had some moments. And then he's had some moments where you see there's work to be done. He he needed 75 pitches last night to work through three excruciating innings, and I know the earned run average. Look, I didn't say Well, how can you send out a guy who's got an earned run? Average? Like 386? Well, he hasn't There's a little bit of luck involved there. He hasn't pitched that. Well. He's give up. A lot of traffic, meaning hits, walks, Hit batters, You name it. He's walked 10 guys in 16 innings, so there's work to be done. Um, And he'll do that, at least for the moment in Triple A and then be back here, perhaps as a reliever, or as a starter to be determined. We will see but we know for the next two nights, they've got a fresh arm to add to that pen in Ashton. Good. Oh, time for big sticks in the big leagues. Brought to you by Encore Technologies visit. Encore dot tech. Kyle Schwarber is human. He is not homered today in the Nationals game. He did Homer last night. He has seven leadoff home runs in his last eight games. 12 in his last 10 games, 16 homers in his last 18 games. That's just ridiculous, saying it out loud. Shohei Otani hit two home runs last night. He has 28 He's on pace for 57 homers. With a 2 58 earned run average, and he is home at 11 times in his last 13 games. You can't be serious, just a reminder. If you're headed to the game. Please choose a designated driver drive sober or get pulled over a message from the Ohio Department of Public Safety. Still ahead, we'll take a look at the scoreboard. There's uh Couple of games in the books, including You will not believe what transpired today in Milwaukee between the Brewers and the Cubs will check out the docket for tonight and an update on Hunter Green. And Jose Barreiro down at Triple A last night. So that's uh, that's plenty to get to before first pitch tonight, You're going to hear David Bell in a second as well, Um, the National League Central Division standings up to the moment. The Brewers are now 15 games over 500. After winning today, we'll get the details on that. But that leaves the Cubs Six back the Reds 7.5 back the Cardinals 8.5 back! No kernels one today in the Pirates 17.5 games back. Cardinals one today 7 to 4 in ST Louis. I go and give you the Brewers score. They trailed. Seven to nothing in the first. They started rookie making his major league debut who got two outs did not get out of the inning. It was seven to nothing Cubs before the Brewers came to bat. Final today. Anyway, he said the McCoys that would be Rick Derringer in group the McCoys played at the reading High school gymnasium. In 1968. So there you go. A little bit of hard rock music trivia right here just as a value edit. As we continue to fill in for Scott's loan. Well, the Reds bullpen did not let them down yesterday, which is as much of a shock. I think it is anything in sports. They lose yesterday to the Padres, 3 to 2, largely because of defense defense has been a problem for the Reds this season, as well as the bullpen. But here they are, And here we are now as we cruise into yet another week. We are 70 games into the season And yet the Reds are only four games out of first place, thanks to the mediocrity of the National League Central Division. But it's clear that they've got major problems. It's clear they've got injury problems. It's clear they got problems. And whatever they have problems we bring in a guy with problems. You can hear me on ESPN 15 37 100 WLW one of the foremost authorities on sports in the history of broadcasting in Cincinnati, he is our good friend Mo Egger, Mo. How are you on this glorious Monday? What would you say is my biggest problem because I obviously have them. Your biggest problem is you say yes to me When I ask you to be on my show. That is your biggest problem, then life is pretty good. Welcome on it. I hope you had a good father's day yesterday or someone said to be a non birthing person's day. I just I want to make sure that you had a good time yesterday. I had a great time. Likewise to you. Now, listen. Uh they're 35 35. We know they've got a bullpen. That is not good. We know they've got injury problems. I don't know what happened to Moustakas. But he's got you know that continues to be a saga when he comes back. I'm not sure what happens to that infield, But they're 35 35. They're only four games out. The optimist in me says You know what? Anything is possible at this early juncture the season walk me back on that. I can't walk you back on that specifically, but you acknowledge what some of these teams issues are you talked about the defense defense came back to bite him Yesterday We talked about the bullpen. The bullpen has been an issue all year long and blew the game on Thursday. It's coughed away the game on On Saturday. I do think, though, that this team does have some upside. We started to see Luis Castillo throw better. He was not great yesterday, but he's been better than he was to start the season. Um you still feel like it wouldn't be all that surprising of Joey Votto had a productive last 3.5 months offensively. Same thing for are you? Hey, neo Suarez. It wouldn't surprise you if they went out and got a piece in the bullpen that can make them better. Michael Lorenzen, coming back should help. It wouldn't surprise you. If Amir Garrett went through a stretch where he started to regularly get hitters out. Each of those things can happen. The problem is for this team to leapfrog the teams they have to leapfrog in the National League Central Probably all of those things have to happen. And I'm not necessarily sure that I would bet on that being the case. No, they're going to have to beat those teams in head to head matchups, and they can't. Uh, they can't fall into an A three game series. Um, win one, lose two or win two and lose one. I mean, they're going to have to dominate in the series. They play against the Brewers and the Cubs, and I'm not one who is writing off the cardinals by any way any way, shape or form. But again, I look at the landscape in that division. It's not great. I mean, it just is, and I watched a lot of baseball like you to every single team in that division has read numbers when it comes to run differential, except Chicago. And I think Chicago is living on a prayer right now. So I look at that, and I'm thinking, okay. You know, I think some experts had them had 87 88 wins to win that division. It could be on the low side of that. So I I agree. They've got to do things. They gotta get people healthy. They've got to. They've got to get additional help for their bullpen. But I don't think in any way shape or form the right of this thing. So I don't think they're out of this thing. Um, that is an indictment against the quality of the division. I tend to go back to something that I said before the season. I believe this. This division is going to be decided by whichever team plays best against the Pittsburgh Pirates because everybody but the Pirates are awful and everybody is going to play. I'm 18 or 19 times. The Reds are played all right against Pittsburgh, but you know, it's It's great when you go into six game winning streak, But you know the problem with this team is they have a role of prosperity, and then they give it all back. They're going Up to a six and one start. We spent all the time during spring training talking about boy. They have to avoid the bad start, which they did, and then still, by the end of April, they had a losing record. It's great that they won six straight games. It's awesome that they went to Milwaukee and swept the Brewers and and granted. San Diego is a very good team. The crowds for for those four games, it literally did feel like a playoff. Atmosphere, but you can't then follow up winning six by losing four straight and and to me, It's just this team cancer camp. Duke can't sustain quality play over the course of a long stretch of time, and I think There's two things one. I believe the first team that really does. That doesn't just have a good week, which the rights have had to have a good two or three weeks and separates themselves a little bit from the pack. I think that team is going to have a clear advantage. And which team in this division makes the key move either before the trade deadline, which I would hope the Reds are interested in doing or at least at the deadline, Um That to me, you know? Are the Chicago Cubs going to continue to cry poverty, which is what they've done for the past two off seasons are the ST Louis Cardinals going to go and make the kind of move that we just automatically assume the ST Louis Cardinals are going to make the Milwaukee Brewers, I think, still have the best team talk to bottom. In this division. They have the best three starting pictures..

"Brew Well, today, the Reds go for the sweep. They go for the sweep over the Colorado Rockies, and it's kind of an intriguing day too, because the Reds will now start another picture. Making his major league debut. Yes, it'll be Tony Santy it on the mound today for the Cincinnati Reds as they try to build off what they've done the last couple of nights and what they've done. The last couple of nights has been nothing short of amazing. 21 runs 24 hits in the last two games. They beat the Rockies yesterday. 10 to 3. Nick Castellanos went two for five. Joey Votto two for five. Hey, you hate your Suarez, two for five and no home runs all the runs generated without the benefit of a home run. Nixon. Wait. Miley's seven innings, six hits, three earned runs, three strikeouts in one walk to go six and four, and they've got the Reds who are now winners. Seven of their last 10 games. Brewers of the Cubs, both one on Saturdays to the Reds are tied Would ST Louis five games back each team at 31 31. So it's kind of amazing. There are 100 games to go in this season. 62 games in the book, and the Reds have accomplished what they've accomplished with Joey Votto hitting only 2 28 missing 28 games. Mike Mushtaq is still not in the line up to 41 average. He's missed 34 games. Nick Sans Elle has missed 16 games. Still recovering from surgery shows a lot. Akiyama missed the first month of the season, and now he's just being filtered back into the lineup. You figure in a U Julio Suarez hitting just 1 70. Luis Castillo, just two and nine with the 6.47 earned run average and allowing a team high nine home runs and Sonny Gray now back on the injured list. It's kind of amazing that the Reds have made it to the 500 level. Bullpen dead last in Major League baseball, and he already the second, uh, the worst in Major League baseball and the second most walks allowed. And the entire staff next to last in E R. A. And still Here are the Reds. Hanging around five games, just five games out of first place. In the National League Central Division. As we begin this this game this afternoon against the Rockies, you know there are a lot of players that are intriguing this far in the major lake season, there may not be any more intriguing than the Los Angeles Angels Shohei Otani. Has 40 45 R B I At this point in the season, he's hitting 2 70. Oh, and by the way, He leads his home run. His team at home runs with 17 at Otani is a pitcher. He's also a heck of a two way player. He's played in 59 games, but he's not hitting. He's the D. H and Otani at this point is V, a team so well, he's hitting to 70 to 70 right now. So here Tony is the class of two way player that Major league Baseball hasn't seen the likes up. Maybe since the days of Babe Ruth. Somebody that knows about this story very well was my guest on one of my shows. Recently, he's Scott Miller noted. Baseball writer lives in the Bay Area of California. And wrote a story in The New York Times about two weeks ago, the unleashing of Shohei Otani Tommy John surgery recovered from that two way player, one of the best in the history of baseball. What makes him so good? You want to interview seller? Uh, you know, as you said, I mean, he's Yeah, he is. He's uh, you know, as you said, I mean, he's you know, for for those that enjoy some of the moderns that you know, exit velocity. He's hit some of the hardest balls this year. Pitching wise, You know, he's clocked in the upper tier fastballs in the game. Um, it only runs. I mean, yeah, all around your point. Amazing athletes. I mean, this guy's got, you know a handful of steals this year. In fact, one thing I love and at this point The fact that this guy is a gamer and an athlete that's well rounded. A couple weeks ago in Seattle when the Angels were in Seattle. Otani said. The plate and the picture drills him with pitch and you know as a like 95 mile an hour fastball hurt a little bit and I'll carry you know wasn't happy. So what did he do? He takes first. Well, he takes off and steal second, and then he steals third. Best thing you do when he was on Thursday. So you know, he's one of the Angels. He's their best starting pitcher, and he's along with Mike Trout. You know, one of the couple best hitters on the team and really, really Fascinating. And, you know, I think one of the most important players in the game right now simply because No, He's doing something that you know Nobody's done regularly since Babe Ruth back in the day, you know, and we had. There were a couple players in the in the Nero leagues that did it, including 11 of my all time favorite nickname, said Radcliffe. You know, used to catch Satchel Paige and he pitched and he earned the nickname double duty because he did both. And, uh, you know, we'll tally is double duty and awesome. Well, yeah, as you point out, Babe Ruth did that Did this all those years ago Now? You weren't around to cover Babe Ruth and as old as I am, I was not around to cover day group. We've seen flashes of this. In modern day baseball. The name that comes immediately to mind was Rick and Keel, who came up as a as a pitcher and then reinvented himself as an outfielder. The Reds drafted a guy a couple of years ago he's been hurt. What had the ability to play both in the field and throw and throw with great velocity and hunter green, But nobody really has brought this kind of a of a package together. Since Ruth there've been others along the way, as you point out, Sam McDowell being one of them, but nobody like he. Nobody like Otani. I think the Angels Have played 50 51 games. He's been in virtually every one of them. I think he's only missed a couple of games. He's an amazing amazing athlete, but has the ability to go out there and dominate both as a hitter in a picture? The pitching thing really is fun to watch because he's wild. I mean, he is he can he can get out there, but I think his strikeout to nine inning ratio is just it's nuts. It's the last I checked with this check. The stats on this guy is strikeout to nine inning ratio. Was was off the charts. Great. What is it? What is it about his ability to to pitch have some control problems, But then just blow some guys away. I'm glad he matches. You know, there were a couple guys that tried to do this that got hurt. And, of course, Otani had Tommy John surgery a couple years ago. So he's he's. The interesting thing about him this year is that he's finally healthy again. Number one. And number two. The unleashed part of it is When he first came over, the Angels tried to replicate how he mostly was handled in Japan. So what happened is early before the Tommy John surgery. They would you know, say he's pitching on Saturday they would not put him in the lineup on Friday they would give him a day off Friday to prepare for his start. Then on Saturday, he pitched, but he They have a designated hitter. They just ain't focused on pitching. And as Sunday, usually one in the lineup because he'd take a day to recover. The unleashed part of it this year. They've decided now that he's healthy. You know, Tony was coming off. He had a rough year last year as he was trying to get healthy and They? They've taken all these rules off. So now it's almost like Otani is going back to being a kid again playing a kid's game and he's having a ball..

"Use it as a platform jumping off point? Yep. Totally get that. So they've beaten the Rockies the last couple of games now. Colorado is 15 games under 500. They're 15.5 games out of first place. They're not going anywhere this year. And so these are teams that if you fancy yourself As someone who could play in the postseason. These are teams you have to take advantage of, and the Reds have taken advantage of this team dramatically over the last two games again. 21 runs 24 hits. The other thing that you have to be encouraged about. Look, I'm not looking at this through rose colored glasses. I understand completely that in the National League Central Division, the Brewers look like the team and the Cubs, miraculously. Oh, right there with him. They're both 10 games over 500. The Cardinals are okay. They seem to be playing better of late. But I mean, you look at Chicago. The run differential is plus 41. Milwaukee. Milwaukee is getting it done, uh, largely with balance, run production and runs prevented, plus seven and, uh, in the differential, so they're literally the two teams that are that are out there and play the best baseball in the division. But the thing that the thing that I found encouraging the last couple of games Was that the Reds one on Friday night with home runs they won yesterday without any home runs. And Barnhart again after the game was talking about. That's one of the reasons why This team is starting to piece things together a little bit. There's seven and three over there last 10 More on Barnhart and from him after the game yesterday, and why this team is is piecing together wins right now the sweep in ST Louis and then what they've done so far here in this series with Colorado. We're not relying on Homer's homers are great. I mean, we relied on it last night, obviously, and then in ST Louis Jessi's three homer game for sure, but I think we're just finding ways to win. Without necessarily having to use the homer as a crutch, especially today. We're getting great starting pitching, um, which is huge, which takes the brunt of the off of the load off of our bullpen. Which allows guys to kind of rest to get their feet under them and and be put in positions to be productive instead of having to fill innings. I think there's a big I think there's a big difference in that. So I think it It always starts with guys on the on the mound. It really does, in my opinion, and it starts with the starters and we've had great starting pitching here of late, which is allowed us offensively to feel like we're always going to be in the game and and put good the best together, move the line and score rounds. Yeah. Good starting pitching. Now, if you had asked someone Before this season began. If you who do you think the the rock solid guy in that starting rotation is going to be You probably would have started with Castillo has not been so far. You probably then if you were not in Castillo camp for that, you would have said, Well, Sonny Gray Well has been that way so far. Tyler Malley. Has been terrific, and Wade Miley has been found money. There's two things I like about. Miley doesn't waste pitches and he doesn't take a lot of time to throw. I mean, oftentimes. Players on the opposing team will step out of the box. You know those step out because Miley is working too fast, Barnhart said after the game. Uh, that one of the reasons why he knows he's got a batter. Exactly where he wants them is when that batter is stepping out of the box. To slow down. Miley Miley was terrific yesterday. 103 pitches, seven innings, six hits, three runs, just two earned three strikeouts. Milwaukee is now six and four. And again after the game. Somebody asked Miley about why he is having this kind of success. He has the no hitter. He's got five other winds on top of that. Here's Miley after the game, I guess consistency of like my routine and, um Tucker has been great. He's been absolutely a pleasure to work with defense has been great. And like Told.

Tyler Malley 15 games Sonny Gray 15.5 games 103 pitches Cubs Homer six Miley Cardinals four 10 games Friday night six hits Wade Miley 24 hits yesterday Reds three three runs

"The Reds go for two in a row over the Colorado Rockies. What a night. It was last night. A great American ballpark. The Reds win 11 to 5. They bang out 10 hits. From four separate Colorado pitchers and cruise to a win Now Milwaukee and Chicago both one last night, so the Reds for the moment remain five games out in the National League Central Division. Number of storylines last night in this game, the biggest of which, I think is a developing story. It involves Tyler Malley six innings last night, five hits, four runs. There was that three run home run in the sixth. That kind of damaged his e R a for the night, but he struck out six and walked only one. This now is five strong starts in Malley's last six outings. The Reds are nine and three. And Malley starts this season. He's now 6 to 3.32 earned run average, and Malley was talking about the string after the game last night, and he should because it's one of the best. Right now in Major league baseball. Here's Tyler. I don't think in my professional career in the in the big leagues, I don't know about Pitched like this over this amount of time. Um, uh, You know, it's all I I feel like I always find myself, you know, having a good start. Bad start. Good start bad start. So it feels pretty good to be a little little more consistent. Um, uh um. But, yeah, I mean, we still got a long way to go so Tyler Malley after the win last night. The other storyline last night, five home runs from five different Cincinnati Reds in the first five innings of this game. Castellano, said his 13th Scott Heinemann, his second Kyle farmer, his fifth Stevenson, his fourth and Joey Votto hit his seventh of the season last night. And after the game, David Bell was talking about that storyline and how encouraging it is to see this power returning from his everyday eight. Here's Bell after the game. I mean, it's It's so important and just keep going. Keep having good at bats, and, uh, you know when I can lead to a home run We'll definitely take it. But you know, it's good night for our offense and then You know, Tyler was was outstanding again and and that really set the tone on the other side, You know, it's interesting watching Votto at the end of his home run his celebration was, I guess it would be called a typical Votto really doesn't display a lot of emotion both on or off the field, but very animated after his home run a three run shot at four R B I on the night here's Joey on that earlier in the season. Jonathan India hit a home run. I think it was his first major league home run, and while we were playing 1st and 2nd A few days ago. I told him, you know. I admired his show of passion early in the year and I felt like it was something I wanted to add to my game. And something I I I feel like I feel like I'm missing and More than anything. His reaction was like natural. It was, um He wasn't forcing it, and there are moments now. It's not quite as easy as it used to be when I was a younger player. And so like. Doing well, feels that much more, um, special Um And so that was one of those moments. You know, I'm Haven't had a lot of success against left handed pitching so far this year. And I want to play every day and we're trying to win. I have to produce against whoever is on the mountain. And I did in that occasion. It made me feel really good. Yeah, It was a big night for a lot of people last night, But time is ticking, right? I mean, here we are in the middle of Joan and the Reds are five games out of first place. They're not really out of it, but they're not really in it. It's important now for this team, any team really, but for this team to start ripping off some wins. And that wasn't lost on Votto after last night's 11 to 5 went over the Rockies. It's going to be a tough, um, division all year long. As it should be. But we have to go now. And you know, we're already a number of games back. And and it may not be an easy wild cartage chain to attain also this year, So we have to keep our eye on just playing. Of course we want to stay are constantly want to concentrate our on our own team and our own games. But You know you have to. You have to meet your competition, uh, where they are, and we have to catch up so urgency is real. We have to. We have to hurry up. And that's that's an odd thing to say, with 100 games remaining, but Um Urgency without panic, urgency without panic, not the easiest thing to pull off in anything in life. I think if you look at Major league baseball standings right now, and here we are well over 50. Oh, well over 60 games played for a lot of teams so far this year. I think the surprise teams are the Tampa Bay Rays in the Chicago Cubs. Now the Rays were not really expected to contend this year, but here they are. At 40 and 24. They're a game up on Boston in the American League East. The Cubs are even more perplexing. They seem to start to dismantle of their roster over the course of the last winter, and nobody really expected Chicago to be where they are right now. But here they are. After winning last night, still tied for first 36 27 in the National League Central Division, and they have a lot of decisions to make after this 2021 season on players currently on that roster, So what's going on with the Cubs? And why are they playing so well? Riot? Fagan covers baseball for sporting news. Kami was on my show last week here on 700 wlw. And I asked him about that, because he just has an article that's published on sporting news dot com about the Cubs how surprising they are and how it seems like what they're doing flies in the face. Of the logic they had back in January and February. Here's part of what Fagan had to say. Well, I think in the cops looked at their situation and you know, we won the World Series a couple years ago. We have this core of players and All of these guys are heading towards free agency very soon, and they're coming off quite frankly, bad 2020 season. I know it was a short 50 game schedule, and the Cubs did win an offensive. But you look because Brian headed down here, I'll be bias headed down here. The Anthony Rizzo wasn't as good as he has been consistently has them They looked at 2021 said. Okay, well, You know what? Let's not put a lot of resources towards this year. You know, they paid Jon Lester $10 million for his buyout to go away instead of spending 25 million to play him. They set They non tendered. Kyle Schwarber, even though he was under contract. They traded Yu Darvish..

"The reds have not released a lineup. They have not made it official. But joey votto was telling the reporters who are now allowed on the field that had the the expects to play tonight that he's hoping to play tonight and he's there he's not gonna get on a bus and go with. The bats aren't even louisville. So i assume he means he's going to play baseball tonight. A great american ballpark and rejoined the reds. Who have won. Four straight are playing. A brewers team that is red hot will spend a few minutes on on that when we come back on. Espn fifteen thirty. Cincinnati sport station. This is espn fifteen thirty. Allegra paul dana junior here for another segment gotten into the the bengals. We've almost fifty minutes when there's nothing going on with that team so that's pretty damn good. Yeah our talented yeah. Meanwhile you know the reds have won four straight games and and a week this time it was a cell. Everybody off rebuild 2.0. Let's move on the team. Stinks fire david bell and now it's just the cardinals and now this team is going to charge to the national league central division champ off your farm system to get more peace. Let's go go get some pieces. Time to get bob castellini to to spend some money and you know what i'm here for it because a week ago it it really felt like god. They're not gonna get us to training camp and now there seems to be a genuine sense that well this could be a fun and interesting summer. Gb you know what did sunday not sum up this team like you know what they have had some serious resolve and bad bullpen. And it was just like fun to watch. I mean the emotional roller coaster of that game and just the ending. You just don't think it just feels like everything about it. Says it's going to go the other way and from the winker home run to the way that sims pulled himself out of the ninth inning was just fun and surprising and i go back to this a lot because so often with baseball teams. You see them not do this is i always go back to the two thousand ten season when they just were finding ways in early first half of that season to win games they shouldn't have and rally the type of character traits that you see out of teams that play in the playoffs all the time. Like dodgers always some comeback. And there's always there never out of it really type thing a lot of baseball teams and a lot of those that have played around here by the way have not had that they just they fold. They've follow every game. It looks like they should lose. They do there's never that surprising and they still found a way to pull that out despite some things going wrong and it creates that's what creates seasons that go expectations and man. That's what sunday was in. this team. has that element. They just don't have enough to get them to be easily. And and part of that is is health or whatever but like i love that about this team. They makes them very fun. it makes them likeable. It makes them exciting and you can watch winker and castanos hit and be excited by that to sit back and enjoy the show. I watched sunday. And i thought man. That's pretty much this year in a nutshell right now. That's there's a lot of hope there but there's you know there's a it makes for a a coaster every night..

It traditionally swings at a lot of breaking balls that Off the outside part of the play a lot of times he will make contact with those breaking balls and slam him right down into home plate or in front of home plate, And that gets his momentum going to first base, my swings and misses and a slider in the dirt here, and he's down on strikes. And Sonny Gray has his first strikeout of the evening. Gone, and that brings up Reese Hoskins. That's fans. Be sure to swing by Kroger. For all the fresh favorites you love. "Sports talk great to have you with us on this overcast and cloudy day here in the tri state with rain and possibly snow moving in so Look at it this way. We have that to look forward to, and if it's going to do it, why not do it other than a communique? And wouldn't it be nice? It. Wouldn't it be great if this were the middle of July, and it was baseball season and We could all go to the games. What we don't know about that. Yet. Baseball doesn't know about that. Yet. There has been a reticence for a lot of teams to sign Big League contract's reticent to sign free agents. The budgeting for a lot of teams is very much in limbo. San Diego is out signing players like you know, they've got money to burn, and in some cases they do. San Diego is loading up, but most other teams have been judicious in whom they sign. Including the Cincinnati Reds. Now let's face it if you look at the Reds right now, even in a week, National League Central Division you're probably asking yourself, okay. What's the pathway to get to a division title? Trevor Bauer is gone. Trevor Bauer is gone. He was your race. He hasn't signed anywhere yet, although the Los Angeles Angels seem to be the latest destination for him. We'll see. But here we are, hopefully three weeks away from the start of spring training pitchers and catchers reporting In just three weeks. Rotation right now looks to be Luis Castillo. Remember that rumor that pop last Sunday? Castillo is going to the Yankees. It's a done deal on this, and that never happened. Did they talk? Sure did they think they were going to get more than what they were being offered by the Yankees? Probably. Is that the reason why he's not there? Absolutely. You have Luis Castillo and you have Sonny Gray. And then after that What you got. Paranormal. He's been around for a while, but he can pitch he could throw. You knows how to navigate through a major league game and navigating through a major league game anymore. For starters, about five innings Wade. Miley. Yeah, he's older, but still knows how to pitch. He may not throw, but he can pitch. And you've gotten Ensign, who was bounced back and forth, at least on the Depth charts between the bullpen between starting between being 1/5 starter between being a closer Lorenzen probably would be best left in the bullpen, but that still leaves you at least one and maybe two other spots to fill. So the Reds have been busy in the last week, signing pictures, not starting pitchers at best depth for their bullpen at best players that come here on the come Hoping that people like Kyle Body and Derrick Johnson, who are you have a long track record of working with pictures that haven't worked other places and spending them into something that can be useful. Siano Perez left hander the Astros had him and traded him. Hector Perez, a right hand of the Blue Jays had him and traded him like Seattle Perez here to the Reds this week. The pot's at best. They're both just bullpen guys. If indeed they even make The roster coming out of spring training. I think a lot of what's going on really now. And this is going to sound nuts. Because if you've watched the red well, it wouldn't be the first time I said something like that. If you've watched the Reds over the course off the 60 games last year. The name that I keep coming back to For this this this pitching rotation as a possible fourth starter who knows, maybe even a third starter. Is TJ Antone. PJ Antone. Out his fastball in his curve ball. I'm not going to get deep into sabermetrics or new metrics that baseball has next gen stats and all that. There's a big premium right now on spin rate. Everyone who wants to know what's the guy's spin rate on a curve ball on a fastball? And for most of his time leading up to last year's shortened season. TJ Antone's spin rate was at best pedestrian. It went off the charts last year and his appearances. I get a feeling that it's nothing more than that. It's nothing more than looking at the at the stats with sabermetrics and what he did last year. That he could be. Somebody that just comes out of the blue to the average fan, Not the Red's not the body, not to Derrick Johnson out of the blue. Have a pretty big you. Pretty big year pitchers and catchers of his report in three weeks. The big question with the Cincinnati Reds and we're going to get into this as we progress on through the next three hours. Plays shortstop. Pretty. Galvis is still out there, but they've cut and run from Freddy Galvis. There's still the three big names and free agency Marcus Semi and DeeDee Rig aureus L dropping Simmons. Jose Garcia remains in the system. But Garcia in 68 plate appearances in last year's shortened season. He's whipped 26 times with 26 times. Walked only once that is most experienced before spot play last year and again a 60 game season was no higher that advanced able So what about Simeon Gregorius and and Simmons? Because I think from those three you gotta find your shortstop there. And my guess is that's exactly What Nick crawl on his staff or up to right now they're not rushing out to sign any of those three. They may want the market to set itself After one signs. They may all sign. I mean, other than Simeon. Who has just under a nine war wins above replacement terrific player who had a offer your last year. Little bit simian. They're all Gregorius and Simmons are about the same Simeon. 2 23 is on base percentage last year was 305. I'm not going to get into the rest of the stuff that that I like. But it may make if you're not into baseball, math, you may make your eyeballs roll in the back of your head. But in 2019, this guy had to 85 drove in 92. What's his problem that why is he out there while he's 30? You also made $13 million last year playing for the Oakland A's. I doubt seriously unless this process goes deep and by deep I mean well into spring training, I doubt seriously if Marcus Semien and is going to be looking for anything less than that..
